Listen For Echoes

Prick up your ears. Listen to the world as well as your own heart. Feel the wind in addition to your own intuitions. Look up and out as well as within. You are approaching a time to gather in with all your senses. Not to judge. Judgement can wait. Not necessarily to draw conclusions either. Rather, you approach a time to listen for echoes, but not from the past.

len-wallick-logo

As this week draws to a close, begin to listen for echoes from the future. You have the ability to discern them. It’s not absurd to do so. It just takes a bit of conscious practice.

First, it’s a matter of timing – knowing the best time to listen. Astrology helps with that. Then it’s a matter of knowing what not to listen to (or rather what to consciously tune out).

The best time begins nearly three weeks before every time Mercury stations retrograde. Many astrologers call it a shadow phase. Years ago, Eric proposed the more positive and empowering alternative term ‘echo phase.’ Either way, it is a both a period of time and a slice of the zodiac.

The first echo/shadow phase takes place when Mercury in direct motion enters the part of the zodiac where it will retrace its path in apparent reversal only weeks later. The second echo phase comes after the retrograde is over, when Mercury moves through the same area a third time. Think of a windshield wiper moving in its confined arc three times – once towards the left (direct), then towards the right (retrograde), then left again (direct again) to get the idea.

Just as the first swipe of a windshield wiper gives you some idea of what to expect from the second (and even third) swipes, Mercury’s first echo phase implicitly contains information. The important thing to grasp, however, is that the information is not fully formed and organized, like data from the past. Rather it is like a scent on the breeze. Echoes from the future consist of hints which repeat and add up. Your place in the process is to actively listen for patterns, and do the adding up.

That first swipe begins less than 24 hours after Mercury enters Libra shortly after 11:44 am EDT (15:44:25 UTC) on Thursday, and will continue until Mercury retrograde commences on September 17. Now is a good time to make plans to start your active listening, because you will probably have to change your personal routine a bit in order to do so.

One of the best ways to pick up echoes from the future is to turn off the television and otherwise turn away from the pasteurized process product called news. That’s because most of what is called news is anything but new.

Instead, presuming you are blessed with ambulatory ability, walk the streets in your neighborhood. As you walk, pay attention to all you meet. Listen to everybody you either meet and engage with or overhear. Listen for patterns in words, phrases, attitudes and viewpoints. Ride a bus and do the same. Or sit in a coffee shop. Or go to a park and watch people play softball, soccer, or basketball. The possibilities are nearly unlimited.

As this week draws to a close, leave the manufactured world for spaces where people gather as much as possible. Not just people either. Assuming you are patient enough to get into their groove, listen to birds singing, dogs barking, babies crying, children playing, and any form of voice that comes your way.

Additionally, watch the skies, whether cloudy or clear. Indeed, let every form of sensory input which is not processed through electronic media tell you something. Pay special attention for what you are told over and over. If you give your effort enough time for a sufficient number of times, you will catch on.

The future really does echo, especially in the weeks before a Mercury retrograde. You really can bring meaning to those echoes as well. All it takes is a bit of intent, some planning, and your ability to follow through by getting out into the other world (besides the world of electronic media) where Mercury manifests in a wholly different way.

For of all the ways Mercury manifests, the most important is how it does so through you. You have the ability to do more than just listen. Within your power is the ability to be the mythical messenger you would want others to be for you.

Yes, you can for all practical purpose deliver the sort of messages you want to hear from the world. But you must hear the world first. Now would be a good time to get started making plans for how to do that, and change your life just enough to listen for echoes from the future.

Time Traveling and Shadow

This week I found myself time traveling. Astrologers can do that, you know. I animated my natal chart so that I could watch the movement of transiting planets over the chart as I clicked the “forward” button. I’ve played this little game before, but it’s been a while and I was wondering about the timing of the next Pluto-Uranus opposition, and whether it would hit any major points in my chart. Yes, indeed it will — if I am still alive.

One of the first things I tell people during a tarot or astrology reading is that I don’t predict the future and I cannot tell them what to do.

I believe that astrology and tarot are excellent predictors of spiritual and emotional trends, and that free will comes in when we decide how to act based on those trends.

The interplay of fate and free will is such a tightly orchestrated little dance, I don’t like to give the divination tools too much power. I also believe it’s important not to ignore them altogether.

As someone who has a whole bunch of planets grouped together in fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius), any time a slow-mover like Saturn or Pluto trudges through one of them I tend to experience a whole lot of change. Being able to see that there will come a time, in that far off place I call my fifties, when Pluto is on my Descendant and Sun at the same time as it opposes transiting Saturn on my ascendant helps me to contextualize what I’m going through now as a kind of preparation for that later phase.

I’ve also joked at times about quitting astrology until a given transit is over. Just ignoring it for a bit. The temptation to project all kinds of fear or anxiety over a set of symbols can be tempting. The gift of being able to prepare, however, is such a blessing. There is so much to be understood about that fear and anxiety, and such a delicate balance between staying aware of it and manifesting it.

The increased awareness that tools such as astrology can facilitate now brings to mind the question of fate versus free will. It allows us to understand and sometimes amplify our fears, especially those that manifest as recurrent patterns. My personal goal has been to be careful not to frame this as victimization, but rather in a way that underscores potentialities and tools for healing. I rest assured that my soul somehow had a say in the challenges I’d be facing in this life, and most of the time that’s helpful.

A few months ago, I kept coming across a thread on the interwebs that was spawned by a discussion between two astrologers. It appeared as if one was arguing that when ‘bad’ things keep happening to a person, it is an indication that they are less evolved. That’s a pretty rough paraphrase, but his comments sparked some pretty intense debate.

I found myself laughing at the audacity it takes to claim to understand someone else’s evolutionary path in hierarchical terms, even though I sometimes find myself referring to ‘consensus’ reality — the reality of those living in the normal 9-5 grind, watching prime time television, eating whatever the heck they want, never questioning the system, and happy (at least seemingly so) to play by the rules — in a way that evokes the same kind of divisions.

But the idea that those who struggle in their evolutionary journeys are somehow doing it wrong or less aware does not sit well with me. In fact, who am I to judge anyone’s path at all?

It seems that there is something inherently challenging and confrontational about the act of learning about one’s own astrological chart. Don’t we have to confront and trudge through our shadow material in order to learn to work with it? Isn’t that process at the root of astrological work, at least in some forms?

I’m reminded of a passage from Rudhyar’s Astrology and the Modern Psyche, which I have re-read now several times. In it, he discusses the ways in which in-depth examination of one’s own natal chart forces the potentialities of our individual paths to the surface, intensifying both the ‘good’ qualities as well as the ‘evil.’ He says:

“…as human beings are usually more struck by and respond more crucially to the ‘bad’ than to the ‘good,’ if a person strives after self-knowledge by studying his birth-chart with an intense belief in the validity of astrology, this study very often leads to an intensification of Karmic confrontations. This is as it should be; for this intensification of pain and tragedy through the focusing of Karma is an inevitable part of the process of purification and purgation (catharsis) of the ego. And this process is the first manifestation of the fact that the ‘education to personality’ is gaining momentum and becoming effective.”

This basic notion — that intense study of one’s chart increases the potentialities of the chart — also indicates that the ‘bad’ or ‘evil’ is particularly brought to the surface because we tend to be more comfortable with the good. Therefore the more harrowing, shadowy or perhaps just yucky stuff constellates in our psyches, finding room to express there and throughout our lives.

This passage in Rudhyar’s book is followed by a discussion of something Jung once wrote, which has to do with the fear that so many humans feel when trying to locate or listen to their inner voice. Jung gives credence to this fear by pointing out that the inner voice is something that can bring us in contact with the shadow. By guiding us towards our true calling or path, much in the way an astrological chart can, it also brings us in contact with our fears and our shadow.

Honoring that fear is part of the work. That’s why, whenever I meet someone who learns what I do and expresses interest in having a reading, I give them my contact information but I don’t push. I wait for them to reach out to me, indicating their readiness.

As much as I believe the survival of our species is dependent on people accessing and working with tools for consciousness such as astrology, I also know that at its most potent it can open windows to the soul that sometimes aren’t for the faint of heart. Although I suppose everything happens in the right time and place.

So while I’m grateful to be able to do some time traveling, I also hold the power of that spark of knowledge with lot of reverence because it isn’t a matter of fortune telling and parlor tricks for me — it’s a way of tuning into the soul and working with what is found there in a way that gets us in touch with that divine spark.

Reproductive Rights: More Than You Thought

Screen shot of just a small part of the Reproductive Choice comic on Robot-hugs.com, originally published at everydayfeminism.com.

Everyone knows about the pro-life/pro-choice debate; most people know there’s a fight to keep Planned Parenthood funded, against a flood of restrictive state laws and bills in recent years. But did you realize that “reproductive rights” also encompasses such things as limits based on ableism, racism, poverty, education, homophobia, transphobia, slut-shaming and medical assault?

Check out the full comic here, and broaden your view of the rights that deserve protecting (or need to be established in the first place) that go far beyond the usual categories.

Note: since this comic was designed to be part of a feminism campaign, it is obviously focused on women’s reproductive rights, including those of trans women. I’d like to hear from our male readers, too: are there any reproductive rights for you (especially if you are gay or trans) that are as marginalized or threatened? This may include adoption rights, etc.

Blessed Are The Peacemakers

By Judith Gayle | Political Waves

Jimmy Carter may not have been the most productive president of the last century, but I doubt that few took their responsibility more seriously or had more faith in the cause of democracy. Like Obama, he inherited a nation torn by final instability and marked by growing distrust of government.

275+Judith_Gayle

Running as an outsider and truth-teller, he remained both during his one-term presidency, which was likely his downfall. The American public preferred the manufactured optimism of Warner Bros. contract player, one-time union rep and former-Democrat, Ronald Reagan, who — despite all indicators — insisted it was “morning in America” (cue the extras and hit the Klieg lights!).

Jimmy is something of a futurist, a man of positive vision. Where would we be today, I wonder, if we had taken his advice, put on a sweater, turned down the thermostat and learned to conserve energy? His decision to put solar panels on the roof of the White House speaks volumes about his sense of stewardship of  the planet, as did Reagan’s decision to remove them.

Jimmy was green before it was fashionable, and Kermit had that right: it ain’t easy being green. There was something else Jimmy showcased, even when he took hits for it. James Earl Carter is a shining example of mid-20th century Christianity, at its best.

Carter’s announcement this week of melanoma metastasized to his brain is a death knell, not unexpected in a man of 90 years, but it still brings a lump to my throat and a stinging rush of tears. We need more like him in this world, not fewer.

Like the Pope, the Dalai Lama, and others who have practiced their faith to the point of certainty, Jimmy’s dedication to the advancement of humanity, delivered with characteristic and unshakable humility, defines him. He and Rosalynn have spent the majority of their lives in service to others.

When asked if he had regrets about his presidential performance, he had this to say:

“I wish I had sent one more helicopter to get the hostages, and we would have rescued them and I would’ve been re-elected. But that may have interfered with the foundation of the Carter Center. If I had to choose between four more years and the Carter Center, I think I would choose the Carter Center.”

The enormous good that Jimmy Carter has done for the world is, as the gentleman says, more important than his presidential legacy, and isn’t that what we’d expect of him? Truly, what he has accomplished globally would never have been allowed nationally, and that is one of those ah-ha! moments we need to acknowledge as we track this man’s career.

Presiding over one’s nation requires a competitive edge that precludes doing good across the board, and not much has changed since Jimmy was in office. As a CEO is obligated to profit, the American president is expected to play a zero-sum game like a champion going for the gold. The popularity of Donald Trump’s brutish brand of capitalism in place of statesmanship illustrates our continuing — and archaic — devotion to ‘exceptionalism.’

Fortunately, past presidents have the ability to move in broader circles, capture public attention for the greater good, and represent an international agenda. If they will. Some, like our Dubby, keep to themselves, but not Jimmy. He has decades of statesmanship to his credit.

Read about the Carter Center’s amazing work eradicating and controlling disease, and promoting civil rights at this link.

While you’re at it, juxtapose the Clinton Foundation’s admirable work in treating AIDS patients worldwide, while making no complaint against the outlandish cost of drug cocktails supplied by Big Pharma. Both foundations do good work, but only one is politically “connected,” as they say.

In a season when economics take center stage once again, with staggering levels of income inequality and government not trusted, Hillary may well come to envy the Carter Center’s track record and ethical standing.

I can’t say that the 39th President did everything right back in the days of Billy Beer, but I will pledge my oath that I always felt his heart was in the right place. I think the years since stand in testimony of that truth, and I hope he feels the love, in these last months of his life. Here’s a cartoon with the warm hug we wish him.

Jimmy is still an outsider, all these years later, hated on the right and avoided by many in his own party. Why? Open this link and admire the raw courage it takes for a former Commander-in-Chief to tell it like it is. A truth-teller in Washington, D.C. has few friends. But a peacemaker, a healer, a man willing to roll up his sleeves and win hearts and minds with sweat equity? He is beloved by millions.

In a press conference this week, Carter was calm and relaxed discussing his cancer, saying that he was “looking forward to a new adventure.” I can pretty much assure you he wasn’t talking about the four rounds of chemo ahead. In a nation terrified of death, Jimmy is, once again, modeling a faith and positivity that should instruct us all.

To the only U.S. president who did not wage war during his time in office, I send my thanks, my admiration, and my prayers that his coming adventure provides him reward for the love and compassion he extended to his fellow travelers here on Planet Terra. He’s one of the good ones. May all the kindness and mercy he set in motion gently lift him up and take him home.

(A word about last week: I’m again without a computer, tippy-tapping this on my tablet. Last Friday, I lost my piece at the last minute and I apologize to all you Saturday morning readers for the blank space where it should have been. I’ll do my best not to let that happen again!)

Planet Waves Weekly Horoscope, Aug. 20 – Aug. 27

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Your desire seems to be pulling you in two directions. The way it looks astrologically is that being passive is not working as well as it usually does. By this I mean you know you have to assert what you want, though you often end up just allowing things to happen; this in turn leaves you with people, things and circumstances that you don’t necessarily want. The other direction is newfound confidence in bold experimentation with desire. You have the moxie to go for what you want, by which I mean who and what you want. This involves taking various risks, such as rejection, or discovering that you don’t like what you discover. I suggest you allow a spirit of curious adventure to override all such concerns. Tempt yourself with what is possible. Allow yourself unfettered desire for exactly what interests you, be it someone or some creative endeavor. You will discover that this is a very different approach to life than hoping what you want notices you, or responds to your signals. Quit the Morse code and just plunge into the experiences that you want.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — The Sun’s ingress into Virgo is an invitation to explore your ideas, bringing your body along. You’re being called beyond the mental experiment, and into the journey that you take with your hands, your senses and your sense of adventure. Treat any hesitation that you may feel as an ankle-high fence that you could hop over with one leg if you wanted to. You may have the sensation that your emotional experience will not translate into a specific form of expression that you want. I would propose that the most significant use of your emotions is for motivation; feel your energy in motion and embark on a conscious experience. You will tend to believe what you tell yourself, so therefore use language that describes curiosity, desire and craving for truth that goes beyond some concept of what is supposedly true. Use discipline gently as a tool fully under your control; return to any activity daily if you want to make it part of your life. What you’re experiencing is not a temporary phase but rather an opportunity to reorder your priorities and access a deeper level of what some call talent.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — If the potential expressed by your ancestors was really the thing that limited you, you would have little to look forward to. Therefore, I suggest you use what your parents and grandparents accomplished as a baseline; as a kind of low-water mark that you were born to exceed. Much of what you know about their lives involves the struggle that they went through. You may have some feeling that in order to honor them, you have to honor that struggle, which may mean attempting to repeat it on some odd, unconscious level. Actually, their modest achievements are what has opened the way for your greater ones, including happiness that exceeds what they believed was possible. I would call your attention to an issue that is passed on from generation to generation: jealousy as a birthright. As twisted as it is, toxic, competitive envy is often handed off from parent to child as some kind of unalienable privilege. It’s nothing of the kind, and I suggest you replace it with the wholly positive response to what others do and what they have. Think of any good thing you see as the expression of your own potential, because that’s what it is.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Events this week may take you past a personal limitation you’ve felt, particularly one involving your privacy. Or rather, your perception of what is to be private and what is to be public. I would propose here that these are merely mental concepts, since eventually, everything is known. For you the question is: do you harness more energy by trying to seal up and sequester your personal truths, or by revealing them? Think of the region of your psyche that contains what you might conceal or reveal a battery, full of energy. You get to use that energy any way you want, though you can only tap into it if you’re real with yourself and with others. To put it in somewhat hokey (but no less true) New Agey terms, your truth is your power, and you get to use it any way you want. Any form of accessing one’s true power requires at least a moment of daring, as it well should. You’re now being invited to do just that. Remember, if you ever get stuck, opening up a little goes a long way — and opening up a lot can go even further.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — If you want to improve your financial situation, be more generous. This counts for yourself and with others, in that order. Your astrology bestows you with a natural obsession with money, which may manifest as anything from being hyper-cautious, to thrifty, to a spendthrift; none of these are really virtues. None of them reflects the deeper underlying nature of money, or of resources. You tend to over-think things, rather than allowing your ingenuity to work for you. It would help if you thought in larger, wider ways about your potential and about the amount of whatever you need being available to you. One thing that might help is noticing every time you encounter a thought of lack or scarcity. Ask yourself whether that’s really true, which may in turn lead you to ask yourself how you came to that conclusion. What facts support it, and which suggest that something else is possible? There is a belief that wealth is created by pinching pennies. Actually, it’s created by efficiency and the conscious use of resources. To this end, interesting ideas count for a lot. And so does letting things flow.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — The Sun is about to join Jupiter in your sign, ushering in what may be one of the best birthday seasons in years. Mercury, the Virgo planet, is also in your sign, and you have a lot going for you — this is not an illusion of some kind. Yet you may be feeling anxious or hesitant. This appears in your solar chart as some form of not knowing what you want; at the same time you may feel overly aggressive about wanting something you’re not sure you want. What they have in common is the way you manage desire, which is the most potent force in the human realm. As you may have noticed, very little can stop you or anything when you really, really want it — which is why many different philosophies try to define desire as a bad thing. Whether good or bad, desire exists, and you can think of it a little like voltage. Electricity must be managed carefully or it becomes a dangerous force of nature. But used with awareness and intention, it can be applied to nearly any need. Your desire is that strong, so be clear what you want and what you don’t want — and notice when others try to impose their will on you.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — You’re headed for a deeply meaningful personal encounter of some kind, though it’s different than you may be expecting. In case you’re inclined to worry that some facet of your public image is at stake, you can relax; what’s unfolding is much closer to the core of your self-perception and your inner life than anything that others would even care much about. But if you’re concerned what others might think, it would help if you made notes on your worst fears and best expectations, because those will provide you with a mind-map. Expectations and anxiety are more closely related than is obvious. We tend to think of hope, or expectation, as a good thing and anxiety as a bad thing. But they are part of the same concept, which is trying to manipulate the future in an uncreative way. That said, fear is a valuable teacher right now, because it describes a certain contour of your mind in which you have a tendency to get trapped. You may expect this to be a permanent feature of your inner landscape, though I assure you that’s not true. You really can work with this situation and work it out beautifully.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — If someone seems to be interfering with your success, or your forward momentum, look right at the situation. Others may have strong opinions, though that’s different from having power over you. It’s essential that you see this difference now, and really get the distinction. Otherwise you will invest way too much energy in the views of others, or what you perceive as their viewpoint, and ultimately prove yourself ‘right’. What I suggest is that you do what you want until someone tells you that you can’t. If you do, you might make the pleasant realization that nobody is going to stop you. This might even inform you that your concerns about what others think have no bearing in reality, and amount to little more than tying your own shoes together. You have a bold mission right now, and you don’t need collaborators. What you do need is to cooperate fully with yourself. You would benefit from applying some push energy to your goals and your surroundings. Once you do, you may wonder why you waited so long, and decide that asserting yourself with some mojo would be a fine way of life.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Your sign has the reputation of being the ‘big-picture thinker’, the one that can’t be bothered with the details. But the details matter, and you know they do. The fine points of what you’re doing are central to your success. Yet being a micromanager could be detrimental. So you need to know which details to focus on and which to leave to others, or not worry about. Take full charge of whatever requires your specific technical competence. Take responsibility, clear through to every stage of follow-up, about things that are specifically about your own ideas. For example, make sure you do the final edit on anything you write, prior to its being sent out. You also need to be the judge of the critiques of others. Be generous with the wastebasket on this one; only rarely are opinions worth much, so take a moment to extract a potentially valid point from everything and then discard the rest. The key to using your astrology the most effectively is being specific. Vague generalities are a liability now. So break everything down to steps, state the end-goal in concrete terms, and stick to your process.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — What would you do if you had a year to live? Most people would live very differently; for one thing, the endless squander of time would be the first thing put to a halt. Time would suddenly be seen as the precious resource that it is. For most people this is a scary thought, since it tends to remind them of two things — one being how much time is wasted, and the second being the uncertainty of the amount remaining. You would go a long way toward finding some real strength by admitting both of these things, and asking yourself what the logical conclusion is. So, give it a try — inquire within what you would do, and how you would live, if you had just one year. One thing I’d propose is that this will help you get your priorities in order. You will see the connection between your day-to-day way of life, and your longer-range goals that absolutely depend on the wise use of time, including what we humans might consider long spans of time. You have a real agenda for this life, and it will take some skill to make it happen. Let that begin with a moment of clarity.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You will benefit from some real cooperation, though this will come in the form of someone with specialized intelligence. Look around and pay attention, and don’t settle for anyone who seems to know less than they claim. The puzzle you seem to be facing is how to let go of certain responsibilities that weigh you down — yet doing so in a fully responsible way. This will take some ingenuity, and very likely from a viewpoint not colored by your emotional attachments. In other words, you need some applied intelligence, to a specific situation. One of my favorite lessons in A Course in Miracles is about recognizing the problem so that it can be solved. State whatever you’re trying to address in a way that can in fact be resolved, so you’re that many steps closer to actually having that happen. If a situation is resisting being worked out, I suggest you state it in a different way. Turn it backwards, upside down or inside out. Imagine what your life would be like were everything in perfect order. That vision will be truly informative. Really, stop and consider how things would be.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — The question that you want to call into focus repeatedly over the next few years is: what is true, and what is not? This includes variants such as, what is true for me, and what’s true for this other person? You may find yourself in various circumstances where there are different versions of the truth, or two main alternatives that seem unable to be reconciled. This is a trap, and you can sidestep it by staying awake. If you’re tending toward a more complicated version of events or possibilities, experiment with simplifying things. Notice where the complication enters the scenario, and see if you can get an understanding of that influence. Try to break things down to their very most basic elements. You’re entering a phase of your life where your success depends on your clarity. Yet clarity will require an ongoing process of observation and assessment. Look, listen and feel. Always trust yourself above and beyond the trust you put into others, since you have the power to be the most dependable person in your life. As long as you stay awake and aware, nothing is beyond the power of your own intelligence.

Deborah Taj Anapol: 1951-2015

Deborah Taj Anapol, doing her thing somewhere tropical — probably Hawaii.

I am saddened to report the death of Deborah Taj Anapol, who died in her sleep while visiting friends in England overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. The circumstances of her transition were reported by her host, who said that Taj showed them a video about orgasmic death before going to bed. She then went upstairs to her room and did not awaken.

Deborah, teaching sometime, somewhere.

Taj was the author of a number of books and is considered one of the founders of the American polyamory movement — that is, consensual nonmonogamy. Her most famous book was Love Without Limits.

I first met Taj when I invited her to be a guest on my radio program on Radio Woodstock in 1996. She then invited me to be the keynote speaker at her Celebration of Sacred Sexuality in Harbin, California a few weeks later. You can read a memoir of that here.

I would not say we were close, but more like mutual admirers. I did her chart from time to time, which gave us an additional bond. Unfortunately her birth data eludes me at the moment; if you happen to have it, please send it to me. She was indeed a Scorpio, so she got the connection between life, sex and death — as demonstrated in her gesture of showing that video. I like to think that she went to bed and masturbated herself to an ecstatic exit from the physical plane.

Taj was a trained and licensed psychologist (in California — an accomplishment), so she introduced a dimension of reason and of understanding to the discussion of polyamory — and she gave it credibility. That was mainly due to her well thought out ideas and her clear, even speaking style. She was a bit like Julian Bond that way, in that she was a radical who spoke with the voice of reason.

Deborah hard at work.

Taj had a gift for holding open a space of erotic freedom. Her work is evidence of what is possible when moralism, judgment and false inhibition are checked at the door. She loved life in every way she could, but was not a giddy person. She did not give the impression that she was hanging all that loose — she was often serious and intense and highly focused.

But the purpose of that clarity, that carefully woven integrity, that keeping to the schedule and everyone knowing their job and doing it well, was to hold open a space where others could experience some freedom to move around.

Unlike today’s sexuality and polyamory movements, Deborah’s scene was never laced with political correctness, anti-maleness or strict rules except your basic notion of consent between adults.

Deb loved men, she loved the women that surrounded her, she loved sex, she loved to teach and she commanded respect. She certainly commanded my highest and deepest respect for what she said and for the space she could hold open. And she was a fantastic radio guest. It was always fun to talk to her and to read her astrology, and I’ll miss her dearly.

Lovingly,
