Of Dreams and Everyday Miracles: Gemini New Moon

The Moon is currently waning toward a conjunction with the Sun near mid-Gemini: the Gemini New Moon, which occurs on Monday, June 3. It appears to be a lunar event that may help to focus us on the more subtle ways our perception can work; such as how what’s on the periphery of consciousness in more than one way can offer keys to our greater self-understanding.

Specifically, I’m looking at two asteroids flanking the Sun and Moon in that chart: Magdalena (associated with Mary Magdalene, a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth) and Altjira (named after an aboriginal creator deity of the dreamtime).

Among the delineations I’ve seen for Magdalena are commitment to a group or collective cause, and an inner change in direction after intuitively noticing small signs or miracles in everyday life. Interpretations for Altjira include envisioning and dreaming, as well as some form of withdrawing or distance.

New Moons tend to be more internally oriented than Full Moons anyway, and signify one’s conscious awareness and unconscious aligning. With Magdalena and Altjira so closely involved, there’s dual emphasis on the suggestion to pay particular attention to your intuition, incidents of synchronicity, perfectly timed words and ideas offered by someone in a group or by ‘the collective’ (the collective unconscious?), the dreams you have while sleeping this weekend — even if they seem somehow distant — and how any of these things match what you envision for your life.

After the Moon enters Aries later today (2:32 pm EDT), keep tabs on your more impulsive urges and your temper. True, you may simply find yourself extra motivated to get moving on a personal project. However, since the Moon will be aspecting several sensitive objects early in the other cardinal signs (Cancer, Libra and Capricorn), there’s the potential to feel some pressure or internal tension — and it might not come through in entirely conscious ways.

At the same time, the Sun opposite retrograde Ceres in Sagittarius looks like a suggestion to notice who’s nourishing your intellectual and spiritual life (and how you may do the same for them). Is there any sense of confrontation in this relationship? It’s not uncommon for those who teach us and push us to grow to also provoke challenging responses from us. How do you find yourself communicating with this person most effectively? With Mercury (the planet of thinking and communication) aspecting Neptune currently, taking time to be sure you’re formulating your thoughts and words carefully and accurately should be helpful.

Mercury makes a conjunction to Altjira, an object named for an aboriginal creation god of the dreamtime, today in Gemini. Both are opposite the Great Attractor, a deep space phenomenon in mid-Sagittarius. If you can remember the dreams you have while you sleep, you might try journaling them or even telling them to a friend to see if some new understanding emerges. Even if you don’t tend to remember your nocturnal dreams, you may wish to pay attention to anything peeking out from the edge of your awareness.

In fact, as the Pisces Moon squares these points in the early hours EDT, it may knock something from your unconscious into a more consciously visible or creatively useful form; it could be an emotional tone that stands out. As you articulate whatever that is, notice if it’s something (or relates to someone) that seems out of reach, but which also has a strong pull for you. It (or they) might even provoke a strong negative reaction; your job is simply to notice that, and see what the effect tells you about yourself.

In our world of extensive social commitments, tribalism-via-internet, and the peer pressure of social media ‘likes’, it can be challenging to retain genuine independence. Today in particular it could feel imperative to guard and tend those parts of yourself that don’t quite fit in with everybody else, or which you’d actively cast off at some point. This is described by a Vesta-Eris conjunction in Aries. Remember that you don’t actually have to go to sneaky measures to accomplish this; you’re far stronger when you can stand unabashedly at your center and let that motivate you to do what matters most to you.

Today is also the last quarter Moon, with the Pisces Moon square the Gemini Sun. With duality the name of the game on both conscious and subconscious levels, what do you need to do to feel integrated in what you express to others? If you’re in a rough patch, this question could come up through a mini-crisis of some sort; if you’re having a relatively smooth weekend, you may feel an infusion of creative energy you can use as you wish.

A trine between the Moon and Mars in Cancer is offering physical energy and emotional vigor for projects, including group work. Getting moving in any form will likely feel good (and if water is involved, so much the better). You may also feel more confident today in sharing certain emotions — though with the Sun square the Moon, you’ll want to choose your words carefully to be sure the message that is heard is the one you want to send. Hidden tensions could make their way out regardless; uncomfortable is that can be, it does give you the opportunity to deal openly with what needs to be addressed.

It’s possible today may bring an encounter with some kind of mentor-figure (which could also be a maternal type), if you have not already had an experience this week that fits that description. This is suggested by an opposition between Mercury in Gemini and retrograde Ceres in Sagittarius. Given the inward- or backward-looking condition of Ceres, you might also consider past guidance you’ve received from such a person that may be useful again now.

Conversations of a particularly intellectual and spiritual or philosophical nature appear to be most likely — though the general topics of travel, higher education could also be in the mix. The thing to notice is an element of the interaction being nourishing — certainly for yourself, but perhaps for all involved — and don’t underestimate the sustenance offered by fun for its own sake. Watch for the small miracles of everyday life; the kind that seem to appear simply because your eyes are open and your intuition is in the ‘on’ position. It could be that you missed something along these lines at one point; catching it this time around could prove useful.

Mars, Chiron and You

As Mars makes its way through Cancer — and thus through a series of potent aspects to many of the planets defining much of current life — it reaches a key marker today: its exact square to Chiron in Aries. This event would have a personal feel to it no matter what. But with Mars in emotional, protective Cancer, and with Chiron in a sign Mars rules (one related to the concepts of self and identity), there’s a picture of taking things very personally indeed — perhaps in ways that could feel challenging.

As has been mentioned elsewhere on Planet Waves recently, western society (particularly the U.S.) has Mars issues. There’s a tendency to default to aggression when fear is encountered, and most people seem to be afraid of a lot these days; for sure, there are a great deal of scary things in the world, and mainstream media often appears crafted specifically to emphasize that fact.

Yet, in addition to all the things ‘out there’ to be afraid of, many people harbor tremendous doubts about what’s inside of them: their desires and sexuality, emotions, needs, dreams, gifts; many doubt whether there’s really anything at all inside that’s deserving of love and acceptance.

In the last year or two I’ve witnessed a few situations in which someone received the affirmation that they are enough, just as they are. Their response to that affirmation has generally been emotional: an outflowing of relief at being seen fully, mixed with grief over the years of feeling disconnected from a sense of wholeness, mixed with disbelief that the affirmation could possibly be true, given how long it has not felt true.

Those emotions could also come out as aggression if someone is too far from a place of being able to hear, feel or even glimpse the message. Anyone who does not feel free to express deep emotion has the potential to lash out in defense of those vulnerable, terrifying parts of themselves.

In our current overall climate of ‘identity politics’ taking over for an embodied sense of individual identity, it can feel as though the stakes are high to hang on to who you are in the face of rapid and overwhelming cultural change. One question that may arise today is: how can you bring your full self into contact with the changes around you, rather than sacrificing the core of what makes you ‘you’? Another question might be: are you feeling at all obsessive about protecting the ‘purity’ of your identity in some way? (Both are suggested by Vesta and Eris in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn.)

A ‘yes’ to either question could make expressing your desires (or your anger) in confident, constructive, and energetically neutral ways challenging, thanks to a square between Mars in Cancer and Chiron in Aries. This could easily manifest as some kind of outburst — followed by an apology. Conditions increasing this possibility include: feeling like you don’t deserve to have your desires met; some degree of shame about your desires or emotions (including anger); or feeling too ‘out there’ or ‘broken’ in some way.

Remember that having desires and emotions is the birthright of every human — and that there are ways to engage with those around you on these topics that still leave room for everyone’s honest ‘yes’, ‘no’, and ‘maybe’. When the Moon enters Aquarius at 1:49 pm EDT, it should offer a more rational space from which to approach your reactions and interactions. Think ‘non-attachment’ rather than ‘chilly’, and you may find yourself open to some new ideas and feelings about them. There is plenty of space for who you are.

With two such expressive planets moving from deliberate (yet sometimes blunt) Taurus to a sign that runs on multiple tracks at once, keep your hands firmly on the wheel as you lean into any curves the day throws you. You may in fact be able to grasp multiple sides of a story of concept, and that sense of clarity could be very useful. It’s also a great reminder to ask others their thoughts on any issue at hand — and then truly listen — just in case they can see something from their vantage point that you’re missing.

On a much less cerebral level, an opposition between Venus in Taurus and Typhon in Scorpio offers an image of confronting strong emotions, either your own or those of someone you’re close to. No matter how intimidating that kind of vulnerability may feel, remember that there is tremendous strength in emotional honesty. The thing is, it’s the kind of strength that reveals itself most clearly as — or after — you step into it to express what’s been going on beneath the surface. When you show up in this way for yourself, you might be surprised to discover how willing the other person is to rise to the occasion.
