Eric’s Video Debut — and This Week on Planet Waves

Dear Friend and Reader:

In today’s edition we’re thrilled to announce the advent of Planet Waves TV. Yes, Eric has dared to get in front of a TV camera, reporting in from his breakfast haunt, the Outdated Cafe in Kingston, NY. In the current edition he explains the double conjunction happening this week — Mars conjunct Uranus, and Venus conjunct Eris.

I’ve also covered this astrology in written form from a slightly different angle in this week’s Monday Diary.

Eric Francis in the second edition of Planet Waves TV. You can watch on Planet Waves or on our brand new You Tube channel.

In tonight’s edition of Planet Waves FM, Eric co-hosts with his music teacher Daniel Sternstein. The whole program is about astrology — the aforementioned conjunctions and much background on them. Daniel plays the role of the non-astrologer asking reasonable questions, and in the process he figures out the difference between a conjunction and a square.

In the second part of the program Eric takes a reader’s question about locational astrology, and gives an idea about how it works and how to use it well. Locational astrology is when you cast your chart for a place you want to live and assess how your life will be there.

Musical guests for the program are The Chromatics, the Indigo Girls and Jane’s Addition, all doing covers of songs by other artists. The program, which posts by 5 pm EDT, is worth hearing just for the Chromatics’ magnificent work.

Elsewhere on the Planet Waves website, in looking at what most religious dogmas teach us about the need to be ‘saved’ from our suffering, Amanda Moreno considers the idea that fully experiencing the physical density of the flesh is why we’re here.

In this week’s tarot reading, Sarah Taylor explores the re-emergence of The Fool — one of the cards that welcomed us into the New Year — and how your stepping up and out in your own life has started to make itself known. Masks are falling and liberation awaits.

The Chromatics; hear them on tonight’s Planet Waves FM.

The Sun-Chiron conjunction that’s still in effect in Pisces may be highlighting for you an awareness of past wounding, and your processes of healing and integrating. Guest-writer Christina Louise Dietrich, who has been chronicling her journey of reclaiming herself (especially sexually), writes of her latest strides, “What I didn’t expect was the actual felt and embodied presence of my literal 4-year-old self.”

Judith Gayle, in her latest foray into the current political moment, how it reflects the Uranus-Pluto square, and how we fit into it writes, “We’ve created the emerging outcome, we’ve crafted it for its lessons and its opportunities. Now we’ll see what we’ve produced.”

Len Wallick’s column for today chronicles Mercury’s move into Pisces after more than two months in Aquarius, and should appear on the Planet Waves website at about noon. You can read my column on the latest phase of this week’s jam-packed astrology on the website tomorrow.

This is a wild week; embrace unexpected sparks of opportunity, but watch your step and drive carefully. There’s a lot of energy building that you can put to real use.

Yours & truly,

Amanda Painter

The Last Week Before the Last Uranus-Pluto Square

Your Monday Astrology Diary

By Amanda Painter

On our way to the last Uranus-Pluto square in one week, the astrology is going to keep us on our toes — intellectually, emotionally, physically. Because it’s possible to take this week’s astrology at both the macro (or philosophical) level and mundane or physical levels, I’m going to touch on several of the major aspects that are in force during the first half of this week in more or less chronological order.

Today it’s worth noting that asteroid Ceres in Capricorn is making a square to asteroid Eris in Aries (exact at 4:37 am EDT / 8:37 UTC).

Although these are technically ‘minor’ planets, they’re underscoring a notable facet of one theme of the Uranus-Pluto square (and doing so from the same two signs): the sense that some sort of revolutionary shift is underway in gender roles, and in our own inner sense of its polarity and integration.

In the case of today’s Ceres-Eris square, the astrology seems to ask, ‘What happens when our old ideas of nurturing and motherhood push up against the fragmented realities of identity we’re living in today’s world? What does it mean to be a woman (or to nurture yourself) at this point in time, in a society such as ours?’

These questions get developed as Venus exacts its conjunction to Eris in Aries on Wednesday (exact at 11:18 pm EDT / 3:18 UTC). This is also the same day Mars conjoins Uranus in Aries and squares Pluto.

On the one hand, Venus could be seen as bringing some sense of unity to Eris just as Mars gets stretched and confronted by the evolution/revolution machine. It’s like the planets are saying that maybe it takes some receptivity and love and reunification of our highest values (and of our inner feminine) to hold space for that process Mars is entering into. In one sense, ‘Masculinity’ is being overhauled, and is playing catch-up to femininity (Venus went through the Uranus-Pluto square last week).

Consider also that Eris carries an element of subversion to it (witness Eric’s favorite example of Mercury conjunct Eris: Stephen Colbert’s amazing roasting of George W. Bush at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner several years ago). As Eric noted in an email to me, “Love is subversive. Sex is revolutionary.”

Gender Polarity, Balance, Integration: Sun-Chiron in Pisces and the Last Uranus-Pluto Square

By Amanda Painter

We’re entering a very rich couple of weeks of astrology right now. Some months, a Full Moon like we have today in Virgo might feel like the peak of energy, a big, dynamic turning point with which you can mark your life. And it still might be that for you personally — but it’s also part of a series of interrelated events that are feeding into something with potentially significant personal and collective ramifications.

That “something” is the last of the seven exact contacts of the Uranus-Pluto square on March 16. Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn have been dancing in this square aspect for nearly three years — but were in effect long before their first exact contact in June 2012, and their aftershocks will unfold over the next several years.

If these two planets have defined our current era, this next phase of that era asks us to get some perspective on what just happened and build toward a common vision. Not an easy task when you consider how hard it is for even a small group of people to agree where to go for dinner.

Astrologically speaking, the cosmos is giving us some clues. From where I’m sitting, one layer of clues are pointing to a correlation between how we give space to and integrate our gender polarities within us, our awareness of that process, and how that maturation within us might correlate to processes around us. You’ve heard the maxim “As above, so below”; you can also think of it as “As within, so without.”

Here’s what’s suggesting this theme of maturing and integrating gender polarities (particularly our inner masculine) in our immediate astrology: Saturday, March 7, the Sun conjoins centaur planet Chiron in Pisces at 11:21 pm EST (4:21 UTC Sunday). Setting the overall emotional tone for the whole weekend, the Moon ingresses Libra at 7:52 pm Friday (00:52 UTC Saturday), traveling through this sign until Monday.

On one basic level, the Libra Moon indicates sensitivity to relationship partners and a desire for harmony and balance with others. For the last three years, the Moon in Libra has also meant that the signifier for our emotional bodies and intuition is in direct contact with the Uranus-Pluto square. Notice this weekend how you feel about some of the personal-is-political issues that have become emblematic of our times, because those areas of upheaval, struggle and innovation are your examples of the Uranus-Pluto square at work.

So how does the Sun-Chiron conjunction in Pisces fit in? Consider that the Sun represents your mature ego, your awareness of yourself as an individual in the world. Consider also that Chiron — an immortal healer and teacher who sustained a mortal wound in mythology — was a centaur: a half-man, half-horse warrior. His half-and-half, “both and” status points to the themes of polarity and integration.

In a piece on Sun conjunct Chiron that Eric Francis wrote two years ago, he stated, “Sun-Chiron aspects can represent the very conditions that allow an immature man to grow into an expressive and responsible one.” He notes in that same article how in a woman, Chiron aspecting the Sun can indicate how she defines herself through the man she is with — until a transit from Chiron as it moves through the sky (and zodiac) prompts that identity orientation to shift.

This weekend, as the Sun and Chiron meet in mid-Pisces, you have a window to explore that kind of integration. In the same article, Eric wrote, “One thing that stands out about Sun-Chiron in Pisces is how as part of this process, men must make contact with their feminine side and their emotional nature, but without sacrificing their maleness.” You could say the challenge for women is to recognize the strength inherent in their feminine, emotional nature. Then you use that recognition to reclaim the sense of purpose and achievement associated with your inner masculine side.

Now, other than Sun-Chiron and Uranus-Pluto being exact within about a week of each other, what is linking them? Thematically, it has to do with this masculine/feminine polarity showing up in the astrology in another form.

Earlier this week, Venus (the planet symbolizing the inner feminine) conjoined Uranus in Aries and squared Pluto. Early next week, Mars (symbolizing the inner masculine) does the same.

What does it mean to have Venus pass through the culture-changing and era-defining Uranus-Pluto square so close to Mars doing the same, and so close to the last exact Uranus-Pluto contact? On a macro scale (rather than the personal), does it represent a revolution in feminine identity (or of how feminine identity shapes society)? Is it hinting to us how to break a deadlock and open up the space for maleness to see itself and mature collectively (Sun-Chiron)?

If so, it will likely take significant time before we see the ripple effect of this astrology in the world around us. However, we won’t see anything of the sort if we don’t pay attention to these shifts and opportunities within us — beginning this weekend.

For some deeper reading about this idea of reclaiming masculinity in a way that is holistic and healthy, see Eric’s article The Radical Notion that Men Are People.

The Big Picture, the Details, and All the Feelings

By Amanda Painter

On the mental level, this is a ‘big picture’ kind of weekend, one where you could get some really productive planning or creative visioning going. This is thanks to Mercury in Aquarius opposing Jupiter in Leo. At the same time, your emotional landscape will likely be varied (and palpable) thanks to the Cancer Moon making a variety of aspects.

The Mercury-Jupiter opposition is exact Sunday at 4:15 pm EST (21:15 UTC), but is in effect now.

Although oppositions sometimes get a bad rap as being ‘confrontational’ or energetically intense (think Full Moon), a Mercury-Jupiter opposition can come with a good dose of optimism. If you have any contractual negotiations needing your attention, creative projects ripe for collaboration, or similar sorts of discussions on the table, the astrology is favorable.

Oppositions often signify some form of push-or-pull type of tension we have to navigate with someone who’s coming from a contrary side of an issue. Yet oppositions also signify a meeting place where contact is made. Think in terms of partner dancing for an image: facing each other and then finding a way to move together through space.

Now, as with partner dancing, the devil is in the details. You can’t bump into someone on the floor, do your thing while holding their hands, and expect them to automatically mirror your moves without certain specific types of communication and agreement: Who’s leading, who’s following, and do those roles switch? Are we dancing tango, salsa, waltz or contact improv? Do we know the same basic steps?

Venus-Mars in Aries: Let’s Get Physical

By Amanda Painter

Yesterday the Sun entered Pisces, the last sign of the zodiac and the astrological year. Which means that spring for the Northern Hemisphere is only a month away, despite what you may see when you look outside (New England has been pummeled with snow this month). Inside, the planets indicate some real heat to go with the water of Pisces — and as you know, fire + water = steam.

Where’s that heat coming from? Venus and Mars (which enter Aries today and Friday, respectively) are meeting up to form a conjunction — their first of three the year (a rare occurrence).

It’s exact Sunday at 12:13 am EST (5:13 UTC), which is basically Saturday night for most of our readers, but it’s smoldering toward the red zone now. If you’ve been complaining about the cold, here’s your opportunity to warm yourself without needing a plane ticket.

Venus and Mars are two of the “personal planets.” That is, we feel their influence on a very relatable, personal, day-to-day scale. They also represent our respective feminine and masculine sides, present within each of us no matter what our sex, gender or sexual orientation.

One basic interpretation of a Venus-Mars conjunction is of opposite-sex-style erotic union with another person. But beyond that, it’s also about the intense merging of these two sides of ourselves within us: the anima (female / spiritual soul) and animus (male / animal soul) of the subconscious. These complementary facets of subconscious interact within you, and also magnetize toward each other between you and whomever you’re attracted to (whether in a heteronormative situation or not).

All’s Fair? Try Love, Not War.

Saturday is Valentine’s Day — a commercial holiday that either makes you giddy or fills you with dread if you buy into the hype, or leaves you completely nonplussed if you do not. Some fitting astrology is in the works this weekend, though you’ll have to choose for yourself how you use it.

On one level, it can be summed up as: all’s fair in love and war — until that point when things have gone too far. And then it’s not.

In other words, this weekend’s astrology is giving you an opportunity to question the old maxim. After all, it’s pretty cynical to equate love and war, even in the saying’s original 1579 form: “the rules of fair play do not apply in love and war” (from John Lyly’s novel Euphues: The Anatomy of Wit). Just a little something to ponder.

Astrologically, there are three main aspects contributing to this theme. Let’s take them one by one. Each aspect has positive constructive potential, and ways it might be challenging.

1. Mars in Pisces is square the centaur planet Pholus in Sagittarius. On the one hand, this could feel like it’s time to pop the cork on passion — to “Just do it,” push past any inhibitions and really go for what gets you hot and wet (or fired up).

The caveat: don’t let moodiness be a wet blanket if your expectations are not met (Mars in Pisces can get a little pouty). Expectations, whether positive or negative, can set you up for a big fall even on a normal day. With Valentine’s Day, that potential increases.

Intentional Expansion — and Mercury Stationing Direct

By Amanda Painter

Believe it or not, we’re in the last week of Mercury’s retrograde through Aquarius. Before you cheer, however, we have its “storm” phase to navigate in the days just before and after it stations direct Feb. 11. Along the way, there’s something akin to what Eric has called “a second Full Moon” (with a distinctly positive side) to make things interesting.

First, the pseudo Full Moon: Jupiter in Leo is making an opposition to the Sun in Aquarius, exact Friday, Feb. 6 at 1:20 pm EST (18:20 UTC).

Jupiter’s themes include expansion, optimism, righteousness, judgment and indulgence. In Leo, those terms merge with ‘heart’, ‘pride’ and ‘confidence’. Opposite the Sun, you’ll likely see an exaggeration of whichever of these themes are most present in your life — and you’ll see their expression in your relationships.

That’s the nature of oppositions: the root of any conflict, magnification or polarity/contrast is always within ourselves, but it takes its most visible, concrete shape as we interact with others.

With the Sun in Aquarius, you may notice an emphasis on how you see yourself within certain groups — or perhaps how you see yourself as moving through a group without feeling like you’re really a part of it. Aquarius carries an interesting interplay of the individual vs. group dynamic. As Amanda Moreno (who has her Sun in Aquarius) said last week in her column, “We Aquarians sure do love a good tribal vibe — even though we often feel like complete outsiders, or make ourselves that way.”
