You seem to be making up your mind about something, trying to sort out your original impulses from what your past conditioning is telling you. This could be a longterm career or life-path question, though it’s connected to a deeper spiritual issue. I think it’s a good idea to consider the possibilities, especially what you would do if you could do anything at all. Then you can refine and narrow down the possibilities. While you’re doing this, be aware of the sometimes subtle shades of what you’re saying to yourself and what is being said to you from people in the past who lacked your sense of potential and, moreover, your devotion to self-esteem. Those who came here before you may have been snagged in the trap that the only thing possible today is what was possible yesterday. You have other ideas.

I don’t reckon much at all feels quite right, but it’s not exactly wrong. In such times you have little choice but to see what happens next and do your best to adapt to a changing situation. In a relationship scenario you may be wondering if it’s you or the other person whose actions or feelings are the cause of the current confusion. There is, as well, a tremendous temptation both to dwell on the past and to fix the past. Neither is going to work. What you can do is learn from the past, and face up to the feeling that this has all happened before. Very little is new under the Sun unless we put considerable energy into making it so.

In theory everyone in the world is equal. In practice, that’s a matter of potential. We all have such different desires and diverse talents. Often it seems other people are doing something much more exciting or meaningful than we are, or as if they got a long head start in their learning process. In reality, just about everyone you see who’s attained some level of actual mastery has poured his or her heart and soul into it. They made up their mind to focus and then exceeded significant adversities; many of them in their own personalities. That’s the spirit you need to borrow from the people you respect most.

Listen for the sound of the future calling you. I mean that literally — the information is going to come through your ears. It might be spoken, it might be music, it might be some sound in an urban landscape, or it might be the sound of a natural event — but keep your ears open. That would include the things you hear in dreams, and what is known as clairaudience, a kind of ultraviolet dimension of hearing that some consider a psychic phenomenon. In any event, listen. Listen until you understand what someone is saying, not what you think they’re saying — there is a difference, we all know there is a difference, and we often ignore it. The reason we ignore this feeling of not really knowing is halfway between being lazy and not caring. Repeat back what you’ve heard, and what you think you understand, till you’re sure that you really grasp it. I will pass along my one sentence of advice for young journalists, which is know when you don’t know.
