Today’s first quarter Moon describes a good landscape for moving something forward, perhaps in an especially expressive way. This lunar phase is actually part of a bigger pattern: a grand cross in the mutable signs involving the Gemini Sun, the Virgo Moon, Jupiter in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces. That configuration may offer some stability for whatever it is you need to do.

Here’s the question: do you feel like you need to loosen something up, or nail something down? Over the course of a year around the zodiac, the mutable signs come at the ends of seasons: after a fixed sign and before the next cardinal sign. As a result, they can sometimes act like one or the other. So you may want to check whether you’re at a point of needing to add flexibility and wiggle room to a process that has plateaued, or whether you’ve been vacillating to the point of inaction and now need to make a firm decision between options.

With the Sun also conjunct the centaur planet Asbolus, it’s also possible you’re in a ‘survivor’s mindset’ of some sort. We’ve all been through shit, and it’s not productive to compare who’s been through the worst; at the same time, there’s value in awareness of where you’ve been, seen alongside where you are now. All of that exists within you at all times. Since you get to choose what to do with it, why not see what new and beautiful places you can go with your well-earned wisdom? Today’s astrology suggests that you don’t have to be a Pollyanna to contribute to the cycle of positive vibes — and even small acts of courage. You only need to be you.

Notice if you’re feeling inclined to sidestep an uncomfortable situation or confrontation through deception, just because you’re discouraged or not in the mood. That said, it’s equally possible your innate idealism could get a boost today. Just keep tabs on the potential for extravagance — which is essentially overstepping your own boundaries — and for overstepping the boundaries of others. Are you sure that person really needs to know everything you have the urge to tell them?

The asteroid Vesta entering Taurus today appears to offer some steady focus and practical devotion you can tap into if needed. Connecting to nature with all of your senses and reorienting on protecting both your personal resources and those of planet Earth may also begin to call to you.

The more you can keep any inner tension around relationship needs and their attendant emotions front and center (as opposed to operating from the shadows), the better today. The asteroid Juno in Cancer is square minor planet Eris in Aries; this could have the potential to manifest as an urge to be less-than-upfront about what’s really driving you emotionally. If you’re feeling ‘unmet’ in any way by a partner or prospect, resist the urge to use any tactic smacking of manipulation to get the attention you desire.

Speaking directly about what you want may feel awkward or scary, but it should give you the satisfaction of taking action that is clear to all involved. Even if the answer you receive is ‘no’, you’ll be in a stronger position within yourself to see your options for next steps. A Sun-Neptune square emphasizes the need to stay aware of just how honest you’re being with yourself — and therefore with others — this weekend.

Also note that Venus, the planet of love (among other things) enters Gemini tonight. This describes a social environment that’s charming, friendly and possibly marked by intellectual rapport and flirtation — which bodes well for many types of weekend situations. If sex is on your agenda, you may feel inclined to a little more variety than you were while Venus was in Taurus. Why not play?

On one level, this week’s astrology is describing some very insistent and action-oriented themes, related to Mercury making the same aspects in the cardinal signs that Mars has been making. At the same time, we have activity in mutable signs lending their own sense of movement, in their own style.

To start with, Mercury is currently in early Cancer.

Over the next couple of days it makes squares to Makemake and Logos in Libra, an opposition to Quaoar in Capricorn, and squares to Salacia and Chiron in Aries (it opposed Pholus in Capricorn on Wednesday). So we’re still working with ideas about how family and generational patterns play out; what we think of ‘secret’ sexual material and how it does and does not get spoken about; and the ‘mystery’ and logic of how things have come to be the way they are.

Today the New Moon in Gemini is exact at 6:02 am EDT; it appears to indicate a busy, multi-layered fusion of your conscious awareness and your unconscious. Or, think of that as what you express externally and what you experience internally. Your intuition and incidents of synchronicity may be prominent, and worth attention. Same with perfectly timed words and ideas offered by someone in a group or by ‘the collective’ (including the collective unconscious), the dreams you had while sleeping last night, and how any of these things match what you envision for your life.

What are you noticing about something (or someone) you feel inexplicably drawn toward? Do you find it polarizing or triggering in any way at the same time? How many layers or angles to the issue do you see, and do you have mixed thoughts or feelings about it?

An asteroid called Magdalena, associated with Mary Magdalene, is very closely conjunct the New Moon. One possibility is that this represents a long-term commitment to a cause, or possibly even a person — though it may be the ideas or philosophy that’s as important as anything, especially if you’re in a position to offer heartfelt support. Saturn and Neptune are offering assistance in working toward your ideals — just remember not to take yourself too seriously in the process.

The Moon enters Gemini today, on its way to a conjunction with the Sun tomorrow: the Gemini New Moon. Your mind may be as busy today and tomorrow as it has been, but it’s possible your thoughts will be directed more inwardly. That’s not to say you won’t talk to anybody; there simply might be more on your mind that goes unsaid.

Multi-tasking looks likely — along with social occasions with more than one goal, especially in terms of communication or a higher/broader purpose than just chit-chat. Even if those activities don’t have the kind of high-energy charge that you’d expect with a Full Moon looming instead of a New Moon, you may still experience a sense of busy-ness.

A square between the Gemini Sun and the centaur Nessus in Pisces brings up the question of duality, particularly where your thoughts and emotions are concerned. The idea with duality-themed signs (the twins of Gemini, the two fish of Pisces) is to find the point of synthesis — which is different from compartmentalization. Whatever you need to express or bring into fuller awareness today, whatever action you need to take to resolve some tension, see if you can do so without hiding or shutting down some other, seemingly conflicting, part of yourself. You are one you; which means all parts of you can coexist consciously. It’s possible this has not always felt the case, but it’s likely time to stop that type of thinking.

One of those, a square to the asteroid Psyche in Aquarius, seems to speak to what might be a stubbornly persistent sense of wounding to do with love and relationships. It may have something to do with jealousy, possessiveness, trying to measure up to social expectations of relationships, or some other niggling self-doubt or insecurity. Whatever it is, if you’re feeling some inner tension about it, that’s a sign that you actually can do or say something about it to begin to heal and resolve it.

Venus is also making trines to Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn between today and Sunday. Even though people often cast Saturn and Pluto as ‘scary’ planets, this configuration actually offers a good deal of support for things like: discussing problems with a relationship partner; the kind of stability that comes with two people living up to their responsibilities together; understanding the deep inner workings of your relationships (including sexually and emotionally). With a little effort on your part, the ground appears well prepared for whatever you need to express, verbally or physically.

Today the Sun makes a square to a minor planet called Orcus, in Virgo. Mythically, Orcus was kind of an ancient Etruscan precursor to Pluto, and the enforcer of contracts. What promises have you made to yourself that are asking to be kept? How do they factor into your ongoing process of shaping yourself? Squares signify internal tension: a signal that you need to do something actively that will integrate the two sides of the square. What is on your mind — perhaps in some kind of dual or paradoxical state — and what do you need to do to bring it into physical form? As you make that agreement with yourself tangible, it will in turn bring forth some new facet of you. This is just one of the subtle ways in which we evolve — not into a ‘better’ person, but simply who we came here to be.

We also have Saturn in Capricorn and Juno in Cancer opposing each other today. Can you give the very thing you seek to receive in a relationship? It’s a hard lesson of life to realize that we often have to give to ourselves first the emotional energy, attention and love that we hope another will show us. The weird paradox is that when we do take care of our own emotional needs first, it can open the space for the other person to meet us and share themselves more freely — though that generally happens as a fringe benefit, rather than as the primary goal. (That said, if someone is withholding to an abusive level, it can take the help of a therapist to sort that out.) Notice in particular whether this dynamic is cropping up with an authority figure, or with someone older (perhaps even parental).

Finally, Mercury in Gemini is exactly opposite Jupiter in Sagittarius today. Be sure you keep toggling back and forth between the bigger picture and the details of any situation — especially if it’s related to business dealings, planning sessions or your larger goals.
