Venus comes ‘home’ today to Taurus, the first sign it rules (the other being Libra). But guess what? Uranus is right inside the door, rearranging the furniture. Since Venus in Taurus tends to like its comfortable routines, environments that rarely change, and replicable sensory pleasures, this situation presents an interesting dynamic. And since Venus represents the ‘female principle’ — no matter your sex, gender, or orientation — along with love, receptivity, relationship style and some level of emotional and aesthetic sense, you may wish to tune in to these facets of your life especially carefully the next several days.

Where do you feel ready to change things up, or notice that changes are happening and you’re enjoying them (even if unexpectedly)? Where are you encountering resistance to a gnawing sense that something’s gotta give, or feel tempted to cling to how things have always been? Efforts to repress the need for new stimulation could manifest in some chaotic disruption. But a willingness to experiment may help to mitigate unwanted surprises.

Mars also moves to a new sign today (Cancer), but won’t get there until just after 11 pm EDT. So if you’re feeling an especially acute or hard-to-parse case of split desires, conflicting motivations or multiple frustrations until then, this may be why. Once Mars makes its move, track your emotional reactions. Some of what is feeding into that could be very old material (as in, relating to past generations — read Eric’s in-depth coverage of Mars entering the cardinal cross here). How you act on it, or assert it to someone else, could start a surprisingly far-reaching ripple effect. Luckily, Mercury and Neptune are conspiring to offer some intuitive help and — if needed — a brief, imaginative escape.

Chances are your feelings and actions will be relatively in sync today, thanks to a sextile between Venus in Aries and Mars in Gemini. This is looking like quite a social setup, with a nice balance between giving and receiving, friendship and sex, self-assertion and relating. Yet here’s the thing to be aware of: both of these planets are in the last degree of their respective signs. Plus, Venus is inching closer to Uranus the Awakener, and Mars is moving into contact with some planets dealing with deep and far-reaching themes. This could add up to an odd sort of edginess mixed in with your more affable, social inclinations.

For example, you may feel a little scattered or impulsive, or like you’re not sure if your interactions with others can handle all the energy you need to discharge. Opportunities to be social — particularly in a group setting, even if your conversations are all one-on-one — look like a balanced way to channel it all; though follow your instincts. If you encounter someone with great integrity and honesty, or who seems un-empathetic and inflexible, it will likely offer a clear barometer of how this astrology is manifesting for you, and you can then adjust accordingly. The Moon entering grace-and-beauty-loving Libra for the second half of the day will resonate with Venus and Mars. That should help to mellow things some, as those two planets both prepare to change signs tomorrow.

That said, it’s imperative to keep all actions completely above-board, ethically speaking; selfishness or excessive force are likely to come back to bite you down the road. Also, both Mars and Venus are in aspect to the centaur Ixion in Sagittarius, which brings in questions of amorality and second chances — especially in love, desire and sex.

If a situation feels similar to one from the past — particularly one in which you regretted any of your choices, or have learned valuable lessons from them — put that understanding into practice. The clearer you are about what’s truly motivating you (such as a wounded ego, or fear, or something missing from your childhood — as opposed to compassion, generosity or holding space for someone’s healing), the easier it may be to choose the option that serves the wellbeing of all involved.

You can expect the air at work today to feel extra social, and that vibe is likely to strengthen later tonight when you’re not restricted by workplace necessities. The Moon enters Leo this morning, making squares to Uranus and Mercury in Taurus later in the day and evening. By all means, heed the call for a little excitement and the need to express your wilder, more rebellious or amusingly dramatic side — just be sure you’re not being contrarian for its own sake. Blunt stubbornness has never been the life of any party, but a little spontaneity sure can be.

Note also that Venus is conjunct the dwarf planet Eris in Aries. On one level, this offers the potential to feel, and be compassionate toward, some of the less desirable, barely acknowledged facets of your sense of identity. This is not easy. Particularly in the era of social media, we’re all on an unspoken mission to promote only the most ‘interesting’, amusing or brag-worthy parts of our lives.

But an essential part of being human is to be gorgeously, perfectly flawed — without letting that be your only label, and without using it to manipulate others’ responses to you. Being direct about what you need and who you are could be intense for some people, but anyone close to you who supports your growth will likely be able to get over it. Today and tomorrow, Venus in Aries moves into contact with a few important planets. First among them: the square between Pluto in Capricorn and Eris in Aries. Venus-Pluto aspects tend to reflect intense emotional and/or sexual experiences. This may be especially true regarding changes in a relationship that need to be acknowledged and accommodated so the relationship can keep growing.

Eris in the mix is a red flag to stay aware of how noticing, processing and expressing these changes can feel a little destabilizing. After all, even though relationship dynamics shift because of individual changes that are already happening to the people involved, it can feel like a threat to one’s identity when a partnership is compelled to evolve. If that feels scary to you, it’s key to see it for what it is, and own your reactions; engaging in manipulative or attention-seeking behavior in an effort to hang on to what has been is only going to cause difficulty.

In fact, even if you simply run into someone new that you’re hot for, it would be wise to stay super-aware of when you might be tempted to seek their attention via particularly subversive or ‘sneaky’ methods. Thankfully you have some support, described by Venus making a trine today to Jupiter in Sagittarius. This speaks of fun, easy, lively social interactions. It’s an aspect that’s not known for a great deal of serious follow-through, however. That could help take the edge off any insecurity-based actions and reactions. If contentment sneaks in where you truly need to address bigger issues, just know you’ll have to face them sooner or later. So why not try it now while Jupiter has your back?

Evolutions of the Heart

Even though Venus has not yet entered Taurus — its own sign — to resonate with the Sun, it figures prominently in this week’s primary aspects. So that’s an immediate indication to notice where you’re at in your relationships (especially the ones where love, lust, and other big emotions reign).

You may have felt a little introspective in this regard beginning the week, as Venus in Aries squared Saturn in Capricorn. With the late-week aspects Venus is making, you may notice a shift to needing to express some energy around these topics. But how might that look?

We can get some clues from the other major aspects Venus is making. Today into tomorrow, it enters the Pluto-Eris square (squaring Pluto in Capricorn and conjoining Eris in Aries). Venus also makes a trine to retrograde Jupiter in Sagittarius (exact today).

One way to look at this overall configuration is that it’s asking a question about receptivity in our current moment — a question that relates to some much longer-term activity. If you’ve read and listened to the INTELLIGENCE annual readings for 2019-2020, you know that Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto all factor heavily in the marquee aspects that define late this year and next year. So you could think of this early contact by Venus as a way of warming up your most personal feelings about any process of growth and development you’re in currently, or which you think you might be headed for.

With Venus in Aries, we get the idea of initiative: what it feels like to just go for what you love; how to get started; the act of expressing emotions that put us in vulnerable or exposed positions. What’s at the heart of that? One answer might be: being seen and received for who you really are. How do you feel about that?

Today the Sun and Moon conjoin for the Taurus New Moon. Occurring at the midpoint of Taurus, this is happening at Beltane — the ancient Pagan cross-quarter holiday that marks the middle of the current season and celebrates our connection to the Earth itself. If you have actual seeds to plant, this is traditionally a good time to do so — and of course, the same holds for the metaphorical seeds of your intentions and desires for this next lunar cycle. Some general themes to keep in mind: anything relating to your body’s senses and your relationship to your body, sex, your values, the material resources you possess and those you’d like to cultivate.

Yet this New Moon is also in aspect to a curious array of minor objects. It appears that if you’ve been wrestling with a feeling of stuck-ness in some regard, there’s an opportunity to begin to move beyond that feeling — even just a little, and even if you’re convinced that’s not possible. Uranus is doing its part to surprise us all out of old habits, but let’s face it: sometimes that’s not enough by itself. After all, we tend to get by with a little help from our friends, and other objects in the New Moon chart suggest people who may be able to help lift you up or facilitate next steps. It’s also possible that in filling that role for someone else, you’ll indirectly energize your own cause.

Either way, see if you can get out in nature today or tomorrow. Make actual contact with the ground if weather and location permit — as in, bare feet or bare belly directly on the earth. Can you feel just how solidly you are being held by this planet, and offer some thanks to it in some way? Collectively, we’ve spent many years doing the opposite, but Uranus appears to be linking us to some ancestral support today if you feel inclined to invoke the wisdom of many generations past.

Breath and Butterflies, Blue and Beltane

On Saturday, we have a New Moon right at the midpoint of Taurus — the Beltane zone, when the ancient Pagans celebrated the fertility of the Earth by having sex out in the fields. I’m supposed to tell you all about this interesting chart, and I will; but to be honest, I’m still ruminating on some of the events and recurring themes I encountered last week while I was away, during the Sun’s first conjunction to Uranus in Taurus.

So if you’ll pardon the indulgence, I’m going to start there and will make my leisurely way to the astrology. You know how a Taurus hates to be rushed.

With the gracious support of my Planet Waves colleagues, I was just immersed in a weeklong intensive class in Orkney, Scotland — a particular method for freeing the breath and voice for theater — taught by its 83-year-old originator (and fellow Taurean) Kristin Linklater. It was a rather spontaneous opportunity, though it built upon my 2018 trip there for the same purpose.

During last year’s class, Uranus — “The Awakener,” the cosmic sparkplug — made its preliminary ingress into Taurus. During my trip this year, the Sun made its first of its annual conjunctions to Uranus in Taurus between now and 2025. I already knew before I got the email for the class (three weeks before it started) that it was exactly the way I wanted to return to the sense of ‘being in process’ that had marked last spring; the moment I noticed the Sun-Uranus conjunction would be occurring, it was like a bell rang.
