“A Scorpio’s Scorpio”: Happy Birthday Bjork!

By Len Wallick and Amanda Painter

Who else but Bjork could so revel in the deep, fecund themes of the very formation of all life, that she named her latest multi-media musical project “Biophilia” (which partly inspired “Cosmophilia,” the 2015 Planet Waves annual)? Who else but “a Scorpio’s Scorpio,” as Eric called her on his recent podcast?

Bjork

Bjork

Bjork was born Nov. 21, 1965, at 7:50 am in Reykjavik, Iceland, near the first peak of the Uranus-Pluto conjunction — the aspect that defined the 1960s.

Her work is so distinct Salon Magazine called her “the most important pop musician of her generation” in 2003. It should be no surprise, then, that her continual busting-open of the pop music genre has as its foundation (or, perhaps, pre-shadowing) that Uranus-Pluto conjunction right on her Midheaven: the angle indicating one’s calling in life and one’s presence on its stage.

With that astrological signature in combination with the rest of her chart, it’s no wonder she has a cult following for her music. Though perhaps what people most respond to is her Sun, Moon, ascendant and Neptune in all in Scorpio. Like many deep Scorpios, Bjork dares to “go there” and encourages the rest of us to do the same.

Yet she manages to do so without intimidating people (as one sterotype about that sign goes) even if she’s not to everyone’s tates. Bjork’s elfin countenance, passionate performances and vitally sensual lyrics instill the essence of life’s funky reality into her music. If you remember the strangely whimsical swan dress she wore at the 73rd Academy Awards on March 25, 2001, you know how much of her demeanor and artistic expression is about finding the playfulness in life as much as its transformative power. The same qualities are visible in many of her music videos.

Bjork grew up in Reykjavik, where she started performing and recording in 1976, at the age of 11. Ten years later she finally gained international prominence as the lead singer of The Sugarcubes, perhaps the most well known band ever to come out of Iceland (although Sigur Ros may now be vying for that distinction).

As an independent musical performer, Bjork has released eight studio albums (with a ninth coming in 2015), which have sold well over 20 million copies worldwide. In addition, she has branched out to other art forms such as cinema.

In the process of developing a constantly evolving and eclectic musical style, Bjork has become among the most respected artists in the world. Thom Yorke has called Bjork’s song “Unravel” (from her 1997 album Homogenic) his “favorite song ever.” This year, Bjork concluded a successful world tour performing her inter-disciplinary and multi-media “Biophilia” project.

As Bjork enters her 50th year (and Chiron return) neither her imagination nor productivity show any sign of slowing down. It remains to be seen what greater wisdom Chiron imparts, and in what form.

True to her generational motif of Uranus and Pluto moving from conjunction to their opening square (which we’re all living under now), Bjork’s creativity includes numerous charitable projects and extensive mentoring of up-and-coming musical artists from Iceland and other parts of the world.

One can see that facet of her life also in the triple conjunction of Saturn, Chiron and Ceres on her IC in Pisces, exactly opposite her Uranus and Pluto. Chiron is the teacher, focusing awareness; Saturn provides a strong container for that awareness and expression; Ceres insists that it all be nourishing to the soul. In Pisces, that art comes from the cosmic ocean and is offered to all.

Reflecting a social conscience as evolved as her art, if a united world were ever to need a president, Bjork would be an excellent candidate.

The Long and Short of It — Sagittarius New Moon

The Sagittarius New Moon on Saturday at 7:32 am EST (12:32 UT) will NOT also be a solar eclipse. That’s the short of it. Even so, the New Moon this weekend will have a highly unusual correlation with the Scorpio New Moon and solar eclipse of last month, and also with the next two New Moons (of December and January), all of which is a slightly longer story.

len-wallick-logo

Begin the story with what defines a New Moon, and in part what it represents. All New Moons are by definition a conjunction of the luminaries: the Sun and Moon. A conjunction by definition is any two celestial objects occupying the exact same degree of the same sign on the zodiac, and the same degree of celestial longitude in the sky.

As with any conjunction of two celestial bodies, a New Moon represents in part the beginning of a new cycle. In this case a cycle (called a lunation) that lasts about four weeks until the next New Moon.

One of the practical doctrines of astrology is that there is important information in how a cycle begins. It so happens that the Scorpio New Moon and solar eclipse of Oct. 23, the Sagittarius New Moon on Saturday, and the lunations initiating both next month and in January (which will also NOT be eclipses) all begin the same way.

You Belong Here: Your 2015 Annual Reading

579+web-nov3-3-2014

Dear Friend and Reader:

Do you belong here, at this time in history? By here, I mean on Earth, in your body, with a meaningful purpose (perhaps as yet to be discovered)?

I have reason to believe that you do, and will focus this theme in the 2015 annual edition of Planet Waves, called Cosmophilia: You Belong Here.

Whether we belong on the planet is one of the silent and most vexing controversies of our time. The theme comes up in many branches of spirituality and is the subtext of nearly every conversation that happens with a therapist. Sometimes the question breaks out into the open, and that is where I plan to keep it.

My annual readings, published each January, are extended written, audio and visual presentations for all 12 signs and rising signs.

The project, which this year features original music, works as one complete entity. Though you might emphasize the materials for your sign and rising sign, this is a 12-sign reading, covering your entire chart.

Through the 12 signs, I provide information about significant others, your children, family members and specific aspects of your life.

The Planet Waves annual edition is an Internet tradition. I first published an annual several weeks after Planet Waves went online in late 1998, and have created annual readings for every sign and rising sign every year since, an adventure in re-learning astrology and setting the pace for the next four seasons.

Planet Waves Weekly Horoscope, Nov. 13 – 20

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You must win by persuasion what you cannot win by force. Clearly you have only influence in this situation rather than power, but that’s usually the story. You will need to get inside someone’s reluctance to negotiate, and rather than the psychology of it, you must tune into the emotional dimension. You are correct if you have a hunch that this is resistance for its own sake, or to demonstrate some point other than the actual subject of the conversation. I suggest you investigate the real extent to which you need someone’s cooperation or consent for your deal or arrangement to go forward. A careful look may reveal that it’s not even necessary. In that case, the emotional attachment would be yours. That would be good news, because you can actually do something about that. You can also exercise your option to be fully informed. That would be helpful.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — I know a dominatrix who has the theory that in every relationship there must be a top and a bottom, or the relationship does not work. In her view there must be a pecking order and distribution of power where it’s clear who the boss is. Now, I am aware she’s a dominatrix, so this fits her personal approach to relationships, but she’s intelligent enough that I have considered the idea for a while. I think it’s more valuable as a question than as an affirmative statement. I can only ask whether this is true in your life — what you believe, and what you actually do. Must there be a boss in a relationship? And if not, how is ‘power’ and authority distributed? What is the role of powerful emotions, as a source of power? Who controls the resources, and to what effect?

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You’re about to be blessed with insights and a line in on deep information about some issue that’s been troubling you. This may involve joint finances or shared resources, and I would guess that it’s been causing you some anxiety. What you need is information — and your charts suggest that is exactly what you’re about to get. Keep your eyes and ears tuned. Stay open and you’ll learn a number of things about policies and regulations that affect you, and you will also sharpen up your points of negotiation. You need to know where your real strength lies, and on the first layer that is in the basic factual information about your situation. Your astrology has another message, which is about the underlying psychological level, what you might call the human level. You need to work both skillfully, but the personal dimension is the more important of the two.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Your charts suggest you may have gone through a rough patch in a relationship. You can use what you’ve learned to help you go deeper with someone you care about, and you can use that knowledge to benefit your other relationships. What is so often forgotten is that relationships require taking a risk. We usually begin them like they are going to work out perfectly. Yet what people tend to forget is that the outcome is uncertain. There is a gamble involved. It may be the cautious taking of a risk; it may be more like a roll of the dice. If you take the risk consciously, and recognize that numerous outcomes are possible, you will live more consciously. You will have more fun. You will be more attentive in the ways that matter the most. And the sex will be better — probably a whole lot better.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Recent events have compelled you to consider what you really mean when you say words like ‘safe’, ‘secure’, and ‘confident’. Indeed you have had the opportunity to question the very ground you walk on; the ground on which your house is built. This may not have been easy but it will have positive results. One of them is the reminder that there are certain things you need to take less seriously, and certain other things you need to take more seriously. If you are going through a sorting-out process, that would be right on time with your astrology. This will naturally extend to all matters of family and may take you on an unusual journey into your tribal and genetic lineage. There are things you can learn now that have never been available before, and may never be available again. Please treat this moment as what it is: one of a kind.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — I would love nothing more than to think the world is becoming more enlightened, but I have my doubts. What I do not doubt is that right now you are gaining insight into yourself. I also know that you’ve earned the knowledge that is coming to you, from you. The past few days in particular have been rich with discoveries about how you think and some about why you think that way. In particular, you may be seeing the power of what you can do when you understand the influence of your emotions on your mental processes, and when you take steps to discern the basic difference between those two orders of reality. Think of it this way: Emotions are something that are more likely to happen to you. Thought is something you fly like a glider. Your mind may be providing the atmospheric conditions that make flight possible, but you are guiding the craft.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Often I wish there was a better term for self-esteem. It seems like such a reductionist way to describe the quest for meaning and value that everyone on the planet goes through at some point. What is clear from your charts is that you rarely let on that this is happening. You have a cat-like way of concealing your interior reality. What you cannot do at this point is hide from yourself. Indeed, the thing that’s happening now is a kind of inner confrontation where several levels of your personal belief system are merging into one cohesive reality. The reason this is challenging is because those levels have a way of conflicting. There are different versions of events, values you’ve collected from a variety of sources and that have been formed by different influences. And then there is what you organically know to be true. You might simplify this whole process by starting right there.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Nearly every stitch of planetary activity this week is focused in your sign, or involving the planetary rulers of your sign. That may feel like a lot of pressure. You may be trying to push out the walls, looking for a little more room to breathe. At times you may be longing to get outside of your own thoughts and feelings and push into some new reality. I would say that’s exactly the point. Some of the most magnificent astrology is happening four signs away in Pisces, your fellow water sign. You can go anywhere you want in your chart. The way you do that is by shifting your perspective, your activities and your agenda. Sometimes you can do that by changing locations. The place to go is Pisces, which is your 5th house. In astrology that is the house of pleasure, art, creation, games and risks taken for fun. It’s also the house of sex. Your astrology is saying get out of your mind and into your senses.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You must feel like the weight of the world has been taken off your shoulders, and if you don’t, give it a day or two. You can trust at least one thing — what you are working out now, you will never have to work out again. Or to qualify that, you will not, if you go through it with full mindfulness and keep your mind on the many layers of what you are doing. You are standing in the midst of an opportunity to resolve issues that have followed you your whole life. What you have now that you have not had before is an opportunity to work on multiple layers of your situation at the same time. By situation, I mean your orientation on your existence, your self-concept and most of all, your fears. Yes, it’s taking some courage to face all of this, but it’s courage that is quickly rewarded by an increase in confidence and the craving to take the next step. In this space, setbacks matter little, because they are seen as the temporary bumps or the learning opportunities that they are.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — It may seem like the Earth itself is cracking open under your feet. It may seem like the environment that surrounds you is changing so fast you have no way to keep up with it. Both of those are illusions that mask the deeper truth; that you are changing, faster than you ever imagined possible. Well, changing might not be the right word. What’s happening is that your inner nature is being revealed to you, and clearing out of the way everything that is unlike itself. As this is happening, your perception of your surroundings is changing, simply because perception is a direct result of how you experience yourself. There are times when you know this is true and yet it’s difficult to access that level of reality. There are times when it’s a lot easier, and now happens not to be one of them. Seize the moment. Let the energy moving through you be guided by the intentions of your deepest intelligence.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Your mind is not a museum. Your mind is not a prison. Your mind is not the collected artifacts of your ancestors’ worst fears and unlived dreams. Your mind is something beautiful, alive, and an entity that is under your full guidance and influence. Whatever you may be going through, there is the underlying theme that your life is yours to live. This is intimately connected with your ability to discern the past from the present. It’s true that the past offers a sense of security, but since it no longer exists except as an idea and some old clay pots, cave paintings and religion, how much safety can it really offer you? One bold quest would be for you to challenge all forms of false security, fictional self-assurance and make-believe control, and come up with a fresh idea about why exactly you are free to live your life your way.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Planetary aspects are cascading through the signs Aries, Scorpio and Capricorn. For some people they are shaking the world, and others feel like their world is being pulled apart. Yet behind the scenes of all of this astrology is Chiron in Pisces, and a few layers back is Neptune in Pisces. There’s plenty of turmoil available to get caught in. There is plenty that’s wrong with the world. But the influences emanating from your sign point to the deeper reality, the sublime and something close to the source. Where you invest your consciousness is your choice. That is the thing to remind yourself. Negativity is an extreme temptation now because it’s so prevalent, and so aggressive. There are so many people struggling. And denial is never the answer to the world’s problems. You have another option open; you have a line into a direct source of intelligence, strength and what I’ll call creative compassion. Praise creation and do your part in the healing process.

Eric Francis | Sex By Sign #15: Week of Nov. 14-21, 2014

Eric Francis Sex by Sign for GLYDE

ARIES - SEX BY SIGN ERIC FRANCISARIES (March 20-April 19)
When sex comes down to a power struggle, it has lost its real meaning. When sex is being used for some purpose other than pleasure, creativity and communication, it may be better to abstain, since the content of sex is what it’s all about. Of course, we tend to think these things are normal, and believe that sex must have a victim. My question is, do you feel overpowered by someone? My other question is, are you really? Your astrology answers those questions yes and no, respectively.

TAURUS Sex in Signs by Eric FrancisTAURUS (April 19-May 20)
People are starting to figure out how much fun dominance and submission play can be. Forget the recent bestseller and the forthcoming movie. This is not an activity exclusively for billionaires or people with rape fantasies. Dom/sub play is some of the most basic, garden variety fun you can have. The beauty of this form of play is how much it depends upon psychological awareness and the nuances of communication. It’s so beautiful because of the depth of intimacy involved.

GEMINI Sex by Signs Eric FrancisGEMINI (May 20-June 21)
The ongoing obsession with rape and with boundaries has another dimension, which is feeding the problem: most people don’t know how to negotiate sex. Sex is something that’s just supposed to mysteriously happen. One gets lucky, gets laid, their partner happens to be in the right mood or they can work their seductive powers. The astrology of the moment is about the art of conscious exchange. In your current environment, everyone has needs, and everyone has something to offer, which is perfect.

CANCER Sex by Signs Eric Francis CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Your sexual imagination is aligned with your intuition. You might think of your fantasies as movies you watch, or as wishful thinking. But in a sense they are also prescient. They offer glimpses of what is possible and even what is likely. Consider that something you can imagine very easily is also something you can manifest easily. In some significant way, your inner life is aligned with your outer life. Be attentive to both, watch people’s eyes and follow your sense of smell.

LEO Sex by Sign GLYDE by Eric FrancisLEO (July 22-Aug. 23)
Imagine how much better sex people would have if only they were more secure. Said another way, insecurity and lack of a sense of belonging contribute to a narrowing of the sexual possibilities. Yet your potential is opening up even as you read these words. That’s because you’ve finally taken to heart the quest for feeling safe on the planet, in your living space and in your skin. You don’t need to go the whole distance for this to have profound effects. You merely need to move in the necessary direction, which is exactly what you’re doing.

VIRGO Sex by Signs GLYDE Eric FrancisVIRGO (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
What is the story of your sexuality? By that I mean your history, and the narrative that goes with it? You may notice that your actual history is different than your narrative. You may notice that you have two narratives — one that you share with others, and one that you share with yourself. Your astrology is describing the perfect conditions to allow something close to the actual story to be the story that you develop and allow to influence your choices.

LIBRA Sex by Signs Eric Francis GLYDELIBRA (Sept. 22-Oct. 23)
One reason that masturbation is controversial is that it does not seem to involve a relationship. But anyone who has gone deep into the territory knows that it involves your relationship to yourself. The sex you have with yourself is an expression of the love that you feel for yourself. This may not seem like good news to those who don’t like to masturbate or who consider it a substitute for ‘real sex’. Or who knows, maybe you’re really, really into it. I will say this: You have some amazing territory to explore, and the opportunity to connect with the core of your erotic being, which is territory approaching the core of your psyche.

SCORPIO Sex by Signs Eric Francis for GLYDESCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
You seem self-absorbed. You seem pensive. You also seem very, very horny. Yet that does not combine well with  the darker shades of introverted. It may seem like a huge risk to try something more fun, but the real risk is letting go of one state of mind and plunging into another. If you do, what you’re likely to discover is how good it feels to vent some of that pent-up energy. The real issue is  giving you permission to take what, for you, seems like some kind of unusual chance, though only to gain the potential of some unusual reward.

SAGITTARIUS Sex by Sign Eric Francis GLYDESAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
I suggest you plunge deep into the heart of who you are and what you want. You’ve probably already begun this. The first step is to set your mind free. Allow yourself any fantasy, any desire, any need, no matter how taboo or seemingly controversial. The next step is to express this emotionally in some way. By express I mean the opposite of repress. By express, I mean to feel physically, and to connect your desire with where it’s coming from in your body. You are on a journey to the center, and there are many layers on the way.

CAPRICORN Sex by Sign Eric Francis for GLYDECAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
Let out some of the mojo that seems to be coursing through your blood, your bones, your heart and your soul. You have no need to hold it in — except maybe the fear of what other people might think. When it comes to sex, that is the very last thing that guides the choices of someone who seeks the freedom; indeed it is the first thing to confront, ignite and throw the ashes to the wild wind.

AQUARIUS Sex by Sign ERic Francis for GLYDEAQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
The foggy ruins of time are strewn with ridiculous ideas about sex and sexuality. Within my own lifetime, to give one example, homosexual activity was considered a crime, a contagious disease and a sin against someone’s idea of God. Now we can laugh at that. There are many other relics of the past that you can see for what they are, and in the process, love yourself for who and what you are, who you love and what you want to experience — no matter how much it may seem to conflict with someone’s notion of purity. No matter who, especially you.

PISCES Sex by Sign by Eric Francis for GLYDEPISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
Ease off a bit on stressful thoughts and activities and you will have plenty of energy for sex. Yes, the world is burning, exploding and going mad many places, and you’ve been through a good bit yourself the past few weeks. True, you have plenty to do. But beneath the storm clouds and the dust is a placid lake of creative and sexual energy. You won’t know that for sure until you get close to it, which I suggest you do, as soon as you can arrange it.

Check Your Assumptions: Venus Square Neptune

Coming up on Thursday is a square aspect from Venus in Sagittarius to Neptune in Pisces. It is not a rare event. Even so, in context with the rest of the sky, Venus square Neptune this time around is an opportune time to check your assumptions just as you would check to make sure you have your key before closing a door behind you.

len-wallick-logo

A quick check can save a lot of grief, like getting locked out. Because Venus is moving pretty quickly right now (faster than any other sign rulers, save Mercury and the Moon), a quick check should be all you need.

As with anything to be checked quickly, you need to know where to look. Fortunately, the relationship between Venus and Neptune will help you you know. What Sagittarius and Pisces have in common will also help indicate how square aspects between those two signs are best resolved.

Interestingly, a lot of astrologers subscribe to the notion that Venus and Neptune represent different octaves of the same theme. In other words, the same same note or chord, at a different pitch.

Venus and Neptune as the same note or chord at different octaves is something to keep in mind when you check your assumptions over the next few days. Know where to look by asking where the assumptions come from. Do they come from personal experience? From your generation? Or from your gender orientation, ethnicity, nationality or beliefs?

Sun-Saturn: Hidden Structures & the Planet Waves Website

Dear Friend and Reader:

Today’s Sun-Saturn conjunction in Scorpio may be bringing up all kinds of things for you, some ‘heavy’, others motivating you to get something done. Sun-Saturn might also be helping you to notice structures in your life that are hidden or less obvious.

Take, for example, the complete overhaul of the Planet Waves website that Eric, Anatoly and team of programmers completed in September. They didn’t just change the look of the site.

They simplified the whole experience of using the site, bringing many areas together into one. It’s now possible to access all of our materials under your own identity and password.

I realize you might not have had a chance yet to explore the site if you’re not a Core Community or All-Access Pass member, given how busy life gets and the emails and links and social media chatter everyone sifts through these days.

Eric has taken the  content block off of several pages, and you may click through without registering. These links include writers who have developed their voice specifically to speak to you, in the challenging, beautiful life you are living.

Sarah Taylor writes an accessible, nuanced tarot reading for the week each Sunday. Len Wallick has established a devoted following for his humane, step-by-step Tuesday/Thursday astrology column. Amanda Moreno, new to the PW Sunday roster, muses on her exploration of spiritual, esoteric and healing arts from a personal perspective. If you’ve been a subscriber long enough, you may remember Judith Gayle’s spiritual/political essays — she now appears each Saturday on the website.

When you upgrade to either Core Community or All-Access Pass membership, the new site also gives you web access to your Tuesday and Thursday subscriber editions — we put them right on the front page. The weekly horoscopes are also posted there, both as part of the issue and posted separately if you want to make a beeline for them (again, as part of Core Community and All-Access Pass membership). We’ve temporarily waived the access restriction on those areas, so you can see how it feels to read them on the new site. Just click the links and you will see the articles.

Speaking of horoscopes, have you seen Eric’s new weekly horoscope, called Sex By Sign, which focuses specifically on the relational and inner growth aspects of sexuality? It’s available through the Core Community and All-Access Pass membership, but for a limited time you’re invited to check it out on the website, where it’s posted every week.

Monday Diary: Sun conjunct Saturn — Get It Done

Note: This article is available to all readers, though you will need to register for Planet Waves to read below the fold. Registration is free; just tap this link or the little button to the right and tell us your first name, email and Sun sign and you’re into lots of great articles, seven days a week. –efc

This week the main event is an alignment of the Sun and Saturn in late Scorpio. That happens Tuesday at 3:50 am EST (08:50 UTC). The Sun and Saturn form a conjunction once a year, and this is our event for 2014 — and notably the last alignment of the Sun and Saturn in Scorpio.

Artist's rendering of a Sun-Saturn alignment, seen from the night side of Saturn. This is a beautiful image, though the Sun is probably shown a lot larger than it would be from this distance -- about 900 million miles.

Artist’s rendering of a Sun-Saturn alignment, seen from the night side of Saturn. This is a beautiful image, though the Sun is probably shown a lot larger than it would be from this distance — about 900 million miles.

When we get to those last-of-a-kind (for this long cycle) events, we’re in the transition phase; the next Sun-Saturn conjunction will be in Sagittarius.

This conjunction is the full activation of the Saturn principle. I’ll come to that in a moment — first a comment on the emotional nature of this aspect. Sun-Saturn alignments can feel heavy.

They can also indicate an emotional struggle, pressure or depression. They can feel like your life force is leaking out. They don’t always feel that way but it is possible that you’re picking up on this. If so, take care of yourself on that level first. Pace yourself, distribute your workload or lean on a friend for some support. Sun-Saturn can also have a spartan feeling, so make sure you eat well, drink water and stay in contact with others. You will feel better and right now that counts for a lot.

The fact that this is in Scorpio adds to the emotional dimension of the experience. In another sign, it would have a different sensation. In Scorpio the feeling tone is placed on the emotional level.
