The Day of Gutsy Confrontation: Birthdays and Planet News

The Day of Gutsy Confrontation | Order Your 2019-20 Gemini Reading | All Other Signs

For some time, your life has been a confrontation about whose power and influence not only guide but also define you. Ask yourself frequently who is actually making your decisions, and on what basis. Even if you feel that it’s you, the thing to question is what constraints seem to box you in. It’s high time that nobody held any power over you, though if there is indeed power, someone has to hold it: and it will be you, or someone else. This is not a hard choice to make.

Today Mars in Cancer makes its exact opposition to Saturn in Capricorn (it will encounter Pluto in Cap — and Eris in Aries — next week). One possible manifestation of Mars-Saturn, particularly in an emotional sign like Cancer, is to feel lonely, cut off, inhibited or somehow unable to make an impression on others (though you may be feeling angry, feisty or frustratingly lusty). I suspect that when this dynamic is present, it adds a particular kind of fuel to whatever inner fire is sputtering for some recognition or sense of authority.

Feeling lonely or inhibited can foster resentment toward anyone who seems to possess more freedom, attention or power; that resentment can act like a burr in your britches. And that irritation could come out sideways in destructive ways if you don’t feel empowered to articulate it directly. But remember: the point of knowing that this kind of energy pattern may be afoot is that you then have an opportunity to see what’s going on, and can make choices that feel better and may lead to more productive outcomes in your interpersonal interactions. Note that you could encounter this in projected form, coming from someone else.

Mars in a trine to Neptune in Pisces may reflect a lower energy state than usual, and that inertia might exacerbate any feelings of being blocked or stymied. Yet Neptune at its best also offers considerable creative energy. And with Mercury also moving into these same aspects, you could very well put your imagination to good use in coming up with sensitive-yet-expressive ways of communicating your will and desires.

The Scorpio Moon will briefly turn this configuration into a grand water trine. Translation: watch out for emotional whirlpools. Staying in touch with verifiable facts and the actual, tangible limits of a situation could help — and see if you can dive under the surface of whatever’s bugging you or swirling around you. The deeper the water, the more stillness is available where you can get your bearings.

Begin your solar year by celebrating everything you value about yourself. This goes deeper than the cultural ritual of the birthday party: it’s about you looking within and honoring all that you bring to the world. We may all be minuscule on the grand scale of the cosmos, but each of us contributes something unique to humanity that is irreplaceable. Be proud of your share in this, and keep on being yourself.

Prepare for your mind and your mouth to begin moving a good deal quicker today. The Sun enters Gemini this morning, and then Mercury — ruler of Gemini — follows just a few hours later. With two such expressive planets moving from deliberate (yet sometimes blunt) Taurus to a sign that runs on multiple tracks at once, keep your hands firmly on the wheel as you lean into any curves the day throws you. You may in fact be able to grasp multiple sides of a story of concept, and that sense of clarity could be very useful. It’s also a great reminder to ask others their thoughts on any issue at hand — and then truly listen — just in case they can see something from their vantage point that you’re missing.

On a much less cerebral level, an opposition between Venus in Taurus and Typhon in Scorpio offers an image of confronting strong emotions, either your own or those of someone you’re close to. No matter how intimidating that kind of vulnerability may feel, remember that there is tremendous strength in emotional honesty. The thing is, it’s the kind of strength that reveals itself most clearly as — or after — you step into it to express what’s been going on beneath the surface. When you show up in this way for yourself, you might be surprised to discover how willing the other person is to rise to the occasion.

With the Scorpio Moon moving towards its opposition to the Taurus Sun (tomorrow’s Full Moon), notice whether and with whom you’re feeling any tension. It could be emotional, sexual or physical; it might take the form of stubbornness, possessiveness, or a need to be expressive coming up against an urge to be private. If you’re feeling frustrated, can you communicate that in a constructive way, rather than projecting the frustration onto the other person in hopes that they’ll figure it out and address what’s wrong for you?

Beginning by emphasizing the ways you (and the other person) are safe and secure could help to set the groundwork for more productive negotiations over the next couple of days. Even something as simple as being sure you’re both well fed and rested may help — though if a situation is truly high stakes and feels like it’s volatile, waiting until after Saturday might be wiser. With Mars in Cancer still moving into its opposition to Pholus in Capricorn, strong emotional reactions have the potential to spiral out of control.

That said, sex could be a useful outlet over the next few days, particularly if you stay aware of how you’re connecting emotionally to your partner (and/or to yourself). Venus in Taurus is holding open the door for some experimentation and surprises in relationships; actively seeking new stimulation should help to mitigate any uncomfortable feelings of disruption. Today, in particular, it might be satisfying to review and restructure the spaces in your home (and therefore in yourself) set aside for erotic or creative self-exploration.

Communicate your feelings and thoughts as clearly as you can to loved ones. You’re experiencing some deeply transformative astrology, and would almost certainly benefit from the support of those around you as you navigate the various changes. The closer you bring friends into the picture, the more engaged they are likely to be as your allies. An atmosphere of mutual trust and confidence may well aid their growth processes as well as yours.

Focus on practical matters as much as possible today. A trine between Mercury in Taurus and Saturn in Capricorn should open the door to nuts-and-bolts, ground-level work, and the ability to be persistent with it. You might pay particular attention to ways you’ve been needing to re-organize your immediate environment or workspace, especially if that coincides with some inner re-organizing that’s afoot. Mercury in Taurus combined with a Libra Moon could bring your attention to the aesthetics of the situation.

Right around 5:30 pm EDT, the Moon enters Scorpio. This potentially ups everyone’s emotional intensity and the need to get under the surface of something tonight — especially as the Moon makes aspects to several sensitive planets very early in signs. With both Mars newly in Cancer and Venus newly in Taurus (alongside Uranus), this could mean that some form of sexual self-investigation may be on the agenda, whether solo or with a playmate. Finances might also be a prime target for your attention.

Believe it or Not: Scorpio Full Moon

By Amanda Painter

On Saturday, we have the Scorpio Full Moon tucked into a busy chart. Yet it’s happening as Mars makes contact with some potent, society-defining slow movers elsewhere in the sky. There’s a lot of energy zinging around currently — some of it may feel quite personal or internal; some of it might be coming through to you the way the noises of next-door demolition and construction come through a window, even if it’s closed. You may be experiencing a challenging combination of both.

Depending on when you read this, today’s Libra Full Moon may already be separating (it’s exact at 7:12 am EDT / 11:12:03 UTC). If that’s the case, hopefully you’re beginning to feel a little relief if a situation got tense or confrontational; things should start to resolve themselves. If you’re trying to figure out what the heck has been going on in that regard, the aspects featured in yesterday’s Written in the Planets are still in force and worth a review; you can also find more detailed information about this Libra Full Moon here.

The Moon enters Scorpio about an hour and a half after its opposition to the Sun peaks; it then opposes Uranus in Taurus almost immediately. If you encounter some kind of surprise or disruption to your routine today — especially one that seems to come from someone else — you’re right on schedule. Scorpio Moons can be known for their ability to respond with strength and energy when circumstances require it. Can you add ‘flexibility’ and ‘curiosity’ to that skillset? Those could be just what you need to investigate whatever pops up today (or to get beneath reactions that accompanied the Full Moon). You may even uncover some inner power that was previously hidden from your full recognition.

Getting Ready to Get Going

By Amanda Painter

Even though the calendar page will turn to a new year in a few days, the astrological year still has most of a season left to it. Yet the sense of one thing ending and something new beginning is still strong — and there is some major astrology on its way to support that sensation, even if the timing is not exact.

For one thing, Uranus will station direct on Jan. 6. This means that ALL the sign-ruling planets will be in direct motion for a spell — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto (the Sun and Moon are never retrograde).

If that doesn’t sound like a cosmic green light to finally move important projects forward, I’m not sure what does. I don’t know about you, but after the continual feeling of limbo I experienced with this year’s inner-planet retrogrades, I’m really looking forward to a phase of momentum and traction, even if it’s brief.

Of Restlessness, Retrogrades, and Choices

By Amanda Painter

How is this Mercury retrograde going for you? We only have about a week of it left (not counting a few days for things to shake back into place after it stations direct on Dec. 6); so hang in there. Personally, I feel like some of the other current astrology is contributing more to a sense of restlessness; but really it’s all part of the same environment, so it’s hard to say for sure.

For one thing, we have several objects in the last degree of their respective signs, or about to be. In zodiac order, these include: retrograde Uranus in Aries, Venus in Libra, Mercury about to retrograde into late Scorpio, Pholus in Sagittarius, and Vesta in Capricorn.

Planets in the last (or ‘anaretic’) degree of a sign are often said to feel a little edgy; kind of like how we human beings can get a little edgy in anticipation of a big transition in our lives. Add in that some of those planets are making oppositions or squares to each other — aspects of tension — and the restlessness factor increases.

Plus, we have the Sun in the last sign of a season (Sagittarius), the civil-calendar year is almost over, and Mercury is retrograde in a sign that’s partly about forward intention (in a long series of inner-planet retrogrades this year). The sky seems to be reflecting a general sense of just wanting to get on with it — whatever ‘it’ might be.

So we end up with some questions. What absolutely ought to wait till Mercury’s direct, so that you don’t make more work for yourself than is warranted? What must you address or take steps toward so you can channel this energy creatively, rather than repressing it in unproductive ways?

What can you get started on — such as research, preparation, getting organized, making repairs, reviewing your progress — that might put you in a much better position to take bigger steps in the near future? What’s the different between being wisely cautious and giving in to crippling self-doubt or paranoia?
