Len Wallick | Not Bad is Good

Saturn left Sagittarius behind to enter Capricorn early today. As Len Wallick sees it, you could very plausibly think of the occasion as something like coming home for a while — just in time for a holiday season when many of us will be doing just that.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 21
(The Day of the Great Enigma) | Birthday Readings: Sagittarius | Capricorn | Others
Today’s magnificent conjunction of the Sun and your ruling planet Saturn, in your birth sign, on your birthday, is a blessing from the cosmos. For one thing, you know that if you set a goal and are willing to work toward it, nothing is out of reach. You can feel good about yourself, and you can reach the financial success you aspire to.

Written in the Planets
Today’s extraordinary astrology invites you to begin a new era in your life. It might not feel so very momentous right away; but once Mercury has turned and is once again flying forwards, the picture will likely start to become clearer. Consider this a phase of review and evaluation, which is as much about recognizing and preparing to discard what you don’t need, as inviting in what you do. Start deciding on the ground rules and your aspirational goals. These are the foundations on which you can then, if you wish, build an entirely new way of being.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 20
(The Day of the Generator) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
You may feel close to a breakthrough. You’ve made many meaningful changes to your life the past few years, and it’s high time you got the benefits of your efforts. Yet you must be patient, and give each development time to come to fruition. This will not take nearly as long as you may think, and time is your best friend.

Written in the Planets
Do you find yourself chasing the next social or emotional holiday high this time of year? Or do you tend to seek to deepen the spiritual expression of your values? Today’s square between Venus in Sagittarius and Chiron in Pisces seems to be asking this question, and possibly provoking some tension in the process. Where is the point of action and integration for you? With the Sun conjunct Pholus and the Galactic Core, flashes of insight and your expressions of them could initiate a ripple effect — for yourself and for those around you. Write it all down, just in case it slips away after the moment passes.

This Week’s Horoscope for Sagittarius by Eric Francis Coppolino

Most of this week’s astrology is focused on your sign, and there’s quite a bit. Three interesting points: Saturn leaves Sagittarius after nearly three years, Mercury stations direct, and there’s a New Moon conjunct the Galactic Center. All of these symbols describe renewal, release, and expansion. It’s as if you’re being set free to experience a taste of your future. This will happen whether you plan it or not. It doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re doing; you will see evidence that your environment is changing. Notice who is around you. Notice the opportunities that emerge. Notice your impressions of the weather. Celebrate the most basic elements of your life and your surroundings. As Saturn changes signs, you may notice that a certain shaky, quaky feeling goes away and you discover that you’re made of more solid stuff than you previously thought. This will help you focus your plans and place emphasis on keeping your commitments, whether to yourself or to others.

You may read all 12 signs here.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 19
(The Day of the Hellraisers) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
Saturn moving in your favor today means it’s time to get your act together financially. You need dependable sources of income, in activities you actually like and are paid adequately for. Your economic potential is linked directly to your self-esteem. You must like what you do, and also respect your precious time. Nothing less can be called independence.

Written in the Planets
With Mercury conjunct the Great Attractor in Sagittarius today (on its way to stationing direct Dec. 22), don’t be surprised if certain thoughts seem determined to stay barely out of reach — kind of like having a word just on the tip of your tongue. Don’t worry; this too shall pass. Today’s big news, however, is Saturn’s return ‘home’ to Capricorn tonight into Wednesday (depending on time zone). Notice where you see the desire for prestige and power over others, versus a sense of responsibility and persistence in joyful service. Either can be an expression of Saturn in Capricorn. Once you’re aware of this, you can choose which expression you’d like to strive to embody.

The Case of the Capricorn Solstice

This could be the most interesting week in quite a while — and that’s saying a lot. I guess “interesting” is a charitable way to describe the rise of tyranny by ignorance, chaos and pixels, and any possible resistance, and events that seem outside our control — but it’s the holiday season.

On Tuesday, Saturn enters Capricorn, making contact with the Aries Point and commencing the Saturn-Pluto conjunction that will shape and in some way define our lives for the next three years.

Then 36 hours later, the Sun reaches solstice, aligning with the Tropic of Capricorn, thereby entering the sign Capricorn and making a conjunction with Saturn; ramping up the Aries Point activation by an order of magnitude.

Then Friday, Mercury stations direct, releasing a dam of pent-up energy that’s been collecting through these exceedingly eventful few weeks that it’s been retrograde. Mercury is currently stationing direct in mid-Sagittarius, conjunct a deep-space point called Laniakea/Great Attractor, one of the most prodigious, mysterious and indeed massive elements in all of astronomy.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 18
(The Day of Mammoth Projects) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
A magnificent New Moon on your birth anniversary is a reminder to wake up and face each day as a new experience. You’re bestowed with a rare gift of optimism that has deep roots in your life purpose. While you may wonder whether you’re really having an influence in the world, set those concerns aside, and strive to improve your immediate surroundings.

Written in the Planets
We’re approaching the New Year, and today’s New Moon conjunct the Galactic Core might well induce you to consider some early resolutions. Not the absolutist kind, which everyone breaks within the first week, but the more profound sort. This rare transit may be viewed as a way for us all to align ourselves with the cosmos. What that translates to could be something like readjusting the way you use your time, so as to do more toward whatever you see as your actual life mission; or making changes in your world that bring you closer to your truth. The past 12 months, terrible though they have been for many, have at least perhaps laid bare how prone we all are to lying to ourselves, and accepting bullshit and half-assed compromises. The time for that is over. Be unashamedly, completely and vividly yourself.

Final arguments got underway Friday in Washington, D.C., in a case that could shape the future of free speech and the right to protest in the United States: the first trial of the nearly 200 people arrested during President Donald Trump’s inauguration. The first so-called J20 trial involves six people. The defendants face multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including multiple counts of destruction of property. Evidence against them has been scant.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 17
(The Day of Earthy Chemistry) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
Act only when you’re ready. Interposing a short delay between making a decision and taking action will almost always work to your advantage. Leave yourself time and space to prove your theory, to come up with a better plan, or for additional information to come in, and then make your move. If you’re feeling rushed, that’s the time to slow down.

Written in the Planets
The dark of the Moon can be rather tense sometimes, to say the least. Today, with the Sun forming a conjunction to Ixion, you’ll need to step with extra care to ensure you don’t accidentally tread on someone’s toes. Keep your best and most compassionate side uppermost; and be proactive in preventing any possible misconstruction of your words, by framing them as clearly as you can. If you find yourself becoming irritated for whatever reason, remember that everything passes and perspectives can change, and consider carefully before taking any action. You’ll likely feel differently tomorrow.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 16
(The Day of Soaring Imagination) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
You will find the liberation from the past that you seek, especially if you choose consciously to stop recreating it. This is a decision you must make; and to do that, you’ll need to recognize the signposts that point you back and the ones that point you forward. They will be clear if you’re paying attention, particularly to how you feel in the presence of certain people.

Written in the Planets
Today looks like you can tap easily into some originality and independence; possibly even some level of wisdom or something akin to intuitive strategizing. That’s the Sagittarius Sun making a trine to Uranus and Pallas in Aries. You might apply these qualities to your holiday gift shopping and social-event scheduling, or to something more internal (such as harmonizing your sense of identity with some kind of spiritual attunement or orientation). Bear in mind that a Mars-Nessus trine is adding some motivation and willingness to see an old emotional or sexual pattern for what it is, and then do what needs to be done to transform it. Juno entering Aquarius may underscore the need for independence in relationships, or could also remind you that every relationship needs a job — working together on some social cause could be just the ticket.

Getting Oriented in the ‘New Normal’

Dear Friend and Reader:

With so much going on in the news that stirs up fear, trauma and a sense of powerlessness, it’s especially gratifying and surprising when something actually goes right: on Tuesday, the citizens of Alabama voted in a special election to put Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Doug Jones into the seat vacated by current U.S. Secretary of State Jeff Sessions. The loser? Republican Roy Moore: a man who has been accused by several women of harassing them — and in some cases sexually assaulting them — when they were only teenagers and he was a District Attorney.

Doug Jones and his wife Louise celebrate his win Tuesday night in Alabama. Photo by Dina Litovsky / Redux for The New Yorker.

What does it say about us as a society that most people seemed to assume Moore would win despite the allegations, which come on top of his well-known history of racism, homophobia, misogyny and extremism?

For one, it’s a barometer of the political gaslighting spearheaded by Trump. Even though we’ve seen famous, powerful men dropping like flies from their positions of status for the last couple months, the Pussy-Grabber-in-Chief remains in office, spouting irrational tirades via Twitter as though the planet itself depends on it.

If Trump seems untouchable regarding the sexual assault accusations he faces, why wouldn’t a man he publicly endorsed (at the urging of Stephen Bannon) prove the same? Especially in a state where, up until 2003, a 14-year-old child could get married with the consent of the parents.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 15
(The Day of Expansion) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
You’re poised to make great strides in finding your true purpose where work is concerned. This will be more like remembering something than discovering it. And the full expression of your idea will most likely come in the form of an unusual collaboration or partnership. Begin experimenting immediately, and you will find your way to the hidden stone.

Written in the Planets
Today the Moon joins a veritable stampede of planetary critters in Sagittarius, several of which are making interesting aspects to objects around the solar system. It looks like a good day to talk about what it means to nourish our feminine sides, as well as what it means to be a female spiritual warrior who leads from the heart. At the same time, other aspects bring up the concept of our collective wounded masculine side. What is the nature of that injury, and what might healing it look like? No matter what your gender, sex or sexual orientation, the framework of astrology describes everyone having a ‘feminine’ side and a ‘masculine’ side. Even if you keep your inquiry to your journal, it may prove incredibly useful given the cultural conversations happening now.

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”
— Shirley Jackson (‘The Haunting of Hill House’)

Celebrating Victory in Alabama

Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore in the race to fill the Alabama Senate seat left vacant by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Democracy Now! covered the news of the win with Pema Levy, a political reporter for Mother Jones. Meanwhile, our own Len Wallick examined the event in the light of the Sun-Mercury conjunction halfway through the present Mercury retrograde.

If Your Birthday is Dec. 14
(The Day of the Selective Exhibitionist) | Sagittarius Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
Intuition is your best guidance. You know what’s right, though I would also remind you that knowing comes with not being afraid in any form. Your inner guidance is designed to lead you away from fearful places into ones where you’re protected, well informed and free to act on what you want. Your personal truth will resonate with you mentally, and physically.

Written in the Planets
Today the Sun and Mercury make aspects to outer planets named after a divine couple from Tolkien’s legendarium. Manwe and Varda are the King and Queen of the Valar (basically, gods). When they were together, Tolkien wrote, Manwe’s sight and Varda’s hearing were elevated. In a similar way, when the parts of our consciousness (which both the Sun and Mercury represent) work in harmony, we tend to function more cohesively. You can help this along by paying attention to what your senses and instincts are telling you; and trying to resolve any inner division that arises.
