Dear Friend and Listener:

Tonight’s Planet Waves FM is devoted to the Virgo New Moon and Venus in Scorpio. I begin with an urgent message about Brett Kavanaugh, who has been nominated to the Supreme Court.

Then I devote two segments to the New Moon, first discussing the configuration related to the lunation itself, then the pattern around the Galactic Center — and finally, Venus in Scorpio.

The last segment is Tantra Studio, wherein I discuss the alleged controversy of desire, picking up on Venus in Scorpio.

Planet Waves FM is supported by your tax-deductible donations to Chiron Return, publishers of this program. Thank you for your generous contributions, your monthly memberships, for referring the program to your friends, and sending your thoughtful letters.

Monday Morning Horoscope for Sept. 3, 2018

Aries

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Consider where your social constellations were at the beginning of the year, and where they are today. Who did you consider a friend? What networks were you part of then, and which are you part of now? This story is not over; Mars, which was retrograde in Aquarius most of the summer, is about to retrace its steps giving you both second opportunities and new ones. It is vital that you assess carefully what the idea of a friend means to you, and who you consider one. I would propose that there be one consideration, mainly: whether you feel comfortable being yourself. Breaking that down a bit, a friend is someone around whom you don’t have to hide any facet of your reality. You also won’t need to conform. Some people think they need friends to call them out or slap them down, though I think that true friendship is gentler than that. Most of all, it involves trust. This is something to observe carefully. Is your idea of trust more like walking on thin ice, or more like walking on solid ground? Notice how you feel, with everyone.

Venus will be retrograde in Scorpio and Libra from Oct. 5. In his 2018 Autumn Reading, Empathy-Pathos, Eric will review recent astrology, and open up the territory of Venus. Pre-order this 12-sign audio reading now for just $57 — we will increase the price again soon.
Taurus

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Be cautious of any notion that you can make some improvement in your life by competing with others. It’s true that our economic and social systems are based on a concept of winners and losers, and it’s true that this works only for the “winners” in such a system. Yet that’s not how existence really works. We all get to take part. Nature is based on the holistic principle, which is about how the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. One of the most useful concepts in all of biology is symbiosis, which describes the various modes of cooperation that are possible between species. Depending on your upbringing and other factors, you may be more or less competitive by nature, though I suggest you treat this topic carefully. Be observant. Be cautious even of “competing with yourself” to do something better than you did last time. There are other approaches, which are easier and more humane. And at the moment, there may be a hint of bitterness to competing. You just don’t need that. Be supportive instead.

Gemini

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You’re not the “fit in” type though you’re excellent at faking it. You can mask your differences with others using several worthwhile assets you possess, one being that you’re a person who is conversant and funny. Additionally, your ability to see two, three, or more sides of any person allows you room to be less judgmental than many people give themselves permission to be. A factor of your newly emergent life, though, is going to be about being sincerely different. It will be more challenging to set aside your talent for masking or finessing difference and stand out. Yet you’re not just dealing yourself a disadvantage in doing so. You are only removing a scrim, a veil that shields your true self from exposure. You don’t need to be “extra blunt” to do this; you merely need to say what you mean, and mean what you say. There will be some repercussions to this. There will be people who don’t like it, and who don’t get it. And there will be people who most definitely appreciate your approach, and the essence of your being, and you have to know exactly who they are.

Cancer

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Your professional success requires that you be willing to stand out in ways that are not, at the moment, considered acceptable. This is the whole point of your current career trajectory: to do what needs to be done, in a time when that is especially challenging, and to do so in the spirit of pioneering leadership. Inconvenient as it may be, your success and indeed survival depend on your accepting this assignment, even if you do so reluctantly. The operative symbol is Chiron, which is at the beginning of a long trip across your 10th solar house, Aries. Beginnings are the time to set the agenda, to aim your trajectory, and to harmonize with your environment. What you’re about to do will require that you understand the dynamics of actual power, and respond accordingly. The recent Mars retrograde in Aquarius has been preparation for this journey, teaching you plenty about the ways that groups behave and are influenced, particularly when under stress. Through late summer and most of the autumn, Mars will provide you with a kind of summary and review of what you’ve experienced. Note carefully what you learn, as you will depend on it for a long time.

Leo

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — For months, Mars has had a presence in your opposite sign Aquarius, which has likely dug out some difficult truths, and old animosity. Yet you’re also more determined than ever to live your life your way, no matter what other people may say or believe about you. Even in good times, the human experience is laced with adversity, contention and competition. Your challenge is to handle these things gracefully and, moreover, intelligently. One way you will do this is to see everyone and everything as part of the wider social context in which they occur. Mars will have you inclined to see what stands out, or what yells the loudest. Don’t let that distract you. Look to the background for your most vital information. Listen to as many points of view as possible. When you see a phenomenon of some kind, ask yourself what is supporting it. Notice the ground from which events emerge. That is where the really interesting action is, and where you will find the most valuable information.

Virgo Birthdays and Rising 2018-19:

Get Your Year Started Right, Virgo — and Leo, and Libra!

"So deeply helpful and encouraging, Eric; confirms my experiences recently and over the past 10 years. Thanks so much for your care and guidance.

— Lisa

Dear Friend and Reader:

Did you hear the news? Eric recently recorded the two segments of your Virgo Astrology Studio (previously called the "Birthday Reading") — with the Sun fresh in Virgo, and just before the Pisces Full Moon.

Virgo

How would you like to start your solar year with some of the most useful, most accessible, most empowering audio astrology available online? Your Tarot reading for the year (called the Virgo Tarot Studio) will be coming along in a bit — but you’ll get both the astrology and the tarot for just $44 if you order soon. Please be aware that the price will increase again when Eric publishes the tarot segment — these are the final days to purchase the Virgo Astrology Studio (which includes the Tarot reading) at the current price.

Along with this year’s other most influential transits, Eric spends some time in this reading discussing Saturn’s journey through your fellow earth sign Capricorn over this year and next. Since this is happening in your 5th house, there’s a strong theme here of reclaiming your childhood. Virgos have a way of growing up early and getting lost in the joys of work and service. But what are you discovering about pleasure for its own sake?

In addition to your two astrology segments and tarot, you also get access to an extended description of your sign. If you’re new to Eric’s audio readings (or just need to review your past year), you’re invited to listen to last year’s reading as a gift from us.

I don’t think I have read anything so achingly beautiful in my whole life as this Virgo reading. I say this not out of drama, but rather out of the way it reads contextually in this particular moment, inviting me into the deep territory of full expression. Masterpiece! Equally terrifying and great fun! Much GRATITUDE. Big LOVE."

— Rev. Jody Lotito Levine, on last year’s Virgo annual

Wishing you all the best for the year to come,

Amanda Painter

P.S. Show your favorite Virgo how much they mean to you: give the 2018 Virgo Astrology Studio and Tarot reading as a gift. They’ll get instant access to the astrology segments, and an email when the tarot portion is ready.

P.P.S. If you only want the tarot portion on its own (called the Virgo Tarot Studio), you can order the Virgo tarot reading individually here. (Please note: this is the same tarot reading as what’s included in the full reading.)

P.P.P.S. You can also still order the full Leo Reading (Astrology + Tarot) — or get the Leo Tarot Studio on its own. Plus, you can now pre-order the Libra Astrology Studio and Tarot here.

Virgo

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — This week, the Sun in your sign is making a long opposition to Neptune in Pisces. You need to be on the alert for what is true and what is not. I would say that under this astrology, first impressions don’t count for as much as they otherwise might. Appearances count for very little, since Neptune can come with a glamour that tends to conceal what lies beneath the surface. It will help if you suspend judgment and rely on multiple sources of information to make your decisions. And with both Mercury and Mars so recently having been retrograde, the more time you take to make important choices, the better. A useful point of orientation would be next week’s New Moon in your birth sign, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 9. Give yourself that much time to work through the questions you’re facing. Stand face to face with mystery, with deception and with any isolation you may be feeling, and refuse to back down or submit. Understand your own personal truth and what it means to you, as all else flows from there.

Libra

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — For the next few months, Venus (the Libra planet) and Mars (the one associated with your opposite sign Aries) will be in a square aspect, which comes into full focus on Oct. 10. This represents both tension in a relationship, and the need for action. Yet you don’t want to make any decisions too soon, or more accurately, without complete information. Note carefully whether you’re at a breaking point or boiling point; that would require a different kind of response. Assuming you are not, though, the forthcoming Venus retrograde will offer you several opportunities, including the occasion to reassess your financial situation and its connection to your relationships; and the opportunity to determine the extent to which your own matters of self-esteem are complicating your situation. Those would best be identified before you make any major moves.

Scorpio

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — The primary impact of the recent Mars retrograde was in the angle of your chart associated with family relationships, particularly on your father’s side. We might take the metaphor and say, relationships as defined by patriarchal thinking. And what, exactly, is that? Well, what have you been dealing with, struggling with, or working your way through? Events have challenged your concept of what a family or community is, and revealed something of the underlying structure. It is fair to say that authority is not distributed in the ways that you suspected. You may have experienced some blowback for your desire to be independent, or been confronted with someone determined not to play by rules that don’t work for everyone. This might have been a turbulent summer for you, emotionally, which could have spread out well beyond yourself. The order of reality and organization may have been challenged by influences outside your control. What happened? I mean, what really happened? It’s now time to do the forensics.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You’re on something of a mission to think differently, and to see yourself as part of a wider world. They are related. Put bluntly, small-minded people live in a small world; broad-minded people live in a wide and expansive world. There’s something about the arrangement of the Sagittarius solar chart that makes this effect especially palpable. You will find, as you open your mind, that your environment also opens up. Or that, at least, is the experiment you can try for the next couple of months, as Mars tracks back over the degrees where it was retrograde, and traverses the rest of Aquarius as well. Freedom of movement begins with freedom of thought. The ability to do or create something is preceded by the ability to imagine it. One’s freedom of movement is preceded by a free mind, the ability to plan logistics, and the flexibility to imagine something other than your current circumstances. This is your quest.

Capricorn

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Self-esteem is such an important issue for you that it may seem like the third rail. You cannot touch it without getting a shock. And it would seem that’s what’s happened in recent months, as Mars retrograde worked its way across your solar chart, asking more questions than it provided answers. Now, Mars has stationed direct in your sign, providing a point of orientation or poignant discovery. You now have the opportunity to use what you know, and apply it in different ways to the different levels of your reality. For example, you might use the formula, “If this is true, then what else is true?” Or, “If I’ve made this discovery, what are the implications in this other area of my life?” Or seen another way, don’t exclude from your awareness the full implications of what you have learned. One of the most significant items might be: your self-worth is not related to your ability to conform to what others think or want. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Aquarius

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You have recently been through a once-, or at most twice-in-a-lifetime astrological scenario, of Mars retrograde in your birth sign. It’s likely this has run roughshod through your life, leading to a substantial, valuable discovery. You now know something that you did not know before, about yourself, and about something much greater. You might say that you’re exploring the intersection of you and everything else: the most important boundary there is. Yet you’re also seeing that this is not a firm line, dividing white from black. You are now getting to hang out within a gradient of experience that has many sublime expressions. From your current perspective, you can study what is you and not you, and the ways those seemingly different things interplay. It’s been said that character is destiny. You are in an unusual position to shape your character right now. While you always can, your current opportunity is a limited time-offer, with unusual ease.

Pisces

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — It’s unlikely you will ever forget the events of this summer, though it’s more important that you remember what you learned. This has come in a few shades: what you’ve learned about yourself, that you never would have previously imagined; what you learned about how others feel about you; what you learned about how people relate to one another, as apart from you. While you’re not necessarily an idealist, you certainly have strong streaks and shades of humanitarian in your personality makeup, and you believe that people really should be able to get along, or at least leave one another alone. Most of the strife in society originates with people’s families, which is also the source of whatever you experienced. It is indeed amazing how much influence dead people can have, though it will be more amazing to see yourself notice their influence and consciously choose what you do not want. Then, remember to be mindful of what you want, say it out loud, and go in that direction.

Mars Direct, Through Aquarius

sept2-2018

We have just lived through Martian Summer, and are about to experience Venusian Autumn.

It would seem like for about half the population or more, this has been a particularly rough summer. We have some pieces to pick up, some damage to assess and repair, and maybe some issues to settle. Mars retrograde in Aquarius will help teach you who your true friends really are. Remember the people who showed up for you, who were loyal to you, and who treated you with respect. They are the real thing.

Dear Friend and Listener:

Tonight’s Planet Waves FM begins with a discussion of Mars direct in Aquarius. Mars is now moving direct through the degrees where it was retrograde. This is not about a repeat but a re-framing of recent past events. You will be seeing the events of the summer from a new angle, having learned what you’ve learned.

sept2-40-2018

Mr. Mackey, guidance counselor for South Park Elementary, and Miss Chokesondick, a teacher, discuss lesson plans for the sex education program. They make a cameo in tonight’s edition of Planet Waves FM.

In the second segment, I challenge the notion that John McCain was a war hero and question where there was anything heroic at all about the Vietnam War.

Our obsession with lionizing McCain seems to be more about a coverup of the global tragedy that was Vietnam than it was about recognizing any actual accomplishments.

Tantra Studio is in two parts this week. I begin with talking about how, for us to make any progress on the issue of “consent,” we need to be easily conversant about sex, and its meaning. I look at how sex education can be considered controversial because talking about sex is a form of sex.

In the continuation, I consider a listener’s question about how we can know about what our partner is experiencing. I take a wide view of this, including the physical and psychic elements, and talk about erotic empathy, which is also called compersion.

I cover the Mars retrograde event and the station direct in the first segment, exploring themes of individuality, groups and the impact of digital.

In the second segment, I look at recent news events, including those surrounding the special counsel’s investigation. In the third segment, I look at the recent verdict against Monsanto for its Roundup herbicide, and then go into the history of the herbicide/pesticide issue. In the last segment, I merge Tantra Studio with a reading of the Pisces Full Moon.

I’ve referenced several resources in the program. Here they are: my coverage of Monsanto and its astrology in The Mountain Astrologer; the article on IBT Labs and the Howard Johnson’s meeting; See No Evil by Vicki Monks; and my article on the history of PCBs as published in Sierra.

Music on tonight’s program is from Vision Quest, the Planet Waves in-house ensemble. The theme music is called “Proximity.” The second two pieces are “Sky Saw” parts one and two, followed by “Letter to Urbana.” Closing theme is “Proximity,” followed by “Digital Thunder.”

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for August 2018

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for August 2018, #1214 | By Eric Francis Coppolino
Aries

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may not consider yourself a creative force of nature, though the time has come to not just experiment with that notion, but to step into it like you’re boarding a vessel of light. Your chart has Leo in the vibrant, illuminated 5th place: the art studio of the zodiac, the creative space where the spark of life is transacted from one person to the next, and one generation to the next. This is more than a physical space; it’s like a transport beam that will carry you, through your own creative process, from one experience to the next, from this phase of your life to the next, from your current idea about yourself to the next. Yet there is one requirement, which is your full participation in your own existence. You must admit that you are connected to core source, which is within you. You personally are not that source, nor do you want the burden of being so. Yet you contain it, and can access your strength as a source of energy that feels distinctly like who you are at your best. Bring the small willingness to engage with the strength that you contain. This strength is one and the same as your sexual energy. Saturday’s eclipse may come with a temporary dimming of the light, as if you’re resetting yourself, reforming your personality, or preparing to take some great inner risk. Do not hold your breath. Rather, keep breathing.

Eric has completed all 12 individual signs of The Sacred Space of Self, the 2018 Spring Reading on Chiron’s transition into Aries, and Mars retrograde in Aquarius over the summer. Order today and get all 12 signs for just $77. You may find our Spring Reading sample videos here.
Taurus

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Where is home? Who is home? What is family, and where do you fit into the constellation of your own world? The answers to those questions are changing, and if you’re living consciously, so will the questions themselves. Think of these things in the widest sense you can imagine: not, for example, your immediate relatives or your neighborhood, but rather that you live on a planet orbiting a star, somewhere in the deeps of space and time. In such a formative moment of your life, you need perspective, broad enough to contain ideas you might not normally experience. I say experience because with Uranus in your birth sign, ideas are less likely to come floating along as little concepts you can pluck from the air and scribble down, but as full-on confrontations with existence. You may suddenly come face to face with vast new possibilities for yourself. You may wake up to the experience of needing to liberate yourself from the world that you currently inhabit, with the accompanying feeling of thunder in your heart. As one born under the sign Taurus, you value stability above all else, and yet you have fire within you. Make room for new possibilities, and welcome them. Some of those will be revelations for how to transform your current existence into something on another level entirely, as if you’ve suddenly solved some vexing puzzle.

Gemini

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — The world we live in seems to be abandoning reason and rationality in favor of being driven by raw emotion. This is probably not your idea of progress, though it’s easy to either get caught up in, or to experience as something crashing over your head. I suggest you use a method taught to all children who grow up near the seaside: when you see a wave coming, dive straight into it, and you will come out safely on the other side. This takes some faith the first few times, though it works. Now, consider this as a model, as a technique upon which you can base others. You’re at a time in your life when you need a clear plan. This is not always true. Sometimes it’s necessary to throw yourself to the four winds and let them take you wherever they may. Now, however, you need, at least, a sketch; a rough draft; a few notes scribbled onto a paper bag, on which you can build. Your chart describes an urgent calling to express yourself. You know you have a gift for this, a natural inclination to put your ideas into words. This is true even if you’re an artist, musician or potter. Indeed, the less you normally transact your life in sentences and paragraphs, the more this applies to you. Keep your pencil sharp.

Cancer

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Your ethics are your values. Your values are your ethics. Your value is what is right and true for you, and that is the basis of your existence. In reality, you can have no other, so trim away everything in your life that is no longer reflective of your actual being, and emphasize what supports you from your core. What you focus on will grow. Therefore, feed the tree that is at the center of your being, and spend a lot of time in its shade, and feeling its love. Think of this as learning how to value yourself. When your value in yourself is strong, you are strong. Yet in truth, we’re talking about something that’s one of the greatest challenges for nearly everyone, in our time in history: establishing self-trust, self-respect, and the primacy of your existence above all else. For someone as service-oriented as you are, it may be helpful to think of this as being the only way you can be of assistance to others. Yet at the moment, this must be secondary: let that be OK. Allow your central purpose in existing to be the organizing principle of your life. If you can do this for a while, you will find real freedom. You will liberate inner resources, and you will get to decide how to allocate them. It is clear from recent events that the winds of change are blowing, for you and for the world around you. In such a time, you need a clear point of orientation. And that would be what you know to be right and true.

Leo Birthdays 2018-19:
Eclipses, Retrogrades and You — Oh My!

“For what it’s worth: never heard anything so right on, dead on, aligned with what I am looking at, aware of, dealing with, leaning into — especially professionally and emotionally. I can’t even list them all — so many subtle angles and aspects that all resonate and add up. Affirming experiences, potentials, challenges. To a T. Wow. Will be getting these transcribed so I can read them over and over.”

— Robyn Landis, on a previous birthday reading

Dear Reader with Leo Sun, Rising or Moon:

Big things are happening in your sign right now. Can you sense it? Are you feeling energized and excited, on edge, perplexed, stuck, like you’re right in the sweet spot of your flow, or just plain curious?

Planet Waves
Remember last year’s big eclipse in your sign? Smile — you have more coming! Photo by Amanda Painter on Aug. 21, 2017.

Any of those responses (and more) would make total sense: Mercury is now retrograde in your sign, and on Friday, July 27, there was a total lunar eclipse in your opposite sign (and relationship zone) Aquarius.

But that’s not all! In just two days, there’s a partial solar eclipse on Aug. 11 — in the same part of Leo where a storied eclipse took place in August of 1999.

Your solar year is getting off to a dynamic start — and the events and energy of these weeks will ripple out, develop and influence your life for the next six to twelve months. That’s why no matter when you listen to your newly published 2018-19 Leo Birthday Reading, you’re sure to discover a wealth of helpful and inspiring insights you’ll be able to get to work with right away.

If you’re new to Planet Waves and Eric’s audio readings, you’re invited to listen to last year’s reading as a gift. The 2017 Great American Eclipse occurred in your sign last year, and it has been reverberating ever since — so listening to your 2017 reading is sure to help you review your year and get oriented on what’s to come.

When you order your 2018-19 Leo Birthday Reading, you’ll receive access to two audio segments of astrology (at least 30 minutes each) and an extended description of your sign, plus custom-selected music by Vision Quest, the Planet Waves musical ensemble.

“Planet Waves has been crucial for me lately as I navigate this topsy-turvy landscape; life is in transition on so many levels and it’s been an incredible resource in my life, especially now.”

— Ronny K.

Thank you again for your patience, faith, and for being a valued Planet Waves customer in these wild times.

Leo

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Let’s travel back in time to the summer of 1999. We can only do this in our imagination, though that may be plenty to observe what you need to get from the experience. First, before you remember any specific events, remember where you lived at the time. Then, consider how you felt: about yourself, and most of all, about the future. It’s likely that things didn’t turn out exactly as you envisioned them, or planned, at the time. You probably faced greater challenges and achieved more than you were expecting to. Today, you’re nearly two decades older, which naturally changes your sense of the future. But I would ask you: where are you today, and how do you feel about your existence? And what do you feel is the journey ahead? Are you still able to envision bold possibilities for yourself? This is vital. Stretch your mind. Push yourself to consider your potential. Now that you are older and wiser, you know that you must use your time efficiently, and meaningfully. I suggest you set some boundaries about what that might mean for you, in a tangible way. For example, you might resolve to spend less time online, and therefore devote a smaller proportion of your life expectancy to anti-social media. You might decide that, above all else, it’s time to travel. You probably have the inclination to drive your life in the direction of one major achievement. Choose well, and one will lead to another.

Virgo

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — There’s a whole chapter of A Course in Miracles devoted to “the fear to look within,” and there are many other references throughout the work to this issue. The situation, as described by this particular work of spiritual psychology, involves some potentially wrenching anxiety about what you might find in there. This stands as a barrier between you and yourself, a kind of primal fear to see yourself for who you are. To embrace your own power of witness, though, you need to set this fear aside, and enter your own self-awareness courageously. Let me be the next person to remind you that shadow is only a temporary blockage or absence of illumination, and you contain a river of light, the source of which is beyond you. Yet it’s possible to block one’s view of the entire universe merely by wearing a blindfold. So remove any blocks to your vision, which in this case would be the willingness to see, and dive into your reality and see where you emerge. Let the world vanish for a moment: the one made of petty fears, squabbles, disputes, and misunderstandings created by ignorance. Let a greater world open up, which you will recognize mainly by your own peace of mind. This is a journey, and it may require daily meditation or communing with nature or with your artwork. Yet if you dependably give yourself some time and space beyond the mundane world, and focus inwardly, you will arrive within.

Libra

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Your role in your community is expanding, evolving, changing: whatever word you like. Yet this may be accompanied by a temporary dimming of the light, and an experience of discontinuity. There is a shift of some kind happening, one that you cannot exactly control, but you can assess and evaluate. Use this to your advantage. In times of change, you can make adjustments to your position and your purpose that will scarcely be noticed by others, but which will make a big difference for you. In essence, a solar eclipse in Leo is about realigning your relationship to your community, however you define that. You may want to do more. You may want to do less. You may want to be a more private person, or a more public one. The change you make will feel natural and at the same time, like a little stretch, or a push, or a leap. It’s not as far as it may seem, and you have the advantage of a wrinkle in time to shorten some of the distance between you and where you’re going. While you’re doing this, make sure of one thing: that you plan for the economics to work out in your favor. This is not merely a marketing project, but one of establishing a new deal. Do this openly, outwardly and wholly transparently. Your value is established. You must trust in this fact, and work with it, and bank on it.

Scorpio

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — The one thing standing between you and accomplishing great things may be the desire to accomplish great things. Real achievements rarely happen on those terms. America’s Next Top Model is never America’s next top model. Great achievements are never great in their time. They’re usually controversial, annoying, or seen as irrelevant. They’re the book manuscript that was thrown in the trash, or the solution to a problem that nobody else can see. Therefore, if you want to be useful to the world — and this you seem determined to be — work on your vision, and fully inhabit whatever you count as your workshop. Take all emphasis off of greatness and place it on quality. Subtract the ideas of others, including what you presume are their expectations, and develop your vision. Yet this must happen beyond the realm of your imagination. Bring your efforts into physical, tangible form, on a daily basis. Stand apart from your reputation, and invest in your abilities. Never count yourself as a master, only as a journeyman, or even a beginner. Meanwhile, in any situation where you’re summoned to leadership or management, honor the politics of the situation. Rely on informal power far more than formal power; that is to say, extend your influence through helpful people, and gently bring others into your plan. Just remember: at this stage of your life, the real work is solitary: the cultivation of your gifts, the refinement of your ideas, and most of all, taking care of yourself.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Despite all the talk about focusing on the “here and now,” you need to focus on the future. That doesn’t mean in any way abandoning your current projects, talent development, or investments. Rather, your primary task is to trace various trajectories into worlds beyond the one you currently inhabit. In doing this, you simply must have a vision for who you want to become. The old and somewhat annoying job interview question — “Where do you see yourself in five years?” — is really a question about how you envision your future. Right now, you might say that a door is open, allowing you a porthole into your own possibilities, and your own potential. Imagine you’re a science fiction author, describing yourself as a character. Imagine the story is unusual, strange and a little spectacular. Imagine the person you’re writing about has some rather unique talents, which will emerge into some form of rare distinction if they are consciously developed, and if the principle of synergy is activated. This idea means “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” Exclude no aspect of who you are from your vision. Include nascent abilities, longings, and forgotten accomplishments in your assessment. Come up with three vastly different possibilities for yourself: for example, the virtuoso musician who becomes a theater director. The search and rescue team leader who becomes a historian. The devoted mother who leads a nation. This kind of thing.

Capricorn

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Tectonic forces are at work in your life. Look up that word. It involves the pressure of one geological plate upon another, which is the power that shapes continents, mountain ranges and oceans. It is the power driving the friction along fault lines. There is no way to understate this idea. As the Saturn-Pluto conjunction of 2020 approaches, the pressure will mount, and there will be more frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions. What you need right now is awareness. You will find a vast resource of information by studying late 2001 through 2005, when Chiron was in your birth sign. Consider everything: all of your relationships, your work, and most significantly, your relationship to yourself. You also need self-mastery, though the first step in this process is self-knowledge. I know this concept has taken a beating lately, which is primarily a function of our whole world being driven into illiteracy by digital consciousness. You must go deeper than you ever imagined. One way you know you’re approaching core territory is that your experiences become indescribable, though you’re also met with a pressing need to reveal them to someone. Lay back on that for a while, and let yourself stand in an inner confrontation with the unknown within you — and what, in truth, can never be explained. Consider another possibility: if you think you want to be enlightened, what you really want is to be a mature adult: someone who can make decisions; someone who honors your values and your desires; one who takes responsibility for the course of your own life.

Aquarius

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) —
Through much of the year, Mars has been retrograde in your birth sign; nothing like it has happened since 1971. This was accompanied by a total eclipse of the Moon two weeks ago, conjunct retrograde Mars, making this perhaps the most unusual spell of astrology you’ve experienced in your current incarnation. Rare and perhaps strange things are likely to be happening in your physical reality as well. A mix of ‘conscious’ and ‘unconscious’ forces are driving events, which means things you may have been aware of previously, combined with certain facts that you missed. Their combined effort is driving you to find yourself, and to individuate in ways you didn’t know were possible. While Aquarius is famous for its liberal-mindedness and commitment to being one of a kind, too often you fall under the thrall of what you perceive as the expectations of others, of cultural patterns, and the need to be seen as a good person. This is simply impossible now, with Mars (the planet of desire) running roughshod through your existence. There is no conforming; there is only taking charge of your life. Expectations are not merely meaningless, but plainly obvious as the toxic influences that they are. In a few days, Mars will retrograde into your 12th solar house, Capricorn, where it will remain for a month (and where it stations direct on Aug. 27). This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to peer within yourself, to gain a new depth of understanding, and to make contact with the influence of your sexuality as a primary, driving force in everything that you do.

Pisces

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You set the terms of your existence. I recognize that we live in a universe of many forces acting upon one another. Right now, the primary thing acting on you is an internal factor, described as retrograde Mars in your 12th house, and a potent eclipse conjunct Mars two weeks ago. This is a description of an inner condition or circumstance, either resulting in the illusion of an outer one, or describing how your power over an outer circumstance can be gained through inner mastery. It is not an easy position to be in, to command the role of what A Course in Miracles calls “the dreamer of the dream.” Even the most sincere efforts to take responsibility for one’s life and one’s choices can be fraught with peril and seeming failure. And as many have noted, the theory that “you create your own reality” is dangerous, especially when someone is in a tight spot, involving something they cannot control. Yet the Mars retrograde process talks about something you can influence through your awareness. The tone of Mars retrograde is about to change, as it re-enters Capricorn on Aug. 13, and something that is now veiled or difficult to access emerges where you can work with it. This involves your commitment to your values and your ethics. It involves your commitment to your work. You live by one set of rules, no matter what you may do.

Eclipse in Leo-Aquarius, and the Courage in Truth

The Sun entering Leo today begins the process of two eclipses on the Leo-Aquarius axis. The first takes place Friday: a total lunar eclipse in Aquarius, conjunct retrograde Mars — followed by a partial solar eclipse in Leo itself.

We’re also approaching the peak of the summer season, with the Sun in its sign of rulership; and one of the cross-quarter days, Lughnasadh (pronounced lunessa), celebrated by neo-Pagans the first week of August, as the Sun nears the Leo midpoint.

Apart from the eclipses, the standout aspect of the week is retrograde Mars opposite Pallas, with both conjunct the nodes.

Pallas is the goddess of protection, law and diplomacy, placed on the cutting-edge North Node of the Moon. This shows a potential direction we might head in: trying to work things out. That might require letting go some of the “strong ego” quality for which Leo is famous.

Mars retrograde in Aquarius describes either a group dynamic, or one person expressing their individuality, pitted against a group of some kind. So we have two dynamics set up against one another, amplified by the nodes. The setup is more a question than an answer. Which dynamic rules? How does the group treat the individual? What is the relationship between the one and the many?

Mars and Eclipses: Welcome to the Internet

Dear Friend and Reader:

It’s been a banner week for insanity here on the planet. The whole Russia crucible came to a boil, over and over again, as Trump stood side-by-side with a man who will go down in history as the greatest KGB agent ever. While that is not your team, one should give credit when due. He knows how to get things done.

The issue of potential Russian meddling in the 2018 midterm election is so vital because that is really the only political potential for any justice or correction of our current situation, slim though it may be.

Our federal legislature is just amazingly lame at the moment; and while a Democratic sweep is no guarantee of anything, it would at least represent some movement away from the stranglehold of one political party controlling all three branches of government, and both houses of the legislature.

When will it be time to heed the words of James Madison: “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”
