Soak in the many beauties in the world around you with relish. Whether it’s greenery, animals, architecture or something else, there is generally a good deal to notice and admire wherever you happen to be. Doing this helps you reinforce your feeling of connection with all things, including with whatever spiritual beings or principles you hold in the highest reverence. It may also provide creative inspiration, which you can express in the ways that come naturally to you.

Today could involve rather tenacious-yet-adaptable thinking, as Mercury moves into a conjunction with the centaur planet Asbolus (exact tomorrow). Asbolus is often associated with issues of survival. However, Mercury is also square Neptune in Pisces today. There seems to be a caution here against becoming overly tenacious in idealizing a person or situation. If you find yourself continually adapting the story you tell yourself about them to accommodate certain shortcomings of theirs, it might be time for a reality check.

Mercury-Neptune squares are also classic astrology for confusing communication, misleading statements, and withholding information. You can do your part to mitigate this possibility by choosing your words carefully — which implies slowing your mind down enough to consider the potential to be misunderstood, and then saying what you actually mean to say. Don’t keep something back if it could be useful to someone. With Mercury also moving into an opposition with Jupiter, it’s key to continually check your perspective against the details and the bigger picture these next few days.

Celebrate your grounded persistence. Not everyone possesses the fortitude and sheer determination you seem to tap into on a regular basis, particularly in the face of inner struggles. Yet here you are, beginning a new year with your creative fire burning bright and a lust for life sparking something in your unconscious. And while it’s true that all wealth comes from the Earth, it’s how you channel that wealth — in terms of your considerable life force and how you offer it to others — that will enrich this next year the most.

Do you want to do All The Things today? That’s a distinct possibility, given an opposition between Mars and Jupiter. With those planets in two signs particularly prone to split attention and scattered energy (Gemini), and the big picture and a need for freedom (Sagittarius), the ante gets upped.

Can you stay self-aware in any needs and desires that you feel to tackle everything? Can you keep from sliding into defensive selfishness in the face of anyone or anything threatening to restrict you? Do beware of domineering behaviors and overestimating your abilities. But if you can stay mindful of the legitimate limitations of your physical and mental energy — and understand the full scope and many facets of your situation — you may very well succeed in your efforts.

Also note that the Taurus Sun this Beltane is square the asteroid Psyche in Aquarius. Sometimes stubbornness has its uses — one of these being persistence in pursuing one’s mental and emotional healing. Infusing that process with a sense of genuine devotion to your inner spirit, you could make some real progress, especially if you let an eccentric or innovative idea give you a nudge. Make and hold space for all of who you are — including your identity as a fully sexual being alive on planet Earth at a very curious time, indeed.

Pay attention to any urge you have to bring something new into the world, whether it be through an artistic process, coming up with an invention, having an actual baby, or whatever it is you want. If you have a few concerns, by all means give them due consideration, and do as much research as you see fit. It would certainly be useful to have an idea of the work involved. Ultimately the decision is yours.

We’re approaching the Libra Full Moon later in the week, on Friday. So this is an early reminder to watch for any interpersonal standoffs beginning to emerge. Today, the Moon enters Virgo to lend some grounding and practicality to otherwise less-disciplined aspects. Venus in a conjunction to the minor object Borasisi could be causing a bit of a blind spot in relationships at the moment. This appears to relate to emotion-based beliefs (which most are, if you think about it), or possibly to what counts as ‘spiritual’ when it comes to sex and love. On the other hand, it could translate to how you embody your beliefs about love. Are your actions as ‘spiritual’ as you like to think they are with your intimate partners?

Venus and Borasisi are also in a square to retrograde Jupiter in Sagittarius. With both of the signs that Jupiter rules involved, there’s a pretty clear indication to beware overindulgence, especially regarding food, drink, shopping and perhaps any purely escapist pursuits. That said, spending time doing what you enjoy will likely be the direction to lean in, particularly with friends or lovers. If you feel like you’re tapping into some higher vibes, you’re likely on the right track.

Take advantage of opportunities offered to you; it would seem that most doors you approach will tend to yield more easily just now. Whatever good fortune you receive is likely to have been long since earned, so you need experience few qualms if any in accepting it. As you enjoy your blessings, though, remember to keep your word and stick to your principles, including honoring any promises you’ve made in the past.

No matter how divided your desire, motivation or general energy level feels now, it looks like there may be one specific promise you’ve made that requires you to follow through on it. The question is: is this an oath or commitment you’ve made to someone else or to yourself? It may be time to bring your considerable mental energy into more tangible form in some way. There’s some help at present, in the form of a trine between the Aries Sun and Jupiter in Sagittarius. At the very least, this should bring a sense of harmony, peace and overall good feelings into your day — which may come as a relief, given recent tension in other facets of life.

Consider how you can expand your experience or understanding of the world today; with Jupiter retrograde, that could include seeking to increase your self-understanding. While that’s a more introspective approach, it need not be completely passive. If you’re feeling good, why not put it to actual use and see what you learn in the process — or at least share the good vibes?

The Day of the Policy Makers: Birthdays and Planet News

Spend some time forging a manageable balance between work and play. The optimal arrangement is different for everyone, and generally depends on the nature of your vocation, as well as your various ambitions, desires and needs. It has less to do with social expectations, relationship escalators or what you think anyone else wants from you. Start with what you consider to be the ideal picture, and work out the details from there.

Keep checking everything from different viewpoints today. That may go double for things like beliefs, which have a habit of resting on emotion and inherited narratives more than on facts. The more flexible you can be in this, the more likely you are to catch any gaps in your understanding — or in an otherwise decent plan or business transaction. Mercury may be direct, but it’s still in its post-retrograde ‘shadow’ phase in impressionistic Pisces.

Today Mercury makes a conjunction to an object called Borasisi (named after a fictional god in Kurt Vonnegut’s Cat’s Cradle), and also squares Jupiter, which just stationed retrograde in Sagittarius. Mercury-Jupiter squares tend to offer useful optimism for ambitious goals and big-picture ideas, but details can be elusive. To guard against rash or poor judgments, it may be helpful to be very methodical — no matter how sure you are that everything happens for a reason, and that everything will be fine. After all, sometimes the ‘reason’ something goes awry is to bring our attention to what we overlooked and could have easily caught. Why not be proactive?

Reflections from the Perfectly Imperfect

By Amanda Painter

Have you ever looked at your reflection in the water with the Sun directly behind you? Your reflection ends up being mostly a silhouette that’s gently distorted by the movement of the water; and though you can’t see your own features very well, you can see all the color and detail of what’s behind you — it’s just softer than if you turned and looked directly at where you are.

It occurred to me this might be one way to think of tonight’s conjunction of the Sun with retrograde Mercury in Pisces.

Due to the compression of your perspective with the source of illumination, you may not be able to see yourself as others see you right now. Yet you might find a new, gentler appreciation for where you’ve been — a view with softer edges but no less imagination-sparking (or growth-sparking) insight.

After all, Mercury retrogrades really are about slowing down and reassessing more than they’re about everything getting glitchy and going to hell in a handbasket. As I saw suggested elsewhere, those hiccups are generally the result of us fallible humans refusing to slow down, pay closer attention, and retrace the steps that got us where we are now (or where we have been many times). It’s trendy these days, even for people who scoff at astrology, to blame everything that goes wrong on Mercury being retrograde — even when it isn’t.

Stretch into your visionary abilities: the power of your intuition and the breadth of your perception. There will always be moments when you are tempted to respond with a hot head, or to confuse emotion with philosophy. The present environment encourages that behavior. However, if you can keep in mind to pause and check in with your ethical compass, you will have access to a profound, wise and accurate source of inner guidance.

Written In The Planets
How’s your energy level — physical, mental, emotional, sexual, psychic? There are some agitating factors in the sky currently; yet we’re also just two days from a New Moon. So if you feel under pressure but also lack the ‘oomph’ to deal with it head-on (or in any way productively), there are correlations in the astrology. Namely: Mercury stations retrograde in the last degree of Pisces tomorrow; Uranus leaves the last degree of Aries to enter Taurus on March 6; and later that day the waning Moon meets the Sun for the Pisces New Moon. The New Moon is also square the polarizing Great Attractor (a deep-space phenomenon in mid-Sagittarius).

One way to deal with all of this is to go inward — to make a little space for yourself to settle down, settle in and take inventory of where you’re really at. Yet Jupiter is making a conjunction today to Varda, an object named after the deity associated with light in J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendarium. If you feel more called to express yourself outwardly, it appears that any offerings of light will probably go big. Just take your time to think everything through carefully, and mind previously identified boundaries. Mercury is entering trickster mode. Double-check all emails and texts before you click send.

A Full-Moon Pholus on the Solstice

By Amanda Painter

As you likely already know, late tomorrow the Sun enters Capricorn for the solstice. The next day, we get a potent-looking Cancer Full Moon. So we’re about to enter a moment of (possibly) heightened emotions, layered on top of cultural holiday busy-ness, layered on top of a seasonal point of contraction and interiority, all nestled into the personal-is-political Aries Point — with a twist.

These are days to keep a finger on the pulse of how you’re feeling.

What catches your attention as a possible synchronicity or as having meaning, and what (or who) starts to trigger your reactivity? Are you going along with the crowd because it’s expected or you’ve ‘always done this’, or is a small, inner voice whispering something about needing to spend a little time differently this year?

To help you get your bearings, here’s the timing of the main astro events: on Friday, Dec. 21, the Sun enters Capricorn at 5:23 pm EST (22:22:37 UTC), immediately making a conjunction to the centaur Pholus (technically exact the next day). That’s the “twist” I mentioned, and I’ll come back to it in a moment.

At 11:28 am EST (16:27:54 UTC) on Saturday, Dec. 22, the Moon ingresses Cancer. Then, just over an hour later at 12:48 pm EST (17:48:29 UTC), the Cancer Moon and Capricorn Sun oppose each other.

With a Full Moon in the very first degree of Cancer, we’re ringing the bell of the Aries Point pretty strongly (the Aries Point is the first degree of Aries, which resonates with the first degree of all the cardinal signs: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Cap). I know many people don’t pay as much attention to the news on the weekends, though with social media interaction it still may enter your awareness. Even so, you might want to pay attention to it over the next few days.
