The important thing with love is that you be able to receive it as well as to offer it. This is the essence of many seemingly different issues, though it’s all a masquerade ball. To love is to be able to accept love, because that describes openness, vulnerability and a measure of self-value. Beware of situations where you give yourself emotionally to some end that you don’t understand. Rather, as Paul McCartney said in “Hey Jude,” let it out and let it in.

Current astrology speaks of building pressure and potential conflict in at least a couple of different ways: Mars lighting up the Saturn-Pluto conjunction, and Monday’s Sagittarius Full Moon. Yet there are always options for how to handle confrontation-themed astrology; and the more aware you are of the dynamics and energetic currents at play, the freer you are to adjust your mindset and make choices that may ease the way, rather than exacerbate situations that are flaring up.

Today, when the Moon enters Sagittarius, you may notice the Full Moon effect starting to pick up the pace. This could come in the form of an increased yearning to be free of certain restrictions (especially those imposed by others), or to focus on your own long-term, big-picture callings in the face of others’ chatter and seemingly split focus. Yet in the early part of the day, the Moon conjoins the asteroid Ceres and makes a trine to Chiron in Aries.

It may help in any stuck-feeling situations to remember that there is always something more to learn from someone if you’re curious enough, and that standing out as who you are can actually support the process. It just may take a little extra tact, or an infusion of optimism, to navigate this new territory. Fact-checking your beliefs about what’s being said and what someone means could be another essential tool through the weekend.

It’s important that you feel free to pursue your path of self-development without being stifled by other people’s prejudices or agendas. Be yourself. Just now, you have access to multiple perspectives to aid in determining your direction.

After the Moon enters Aries later today (2:32 pm EDT), keep tabs on your more impulsive urges and your temper. True, you may simply find yourself extra motivated to get moving on a personal project. However, since the Moon will be aspecting several sensitive objects early in the other cardinal signs (Cancer, Libra and Capricorn), there’s the potential to feel some pressure or internal tension — and it might not come through in entirely conscious ways.

At the same time, the Sun opposite retrograde Ceres in Sagittarius looks like a suggestion to notice who’s nourishing your intellectual and spiritual life (and how you may do the same for them). Is there any sense of confrontation in this relationship? It’s not uncommon for those who teach us and push us to grow to also provoke challenging responses from us. How do you find yourself communicating with this person most effectively? With Mercury (the planet of thinking and communication) aspecting Neptune currently, taking time to be sure you’re formulating your thoughts and words carefully and accurately should be helpful.

Stride out fearlessly in your own truth. You have the power to decide for yourself where you belong, and among whom, regardless of what other people may suggest. The point is to ensure you are free to pursue your desires without feeling hemmed in or made to hold back any part of your essential honest self. Associate mainly with those who are inclined to afford you that independence in its entirety.

It’s possible today may bring an encounter with some kind of mentor-figure (which could also be a maternal type), if you have not already had an experience this week that fits that description. This is suggested by an opposition between Mercury in Gemini and retrograde Ceres in Sagittarius. Given the inward- or backward-looking condition of Ceres, you might also consider past guidance you’ve received from such a person that may be useful again now.

Conversations of a particularly intellectual and spiritual or philosophical nature appear to be most likely — though the general topics of travel, higher education could also be in the mix. The thing to notice is an element of the interaction being nourishing — certainly for yourself, but perhaps for all involved — and don’t underestimate the sustenance offered by fun for its own sake. Watch for the small miracles of everyday life; the kind that seem to appear simply because your eyes are open and your intuition is in the ‘on’ position. It could be that you missed something along these lines at one point; catching it this time around could prove useful.

Mars, Chiron and You

By Amanda Painter

As Mars makes its way through Cancer — and thus through a series of potent aspects to many of the planets defining much of current life — it reaches a key marker today: its exact square to Chiron in Aries. This event would have a personal feel to it no matter what. But with Mars in emotional, protective Cancer, and with Chiron in a sign Mars rules (one related to the concepts of self and identity), there’s a picture of taking things very personally indeed — perhaps in ways that could feel challenging.

As has been mentioned elsewhere on Planet Waves recently, western society (particularly the U.S.) has Mars issues. There’s a tendency to default to aggression when fear is encountered, and most people seem to be afraid of a lot these days; for sure, there are a great deal of scary things in the world, and mainstream media often appears crafted specifically to emphasize that fact.

Yet, in addition to all the things ‘out there’ to be afraid of, many people harbor tremendous doubts about what’s inside of them: their desires and sexuality, emotions, needs, dreams, gifts; many doubt whether there’s really anything at all inside that’s deserving of love and acceptance.

In the last year or two I’ve witnessed a few situations in which someone received the affirmation that they are enough, just as they are. Their response to that affirmation has generally been emotional: an outflowing of relief at being seen fully, mixed with grief over the years of feeling disconnected from a sense of wholeness, mixed with disbelief that the affirmation could possibly be true, given how long it has not felt true.

Those emotions could also come out as aggression if someone is too far from a place of being able to hear, feel or even glimpse the message. Anyone who does not feel free to express deep emotion has the potential to lash out in defense of those vulnerable, terrifying parts of themselves.

Watch for insights regarding your vocation or mission in the most profound and spiritual sense of those terms. You may experience a flash of intuition, which reveals a pattern underlying various events and features of your life. This is likely to be drawing you in a specific direction in terms of what to do next. Verifying whatever information you receive will be useful; meanwhile, keep your mind open, and leave room for more details to emerge gradually.

With Venus and Vesta in Aries making a trine to Ceres in Sagittarius, there’s some serious goddess fire on tap. Your inner flame — be it creative, sexual or simply your joie de vivre — may feel like a warm, nourishing undercurrent to the day. Perhaps try tending to it directly (such as with some kind of solo activity, though sharing the love — or lust — might feel similarly enriching; just bear in mind that Venus in Aries can come on a bit strong).

If you want to take things to the proverbial next level, you might consider how this energy connects to your overall healing journey. The centaur Chiron is conjunct the asteroid Salacia today, focusing the issue one way or another. How is your awareness being drawn to some facet of your sexual experience, or your sense of identity as a sexual-yet-spiritual being? Notice your feelings about it, and take some notes or make some art in response. Chiron tends to reward documentation, and Aries is the sign of ‘get started’. So what are you waiting for?

Honor your remarkable strength and your ability to persevere amid the peaks and troughs of life. What truly feeds you, mind, body and soul? Do you feel like you have a split opinion, or opposed desires on that score? Mars in Gemini opposite Ceres in Sagittarius suggests you might be faced with someone or something that could fill this role — perhaps even in a mentor-like or motherly way. Depending on which option in your mind they (or it) fit, it might be more or less clear how to proceed. Perhaps start by asking lots of questions; listen carefully to what gets said (or shown, or demonstrated) and what goes unsaid. With Mars also moving into a square with Neptune in Pisces, there’s a strong imperative to check facts — and to be as honest with yourself as possible. That can get tricky if you’re feeling conflicted, or if what you want runs counter to what someone else wants. Go slowly if that’s the case. It’s okay to be wrong — we’re all just human beings trying to figure everything out, after all. So if you need to make a correction, do so sooner rather than later, and with genuine sincerity.

Focus on tying up loose ends before moving on to the next phase of your life. You can make your journey much smoother the less you leave unfinished; it can take energy to deal with matters you would prefer to be over, especially if they crop up unbidden. Sorting this out includes asserting your freedom from other people’s agendas. You can learn a lot by noticing who is willing to respect your boundaries, and who isn’t.

As the Pisces Sun moves into its square to Jupiter in Sagittarius (exact tomorrow), you may want to give yourself a reality check. Are you sure you’re being completely honest with yourself about a certain matter — especially something about yourself, which you may be unknowingly expressing? The flip side of this aspect is that it’s offering significant creative and spiritual energy right now. How will you use it to move something forward in your life?

Also, today Ceres in Sagittarius opposes Juno and the object Altjira in Gemini; Altjira was named for the Aboriginal creator god of the dreamtime. Overnight into tomorrow, the Gemini Moon will sweep through this aspect pattern. You may wish to pay particular attention to your dreams tonight. Anything related to your relationship needs, communication with a partner, certain friendships, or mentorship could try to get your attention in subtle, subconscious ways — or might be reflected back to you by someone else. Between this aspect pattern, Sun-Jupiter, and Mercury being retrograde in Pisces, it may be wise to fact-check what seems to be intuition before you barrel forward with it.

Thinking Forward, Crossing a Threshold

By Amanda Painter

How are you feeling now that we’ve exited The Eclipse Zone? Or, perhaps I should ask: how are you thinking, and what are you thinking (and communicating) about? I ask, because this morning Mercury leaves Capricorn and enters Aquarius — which means that it steps into the position the Sun just held during the lunar eclipse that began the week.

Not only does this ring the bell of the eclipse degree, it also activates all the same slow-moving minor planets and points that were part of the eclipse aspect pattern (you can review them here).

Are you noticing a more intellectual angle to a subject that was speaking to you on a more emotional or unconscious level a few days ago, or which you found yourself expressing outwardly in some other way? I don’t know for sure that this is how Mercury’s activation of the eclipse territory will manifest, but it’s an idea worth playing with today.

That said, note that Mercury is moving fairly quickly right now; it’s going to breeze through the eclipse degree over the course of today. Taking notes on what enters your awareness might be useful.

We also have a few elements in the astrological landscape that appear to offer useful energy for moving forward with whatever the eclipses brought into view. For one, Mars in Aries is making a trine to Jupiter in Sagittarius (exact tomorrow).
