Two-Stage Solstice

Sunday, June 21, is the longest day of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere. As such, the Sun ingressed the sign Cancer at 12:38 pm (16:38 UTC) EDT Sunday. The Moon then ingressed Virgo a few minutes later.

This is an interesting, even spectacular chart, and much in the planetary landscape has changed the past week or so. Saturn has retrograded back for its Scorpio encore. Venus and Jupiter are making a glorious visible conjunction in the sky (check it out).

And the recent Mercury retrograde is finally wriggling itself out of the mental and emotional bog. You have half a chance to gain some clarity this week, at long last.

There is more astrology yet to come. As mentioned, Mars remains in Gemini, where it’s been since May 11 (well before Mercury retrograde began).

It’s now fewer than two degrees away from Cancer, which means it’s both making a sign change and a square to the Aries Point; Mars arrives there Tuesday. So this solstice will occur in two stages — today’s Ingress of the Sun into a new sign, a new quadrant and an aspect to the Aries Point; and then Mars doing the same thing in less than two days.

When Mars makes its move, the Mercury-Neptune square is also exact, and begins to separate. That, too, will come with a surge of energy and the sensation of slipping out of something, waking up or some drug wearing off — one you didn’t know you took.

Cancer Solstice Chart as a Solar Return — Cancer Birthday Summary

Dear Cancer Reader:

I thought I would offer a few ideas on the Cancer chart as a solar return chart — that is, as an indicator of your upcoming four seasons (actually more, because this chart points far into the future).

The first image that emerges is that of Mars in late Gemini when the Sun has ingressed Cancer. That places Mars in the 12th house, where it can represent fear, hesitancy or the question of where your drive and determination went. There’s no shortage of energy in your chart. To the contrary, you have an abundance of it, but Mars in the 12th can reveal the question of connecting with your drive.

Here’s the thing. Mars is hanging out at 28+ Gemini — a very strange degree of the zodiac. It shows up in many historic charts.

There’s a fixed star there (an actual star, rather than a planet) and that fixed star is associated with things going well. We see it in news charts as bad things that went well. You can apply this factor yourself.

To do so, you will need to do two things. One is consciously connect with your ambition. The other is to connect with your fear, which could be anxiety or hesitation or even, in the rare moment, panic. Your chart illustrates fear as energy, which you can then re-apply and use in a creative way.

Ok, that covers thing one. Thing two involves Aries, your solar 10th house. That’s the house of achievement, and of reputation. It’s the most extraverted house, because to use this house you must take a chance and assert your leadership and your authority in some way.

There are two stories developing here. One is that Vesta has recently entered Aries, where it’s going to be for a while due to a retrograde, which spans from Aug. 12 through Nov. 13. Vesta finally leaves Aries in March 2016. This is a VERY long time for an asteroid to be in such a prominent house, and the message of this placement is obsession with service. In a phrase, that is your key to success. You must do what you do to do it, and make sure that it serves who it can serve.

There is another story in your 10th — an even more momentous conjunction between Uranus and Eris. These two planets in Aries are an old story, but their joining forces is a new one. The message is that you’re poised to contribute something revolutionary to the world over the next few years, if you focus your energy and are brave and determined. This is a conjunction that will shape the world and describe changes in society to rival the Uranus-Pluto squire that we’ve been living through. For you this is about being boldly who you are, with no hesitation — inventing yourself as you go.

Thing three is the Moon. The Moon is the body associated with your sign, and at the moment of the solstice we find it in the very last degree of Leo — in my opinion one of the most interesting degrees of the zodiac.

The message here is that you will be revealing yourself in some bold way. Secrecy, privacy, concealment; these things are not your friends.

You are the most free where you can be the most open, and that is where you will succeed. Where you must conceal yourself, take notice that there may be something toxic in the environment.

The Moon is square Saturn, now in the last degree of Scorpio. That again points to the theme of secrecy and why it’s such a menace. In this aspect, concealing oneself is described as the very essence of what causes stuckness. You’re likely to be fully engaged with this issue, and in a sense, called upon to draw on the strength of radical honesty. As you do so, keep your sense of humor, and remember, the ‘scary’ thing about this is the reminder to everyone else, so obsessed with concealing themselves, that someone else has the guts to do something different.

One last bit — Pluto in your opposite sign Capricorn. Pluto is now at the midpoint of its trip across your relationship house. This is calling for a review, and a reorientation. Your ideas about traditional relationships are falling away even as you recognize the strength and power inherent in building new, living, relevant traditions. These are based your actual values rather than what others in the past imposed on you.

If you are fueled and inspired by anything, it’s the beauty and radiance of what actually motivates you, at your core. You have many, many gifts to offer the world and by all indications, you are about to get many chances to do so. The catch is that you must reveal yourself as human at every turn. Lead with your vulnerability. Experience your fear and let it be burned off by your own creativity.

I’ll be elaborating on these points and many others in my Cancer birthday reading.

Dear Friend and Reader:

As the northern solstice approaches and the Sun comes to an apparent halt along the horizon, the planets are making many moves. Among them is Mercury in Gemini pushing into a 90-degree meeting (a square) with Neptune in Pisces, exact Tuesday.

This is part of the current retrograde cycle that is still working itself out. It’s the third of three Mercury-Neptune squares associated with the recent Mercury retrograde.

Mercury square Neptune illustrates the question of what is true and what is not. Both planets are strong in their signs, with Mercury in Gemini (classical ruler) and Neptune in Pisces (modern ruler). Neither has an advantage over the other; seen one way, the square is a kind of stalemate. And that is how it is with truth and lies in our society.

This third and final contact of the square also describes some kind of resolution or gaining of clarity. It could represent gaining sufficient information to make a decision. It is, in any event, a turning point in whatever this extended Mercury retrograde phase has represented for you, and in particular anything involving the square.

Gemini New Moon, Looking into the Galactic Core

In recent weeks most attention has been focused on early Gemini, as Mercury stationed direct there several days ago. You may still be noticing the retrograde effect — for some, it’s more palpable in the days and weeks after the retrograde ends.

Now late Gemini is the focus. Tuesday the Moon and Sun form a conjunction there, also called the New Moon. Under some circumstances the New Moon has a quiet intensity or none at all, though the current aspect pattern describes many situations that are on the move.

On Sunday, Mars and the Sun formed a conjunction or exact alignment with the Earth, and with Mars moving at close to the speed of the Sun, they will be aligned for a while, including during Tuesday’s New Moon. So really this is a triple conjunction, with plenty of energy behind it.

Part of that energy is coming from across the sky in Sagittarius. The Moon, Sun and Mars are opposite the Galactic Core — that is, the supermassive black hole that binds together the Milky Way, where we live. This can feel like an invisible wave rising, and describe some event that has a wide and sweeping influence.

I think of the GC as having a spiritualizing effect, serving as a kind of homing signal and connection to a very wide perspective not normally available while staring at a row of buildings or gas pumps. The GC whispers that we are part of something larger, and again larger than that.

Mercury Turnaround: The Pisces Factor

Mercury stations direct at 6:33 pm EDT this Thursday, June 11. It’s been retrograde in Gemini since May 18. I’m again hearing from some readers and people who speak to me spontaneously that this was the most difficult Mercury retrograde they’ve experienced, though not nearly as frequently as with the prior one in Aquarius.

The current retrograde is in Gemini, though really the most salient factor is the involvement of planets in Pisces — centaur Nessus, Neptune and centaur Chiron. Neptune in particular adds the factor of events below the level of normal perception. With Neptune one can proceed on a current of thought not fully connected to awareness and drift in some unusual directions, then awaken as if from a too-long nap on a hot day.

Get the Message: Sagittarius Full Moon

There’s an excellent old song by Bob Dylan called “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.” The song is a take on that cosmic joke of being in the right place at the wrong time.

Double rainbow over uptown Kingston, NY.

Double rainbow over uptown Kingston, NY.

For example, finally getting the chance to do something, but then it’s no longer appropriate for you. You get the news you need, the day after you needed it.

Or you finally get the attention you want, but you can’t relate to people that way anymore. It’s an exuberant song, really, and I’ve included a link to one of the best versions in the player above. (The backing band is The Grateful Dead and this was recorded in 1987.)

This week’s Sagittarius Full Moon reminds me a little of that song. There’s a blend of optimism in Sagittarius style, idealism in Neptune style, and confusion or being pulled in two directions by Mercury and Mars in Gemini.

You just might find yourself in the very best place a little late, such as arriving after the party. The thing is, you still have time to get the message, to get yourself to the right place at the right time.

Special Update: Virgo Moon + Mercury, Mars, Neptune

I’ve written and recorded plenty the past few weeks on the Mercury-Mars-Neptune configuration. That is now at its peak, and to make things more intriguing, the Virgo Moon is in the mix right now — passing right through the degrees of Virgo that align with Mercury, Mars and Neptune.

Note that the Virgo Moon has a bond to Mercury (Virgo is one of its signs) so the current aspect has extra relevance and seeming reality.

What the Moon adds is a body-level experience; a direct sensory level of contact; and in Virgo, something that will filter through to the mental level as any number of emotions or cognitive patterns. Some will seem new; others will seem to be preexisting, perhaps from the distant past, such as childhood or familial relationships. Some may seem to be products of the immediate environment.

Whatever the case, this astrology is indeed happening and it will come to one peak over the next few hours. Other peaks will happen during the week, and in one form or another this astrology will last well into Friday, as the Mercury-Mars-Neptune pattern loosens up.

Cooling Martian Heat with Compassion

By Amy Elliott

I stand for honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you want to be treated and helping those in need. To me, those are traditional values. — Ellen DeGeneres

If you’ve been watching the international news this past week, you saw the values DeGeneres speaks of in action as Irish voters chose to affirm the rights of same-sex couples to marry (becoming the first nation to do so by popular vote).

For some, this is surprising given how steeped in Catholicism Ireland is; you might be wondering if you can trust this victory in human rights to hold, given how embattled both sides of the issue have been — and given that Mercury is retrograde.

In fact, with Mercury in a square aspect to Neptune in Pisces (exact Friday), you might feel as if you are in a dream, wondering if you really just saw what you think you saw in Irish politics.

Yet there are times in our imperfect human dealings when Neptune’s higher octave of universal love and compassion manages to filter through and take substantive form. This looks like one of those moments, one that heralds a deeper cultural shift long in the works.

That said, Mercury and Neptune can both be a little tricksy, in their own way — especially in our mundane social dealings. It might be said that Mercury can represent the willful deceiver, and Neptune the willfully deceived. These two slippery fishes will come into focus early Wednesday, when retrograde Mercury conjoins Mars in Gemini (exact at 6:37 am EDT / 10:37 UTC).
