The Day of the Double Agent: Birthdays and Planet News

If Your Birthday is Aug. 7

Your birthday this year is highlighted by an interesting and somewhat intense first-quarter Moon. There’s a lot of energy about, though you’ll need to harness it and propel yourself forward, even if there’s a nice tailwind. One thing to be cautious of is making conclusive decisions too soon. Another is dispensing with ideas or resources you might perceive to be useless or wasteful, but could have hidden potential. One person’s weeds are another person’s sources of medicine.

Today, a trine with the Leo Sun looks like an infusion of greatly needed heart and soul — whether you’ve been struggling or have been coasting along okay. Jupiter-Sun trines usually spell good feelings, optimism, and not much motivation to trouble oneself with effort. Yet Jupiter is stationing direct in its home sign Sagittarius on Sunday. And with Jupiter currently slow, powerful, and pivoting conjunct the compelling signature of a deep-space phenomenon called the Great Attractor, you may find it worth motivating yourself to do a little more.

You can work this on the most basic, practical level by trying some new activity or area of study, or possibly a trip (Sagittarius loves a new adventure, and Leo is known for its courage, after all). Kicking things up a notch, maybe you’re reconnecting with a life-goal you’d let fall by the wayside, and can funnel some of this energy into pursuing it. If you’re picking up the pieces after a crisis — or you’re in the midst of one — you may find a way to catch a breather today.

Regardless, notice anything that seems to be showing you the larger patterns in your life. If the pattern only appears to be one of negativity, pain or loss, see if you can take another step back for a broader perspective. The whole picture is never just black or just white; and truly useful insights always shine some light on the path — even if they illuminate the need to climb over some boulders or double back a little to continue on your way.

You’re preparing for a gear shift, prior to making some substantive changes. This process could be triggered by certain external events, though at root this has to do with you wanting to leave some aspect of former times behind you. If you’re unsure how to begin, consider where the past may be leaking into your current life. Do you consciously think or say one thing, and then end up doing something different under pressure? That could be a sign of an underlying idea you may need to let go.

The centaur planet Pholus has been hanging on out on the Aries Point, via the first degree of Capricorn, for more than a month now. That’s one facet of the astrology that describes the dual sense of a chain reaction (or the genie let out of the bottle) and ‘didn’t we already deal with this ages ago?’ that marks so much of what’s in the news currently. If what’s been happening politically or culturally has felt especially personal recently — in a way that seems to have a life of its own — Pholus offers a clue to that.

Later today, Pholus retrogrades back into late Sagittarius. You might take this as a signal to revisit certain goals or broad visions you had earlier this year. Notice the steps you’ve taken toward them, and what those steps have led to. Do you still feel like you’re on track in moving toward your ideals? Did those ideals, or your sense of possibility regarding them, shift or get blocked or become more solidified? What have you been learning about how to structure them, or about what limits them, or about the initiative it requires to pursue them?

As you track the answers to these questions and begin plotting your next steps, bear in mind that small adjustments and actions could count for more than you’d expect. This goes doubly this week, with Jupiter slow and about to station direct in mid Sagittarius. The Moon moving into Scorpio for the later part of the day could intensify your feelings about all of this, or lend some sharpness to your reactions. This could be useful for getting to the feelings beneath the surface.

New ideas seem to be flowing into your mind like fresh, cool breezes. You are likely to be more in contact than usual with your intuition, and better able to understand concepts from a multitude of vantage points. Take every opportunity to feed your inspiration actively, however. Make a point of going places you’ve never visited — especially if you’ve always wanted to. Soak in experiences that nourish your love of life and of beauty. There is always more to see and do.

Jupiter has been retrograde in Sagittarius for quite a while — since April 10, to be exact. In a week, on Aug. 11, it will station direct. At the moment, it is stationary — that is, barely moving at all (well, barely moving according to our perspective here on Earth; the planet has been moving in its typical orbit the entire time, and is now). We’re approaching a turning point in all that Jupiter and Sagittarius represent: expansion, far-reaching vision, pursuit of focused intention (like the archer’s arrow), optimism and so-called luck, seeing wider patterns, belief systems and so on.

You may wish to consider areas in your life where any of those themes have felt fuzzy, under review or in some form of retreat, as well as lessons from the past that have been magnified or tested in recent months. I’ll have more about Jupiter stationing direct and some related Sagittarian activity throughout the week, but that should get you started.

Meanwhile, Mercury is about to leave the degree where it stationed direct in Cancer. Today it repeats its exact square to the asteroid Haumea in Libra. As you begin to move incrementally forward on projects you’ve had on hold the last three weeks, consider what you’ve learned about your emotional responses in that time. You may be ready to birth a new way of expressing them, even if the process arrives via unusual channels.

You may be feeling as if you want to break out of your current daily life and do something completely unfamiliar. This is likely to be based in deep-seated, intimate sensations connected with your development and healing on a fundamental level. Said another way, this is about something you need to grow toward, and behind it is an abundant well of energy waiting to be channeled. That’s where you come in: you set the direction, then steer into new and exciting territory with the wind at your back.

Is there some phase you’re trying to move through in a relationship, or a corner you’d like to turn in how you share your heart? Venus in Leo making a square to Albion in Taurus may describe the impetus to move some energy in that way. Think in terms of thresholds you’d like to cross and the doorways open to you, for another visualization of the steps you can take.

With the Moon in Libra, this is less likely to come through in an edgy way; there could even be a spirit of diplomacy, or wanting to be sure a sense of cooperation and teamwork are present. Venus in Leo can be bold and affectionate — though what counts as bold and affectionate for you will depend on your usual settings. Your dial may be turned up a lot or just a whisker at the moment.

The Libra Moon vibe stands in contrast to the Mars-Juno energy that’s been prevalent this past week. That conjunction in Leo is beginning to separate, but slowly. Again, the Libra Moon could help temper the more competitive side of this aspect in relationships, though the effect will vary depending on the people involved and the specific situation.

If you want to make more of a positive difference in the world, this year’s astrology suggests you have the resources — whether it’s money, time, energy or ideas. You might need to use some discernment prior to making a firm decision, though do be sure to consider the opportunities offered you. Part of this exercise seems to be about finding your present vocation, and building on your self-confidence. Few things can do that like knowing you’re in a position to help someone, or several someones.

Mars and Juno make an exact conjunction in Leo today, though they’ve been moving in tandem for a while now. Primarily this constitutes a reminder to keep tabs on scorekeeping, one-upmanship, boasting and selfishness — especially with people of the opposite sex, and particularly in intimate relationships, though this could crop up anywhere things get a little competitive or ego-driven.

Ego is not a bad thing, inherently; a healthy ego is necessary to getting almost anything done, and to having a sense of oneself in the world. Yet when the ego feels threatened, it tends to get over-defensive. You may need to be the one to offer gentle reminders that help to keep things functional if a situation gets heated, and that could take extra effort.

On the other hand, there’s something about Juno and Mars in Leo that suggests the kind of assertion in love and sex that could fire things up in an enjoyable way. If you can throw some flames and your partner or prospect can serve it right back in the spirit of saucy competition, the playful rather than prideful side of Leo might come out.

Mars and Juno conjunct in Leo also speaks to me of something else: a very creative type of partnership, where the activeness of one person fires up the courage of the other. Or, perhaps, the type of inner frisson (caused by some metaphorical fission?) that accomplishes the same thing — with Neptune nudging things along in imaginative (if sometimes awkward) ways. Mercury being in the position it is suggests the continued need to ‘be real’, and to keep treading carefully with communication. Watch your assumptions, and notice the emotions behind them.

You’ve gained a number of skills over time, and the year ahead will probably provide an opportunity to use them all. Changes are happening. Using your gifts wisely should help you steer matters in a useful direction, and navigate through any difficult areas or sudden plot twists. You have more versatility than you may think, and resources you can use even in the thickest of briar patches, if needed. You also possess a certain innate charm at this time, which might help open some interesting doors.

The Moon entering Virgo this morning could describe taking a slightly more cerebral or analytical approach to emotional issues and responses that have cropped up recently. In fact, solving problems and putting things in order might actually offer some emotional satisfaction, especially if doing so helps someone else as well as you. Just keep the lines of communication open — which generally means asking lots of questions and then really listening to the answers, or saying what you plan to do before you do it. Mercury is still stormy after stationing direct Wednesday night (and rules Virgo), so it’s a little early to try and charge ahead full-throttle.

Both Venus and Mars are in Leo, and both are making aspects that could translate to some level of relationship disruption or intensity. So a Virgo-style approach may help to balance any possible flare-ups, as long as everyone feels heard and empathized with. Flexibility is key here: remember that minds need not be set in stone, and even emotions are far more subject to our ability to choose them consciously than people often realize. Yes, you feel how you feel; but not all reactions belong in the drivers’ seat. Sometimes they’re just signposts telling us where we are and why, and point the way toward a new understanding of ourselves. If we’re willing to read them thoroughly, that is.

Think of shaping who you are as an ongoing experimental process. As the map of the sky is constantly shifting, so you are continually becoming and renewing from moment to moment. You will only stagnate if you are determined to. That means ultimately you have the power to choose who you want to be, and to alter course as necessary to get there, which is an amazing gift. Therefore, don’t surround yourself with imaginary walls. Keep your evolution moving and your ideas along with it.

Mercury stationed direct last night, but it will take a few days to sort itself out (and another couple of weeks before it clears where it was retrograde). This also means it’ll stay in contact with Eris in Aries and Haumea in Libra for a bit longer, so the message to ‘get real’ stays valid for a while. (Well, really, that message is always valid, but it’s being emphasized in a particular way currently.) How’s your sense of humor doing this week? Continue keeping it handy, as things could still be a little glitchy for the next several days.

Also, what has newly come to your attention as of yesterday or today? Was it something someone said to you, something you intuited or discovered about a situation, or a realization you came to about yourself? How does it change the circumstances, or your view of things — or do you find yourself trying to ignore it or rationalize it away? There may be a particular opportunity to cross a threshold now in how you express yourself, though it will take a deliberate step in that direction.

You may feel like this requires courage; yet really, it’s just a matter of actively being who you are. Shouldn’t it take more courage to be who you are not? And yet that is the choice so many of us make every day, to some degree.

Venus in Leo square Uranus in Taurus (exact tomorrow) describes an urge to spice things up, especially in relationships or with those you’re ‘friendly’ with. Just remember there’s often a fine line between playful, flirtatious provocation and picking a fight. As with beauty, this distinction may lie in the eye of the beholder — i.e., not the person instigating things — and Mercury’s condition describes the potential for continued mixed signals. Here is your mantra: try something new, play a little, keep your sense of humor, be real and if something feels ‘off’ or upsetting, for Pete’s sake gently ask for clarification.

Three Leo Aspects and Mercury Direct in Cancer

By Amanda Painter

Mercury stationed direct last night in late Cancer, just after the Leo New Moon. It will take a few days for Mercury to sort itself out, though, and it’ll be another couple of weeks before it clears where it was retrograde. So your patience and sense of humor could still be handy companions for a while yet.

Partly this is because Mercury will stay in the same degree where it stationed for a few days — it takes a while to get back up to its typical apparent speed — which means it’s in extended contact with Eris in Aries and Haumea in Libra, forming a T-square.

Another factor in the overall astrological environment is a square between Venus in Leo and Uranus in Taurus, exact tomorrow, and a couple of other Leo aspects. I’ll get to those in a moment.

For now, has anything of particular interest emerged for you yesterday or today? As in, did you discover or realize something about yourself, or did someone tell you a key piece of new information, or did your intuition about a situation get confirmed or contradicted?
