It may seem, once again, that your security needs are being played against your emotional needs in a relationship. You are not alone in this, please be assured: this issue is going around on the planet. Since our culturally-sanctioned method of having experiences of people is based on a win/lose model, it’s pretty common that our lives are set up such that our inner needs conflict as well. The important thing now is that you stay close to your feelings, particularly those of anger and passion. In a little while, what you experience in these realms will become the basis for many important decisions that cannot be made based on reason alone. But as it turns out, the hotter, impetuous and seemingly more unreasonable aspects of your psyche are likely to just confirm what you’ve already carefully decided.

You are finally in a position to reach the delicate compromise that you’ve been wanting to create with someone. I strongly suggest, however, that you do not push anything forward, but rather gently move yourself into position to create the outcome you want. Quietly assume things are going to work out. Live as if the other person already sees your point of view, and finds it acceptable. To ensure that the equation is balanced, listen carefully for clues about their position, their needs and their sense of how they perceive you. Be ready to offer something; be ready to receive. And then be patient.

When the time comes to break free from your shell, do it gently. Given the astrology of the past month — particularly, Mars in your sign after spending eight months in one of the most introspective angles of your chart — you seem determined not just to think independently but be independent. Yet going back longer than this, you’ve been struggling with the authority principle: you simply don’t want other people setting your limits, telling you what to do, or rearranging your boundaries for you. And, after spending a lot of time dealing with various shades of lurking fear, you’ve started to adjust the circumstances in your life to reflect this basic truth. As the astrology of August develops, you’ll discover that you’re not done making changes — though as you consider your situation, I suggest you reflect on two things. One is the extent to which you’re adjusting your inner psychological and emotional landscape rather than the world around you. You’re in a challenging maturing process that, at the moment, is compelling you to see that in truth you live your life from the inside out. It’s not always so obvious and there’s plenty of evidence to the contrary, though as you strive to set yourself free from someone or something, remember that most of what you’re liberating yourself from is from you. Second idea — that something is a past concept of who you are. The past is gone, though now you’re finally challenging one of its most enduring emotional artifacts.

The answer is not to detach from your feelings, but rather to go deeply into them. You have an excellent grasp of how you feel on an intellectual level, yet there is an aspect of this situation that is showing no mercy. In the minds of most, that is not an invitation to be more vulnerable, but rather a cue to be more aloof. Remember, you don’t need to prove anything to anyone, and the last I heard, sensitivity was neither an Olympic sport nor a commodity traded on the Nasdaq. You can start with being aware of what you feel, and your ideas will give you a good idea where to begin. A creative outlet of some kind will guide you deeper into yourself, and that’s the place you’re going to find refuge, release and the sense of connection that you seek.

Your professional identity or official title is not who you are. Ideally what you do emerges from your sense of who you are and what is the most meaningful to you, though for most people that would be considered a luxury. At the moment you may be experiencing anything from some mild confusion to outright conflict between something related to your job and your sense of self. First, I suggest you not try to work this out so fast. It’s one of the deeper questions that we face in Western culture — working out the whole issue of ‘I am’ as it relates to what we’re supposed to have accomplished by any particular age. I would say that this issue goes far deeper than job, profession or title; we are really talking about how you relate to your mission in being alive. That is not something you find outside yourself. It’s an inner search, where outer clues count for something. Yet is the search really necessary? Don’t you just know? Or are you still in the process of admitting it to yourself? Pay attention — information is coming.

Most of the time, you’re accustomed to exerting a large effort to get a small result. I suggest you begin a long-term study in how little energy you can exert in order to get exactly the result you want. I recognize that school, bosses, dieting and the force of gravity have all conspired to teach you that the law of life is ‘no pain, no gain’. It’s time, however, to reverse that equation, and strive for working with such focus and efficiency that you accomplish every goal with the least possible output of energy — including thinking. You’ll be surprised how much you can accomplish.

It could be that you feel the bottom is being pulled out from under you, but I think that what you’re losing is really your false sense of security. Nobody can deny that better things are possible in your emotional life, much less you. The problem with false security is that it often prevents us from seeking what is real, and provides an excuse for us not to take care of ourselves. If personal circumstances are turning in this direction, I suggest you go with the changes and, soon enough, you’ll find yourself standing on solid ground.
