Meanwhile, a Mercury-Neptune trine (from Scorpio to Pisces) speaks of deep fantasy — which you might in fact speak about, though Mercury in Scorpio can also keep things pretty close to the vest.

If you seek out art and literature today, mysteries or anything sexy/romantic/provocative may prove satisfying. Spiritual, mystical and occult fields of study also offer the kind of immersion you may crave today.

Getting even more personal, Venus in Scorpio is making a trio of aspects to minor objects, seemingly with a specific purpose. If something is stirring you up beneath the surface (such as emotional turbulence, particularly regarding a relationship), there’s a good chance it’s being informed by past patterns. Do you feel the desire to root that out and move beyond it? You may be facing a threshold of self-understanding, possibly represented by someone else and how you respond to them. Stay focused on what’s in your control: how you feel and the choices you make, not the other person. In 2020 we have not one but two conjunctions that mark the turn of a generation, and of an era in history. On Jan. 12, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn form their once per 33-year conjunction. With the Moon entering Aries in the wee hours this morning, the day could be marked by especially impulsive responses and behaviors — whether yours, or those of people you’re interacting with. Tomorrow’s Full Moon (opposite the Libra Sun) won’t be exact until that evening; but with Aries and Libra signifying ‘the individual’ and ‘relationships’, you can expect any situation to be amplified where those concepts are central.

This is on top of today’s opposition between Venus (love, emotions, relationships) in Scorpio and Uranus (surprises, upsets, awakening) in Taurus. Remember that encountering the unexpected in a relationship (especially one that’s set in its ways) can actually be refreshing, invigorating and conducive to rekindling passion. Of course, shocks to perceived stability can also exacerbate tensions and anxieties; more so if the people involved have been ignoring certain matters that have gotten stale, stuck or were left on autopilot for too long.

If you’re partnered, can you seek out some new stimulation together, and appreciate each other’s zest for life, curiosity and willingness to grow? Adventures that feed the individual soul also foster a greater sense of inner abundance; and this can be shared openly with others to mutual benefit.

Mercury enters its pre-retrograde ‘echo’ or ‘shadow’ phase in Scorpio this evening. The actual retrograde begins on Oct. 31, and could signal a few more Halloween/Samhain hijinks than usual. Between now and then, you may get a little taste of what this retrograde is about, beyond SNAFUs and confusion. With the planet of the mind in the deep-feeling sign of mystery and intensity, you might frame this as your chance to play Private Investigator in your own psyche. What truths are you ready to uncover, and then put to use in your process of becoming?

Note that with the Aries Full Moon approaching on Sunday and a Venus-Uranus opposition tomorrow, certain interpersonal situations could feel loaded — whether with challenging surprises and exciting new possibilities, or with an urge to make big changes, or both. You can roll with it, though a little flexibility, a sense of humor and curiosity will help. The more conscious you can be about how you direct your energy and creativity, the more empowered you’ll likely feel in the face of any pressures and worries that may be cropping up.

The Aries Full Moon and Friends

How’s your sleep this week? And your relationship to authority figures — the ‘real’ ones and the internalized ones? Where are your thoughts going, and how do you feel about it? What about your urges and responses in your more intimate relationships? How conscious are you about using your energy in a creative, focused way?

As we end this week, several planetary events are conspiring to drive questions like those. The headlining act is the Aries Full Moon on Sunday.

Before we get there, Mercury enters its pre-retrograde echo (or shadow) phase tomorrow. On Saturday, Venus opposes Uranus to add a little extra voltage. Let’s take them in chronological order.

Mercury entering its shadow/echo phase Friday evening is your heads up to prepare any and all things related to communication, its related technologies, spending, transit, and how you handle your frame of mind in general. As in: back up your computer, tie up any loose ends with contracts and major purchases, and begin to get back into habits that help to safeguard against sending emails that ought not to be sent.

Mercury won’t actually station retrograde until Oct. 31 (Trick or Treat!). But as you may know, things can sometimes get even funkier prior to the retrograde than during it. Mercury will station direct — still in Scorpio — on Nov. 20.

Venus enters Scorpio this afternoon. And though this placement of Venus signifies passionate emotions and at times greater inclination toward possessiveness and jealousy, the Aquarius Moon could offer some stabilization and a slightly detached mood to help balance things — at least, today and tomorrow. Midweek through the weekend could get a little less predictable, emotionally speaking.

For now, just be sure to notice how you’re feeling and why; the more willing you are to track these shifts to their roots, the better you’ll able to keep perspective. With a Full Moon approaching on Saturday, perspective will be useful.

Also today, Mars in Libra opposes Chiron in Aries. With both Mars and Chiron representing a form of warrior energy, consider two things: one, how you tend to handle confrontations; two, how you would like to handle confrontations. Not everything has to be a blowup or have a ‘winner’ and a ‘loser’; at the other end of the spectrum, trying to avoid all confrontation rarely achieves that outcome in the long run.

There is a middle path: determining what you want and how you feel, and then asking whoever else is involved what they want and how they feel. From there, it’s possible to have a conversation to reach a solution. It’s deceptively simple, yet many people get stuck before they even begin, usually out of fear (of an argument, of consequences, of being told “no”). It’s this fear that amps up the tension. So if you’re feeling afraid of addressing an issue directly with someone, what’s that really about? If you can see it for what it is, chances are you can stop it from running the show — and then work some actual diplomacy.

You might want to watch out for crazy-makers in your immediate environment today. That is, people who can’t seem to be direct about what they want, or who act out primarily to get attention (or seem to). There are more productive ways to be included, and to feel like one has some power, importance and presence in a relationship, whether it’s professional, intimate, creative or some combination. But not everyone grows up with healthy models of how that works, and we all tend to act out our hurts from time to time.

With Venus in Libra opposite Eris in Aries today, you’re on alert that your elegantly balanced apple cart might get upset. You may need to negotiate how to right it (negotiation being a two-way, cooperative process). This aspect is also a reminder to notice if you start to slide into the Eris role — meaning, even if your buttons get pushed, it’s your job to remember how to use your words to describe how you feel and why. Getting passive aggressive won’t fly, and does not count as diplomacy.

Note also that Pluto stations direct in Capricorn today, heralding the final phase of movement on our way to the Saturn-Pluto conjunction in January. Things may start feeling increasingly real from here on out, especially as compared to the previous ten months.

At 4:14 am EDT (8:14:07 UTC), Mercury entered Scorpio. This suggests sharp thinking — and often even sharper tongues. Yet the depth of thought and enquiry possible with Mercury in Scorpio may be most useful, if you can harness the intellectual and intuitive power of this sign. Your new mantra for the foreseeable future: not every situation requires getting the final word at all costs.

Diplomacy could get briefly challenging today. The Sun, Venus and Mercury are all in harmony-loving Libra, yet Mercury is moving into that sign’s last degree. Planets in the last degree of a sign can feel a little antsy; for Mercury in Libra, this could translate as indecisiveness.

Mars is also in the last degree of Virgo until Friday, describing a potential layer of physical/mental frustration around wanting to move forward in a very specific way. Indecision around what to say or how to say it could feed any edginess around wanting to do things ‘just right’. Pholus contacting these planets from Sagittarius suggests the effect could be exaggerated or feel exacerbated.

Even so, once the Moon enters Sagittarius at 7:44 am EDT (11:44:13 UTC), optimism, adventurousness and an urge to ‘just wing it’ could help you to glide over any snags or hesitation. Simply keep adjusting to whatever the day brings, bearing in mind that a series of continual small adaptations will likely bring more relief and forward movement than big decisions and actions might (even if only briefly each time). If you’re currently faced with a pattern you need to stop on the one hand, and a threshold you’d like to cross on the other, this approach could be especially effective.

Any of these urges or sensations of discontent signal subterranean changes that you’re being called to acknowledge and respond to. This situation is described by Venus in Libra squaring Pluto in Capricorn, which indicates a phase of new growth is at hand.

With the asteroid Juno in Virgo opposing Neptune in Pisces, there’s another layer to the relationship dynamics at play today. How specific are you being with a partner about your needs and expectations, and are you seeing the reality of the situation? There’s a suggestion here of jealousy, but it may be based on an illusion, exaggeration or flat-out fantasy. It could also be that you’re responding to a partner’s focus on details (or even their nit-picking) with your own rosy insistence that everything’s just fine. Is it, really? Remember that seeing where things could improve is not an admission of failure; it’s an opportunity to negotiate a clearer agreement, and a way forward that better meets everyone’s needs.
