Parallels and Perspective
It can be overwhelming to live in historically significant times. There is no blame in being overwhelmed, but there are consequences. To see the consequences of being overcome by profound changes in environment or condition, you need only look back a century or so.
The scale of events experienced by those living through the first world war was unprecedented. It was enough to result in an entire generation being declared “lost.”
World War I was said to be “the war to end all wars.” Yet, the sense of nationalism which resulted shaped those who survived the experience so as to make that description immediately moot.
Then came a great depression and second world war. The result was a generation now often referred to as “the greatest.” Yet, those whose plausible greatness was shaped by widespread hardship also became inured to it. The outcome was a partisan world where material prosperity took precedence, and “peace” became a dirty word.
Beginning with those who reached maturity during the 1960s came an accelerating rate of change to match the scale experienced by their elders. The upshot was a continuous medium of rapidly cycling obsolescence in parallel with overpopulation, which overtaxed the Earth itself as well as all of those living on it.
In this century, the proverbial chickens of the previous hundred years have come to roost. Right now, at this moment, political leaders who have come together to ostensibly work out a solution to global environmental crisis are simultaneously and unavoidably being confronted by military conflict, partisan intransigence and economic inadequacy.
At the same time, you may well be struggling to make your personal financial ends meet without the price being a physical or mental breakdown. That’s how it would be unfair to blame you or anybody for being overwhelmed. It is not easy to live on Earth at this time.
Yet, paradoxically, it is potentially more empowering to live now than ever before because you have perspectives not available to your parents or grandparents. As a result, it’s possible to see both parallels and alternatives not visible to those who preceded you.
Interestingly, and almost ironically, one of the best sources of perspective for this moment in time can be found in the ancient art of astrology. It all started around 2008 when Pluto transitioned into Capricorn for the first time in more than two centuries. Then something amazing happened.
About two years after Pluto entered Capricorn, Uranus began making its way into Aries for the first time since the period between WW I and WW II. Then, during the next year or so, Chiron returned to Pisces for the first time since the 1960s, and for the first time since we became aware of its existence. Finally, Neptune came home to Pisces for only the second time since it was discovered in the middle of the 19th century.
Think of it. Pluto has a orbital period of nearly two and a half centuries. Neptune takes more than a century and a half to go around the zodiac. Chiron requires more than 50 years to make a circuit of all 12 signs, and the 84 years or so it requires Uranus to orbit the Sun represents a relatively long human lifetime. Yet, in less than a handful of years they all changed sign.
That did not happen for your parents. Nor during the lifetime of your grandparents, or even your great grandparents. To have the planets that represent meaningful epochs and eras in human history all change sign at essentially the same time has not happened in a long time. The fact that it happened for you indicates that you are special and different. It implies that you have it in your hands to shape, rather than just be shaped by, the times you are living in.
Throw in the interpersonal planets, Saturn and Jupiter, which correspond to the longer cycles within the span of a human life. The dozen years or so it takes Jupiter to move through a dozen signs often correlates with big changes. The nearly 30 years Saturn requires to complete an orbit usually corresponds to those changes adding up to form a new order, form and structure in your life.
Saturn entered Libra shortly after Pluto moved into Capricorn and just before Uranus made its ingress to Aries. The result was a T-shaped configuration on the zodiac that correlated with world events in parallel with your own life as never before. The continuous series of seven square aspects (separations of 90 degrees) between Uranus and Pluto in the years that followed served to repeatedly drive home the same point that the personal and political are inseparable.

Jupiter entered Aries to conjoin with Uranus way back in 2010, and is now in Virgo — essentially opposing Neptune and Chiron while all three are more or less at right angles to Saturn’s position in Sagittarius now.
The result is another T-square, a mutable one symbolizing how it is now nationalism and partisan distinctions that have become obsolete. The mutable quality of Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces symbolizes everybody together on the brink of change, and gives everyone living now unprecedented power in numbers — if only we can see past those outmoded means of separation.
In other words, as easy as it is to feel overwhelmed, it is now you who can participate in doing the overwhelming. For if overwhelming numbers refuse to wage war, there will be no war. If the overwhelming sentiment is to support the wellbeing of our planet, Earth can still conceivably return the favor. With perspective that extends beyond our time and an understanding of how one person’s fate now parallels that of every other, you need not simply become a product of this era of our history. Rather, the epoch of human history we are now clearly entering can and should be co-conceived and co-created by you.
If that prospect seems overwhelming, break it down into what you can do on your scale and at your pace. It will be enough to know when to say “no” to political leaders so that they will know to follow your lead. It will be a good start if you can figure out a way to say “yes” to the vast majority of people who are just like you.

The Elephants are Dancing
More than 100 leaders are meeting right now to haggle over the details of a response to global warming that will not stem what is already happening: rising ocean temperatures are melting polar ice caps, increasing sea levels and changing global weather patterns.

This temperature rise is the cause of drought, famine, deadly storms, the drowning of small island nations and, in the case of Syria, may be the root cause of a deadly civil war initiated by internal struggles over water usage due to a savage drought. This war has ultimately led to a mass migration of 4.3 million Syrian refugees to countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas, creating immense economic and social pressure on all nations involved.
Yet, because of global warming, there will be more migrations to come. This is not an “if” or a “maybe” but a “when.”
We know current global economic interests cling to an energy infrastructure that world economic powers are loathe to dismantle. There is the elephant in the room: the achingly slow-moving train of the largest polluters — the US and China — to do something, anything, significant to change significantly or at least modify our energy consumption and production.
Any meaningful change is too far away on the horizon to stop what is happening to us right now on the ground. Not with a Congress in the pockets of oil and coal money, and a Supreme Court that made political money from corporations a form of free speech protected by the Constitution.
If this all seems to indicate the planet is in trouble, it is. And yet, people on the ground are rising up. Sunday, the day the Saturn-Neptune square was exact, more than half a million people worldwide participated in demonstrations in advance of the COP 21 Paris Climate Summit. The BBC reports that over 200 climate change protesters were arrested in Paris yesterday. Simultaneous protests occurred yesterday as well in Brazil, Colombia, Australia, the US, the UK, Chile, Kenya, the Marshall Islands and Australia. It was a global alarm clock waking us from our political slumber.
Given the results of the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009, I am far from hopeful that the COP 21 will be successful in stemming the political and actual tide in 2015. But perhaps the urgency of the matter is even more in the face of these global leaders, who are attending the talks in Paris just two weeks after an alleged IS attack on the city itself — and with the ongoing global humanitarian crisis facing millions of Syrian refugees still humming loudly in world news.
A global commitment to making change, even a half-hearted one, may be better than none at all. It’s just that the price seems to be going up with each passing day as we delay and compromise. Will we see real commitment for tangible results? There are many challenges and opportunities that face these leaders, specifically from the US, UK, China and Japan — the world’s biggest consumers and polluters. Will they see the big picture at all?

In the title of her book When the Elephants Dance, Tess Uriza Holthe describes the struggle of Filipinos to survive while the US and Japan fought World War II in the Philippines. The big powers — the elephants — fight while the rest of us — the chickens underfoot — run so as to not be crushed.
It’s the same today. The big polluters are the elephants who are dancing while we chickens on the ground tremble in their wake, hoping, praying, protesting and fighting against the wheel that could crush us all.
But it will take that to prevent what seems to be the inevitable from happening; a mighty push from the ground below, as well as a change in the consciousness of those in the grand meeting rooms of the Paris summit. It already has happened and we must all act to prevent it from getting worse.
All our eyes are watching Paris this week and our arms are raised, ready. Even us chickens on the ground can get enough wing speed to rise up and fly. The time to do it was yesterday, but right now will do too.
Monday Tarot Reading — Monday, Nov. 30, 2015
By Sarah Taylor
There is only one choice.
You may have sat there like our protagonist in the Eight of Swords, with your head in your hands, at a loss as to what to do. Feeling lost; not-quite-here; an outline in a garish landscape that has, of late, started to seem more grotesque than gorgeous.

Knight of Swords, Eight of Swords, Nine of Wands from The Röhrig Tarot deck, created by Carl-W. Röhrig. Click on the image for a larger version.
Why? Because there are two paths in front of you, and you haven’t had a damn clue which one you’re meant to take.
Actually, it’s a little more complex than that: it’s not as if you’ve had two clear-cut choices and a list of pros and cons for each. Nope. You’ve had an overpowering sense of not being able to step back enough to see anything much at all on this particular issue. You’ve struggled to edge out from under it to get the kind of perspective that enables you to make a decision because you just know it’s the right one for you — and then act on it.
But here is an answer in the form of these three cards that are clearly in front of you.
There is only one choice.
There is only one path. There is only one Sun. This is the path you walk, this is the light by which you navigate. It may look like it’s ‘out there’ but, traveller, it is ‘in here’.
It is the Knight of Swords when he’s at his very best and not screwing around with his cunning, or manipulating behind-the-scenes for his own ends, or unleashing his inner hell cat. When the Knight of Swords grows up and starts to take responsibility for his own shadow, then what is unleashed is a bolt of energy — the energy that was being used to hold that shadow at bay.
When unfettered by the kind of blindness that needs to exist in order not to see a particularly sharp-edged truth, he can then direct that same truth-detecting ability to the matter at hand. Your inner Knight has the ability to knock the obstacles clear out the way that were blocking you from seeing clearly. He has the ability to channel and focus wisdom.
There is only one choice.
Maybe you’ve been caught between two options. Maybe what seemed like two options turned out to be one perfect whole. Maybe there never was another option. Soon, I have a feeling from these cards, you’ll not only get what you need in this regard — something in you also has the potential to feel more vibrant, more present.

What has been making you feel incomplete is the distance you’ve been experiencing from your own truth as the small figure in the Eight of Swords.
It’s part of a dance with your inner sage, your Higher Self — a dance that involves contacting with it, spinning away, sometimes needing to walk in faith when the distance feels too far to know its presence, sometimes losing faith entirely, and then re-contacting in a moment of supernova brightness that changes the landscape.
And let’s talk about that landscape. In one way, you’ve been here before. In another, you haven’t. Yes, you’ve felt that disconnect and disorientation but, today, the story may not be the same. Don’t rely on past experiences to guide your decision-making.
The guide you need is your inner sight — your insight; the Knight of Swords. He will act as a magnifier for that frequently soft, oft-unheard, always-right knowing that sits at the heart of you. When he appears, you’ll know him because while he is canny and powerful, he isn’t simply about the kind of understanding you reach with your mind. This understanding will have a felt-sense to it. It will be anchored somewhere deep. You will not be moved. This won’t be stubbornness, but certainty. No justifications needed. No apologies required.
The truth, when connected to who you really are and your unique path, has its own rules.

Time for a New Meme du Moment
From Friday’s shooting at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado, to the ISIS attacks two weeks in Paris, to France’s bombing of Syria, to rampant backlash against Syrian refugees, to divisive politicians, it seems our world is awash in fear and violence. We want so badly to see the big, humanitarian picture right now (and many people devoted to it still do); yet if we look out at the world via news reports, we meet a mirror full of chaos and pain that looks like it can never be healed. Don’t believe it.

“We are Mainers who welcome Syrian (and all) refugees here. Do you?” This sign appeared in my neighborhood the week before last, and has been filled with signatures. Photo by Amanda Painter.
I don’t mean to say that we’ll see the eradication of pain and violence in our lifetimes. What I mean is that what Eric described in an email as the “meme du moment” — i.e., “be afraid of getting blown up” — is an illusion.
One that has the Saturn-Neptune square behind it (now separating but still nearly exact). Every astrological aspect can have a positive expression; but part of what helps us to distinguish positive expression from an aspect’s shadow side is that, yes, sometimes that shadow comes through strongly.
So here we are, with the Sagittarius Sun having come through the Saturn-Neptune square earlier on Sunday. If you’ve had any contact with the media (including social media), you’re aware that the collective psychological climate right now is dominated by fear (Saturn in shadow form) and delusion (Neptune in its lower expression): fear of being bombed or shot; the delusion that shooting or bombing someone will solve the problem of your fear.
Yet there is much productive, creative work to be done, and being engaged in such endeavors is, I think, one antidote to the fear and delusion. It’s not necessarily an escape (though it can be); rather, I mean that any time you engage in creative, productive actions, I think you act to neutralize fear and delusion.
Live the Questions Now
I’ve been swimming in a very Piscean existence as of late — the happy, euphoric version of Pisces I so adore. I’ve been joking that I’m in an extended phase of undiagnosable, totally maintainable and functional mania.
I scheduled a session with my therapist this past week just to check in, as I’ve been aware that I’m not really processing or thinking about things, and am clear that there are some sharks underneath the surface. Not to say I need to be digging and analyzing all the time.
I’m also aware, however, how much of my chart is being Neptunized at the moment and that many of my beliefs are in a dissolution process. I wanted to kind of force myself to take some space to look a little deeper.
In short, the transiting nodal axis is rubbing up against my Venus-Saturn-Neptune T-square, while transiting Neptune opposes my Mars-Jupiter conjunction. My progressed Moon is in balsamic phase in Pisces, also opposing that Mars-Jupiter.
Much of what has been coming up for me has been constellating a lot of what I refer to as the Priestess Complex. Through interactions with a variety of lovers lately, I’ve been seeing the complex from new angles. I’ve been recognizing how much I’ve re-written some of those scripts and how far I’ve come in many ways.
I’ve also realized how many scripts are in complete flux, and how strongly one or two of the more painful core ideas and beliefs about who I am in love and relationship are still lingering. I’ve been observing all of these things, feeling like now is not a time for deep diving into them, but for gathering information — and for enjoying the wonders of my 8th house Pisces Venus, who really enjoys the sacredly sexual components of my existence.
Thanksgiving morning, I plunged into an old script. I received a text from a lover I parted ways with a while back. Our parting was my choice and it was one of the most painful experiences of my life. It was a big relationship, although relatively short. We have had some contact since then, but not much. I’ve had to do the boundaries and discernment thing a lot.
The text basically just wished me well and sent love and hugs. He also, however, told me that he was in a better place emotionally than he has been in decades and that he is grateful for the role I played in getting him there.
Two of my past scripts read something along the lines of: Men come in and project all of their darkest stuff onto me, and then leave it there and move on, and they come, get healing, and then go have relationships. I read his text, and although I knew his sentiment was one of loving gratitude, it triggered the heck out of me, feeling more like a punch to the stomach. Or the heart.
Figuring out how to be discerning in romantic relationships is the Saturn part of my natal T-Square, and it’s come to my attention that I really do have to discern between romantic connections versus the connections that should probably take place in a therapeutic space. Being discerning once the Neptunian energy has taken off has been damn near impossible for me in the past — I get tapped into the possibility of transcendent love, and can see through to the core of who I think someone is, flaws and all.
The sensual and sexual components of the energy that can exist between my lovers and myself feels so good that I have tended to figure: why not just enjoy it? Deeper than that, however, my open and accepting heart is one of my favorite parts of being me. Shutting that down in any way has tended to make me sad.
I’ve gotten so much better at discernment, but reading that text put me back in some old head-space. I also tapped into how visceral a complex can be — I know those scripts to be true because they play out! All the time! Even with heaps of awareness and growth! How does one move on from that? Or, perhaps more accurately stated: how does one continue to move into relationship ‘knowing’ the outcome?
I really dislike even typing those things out — too vulnerable, too easily misread or misinterpreted in their oversimplified form, too painful to put in writing. But alas, the juice in my writing process this week lies with the personal.

I did try to move away from the personal while writing, and so I went to see what’s been posted recently on the Planet Waves website. I was struck by the beauty of pieces written by Judith and Len in the past few days.
The writers on this website often blow my mind. There was something in the tone of both of those pieces, however, that seemed to encompass the energy of the Saturn-Neptune square quite perfectly.
Judith’s self-described interest in and reporting about “watching our mythologies break-down,” and Len’s incredible weave of the historical context of the Saturn-Neptune square with the suggestion that the tension of the square can be playing out within each of us, seemed like perfect embodiments of the energy of the square. Something in the energy behind the words felt huge and loving and understanding and entirely nebulous, and yet fully contained and consciously purposeful at the same time.
Once again, I return to the importance of finding containers that can hold whatever it is we’re going through in this oh-so-strange-and-surreal era we live in. Planet Waves is such a container, but it can take many other forms. For me, post-text, it was letting myself cry like I haven’t in months and then spending time with family of choice, followed by some time in the light-heartedly delicious container of a lover’s arms, staying as present as possible through all of it.
I remember that the now-ended relationship really was the first one in my life where I felt held as a complete person, by someone other than myself. The relationship provided an incredible container for rapid and extreme transformation for both of us, even though neither of us could handle the resulting intensity and it did not end well.
I don’t know where all of this will lead. By ‘this’ I mean the crazy world we live in and all of its goings-on. I am consistently shocked at the relevance the astrological paradigm holds when looking at events both collective and personal.
In retrospect, I realize now that the timing of the text that triggered such an unanticipated response coincided with the exact Saturn-Neptune square, almost to the minute — a square that is in exact alignment with Jupiter in my chart. It’s as if the universe gave me a little dunk into the emotional portions of my old scripts just as it is giving me the opportunity to revise them — and to believe and have faith that maybe my experiences in relationship can change, and that the scripts are being rewritten.
Sometimes looking at my love life in that way warrants the same response I often have when looking at the world stage: we just keep making the same mistakes over and over again. But then I get a little tickle of hope and do what I can to actively work to make that hoped-for scenario a reality, even when I don’t understand the undercurrents. It can be a confusing slog, but that’s what Saturn is there for, right? To hone the dream, find out what aspects are worth striving for, stick with it through confusion and doubt, and bring it into reality.
I’m reminded of one of my favorite quotes by Rilke, which I’ll leave you with now:
I want to beg you, as much as I can, to be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
