You were born on Independence Day, and for you, the only meaning of that word comes from having your own resources, control of your finances, and the motivation to be a success. You simply must tap your drive, and at the same time, you must be wise with your resources. There’s the clear potential for having plenty of motivation and desire for success, and then making bad choices financially. This is not necessary. You must fully inform yourself, and triple-check your sources; and put a delay in between you and any major moves you want to make.

We’re now entering the ‘storm’ phase prior to Mercury stationing retrograde on July 7. This is the 2-3 days on either side of a station retrograde or station direct, when communication, technological gadgets and life in general can often seem especially disruptive. If you can slow down your general pace of thought and action, you may find it easier to navigate any hiccups you encounter in the next several days. If you’re in the U.S. and celebrate Independence Day, please be especially careful with fire, alcohol, travel and your temper.

Several of today’s exact aspects appear to describe a certain theme: how you experience and express caring, especially when you meet challenging situations. For one, Venus in Cancer is making an opposition to the centaur Pholus in Capricorn. When faced with a potentially out-of-control situation, what do you do with your concern about it? Do you let yourself spiral off into worry, or do you figure out how to meet it with empathy-in-action? The same questions apply if you’re confronting the result of generations’ worth of cause and effect that have rippled down through the years to this present moment. You have a choice in how you channel your emotional responses.

The Cancer Sun opposite the centaur Hylonome suggests a similar dynamic: some form of caring self-expression in response to a “cry of the poor,” particularly when that cry is emerging as a result of institutional (such as governmental) systems, policies and structures. If you’ve been watching the news, you know there are very real opportunities for this. Meanwhile Mars, newly in Leo, is conjunct Varuna — an object that carries the keyphrase “the great equalizer.” True courage — which, like the word’s root, comes from the heart — may be the greatest equalizer of all. As Bayard Taylor once wrote, “The loving are the daring.”

Today’s total solar eclipse in your birth sign is offering you the power to make the changes you need to create in your life. Do not be nervous. Do not be daunted. Rather, see what choices you have, and make some decisions. The most significant among these is the one about being wholly and entirely committed to your own cause. Nobody can do this for you. Yet it seems you are moving yourself from within. This is quite literally inner movement, a shift, a realignment that brings you closer to yourself than you’ve been in many, many moons.

Today is the Cancer New Moon and total solar eclipse. The New Moon is exact at 3:16 pm EDT (3:16:06 UTC); serennu.com lists the peak of the eclipse about seven minutes later. If you have not yet asked yourself what patterns you might like to shift over the next six to twelve months, this would be a good time to give that some thought. Better yet, what kind of energy can you put toward those intentions via some tangible action? The more you can frame your vision in positive terms — that is, what you’d like to cultivate more of, the gifts you’d like to offer the world, what you simply love doing — the better.

Note that this eclipse is occurring on the Cancer-Capricorn axis. This puts it into contact with the Saturn-Pluto conjunction that will be exact in January, and which we’re already experiencing. It’s possible that decisions and changes you undertake in the next couple of weeks may develop in particularly noticeable ways by then; for now, though, it’s likely that it is enough to be conscious of your present moment. Notice how the current is flowing in your particular bend of the river; this can make it easier for you to paddle with it rather than against it as you keep your eyes on your desired destination. (You can read more about the eclipse chart here and here.)

In today’s eclipse chart, the asteroid Vesta is in a conjunction in Taurus with an object named Albion (which used to be referred to as 1992 QB1 on Planet Waves). This suggests there’s some grounded persistence available that you can use to cross some kind of threshold — which may be sexual or body-related, or associated with your core values, or could also apply to your financial or material resources. Moving through this doorway may require you to actively make and hold space for it. Think in terms of a central point of orientation, rather than keeping it on the periphery.

Normally I would never recommend that anyone scale back their ambitions or even suggest to keep them realistic, though your chart is sending you the “reality check” message. The sticky point is knowing what you want, rather than investing considerable energy into a goal or ideal that turns out not to be the thing that really gets you going. Keep exploring. Keep asking questions and, most of all, persist in your experiments — without making a major commitment. At just the right moment, your project will pick you.

In case you have not heard yet, we’re heading toward a total solar eclipse on Tuesday (visible primarily in parts of South America and the Pacific). That occurs with the Cancer New Moon, and is the first in a pair of eclipses; the corresponding partial lunar eclipse occurs two weeks later. One of the best ways to use these events to your advantage is to set your sights on where you’d like to direct your life, and then go about doing the things you love and want to do more of, along with activities that relate to your goal.

You don’t have to wait until the eclipse proper to set things in motion, though, and you may find it helpful to focus on this process beginning now. Don’t worry about ‘getting it right’ or having a perfectly clear vision for where you want to head (though if you do have a specific vision, definitely work with it). Eclipse weeks can act a bit like an alternate dimension when unusual opportunities crop up; yet their energy also unfolds in subtle, gradual ways over the following months. Part of that unfolding could include discoveries that shift your sense of where you want to go and how to get there. In other words: it’s okay to hang a little loose, and to feel like a work in progress. Everyone is, after all.

It would appear you’re fluctuating between two states of mind. In one, you really need to rouse yourself in order to push toward your goals; and in the other, you’re barrelling ahead at such a fast pace you’re liable to break the sound barrier. Finding a happy medium may seem like a challenge; the first thing to do is catch yourself when in either mode, and figure out what’s going on. Then plan out a pace that’s healthy and works for you. You don’t need to get it perfect every day; persistence is almost always a better friend than speed.

With the Moon in Taurus, your TGIF feelings could have you inclined to take the day at a leisurely pace. If your job allows for that, great. If not, it’s possible the Moon’s contact with Saturn in Capricorn will offer just the disciplined work ethic you need to keep plugging away until all the items on your task list are checked off. Some Neptunian influence could filter through in the form of especially imaginative or beautiful inspirations along the way.

Speaking of Neptune in Pisces: the ongoing square it’s receiving from Jupiter in Sagittarius remains a reminder to keep checking with reality as you formulate any dreams, schemes, or far-off, grand-scale plans. There is reason to be discerning in your dealings with others, particularly when your ideals are part of the conversation. Yet at the same time, the desire to help may be strong right now. You might feel tested — even thwarted — as you try to put your loftier convictions into tangible action, but that does not mean you’re wrong in doing so. It simply could signify that anything truly worth doing is worth making an effort to accomplish.

Caring in Action: the Cancer Eclipse

By Amanda Painter

Dear Friend and Reader:

Eric wrote at the beginning of the week about today’s Sun-Chiron square, and the collective healing needed to our inner masculine/yang sides. Then I looked at the chart for the July 2 Cancer New Moon and solar eclipse, and started thinking about the daily assaults on our empathy and capacity to care that are being made by the daily news.

And it all cascaded together in my perception of what amounts to the ongoing psychological and physical torture of immigrant children separated from their families and being held in detention at the U.S. border. I’ll get to the astrology in a moment.

I’ve been seeing a lot about this in my Facebook feed and my email inbox. The strongest recurring theme, however, is an overwhelming sense of paralysis: not knowing what we can do; wondering ‘why isn’t anyone organizing a mass protest?’; asking ‘who is organizing something I can join with?’; feeling completely at a loss regarding which actions will help and which might actually make things worse.

If you want to be trusted, first resolve to be trustworthy. That means knowing what you want and how you feel, and expressing that honestly with everyone. You will earn other people’s confidence as they notice you being consistent and handling challenges with maturity. You don’t have to get it right all the time — just keep aiming in the direction you need to go, and be prepared to admit to and repair any errors or oversights along the way without being told. Such an ethos is a sure sign of responsibility.

Notice whether anyone you interact with today is reflecting familiar familial patterns back to you. This could be especially prominent in the workplace, but any situation with another person has the potential. The Cancer Sun is opposite a minor planet called Quaoar, an indigenous creation deity associated with dancing the other deities into existence. You might think in terms of rhythm: how have your ancestors ‘danced’ through life? Do you recognize any of the steps happening around you?

Venus in Gemini is also exactly square Neptune in Pisces today, with Saturn in Capricorn in contact with both. If you can see the relationship between your spiritual and material needs, what do you need to do to build your life on both equally? How is your innate idealism helping you along, and in what ways is it a distraction or a red herring?

If you’re feeling inclined to lots of fantasizing, and those fantasies center on a partner or someone you have your eye on, be aware there’s real potential to over-idealize them currently. Do a reality check; pay attention any time you’re tempted to gloss over their statements about who they really are and what they really want. Notice whether your ideas about them match up with what they say and with their actions. You have the potential to make some breakthroughs in your understanding if you’re realistic about what you’re doing. That could require continual small adjustments.

You’ve been through some unusual events the past year and a half, by which I mean on a lifetime scale. The thought of another year may be filling you with a sense of both optimism and some concern about repeat performances of some challenging situations. You are well past most of them, though one particular scenario involving your family will benefit from your sustained attention. Do not get dragged in; take it to therapy. It’s time to learn this lesson and move on.

Myths involving both Mars and Eris don’t get a lot of airtime; usually we hear about Mars on his own (whether as fighter or wooer), and Eris on her own (sowing subversive discord with the golden apple that catalyzed the Trojan War). Yet Mars and Eris were siblings, and she is said to have accompanied him on the battlefield, which gives a major clue to their shared energy. Today the planet Mars in Cancer squares Eris in Aries, the final stage of this season’s often-challenging (and at times combative) Mars aspects.

Could this square be interpreted as a sort of sibling rivalry — possibly for someone’s attention? Do you feel as though some facet of yourself is jockeying to be expressed more strongly than another? Or like you have dual urges: to be direct and assertive on the one hand, and to be indirect and passive-aggressive on the other? Is some situation triggering a sense that your identity or security is being threatened?

Even though Mercury in Cancer is right in the thick of it, and also square Eris, it may hold a key to navigating these dynamics. Consider speaking in “I” statements about how you feel (not how someone else has “made you” feel), while staying sensitive to your environment — which includes the feelings of others.

With the Cancer Sun exactly opposite the centaur planet Pholus today, the ripple effects of how you present yourself in the world could reach far. The more you can think a few steps down the line in terms of possible consequences (or understand the sequence of events leading to your current position), the better position you’ll likely be no matter who you encounter or what the situation. A little empathy and understanding often go a long way, whether you offer it to another or to yourself — which, to be honest, can be a great starting point.

By now you’ve figured out that it’s essential to direct your energy in productive and creative ways rather than in aggressive ones. Yet the line between the two approaches to the use of energy can be difficult to see if you’re in a negative space. So it would be fair to say that creative and productive means positive and friendly. Let your curiosity and sense of humor lead you forward, and try new approaches — one at a time, long enough to see if they work.

Today is the solstice: the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere (shortest in the Southern Hemisphere), heralded by the Sun entering the sign Cancer. This year’s solstice chart looks potent: it combines the recent confrontational Mars astrology with the ‘personal is political’ message that comes with major activity in the early cardinal signs.

Certain minor planets bring in the question of how you relate to your familial and ancestral baggage and patterning; other factors seem to be steering us toward the need to align more precisely with what truly enlivens us. Remember that the care you offer has the potential to ripple out widely — as do your more emotionally defensive reactions. Which kind of chain reaction would you prefer to set in motion?

Meanwhile, a conjunction of the asteroid Vesta and Uranus in Taurus appears to speak of revolutionizing your approach to sexual relationships; that is, in a way that allows you to choose what is most authentic to you. Which might not look like how others do relationships, at least not from the outside.

Venus in Gemini is in aspect to Jupiter in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces into next week. Are you feeling compelled to seek new experiences, or just to lie back and daydream about them? If you’re feeling generous (or even just a little ‘spendy’), you’ll likely have a better experience with your giving if done through some kind of structure rather than just trying to help on your own. The idea is to keep perspective on your expectations for recognition and reciprocation; a little research about the recipient and the avenue of assistance is another safeguard.
