Today’s Libra Moon will be picking up on a longstanding aspect pattern in the early cardinal signs. Getting the Moon involved could make it feel more personal, or may bring in a less conscious layer of emotional response to old material that’s been making itself known lately. If you’ve been feeling indecisive about how to handle certain familial patterns or baggage, the influence of Libra could add to your vacillation. Then again, you may discover a balancing effect — a moment of equilibrium that allows you to see your situation with a little more grace, or to express it to a partner with real diplomacy.

Meanwhile, Mars in Cancer is moving into contact with Saturn, Pluto and Neptune this week. Given the option between digging into any kind of power struggle and using your empathy or imagination to help others (or to take your own new tack forward), which feels like it will be more beneficial and enjoyable in the long run? On one level, this week’s astrology is describing some very insistent and action-oriented themes, related to Mercury making the same aspects in the cardinal signs that Mars has been making. At the same time, we have activity in mutable signs lending their own sense of movement, in their own style.

To start with, Mercury is currently in early Cancer.

Over the next couple of days it makes squares to Makemake and Logos in Libra, an opposition to Quaoar in Capricorn, and squares to Salacia and Chiron in Aries (it opposed Pholus in Capricorn on Wednesday). So we’re still working with ideas about how family and generational patterns play out; what we think of ‘secret’ sexual material and how it does and does not get spoken about; and the ‘mystery’ and logic of how things have come to be the way they are.

Just a few hours after the Moon enters its home sign of Cancer today, Mercury also enters Cancer. Having the symbol of emotions and the symbol of the mind both in such an especially sensitive, receptive, cyclical sign could indicate a day when suddenly everyone seems to be feeling much more deeply than they were just a day or two ago. Yet those feelings and impressions could ebb and flow frequently. So it might be a wise idea to choose your environments, companions and other sensory inputs consciously, particularly if you’ve been feeling at all overwhelmed lately.

Over the course of today and tomorrow the Moon will echo the major aspects that Mars recently made to objects early in the cardinal signs; Mercury will do the same over the course of this week. This suggests an emotional-level and mental-level encounter with whatever issues of anger and desire came up for you in late May — and with the familial/generational and social/political layers of that material. With Mercury in the Moon’s sign, there could be an especially intuitive understanding that comes through, and listening (over reading) might play a bigger role.

Mercury in Cancer can also be an especially imaginative placement, with some fine print: it helps to find creative ways to express your mind’s meanderings. Give it a job, a purpose; this should help prevent your imagination from turning inward and growing small fears and problems into outsized versions of themselves. The Gemini Sun opposite the Great Attractor offers another reminder to keep perspective on anything that feels too large to understand clearly, especially if you find it particularly compelling in any way. There’s plenty else surrounding you to help you keep your bearings.

Mercury’s conjunction to the asteroid Chaos today in Gemini suggests multivalenced creative thought is possible, especially in a kind of primordial way: that state before things evolve into their full shape. Yet Mercury and Chaos are also square Borasisi in Pisces: a suggestion that your need to express these ideas (in speech, action or some form of creation) could be at odds with some long-held belief — one that may actually represent a fiction of some kind. What happens to your perspective on this belief in the process?

Meanwhile, Mars in Cancer is making a square to the asteroid Pallas in Libra. This could describe some kind of emotional reaction against a more ‘political’ or diplomatic way of relating to people that you think you’re supposed to use, especially to please them. In other words, pay attention to any need to push against someone or something in a way that indicates you’re not standing in your power as an adult. Can you express yourself directly, from a place of balance, without the full emotional charge? It’s not the same as being diplomatic, because you’d still be saying and doing what you really mean, but it’s less likely to scuttle out sideways like an angry young crab.

In our world of extensive social commitments, tribalism-via-internet, and the peer pressure of social media ‘likes’, it can be challenging to retain genuine independence. Today in particular it could feel imperative to guard and tend those parts of yourself that don’t quite fit in with everybody else, or which you’d actively cast off at some point. This is described by a Vesta-Eris conjunction in Aries. Remember that you don’t actually have to go to sneaky measures to accomplish this; you’re far stronger when you can stand unabashedly at your center and let that motivate you to do what matters most to you.

Today is also the last quarter Moon, with the Pisces Moon square the Gemini Sun. With duality the name of the game on both conscious and subconscious levels, what do you need to do to feel integrated in what you express to others? If you’re in a rough patch, this question could come up through a mini-crisis of some sort; if you’re having a relatively smooth weekend, you may feel an infusion of creative energy you can use as you wish.

A trine between the Moon and Mars in Cancer is offering physical energy and emotional vigor for projects, including group work. Getting moving in any form will likely feel good (and if water is involved, so much the better). You may also feel more confident today in sharing certain emotions — though with the Sun square the Moon, you’ll want to choose your words carefully to be sure the message that is heard is the one you want to send. Hidden tensions could make their way out regardless; uncomfortable is that can be, it does give you the opportunity to deal openly with what needs to be addressed.

Mars, Chiron and You

As Mars makes its way through Cancer — and thus through a series of potent aspects to many of the planets defining much of current life — it reaches a key marker today: its exact square to Chiron in Aries. This event would have a personal feel to it no matter what. But with Mars in emotional, protective Cancer, and with Chiron in a sign Mars rules (one related to the concepts of self and identity), there’s a picture of taking things very personally indeed — perhaps in ways that could feel challenging.

As has been mentioned elsewhere on Planet Waves recently, western society (particularly the U.S.) has Mars issues. There’s a tendency to default to aggression when fear is encountered, and most people seem to be afraid of a lot these days; for sure, there are a great deal of scary things in the world, and mainstream media often appears crafted specifically to emphasize that fact.

Yet, in addition to all the things ‘out there’ to be afraid of, many people harbor tremendous doubts about what’s inside of them: their desires and sexuality, emotions, needs, dreams, gifts; many doubt whether there’s really anything at all inside that’s deserving of love and acceptance.

In the last year or two I’ve witnessed a few situations in which someone received the affirmation that they are enough, just as they are. Their response to that affirmation has generally been emotional: an outflowing of relief at being seen fully, mixed with grief over the years of feeling disconnected from a sense of wholeness, mixed with disbelief that the affirmation could possibly be true, given how long it has not felt true.

Those emotions could also come out as aggression if someone is too far from a place of being able to hear, feel or even glimpse the message. Anyone who does not feel free to express deep emotion has the potential to lash out in defense of those vulnerable, terrifying parts of themselves.

In our current overall climate of ‘identity politics’ taking over for an embodied sense of individual identity, it can feel as though the stakes are high to hang on to who you are in the face of rapid and overwhelming cultural change. One question that may arise today is: how can you bring your full self into contact with the changes around you, rather than sacrificing the core of what makes you ‘you’? Another question might be: are you feeling at all obsessive about protecting the ‘purity’ of your identity in some way? (Both are suggested by Vesta and Eris in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn.)

A ‘yes’ to either question could make expressing your desires (or your anger) in confident, constructive, and energetically neutral ways challenging, thanks to a square between Mars in Cancer and Chiron in Aries. This could easily manifest as some kind of outburst — followed by an apology. Conditions increasing this possibility include: feeling like you don’t deserve to have your desires met; some degree of shame about your desires or emotions (including anger); or feeling too ‘out there’ or ‘broken’ in some way.

Remember that having desires and emotions is the birthright of every human — and that there are ways to engage with those around you on these topics that still leave room for everyone’s honest ‘yes’, ‘no’, and ‘maybe’. When the Moon enters Aquarius at 1:49 pm EDT, it should offer a more rational space from which to approach your reactions and interactions. Think ‘non-attachment’ rather than ‘chilly’, and you may find yourself open to some new ideas and feelings about them. There is plenty of space for who you are.

Mars in Cancer can be wonderfully protective; the thing is, that energy works its best when it’s used to protect loved ones in need of someone to stick up for them. When Mars gets into self-protective mode, it can be rather prone to overdoing it when those big crab claws come out. That brings us to today’s key Mars aspects: squares to Logos in Libra and Salacia in Aries (with a square to Chiron in Aries exact tomorrow). Squares manifest as internal tension, and respond well to taking action to address it.

Internal tension, given Mars’ current condition, could be a little tricky to handle. Consider also that sexual healing (a Chiron-Salacia theme) and how one conceptualizes one’s closest relationships (Logos in Libra) are pretty sensitive topics. Most people seem have something to feel defensive about in those departments. Yet, that sensation comes more from the pressures of family patterns and social expectations than from actually being ‘wrong’ in one’s desire, emotions, experience or relationships. What can you do today that’s expressive rather than defensive in any of these realms?

Do you know the difference? Think of it this way: being defensive is a way to push someone away without truly letting them know your pain, fears, worries or deepest desires. Expressing those feelings (in a non-aggressive way that can be received openly) tends to come with a feeling of vulnerability or risk — but can pay off big through increased intimacy with others and security in oneself.
