The Mercury Retrograde Blizzard Olympics

Dear Friend and Reader:

Mercury storm and retrograde have arrived on the East Coast with what seems like the new version of the Winter Olympics — how many winter storms can you cram into two weeks?

Planet Waves

While it’s normal to have weather events during the winter, this has been a little strange, and it’s been disruptive. A combination of blizzards and ice storms have frosted the eastern seaboard from Georgia to Maine, resulting in disruptions to every facet of life since the Mercury storm phase began about two weeks ago.

This has been complicated by poor judgment calls in at least two cities, one in Atlanta during an event on Jan. 28, resulting in a civil disaster. Thousands of people were stranded on highways for up to 18 hours. Many abandoned their cars and walked miles home in a scene that rivaled something from a Stephen King novel.

Then on Thursday, New York City’s decision to leave public schools open in the face of an approaching blizzard created a wave of chaos when the city closed schools midday, forcing many parents to leave work in the middle of the storm and retrieve their kids. This was likely the result of the city’s new and inexperienced mayor, Bill DeBlasio, not quite knowing how to handle things.

NBC’s meteorologist Al Roker caused a fuss when he tweeted, “I knew this am @NYCMayorsOffice @NYCSchools would close schools. Talk about a bad prediction. Long range DiBlasio forecast: 1 term,” managing to spell the mayor’s name wrong. The mayor responded on TV by saying being a weather forecaster is not exactly running New York City; Roker responded on Twitter and this story became a focal point of the day.

Now as the temperature creeps up above freezing throughout the region, many areas will face flooding.

Meanwhile, thousands of flights have been canceled, a situation that ripples out across the entire air travel system as equipment is stranded in snowed-in cities and arriving flights have to be diverted elsewhere.

While it may be difficult to make a causal connection between Mercury retrograde and these events, they are happening at the same time.

That is astrology — it’s always about a combination of celestial factors and mundane ones, and their results — in this case, disruptions to transportation and commerce, two Mercury-ruled areas of life.

Meanwhile, the West Coast of the United States is still facing a serious drought. This goes back at least to last July and is just starting to be acknowledged outside the region in a meaningful way. Many cities are on water rationing and it’s unclear how the Central Valley of California is going to keep producing so much of the food that the country depends on, if these conditions persist.

There were some rainstorms in Northern California earlier this month, but not enough to make a difference. This is all part of a pattern of extreme weather events that are happening in many parts of the world, which technology has little power to solve.

Metaphors of the Aquarius Age

Tonight is the Leo Full Moon, and I have some thoughts about that. But first, while the Sun is still in Aquarius, a comment on the Age of Aquarius.

No two astrologers will agree on when this begins (or began). But we are definitely at the cusp of the (prior) Pisces age and the (forthcoming) Aquarius age. Evidence of the Pisces age still having its effects is that belief trumps reason. Denial is still considered a viable way of life. If someone mentions the cost of this perspective, more denial is the supposed answer.

Evidence of the Aquarius age involves patterns. Once a pattern is established, it’s very difficult to get out of it. Pattern makers such as advertisers and people who create political memes know this. Notice how everyone with some power interest tries to crystallize a pattern. That is the main virtue of Aquarius and also its most serious problem.

More evidence is that technology is creating our society faster than we create it, and faster than we can create ourselves. That too is a pattern. Apropos of Aquarius, this is reaching into our personal relationships and group dynamics. Whole generations of people are being raised who would rather text than talk, and who are too intimidated by other people to have a real conversation.

One reason we have to watch this pattern-crystallization thing is that it can create situations that don’t work, where the only solution is a collapse of some kind.

This is why there’s always talk of systems breakdown. The systems we create are generally not flexible enough to accommodate much change, so we naturally assume that they will build momentum and energy and collapse under their own weight.

This includes mental systems — thought patterns, habits and so on. And with the Full Moon in Leo opposing a cluster of planets in late Aquarius, many people are feeling this in some form now. It might be manifesting as the need to change; or as the sensation of imminent change; it might feel like a fear that you must change, but there’s nothing you can do about it.

Or you might have the feeling that if you change one thing, you will have to change everything else (that, by the way, is a vast culture-wide theme).

Mercury, Sun, Nessus in Aquarius

Mercury is retrograde. That started one week ago in early Pisces. Mercury has now retrograded back into Aquarius, where it’s about to make a triple conjunction, with the Sun and with a centaur planet called Nessus.

Nessus has been in Aquarius since 2005, and this is the year when it begins its transition into Pisces. For this Full Moon, however, we have Mercury and the Sun conjunct Nessus, opposed by the Moon.

Planet Waves

Think of the combination of factors in Aquarius as some strange sequence of events putting stress on a complex system.

Once only dealt with by electrical engineers and science fiction authors, we are now all basically supervising complex systems, to the point where we require sophisticated computers to keep up with our correspondence and maintain our schedules.

And many people experience lives so complex, they seem to be on the brink of a system collapse at any moment. Do you have that sensation of waiting for the one thing that will push the whole system too far?

One thing about Nessus is that it addresses the theme of consequences. Nessus can be a study of causes and effects. In Aquarius, we have the theme of group dynamics. Nessus plus Aquarius can seem cold and impersonal — and then all of a sudden, Mercury and the Moon get into the act.

The message here — if you are feeling overwhelmed, pause and examine your options. Get a sense of your time constraints (an Aquarius factor, accentuated by a square to Saturn) and work within them.

Notice the ways in which you may be locked into thought patterns. If you’re experiencing fear, then start to uncouple your thoughts from one another, break the issues down and take them one at a time.

You want to get synergy on your side. That’s the principle of “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” But sometimes you have to take the parts one by one and see what they’re really about before you can see the whole scenario for what it is.

And if you find yourself up in the middle of the night, do something creative with your technology.

Lovingly,

Remembering Three Pioneers Who Changed the World

The world lost three remarkable pioneers this week: Stuart Hall, 82; Shirley Temple Black, 85; and Sid Caesar, 91. Each made an indelible mark on our culture and will remain icons in their own individual ways.

Planet Waves
Stuart Hall. Photo by Dawoud Bey, 1998.

Born in Jamaica on Feb. 3, 1932, Stuart Hall grew up in the colonial West Indies, where the society’s racial inequality profoundly affected him. This influenced his groundbreaking career in cultural studies and sociology after attending Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship.

Hall was one of the founders of the New Left, a term used to describe the activists and theorists of the 1960s and 1970s who demanded reform on social and class roles. His studies examined the links between cultural identity, race and ethnicity.

Hall said in an interview, “We always supposed, really, something would give us a definition of who we really were; our class position, or our national position, or our geographic origins, or where our grandparents came from. And I don’t think any one thing, any longer, will tell us who we are.”

Hall’s Aquarius Sun is in exact conjunction with Mars, symbolizing a philosophical warrior fighting for equal rights. Aquarius is an intellectual air sign strongly attuned with individual freedom of expression. With his Sun and Mars working together for these strongly held values, he was a powerful figure for the ideals of democracy: brotherhood, fraternity and liberty.

Another Rocky Week for Republicans

After struggling to unite Republicans on a demand they could attach to a debt ceiling increase bill, House Majority Leader John Boehner fell back on allowing a clean resolution to pass with the minimum required number of Republicans voting for it. In doing so, he averted a replay of last fall’s fiscal showdown, going against the wishes of his own caucus, and abandoning the so-called ‘Boehner Rule’ that any debt limit increase be tied to equal spending cuts. Far-right voices redoubled their calls for his head on a platter.

Planet Waves
Traffic study or political revenge? Either way, not a good week to be a Republican. Photo by Carlo Allegri.

It was left to Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz to filibuster the bill in the Senate. But there would be no Green Eggs and Ham served this time around. Minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) called for a cloture vote that ended the filibuster and allowed the Senate to pass the resolution 55-43, thereby giving Tea Partiers yet another villain to vilify.

Failure to pass a debt ceiling increase by the end of February could have put the U.S. in default, which most experts believe would wreak considerable havoc on financial markets both here and abroad. The nation will now be able to keep paying its bills through March 2015, and Tea Partiers — and all Senate Republicans — can continue to campaign on having opposed the increase.

West Virginia’s Chiron Return: Another Spill

Barely one month after a Jan. 9 chemical spill rendered the water supply toxic for more than 300,000 residents of West Virginia, a second toxic spill (this time of coal slurry) has poisoned another creek in the same county. Apparently this is what it looks like when a state has its Chiron return with Chiron in Pisces, the zodiac’s ‘ocean’ — although as usual, the leaders of industry (and by extension, government) seem to be slow to awaken to the truth of this healing crisis.

Planet Waves
Surely there are better ways to show one’s pride than by polluting where one works. Image: WDTV.

In this most recent spill, more than 100,000 gallons of coal slurry poured into Fields Creek Tuesday from a Patriot Coal processing facility in eastern Kanawha County, blackening at least six miles of the stream and making it into the larger Kanawha River. The company that manages the Kanawha Valley Water Treatment Plant claimed in a statement Tuesday that this leak would not affect the local water supply.

That is minimal comfort given the “significant environmental impact” of the coal slurry spill. And that is on top of the continued presence of a licorice-like smell — the telltale sign of the previous chemical spill — in the drinking water for area residents.

The local government may have lifted the ban on tap water use following last month’s massive leak of the barely studied chemical MCHM into the Elk River, but more questions than answers persist in the minds of most residents. MCHM has barely been studied; plus it was revealed recently that a second chemical, propylene glycol phenyl ether (PPH), was also leaking at the same Freedom Industries storage facility in January.

New Zealanders Seek Court Action on GM Pine Trees

New Zealand’s Environment Court upheld last week the Bay of Plenty government’s right to include precautionary wording against genetic modification in its regional policy statement. The regional government, along with NZ environmental groups, brought the action due to concern over outdoor experiments using GM pine trees. The Bay of Plenty is a region on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

Planet Waves

Scion, a NZ Crown Research Institute, has been involved in risky outdoor experimentation with genetically engineered pine trees in Rotorua, a district within the Bay of Plenty region, according to the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (BOPRC), one of the groups trying to ban all outdoor GM activity. Scion opposed the precautionary wording in the regional policy statement.

Scion originated in 1947 as part of the New Zealand Forest Service, and changed its name in 2005. The institute conducts research and science and technology development in the areas of forestry, wood products, wood-derived materials and other biomaterials.

The BOPRC cited serious risks of transgenic pollution from Scion’s GE pine tree experiments, in which pine pollen can spread hundreds of miles even at moderate wind speeds.

Environmental organizations in New Zealand contend that the central government has failed to correct serious deficiencies in the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act and therefore regional policy statements such as this one provide an additional layer of regulation against outdoor use of GMOs.

No Flu Shot? Just Pucker Up!

Are we naturally attracted to kissing people with ‘opposing’ immune systems, to balance out what we lack? That is possible according to some scientists. And kissing benefits our immune systems in some other fun ways, according to a blog post by Kate Bartolotta.

Planet Waves

As clinical as trading small amounts of germs sounds, it seems that kissing can boost your immune system if the dose of germs is low. More classically pleasant is the fact that kissing elevates your serotonin levels (the hormone that increases feelings of happiness and wellbeing) and decreases your cortisol levels (the ‘stress hormone’). Heck, even just thinking about being kissed gets our saliva flowing, which helps reduce plaque on our teeth.

Feel like getting even more cerebral about it? Researcher Sheril Kirshenbaum says that we engage five out of our twelve sets of cranial nerves when we kiss — partly a result of all the nerve endings in our super-sensitive (and sensuous) lips, and their proximity to other sense organs (nose, tongue). All those electrical impulses trigger a release of dopamine. That’s part of the ‘natural high’ so many people crave with love and sex, but minus the crash that comes with cocaine (which also triggers dopamine production). Besides, kissing is way cheaper.

As Seen on Australian TV: Sex is More Fun Naked

Can you imagine if sex really was so accepted as normal that your neighborhood pharmacist could help you fit a condom? Or that you might tell your mom while you were in the midst of it? Hopefully this Australian commercial for Naked condoms, written and directed by Gary Eck, is showing us the not-too-distant future. Happy Valentine’s Day — whether you’ll be using a condom, riding bareback or flying solo tonight.

Weekly Horoscope for Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, #987 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Avoid seeming full of your own power or making anything about you unnecessarily, especially at work. You don’t want to become the issue, whatever the issue may be. That would make it difficult to maintain any authority or discipline at all. However, factors in your chart are tempting you to keep the focus on yourself. If you are aware of this tendency it will be easier to address it; so consider awareness the first step. From there, I suggest asking people their viewpoint and listening between the lines for where they are coming from. Take all of this information on board before making any decisions. You are not under pressure to act at the moment, and you are on notice to make your decisions deliberately and meticulously. To do that, you need reliable data, not just hunches. Then you need to choose carefully when to decide and when to implement your decision. Till then, proceed slowly, and keep your ears on.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Be on the lookout for influences designed to confuse or disrupt, into which you might wander unwittingly. Actually, you’ll be able to see these things from a distance if you look up and away from your feet as you walk; then you can take some other direction. Speaking of, I suggest you refrain from discussing longterm plans with those who are not your actual friends. Without veering into paranoia, notice the strategies and agendas of the people around you, and make careful note of them. At the moment, you’re susceptible to negative influences, and the ideas of those whose faith in themselves has been injured can have an impact on you. I suggest, therefore, you focus on spending time with people whose viewpoint is creative and positive — who are doing life-affirming things and who strive to include others rather than compete with them. Elitism has its appeal, but it turns out to be toxic. Thankfully, there are alternatives.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Mercury has retrograded back into Aquarius, which has taken some of the pressure off of a professional situation that seemed like it might run out of control. I suggest you remember (rather than forget) what you learned during the past week or so. The situation or something like it is bound to surface again sometime in the next month or two, and you want to be prepared how to deal with it when it does. That includes knowing what to do with those who play fast and loose with the truth, those who deceive in order to gain position and reputation and those who wear so much makeup they need to dunk their head in witch hazel. If you want to be real, and if you want to live a life of truth, you need to be clever, and you need to use your considerable knowledge. And at the moment, you need to know when to make your move, which won’t be for a few more weeks.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Take initiative on a financial matter and you will be able to break an annoying deadlock. Don’t be deceived by how complex someone else’s negotiating position is, or by how rigid they seem to be. That is largely a ruse; it looks like at least half of what they’re saying isn’t true. Further, you can be pretty sure that someone trying to pull a fast one on you is presently dealing with the results of many such situations in the past. That said, stick to the truth and clarity of your own position. Don’t say you’re right — present the facts that demonstrate that truth. It’s likely that whoever this is will make some attempt to distract or divert you, but simply stick to the simple reality of the situation. As far as timing is concerned, present your viewpoint that this is an immediate matter, then give anyone else involved until Feb. 28 to respond with the appropriate action.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Avoid doom and gloom, worst-case scenario thinking — or at least be aware if such thoughts are dancing through your mind. That will help you choose something else. You are picking up on something larger than you, much larger, something present on a planetary scale. This is true no matter how personal it may feel. Yet on the personal level there is plenty you can do, in addition to monitoring your own mind and addressing any boundary breaches (whether by someone else, or by you) as soon as possible. Maintain your personal integrity, for one thing, both setting an example to others and holding them to a basic minimum. At the same time, be conscious of your use of technology, remembering that all these gadgets that surround us are sold as toys but in fact are tools that can do harm as well as good. Remember that as you use them and you will be doing your part to solve a much larger problem.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You may feel like you’re under some pressure that you don’t understand and cannot identify the source of. This may be showing up as you feeling like you have more problems than you’ll ever be able to solve. I suggest you avoid ‘fix it’ mode, whatever form that may take. The thing to do first is to observe, and the thing to observe first is your mind and its patterns and thought forms. This is the origin of the situation. You are in one of those spaces where your thoughts are creating what seems to be your reality. This is often the case, though it’s not usually as obvious as it is now. Consider yourself on an expedition to find some deception that you were pressured into believing as a child, or that was given to you as an unbending truth. Once you get to that core false idea, you will be able to see how influential it is — and then make a decision what to do about that.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — We live on a lonely planet — one inhabited by more than seven billion people. That being the case, the loneliness must be a product of consciousness, regulated by a diversity of internal factors. Most of those are emotional. One thing you’re in the process of doing is carving out more inner emotional space for yourself, which is closely related to dismantling the influences of early caregivers and family patterns that you know have locked you into a kind of crypt. You are, stone by stone, feeling by feeling, dismantling this inner environment. The thing to remember is how this is bigger than you. It’s about what was done to you, and the ways in which the distant past was imposed on you without your having a choice in the matter. Now you are discovering that you do have a choice, but that discovery is coming at a cost. The cost is going through the feelings, recognizing your situation and taking appropriate action.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Friday and this weekend you get a clear line of sight on some of the material that’s going to come up when Mars stations retrograde on March 1. The information will come across more as an FYI than a warning; more of a ‘to do’ list rather than a ‘do or die’ list. You have time to clear many small matters off of your agenda before Mars stations retrograde, so that you can focus on the more important things when the time comes. Much of what you will be focusing on through the duration of the retrograde are matters of mental and psychological balance. This is what’s called inner work. I suggest you set your life up to accommodate this, as much as possible. I know it’s difficult to have time for anything, though from the look of your charts, you will be drawn into handling some of the deeper issues that have taken up residence in your life, and if you focus on them you will be able to make some adjustments and grow through them. The sooner you start the better.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Jupiter, the official Sagittarius planet, is holding a long opposition to Pluto right now. It’s in a very strong sign, indeed, one of its favorites (Cancer), but being at the end of a long retrograde can feel like having key elements of your life on hold a little longer than you were planning. Meanwhile the opposition to Pluto is putting a focus on the ways in which you must evolve in order to get where you want to be going, so there’s a purpose for the pause — that being your opportunity for focus. To me this looks like taking up the emotional issues, particularly over-dependence and your struggle with independence, in your relationships. What’s the history of this subject, how have you handled it in the past and how are you handling it today? If you are tempted to think that this is an inconvenient time to approach this subject, I would say as an astrologer this is the most convenient time to take up the subject matter in the easiest and most direct possible way.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Do you have the idea that others are acting like selfish, childish brats? Your chart suggests you might have that impression. You might be mistaken, however. I suggest you listen for clues how others perceive you — they may have the impression that all you care about is yourself. This is not a formula for domestic happiness and tranquility. As the Leo Full Moon builds and comes to a peak on Friday, I suggest doing what you can to avoid any kind of showdown, and instead, listen for common ground. The emotional space you share is likely to come in the form of values, your underlying ideas about what is true and necessary. I believe that most conflicts are superficial; so too are most differences of opinion. The solution to any seeming disagreement is to go deeper, below the surface, and see what’s going on down under the deeps of the sea. It’s another world down there.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — I have seen a fear dynamic play out in couples, in particular the fear that someone is ‘too messed up’ to be happy in a relationship. Part of that involves experiencing others (including their partner) as being balanced or happy in contrast to the problems that one is experiencing inwardly. This dynamic is pushed pretty hard in a time when we’re always being convinced that others are more perfect than we are (a form of glamour). And it’s challenging in a time when there are plenty of factors and influences we need to deal with. Yet in our moment of history, there is little inclination to get help with one’s personal material, and a shortage of resources when someone does want to get help. That said, how are you feeling? Are you managing? Are you devoted to your healing? And if you are devoted, how are you expressing that? Don’t go it alone. Say how you feel, and ask for what you need. Open up and allow in the love.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Friday’s Full Moon will give you the gift of profound psychological insight. I suggest you apply it to your life, focus on the people you care about, and take in the information you need about what is motivating them. The chances are you will be right, and if you use that information, you will be able to make better judgment calls how to handle them. There’s so much crisis in the world right now, sometimes it seems like only a Pisces could look at it and not look away. Part of why you have this insight is because you’ve been compelled by various factors to get to know yourself in an unusually deep way. Yet most people squander this knowledge. I suggest you remember that Knowing Thyself is the most significant prerequisite for being able to function in the world, and for helping others. You have to do less than you think. Right now as the Full Moon peaks, I suggest you keep your focus inward, and seek ever-deeper self-understanding. You will have occasions to put that knowledge to the test.

Astrology on the Most Personal Level

Planet Waves

Dominick’s Café, on a rainy morning in Kingston, NY. Photo by Eric Francis.

Dear Friend and Reader:

We are again in one of those moments when the world seems to be coming unhinged — as we’ve gone through this week’s news items, it’s really impressive how much pain and struggle there is going on. That said, there seemed to be some progress on immigration reform and gun control, which if they stick, is nothing less than a miracle. Pres. Obama’s nominee for defense secretary believes we need fewer nuclear bombs. Go figure.

Meanwhile, the astrology is pointing in a distinctly personal and introspective direction. Planets that are prominent in the charts include the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars, as well as a centaur planet called Nessus. This began last weekend with the conjunction of Mars and Nessus in Aquarius, which has gone a long way to bring emotional and sexual shadow material to the surface of awareness, and instigate some real discussions.

Planet Waves

The main event is Mercury making a conjunction to Nessus, which is about learning to speak the unspeakable. Nessus represents all that is denied, and Mercury represents what we think about and communicate to others. We are in an extended moment of truth, where the ice that is caked over the ability to communicate real feelings is, at least for now, beginning to thaw.

Before I get into that, let’s start with Imbolc, which is the Sun crossing the midpoint of the sign Aquarius. That’s exact Monday at 11:13 am EST. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the halfway mark of winter, midway between the Capricorn solstice and the Aries equinox. It’s one of the cross-quarter days, related to Beltane and Halloween. We get a cross-quarter day any time we’re halfway between an equinox and a solstice. They always fall when the Sun is in a fixed sign.

Imbolc is not the beginning of spring; rather, it’s winter gradually losing its hold on the environment up north as the Earth’s angle seems to draw the Sun in our direction. As with all the cross-quarter days, a diversity of holidays are gathered around the Celtic feast of Imbolc (which means “in the belly” or “in the milk,” a reference to being surrounded by darkness). The Catholics call it Candlemas, which actually preserves a link to the original intent of this holiday season — it’s about fire.

Candlemas was usurped by the Catholics from an earlier holiday (as are all Catholic holidays) celebrating the return of Persephone from the underworld, carrying a candle to help her light her way. It’s also associated with (Vesta-like) Brigit, a fire goddess. Lighting the way through the dark is the common theme of this time of year. In modern terms, it’s Groundhog Day, which preserves the early theme of weather divination. This is soon followed by candle-lit Valentine’s Day.

The constellation Aquarius overlaps with the astrological sign by the same name. It’s known to be among the oldest named configurations of stars, and stands “with his foot on the head of the great Southern fish, into whose mouth his waters pour,” according to astrologer and cultural astronomer Catherine Tennant.

Planet Waves
Modern interpretation of Aquarius, from the Thoth Tarot. This is The Star card (Trump XVII) illustrated by Lady Frieda Harris in the 1930s.

She traces the god Aquarius back to Babylon, noting that he rules over a huge area of the sky where are gathered the southern fish, the dolphin, the fish of Pisces, the mighty River Eridanus (the River of Night) and Cetus the sea monster. These ancient waters and their primal creatures were “seen as the source of life, through which the Sun passed during the rainy season.”

In the hands of Aquarius, says Tennant, is the Norma Nilotica, the stick used to measure the waters of the Nile River for the purpose of agriculture — an important indicator of agricultural success, and hence of survival.

In these same rainy days of winter, half a world away, the Celts were busy with agricultural matters of their own: doing the earliest preparations for planting in the coming spring. A feast marked the waning of winter. Germans in Europe and Indians in the New World were taking stock of how much remained of their winter rations. The ability to manage their food supply was critical to their survival through the remaining weeks of cold.

“Prophesy and purification are the recurrent and symbolic themes of the midwinter festivals,” writes Donna Henes in her book Celestially Auspicious Occasions. “The concept of prophesy is drawn from the foresight and faith that spring, in all its verdant glory, is on its predictable way, even amid the hard, white winter. Purification suggests careful preparations for its coming.”

When the Sun is crossing Aquarius, most of our time is still shrouded in darkness, and we remain, for a while, in the belly of the stars of night. We might be tempted to look to the meanings of Aquarius to help understand this fascinating convergence of holidays and themes, which involve containment (whether of fire, by the Vesta-like chevron, of water by an urn, or of humanity in the dark of night).

Yet it seems more appropriate to apply mystical and agricultural folklore back to Aquarius, reminding ourselves that its waters bring purification and moisten the land for the first growths of spring. In the long, dark nights, we’re reminded that we really are in the belly of the stars, gestated, born and living in a mysterious cosmos.

Nessus in Aquarius

All the centaurs address shadow material. Nessus is about the cycle of abuse — in particular, the moment when someone breaks the cycle. As abusive tendencies travel down the generations, there is sometimes someone who says that enough is enough, and really means it.

Melanie Reinhart gives Nessus the key phrase “the buck stops here.” I asked her this week where she got that and she said, “I heard client after client use that exact phrase when describing what was going on in their process, when Nessus seemed to be clearly a significator in the transits — transits ‘to’ or ‘from’ Nessus. I saw many miracles happen, and you know me — I wouldn’t say that lightly or in false hope.”

Planet Waves

I do know her and she would not — I’ve seen the same miracles happen, where people wake up and figure out what’s going on and make a decision what to do about it. Often a process of resolution takes on a life of its own, aided by our least cooperation.

Nessus brings this process into Aquarius. Nessus has been in Aquarius for a number of years, and on Saturday Mars made a conjunction to it. In a sense, it’s a struggle for collective accountability — or for an individual to hold a group accountable. Short of that, this is when one person takes responsibility no matter what anyone may think. Mars is activating the individualism rather than the conformism aspect of Aquarius, which is what it takes.

But it’s not always so easy. Mars is the planet of desire, and desire is often infused with guilt, hesitation and fear. Acting on desire is the very essence of personal volition, so when someone wants to control another person, the thing to do is to corrupt desire.

This is so pervasive we might think it’s normal: someone makes someone else feel guilty for so much as wanting something, or someone. There are many subtle forms of abuse, and most of them involve shame and humiliation. This can reach people so deeply that they feel like they have no right to make a decision, or even to consider doing so. The Mars connection is about reclaiming that privilege — the right to think and want what you want.

Along the way, though, one must encounter the resistance that groups, families, tribes and social networks can put in the way of an individual standing up for his or her right to exist. Once internalized, that resistance becomes a form of personal shadow material that can only be addressed by an individual, and that is where we seem to be now.

Planet Waves
Mariel Hemingway went public recently about the history of abuse, mental illness, alcoholism and suicide in her family. Here, she’s being interviewed by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now! You can hear some of that interview in the latest edition of Planet Waves FM.

There were two examples of this in the news this week, both deeply touching. One was former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords testifying before Congress, calling for tighter gun laws.

Barely able to speak after being shot by Jared Lee Loughner two years ago, she told her former colleagues, with her husband by her side to help keep her steady:

“Thank you for inviting me here today. This is an important conversation for our children, for our communities, for Democrats, and Republicans. Speaking is difficult but I need to say something important. Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying — too many children. We must do something. It will be hard. But the time is now. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you. Thank you.”

Note, Nessus is prominent in her chart, as well as that of the person who tried to assassinate her — they both have it conjunct the Sun (see article from that event here). You could say this was her moment of declaring, “The bullet stops here.” You would think that Congress would be receptive to a former colleague who survived an assassination attempt and in fact several key Republicans with A ratings from the NRA have begun to tip the scales in favor of gun control, coming out in favor of sane measures like background checks for those purchasing weapons.

And Monday, Mariel Hemingway was interviewed about her new documentary, Running from Crazy, by Amy Goodman on her program Democracy Now! She describes the multigenerational pattern of suicide, talks about the alcohol abuse and mental illness in the family, and alludes to the sexual abuse that went on as well.

Planet Waves
Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was nearly assassinated by someone using a Glock 19 with an extended magazine, testified with the help of her husband, Space Shuttle Commander Mark Kelly.

Notably, this film was released at the Sundance Film Festival just as she entered a major Nessus phase in her life — transiting Nessus square natal Nessus. This is happening to everyone born approximately from 1959 to 1962 right now.

Here’s something interesting as well — just now, news floated into my inbox that a new centaur planet has been named. It’s called Orius. It was discovered in 2009 at the Baldone Observatory in Latvia.

In mythology, Orius was killed by Heracles when he tried to steal the wine collectively owned by the centaurs, which was kept in the cave of Pholus. A lot of centaurs got killed that day, and now we know the name of one and what he tried to do.

This is a long story, but here is the upshot: it’s dangerous for an individual to try to take on collective karma. Sometimes it has to happen, but it’s better to work at the personal level — rather than taking on everything, or fixing everything, you are the place where the buck stops.

More Personal Planets Coming

Beginning today (Friday, Feb. 1), we have a new series of events. Let’s take them one at a time. Today, both Venus and Mars change signs. Within one hour of one another, Mars enters Pisces and Venus enters Aquarius (at 8:54 pm EST and 9:47 pm EST, respectively).

When Mars ingresses Pisces, it immediately moves into a conjunction with Neptune. Mars-Neptune is always an interesting, compelling mix. It can work many different ways; it has a wide range of effects, from the most creative to the most toxic. When Mars and Neptune are in any aspect, it’s necessary to exercise your best judgment — especially if the aspect is a conjunction.

Planet Waves
One of the traditions of Candlemas, dating back through many generations of prior holidays, is to put a candle in every window, assuming after you do your inventory that you have enough to get you through the rest of winter. Please be careful of the curtains. Photo by Eric Francis.

Neptune conjunctions, by the way, have the widest orb of influence; Neptune is unusually sensitive to transits and aspects. This is amplified by the whole thing happening in Pisces — notably, this is the first Mars-Neptune conjunction since Neptune entered Pisces (the first of seven in Pisces between now and 2024).

If you have some spiritual awareness, this could be very helpful with things of a more mystical nature. Your dreams might be especially interesting or intense. This is not the time to be playing with the Ouija board or inviting entities into your space. If you are going to drink alcohol, I suggest you stay home, where you have some safe containment.

It can, however, be a fantastically creative time, for art, music, poetry and visioning your life, though what you come up with may take some fact-checking or revision. You’ll need to sift for the gems among your ideas; take notes because anything involving Neptune can be volatile, fleeting or difficult to grasp.

The main event, though, seems to be Mercury making a conjunction to Nessus on Saturday. This feels like a conversation starter — a moment of going beyond being ‘real’ and instead being authentic; a moment of actual truth.

It’s almost always challenging to discuss shadow material, especially when it’s tribal — and it almost always is. So, I suggest you remind yourself that it takes courage to speak up, and to admit anything that happened to you, or that you witnessed. But Mercury conjunct Nessus in Aquarius seems like a moment of finding that courage and speaking up about what you’ve experienced.

Yes, you may feel like you’re blowing the whistle on your family, or like you’re betraying your tribe. What you may really be saying is: enough is enough.

Lovingly,

Tracking the Moon Through the Weekend

The waning Moon is currently in Libra, nearing its last quarter phase on Sunday. A Libra Moon encourages a sense of emotional balance and emphasizes a desire for accord in relationships. We are heading for a New Moon conjunct Nessus and square the lunar nodes on Sunday, Feb. 10. This will be an eclipse-like event, of which we will have more coverage next week.

Planet Waves
Painting by Josephine Wall.

At the time of this publishing, however, the Moon is opposing Eris in Aries. Note whether you experience a moment of feeling as though something within you is fighting to be recognized as separate from and equal to a relationship. Do ‘self’ and ‘other’ actually have to compete in a zero-sum game, or is there room for all of you?

Later in the evening, the Libra Moon trines Mercury and Nessus in late Aquarius. This is going to bring some harmony between your emotions and your mind, and whatever Nessus-type material you’ve been working through lately (see article above, and PW FM). In other words, even if you’re dealing with difficult issues, your head, heart and gut will be sending you the same messages.

On Saturday, Feb. 2 at 7:01 am EST, the Moon ingresses Scorpio. A Scorpio Moon can feel at times deep and erotic, and at other times aggressive, moody and jealous. It immediately trines Mars, Neptune and Chiron in Pisces. You can expect your physical energy to mirror your emotions (and vice versa). If you can harness it all in some creative pursuit, especially one related to exploring or healing some aspect of your sexuality, you should get a green light.

The last quarter (waning) Moon is exact at 8:56 am EST Sunday Feb. 3. This is the Scorpio Moon square the Aquarius Sun, right in the middle of the signs, just after the Moon conjoins Saturn. Watch out for a sense of deadlock on some emotional issue within yourself. Moon-Saturn can alternately feel rather limited and negative, or else offer a sense of depth and responsibility. Since this is in a fixed sign, you may have to choose the latter very consciously if you start to notice the former.

Remember that the quarter Moon is a square, and squares mean tension that requires action to resolve it. When you see a solution present itself (whether for an external project, an inner emotional process or in a group dynamic) use it like a lever against a fulcrum to avoid camping out in any frustration or darker emotions that crop up. That is, ‘just do it’.

Finally, the Moon ingresses Sagittarius Monday, Feb. 4, at 10:45 am EST. This is a fiery, friendly, optimistic, philosophical Moon. Don’t be surprised if you feel the urge to take a new route to work or try a new restaurant for lunch on Monday and Tuesday. With this shift, we move into the Moon’s last phase before the New Moon next weekend, which heralds the Chinese/Lunar New Year — the Year of the Water Snake.

Arkansas Moves to Ban Abortion in a Heartbeat

Arkansas is considering a so-called ‘heartbeat bill’ — effectively, a ban on abortion — that would make getting an abortion illegal after six weeks, before most women realize they are pregnant, and make a felon out of any doctor performing one.

Planet Waves

Hearing the heartbeat would require an invasive transvaginal ultrasound. If one is detected, a woman could not have an abortion, except in cases of rape, incest and if the mother’s life is in danger.

According to the bill, a woman seeking an abortion would not be considered a criminal — yet doctors performing one after detecting a heartbeat would be punishable by up to six years in jail and a $10,000 fine.

The bill was introduced by Republican Sen. Jason Rapert, who believes the bill is necessary because “[w]hen there is a heartbeat there, you have a living human being,” according to a Mother Jones article.

A similar bill was introduced in Ohio in 2011 but was shot down, and a similar bill failed this week in Wyoming because it was considered too medically vague.

The Arkansas bill is believed to have a good chance of passing, as Republicans took control of the Arkansas Senate and House this year. They’ve also declared it an “emergency measure,” which would make it legal the day the Democratic governor, Mike Beebe, signs it.
He has a mixed record on abortion rights, according to pro-choice group NARAL.

It’s worth noting that this bill was approved by an Arkansas Senate committee about a week after Roe v. Wade celebrated its 40th anniversary. As mentioned in the Jan. 18 issue of Planet Waves, Roe v. Wade is the closest thing we have to an Equal Rights Amendment. We’re currently in an era of transforming gender roles that’s described by the cycles of Venus and Mars; it’s imperative to help young women understand that their authority over their own bodies — and therefore over the course of their lives — is at stake.

Majoring in Orgasm, With a Minor in Education

Okay, it’s not actually a course of study, but the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, is offering a workshop this spring aimed at helping its female students achieve more and better orgasms, though you don’t have to be a woman to attend. “The Female Orgasm,” is open to both men and women who are part of the entire university community, and there is no age limit (many students enroll at age 17).

Planet Waves
Yes, you can actually buy one of these buttons.

“As a research institution, we study, publish and educate on a vast range of topics, including human sexuality,” explained Patricia Mattern, a university spokesperson to the online forum Campusreform.org.

Sex educators Marshall Miller and Kate Weinberg, who have conducted similar programs at many universities across the country, will be facilitating the event. They use a variety of techniques to cover everything from answering basic questions to explaining G-spot orgasms and how to have multiple climaxes.

Perhaps even more importantly, the program is set to cover such topics as how individuals can make sexual decisions that are right for themselves, regardless of relationship status; deconstructing the messages women receive about their bodies from family, the media, religion and elsewhere; and how ‘making friends with your body’ relates to being able to experience pleasure.

In Weinberg’s bio, she writes that while taking an intensive HIV/AIDS course in college, she realized how sexuality “is a thing so intimately connected to politics, religion, guilt, expectation, the ways in which we live and are allowed to live. It’s one of those things that seems to explain the world around it.” The current astrology seems to agree.

In Response to Internet Activist’s Death, Anonymous Breaches DoJ

Members of the cyber-hacktivist group Anonymous claimed this week to have infiltrated the Justice Department’s website in retaliation for the prosecution of Aaron Swartz. Swartz is the late Internet freedom advocate who took his own life earlier this month, after undue persecution by federal prosecutors.

Planet Waves

On Saturday, Anonymous said it had breached the Justice Department’s firewall and planned to release government data in response to its treatment of Swartz, according to Democracy Now!

Swartz, who hanged himself just weeks before his trial, was facing a potential sentence of 35 years in prison for allegedly downloading millions of articles provided by the nonprofit research service JSTOR via computers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He believed that these academic articles, which are free for all U.S. university students to access, should also be freely available to scholars around the world.

Just days before Swartz’s death, a longtime friend and mentor of his received word from JSTOR that they had decided to make the articles available to all, but was not able to get the news to him in time. In fact, JSTOR themselves refused to prosecute, and in fact Swartz had lawful access to the whole database because he had a Harvard fellowship. Swartz’s friends and family claim he was the victim of what amounted to severe bullying by the federal government.

In the wake of Swartz’s suicide, federal prosecutors dropped their charges and Democratic Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California has introduced a measure in honor of Swartz that would modify the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act to omit terms of service breaches, which is what he was being prosecuted under.

Swartz — who at just 26 years old had helped to develop RSS and went on to become a co-owner of Reddit — had been instrumental in defeating the proposed SOPA and PIPA bills one year ago, in what amounted to an astonishing show of Internet activism as websites from Planet Waves to giants like Wikipedia went black — that is, shut down — in a show of solidarity.

That online action coincided with the Sun’s last day in Capricorn last year before it ingressed Aquarius, illustrating the Uranus-Pluto square in action with some seriously justice-themed astrology (also covered in this article). You can hear Swartz deliver an address on that victory and the continuing fight to protect Internet freedom here.

Introduction to Monsanto Watch. We are starting a long-planned weekly feature designed to keep an eye on Monsanto, the world’s largest purveyor of genetically modified crops and the chemicals that go with them. Most people have no idea about Monsanto’s long and sordid history — this company, started in 1901, has been trying to kill us all for a long time (read their early history here; I am in the process of assembling their astrological history).

Planet Waves
Illustration by Via Keller / Studio Psycherotica.

Above is a sample of a document from the late 1960s that describes the extent of how Monsanto polluted the whole planet with its deadly PCBs. They admitted the problem — and then determined that the “do nothing” approach (their words) would maximize profits and minimize liability exposure. This is how they do business.

During their peak of Agent Orange production in the 1960s, they dumped a staggering two pounds per day of pure dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD) into a river in St. Louis.
Considered the most toxic known chemical (showing effects at the parts per trillion level), on the level of plutonium, dioxin contamination was knowingly (and therefore intentionally) present in every product released from one major Monsanto factory in the 1980s (read more in my article The Kemner Brief).

Monsanto has pelted humanity with everything from saccharin to the Copper 7 to Nutrasweet to deadly Bovine Growth Hormone. Their active ingredient for Lysol disinfectant has been shipped out soaked in dioxin, with instructions to wash your dog and your baby’s toys with it. Every time you use one of their ‘antimicrobial’ soaps containing Triclosan, you risk getting some dioxin. The company has been a death machine from the get go, and we think that the world needs to pay attention; so we are doing our bit.

Back in April 2012, a Wall Street Journal article on “Monsanto magic” tried to be positive for shareholders but still ended on this note: “As impressive as Monsanto’s technology and growth have been, no company is guaranteed to live forever.” If you follow Monsanto or come across interesting news concerning it, please send it to us at editorial@planetwaves.net. Thank you! — efc / cvs

Will Monsanto’s Aggressive Legal Strategies Be Its Undoing?

Biotech behemoth Monsanto this month reported enormous 2012 profits and its CEO, Hugh Grant, cashed in shares worth more than $3 million. Much of Monsanto’s money comes from its aggressive marketing of genetically modified agriculture products, and associated chemicals. It’s also profiting from what amounts to patent trolling — its prosecution of patent infringement lawsuits against farmers who happen to be downwind from farms that use its GMO products.

Planet Waves
Photo: organicconsumers.org.

Yet, if a current lawsuit, OSGATA et al vs. Monsanto, in the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., is allowed to move forward after a dismissal by a federal judge last February, the company may find that “turnabout is fair play.”

The farmers are challenging Monsanto’s right to sue them for patent infringement. Monsanto’s strategy is to claim patent infringement occurs when winds carrying its GMO pollen from neighboring farms blow the pollen onto fields growing
non-GMO crops or organic crops. Monsanto employees test crops from these fields to verify that variants of its GMO products have sprouted, then brings lawsuits asserting the farmers are using GMO seeds without the proper licensing agreements.

Despite Congress’s enactment of the Declaratory Judgment Act, which gives a group the right to petition for protection from claims of patent infringement from a big company, federal courts have upheld Monsanto’s right to sue. The original OSGATA case was dismissed on this basis; this appeal is attempting to overturn that decision.

“The implications of the suit are momentous. If the D.C. Court of Appeals reverses the dismissal, a process of discovery will be instigated that could unveil a reservoir of information, access to which Monsanto has withheld from public knowledge — both by not disclosing it and by preventing independent research,” said Al Jazeera’s Charlotte Silver.

Attorney Dan Ravicher of the Public Patent Foundation, who is representing OSGATA, believes that if this treasure trove is opened, he can establish that Monsanto’s products are not healthy.

“An invention to poison the people is not patentable,” he said.
And that — combined with growing public pressure in the U.S. to label GMO products — may be the beginning of the end of Monsanto.

Nessus, and Mariel Hemingway

In this week’s edition of Planet Waves FM, I look at the ongoing series of aspects involving the centaur planet Nessus. The next one up is Mercury conjunct Nessus on Saturday, so this is an invitation to keep the conversation going — or to get one started.

Planet Waves

On Friday, Venus and Mars change signs, which sets up the background of the conjunction — there is a palpable shift in the energy happening.

In this edition, I play a segment of Amy Goodman’s interview with Mariel Hemingway and Barbara Kopple, talking about their new film, Running from Crazy. This is about the suicides, substance abuse and sexual abuse in the Hemingway family. Here is Mariel’s chart. Note that she is having a Nessus square and also has just had her Chiron return. I explain these transits in the program.

I also reference several articles, including Tools for the Frontier from the Daily Astrology series, an article by Amanda last week about a Nessus-like dream, and an oldie called How to Be Your Own Lover, which I read from.

Weekly Horoscope for Friday, Feb. 1, 2013 #936 | By Eric Francis

Mid-Aquarius Birthdays

As the Sun reaches its peak in your sign this week, Venus ingresses your sign, reminding you of something significant: live your beliefs with the full momentum of your life. This will do two things: strengthen your faith if they turn out to be worthwhile ideas, and demonstrate that it’s time to change your mind if you figure out they don’t work. What you’re likely to discover is that your faith was well invested and that you really can push a few limits about what you will accomplish if you put that into action. There’s also something about feeling safe and how you might go about that. What the astrology says is, live as if you are safe and see how that works. Safety is a feeling, and you will have that experience by creating space for it, practicing and strengthening it in your day-to-day affairs and your relationships. Your sense of belonging on the planet is not something that’s given to you; it’s something that you must actively create, and you can. Note to Aquarius and Aquarius Rising — your birthday reading is ready. I go into entirely new territory from what I did in LISTEN, covering the ways in which Aquarius itself has been changing and evolving; discovering your sense of mission; opening up your inner life and relationships based on creative exploration. It’s two sessions of astrology plus tarot, and an extended description of your sign. Get instant access here.

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may find excellent company among those others think of as strange. Let yourself be guided by intuition, instinct or the angels — speak to whom you’re guided or gravitate towards. If you have to get over a little bump of fear to do that, and to make contact, all the better. In some ways this is an exercise in trust, and you really don’t have much to lose, especially in the social realm.
However, in today’s chilly version of society, it seems like nearly everyone has inflammations of social phobia, accentuated by the fear of what you might do in the event that something real actually happens. What you want is exactly, precisely, something real. As such, it may be a little strange, having that slightly alien feeling. That’s the idea. If you’re at a party, the person you want to talk to is the one with the pointy ears, the color eyes you’ve never seen, or the unusual scent.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Your professional life continues to be the focus. If you’re experiencing some form of success, this is just a hint of what is possible. But you might consider how you got here: by taking chances, by challenging your own boundaries, by deciding to have the confidence to bring up supposedly taboo subject matter, and by embracing what you think of as your opposite. There’s a finesse to all of this, and for you that has a lot to do with logic. It’s also associated with being able to express yourself. If you’re articulate and you have some respect for the reasoning process, you can cover a lot of ground in territory that seemed impassable just the day before. There’s something else here as well, which is your willingness to face your challenges directly. That willingness builds confidence in you and it’s evidence of your confidence to others. What you may be discovering is that you are more cut out for leadership than you ever thought, and much of that involves being something of a pioneer on the level of ideas.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You may be one of those people who is too smart to have been influenced by religion, though I would propose that you would have to be a ninja-from-birth kind of critical thinker to avoid that. If you’re having any angst at all, particularly a struggle with the past or some psychological pattern, I suggest you go digging on the history of religion in your life and in your family. Getting beyond this is not merely a matter of ‘mental override’. It’s about understanding the ways in which you were influenced by specific ideas that influenced you — including by the values of any atheists or agnostics in your history. You will be able to use logic to get you out of this, though it’s a special kind of logic in that it involves understanding the nature of how you think and why you think that way, not merely the nature of a few specific thoughts. In the end you must have conscious faith in something; it’s a matter of what, and now seems like a good time to find out.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — You’re starting to figure out that you must have a vision for your life, though the even better news is that you’re starting to get one. Sometimes this seems easy and sometimes it seems much more difficult. Recent developments are giving you a clue how much progress you’ve made over the past couple of years, and now you seem to be at a flashpoint. It is essential that you think in terms of what is possible, coupled with your willingness to take the steps to make it actually happen. It’s also vital that you focus on cooperation with others rather than competition — which means casting others in the role of supporter, collaborator or partner. If you allow yourself to have a bias that others are here to help you, you’re more likely to think of them that way. And there’s a pretty good chance it’s true, so you have the odds in your favor here. Keep an eye out for the person who knows how to influence others.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — If any children or young people around you are acting strangely, look at what’s in their environment, particularly their media environment. I suggest that you pay attention to this for the foreseeable future. In many ways the whole thing seems out of control — you cannot walk into a restaurant without being pelted by five flat screen monitors. There may, however, be specific things to look for — games, websites, applications. Nearly all films coming out of Hollywood are designed to manipulate and undermine self-esteem. Then they are impregnated with violence and images of superhuman power. I don’t have kids, but if I did, with rare exceptions, I would not be taking them to the movies for the latest thriller. Don’t come down like an authoritarian, though. Instead, do a survey of the media intake of the kids. Have a clue what it is. You will have a lot more influence if you can add in positive factors: books, music, recorded books and other carefully selected materials that have a purpose besides entertainment.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Be careful what you say, and be mindful as you interpret what you hear. Take conversations slowly, especially at work — there is significant potential for misunderstanding. It’s one of those situations where the more you analyze, the less you may actually know. Meanwhile, passions are running high in your environment, so there’s added potential for things to get weird. Therefore, take a minimalist approach. I would advise against trying to solve anything or fix anyone; this is a moment to adapt and lay low for a few days. It’s definitely not the time to take people on their word, though it’s not an especially great time to doubt them either. It’s an excellent time to put most discussions on hold, sniff around for missing information and see what comes out in the wash. Resist, evade, avoid or eschew your impulse to state your opinion anywhere but in your journal — at least till early next week. Especially at work. Meanwhile, if you’re involved in a matter of personal healing, focus on the mind level first. Don’t take the opinions of others too seriously, till you have your own facts correct.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — People seem to be treating you with more respect these days. It’s as if they have some kind of interest in keeping you as a friend or ally, after experimenting with a diversity of other approaches to your presence. At the same time, you are starting to focus your faith in yourself, your creativity and your longterm vision for your life. The two are working together to point you in the direction of some positive outcomes — especially in relationship situations, which have been something of a tender spot for the past year or so. It’s time for you to take some new risks, and one of them is a creative orientation on your partnerships. I believe that a central question in any relationship is, what are we going to make, as opposed to what are we going to do? Making love is a good start, but I don’t think it’s enough. The idea is more like, what are we going to make with love? All that creative energy wants to go somewhere — you get to decide where.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — This time of year is always a point of reorientation. The Sun is now passing across the backbone of the fixed cross, which includes your sign. The Sun is at the midpoint of Aquarius, where Venus is approaching and Mercury has just been. This is a time to clean and maintain your foundations, to repair cracks and to process through the feelings that are coming up. Note, some of these feelings are ancestral — they involve people in your family much more than they actually involve you, though you’ve inherited the situation. Over the next few days, it’s essential that you not indulge any self-destructive conduct. I would keep alcohol use to an extremely modest level, and I don’t recommend doing anything that changes your mind or feelings anywhere but in the safety of your home. When you’re speaking to anyone, if you hear yourself say anything but the truth, pause and consider why you’re saying what you’re saying. Your integrity is being tested. Honor that test and you will find yourself in a new place.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Your ruling planet Jupiter stationed direct this week, which is a sign that certain wrinkles in your relationships are ironing themselves out. You may also experience a gush of subject matter coming up that was held in reserve or at bay by the retrograde, but I don’t suggest you have all the conversations at once. Give things a week to unfold on their own. There’s a lot of hot astrology coming up in your chart over the next week, and the potential for exaggerated emotional reactions is pretty high. So I suggest you focus on being observant, on listening and on noticing what you’re feeling. Your emotions are likely to be somewhat contradictory at times, so don’t expect them to make sense, or try to force them to. If you take things slowly and gently, the roots of those contradictions will make themselves known. That information will help you, though it’s essential that you not come to conclusions. Rather, be happy with observations that lead you a little deeper into your understanding of yourself.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You may be tempted to say what you don’t like, or to articulate what has hurt you — though I suggest that you keep things positive. When you notice what you don’t want, turn that into an affirmative and state what you want. I know that you have a list of things that you would rearrange if you could, and that the conduct of the human race has you confused at least half the time. The main difference between you and so many people is that you have options, and you’re starting to figure this out. This is the thing to remember: No matter what you like about the world or don’t like about it, you have the power to choose and the choices to choose among. If you’re feeling like you’re boxed in, make a list of your options. Then remind yourself that you can choose. If you have any misgivings about that, then I suggest you note that fact and see if you can figure out who you might be ‘betraying’ by making your own choices.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Over the next few days, Mercury will be conjunct Nessus in your birth sign. This is going to focus some ideas for you, and you may become passionate about them. Let’s start with Nessus, which I’ve been writing about frequently — just check the Planet Waves blog for deeper information about this planet associated with healing abuse and betrayal. On one level, Nessus describes the failure of ethics that we experience, so often associated with sexuality. Your chart suggests you may find yourself feeling obsessed with resolving all that has happened to you — other aspects are adding passionate drive to your experience of life, and a sense of immediacy. Actually what you’re figuring out now has been trying to get your attention for a long time. Certain fixed ideas were getting in the way: beliefs you refused to change, an attachment to your public image and the fear of being less than perfect. These are all a ruse thrown over your fear of simply admitting what is true for you. That’s the place to start. Action comes later.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — As of Friday, Mars has arrived in your sign for the first time in two years. This is bringing your passions to a boil, which were already going at a nice simmer. Everything is likely to feel more vibrant, direct and intense. Deeper truths are likely to come flowing into your awareness. People will respond to you more strongly than they usually do — perhaps attracted, perhaps repelled. This will help you see the world in more vivid contrast. And this is your opportunity to see who and what is around you, and choose based on what you want, and what you observe to be true. You may, however, feel pushed to rush ahead; I suggest you slow down. This, I know, is challenging for someone under the influence of Mars, but the thing is, you don’t really know the environment you’re in, because Mars is conjunct Neptune. The only thing you can really trust is your imagination, and that, for purposes of creativity. In all matters relational, sexual and otherwise impassioned, look closely and listen carefully, including to yourself. Pause and think before you do anything you cannot reverse.

Leo Full Moon on Saturday (and a conjunction)

Dear Friend and Reader:

The Sun, Mercury and Mars are in Aquarius, and the Moon is heading for Leo. That means we will have the Leo Full Moon on Saturday at 11:38 pm EST. The Full Moon is a peak of emotional energy, though with Leo and Aquarius involved, it might be the clear, bold emotional quality of courage, awareness, or the desire to do your thing.

Planet Waves

Mars has been keeping Aquarius hot for a while (Mars arrived on Dec. 25). This transit might manifest as the desire to stand out from groups, or the conscious use of collective opinion to influence an outcome. (Mars in Aquarius was prominent in the chart for Sunday’s official though private inauguration of Pres. Obama.)

A small, meaningful planet named Nessus is also in Aquarius — that’s a longterm visitor (10-year trip or so) and Mars is about to form a conjunction with Nessus on Jan. 26, a few hours before the Leo Full Moon. Nessus is a centaur planet (discovered in 1993, and similar to Chiron) that includes the theme of consequences. It also includes the theme of potentially inappropriate sexual contact.

I think of it as the cycle of karma having its influence — that is to say, it’s an indicator to look at the theme of cause and effect. Aquarius is the sign of groups and collective mentality. This is about cooperation, and it’s also about how several nice people can, collectively, become a jerk.

We may see the emergence of the dark heart of groupthink; you may notice the effects that pressure from peers and social groups has had on your life (a lot more than you think, probably).

Mars conjunct Nessus has an angry, rebellious feeling, yet it might also represent the drive to break away from any group mentality that is not working for you, or that has hurt you in the past. If material comes up, on any level (some might be deeply personal) this is a fine opportunity to seek resolution or healing — but don’t expect others to go along with you.

This may be the individuality piece of the equation; that you seek the support and assistance you need without the need for others to approve of you. This would be especially true if the whole issue is centered on alienation.

Aquarius is also the sign of ideas. As a fixed air sign, it can be the sign of fixed (as in stuck) ideas and the insistence that one is right. Mars conjunct Nessus in Aquarius is a caution to be on the lookout for ways in which ‘being right’ is toxic. It often is; not always, and sometimes it’s a matter of approach. But this aspect is about noticing any way you may insist you’re ‘right’ when you’re really no such thing; you’re merely stuck.

Planet Waves

If you’re noticing that, this is your chance to get unstuck. It’s your chance to rethink, or to actually start thinking. Much of that stuckness may involve what you think other people want you to think, which may be significantly different from your real opinion.

Get clear. Step out. Act in ways that conform to your conscience, not the one that others try to impose on you.

One approach or perhaps antidote to, or opportunity available from, the current astrology is to talk about your taboos. This is the ‘missing thing’ in society — not talking about the taboos of others but rather, your own. When we focus on the alleged petty social transgressions of others, it’s called scandal. This is a way of avoiding being real about our own feelings, desires, conflicts and the ways we don’t personally fit in. It’s a way of participating in all of the suppression that we complain about. Scandal is a way of avoiding truths about ourselves and our collective experience.

At its most creative, grounded and authentic, Mars conjunct Nessus is an image of a bold assertion of one’s own reality, including the ways that we’re influenced by the dramas of scandal and also what is left out of the conversation entirely.

There’s other support for this in the current and developing astrology. One is that Jupiter and Chiron are holding a long square, from Gemini to Pisces. This is about the focused and pointed use of knowledge. Jupiter to Chiron aspects can have a crusading spirit, including an impassioned need to get some form of information out.

Just make sure you check your facts and really account for the validity of your point of view before you go too far with that; Jupiter in Gemini might not care much for accuracy, but Chiron surely does. To my thinking this aspect has two immediate peaks of action — the first is Jan. 30, when Jupiter stations direct, and the second is March 27, when there’s an exact square between Jupiter and Chiron; this is the last of three.

Planet Waves

Mars changing signs from Aquarius to Pisces is reason for care and awareness, though it’s a richly creative aspect. That happens Feb. 1. Soon after, on Feb. 4, Mars makes a conjunction to Neptune. This can be pleasure-seeking to the point of being self-destructive (this is not a good time to drink all the liquor in the house so you can get rid of it and quit drinking, though for sure a few people will try).

It can also be a lavish time for the imagination, though there’s a need for self-control, particularly where the mind enters the fear/paranoia spectrum. Things that are not real can seem real; things that are safe can seem dangerous and vice versa. It would be helpful to know what you’re actually dealing with if your fear suddenly acts up.

You will find out one way or the other when Mars makes a conjunction to Chiron on Feb. 12 — the second conjunction to a centaur in a short time; much of what you experience during Mars-Nessus may start to make additional sense during Mars-Chiron.

The Sun ingresses Pisces on Feb. 18.

Mercury is retrograde from Feb. 23 through March 17. This is the first of three Mercury retrogrades this year that take place exclusively in the water signs; this one takes place in Pisces, the next (during early summer) in Cancer and the last (in the autumn) in Scorpio.

Naturally, this is a comment on learning what we’re feeling — to actually notice and be aware of what we’re feeling. Mercury in these situations is less about thought and more about awareness of emotions. Though Mercury and Venus are currently in airy Aquarius, it’s always a good time to monitor and be aware of your emotional realm.

Much of what motivates you comes from there, so if you want some answers to the elusive question of why (as in, why am I acting this way?) this is where to tune in.

Lovingly,

Hillary Clinton’s Swan Song

Hillary Clinton gave her final performance as secretary of state Wednesday morning, finally providing testimony about the Benghazi incident to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It’s amazing that anyone took her seriously and unfortunate that her only skeptics in the media are on FOX News.

Planet Waves

In that incident, on Sept. 11, 2012, Christopher Stephens, who was the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and three of his guards were killed in an ambush on what is being called a diplomatic mission or consulate. We covered that in detail in an edition titled Not Just a River in Belgium.

Clinton testified first before the Senate foreign relations committee, followed by testimony before the House of Representatives. During the climax of her Senate presentation, Clinton, gesticulating, pounding (gently) on the table, raising her voice to an incredulous pitch and doing her best to cover Obama’s ass, replied to Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who pressed for an explanation of what happened.

A political appointee of the president, she did her best to cover for her boss. “With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans,” she snapped at the senator.

“Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night decided to go kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, senator.”

Did you catch that? It doesn’t matter what happened because it already happened — we just need to figure out precisely what happened so we can do what we must so that it won’t happen again. Just as long as we never quite say what happened.

Planet Waves

Whether you call this doublespeak, triplespeak, chicanery or evasion, the translation seems to be: don’t go there.

In response to the suggestion that Stephens had cabled for additional security support in advance but was not aided by anyone, Clinton said the message never got to her; 1.4 million cables a year are sent to the State Department, all of them addressed to her.

She didn’t mention that her vast staff of analysts processes and prioritizes those cables, as does the CIA in many cases, nor that they would have been keeping a special eye on a hot spot such as Benghazi. Libya had recently ousted its leader, Muammar Gaddafi, after an uprising that began in early 2011.

The chart for her Senate testimony has Pisces rising, with Neptune close to the ascendant and with Chiron conjunct the ascendant to the degree. Neptune so close to the horizon says pay attention for what is not true. Chiron rising says there is something distinct about this, and to pay attention for that distinction. Transcripts of her testimony deserve careful scrutiny.

In September, the week of the attack on the mission, I commented: “This incident, we are told, was sparked off by an American-made video called ‘Innocence of Muslims’, mocking Mohammed as a womanizer and child molester. This was promoted by Koran-burning ‘minister’ Terry Jones and his publicist, an Egyptian expat blogger named Morris Sadek. Word got out that this was not merely a file on YouTube, but allegedly a blockbuster hit film in the United States. This reminds me of the butterfly flapping its wings in the Alps causing the hurricane in Texas.”

Planet Waves

In other words, this came off like a ridiculous, too-quickly thought of, completely implausible cover story for something else. Incredibly, Clinton in her testimony was still claiming that parts of the disproven story with the protest over the video still might be true.

My impression was that all of her testimony was a dance around the truth. Far as I can tell the story is a coverup, most likely for a CIA black operation, involving the purchasing and redistribution of weapons, that went bad. She cannot say that, of course. When the CIA or other powerful intelligence agency tells the president or his staff what to say, that’s what gets said.

I guess that’s how it is, in politics, and so far they have done a good job of deflecting accountability from Obama himself. However, that’s not the job of the news media, which seems determined not to rock this particular boat (like so many others).

The Best Contraception You’ve Never Heard Of

In the lead-up to this past Tuesday’s 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade — arguably the highest-profile legal treatment of women’s reproductive rights — an article was making the rounds heralding what may be the greatest advancement in birth control in decades. And it’s contraception for men.

Planet Waves
Magnified image of a single sperm.

In a relatively simple procedure, researchers have been able to inject a non-toxic polymer gel into each of the vas deferens tubes (which carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra) in a man’s scrotum. Over the next few days, the polymer thickens, lining the walls of the vas deferens — but it does not block the tubes. Instead, the polymer’s positive/negative polarization tears the sperm apart on a molecular level as they travel through the vas deferens tubes on the way to eventual ejaculation.

The gel then remains in place and effective for up to 10 years — with no hormonal disruption to either the man or his partner. (Though it should be noted that if both partners are not completely monogamous, a barrier method such as condoms is still wise to protect against STIs.)

If a man decides he wants to have children after getting the procedure, the polymer can be flushed out by a doctor using a simple baking soda solution. Within three months, full fertility is restored. Oh — and get this: the gel is generally even less expensive than the syringe used to deliver it.

Unfortunately, the low cost is likely a major reason why most people have not heard of this revolutionary technology. Called RISUG (reversible inhibition of sperm under guidance), it has been tested extensively in rats and more recently on men in India, and solid findings have existed since at least 2009. Move over, Occupy Wall Street — it’s time people of both sexes concerned about reproductive freedom make some noise about male contraception, and Occupy Vas Deferens.

Public Commenting Open on Impending Frankenfish Proposal

While the ears of the world waited for the apocalyptic Big Boom last December 21, a quieter — yet ultimately more deadly — boom occurred, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration released its favorable environmental assessment of AquaBounty AquaAdvantage transgenic salmon, otherwise known as Frankenfish. A 60-day public comment period on this assessment ends on February 25, when the FDA is expected to initiate formal approval.

The impending approval comes amid many environmental, health and ethical concerns. What makes Frankenfish different from all other genetically modified food is that its genes were combined in a laboratory from two different animals. This raises questions on the ethics of creating new life forms and the safety of eating them — without labels to identify them. The salmon is just the first of many proposed transgenic animals.

The hazard to wild salmon is ominous. Although AquaBounty insists its salmon will be kept in pens and will be unable to escape into the wild, a study by the National Academy of Sciences found that a release of just 60 GE salmon into a wild population of 60,000 would lead to the extinction of the wild population in less than 40 fish generations. Farmed fish routinely escape into the wild from conventional fish farms.

In a strange twist, AquaBounty’s salmon was evaluated as an animal drug, not as a human food, because the modified DNA is present in every cell of the fish’s body.

“If approved, the AquaAdvantage salmon would not only be the first GE animal approved for human consumption, but also the first animal drug that’s theoretically capable of swimming off into the ocean and reproducing,” according to an Alternet article.

And, since there have been no longterm studies of humans after consuming Frankenfish, scientists have no idea what it might do to every cell of our own bodies.

You can tell the FDA what you think of its findings online here, or sign apetition against the approval here.

What Your Doctor Should Check If You’re of Childbearing Age

Echoing the theme of ending familial and ancestral abuse patterns that the Mars-Nessus conjunction in Aquarius suggests, CNN.com featured a story this week detailing recommendations that all women of childbearing age be carefully screened by their primary care physicians for domestic abuse.

Women (plus children and elderly or disabled people of both genders) can find themselves in abusive relationships at any age, but a panel of national experts has determined that women are particularly vulnerable to abuse during this specific time in their lives.

Planet Waves
“When he controls your life, it’s no longer your life.” Anti-abuse ad from Citizens Against Spouse Abuse.

“We have made significant progress in building the evidence base to effectively prevent violence against women,” said Dr. Virginia Moyer, chair of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, in a written statement. “We now have the primary care methods and the means to help prevent violence against women in their reproductive years.”

Screening for domestic abuse — also called inter-partner violence or spousal abuse — is not easy, and requires perception and sensitivity; for a woman to leave a violent situation often takes time and multiple attempts. The abuse can encompass sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, stalking and even economic deprivation, in addition to physical aggression or assault.

A tremendous amount of abuse goes unreported; hopefully that tide will begin to turn as more and more health professionals make screening a priority during office visits and become more adept at helping women find solutions that work for them.

Leo Full Moon; Mars conjunct Nessus

In this week’s edition of Planet Waves FM, I cover the Leo Full Moon that’s approaching this weekend. This happens simultaneously with the conjunction of Mars and Nessus in Aquarius.

Planet Waves
Brian Eno, left, and David Byrne — two Bulls of a Feather. Listen to their music and you will want to make art.

This conjunction has implications for all kinds of sexual healing subject matter, particularly in the social arena. Much of what we do is in a sense dictated by the supposed opinions (and insecurities) of others, and this conjunction may bring up some of that material. I look at Alice Bailey’s take on the sign Aquarius as well. Here is the page from Alice Bailey about Aquarius.

Later in the program I talk about the Roe v. Wade decision of the U.S. Supreme Court, which I covered in Friday’s subscriber edition. I’ve opened up that issue to pre-subscribers — it’s at the link above.

Our musical guests are David Byrne and Brian Eno, who have released two tracks from their My Life in the Bush of Ghosts project under a Creative Commons license.

Your Monthly Horoscopes — and our Publishing Schedule Notes

The January monthly horoscope was published Friday, Dec. 21. Inner Space for January was published Friday, Dec. 28. We published the January Moonshine Horoscope on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
I recommend reviewing the monthly horoscope at the end of the month. Please note that the longer monthly horoscope is being incorporated into the Friday issue after the Sun has entered a new sign; a new Inner Space is still emailed on the following Tuesday.

Aquarius Birthdays: Mars-Nessus, Desire, Light, Shadow

If you have a birthday anywhere in the neighborhood, you have the Mars-Nessus conjunction in your solar return chart. This is an invitation to embrace your whole self, including the darker shades of your emotions. You must go below the public relations image you have of yourself and recognize that you have many deeper layers and that you’re being invited to focus on what you’re learning there. One question is, how do you deal with desire? Do you feel good about it, or do you go into conflict? There’s likely a mix; I suggest you get to know the diversity of your inner responses. These may relate to circumstances or events from your early environment that were imprinted on you, got lost beneath the surface, and are now coming up for resolution. Meanwhile as the year develops, you’re likely to feel increasingly passionate about who you are and what you believe. This is a real breakthrough for you, though remember that you’ll probably run into moments of “the brighter the light, the darker the shadow.” Move through the shadow consciously and you will keep returning to the light, which is the faith in who you are.

Note to Aquarius and Aquarius rising readers: I will have your birthday reading next week. Till then I suggest you check out your reading in LISTEN, the 2013 annual edition of Planet Waves.

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for February 2013 #936 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may find yourself drawn into social environments, though I suggest you take a strategic approach — spend only as much time there as it takes to meet your objective. That might include meeting the one person you know you were ‘supposed’ to meet, having one conversation, making a cameo and moving on, or hanging out in the back room during your own party. I say this for two reasons, besides the fact that the social realm can be a waste of time, energy and aspiration. One current reason is you need to be careful of group dynamics, and conscious when you’re in their midst. I would encourage you not to surrender your power to a group. Another is that small shifts in trajectory will take you in significantly different directions from the one you’re currently moving in, and it’s necessary to be aware of when you feel that change. Last is that you have deeper pleasures waiting for you than those you can have in public, hence, the social realm is merely a means to something better, and that something better is the thing you want. Part of creating it will involve setting up the environment for it to manifest; the idea that comes to mind is containment, a kind of world apart. Make sure that your home is prepared, with various libations and the implements of pleasure (soft lighting, clean sheets, phones disconnected, suitable music) and then go with the flow.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Your charts indicate some unusual progress in your career, though if you’re part of an organization, remember that you’re not in this alone. I suggest that your real success is about being a positive, professional influence on the people around you as well as on the creative flow. There’s something about understanding the nature of how choices and actions turn to consequences, and the ways that process can be intervened in early on to create better outcomes. That’s another way of saying be proactive and what, to you, may feel like vigilant. If you’re working with others in their leadership capacity, remember that you have extra influence because of that contact; use it judiciously. The theme of this moment is that it’s not all about you, and in connecting with that, you may discover a realm of personal satisfaction that you’ve never felt before. Many people fear that they will have to ‘give themselves up’ to be part of something larger than they are, though if that’s true, then there is some other problem. Your current astrology is about discovering, encountering and fully engaging who you are, within a context. If you use your sense of perspective and maturity to see that context, you may notice that you have the sensation of being a visitor, not just to this particular situation but to the world itself. The nice thing about being a visitor is that you can exchange a sense of ownership for a sense of stewardship. I think you will like it.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Take care handling your professional affairs this month. Your chart indicates the possibility of some authentic success or breakthrough, particularly in matters where your creative life intersects with your work life. You could discover a bold, vivid sense of purpose. However, if you are not 100% impeccable on matters of communication, that will come back to you. Therefore, begin now making sure that your intentions are precisely aligned with your words. Keep people up to date about what in your life influences them. I suggest you be careful about any tendency you may have to yield to your doubts and change your mind. I know that change is in the nature of the universe and you in particular have a mental state that’s constantly on the move. Often you decide that there’s something that just looks like it might be better. However, you and the people around you will benefit from your consistency through any relatively brief phase of doubt, challenge or adversity. Being a pro means sticking with things through moments of uncertainty, and being true to your vision. Therefore, trust your original intentions, and I strongly suggest, honor your original commitment, at least through the Mercury retrograde from Feb. 23 through March 17. You may have the sensation of swimming upstream during this phase, or meeting some inner resistance, though the real rewards are on the other side of this event, if you give yourself the gift of consistency.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Some of the most appealing people you meet this month will resemble you the least. As one born under the sign Cancer, familiarity is something you treasure, understandably enough. I suggest that this month you place an enhanced value on what is different, interesting and which challenges your emotional perspective. For example, if you have a tactile approach to contact, or if you like affection demonstrated openly, you may experience some unusual pleasures from someone who takes a more detached approach. Overall, actually, a bit of detachment would be a good approach; I suggest that you sidestep any urge to make a ‘permanent’ bond with someone at this point. The wheel of your life is spinning pretty quickly, and there’s still no telling where it’s going to stop. Therefore, this is a good time to place a high value on your freedom of movement and your freedom to choose. Leave your options open — particularly if you feel pressured to make a decision by your friends (or by some other social pressure) to make a commitment you don’t feel right about making. It’s not always obvious when these kinds of influences are applied, or when we’re falling for them; I suggest you pay careful attention. The idea here, as I’ve suggested, is to leave some options open for the near future, when many other options are likely to manifest. Chances are you’ll discover that you can have worthwhile experiences in the moment, without clinging to them.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Don’t be too hard on yourself, and make sure that you depend on the presence of others in your life to take care of you as much as you take care of them. They are there and they are willing to help. However, don’t expect anyone to read your mind. Be as clear as you can be about what you want and need. This may bring up some interesting emotional dynamics for you. These in turn may include various shades of wondering whether your environment really is friendly, whether you can trust people to support you, and so on — most of which have no reality in the present, but are more like relics from ancient history. It can be challenging to see these relics for what they are, as they tend to show up in consciousness as something real and immediate. It’s just not always obvious that they are some kind of memory fragment bubbling to the surface, pretending to be real now. The thing to watch out for is projection: for example, ascribing your own fears to someone else. You may need to be vigilant about claiming what you own, so that you can be clear about who others really are and what they are offering you. If anything gets in the way of an authentic exchange, check for projection. If you can keep this boundary clear, an unusual alignment that happens around the 10th of the month may represent a meaningful turning point not just in one relationship but in how you experience all relationships.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — The planets seem aligned to reveal just how much someone in your life means to you, despite any challenges that may exist in the relationship. The situation looks like the perfect setup for healing, though if you miss that particular point (for example, by getting caught in any drama, or by misinterpreting someone’s desire for you as a form of aggression), you may find yourself in an unnecessarily complex situation. It will be helpful if you use your intuition and anticipate someone’s needs in advance — or use your experience with them and remember where they are coming from. It’s not up to you to fix anyone, but it will serve both your purposes and theirs if you hold open the space for their emotional process. This may feel like you’re going against the grain of your personality, though that’s exactly what you need to do for the benefit of making space for your own emotional process. By offering your empathy to someone you care about, you’re learning to offer your empathy to yourself. This really is a case of ‘you cannot give what you do not have’. In this situation, trust will be one of the most meaningful forms of empathy, including allowing the space for someone to change their mind a few times without deciding that they are trying to deceive you in some way. I don’t think that’s true; there are deep, potentially ambiguous feelings involved, though this does not dampen your love in any way.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Your creativity may, at the moment, be in service of something else, something besides your personal creative aspirations. From the look of your solar chart, that could work well for you, as a way of deepening your talent, establishing yourself professionally and as a satisfying way to express yourself. Creativity is often confused with something personal. At times, that is true, though this attribute is over-emphasized in our romanticized, glory-oriented notions of what it means to express oneself. You are playing a pivotal role within some organization or group structure. Your devotion is providing stability to guide others around you through various everyday challenges and the occasional unusual challenge. This is a situation where the more you put in, the more you will get back, though you don’t have to think of it that way; rather, the more you put in, the better things will go, for you and for everyone. If you maintain awareness of how there are certain challenges inherent in human nature, you will see the way those challenges can be subverted, minimized or even resolved through creative thinking. You seem to have ideas that are ahead of the crowd or the curve, and I suggest you not hold back. Say what you’re thinking. Be clear when you notice a problem, even if you don’t have a solution for it; your mere acknowledgment of the issue will set the creative process and the group mind into motion. But that’s not enough; make sure you follow through.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — You’re headed for a passionate month, though you’ve likely already noticed this developing. The sign Pisces, one of the most dependable sources of pleasure in your life, is gradually filling up with planets, which will reach a peak in the coming weeks. You may find yourself taking emotional and erotic risks you’ve only dreamed of, though never imagined you could make real. This is a healthy, creative place for you to hang out. I would caution you about one thing, though, which is a potentially slippery aspect of emotional communication that might appear late in the month. No two humans ever agree on everything. It’s up to us to find and honor the common ground that we might share. You will be able to help matters considerably with your willingness to listen, and to really understand where someone else is coming from. This will help you identify the mutual space you can share with someone, based on actual intimate knowledge. Remember that you have more flexibility than you credit yourself for, and more than you generally like to offer. I suggest you go the whole distance being generous with yourself. The pleasure you may share in this time of your life is a luxury and a privilege, though some would say it’s a basic human need. These things all may be true, and you can still offer your life to the improvement of the human condition, starting with the people you care about the most.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — What you think and how you feel are related, though they are two different things. Listen to both your thoughts and your feelings and you’ll get a dialog going, and get closer to a deeper level of personal truth. If you can reach that level of awareness of what’s actually real for you, you will discover that it’s a lot easier to get along with others. Said another way, honoring your inner reality opens up a capacity for intimacy that would decidedly not be there otherwise. Once you’re clear with yourself, any ambiguity that someone else may feel is a lot easier to work with. Once you have that inner dialog going, it becomes easier to set priorities that apply both in the world that exists within your personal space, and the bigger world outside your home. Speaking of, you are currently in contact with what is, in truth, a significant professional goal. You may doubt your ability to fulfill this one, and as the astrology has been developing, it tends to appear and then disappear from your radar. I suggest that you put this into manual mode. This particular goal may seem to fade away, though that’s an illusion; it will be back soon enough, and I would urge you to focus on it even when it’s not a priority knocking on your head all the time. Part of the sense of relief of not having it annoy you is the feeling of not being up to the task, though I assure you that is not true.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You have a rare opportunity to both tidy up your finances and take a significant step toward increased revenue from your profession. As for the tidying up, this is a matter of intention, discipline and structure. In the current version of the world I recommend that anyone serious about earning money from professional activities get a professional accountant on their team. Money flows toward structure. But it also flows toward purpose, and this is a time to focus your purpose. It’s not a time to drift and see what the future may hold; it is, to say it simply, time to get real. There is a purpose you are here to fulfill, and though you may live a while, you’re not going to live forever. That’s part of honoring the fact that things take time to develop and generally do not develop ‘on their own’. What you are doing seems to require actual planning, as well as cooperation and the cultivation of a niche market of some kind. It also seems to depend on the involvement of friends or associates with more experience than you have. To benefit from that knowledge base, you will need to open the side of your mind that is not inquisitive for its own sake, but rather focused on learning toward a specific goal. This is a new method of gaining understanding, one that may make you feel submissive to your subject matter for a while. I would rate that as a positive development.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Remember what is the most meaningful to you. You might forget, or take it for granted. Who you value, what you value and what ideas you hold dear are worth not only contemplating, but acting on. Love in any form is an active process, though as frantic as the world is (and as your world gets at times), what you crave is love in action. I would add that this is not a magical process, but a human experience of making your way through an uncertain world; it’s the very opposite of taking anything for granted. In this spirit, I would propose that for you, failure is a means to success. Willingness to make mistakes is a key element of what is called ‘correct action’ that can lead to a good, whole and wholesome destination. You are a person who loves ideas, though fully engaging in the beauty of being a creature of blood and flesh and feelings is essential to your participation in the human family right now. Spirit is our home, though you are an incarnation, and that has a purpose — to embrace the complexities and challenges of existence rather than to avoid them in any way, and that includes embracing what you care deeply about but which in some way challenges you. You’ve probably thought of all of this before, though in my reading of the planets, now is a poignant moment for getting it from the realm of theory to that of tangible reality.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — An unusual alignment is gathering in your sign, which indicates an atypical, as in truly special, time in your life. Find a balance between moving with the flow and guiding yourself toward the destinations that you choose — and note that choosing is key. You may be tempted with moments when pushing the river seems like the thing to do, and others when drifting seems like the thing to do; consider this consciously so you do the right thing at the right time. Mars, Mercury and Chiron (among other influences) in your sign are saying focus on what you want, who you want and what you want to create. For a while you may feel like you are merely fantasizing, or asserting yourself into an energy field that is not exactly responsive, but I would urge you not to fall for that. You’re in one of the most workable environments you’ve ever been in, with lavish resources available to you. Rather than getting caught in the opinions or intentions of others, take what they say under advisement and allow it to inform you without any obligation to act. The complications of others are not yours, and you provide plenty of help, guidance and support merely by being yourself. By the time the Sun ingresses your sign on the 19th, you will feel the strength of your presence on the planet, and recognize that you’re an attractive, creative force, as well as one to be reckoned with.
