The Long View: Saturn Conjunct Pluto, Square Eris

Dear Friend and Reader:

Last night as Hurricane Michael was roaring through the Florida panhandle, making landfall as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds, Donald Trump was holding a pep rally in Erie, PA. At that rally, as the stock market lost 800 points in a tech selloff, Trump was leading the crowd in a chant of, “Lock her up!”

oct11-2018

Mr. Friendly — Trump campaigns in Erie, PA, on Wednesday night as Hurricane Michael pounded Florida. Photo by Evan Vucci.

Then he revved the crowd by calling Democrats “an angry, left-wing mob” who he said is unfit to govern. He is, of course, campaigning for the midterm elections less than one month away. Don’t be surprised if there is no blue wave, and if one of these days this year or next, Robert Mueller, the special counsel, passes a confidential report to a Republican Congress.

Is it obvious what’s happening? People are angry — or many people, anyway. Strange, given that we’re told that the unemployment rate is the lowest since 1969. Oh wait, that’s irrelevant. Real wages are stagnant, and the cost of living is higher than ever.

The economy is going beautifully for the 1%. There is real economic frustration coming from the background in that most people cannot call the United States the land of opportunity.

But there’s something deeper going on. Trump is harvesting frustration rooted on an existential level, and he’s using it to whip up authoritarian impulses in people. Frustration and pain are commodities, for those who know how to harvest them. He would not succeed at doing this if people felt better, if they had satisfying relationships and reasons to feel good to be alive. We live in cranky times of virtual sex and virtual food and virtual friends and virtual assistants and virtual trips to Italy or wherever.

Things are going pretty well for most people (who have food and shelter and flush toilets today — often much more), but it seems there is always something to complain about. There’s always someone to complain about, that is, someone less pure, less American, less worthy, less whatever.

Venus Retrograde, Square Mars

Venus is retrograde, and Venus and Mars are in a tense and aggressive square aspect. I say aggressive because the introspection and the emotional contact and healing called for on the Venus-retrograde-in-Scorpio side of the equation so rarely happens. It is, instead, often projected outward as rage on the Mars-in-Aquarius side of the equation (remember the connection of the internet to Aquarius).

The less that inner life is respected and honored and treated as something deserving of healing and attention, the angrier Mars in Aquarius will seem. Yet we live in times when there is an increasingly vapid notion of what interior reality is.

Planet Waves
But is it art? NO! Photo by Devin Yalkin, for a New York Times article on how to take better Instagram photos of your food.

The digital revolution has turned society and most individuals inside out. Think of how many people cannot enjoy a meal until they’ve sent a picture of it out on Instagram (called “gramming your food”). You could easily come up with a hundred examples of this in a few minutes.

Private inner space is fragile even when it’s supported. Digital consciousness bursts it outward, which is another way of saying bursting us out of body.

And in a similar way, inner tension and frustration is easily projected outward when the intensity gets to be too much to bear.

This is not just about the devices you use, though like any habitual activity, relating to these drug-like objects must be moderated. When it’s not, it represents some failure — I don’t use that word lightly — to be with our circumstances and the people around us.

Each is a lost opportunity to address what is concerning or ailing us, what needs love and attention, or what might bring the pleasure of true human contact. And much of what people are struggling with includes the constant dragging around of, and being ruled by, ancestral matters: the problems, the fears, the resentment, the shame, the animosity, of our forebears.

Virtual existence is a dangerous form of being out of body, which results in being disoriented on the physical plane. When people lack an inner frame of reference, they are easy to manipulate, particularly on a mass level. Humans have a tendency to attempt to find themselves through conflict and aggression. It’s more readily available than art, love, nature or sex, all of which you have to work for if you want them to be worth anything.

Venus and Mars: Preparation for the Future

My take on the Venus and Mars retrogrades of 2018 is that they are preparation for the deeper, longterm transits that are coming: Uranus in Taurus, Chiron in Aries, and the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Capricorn, which by all indications is “the big one.”

Planet Waves
Photo of unidentified family. Family is considered a pillar of society and is an ‘institution’ closely related to Capricorn.

Venus and Mars are revealing of personal tendencies, dynamics of sex and gender, and emotional needs and wants. These retrogrades are a shakeup, revealing the feelings and emotions behind the smug, self-satisfied air that many people project these days.

Capricorn is one of a few signs distinctly associated with history, and the establishments of family, government, corporations and related elements of society: the pillars of what we think of as worldly existence, passed down to us from antiquity, and taken for granted.

At the center of this is family, the microcosm that precedes all macrocosms. Think of family as the miniature government, which is usually run on authoritarian terms. Before there is family, there is ancestry, which contains and conveys more information than your DNA report can tell you. Yet just like we carry the DNA of our ancestors, we’re also dragging around their pain, their loss, and their unresolved issues.

This situation presents us with problems that can be worked through and even resolved, though this must be done consciously. It’s not the kind of thing that just happens, like YouTube on autoplay. No app will do the work for you. No drug will do the work for you.

And there are no fast results, only the satisfaction of knowing that you’re taking one step at a time to heal yourself, to embrace and live from true self rather than not-self, and the faith that your progress will eventually add up.

The Saturn-Pluto Conjunction, Square Eris

On Jan. 12, 2020, there will be a one-time conjunction of Saturn and Pluto. This is an approximately 35-year cycle (it varies based on how long Pluto spends in a sign in any given era). The last two experiences of Saturn and Pluto were the most recent conjunction, in 1982, and the most recent opposition, in 2001-2002.

Saturn to Pluto describes what Richard Tarnas calls a cycle of contraction. It tends to lead to reactionary politics, the rise of conservatism, and the experience of fear as a way of life. For example, there was a conjunction in 1947, soon after the end of World War II and at the dawn of what became known as the Cold War (think: the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, blacklisting, etc.).

Planet Waves
Former Pres. Gerald Ford, with future presidents Reagan and Bush the first, at the 1980 Republican National Convention in Detroit’s Joe Lewis Arena.

There was an opposition in 1965, representing the rage, tension and strife aspect of the 1960s, rather than the peace and love aspect. Under this influence, the Johnson administration (using the false-flag “Tonkin Gulf Incident” or “Maddox Incident” as a pretext) committed to plunging into the Vietnam War in August 1964, resulting in tens of millions of boys being sent to murder people in Southeast Asia. This ripped through American society, creating a wound that has yet to heal.

Then there was a conjunction in 1982, at the time of the “Reagan revolution,” the merger of church and state (Evangelicals + Republicans), the U.S. participating in both sides of a 10-year war between Iran and Iraq (that has, in truth, yet to end), the U.S. funneling money into an illegal CIA war in Nicaragua, and other elements of modern conservatism.

Next came the opposition of Aug. 5, 2001, which occurred the day the infamous CIA presidential daily brief was being written: Bin Ladin Determined to Strike in U.S. — that one. This opposition, too, crated a rift in society that has yet to heal.

Note that on the last three stops of this cycle were false-flag or otherwise fraudulent events that dragged us into seemingly endless war.

Beyond Pain and Frustration

The square of the Saturn-Pluto conjunction to Eris is not a cause for optimism. It is a cause for constructive action. It is a calling to awaken to the bloodthirsty property of human nature, and to pay close attention to what drives us to be that way.

Whether we’re talking about a psychopathic dictator or a hapless population, I think the thing that drives us is emotional pain and frustration. Needless to say, there is little you can do about your neighbors and how they feel. But there is plenty you can do about yourself, and how you feel.

It’s likely that just about every element of the environment will seem to drag you away from focusing on your healing process, and on feeling good about who you are. You will have to take care of that yourself.

Whether we like it or not, we’re being pushed and dragged into a false individualism, a fraudulent condition of “every man for himself.” We’ll have to address that one, too, which will begin with consciously healing our severely wounded ability to trust.

And that particular healing agenda is being chronicled in the current movements of Venus and Mars, distinctly personal planets, which describe how we relate to others, how we treat others, and ultimately, how we treat ourselves. As part of this process, we must reclaim our inner space. I will have many ideas about how to do that in the coming weeks and months.

With love,

eric

Shining a Light on Pluto

By Amanda Painter

I recently ran across a Planet Waves article from a few years ago that described Pluto in Capricorn as wanting us to address the deepest subject matter of where ‘systems’ — such as family, religion, government, the legal system, and so on — pack all of their values into us, and then we end up with all that as ‘baggage’ that we have to sort through. Ten years into Pluto’s journey through Capricorn, I think it’s safe to say that was a pretty accurate description. Pretty much daily at this point we’re confronting events and experiences that center on these issues, and which ask us to take the conversations ever deeper.

Planet Waves
Trail to Vernal Falls, Yosemite; photo by Amanda Painter.

At the top of the list, of course, are the ways the systems mentioned reinforce values around race, sex and the misuse of power in regard to each.

Those topics, in turn, are closely related to our attitudes toward the natural environment (and our place in it), economic mobility, the use of emerging technologies, approaches to and accessibility of health care… I could go on and on. But I suspect few would disagree that, at least in the U.S., race and sex (or sexual violence) are the two hottest of the hot-button issues in our polarized cultural dialogue.

Pluto in Capricorn is insisting that we dig into these areas as deeply as we can, and sort out what in there is entirely personal, and what is really collective. Yet I have to wonder: given the very large number of people who have direct personal experiences and even trauma involving one or both of those topics, is it truly possible to differentiate personal from collective?

I’m not 100% sure. Though I suspect that tomorrow’s square to Pluto by the Libra Sun could hold some hints. The sign Libra speaks of one-to-one relationships (among other things); with the Sun there, we get an emphasis on how we express ourselves in relation to others directly. As in, how we are in relation to one other specific person at a time.

That said, with Venus — ruler of Libra — in retrograde motion in Scorpio, there’s a stronger than usual sense of how we relate to ourselves, underscoring this idea of relating to others. Perhaps this indicates that the current Sun-Pluto square offers a slightly more introspective version of the typically action-urging square energy.

It’s clear that many people are afraid of this kind of introspection — introspection that must lead to making changes based on what is learned. Right now, I see a lot of people feeling empowered as never before to speak their stories (often stories of pain) in the face of powerful systems; many are working to shift the overarching narrative from one of silently going along to get along, to one of insisting that we all see with clear eyes what has been happening all along, and then work to change it — to change the value systems and institutional systems that perpetuate violation and iniquity. We see the fear of this process every time there is pushback by those in power against those who have been suffering for so long.

Autumn Reading is Complete

“Hard to believe this not a reading for an individual chart. Much gratitude.”

— tejomommy, on the Empathy-Pathos readings

Dear Friend and Listener:

I’ve now finished EMPATHY-PATHOS, your 2018 autumn reading. These presentations are 40-45 minutes long, organized by Sun sign and rising sign. For months, I’ve been writing nonstop about Venus and Mars retrograde, and these readings bring my thoughts to a personal level.

Planet Waves
This is me at the Planet WAves FM desk earlier this evening.

My focus is inner development, spiritual growth, raising awareness and taking action. I am basically a motivational speaker using astrology as my frame of reference. You will feel better about yourself and your life after listening — and the readings will stand up to many playings.

The readings all include a review of Mars retrograde, as well as thoughtful consideration of Venus retrograde. I bring my experience working with Chiron to the discussion, and for each sign, discuss the implications and possibilities of Chiron in Aries.

And for all of the signs, I consider what is happening in your birth sign or rising sign right now — that is, important planets and minor planets transiting your sign.

I’m one of a very few astrologers who can do a thorough reading without the need for a natal chart. This skill has taken me many years to develop, and I’ve had your help! We’ve prepared samples of all 12 readings, which are linked directly below this letter. This is your opportunity to experience depth astrology.

You may order all 12 signs here or choose your individual signs here. If you would rather purchase by phone, you may call at (845) 481-5616.

The readings all come with original music by Vision Quest, the in-house Planet Waves ensemble.

With love,

eric

“Just listened to the Empathy Fall reading, very pertinent and helpful. Some things are reaffirming, too, especially about looking to the inner self. I’ll listen to this several times and take a few notes. Thanks to Eric!”

Libra New Moon; Kavanaugh Recap

Dear Friend and Listener:

This week’s edition of Planet Waves FM [play here] includes a brief description of EMPATHY-PATHOS, and then discussion of what happened with Brett Kavanaugh getting on the Supreme Court.

I do a retrospective “power analysis” on the situation using my reference chart from the Midwest Academy, which teaches activists how to be more effective. Then I read the New Moon chart, and then close the program with a short Tantra Studio. My musical guest is Rusted Root.

If I sound a little sleepy, it’s because I am! I had been working on your autumn readings all week.

Rupturing, Unpacking, Representing

By Amanda Painter

We seem to have seen an uptick in the last couple years of major Hollywood feature films addressing representation of black Americans, whether through subtle social critique (such as Sorry to Bother You and Get Out) or overlooked history (BlacKKKlansman and Hidden Figures) or the world of comic-book superheroes (Black Panther). Any of these movies could be helpful in unpacking attitudes about race and related social values, as inherited from various cultural systems and institutions.

Planet Waves

Such is the work of Pluto in its journey through Capricorn, and tomorrow the Libra Sun makes a square to Pluto that could further compel additional unpacking on an internal, personal level. That work tends to be quieter; more like a ‘day in the life’ documentary rather than a blockbuster action flick.

Making the rounds at film festivals this year is Hale County This Morning This Evening, directed by RaMell Ross. An “inspired and intimate portrait of a place and its people,” the film chronicles the lives of Daniel Collins and Quincy Bryant, two young African American men from rural Hale County, Alabama, for five years.

According to the summary on its YouTube page:

“Collins attends college in search of opportunity while Bryant becomes a father to an energetic son in an open-ended, poetic form that privileges the patiently observed interstices of their lives. The audience is invited to experience the mundane and monumental, birth and death, the quotidian and the sublime. These moments combine to communicate the region’s deep culture and provide glimpses of the complex ways the African American community’s collective image is integrated into America’s visual imagination.”

What are the consequences of our social construction of race? How does beauty manage to flourish despite those consequences?

The Hale County website describes Ross’ intention that this film “ruptures racist aesthetic frameworks that have historically constricted the expression of African American men on film.” That sounds like the work of Pluto to me; our work is to bring the Libran Sun’s light of justice and humanity to our viewing of it, and to the ongoing dismantling of those inherited values that reinforce oppression.

Our Gifts to You: A Little Something Extra

Dear Friend and Reader:

It took me a long time to figure out what kind of gift to offer for new and returning subscribers. Tee shirts seemed too complicated; you need at least six sizes to get started, and not everyone wants a shirt. Tote bags are useful but kind of boring.

So I thought: journals. I love notebooks, and just about everything I write starts scribbled down on paper. I know my readers are a little old-fashioned, so this seemed like the perfect thing.

Planet Waves
Black smaller, pink larger, embossed with the Planet Waves logo. There are a few hand painted sketchbooks left, with heavy, acid-free paper.

Then…I researched embossed journals for about six months. That’s how long it took. I requested or purchased samples of the best that suppliers had, and all kinds of stuff came floating in the door. It was more challenging than I imagined to find a nice one, though finally I did.

Everything had to be right: the paper, the lines, and how the book feels in your hands.

However, the one I selected was being discontinued. I ordered as many as we could reasonably afford. We now have two main options: small black ones, and larger pink ones (these are new).

Together, they are the approximate color of Good & Plenty candy. I am one of these people who loves anything pink (sweatshirts, nail polish, headbands, a hot pink Squier guitar that I gave to Zosha a few years ago). We also have a few hand-painted notebooks left, which are acid-free sketchbooks.

You can get an embossed notebook with any monthly, quarterly or yearly membership to Planet Waves. If, by the way, there’s a calling for hand-painted ones, I will make one more-or-less to your preferences (for those who sign up for a full-year Backstage Pass).

Planet Waves
October 2018 Monthly Horoscope (#1222) | By Eric Francis Coppolino
Aries

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Let people be honest with you. This is a choice — as much of a choice as to speak one’s truth. Be open to listening, and to sharing your feedback — though keep that part modest. The thing to remember is that people’s story is not necessarily the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. But that does not matter, really, because all statements are symbolic. Symbols stand for something else. What you need to listen for is that something else: what is being represented? Is it a feeling, an opinion, a concern, an idea, a challenge? One way to listen interactively is to say, “I hear you saying [whatever, which you state in your own words].” Then keep listening, for the correction. One thing to consider are the ways that someone might be speaking your truth for you. So keep asking yourself whether anything you hear is personally relevant for you. You might find that people will have a way of revealing your secrets to you, or putting into words what you cannot usually say. If any such material comes up, take the occasion to speak openly. Venus retrograde in Scorpio will offer you opportunities to share what was previously concealed, and to reach a deeper level of intimacy with yourself and others. You can follow this gently to unusually deep places, and learn easily what is otherwise difficult to grasp. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Taurus

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — This year’s astrology, including the retrogrades of Venus and Mars, is here to help you prepare for the long-term presence of Uranus in your birth sign. That began in May; it will retreat briefly for the winter, and commence for the next seven years in March. Uranus in your sign suggests the rapid, ongoing emergence of new ideas of who you are. The recent Mars retrograde and the current Venus retrograde seem designed to shake you loose from your preconceptions, prejudices and concepts (such as of self and other). This, in turn, will help you shed your skin each time the moment arrives. Most of what people are is contained within their ideas, and right now, all of yours are being subjected to a series of tests and verifications. That does not mean they are all wrong; rather, that you need to be bold about evaluating what is true for you, and not be afraid to ask any question — of yourself, or of another. Venus and Mars retrogrades have been running what you might think of as test scripts that will facilitate just this kind of inquiry. You are being presented with circumstances that invite the ongoing questioning of what seems like reality. And at the moment, it’s particularly easy for people to grasp where you are coming from, even if it does not feel that way. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Gemini

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You are no longer subject to what other people think you should believe. You never were, though it was difficult to feel your way to a point of independence. This largely involved your reticence to be controversial or to seem aggressive by challenging people — even if that challenge came only in the form of you being you. Events this year have shown the futility of this approach; circumstances have taught you that you have no choice but to assert yourself, if you want your mind to be free. Conflict, challenging people, and challenging yourself are how you figure out who you are. You cannot live in avoidance of conflict, on the level of ideas. That would be the equivalent of putting a bag over your head, and calling yourself a visionary. You must say what you see, and not be afraid to be challenged, to be wrong, or to call out what is obviously false. This does not mean being a jerk, though it will help to cast off any fear of being seen that way. You can be friendly, funny, and argumentative, and still be a good sport. It helps if you don’t take yourself so seriously that you can’t take being made fun of. Your sense of humor is the most useful talent you can bring to any discussion of reality. See the humor in everything. That’s a sign you’re perceiving the world with an open heart. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Cancer

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Current activity in Libra is encouraging you to settle in and make home. If you’re happy where you are, then that’s the perfect place. On the home front, the place to start is to take charge of your kitchen, your food supply, and the preparation of meals. This is the center of any meaningful concept of home, particularly for you. Take the role of the one who nourishes and nurtures, as an active practice of karma yoga. Give this six months, till the vernal equinox, and then re-evaluate your life, your relationships, your sense of grounding and safety, and your sense of home. When it comes to intimate partnerships, begin by considering inwardly any concerns you have. This is different from stuffing them down. Quite the opposite — you’re hanging out with any issues in an active and conscious way, seeking first within yourself for the source of the conflict. You might decide that you have some accountability or at least the ability to resolve things on your own in a way that sets you free. However, you might notice that you have an actual concern you want to raise, and the time to do that is after you’ve done an accountability check on your own. Projection is a serious problem, and you are the only one who can do something about it. Account for what is the product of your own mind and feelings, and you will be a lot happier. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Leo

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You must take care of yourself: rest, food, sunshine. That, and just the right amount of work, which could be a bit more than most people are capable of. Then, intersperse generously with rest, food and sunshine. It will also help if you gradually remove sources of conflict from your life. You have seen the toll it can take, on your productivity, and on your ability to feel good. A great many people live with conflict as a way of life, or in some way depend on others to disrupt the flow of their existence. To the extent you thrive on chaos, for whatever reason, it’s time to eliminate that. This includes choosing friends and partners who are respectful, because that’s a better way for you to live. These things need to be long-term commitments. There will be some delay between the time when you rotate the wheel, the rudder moves and the ship begins to turn — so the sooner you start, the better. Part of why removing conflict is so important is that you will make room for supportive people, who demonstrate their love and appreciation of you. Don’t be afraid to turn this into direct support, and ask for the help that you need, when you need it, or better yet, well in advance. For example, take leadership and make sure the workloads that surround you are reasonably distributed. You have amazing vitality, though you are not invincible — nor do you want to be. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Virgo

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — When you think of wealth, think of food. When you think “bottom line,” think food. Your bank account is one thing; what you are able to eat is another. The beauty of food is that there reaches a point where it costs less to eat better, especially if you’ve been eating out of the house a lot. Organizing your life around food will require you to do some adjusting, restructuring and rethinking, and you will be happier, healthier and probably wealthier for it. Then, there’s a related subject, though it might not seem that way, which is your ability to speak (or write) your personal truth. This will require a process of discovery that is currently well underway. A series of aspects with the retrograde of Venus are offering you a rare opportunity to be courageous, to be self-inquisitive, and to find words for what might otherwise, at other times, seem impossible to express. The concept of secrecy, as you experience it, needs to come under careful review. Nothing is ever really kept private; the question is whether it’s expressed in useful, wholesome ways, or ways that are toxic and self-defeating. At this time in your life, you have a profound need to learn how to be articulate, about what matters the very most to you. That means developing the ability to speak from your center, though particularly gathering the focus and discipline to be able to express yourself in writing. For the benefit of your health, sanity and strength, there is no substitute. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Libra

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Current planetary movements involving your birth sign describe Libra as the sign of individuality and introspection rather than the sign of relationships. This is in part associated with Venus retrograde in your neighboring sign Scorpio, which describes a deep journey of self-awareness for you. Yet it is this inner exploration that will bring you to a new place of contact with others. Even so, you must contract before you can expand. Your self-awareness must always be the property that leads you through any situation you find yourself in, because your “self” is the only thing you have that could possibly relate to the world. So in this sense, self-awareness involves monitoring your environment and how you respond to it. This implies a much larger concept of self than we normally mean when we say the word. Yet the prevailing lesson of Venus retrograde seems to be that you and your environment are so closely related, you can consider them the same thing. Still, the most dependable information will be found within yourself; and this, in turn, provides you with incentive to notice how you feel and what you’re observing at all times. This is not so much a chicken-and-egg matter as it may seem. Notice how your perception of the world changes when your mood changes. Your feelings have the power to bend objective reality, so you may as well stay in contact with them. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Scorpio

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — It’s often difficult for people to see, and to feel, one another’s perspective. This leads to many needless misunderstandings, conflicts and disagreements. You are now in an unusual position to feel the perspectives of others as they feel them, or close to it, needing little explanation. All you need to do is focus and pay attention to how you feel, when considering another person’s reality. The thing to note, in the first instance, is that how they feel will be different from how you feel. You may not be able to understand what you’re feeling from an intellectual perspective. Just noticing the contrast will be helpful. If you are engaged in a dialog, you can make contact statements, which would be mellow: something like, “I get that you’re agitated about this” or, “You seem worried.” Whether you say anything or not, your ability to empathize, by itself, will be supportive. Meanwhile, following the recent Mars retrograde in the family and security angle of your solar chart, you are not willing to have the terms of your life dictated by others, and you’re bold enough to speak up. When you are feeling where people are coming from, it will become obvious how little you need to say, or do, to assert your independence. Mostly, you need to be yourself, and give people the space to be who they are, and never argue the case for your own freedom. You don’t have to. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You will have a more positive outlook once Jupiter has ingressed your sign on Nov. 8. Until then, you can make the most of things, and you have plenty to work with. The most helpful thing you can do, to that end, is to take responsibility for your feelings. The current social trend is for everyone to hold everyone else accountable for how they feel inside. This is not helpful, because it’s not true. Your feelings are your responsibility, which is good news because that means you can influence your emotional responses, evolve how you feel, and understand the inner conditions leading to any particular response you might have to any situation. Said another way, taking responsibility for your feelings is a fundamental step for emerging from any form of victim consciousness that you might experience. It will also help you address fear, once you recognize that nearly all of it is an internal experience having nothing to do with an actual situation in the world. Jupiter ingressing your birth sign will help you figure out how little you have to worry about, and focus on what actually matters. Yet in the month before that happens, it will be an excellent exercise to sort out what is coming from inside you and what is coming from outside. This is a real question. It may be the only question. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Capricorn

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — What has your life been like, in this year of Saturn in your birth sign or rising sign? Old-school ideas about this transit describe it as a time of enforced maturity. It could also indicate the sensation of being held down, on practical matters or emotional ones. Yet for this transit to work its wonders, you will need to take full ownership of it. The message of nearly any Saturn transit is to internalize what Saturn represents. First, that means taking responsibility for time: or, you might say, taking possession of your life on Earth as a finite thing. Then there is taking up the matter of authority as an inner function rather than an outer one. Saturn becomes your friend when nobody has to tell you what to do. Yet the cautionary side of this is that people can become harsh masters of themselves when Saturn is in the neighborhood. People can be much more strict with themselves than anyone else ever was with them. Whatever else may be going on, and whatever you may need to accomplish, you need to give yourself flexibility, room to maneuver, and room to make mistakes. Saturn is an influence associated with what we learn and who we become in the long run, not the short. This is associated with character development and also with your understanding of time. Under the influence of Saturn, time must become your friend and ally rather than an enemy that stalks you. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Aquarius

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Anxiety is one of the most serious problems the world is facing right now, particularly here in the Western world where people have a little less to worry about than many other places. Many, many people deal with anxiety, more or less effectively. I bring this up now because you have both Saturn and Pluto in your 12th solar house, and that can be a formula for stress or panic. If you know this, you can have a model of what it’s about and how to handle yourself. You will also be able to tap into the resources that are involved. Both planets in Capricorn, and Venus retrograde in Scorpio, describe distinguishing what has been passed down to you through the generations from what is actually your self-acquired personal property. I suggest you make a long-range plan of sorting this out (and, it’s a topic I’ve reflected on in many annual readings for your sign, which you can find here, open access). However, there is one immediate thing to be aware of. Mars in your sign has entered new territory for the first time since going retrograde many months ago. Mars will lead you to strive for what you want, and to push people, a little and sometimes a lot. That can come with a backlash of guilt. This is the thing to watch. All guilt is the product of a childhood dynamic. It does not mean you’ve done something wrong and certainly does not make you a “bad” person — though that is the feeling. Pay attention to how you feel at the end of the day. Let yourself off the hook, offer apologies if necessary, and connect your feelings to how you were treated as a kid, and how you responded. Pisces

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — This year has brought many changes to your circle of friends, how you’re viewed publicly and how you see yourself as a member of the community. Yet these changes are secondary to the inner work you’ve been doing, associated with Mars retrograde in Aquarius. Though you may not see or feel it yet, there are few transits that could do more to set you free from your inhibitions, your fears, and your inner pressure to conform. Conform to what exactly? Whatever line people are expected to toe, however that manifests for you. Given that the Mars connection is 12th house (ancestral material) and Aquarius (family of origin material), what you experienced — whatever it was, and it may have been weird — has involved setting yourself free from the karma and the ideology of your family. Given that this involves the 12th house, the experience itself, and your sense of liberation, could well be a little below the level of full awareness. However, it might also be plain and in your face, requiring only placement in proper context. The sex question is vital: the idea that you’ve somehow been set free from the negative patterning of the people who raised you, and whatever weight of the past they carried. However, set free is only the beginning, and it’s a real commencement only if consciously claimed by you. You must plot your way forward, and take each step as a wholly conscious act. You are not all those other people. You have your own place, your own time, and your own way. Keep reminding yourself of that. Get your full reading by Eric here.

Eric Dear, I feel you should choose to stay out of politics .
I am very close to canceling my subscription right now.
There is a BLUE Wave coming ( no surprise ) Try staying more positive please.

Gee Char, I didn’t say it wasn’t happening, and I have no control over that. I am clear in my position that hope is useless. I am concerned that young people are supposed to be our saviors and are not voting. One last thing. I do not pander to my audience. My job is not to tell you what you want to hear, or what sounds good. My job is to call it like I see it. That does not mean I’m right. My purpose as a writer is to offer a point of view, despite whoever might cancel their subscription. This is the whole point. I am not playing into that kind of pressure. Personally, I prefer to be confronted by views that I disagree with, and I invest time and energy into finding common ground with people who watch Fox News. That is the missing piece. I’ll be doing a new article before the election on liberal and conservative and how we need to rethink these concepts.

I beg to differ, dear Char. Eric’s piece is deeply positive and gives wonderful advice and guidance on how to address these these challenging time, and how they are an opportunity for profound healing if taken the right way. He tells it like it is – and I am deeply grateful for that, as I’m having to deal with an extremely toxic work environment right now – which is causing me a lot of grief. I’m not going into the politics element here. But this is wonderful: “The less that inner life is respected and honored and treated as something deserving of healing and attention, the angrier Mars in Aquarius will seem. Yet we live in times when there is an increasingly vapid notion of what interior reality is.”
    Bless you, dear Eric.

There is a thing I can do about how my neighbors feel. I can remind them that their feelings are their own and of their own creation. Encouraging self governing instead of self indulgence.

We are all Responsible for our response abilities.

      1. Sue Edwards

Absolutely, Eric. We have no control over what another thinks or feels. We can, however, change it by offering another view/idea.

Not change in the way of agreement. Change, in the way of planting an idea in a mind that did not have it before. Once heard, it cannot be unheard. With that addition, consciousness itself has shifted.

The key I found was/is to endeavor to be Loving, allowing it to be communicated Heart to Heart, bypassing a Mind that might not really be thinking in the first place. Coming from emotions excepted from thought.

We offer choice where maybe there wasn’t one. Think one way and feel “good”. Think another way and feel “bad”. Loving ideas are infectious. Even monkeys can understand the difference between pushing one button that brings bananas and another that brings an electrical shock.

The monkey within me prefers bananas.

what I see is that the uglies are being exposed. Which means to me that they ARE being exposed. Light is increasing and it’s coming in in our inner (quantum) levels.

It’s nothing new. It’s all been going on for a long long time and remained successfully hidden. We had our own illusions of pretending it didn’t exist. Now all our illusions and the structures we created in support of them are collapsing.

Now we can start showing what we’re made of and dealing with these issues. Like Eric shares, it is a time of Great Healing. In some way, shape or form, we have all been raised in abusive and dysfunctional environments. Being able to see it and admit it is halfway to resolving the issues and stopping it.

Sometimes things fall apart to come back together against in a different way. Humanity is being stirred up, like a soup whose ingredients were being mixed in proportions that were nauseating. We’re going to continue to be stirred up until we come together creating something harmonious to all our systems.

Out anxieties and fears are useful, too. It’s what some of us require in order to awaken us out of our complacency. The lesson learned in surrendering our lives over to some type of outer authority is to NEVER do it again.

My only correction would be the statement about our boys being sent to murder. In fact, our boys were murdered. My husband still says he was one of “Johnson’s boys,” and was one of the early troops sent. A friend was in the first major battle, retold in the movie “We Were Soldiers.” He said he couldn’t sleep for 5 years after he came home. The soldiers are still dying from every imaginable problem, including suicide, as are current veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns. Never forget – it was Nixon who ended the war, like it or not. Think and read before you vote. The older I get the more I like Ron Paul, and I have noted that Trump hasn’t rushed into any new wars. ISIS? What’s that? We have dialogue with North Korea! If Hillary or McCain had been elected, we would have been at war with Iran and/or North Korea a long time ago, and it would have been brutal. When you consider all that Nixon accomplished besides EPA, OSHA, CIVIL RIGHTS ACT, dialogue with Russia that led to the period known as “Détente,” and opened trade with China, etc., you have to wonder about how/why he was destroyed. I even read someplace that he wrote or was putting together an outline for a National Health Insurance program. Say what? He signed the HMO law, which has led to intolerable health insurance rates, a decidedly unforeseen problem that should have been corrected by our sitting congress. ha, those cowards. My two cents.

Three cheers, Patricia. Always good to hear the opinion from the less-reported side.

Politics always seems to me to be the legal processing of self-interest. You work hard, struggle and fight for the best interests of your offspring. Who wouldn’t? But one man’s profit is another man’s loss.

It is time to embrace globalisation. We are all marooned on this rock in space. We are one. There is no alternative but to work together.

Thank you Eric for bringing Light to the Saturn/Pluto conjunction square Eris. It is not too soon to begin discussing. It is still a year away but I feel it working on me very personally now as we begin the build up. What you don’t mention (I’m sure you will as it gets closer), is not only is there the Saturn/Pluto conjunction, but THEY are also conjunct the Sun/Mercury/Ceres all around that 23 degree mark. And for fun Jupiter is hanging out close by too at 9 degrees Capricorn. So a stellium of planets almost all conjunct in Capricorn square Eris in Aries. That is quite a fucking line up!

As an Aries, with a Sun/Venus conjunction at 23 degrees Aries, I have been acutely aware of this event for sometime now. You can say that I am being led to it by a Power that is bigger than me…but is Me. I look forward to your exploration of this as the time comes closer. I suspect it has to do with a new way of being as the old ways get confronted. Every individual must be accountable for their own thoughts/actions/healing/growth…must make the choiceless choice between Love and Fear (in every moment). Of course, that is/has always been the case but I don’t think it is going to be much of an option in the near future. We will need examples of how to practically do this in all the myriad of ways that life offers us. As an Aries, I suspect I will be a part of this evolution. Although I feel it very strongly, and am taking massive action in my life at the moment in the world, how it unfolds and what my role will be is still a mystery – so I am looking forward to it in Trust as I Know that it is a destiny thing for us all. Looking forward to your 2019 readings as always but maybe even more so this new year. Thanks for all you do Eric!
