“We made our mistakes back in the 20th century, Lord knows, but we never nominated a man for president who brags about not reading. Calvin Coolidge had his limits. Warren G. Harding spent more time on his hair than strictly necessary. Lyndon Baines Johnson was a piece of work. But all of them read books. When I envision a Trump Presidential Library, I see enormous chandeliers and gold carpet and a thousand slot machines. God help us. I mean it. We’re in trouble down here.”

Welcome to Eclipseville, and Your Midyear Readings

It’s time — eclipse time, that is. Whether you’ve been feeling unsettled and edgy lately, or optimistic and eager to move your life in an exciting new direction, keep your antennae up and your eyes (and energy) focused on where you want to go. That will help you to take the steps you need (and want) to take.

ecl-lun-2011-12-10

Post-totality at a lunar eclipse in 2011, seen from Philopappou Hill, Athens, Greece. Photo by Anthony Ayiomamitis.

Remember, this is not the same as having expectations about what the next two weeks ‘should’ be like. Whether the eclipse effect in your personal life is subtle or dramatic, rest assured that it is working.

You can do your best to make conscious choices around opportunities and shifts in direction, but you can’t really force things. Even if you feel like you ‘miss your chance’ at something, you’ll likely get another (if different) opportunity down the line. So hang in there, and try to enjoy the ride. Monday’s Full Moon is exact just after 2:10 pm EDT / 18:10:33 UTC; the accompanying partial lunar eclipse peaks about ten minutes later, and is bookended by the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse.

If Your Birthday is Aug. 7
(The Day of the Double Agent) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
A lunar eclipse on your birthday only happens a few times in your lifetime. It indicates a shift in your social reality: a reorientation in your circle of friends and your relationship to the public, and taking a step toward having bigger, more adventurous dreams. Remember: your friends are the people who support you, especially when you need them most.

Written in the Planets
Happy astrological Lammas! Today is the much-anticipated lunar eclipse, preceding the considerably-more-anticipated solar eclipse in a couple of weeks. Regarding today’s event: as Amanda pointed out in her Thursday piece, anything taking place across the Leo-Aquarius axis tends to be about groups and how we relate to them. Leo describes standing out and letting your light shine; Aquarius is the great leveller of the zodiac. There’s often a thin line to walk between the two. Working with the energy of today’s eclipse may help you navigate that path.

In the Shadow of the Moon, the exciting 2017 Midyear Reading by Eric Francis, has just been published. The video readings for all 12 signs cover the Great American Eclipse of Aug. 21 and well beyond. We’ll be increasing the price again very soon, so don’t hesitate to order your copy here. You can also now choose your individual signs here.

“I have just listened to your Part 1 and Part 2 readings and I am amazed at how accurate it has been. Like you have a telescope watching me shed a skin and transform into a totally changed person in the last 10 years.”
— Pauline Jones

If you have a Leo Sun, rising sign or Moon, how are you feeling about your vision for your life, and in what ways are you ready to take action toward it? With a partial lunar eclipse on Monday in your opposite sign Aquarius (your relationship sign), the door opens to one stage of potential transition. In two weeks, on Aug. 21, a total solar eclipse in Leo signals the second stage of whatever life-shifting process you’re engaged with.

The reverberations from these two eclipses will keep rippling out and developing through the next six to twelve months — and Eric’s 2017-18 Leo Birthday Reading is designed to guide you through it all.

“The past few years have been very difficult on many levels and it has been the readings I get through you that keep me going. Always, absolutely right on, every one of them.”

Share what you do with the world. Offer your beauty, your ideas and your deepest personal expression. This may feel like you’re taking a chance of some kind, and in a sense you are: it’s called ‘putting yourself out there’. Do this in a bold way that’s meaningful to you; in fact, I suggest you try many different experiments. You will learn a little more with each.

Written in the Planets
Today the Moon enters Aquarius on its way to eclipseville. Chances are, by now you’ve got a clue regarding where in your life this event will show up; the wheels may already be in motion. Keep as steady a pace as you can. Planet Waves Daily Oracle for Aug. 5, 2017

Financial matters rarely take care of themselves; we need to roll up our sleeves and do something about them. Emotional matters are usually the same way; they don’t get better unless they get attention. Anyway, so far as I can see, you need the satisfaction of resolving something on your own terms: yet frequently those terms involve taking a passive approach. Gradually your motivation has been perking up, but it’s been easy enough to ignore. Over the next few weeks, you’re likely to be feeling highly motivated to get your life in gear; which is a beautiful thing as long as you connect the engine to the wheels. If you get the sense that the free flow of energy is blocked, it’s not actually about money or about love; it’s about your trust in your own creativity; trusting your ability to make a positive impact on a situation. I would ask you, what exactly would it take to get you there?

The Oracle is a daily mini-reading divined from our extensive Horoscope Archive. You can research any Planet Waves horoscope published since 1999 at the Horoscope Archive and Oracle.

If Your Birthday is Aug. 5
(The Day of Resolute Composure) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
You have no need to drag around the hang-ups of your parents. You might not think that’s what you’re doing, though it’s a pandemic. People who both succeed in life and are happy doing so always put down the karma of previous generations and make the choices that are right for them. You have nobody to impress, and nothing to atone for. This is worth the challenge.

Written in the Planets
If the last day or two saw you stubbornly misdirecting your energy (especially sexual energy) or overcompensating in some way, today may bring a sense of innate emotional understanding of why that was. A trine between Venus in Cancer and Nessus in Pisces is at play, picking up where last night’s Mars-Pallas square left off. You might even be able to infuse genuine compassion into a situation with seemingly karmic (or painful) complexity, now that you grasp it better. Keeping your thought processes grounded in your body-wisdom could help (that is, how does your body feel, and what does that tell you?). All of this is feeding into the approaching partial lunar eclipse and the space it will open up. Stay aware, and see if you can do some of what you love these next couple days.

Just in time for the Great American Eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017, you’ll have access to a helpful, excellent video astrology reading. These will be done by sign and rising sign; each reading is about half an hour. The price will be increasing soon. It’s now $88, and on Sunday it’ll be raised again. The final published price will be $111. You may pre-order here.

Entering the Eclipse Room

Dear Friend and Reader:

Here we are, on the doorstep of this summer’s eclipse season: on Monday, Aug. 7, at 2:10 pm EDT, we have an Aquarius Full Moon and partial lunar eclipse; then on Aug. 21, there’s the total solar eclipse and second Leo New Moon. You might be wondering how best to step into this metaphorical room once the door opens, and the chart for Monday’s lunar eclipse offers some ideas.

Pook’s Hill Lodge, Belize; photo by Hal Cohen.

Anytime you enter a room full of people, you encounter a specific dynamic: one in which you are aware of yourself as an individual and the impact you may have on the group, and are simultaneously aware of the group as an entity with its own presence and impact on you. At least, that’s the ideal.

Many people walk around completely oblivious to both sides of that equation, or else so over-focused on one side of the dynamic that they have no sense of the balancing half.

For example, someone who’s very egocentric might only be concerned about their own presence and making sure others respond to them. Someone with very low self-esteem might feel completely at the mercy of a group’s expectations and perceived pecking order, and think they have no impact on the other people at all.

It’s also possible not to give any of it much conscious thought. Yet here we are, just four days from an eclipse involving two very social zodiac signs: Leo (where the Sun is) and Aquarius (where the Moon will be). The Sun in Leo speaks to that idea of being aware of one’s own presence, and the influence or impact you can have on others. The Moon in Aquarius, on the other hand, relates to how group structures, customs and expectations affect you, particularly at the unconscious or emotional level.

If Your Birthday is Aug. 4
(The Day of the Guiding Light) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
Your idea of success must involve some form of advocacy or social justice. And it must omit any form of jealousy about anyone else’s success; envy has no place in one’s true life-purpose. Then you will be free to do your thing your way, and to work with your bold, creative ideas. Remember that you’re not here to play the game. You’re here to rewrite the rules.

Written in the Planets
We’re closing in on Monday’s partial lunar eclipse, and the sky is offering you a little boost to meet it. Today Jupiter in Libra squares Pluto in Capricorn. This is a symbol of motivation to achieve something. Wherever you’re feeling that urge, remember that whenever one carries a big stick (or vision, goal or impulse), walking softly is often integral to getting things done with minimal kickback from others. Keeping practical details in mind could help you avoid pushing too hard, yet still enable you to move toward the big picture in satisfying (and meaningful) ways.

If Your Birthday is Aug. 3
(The Day of the Dangerous Quest) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
It is said that faith can move mountains, and you can discover that in the coming year of your life. Faith is not hope. It’s not ‘aspirational’. Rather, it’s about a deep acceptance of your relationship to existence. Then there’s the forgiveness aspect, which is the true key to opening up one’s spiritual connection. Yet you can only find out through direct experiments.

Written in the Planets
The movements of Uranus and the Moon today suggest that lasting alterations generally happen in stages. Often, to change a habit or routine completely requires planning, perseverance and determination. Even the most inspired of epiphanies needs some groundwork in order to manifest the wonderful idea. If you have a vision for something new in your life, by all means have faith in it; just be prepared to back it up with operational details.

If Your Birthday is Aug. 2
(The Day of the Versatile Signature) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
You will thrive if you find the balance between work and play. Yet that’s not divided by the usual notions of activity, such as work during the day and play at night. Rather, you find it through integrating the two concepts in everything that you do. Bring curiosity and a sense of adventure into all of your experiences and you’ll discover your true talent.

Written in the Planets
Today Mercury and Vesta join forces in Virgo to guide your thoughts and words into an act of service. There are many ways that could look, from sharing helpful ideas to rolling up your sleeves and bringing some worthy endeavor to its next stage. Yet how can you know when you might be crossing the line from service into unhealthy self-sacrifice? Mercury and Vesta are still opposite Nessus in Pisces. Pay attention to any feelings of guilt, or the sensation that you’ve been down this road before and it has hurt you. Any act of service worthy of your devotion should simultaneously fill your well (though it’s up to you to know your limits and tend your basic needs). It will never ask you to snuff the inner fire that keeps your soul energized. That’s someone else’s voice.

This Week’s Horoscope for Leo by Eric Francis Coppolino

The spotlight is on Leo now, with Mars and the Sun streaking across the sky, and two eclipses soon to arrive between today and Aug. 21. This means your life is in transition; and if that is true, then it’s essential that you stay in contact with what you want. Mars, the planet of desire, will help you focus your goals, and erase any guilt or apprehension you may be feeling about being authentically bold. To live the way you want requires courage, on several different levels. Most people are easily given to living with difficult situations rather than taking the chance of changing them. Yet because you have so much energy (Mars and the Sun are both hot and fiery), it’s essential to dial in the power of Saturn. This is about discipline, careful timing and using structure to your advantage. Incremental changes are the right changes, at least for now.

If Your Birthday is Aug. 1
(The Day of Original Style) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
You need adventure in your life. Yes, you may be hesitating, though at least your idea of doing something bold exceeds downloading a new app. For you, it’s more like visiting a new country, or trying some form of art that you’ve never experimented with before. And certainly you need friends and lovers who crave the unknown as much as you do.

Written in the Planets
Does your way of expressing yourself (or even your leadership style) suddenly feel like it’s at odds with something you’ve been patiently, persistently planning and working toward? Today the Leo Sun squares the asteroid Pallas in Taurus. With these planets in fixed signs, you’ll have to remember to bring a little flexibility to your actions — and reactions — today. Whether any challenges come from others or from within yourself, remember to listen carefully. This is a time of testing; you can be bold, remembering that a small adjustment to your strategy now could mitigate resistance later.

Lunar Eclipse Preparation: Organizing to Shine

In one week and one day, we’ll experience the first of two eclipses: the Aug. 7 Aquarius Full Moon and partial lunar eclipse. That will open the door to the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse in Leo. These are the key midyear events; so you’ll want to notice whatever happens in your life this week, and the coinciding astrology, and use it to prepare yourself and get pointed in a direction that’s best for you.

july30-2017

Partial lunar eclipse from 2007. Photo by Steve Ryan.

Consider for a moment the Sabian symbols for the Full Moon eclipse degrees (the Sabians are a series of channeled symbols for each zodiac degree). For the Sun at 16 Leo, we get: “The storm ended, all nature rejoices in brilliant sunshine,” with the keynote, “The surge of life and love after a major crisis.”

Meanwhile, the symbol for the Moon at 16 Aquarius reads: “A big businessman at his desk,” with the keynote, “The ability to organize the many aspects of an enterprise involving a large group of human beings.” This pair of symbols, taken together, seem to speak of both the new space that opens up between eclipses for vibrant change and growth, and the clear need to get organized (within oneself and with others) to facilitate that.

If you’ve felt a little too overcommitted, distracted or overwhelmed with self-doubt to begin getting focused on your desired trajectory, it’s possible that the inherent energy peak of the Full Moon and partial lunar eclipse might come with some tension or sense of deadlock. As that comes to a head, it could offer some useful clarity.

If Your Birthday is July 31
(The Day of the Human Portrait) | Leo Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
The only change that matters is what happens inside you. External circumstances have only limited value or impact. Your inner reality is the one you live with from moment to moment every day of your life. The most significant changes you experience will be on the deepest emotional level, which will bring growth, maturity and confidence.

Written in the Planets
Venus enters Cancer today; this may bring up themes of caring, nurturing and empathy, within relationships and beyond. In particular, this transit would seem to ask how far we can expand our spheres of compassion or love. This might simply mean someone outside of your immediate milieu is in need of help you can best provide. Another possibility is that a close friend or family member could open up your understanding of a specific issue on a wider scale. Whatever the permutation, a growth opportunity such as this is usually well worth taking.
