What is Revealed: Venus Conjunct the Sun

Dear Friend and Reader:

The astrology of the moment is the Sun’s interior conjunction with Venus. This is the midpoint of the Venus retrograde process (please see SKY section below), when Venus passes exactly between the Earth and the Sun. Venus stations direct on Jan. 31.

Planet Waves

Venus retrogrades don’t tend to cause the commotion that Mercury retrogrades cause, though I consider them significant events in part because any inner planet retrograde brings interesting revelations, and also because Venus is retrograde the least of all the planets, just a shade over 7% of the time. That is, Venus is retrograde for six weeks out of every 18 months.

On Saturday we will experience the first interior conjunction of Venus and the Sun since the infamous transit of Venus in June 2012. That was a conjunction so exact that, weather permitting, you could actually see Venus seem to walk across the surface of the Sun. And it was so rare that a transit of Venus will not repeat until 2117.

Even without a transit, I consider the conjunction significant, since it’s a major moment in the Sun-Venus cycle. Adding emphasis, this one takes place at 22 degrees of Capricorn, making aspects to numerous other points, including Saturn, dwarf planet Eris, asteroids Vesta, Ceres, Tantalus and centaur Pholus. It will be interesting to see what this brings out into the open, since it makes contact with so many other hotspots in the sky.

Sun-Venus in Capricorn will be exactly sextile Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn, which reflects the relatively calm, stable influence of this Venus retrograde. As I mentioned once before, we have not had a Venus retrograde exclusively in Capricorn since the winter of 1802-1803.

Since then, till now, when Venus stations retrograde in Aquarius, it dips back into Capricorn. This time, however, the retrograde starts and ends in Capricorn, for the first time since the administration of Pres. Thomas Jefferson.

Meanwhile, solar flares earlier in the week resulted in this storm warning from the federal government: “NOAA forecasters estimate a 90% chance of geomagnetic storms on Jan. 9th when a CME is expected to hit Earth’s magnetic field. The speed of the solar wind around Earth could spike to 700 km/s (1.6 million mph) shortly after the impact, sharply compressing Earth’s magnetosphere. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras.”

We have been watching Sun spots and solar flares for a while, and I have not noticed any specific kinds of events or tendencies associated with them. However, given the rest of what we know about astrology, I think it’s unlikely that they could have no effect whatsoever.

In The News: A Little is Not So Bad

One trend I’ve noticed this week is a series of articles on the Internet claiming that the dangers of radiation leaking from Fukushima are minimal or nonexistent. We find out which environmental experts would feel confident swimming along the Japanese coastline or chow down a family-sized boat of yellowtail sashimi. The articles seek to debunk another meme, which I first noticed in late December, describing how the situation is actually a lot worse than we’re being told.

Planet Waves
This was the explosion at Unit 3 on March 14, 2011, which blew apart the building and injured 11 people. There is some speculation that the pattern of smoke looks more like a mushroom cloud than a hydrogen gas explosion.

In November, purported removal of spent fuel assemblies from the severely damaged Unit 4 structure began, and then news of that process went quiet, lending itself to all kinds of speculation.

In December and early January, there were numerous citizen reports of increased radiation levels in the United States [this link provides a summary], as well as confirmed reports of another bout of steam leaking from the plutonium-contaminated wreckage of Unit 3 (see ECO section).

Additional releases from Unit 3 are troubling because it’s the one reactor at Fukushima Daiichi that was known to contain MOX or mixed oxide fuel, which means that it has plutonium. This is the most lethal radioactive substance in common usage, the element invented to create the hydrogen bomb. Among the reasons plutonium is being used in commercial nuclear reactors is to get rid of the excess so that it’s not used by terrorists to make nuclear bombs. But the resulting nuclear waste is just as toxic.

Dr. Helen Caldicott has said that even a millionth of a gram (a microgram) of plutonium embedded in someone’s lung can cause lung cancer. So you don’t want to mess with any of this stuff, it should be nowhere near people and it should not even exist. But it does, and it’s become something of a trend to use plutonium in commercial nuclear reactors.

One such assurance of safety was repeated by the noted American astrologer Rob Brezsny, in his newsletter this week. I am in a dialog with Rob about this; here is my most recent reply, which I am posting as an open letter. Rob’s horoscope column appears in about 130 newspapers and he has correspondingly high web traffic.

Why You Should Be Concerned About Fukushima Radiation

Hi Rob,

In your newsletter this week, you said, “The scaremongering about Fukushima is grossly overblown,” and provide a link to this site, in which the author assures us that it’s OK to eat fish from the Pacific Ocean as long as they’re not from Japan, and declares that radiation reaching the West Coast “will not be dangerous.”

Planet Waves
Radiation map of the continental United States from December 2013, showing increased levels toward the western U.S., closer to Japan. The data is from the Nuclear Emergency Tracking Center, a private organization that aggregates government data.

The author states almost gleefully, “I certainly feel safe eating sustainable seafood from the Pacific and so should you.”

My problem with your statement is that as far as the public is concerned, you’re saying don’t worry, and you’re not asking any questions at all. “Grossly overblown” does not even suggest you believe there might be a potential question.

Why are you eager to spread the word that Fukushima is safe, or safe until proven dangerous? The problem does not have to be imminent disaster and the threat of relocation. Fukushima will proceed as a slow-motion crisis as the radiation gradually diffuses from the wreckage to the rest of the environment, concentrating in living creatures and working its way up the food chain. We have been covering this since the beginning — it’s a very serious situation, and it’s not getting any better.

There is no safe level of radiation exposure. Additionally, not everyone similarly situated gets the same exposure from an incident. Someone who eats one contaminated fish is going to have a problem, whereas someone who does not eat that fish won’t have that particular problem. But there is no way to predict who will and who will not eat that one fish. Every fish is not being tested.

“Don’t eat fish from Japan” is ridiculous advice. Everyone who eats sushi eats fish from Japan, and it’s obvious that some fish from Japan will be improperly classified and sold as non-Japanese product.

Vegetarians are not immune. Many edible plants collect and concentrate radiation. This creates direct exposure and it moves up the food chain, ending up in dairy products and elsewhere.

Planet Waves
Image from Russian Television International report on concerns about contaminated fish getting into the food supply.

Not everyone’s body responds to exposure the same way. Some people, such as immune-compromised people, and cancer patients on chemotherapy, are much more vulnerable. Children and small animals are more vulnerable.

Further, we all have a body burden of artificial radiation, from X-rays, radiotherapy, nuclear bomb testing that exposed the entire U.S. population, contaminated food from those tests that was distributed to the population, leaks from nuclear reactors, microwave ovens, irradiated foods, cellular telephones and cell towers.

The entire West Coast is receiving radiation from the Manhattan Project dumps at Hanford, WA (via water table contamination), which then goes into the Columbia River and is transported to the Pacific and carried up and down the coast by currents.

So we already have a lot of radiation we’re dealing with; let’s not forget increases in UV radiation exposure from ozone depletion. Therefore, whatever we get from Fukushima is adding to an already serious problem. Since when does adding any more make it OK?

Since when, with the cancer rate hovering at around 50%?

I do not need to present any evidence of any specific danger to be ‘right’. I don’t have to find a thousand contaminated fish or even one of them. My role is to educate people about the precautionary principle: what do you believe, and what do you do, in the face of missing or incomplete information, especially when there is a known point source, a known contamination crisis?

Planet Waves
Ordinary X-rays add to our total body burden of radiation. Each dose adds to what is already there.

I am pointing out that the blanket conclusions or assurances of safety cannot be right. And this is what the nuclear industry and its proponents always do. The exposure is always the equivalent of a dental X-ray.

Blanket assurances don’t stand up when there is a known deadly substance present, combined with insufficient data, a data blackout, a propaganda stream, conflicting data or facts plainly indicating a problem — such as the established fact of all Pacific tuna being contaminated.

In any environmental incidents I’ve ever covered or heard of, from Love Canal to 9/11 to Three Mile Island to SUNY New Paltz, the goal of officialdom is to minimize the perception of danger.

The official position is always that something is safe until proven dangerous, and that anyone talking about the dangers is an alarmist. The official position is that a little is OK and it’s fine if you only kill a few people (that’s known as risk assessment).

The popular position is usually “please, tell me it’s safe.” The precautionary principle says, you must do a worst-case analysis. However, if that were applied to nuclear power, it could not exist, because the worst case, which keeps happening, is so bad that society cannot actually deal with it.

Fukushima cannot be cleaned up; this mess will torment hundreds of generations into the future, who will never know a moment of benefit from the electric power that was generated by the plant.

You said: “Further evidence of sloppy research fed by emotion, not objective reporting: You say that Woods Hole is ‘chopping wood for the nuclear industry’. Do you have even a shred of evidence for that claim?”

In my experience, anyone who repeats knowing lies about a nuclear incident is doing the work of the nuclear industry, particularly if they bear scientific credentials. It does not matter if somewhere else they say they have their concerns; that merely creates the appearance of balance. Direct evidence of collusion is unnecessary. The fingerprints are in the point of view that supposedly objective scientists share with profit-driven, verging-on-psychotic proponents of nuclear power — that all is well. Don’t worry. I would feed that to my kid.

Planet Waves
In 1980, then-Gov. Dick Thornburgh and Harold Denton of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission talk to the press about the Three Mile Island partial meltdown. Photo: Univ. of Pittsburgh.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute knows better than to declare the fish and the oceans safe without even saying there are real questions. By definition that is deceptive.

On their FAQ page, they leave out issues like biomagnification, as well as migratory fish and the known extent of the plume. They are taking a position used by polluters in the ’60s and ’70s that all you need to do is water down the toxins. Then through bioconcentration, various biota gather it right back up the food chain, where we humans reside at the very top.

Any responsible scientist who wants to minimize the danger would say, “based on the data, we don’t know,” but the problem with that is there is a lot of data indicating a widespread, uncontained problem.

The ethical position when there is missing or insufficient data is to tell people that they must take the time to inform themselves, and make their own decision once admitting that there are certain variables. But we do know enough to know there is a serious problem.

The ethical position is not to declare the story overblown. Declaring a rumor overblown is one thing — but you would have to specifically debunk THAT specific rumor to do so.

Just because there were a series of Internet memes suggesting much worse dangers, some of which may have been exaggerated, does not make them wrong. They are based on something real — Unit 3 is releasing steam, as confirmed by TEPCO; Unit 3 melted down; it has MOX plutonium fuel, and a lot of old assemblies in the spent fuel pool.

You wrote: “I wonder if you think that Scientific American, National Geographic, and the National Academy of Sciences have joined Woods Hole in chopping wood and carrying water for the nuclear industry. They all have downplayed the dire doomsday prophecies circulating on Facebook, the Internet, and the Alex Jones radio show.”

This is not a case of either NAS or Alex Jones is right. That is a false dichotomy. As regards Scientific American, they have lied about dioxin before, along with many other ‘reputable’ journals repeating a series of fraudulent studies paid for by Monsanto. None of the secondary sources ever retracted their articles once the studies were proven fraudulent in later litigation.

Planet Waves
Robots working on the first floor of the Fukushima Unit 3 reactor building, a place too contaminated for humans to go.

National Academy of Sciences is all over the map. What they say is not true just because they say it; they are an entity very close to the government and must respond to political forces, like most other large institutions. One recent case I know about is their declaring the anti-HPV Gardasil vaccine safe, when there are numerous reports of severe reactions and some deaths in young girls who got the injection. On the other hand they are realistic about climate change.

Supposedly credible sources may downplay Alex Jones but that does not make him wrong. They may downplay the increased radiation levels that citizen monitors are reporting, and the leaking steam from the MOX wreckage at Unit 3.

The thousands of tons of spent fuel on the Fukushima site present a real and ongoing threat, and if there is an expanded incident, it will be too late to prepare after the fact.

Three hundred tons of radioactive water each and every day leaking into the Pacific Ocean is not a joke. It is nothing to minimize. All that radiation goes somewhere, and it’s showing no signs of stopping.

Fukushima is in the path of typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis. There are thousands of tons of uranium and plutonium fuel on site. All of the buildings are in bad shape and most could not withstand another serious quake. There is nothing stable or safe about this situation, and it’s so toxic that reporters cannot even get near it for more than an hour.

Meanwhile, Japan has passed a law making it a crime to reveal or report on ‘state secrets’, including Fukushima. And to give one example how that works in the United States, MSNBC, the closest thing to real TV news, is co-owned by GE, the company that manufactured the reactors. So we cannot trust what is in the media.

That is what we need to be talking about.

With love,

Ring That Bell

This weekend is the midpoint (or halfway-done point) of Venus retrograde. Venus passes exactly between the Earth and the Sun, forming what is called the interior (formerly known as ‘inferior’) conjunction. In an astrological chart, Venus and the Sun align to the degree and minute. This happens Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7:24 am EST. Venus will station direct on Jan. 31, so we have about three weeks to go.

Planet Waves
Three images of Venus transiting the Sun last year, as it was retrograde in Gemini. Its retrograde through Capricorn will not take it across the face of the Sun during their conjunction Saturday. Images: NASA/LMSAL.

For those who are following this interesting and fairly rare transit (Venus is retrograde least of all the planets, just a shade over 7% of the time), this may be a moment of revelation. Venus retrograde is a kind of review phase. In Capricorn, you can think of it as a review of your relationship to tradition and traditional values.

They deserve to be questioned. Sometimes the ways of the past are wise and enrich our lives (such as eating actual food, having conversations and reading books). Sometimes they make no sense at all (treating people as possessions, taking advice about sex from priests, smothering ourselves in self-deception).

The Sun conjunct Venus in Capricorn sets the agenda of asking yourself whether you do things the way they were done in the past, especially if that’s your only reason for doing so, and what the impact of this is on your life.

Venus conjunct the Sun is a moment of revelation; it’s as if some light comes in a dark place, suddenly allowing you to see where you are and what’s around you. It’s an original thought within a maze of pre-programmed thinking.

The interesting thing about this conjunction of Venus and the Sun is that it aspects many, many other planets around the solar system. The conjunction is sextile Saturn. It’s loosely opposite Jupiter. It’s making aspects to many minor planets — Vesta, Ceres, Eris and Tantalus. It rings the bell of the entire sky. And that bell is a wake-up call.

Planet Waves
Simplified chart for Venus conjunct the Sun, with Mercury also in Capricorn. Also shown (clockwise): Pholus in Sag, Saturn in Scorpio, Ceres and Vesta in Libra, Jupiter and Black Moon Lilith in Cancer, Moon in Taurus and Eris in Aries. See glyph legend here.

This combination of factors, particularly Vesta, Tantalus, Eris and Ceres, speak to our traditions around ‘yes’ and ‘no’. For example, there is a tradition to think of yes and no in moral terms — doing the right thing. Yet in reality they are more negotiated in business terms: is the price right? The tradition of covering over a business motive with a moral motive is one that would benefit from being questioned.

The chart illustrates a situation where, if you ask one question, you will inevitably ask another. It shows how certain issues you think are unrelated actually reach into all aspects of your life. That’s the nature of asking real questions, and part of why I think they are so unpopular. Yet at a certain point they start to ask themselves.

This can come in the form of a crisis on the approximate theme, “How did I get where I am today?” and “How can I change this thing that’s been the same forever?” Or, “Do I have the guts to tell the truth?” Not telling the truth is a temporary expedient that, unfortunately, becomes a permanent non-solution. That is smothering. Open your inner ears and listen — to whether you’re rationalizing something, denying a basic need, or doing something merely because it’s how you did it in the past.

And if your reason for that is, “It’s the traditional thing to do,” I suggest you put that under the microscope and see what it’s made of.

Steam and Radiation On The Rise

Steam has recently been seen emanating from Unit 3 at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. TEPCO, the Japanese utility in charge of operations at Fukushima Daiichi, confirmed that steam had been detected by surveillance cameras on Dec. 19, 24, 25 and 27.

The steam appears to be coming from the fifth floor of the building, which was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. This is the first report of steam rising from that location since July 2013.

Planet Waves

TEPCO has no explanations for the source or cause of the steam, and workers cannot access the building because radiation levels are too high to go near it.

Unit 3 suffered severe damage from an explosion caused by a hydrogen buildup that breached the containment vessel.

The reactor core of Unit 3, containing fuel comprising uranium and mixed uranium and plutonium (called MOX or mixed oxide nuclear fuel) went into full meltdown, likely melting into the earth below.

Meanwhile, the spent fuel pool in Unit 3 contains 89 tons of highly dangerous MOX nuclear fuel, along with the 514 spent fuel assemblies. The fact that MOX fuel is stored on site at Fukushima Daiichi raises serious questions about the advantages of its use, and the risks associated with highly toxic and lethal plutonium.

Explanations for the rising steam include the possibility that the melted core, now turned into corium, may have reached the groundwater beneath Unit 3, resulting in the release of vapor. Back in July, TEPCO hypothesized that rainwater falling upon stray fuel pellets and fuel rod fragments in the containment vessel could be causing the steam.

There’s also the chance that spontaneous fission could be occurring in the storage pool as water is heated and evaporated, leaving the fuel rods exposed and melting down, releasing radiation into the air. With 89 tons of MOX fuel in that pool, this release of radiation would contain highly volatile plutonium. There is no official data yet to determine what exactly is happening.

Planet Waves
Video image of independent testing in St. Louis indicates levels above background in St. Louis.

Back here in the U.S., a rise in radiation levels has been reported in both California and Missouri, which leads to speculation regarding the impact of Fukushima fallout. In a recent video, titled “Fukushima Radiation Hits San Francisco,” a man named ‘Dave’ records radiation on the Northern California coast at 5 times higher than normal background levels — a 500 percent increase over previous readings.

Two videos recorded in St. Louis, Missouri (available here and here) in December reveal elevated levels in snowfall. The tests show radiation levels three times higher than normal background radiation, using three different Geiger counters on two separate occasions.

Officials have come forward dismissing the dangers associated with this spike in radiation, claiming there is no connection to Fukushima. Their position, as usual, is that there is no threat to public safety. Unfortunately, the real danger is unknown. Elevated levels of radiation in our air and water imply radionuclides in our food chain.

Bioaccumulation, the buildup of these toxins in human tissues, cannot be measured with a Geiger counter. Each dose of radiation adds to what is already in the body.

West Virginia Solvent Spill Endangers Thousands

A dangerous chemical spill Thursday morning into the Elk River in West Virginia has contaminated the Kanawha Valley water supply, affecting about 300,000 in nine counties, prompting emergency declarations on both state and federal levels. It’s uncertain how much of the chemical, 4-Methylcyclohexane Methanol, was leaked.

The spill was upstream from one of the largest water processing facilities in its region. The chemical appears to be a chlorinated solvent that is deadly, that attacks the heart, lungs and kidneys, and can cause systemic damage. A state official claimed it was not toxic if swallowed.

Planet Waves

According to a federal website that lists chemicals, the chemical is lethal in relatively small doses. When lethal, symptoms include, “severe, acute parenchymal and vascular damage in the heart, liver, and kidneys and vascular damage in the lungs. These lesions were generally accompanied by cerebral edema and congestion. Sublethal doses caused depression [of the central nervous system] with clonic/tonic convulsions, salivation, and lacrimation. Animals given sublethal doses showed liver damage on autopsy.”

The ban on using tap water for drinking, cooking, bathing or washing clothes prompted a run on water from supermarkets and convenience stores, which by nightfall were reportedly almost sold out. Schools and restaurants in the area were forced to close.

“Right now, our priorities are our hospitals, nursing homes and schools,” said Governor Earl Ray Tomblin. “I’ve been working with our National Guard and Office of Emergency Services in an effort to provide water and supplies through the county emergency services offices as quickly as possible.”

The leak, first reported on Thursday at 11:40 am EST, came from a 48,000-gallon tank at Freedom Industries coal treatment facility about a mile upriver from the West Virginia American Water Co. facility, said Tom Aluise, a spokesman for West Virginia’s Department of Environmental Protection. When the chemical reached the water treatment facility, it contaminated the tap water.

Why Was it Time for Some Traffic Problems in Ft. Lee?

Wednesday, a collection of emails in the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal in New Jersey were made public. Among those messages: “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” wrote N.J. Gov. Chris Christie’s deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, to the Christie ally at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Aug. 13.

Planet Waves
N.J. Gov. Chris Christie visits the Liliputians. AP photo.

“Got it,” replied David Wildstein, who in his testimony before the state senate Thursday pleaded the 5th (the right to remain silent) over and over again.

His attorney told the senate panel he would start answering questions were he given state legal immunity by both N.Y. and N.J. as well as federal immunity (all three jurisdictions are involved). That sounds intriguing.

For those who have not been following this story, Christie is the brash Republican governor who during Hurricane Sandy helped Pres. Obama win the 2012 election by acting friendly toward the president when he came to visit the scene of devastation. This infuriated the Romney campaign — especially when Gov. Christie refused to tour New Jersey with the Republican presidential nominee at the peak of the campaign.

The Port Authority, which runs the George Washington Bridge, under orders from Christie’s office, shut down three of the four lanes onto the world’s busiest bridge, the one along I-95 that takes you from New Jersey to Manhattan. This was done for four agonizing days — not previously announced and for no obvious reason. The result was that the entire borough of Fort Lee was gridlocked for four days as four lanes of traffic tried to cram through one tollbooth. Tens of thousands of people endured an hours-long traffic jam. Emergency vehicles and school buses could not move.

Initially there was speculation that this was done to get back at Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat, for not endorsing Christie, a Republican, in his re-election campaign. But that fell apart when Sokolich told CNN that he was never asked to endorse Christie. MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, who put the story onto the national radar with her persistent coverage, devoted her whole program Thursday night to another possibility — that it involved not the election but a long battle over state Supreme Court appointees, aimed at the Democratic leader of the senate who represents Fort Lee.

In a long, boring news conference Wednesday, Christie said he was upset about allegedly being lied to, but never mentioned how his office’s action wrecked things in the town for four solid days. He maintained the ruse that he thought the lane closures were part of a traffic study, right up until Wednesday when the email came out.

Christie claimed not to know anything about traffic studies, so how could he tell that the excuse wasn’t true? Having covered land use and industrial development in New Jersey, I can tell you this: any New Jersey politician who says he doesn’t understand traffic studies is like a person from Colorado saying they don’t know what skiing is.

Planet Waves
The 12th house is the one on the left, right above the horizontal line (which is the horizon). The concentration of planets there says there is some huge secret waiting to come out. The planets represent the government and its leadership, as well as the king or state leader — they are all in on it. This scandal goes right to the top.

Why did this happen and what are the implications for Christie, who was widely seen as someone who could get the Republican nomination in 2016 and also appeal to many moderates? Bridget Kelly’s email giving the order to shut the lanes has a time stamp, and a time stamp means we have a chart for the time the order was given — something that’s extremely rare to have.

The chart tells a very different story than Christie offered the public in his nearly endless news conference Thursday. Not only does he know what a traffic study is, he knew about and was in on the whole scenario. The chart for the lane closure order warns that the whole event is going to be shrouded in deception. Neptune is right on the 7th house cusp. That fog lasted a while, but the heat of the Sun burned it off.

Looking at the eastern side of the chart, Gemini is on the midheaven ruling the government (all the way to the top), and Virgo is on the ascendant ruling the question itself. Mercury, which rules both signs, is in the 12th house (which represents conspiracies). The leader of the government is in the 12th, along with a cluster of other planets. They are trying to keep this whole thing tight, top secret and under wraps — that’s the 12th house.

Leo, the sign that represents the president or the king, is on the cusp of the 12th. That indicates that the governor presided over the whole matter. The Sun, ruler of Leo, is also found in the 12th. He’s right in the mix, fully aware and sharing responsibility for the whole thing. To sum that up, the planets that rule the official government and its leadership, as well as the sign associated with the king, and its ruler, are all crammed into the 12th house.

This is your classic 20 pounds of shit in a 10-pound bag kind of scandal. And it wasn’t staying in the bag. The fact that the email got out, making it clear that the traffic jam was payback, that he fired a member of his team and accused her of lying, and that his appointee at the Port Authority said he wanted immunity from the feds, New York and New Jersey tells you that there was criminal activity involved. I think that will come out around the time that Venus stations direct on Jan. 31.

The 12th is sometimes called the house of self-undoing. Christie has a very strong presence in that house, and to me this chart looks like he’s going to come fully unraveled. He will not even come close to the 2016 nomination. He may not even survive his second term.

New York’s Medical Marijuana Law: A Bit Stale

In his State of the State address on Wednesday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced his plan to activate a 33-year-old law authorizing hospital review boards to prescribe medical marijuana in a limited number of cases to patients with ‘life or sense threatening conditions’.

“We’re pleased to see New York officials taking this seriously, and this is a significant step in the right direction,” said Kris Hermes, spokesman for the medical cannabis advocacy group Americans for Safe Access. “But it’s seriously flawed in several ways. It’s not necessarily going to provide access for those who need it.”

Planet Waves
Cartoon by Matt Bors. See larger edition here.

The idea of using hospitals as distribution points is probably a non-starter. “Only one other state has tried this, Maryland,” says Hermes, “and we don’t consider it an actual medical cannabis state — their law relies on academic medical centers. As long as marijuana is federally classified as a Schedule 1 narcotic, most — if not all — hospitals will be unwilling to work with the state on this.

“The sources are also problematic. The law refers to obtaining the medicine from the federal government or from law enforcement seizure; the federal government is not going to be providing cannabis to New York. They might be able to get seized marijuana from law enforcement agencies, but that raises serious doubts about the quality they could provide.”

Hermes and other medical cannabis advocates would like to see the state legislature pass the Compassionate Care Act, establishing an independent system of dispensaries and caregivers. Bills legalizing medical marijuana have passed the state assembly four times, stalling in the Senate; more than four-fifths of New Yorkers support legalization. “You can’t have it both ways — claim to be supportive while making it prohibitively difficult to qualify, register and obtain medicine,” Hermes says.

While refusing to revise the Schedule 1 status that declares cannabis to be of no medical value, the U.S. government filed a patent on cannabinoids in 2003 as an anti-oxidant and neuro-protectant in treating conditions as diverse as cancer and traumatic brain injury.

Another bill introduced in December would make New York the third state in the U.S. to legalize and tax marijuana, providing for regulated sales such as are now allowed in Colorado where, according to the Huffington Post, sales figures exceeded $5 million in the first week.

USDA Buys Produce for Distribution to the Poor

The United States Department of Agriculture said on Monday it will buy up to $126.4 million worth of surplus domestically produced fruits and vegetables under The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) program. It will then distribute cherries, processed apples, cranberries, fresh tomatoes, wild blueberries, and raisins to states for passing on to local food banks, shelters and charities.

Planet Waves

This action comes after $5 billion in cuts last November in the federal food stamp program — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The program provided food stamps to about 47 million Americans.

Department of Agriculture Under Secretary Kevin Concannon said the high number of food stamp recipients was “principally driven” by the state of the economy. “While it’s recovering in some aspects, there are millions of people that are struggling,” he said.

Fresh produce is usually in short supply at food banks and shelters, so this particular help will be especially welcome. Fruits and vegetables are considered ‘bonus foods,’ and are paid for under a USDA directive. The purchase is part of the surplus removal program, which allows the USDA to purchase foods to help stabilize prices in agricultural commodity markets by balancing supply and demand, while providing healthy food to low-income households.

Former NSA Insiders: Agency Could Have Prevented 9/11

In the wake of Edward Snowden’s revelations about the extent of National Security Agency (NSA) spying on millions of harmless souls, four former high-level NSA employees have written to President Obama detailing exactly how the agency dropped the ball prior to the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center.

Planet Waves
United States Intelligence Community — possibly not an oxymoron?

Representing Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), the experts claim that the talking points currently in play about the NSA’s proper role form “an artful list, much of it designed to mislead,” and go on to name bulk data collection practices as a major part of the problem.

The memo details the process by which an effective, comparatively inexpensive data collection and analysis program entitled THINTHREAD, developed in-house at the NSA, was trashed in favor of a much more expensive contractor-developed program called TRAILBLAZER at the behest of then-NSA chief General Michael Hayden. THINTHREAD, it turns out, had been developing information that might have averted 9/11 but was lost in the infighting and power-playing going on.

The VIPs wish to meet with Obama and discuss what has gone wrong with the NSA and how to problem-solve, but express doubt about their chances of gaining an audience; this is, they point out, the 28th such memo since 2003.

“You and the country are ill served by the reluctance of your national security advisers to give a hearing to former intelligence insiders like us,” reads part of the memorandum. “Your advisers may be too inexperienced to realize that circling the wagons is not going to work this time. This time the truth will out.”

FDA Edging Closer to Trans Fat Ban — Very Slowly

After years of deliberation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it was prepared to take the next step in regulation of trans fats, or partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) which have been long known to contribute to heart disease. The agency’s preliminary determination is expected to result in trans fats being reclassified as “not generally recognized as safe” (NGRAS), meaning that food manufacturers would need to apply for special permission to include PHOs as additives rather than routinely including them as ingredients.

Trans fats were introduced to the public in the form of Crisco, which the manufacturer claimed was better and healthier than butter. [See related amazing article about the marketing of Crisco.] They then became popular as margarine, and are included in nearly all fast foods. Partial hydrogenation allows the oil to be solid at room temperature.

Planet Waves
Vintage image of Crisco, “Better than butter!”

The Center for Science in the Public, succeeded in 2003 — after a nine-year campaign — in getting the FDA to require that products containing trans fats be specifically labeled as such. As public awareness of the dangers of trans fats has grown, a combination of CSPI pressure and consumer education has led many restaurant chains and snack makers to lower the amount of trans fats in their products or remove them entirely. Trans fats are still much-used in margarine, microwave popcorn, frozen pizzas and other products.

Some communities, including New York City, have instituted local bans. “If trans-fat labeling in the supermarket was the beginning of the end of trans fat, New York’s move today is the middle of the end of trans fat,” said CSPI executive director Michael F. Jacobson in 2006, after the announcement of that city’s ban.

The FDA’s preliminary determination of the chemical substance as NGRAS is not the end of the story, however. The agency announced a 60-day extension of the comment period on the proposed ban at the end of December, meaning that manufacturers will have until March 8 to offer arguments and suggestions.

What might those be? According to the FDA, the extension is for “possible alternative approaches, time needed for reformulation, burden on small businesses, and other technical challenges to removal of PHOs from the food supply.”

Dave Murphy of the watchdog group Food Democracy Now says the sluggish pace of what was hailed as a ‘ban’ on trans fats is unsurprising. “This battle has been going on for several decades now and there’s been stalling and stonewalling at every step,” he said. “It’s a familiar process in DC. In many ways, the FDA is a captive agency to corporate lobbying power. We’ve noticed them extending comment periods on several issues lately; the manufacturers are trying to find a way to delay the inevitable.”

Cheerios Go GMO-Free; Package Will Be Labeled

Yielding to public pressure, General Mills will remove GMO ingredients from its world-famous Cheerios breakfast cereal. In addition, the grocery giant will mark the package saying that it’s made this change, which it announced last week.

“General Mills supports a national solution. There’s a government-approved national standard for labeling non-GM products in Europe and in Canada, and General Mills believes a national standard for labeling non-GM products would benefit American consumers as well,” the company said on the Cheerios website.

Planet Waves
Touted as “heart healthy” and a longtime favorite snack and plaything for toddlers, Cheerios are going for the GMO-free gold.

Original Cheerios (not the flavored varieties) will use non-GMO pure cane sugar instead of GMO beet sugar. The formulation will also be changed to cornstarch made from non-GMO corn.

The oats used to make original Cheerios have never been genetically modified, according to the company. GMO oats are not currently grown in the United States.

The change was prompted by a group called GMO Inside, which made Cheerios its main target in November 2012, citing concerns about children eating cereal containing GMOs. Forty thousand consumers posted anti-GMO messages on Cheerios’ Facebook page, and 25,000 took part in email actions and made calls to the company over the next year.

General Mills has no plans to phase out GMOs from its other cereals in the U.S. “For our other (non-organic) cereals, the widespread use of GM seed in crops such as corn, soy, or beet sugar would make reliably moving to non-GM ingredients difficult, if not impossible.”

GMO Inside is hailing the switch as a major victory. General Mills, whose size and influence can sway the entire food industry, has recognized the commercial value of a GMO-Free label, a real coup for the labeling campaign.

Not everyone is convinced this isn’t greenwashing. Robert Reeder’s comment on Cheerios’ page sums it up:

“They don’t sound particularly enthused about going non-GMO; they saw an opportunity to tweak the original Cheerios, which were almost non-GMO anyway, to capitalize on the non-GMO savvy consumers. It didn’t cost them anything and they look like a good company. They need to go a bit farther than this to convince me they really care about their consumers or actually listen to them.”

Listening to consumers means making the switch to verifiable non-GMO, then telling us about it. Companies that want that kind of accountability can submit their food to the Non-GMO Project for verification and labeling. The Non-GMO Project tests for GMO contamination at the point where the ingredients are the least processed, then they are traced through production to ensure purity. The final step is a consumer label stating no GMOs were found.

You can find searchable lists of verified products, verified restaurants and participating retailers on the website. Cheerios is not currently enrolled in The Non-GMO Project, said Mike Siemienas, Manager of Brand Media Relations at General Mills, in an email.

Coming Soon: ‘Bisexual’ No Longer a Dirty Word

Coinciding with Mars, the planet of libido, making its way through egalitarian, balanced, ‘a little of both’ Libra, the legitimacy of bisexuality and eschewing sexual identity labels gained some mainstream ground recently, when 19-year-old British Olympic diver Tom Daley released a YouTube video.

Planet Waves
Tom Daley is making a splash in the mainstream conversation on bisexuality — and no wonder! Don’t you want him on your team?

Daley discusses his life in the video and announces that he is dating a man — casually adding, “Of course I still fancy girls.”

Those six simple words raised the hackles of entrenched gay rights warriors, who rallied around the worn-thin idea that men who claim to be bisexual are just trying to ease their way across the bridge to being a fully-fledged gay man.

New York Times reporter Michael Schulman called out some assumptions last Friday:

“Bisexuality, like chronic fatigue syndrome, is often assumed to be imaginary by those on the outside. The stereotypes abound: bisexuals are promiscuous, lying or in denial. They are gay men who can’t yet admit that they are gay, or ‘lesbians until graduation,’ sowing wild oats before they find husbands.”

But Lisa Diamond, a sexual orientation researcher at the University of Utah, notes that population-based studies show some degree of bisexuality is actually more common than exclusively same-sex attraction.

In fact, according to noted psychologist Stanley Siegel writing at Psychology Tomorrow magazine, less than 200 years ago people did not worry much about sexuality labels. Siegel writes:

“Men and woman engaged in sex without any reference to a particular label to categorize their desires, nor was there pressure to define one’s sexual orientation. But as American culture transformed to an industrial society in the 1860s, the anxiety aroused by shifts in gender, family, and religion created a perfect storm that allowed new scientific ‘truths’ to emerge. The concept of heterosexuality as the normative standard by which to gauge a healthy life became encoded in psychology.”

Planet Waves

It took almost another 100 years for the Kinsey Report to show that men’s sexuality may not be as ‘fixed’ as people tend to think.

A couple decades later, identifying as ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’ became important for political strength in the fight for equal rights. As those rights are gained, it seems the pendulum is swinging back away from needing sexual categories.

Uranus in Aries is throwing us some curveballs in the ‘self’ department and Pluto is digging up the codified institutional daisies in Capricorn — and younger generations are more often rejecting sexual labels outright, as both Siegel and Diamond note.

Asked for comment, Planet Waves contributor Maria Padhila wrote, “Fluidity in preferences is nothing new. Neither is people who fall squarely on one edge of the rainbow or the other getting upset about such fluidity.” She continued, “What’s new is that these prejudices and assumptions are getting debated in places like the front page of the New York Times Sunday Styles section.”

If it’s on a Times front page today, the tomorrow when it’s no longer news can’t be too far behind.

Bubble Beauty, Thanks to the Cold

If you live in the Northeastern or Midwestern U.S. (or anyplace that gets cold this time of year), you might be getting a little stir-crazy for a chance to play outdoors without the danger of frostbite. When you do go out, consider trying what photographer Angela Kelly of Arlington, Washington, and her seven-year-old son did: freezing bubbles.

Using a recipe they found online for a bubble solution consisting of dish soap, karo syrup and water, the duo went experimenting. The result is a series of stunning images of bubbles in various states of iridescent solidification and gauzy, opaque collapse with the Sun low on the horizon. If you live where it’s warm or don’t have the patience to take photos in freezing cold, Kelly offers prints at her Etsy shop.

Weekly Horoscope for Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, #982 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You have made your point; you don’t have to make it again, especially if it means in any way jeopardizing a relationship with someone who would be happier to cooperate with you than be your adversary. The theme of the next few months is that people will tend to become what you make them. You cast them into the role that you play, so it would be helpful to view the people around you in the most benevolent light. Look for opportunities to collaborate and take any chance you get to defuse potentially hostile situations and let any petty matters fizzle out. You currently live in a somewhat reactive psychic environment and it’s essential that you understand this thing known as projection — seeing things as you are, rather than as they are. Therefore, be friendly, spread good vibes and see how the universe responds to you.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — The thing to learn is how to say yes and no, and mean what you say. Human consciousness runs on a binary system, involving affirming and denying. If you look around, you’ll notice that many, many people lack a clear yes and a clear no. I suggest you observe yourself for a few days and see how you do — are you truly clear about asserting to yourself and to others what you want and what you don’t want? Notice the emotions associated with these two basic positions, which do nothing more or less than guide you through your life. As you get clearer, you will start to have more faith in yourself. You will trust what you know with greater clarity; you will feel less confused; you will have a different sense of the future. Indeed, you will begin to believe that you actually have a future.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You’re about to resume thinking for yourself, after a brief hiatus of filtering your thoughts through someone else’s priorities. It’s not that their priorities are wrong or lack a basis in truth; rather, you know what is right for you and you have had more than enough input from others. At the moment you seem to be working out a set of sensitive details involving an intimate relationship or business partnership, and to do this effectively you need some detachment so that you can think more objectively. One temptation you might have is to proceed from weighting one person’s point of view too heavily to losing yourself to some form of group consciousness, and I suggest you make sure that you maintain your clarity and your independence from that as well. Stop asking people what they think; stop asking for advice or validation. You have all the information you need.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — You can unravel a riddle in a relationship, but it seems to be doing that by itself a little more every day. Pay attention as this happens and you’ll learn a lot. There’s no sense picking a lock when the door is already open. There’s no need to make anything more complicated than it is. Yes, people sometimes reveal themselves in curious ways, and once things are sorted out, what you’re likely to discover in the end is that their motives and needs are pretty simple. I suggest therefore that you start from that premise, and not be too enamored of any seeming complexities, or of your own insecurities. You will be doing a lot of getting emotionally confident this year, and you’re going to learn this one situation at a time; you will learn to trust one person at a time, and come out discovering that you trust yourself.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You’re getting more accomplished than you may think; I know it’s difficult to discern whether you’re actually making progress, treading water, sliding backwards or some combination of the above. The phrase ‘getting more accomplished’ is a pun — you’re indeed getting better at what you do, though mastery is not always evident to the perception of the one who is developing the skill. Your astrology suggests that you’re re-learning something you had already developed long ago, or going to a new depth of cultivating a talent that you usually take for granted. Part of the story involves how you structure your time, and how you work within an organization. Go back to the roots of the story, remind yourself the total history and see what you discover.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Over the next few days you will have a series of opportunities to assert your leadership and your intelligence, though the most significant thing you’ll be tapping into is your creativity. Yet the true artistry of the moment is taking an inspiration and conveying it into something practical and immediate, designed to address a current problem. I’m not talking about art for art’s sake, but rather the use of innovation for the purpose of getting something done, solving a problem or initiating a discussion. You may find yourself in the role of facilitator, and if you can focus the energy of a group, you will find that you solve the problem a lot more quickly. But you’re the one who will seed the group with the idea that it will grow and crystallize. Don’t wait for it to come from someone else. At the moment, you’re the one with the fire in your mind.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — You seem to be working out some deep insecurities, or grappling with self-doubt. Yet I would suggest that what’s really happening is that you’re letting go of some issue that’s been pestering you forever. This seems to involve whether you really need someone else to ‘make’ you feel safe and secure in the world, whether you can do it on your own, and what you need in order to do so. This is an excellent time to question the emotional influence that others have on you, or rather, that you seek and strive for. You need to know when you’re being overpowered, or giving up your power, so that you have a basis for choosing to do something else. This is likely to involve your family. Do they really help you feel safer on the planet? Do they encourage you to go beyond your self-doubts, or make you wonder when you’ll ever get around to getting over them?

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — You have no need to consider anyone, or any idea, a threat. It’s true that some influence is trying to undermine your thinking about something, and it’s also true that you may be frustrated trying to get anything done, hampered mainly by some challenges focusing. You can afford to slow down and think strategically. Retrace your steps and think about three or four moves ahead. But mainly, don’t let anyone undermine your confidence by offering a suggestion or an idea different than you might have come up with yourself. One of the most helpful roles others can play in your life is to do just that. If anyone seems to get under your skin, it’s likely to be because they have said something you were already thinking. While you may not have the answers right now, you definitely have access to the right questions.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You may be looking right into a blind spot. That is to say, you may be looking at something and seeing nothing, or seeing in an inaccurate way. We all know about the blind spot in rearview mirrors; you think you’ve got a full view but there are hidden areas. The one I’m describing is not rearview but directly forward view. Someone may have a point of view that you’re not seeing, or that they are intentionally concealing. Someone close to you may be acting on incomplete or inaccurate information. I suggest that you suss this out gently, but with full intention. Determine what the people close to you believe and find out their motives for doing so. While you’re doing that, be aware that it’s not a good idea to follow people whose point of view you have not examined closely.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You’re getting to know yourself in a new way, and I do hope you’re interested in what you’re learning. You may be sick of the past, questioning the past and/or living in the past. Yet what you’re learning involves getting to the bottom of emotional attitudes and values that are very much a product of your conditioning, but which you have not fully evaluated your commitment to. Once you do, it will be abundantly clear what you want and what you don’t want; what is a positive influence and what is a negative influence. However, as you go about making up your mind what to do about this, beware if any guilt slips into your thinking. Guilt is evidence of control mechanisms that are leftovers from childhood. You are not betraying anyone by making up your own mind about how you feel. If anyone cares, remind yourself that your values are your business.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — It seems for weeks you’ve been trying to figure out how you feel about something, and you’re about to make that discovery. It’s so obvious you might be wondering how you missed it, but that seems to be a theme of your life lately. You can keep this process going and make the next week a celebration of the obvious. Part of the obvious that you may not have noticed are the relationships between many factors in your life that you previously thought of as separate. If you make up your mind that you’re beyond a growth stage where compartmentalization is helpful at all, you will embrace the connections between circumstances, people and influences. You are the one thing they have in common, and any attempt to divide ‘them’ up is really about dividing yourself; the recognition of unity in the world around you is the acceptance of your own integrity.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — If you need something, you know the person from whom you can get it. If you have an idea you want to manifest, you have the resources to make it happen. You’re in a moment of extraordinary manifestation power, so the most significant thing you can do is identify your needs and desires, and articulate them to yourself clearly. Your chart is making an interesting point, something I’ve learned to consider any time I remember, which is that you may already have what you think you need. So before you go seeking and striving, look in your home, close to home and among the people that you know and love the best. In many ways 2014 is a time of reclaiming; a time of receiving; and of remembering. You need less than you think and you have far more than you know.

Dear Friend and Reader:

Most people don’t sit around contemplating the beginnings of eras or sweeping changes to society — most of us live from day to day. As we do, we tend to have a tense relationship with change. Many of us cling to what we have and are familiar with, rather than welcoming anything new. We do this with arguably good cause: change isn’t always helpful, it’s not predictable and based on one fairly common way of thinking, it’s not under our control.

Planet Waves
The “legendary kiss” of Alfred Eisenstaedt, celebrating the surrender of Japan at the end of World War II. One of the most famous photos in history describes the release of aggressive energy into erotic surrender, taken on a collective level. Now that we have wars that never end, there is no culture-wide release of the tension used to support the war; in the current era of history, we have to create these opportunities for ourselves.

When it comes on the collective level, it’s almost always bad news. There is no positive equivalent to 9/11 or the financial meltdown, no collective breakthroughs that balance the damage done by these large events to which we’re subjected. We’re expected to feel victimized, however, then to pay for and morally support wars that we never even ‘win’. The result is that tension and fear have a way of building without a collective point of release.

If there are equivalents to a 9/11, we don’t generally hear about them, or they get little traction. I am not just talking about the thing itself, I am talking about the publicity campaign that goes with it, the media attention, the emotional push and the way that it’s used to turn the page of history. It’s true that there have been Moon landings and Woodstocks, but if you think back through history nearly all of those are in the evermore distant past. Positive developments these days come on a smaller scale. I would love to see as much publicity given to the Seattle Erotic Art Festival as is given to a random act of war. Truly, though: how many people would find that ‘offensive’?

We could have a Good News Channel — but first item in its business plan would have to be no advertising. It would be a miracle if investors put up the money and if people signed up. Who knows, miracles happen.

Yes, there are positive developments in history — though they are usually squashed in the onslaught of fear and negativity that so many people do pay for and devote their attention to. And if not fear, consider how much attention and indeed obsession goes to Hoarders, The Biggest Loser and Long Island Psychic.
This is a bigger problem than it seems. Attention is diverted from real issues and situations needing creative focus, and many people in their escapism are passionately uninformed.

Your old pal Grover. This is Grover Norquist, who is waging a lifelong campaign for taxes to never go up, and he’s succeeding — for corporations and the ultra rich. Photo by Gage Skidmore / Wikimedia Commons.

Historically, this issue of balance may be outside what we choose pay attention to. Consider how something like the Fukushima nuclear meltdown happens in one day and persists forever, causing sickness, anxiety and a threat to countless future generations. Yet when was the last time you heard about a breakthrough that cleaned up the mess, or a development in energy production that made the world safer?

How many times have you heard or read the words ‘tax cut’? Yet when was the last time you personally saw your own taxes go down? With the exception of your team winning the big game (at the expense of many losers, and basically a meaningless development), it’s fair to say that collective events — as we think of the concept, and have it inflicted on us — are almost always negative or destructive.

There is a huge missing piece here, which is evidence of an imbalance on the planet that we live with every day. Even if this missing piece is only on the level of attention, that is saying a lot, because what we focus on multiplies.

We all know of people who try to make a ‘positive impact’ and the ways in which their efforts can seem futile — to the point where many others are discouraged from contributing (or use that difficulty as an excuse). This contributes to a cynical view of life. Cynicism serves many purposes. It reaffirms the habit of negative thinking and negative expectation. It’s also lazy — the ‘it’s all bad’ viewpoint lacks passion or applied intellect. It’s the sign of a lazy mind, one that orients on problems for their own sake and will not open up to solutions.

Many believe that when someone promises you life is about to get better, they’re either a religious huckster or someone trying to sell you something (same idea), and too often that’s true. When you really look closely at the interlocking political, financial and corporate interests, there seems to be no way out, no way to alter the course toward the future that we’re currently on.

The First Peak of 2012 Astrology

Today I am here with another perspective, as we fully enter the first peak of 2012 astrology over the next few days. All of the aspects I’m about to describe are eclipse-like events, which means they function a bit like the Aries Point, merging the seemingly different personal and group levels of existence. Usually this is the kind of thing that comes at us; on some occasions we can consciously tap the energy and make it work for us.

Planet Waves

Chart for the midpoint of the transit of Venus, set for Kingston, NY.

The ‘transit’ is a conjunction of Venus and the Sun that can be seen on the right side of the chart, below the dark line. Venus is blue and has the number 15 next to it; the Sun is the yellow circle. The occultation of Pluto by the Moon is on the left side of the chart, also right below the horizontal line. The two events are nearly simultaneous, with Venus still moving through the second half of its transit when the Moon-Pluto occultation is exact. We are now in the midst of a series of these Moon-Pluto events — the last time they happened was early in the 20th century when Pluto was in Cancer. They only happen when Pluto is crossing one of its own nodes (which are in Cancer and Capricorn), and is thus closer to the ecliptic, where the Moon can contact it.

Astrology offers us the ability to see something happening on the collective level that can influence us personally, and in which we can participate. This participation can, in turn, feed back into the collective and a creative cycle can gather momentum. We think this happens on its own — though advertisers know how to use the process.

Does it take some faith to believe this? Perhaps; though the more you actually work with astrology and study it against the movements of your life, the more clearly you can see it work, though that’s often in hindsight. One interesting way to do this is to track major events against your own diary or key biographical events.

It takes some focus and skill to work with astrological markers in the present, and use them as points of decision. The astrology is telling me that we are now, at this moment, standing at a threshold of personal and collective progress. There have been others; we can only take them one at a time. You may already be feeling this in the form of personal developments, or sensing it as a high-energy potential. Potential is the key word: we’re the ones who get to bring it into experience. This is not so mysterious as it seems. Everything starts with a drawing; you might wonder how a little sketch on a napkin manifests into a skyscraper, but that’s what can actually happen. A turn of phrase becomes a novel; one moment where the light touches the Earth a certain way becomes a film. This is the beauty of human creativity.

The central event is the transit of Venus, which takes place June 5 or 6, depending on your time zone (see related article below about viewing the transit). The momentum associated with this event has been building for a while (eight years, actually), though we crossed the first immediate release point about two weeks ago with the solar eclipse in the first degree of Gemini.

Monday, June 4 at 7:11 am EDT there is the corresponding eclipse of the Moon in Sagittarius (eclipses generally come in pairs, solar and lunar). That’s followed by the transit of Venus the next day (see worldwide viewing details below). This, in turn, is followed by an occultation of Pluto by the Moon (another eclipse-like event) less than two hours after the midpoint of the Venus transit.
There are so many ways to interpret this rare cluster that you could write several books, though it’s the unusual grouping and unique combination of events that speaks to the potential hinted at by these aspects. As all eclipse-like events do, this cluster describes a shift in continuity, most of all — and this applies to every seemingly different level of human experience.

Let’s take the developments individually. The lunar eclipse describes a point of differentiation, where we can see beyond the past and beyond the shadowy levels of our psyche. An eclipse in Sagittarius is a critique of the role of religion and the way that it dominates nearly all of people’s personal cosmology. It’s an opportunity to forget everything you were told was true about God, the universe and everything, and make some observations of your own. What you were told to believe does not matter. What you observe to be true, or aspire to, matters entirely.

The eclipse of Pluto by the Moon is about deep passion working its way through the seemingly dense layers of personality that keep us stuck in patterns, sometimes for decades or even multiple lifetimes. It’s also about acknowledgement of something we don’t usually bring to the surface and perhaps talk about, our psychic scarring and our deepest pain. Without that awareness, healing is much more complicated.

Planet Waves
View of Pluto-Charon system from Hubble. Pluto is comprised of at least four points that we know of — including its binary partner (not a moon) Charon, as well as two smaller satellites, Nix and Hydra. They all orbit one common point. Pluto is a Kuiper Belt Object, now considered a dwarf planet, properly called (134340) Pluto.

Between the two is the transit of Venus. As I described in a recent edition, this is Venus passing so precisely between the Earth and the Sun that if you have a clear view of the Sun when it happens (and if you use viewing glasses), you will be able to see Venus orbit past the Sun with your own eyes — something that very few humans have ever seen.

Barring life-extension developments that few people would be able to afford, nobody who sees this transit of Venus will be alive to see the next one, which takes place in 2117. This points to our unique moment in history, or interval between the eras where we now stand. It’s a little like a fulcrum — when you move a telescope a few millimeters, what you see on the other end is a difference of light years. We’re the ones at the fulcrum moving that telescope, as we make decisions to do the right thing in our lives.

When you’re an astrologer you hear a lot of stories about why people cannot do the right thing, for themselves or for society as they see it. You work with who you can — with the people ready to make real choices not only to improve their situations but to get into harmony with something larger. The ones who want to often do.

Others it’s possible to help get free from various levels of being stuck, and that can go well if everyone is willing to participate. I suggest you be aware of your stories about why you ‘cannot be who you are’, and remember — they are stories, not the truth. Always remember Helen Keller.

However, it’s time to take a step forward. I am going to pass the microphone to a new friend — a psychologist and astrologer named David Tresemer. He’s the author of a book on the transit of Venus, and I interviewed him at the United Astrology Conference earlier in the week. If you listen to just one interview from the many that I did at the conference, this is the one.

So far, this is my favorite take on the transit of Venus, which I’ve been covering since 2004. After our interview, he sent me this summary of his ideas. I am going to publish it in full, then end with a brief commentary.

Here is what he’s proposing, in his own words. It is a form of creative visualization that I don’t usually write about, because it’s too easily confused with wishful or magical thinking. What David is writing about is not wishful thinking, no more than an architect sketching a bridge. Rather, this is about consciously designing our lives, something that I know many, many people want to do.

1. All of our pictures of the world are powered by energy. Giordano Bruno [1548-1600, executed as a heretic by the Vatican — ef] termed these “erotic phantasms.” Eros — passion, desire, love/hate, Venus! — motivates and energizes phantasms — pictures of this-is-just-the-way-it-is, dreams, visualizations, ideas, world-view. Rudolf Steiner, the founder of the Anthroposophic movement, described the same dynamic, though with less colorful terms. “Erotic phantasms” are not to be banished — as in “do away with all desire” — but rather exist to be recognized and worked with actively.

2. Eros/Venus will be stimulated and made turbulent by the transit of Venus on June 5/6 (the exact time is less important as we are in this rare celestial event — by anticipation — right now, and will be for some months). That restless eros will seek images to empower.

Planet Waves

3. Marketers, especially of technological gadgets, have used and will use this undirected eros. Going-with-the-flow on your part accepts that the world will be imagined by corporate marketers.

4. You too can direct that energy of eros — can meet it — by creating pictures of the ideal for yourself and for the world — not vague woo-woo pictures but rather very specific and detailed pictures of anything that arouses your interest.

5. For example, with the situation at Fukushima still teetering on the edge of its largest explosion, you could imagine that the explosion does not happen, that heroic scientists work out how to remove the fuels to a safe place, and that all species develop a capacity to learn from and transform radioactivity. In terms of the mythic images in the Venus transit book, this means envisioning the taming of the magical fire-bird to subdue its expressions on the Earth. Be as specific as possible.

6. If you cannot formulate new pictures — if the world as you perceive it holds you in its thrall, then you can focus on the picture of how-things-are-right-now-as-you-perceive-them each night before sleeping. Look closely at the details, best without judgment, and hold the picture in your mind, for just a minute. Spiritual beings will take it up through the night and in the morning (or in a few days) they will bring you an insight about how to penetrate even the most difficult problems.

7. In any case, take this opportunity to cultivate your relationship to ideals that engage eros behind them. Those imaginations will focus your desire — the restless eros of this time — in ways that will be healthy for you and for everyone else.

Okay.

That is some practical advice. I would add: leave yourself as much free time as you can for the next five days or so. Keep your schedule simple, and do some of the things you love. Most of all, keep an open mind. You may not be able to plan all that much, but if you can hold your vision and be flexible, you will be able to catch some of that Venus solar wind.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

Transit of Venus Viewing Information

As reported in Planet Waves many times, the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun June 5 (or June 6, depending on location) is one of the rarest of predictable astronomical events. It’s happening the day after a lunar eclipse (which is at 7:11 am EDT June 4) and begins mere hours before the Moon eclipses Pluto. We won’t get another Venus Transit for over 100 years — so if you have even the tiniest interest in watching, it should be worth making the effort.

Planet Waves
This is one kind of viewing aid safe for looking at the Sun. You can wear a bear hat if you want, but it is not required for safety. Image: BBC Two.

As luck would have it — and perhaps speaking to the theme of ‘exponentially increasing awareness’ we’ve delineated for these events — this particular transit will be at least partially visible from most of the Northern Hemisphere and some Southern Hemisphere land masses. First we’ll cover the details for how to watch safely, and then where and when to watch.

This cannot be overstated: do not look directly at the Sun at any time without the appropriate eye protection for viewing solar events. Regular sunglasses will not protect your eyes from damage, which you will not feel because the eyes lack pain receptors. You can get inexpensive ‘eclipse shades’ from astronomy equipment dealers, and even Amazon.com is selling them, though certain styles may be out of stock at this point.

Fukushima Reactor 4 On Edge; Radiation in Tuna

It is excellent news that Japan has shut down its nuclear reactors, but there is still a problem in Fukushima Reactor 4 — it is close to the critical mass point. While there are official warnings that its fragile structure and thousands of tons of relatively new spent fuel could not withstand an earthquake, the problem may be far worse.

The radioactive wastes are located high in the structure, and have a long way to fall if the building collapses, and an earthquake is no longer considered a low-probability event — actually, it’s likely. To learn more, listen to this discussion with nuclear whistleblower Arnold Gundersen.

Planet Waves
What is left of Fukushima Reactor 4 after hydrogen explosion and several fires in the wake of last year’s disaster. This reactor houses 1564 spent nuclear fuel rods — recently used nuclear fuel — which are in danger of burning should an earthquake damage the pool they are in, or even if there’s a cooling water leak.

Meanwhile, scientists have reported finding elevated levels of radioactive cesium isotopes 134 and 137 in Pacific Bluefin tuna caught off the coast of California this year — a result of the Fukushima disaster. Cesium 137 is present in seawater anyway (a byproduct of atomic testing), but the two-year half-life of 134 ties it directly to Fukushima.

The discovery illustrates how migratory species can carry radiation and other forms of chemical pollution quite far. Scientists say the levels, while 10 times those found before the accident, are still considered to be within the ‘safe limit’ with regard to eating the fish. Tuna caught going forward will be subjected to new tests. They would have spent much longer in Japanese waters (due to spawning and migratory habits) and therefore could have a very different radiation load — and that’s assuming Fukushima Daiichi’s Reactor 4 does not blow up.

What Would a Sexual Revolution Look Like?

Extrapolating from the Venus Transit’s eros theme, we put the question, “What would a sexual revolution look like?” to our friends on Facebook to get the visioning process active, and got some great responses. We published those as the Thursday installment of the Daily Astrology feature on the PW blog. As you might guess, the answers take some beautifully diverse forms, as does the conversation in the comments below the post. Take a moment to consider your own answer, check out the blog post (and its second part today) and feel free to add your voice and vision to this week’s alchemical surge of life force.

John Edwards: Not Guilty + Mistrial

John Edwards, the former Democratic presidential candidate, was acquitted Thursday of one charge, and the jury was hung on the other five. The judge declared a mistrial on those counts. Edwards was charged in connection with using campaign funds to cover up an affair he had with a staff member, including a pregnancy.

Planet Waves
John Edwards with his daughter and father speaks outside the federal court in North Carolina yesterday, ending with a campaign speech. LA Times video.

This happened while his wife Elizabeth was dying of cancer. “Thank goodness we live in a country that has the kind of system that we have,” Edwards said, apparently referring to how well you can do if you have millions of dollars to pay for legal fees. He faced up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines if convicted and sentenced to maximum penalties.

In a speech reminiscent of David Byrne and Brian Eno’s composition Mea Culpa, Edwards said, “While I do not believe I did anything illegal — or ever thought I was doing anything illegal — I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong. And there is no one else responsible for my sins.”

Edwards was the closest thing we’ve had in a while to a populist candidate, actually paying attention to issues that affect the poor. His most famous speech was the one about there being “two Americas.” He was also a favorite candidate of many women, who viewed him as an advocate. In his comments yesterday, he took the opportunity to campaign for the next stage of his political career, promising to help everyone once he made his comeback.

Edwards seems to have been helped by his astrology; the gods of fortune were smiling on him. Next week’s transit of Venus is exactly conjunct his Moon-Jupiter conjunction in Gemini. We will update you next week if there has been any progress prosecuting George W. Bush, Dick Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld.

UAC Interviews Now Available on Planet Waves FM

On Monday Planet Waves concluded its radio coverage of the United Astrology Conference (UAC) in New Orleans, LA. We’ve been promoting this event for weeks here in the Friday issues, and for good reason: some very creative, intriguing, vibrant people attend this event. We’ve posted more than 20 interviews with these individuals (who include western astrologers, Vedic astrologers, psychologists, a shamanic healer and others), plus coverage of the Media Panel, with more to come. You can listen to these interviews on the Planet Waves main blog, Daily Astrology and Adventure. Look for instructions for downloading to iTunes.

Here’s what some of our listeners have said about the interviews so far:

“Loved listening to the UAC interviews, especially all the psychologists turned astrologers (my degree is in psychology). Hands down, my two favorite interviews were with David [Tresemer] yesterday and the one where you were interviewed! What a fantastic story you had to tell! Keep up the awesome work; you will always have fans.”

— Kat

“Wow! Just listened to the Dale O’Brien interview – blew my mind! My natal Chiron in Pisces leapt into the air at this one (or maybe into the water…).”

— Huffy

“I’ve listened to about four or five interviews now and loved them. I now feel I know more about Vedic Astrology, which I have an affinity for, learned about locational astrology and just finished soaking up the information on Orcus and Varuna in the Melanie Reinhart interview — which I found fascinating. I loved being introduced to the compositions of Paul Winter in that interview as well, the first composer to use live recordings of animals in his works. To listen to his work coupled with visuals from photography or video is enthralling, for this nature lover.

Thanks so much Eric and the PW team. Simply wonderful.”

— Shebear13

“Loving these (sloowwwwwwly). So dynamic. And crackling. So much info! Thanks!”

Friday, June 1, 2012. Weekly Horoscope #905 | Eric’s Zodiac Sign Descriptions

Gemini Birthdays: Before and After

There are some astrological events that define life as the marker between “everything before” and “everything after.” You are at such a moment now. Tuesday’s Venus transit of the Sun stands as a borderline in your life, and you can work with that consciously now. What happened before is the past, though this is substantially true based on what comes next. You are indeed embarking on a future different from anything you’ve experienced before, accessing parts of yourself that you could not quite make contact with before. You have help from a solar eclipse in your opposite sign Sagittarius, which is allowing you to release attachments to family, security and situations in your life that are rooted in the past. A second, similar event (the occultation of Pluto by the Moon) is helping you dismantle your old concepts of ‘commitment’ and ‘relationship’ and teaching you to be guided by your soul’s intention rather than what society has dictated as proper or appropriate. Once you give yourself space to be freed of your attachments and make the decisions you need to make, you will open a conduit of nearly boundless creative energy and passion, which you can direct any way you want. It would be eminently helpful if you decide exactly what that is — subject to modification of course, though the clearer the better.

Note about Gemini birthday reading: I’ve been unable to get to this due to my involvement with the UAC conference — though I have the project — an extended audio reading for your sign — scheduled for Monday. Please watch your email and the Daily Astrology & Adventure blog.

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — There’s an old expression, “Free your ass and your mind will follow.” Or is that “Free your mind and your ass will follow”? Well, after years of contemplation and experimenting, I think they amount to the same thing. There is nothing that liberates the mind like saying yes to your pleasure, letting go of your shame and inhibition and giving yourself space to be human. And taken from the other direction, a free mind is likely to observe that the next logical step is the freedom to take possession of your body and feel what you want to feel. It doesn’t matter which you start with, as long as the circuit is completed. Release from constraint is a holistic experience, and there is more than one way into the experience. I would pose one question, though: release from what? For some people it will feel more like fear, for others more like guilt, for others more like shame, for others more like anger. All of these are natural emotions with limited use — and the experience starts with the desire to go beyond them into something better.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — It is often said that the basis of love is selflove. Yet selflove is often confused with vanity, arrogance and self-obsession, and has a way of being put down as such. While many are busy doing this, the world is crumbling under the weight of the self-esteem problems that many people face, which come disguised in a thousand forms, most of which are not seen for what they are. Let’s come back to our starting point, which was selflove. This is not generally related to sex, which is presumed to come from other people — the sex we give ourselves isn’t usually regarded as ‘the real thing’. I would propose the idea that not only is masturbation real sex, it’s the basis of all sexual awareness and hence sexuality — and that it plays as meaningful a role in your relationship to yourself as sexual contact plays within any couple. Next week’s transit of Venus is pumping energy into your relationship with yourself — in its sexual aspect and many others. Explore this dynamic and you’ll discover that you can go deeper with yourself than you ever expected. Within your own inner space, you can work out anything that’s interfering with your relationships with others, and prepare yourself to go deeper than ever before.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — No doubt you’ve noticed that the pace of your life has picked up considerably since the eclipse in your birth sign that happened nearly two weeks ago. Events as they are developing will only concentrate the flow of experience, even to the point of putting you into a kind of time-warp. Tuesday’s Venus transit of the Sun happens in your sign, which is another way of saying it has personal meaning for you unlike for anyone else. It may even be occurring within a few days of your birthday, though in any event, what develops in these very days will influence your life for many years to come. There’s something here about recognizing yourself in your whole, undivided state, at one with yourself and your desires. There’s also an eclipse of the Moon in your opposite sign Sagittarius a day before the Venus event, which suggests that you have the ability to see past your attachments to others in a realistic way. This will allow you the freedom to take on the challenges of living in a way that is unencumbered by the past — or which, at least, keeps the past in perspective as something that has already happened. Many, many exciting and unusual things are to come — all of them supported by the cosmic gift of self-awareness.

Hello Gemini — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed). We will have the Gemini birthday reading for you as soon as possible! Please check this space, and look in your email from us.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — One of my Book of Blue model friends, an actor and artist named Heather Fae, and I made up a mantra during a photo session one day: Free Phantasy. We decreed that the realm of one’s erotic imagination is rightfully an anything-goes space. Anyone you want is subject to the whims of your imagination, as is anything you want, no matter how inappropriate or unavailable it may seem. Within the space of consciousness, we have an innate right to think and feel whatever we want. It helps if we dare to allow anyone to think or want anything they want about us. We don’t have to advertise this fact — only admit that it’s likely to happen and not waste energy resisting. When we allow the imagination to run wild, it’s inevitable that we’ll arrive places that violate various social morals or ethics. Most people spend enormous amounts of energy pulling back or censoring themselves, which in turn can lead to conflict and even paralysis and sickness. Anything goes means anything: darkness and shadow are part of our psychic experience on Earth, and can be sources of pleasure and authentic healing of a deep inner split that you no longer need — and that in truth no longer exists.

Hello Cancer — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Those born under the sign Leo (including rising and Moon) are almost all people who are admired and looked up to by others. You might still feel like lil’ ol’ you, yet there is indeed something about leadership and natural respect that you have as a gift of your birth. Do you fully appreciate how influential that is? One of the most significant crises on the planet right now involves leadership, particularly on the ‘unofficial’ or social level where you’re the most adept at it. The transit of Venus is bestowing you with the gift of charisma, though there is also something about communication skills and something even more — ethics. You have the ability to put into words what is right and what is not so right. And you have the ability to demonstrate something that the world needs to see: how to live in a way that eliminates jealousy and competition as a way of life. You can do this because you’re confident in yourself, but also because you know that if humanity keeps driving its train powered by these two nearly useless emotions, we’re going to come off the tracks.

Spring Checkpoint: Individual Signs Now Available

We will soon figure out that it’s actually 2012. The recent retrogrades of Mars and Mercury seemed to create a delay, but really this winter and early spring has been a phase of gestation. Over the next four weeks, the energy starts to pick up pace dramatically, and we will discover where we are and that something unusual, and beautiful, is happening.

Even as we approach the truly beautiful potential of the astrology that’s developing, many people are struggling with their day-to-day lives. There are more questions than answers; the economic and political situations seem hopeless; the pace of existence is going so fast that there seems to be nowhere to get in a little meaning, or seek some peace of mind.

Planet Waves

Here is where astrology can help. Astrology looks at the longer cycles, and the deeper themes — and can help you see your life in context of the present moment, no matter how chaotic it may be. Context means a sense of where you fit in that will help you see your potential and make better choices.

For years, I’ve been helping my clients prepare for making the most of the astrology of the 2012 era. Based on this experience, and many years of study, I’ve prepared a set of readings for all 12 signs (and rising signs, and Moon signs) that guides you through this astrology, step by step. I cover the most challenging and energized developments of this spring, which includes eclipses, Venus retrograde, the Venus transit of the Sun, and then a few days after the Sun ingresses Cancer, the Uranus-Pluto square.

Each sign gets a half-hour discussion. These came through loud and clear, with strength and meaning. I spent a week designing and recording them, and I am grateful to be able to offer them to you as a tool to help you guide your decisions, as you seek deeper meaning along your journey.

Spring 2012 is a kind of checkpoint along the way to wherever you are going. But really it’s a calling into the adventure of existence, a bold invitation to go beyond your past limits and explore something truly new about yourself.

Signs are now available individually for an amazingly low price, cheaper than the paper shopping bag costs at Jimmy Choo — order your reading here. The report is getting rave reviews from people who are currently working with it, including these words from a customer named Donna: “OMG — thank you thank you thank you — just spent this morning listening to my [Spring Report] info, and am so blown away by the accuracy (and relief!) in this experience. Thanks so very much for your part in supporting this work and for showing up in the way that you do!”. Here is the link to order.

Please drop us a note if you have any questions.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You never set out to conquer the world, though you’ve always been guided by a sense of purpose. That is now being elevated to a sense of mission, which means tangible goals that you go after with passion and the presence of something that approximates destiny. If you’re not feeling that now you will be feeling it soon. I have been describing one of the key elements of this for a while: noticing what your many other previous and current projects have as a common factor — seeing the spirit and essence behind what you do, no matter what it is. There is one other factor: letting go of your attachment to place. This is one of the strongest attachments that a person can have — their home; their familiar community; their local friends; and invoking the fear of being transient and ungrounded. Often this includes the presence of their family (sibs or parents). You will benefit from unleashing your wanderlust and your ability to have anyplace on Earth be home. Even if you don’t let go of your home base, you will build your confidence and security by traveling as far and wide as you can, particularly if you don’t stay in hotels but rather visit the homes of other people.

Hello Virgo — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — One (often unspoken) definition of ‘spiritual’ is asexual. This is particularly true in Christian culture, where Jesus, Joseph and Mary are all presumed to be virgins. Yet it extends into many other religious frameworks, where sex is the very thing that is suppressed in the name of holiness. Is there anyone who hasn’t noticed how weird this is? It is entirely backwards, a violation of natural cosmic law in support of imposed social organization. Yet you were created by sex, as was nearly all life on our planet. Religion then comes along, ascribes this all to God and charges fees for the privilege — then tries to inflict guilt if we appreciate nature for what it is. That, however, is what you seem to be doing. Your true nature is burning bright — the nature of your existence and of existence itself. You may feel like your beliefs (or those of your family) are being challenged, and if so, let the challenge begin. You don’t need beliefs because you have access to something direct. This may be shaking the structure of your mind, and if cracks form in the walls and ceiling, all the better for seeing the light shine through.

Hello Libra — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — One of the most interesting things about the way that Scorpio’s solar chart is arranged is that the sign Gemini falls on the 8th house. Let’s take those concepts one at a time. The 8th is about surrender in all its forms: death, orgasm, deep commitment, the movement of wealth between people and generations, and many kinds of situations over which we seem to have no power. It’s also the place where some of the best things in life come into our sphere of reality — and now you have a truly rare, magnificent event there. This signifies an inheritance that is not the result of death but rather the result of life itself. One expression is about feeling what a profound gift your relationships are. Yet another is actually experiencing in a direct way how meaningful you are to others. On one level you know this — and on another you waste too much time on your doubts and your insecurities. You don’t need them; they are not real, and you have a much more valuable emotional asset that is making itself known to you.

Hello Scorpio — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You may be feeling something unusual, for you — being daunted by the presence, the talent or the passion of someone else. You’re usually the one who nobody can touch, the one people look up to and who seems to have some kind of superhuman quality. Now you get to feel what it’s like to have someone like that in your life, someone you admire profoundly and who you know is having a deep influence on the course of your life. Now is the time to let your relationships — this one, and others — feed you. You’re not in a submissive posture in these situations; indeed it is your strength that is allowing you to have the ability to be stable and secure enough to actually receive what other people are offering. This really is the key — receiving. There is not a therapist alive who will deny that people struggle with this, though if you’re aware of it, you can end that struggle now. Life is holding out some of its richest offerings to you right now, and will be for the foreseeable future. Open up and allow yourself to embrace them fearlessly.

Hello Sagittarius — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Every time I hear the words ‘sexual healing’, I think — that’s a beautiful thing, but where would anyone go for that? We live in an era when even therapists and psychologists are terrified of having the sexual conversation with their clients, concerned that they might be sued for malpractice if something is taken the wrong way. Yet the pain that many people suffer is driven directly by their need for sexual healing, which connects to and influences the emotions on every level. If this describes you, I suggest you be open about this fact with yourself. If you can do that, you can take the next step and develop a description of your situation, so you know what your healing goals are. If you can state a problem coherently, the solution is usually right around the corner (borrowing from A Course in Miracles, “Let me recognize the problem so it can be solved.”) Remember that your sexual past goes back to the time of your conception (what I call the conception drama) and may go back even further. Be open to healing and trust that the right assistance will arrive — most of which, in truth, will come from you.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Sex is an experiment. It’s a gamble and it’s a form of play though mostly it’s an experiment, which is most dependably driven by a form of love known as curiosity. From the look of where the sky aligns with your solar chart, you have plenty of that going on right now, and that may be arriving with a deep desire to jump into new experiences. Here is a question, though: to what extent do you feel free to do that? What, if anything, is presenting an obstacle? You now have the power to go over, through or around it. One way to do that is to be clear about what you want, with yourself and anyone whom it may concern. It rarely is the presence or values of others that gets in our way — it’s how we choose to handle these things, which includes whether we’re going to be slaves to our inhibitions. There is a closely-related concept to sexual experimentation, and that is art. This may be the closest cousin to sex and it feeds many of the same aspects of our psyche and has an odd way of leading to hot encounters.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — There is big astrology moving — some of the most amazing of our lifetimes. This weekend’s series of events is focused on the angle of your chart that addresses the theme of your home. You’re awakening to the fact that this is the source of your strength, your stability and your success in both love and work. Therefore, any investment you make in improving your home life will offer you rich rewards. Start by appreciating what you have and where you are, for its human properties and its geographic ones. Then look for the places you want to make improvements. There’s a direct connection from your safe haven inward to your deepest sense of security and outward to every area of your life, particularly the work that you do. Make sure that any new living space is perfectly suited for you to be creative, productive and prosperous. You don’t need to stretch your finances much to do this — you merely need to plan and be aware of what you really want. It might be a lot of space. It might be sunlight. It might be quiet. It might be living in the busiest part of the city. A new vision of home is about to come to you: open your heart and let it in.

Transit of Venus: Embracing the Solar Feminine

Planet Waves
Photos of the 2004 Venus transit of the Sun by Anthony Ayiomamitis.

Dear Friend and Reader:

“As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.”
— Sulamitis, from the Song of Solomon

On June 5 (June 6 in some time zones) Venus and the Sun form a precise conjunction, called a transit of Venus. Venus and the Sun align about once a year — though this one is different due to the fact that Venus will not pass above or below the Sun but rather directly cross its path. This is called a transit of Venus. Considered one of the most rare predictable astronomical events, transits of Venus arrive in pairs separated by eight years; the pairs themselves are divided by more than a century.

Events in astrology gain influence by being unusual — though this one will also be spectacular. If you can see the Sun during the event and use a special viewing filter, you will be able to watch Venus cross the disk of the Sun. (Beginning at 6:04 pm EDT, viewers in New York can watch until sunset.) We most recently experienced a transit of Venus in 2004. The June 5 event may be related to something that you experienced or a phase of your life that began eight years ago.

Melissa by Eric Francis — Book of Blue, New York.

The world will not experience another transit of Venus until 2117, 105 years from now. It’s a bit ominous that, barring some life-extending genetic therapy, nobody who sees this one will be alive to see the next one.

Speaking of omens, this kind of rare event indicates a check-in point with the state of humanity. It’s the single most distinct astrology element of 2012, a year that may break the record for how much prophecy has hung on its back. Yet we do stand in a moment when one logical use of celestial divination would be trying to figure out what’s going to happen to civilization on our planet.

By any objective measure, we are in trouble. It’s not that our national and global problems don’t have solutions. It’s not that there are insufficient resources. The crisis involves lack of leadership and ethics. Anyone trying for a solution must outsmart what amounts to a cabal of heavily armed thieves who are holding the planet hostage.

We face numerous hotly polarized situations of ‘us and them’, many of which come from a prevailing condition of inner division that has a grip on the human psyche. Which brings me to why it’s so excellent that this event is happening in Gemini. I believe that the political mess we face is a reflection of the deeper elements of our consciousness. Many of these are based on what I will broadly term gender issues.

In recent years, the political machinery has been using gender and sexual orientation — and sex in general — as some of its most effective wedges. Yet with the atmosphere heating up, with fracking consuming the United States and headed to Europe, with the economy in an extremely fragile state and our genetic code under assault from supertoxins-for-profit, worrying about who has the right to marry seems like a distraction.

Trying to blast reproductive rights back to the 1950s (as evidenced by the movement to repeal not just Roe v. Wade, which preserves the right to abortion, and also Griswold v. Connecticut, which preserves the right to contraception) is often described as throwing red meat to the conservative base. It’s typically analyzed as a political ploy that skews the discussion away from real problems and also preserves the jobs of politicians.

We all know there’s a severe imbalance on the planet, and there are many spiritual theories going around as to why that might be. Instead of treating the sex and gender issue as a symptom, I would propose that it might be a lot closer to the cause. People in political leadership are not known for their powers of deep introspection or their sexual integrity. Often they are in conflict and project that conflict outward as attack, attempted control and manipulation of people’s private sexual lives. People not in positions of public trust drive one another insane with this stuff as well.

Planet Waves
Not a pinhole camera — gear used by Anthony Ayiomamitis to photograph the 2004 Venus transit of the Sun. Those images are shown at the top of the page. Many prior transit events were recorded only by illustration. Some examples of those drawings are below. Photo provided by Anthony.

This inner turmoil manifests many other ways, including lack of sensitivity for the Earth (the consequence of which is often accurately described as rape). Nearly all of the most potent toxins of industry attack the female reproductive system first, though we’re all soaking in an ocean of hormone-disruptive chemicals and all feeling the effects to some degree.

The transit of Venus presents us with a compelling metaphor and also a palpable moment of transition. It’s a junction (literally, a conjunction) where we can make a conscious choice. Think of this as starting within, where most (some would say all) of our conflict originates. Think of it as an inner reunion between the masculine and feminine elements of ourselves, appropriately happening in the sign of the interplay of opposites — Gemini.

Venus is a feminine symbol and the Sun a masculine one. When Venus intersects with the disk of the Sun, it’s a little like the Sun is being penetrated by potent feminine energy. Both will change in the process. My astrology colleague Adam Gainsburg (Soulsign.com) has been describing this as the emergence of what he calls the solar feminine.

“Despite the dominance of solar gods at the root of western civilization, the metaphor of light is actually more akin to the feminine principle than to the masculine. Light shines, radiates, illuminates. But from our viewpoint on Earth, the Sun also sets and takes the light with it each evening. This ebb and flow of light is precisely what the feminine is: the flow, the dance, the ever-changing pattern of light into dark and back again.”

With the transit of Venus, he said, “What becomes illuminated is how your feminine aspect self-radiates into the world — what you uniquely have to give to the improvement of our planet.” He adds, “The solar feminine is, literally, our ‘light body’. She’s the one inside each of us who leaves nothing uncovered, nothing unfelt. We experience the full range of our actual feelings as her body.” Yet the Sun is expressive, so this is about being moved to take creative action.

“The Solar feminine is a confrontational idea for many religions because her very existence fundamentally challenges the fragmentary, long-held assumption of masculine spiritual superiority. By re-acknowledging her, we begin to re-empower her. The solar feminine shines not just through the success and expression of women, but through the power of a man’s emotions received in his heart.”

I think what Adam may be describing is a process of men becoming more receptive and women becoming more expressive. That would help balance things out — and at least it gives us a clear idea of what to reach for. While there’s been plenty of ways in which our culture has slipped backwards in gender relations (especially when you factor in politicians), I believe there is a gradual balancing out of masculine and feminine energies within many individuals and in many relationships. With this eclipse-like event, we have an opportunity to deepen and accelerate that process.

The story of transits of Venus over the past few centuries gives us another metaphor to work with. Last year a book was published, called Transit of Venus: 1631 to the Present, by Nick Lomb (The Experiment, paperback, $24.95). Lomb describes the progression of how each successive event was seen by human eyes — and some of the implications. The following history is drawn from Lomb’s research.

No one is known to have seen the 1631 Venus transit — it was night in Europe. Johannes Kepler, who figured out the 1631 event, missed that there would be a second transit of Venus eight years later. Two people are known to have seen the 1639 transit: Jeremiah Horrocks and his friend William Crabtree, viewing separately from England. Amazingly, Horrocks figured out there would likely be a second Venus transit that century only about one month before it occurred. He began observing the day before his prediction indicated, just in case he had made an error in his calculations.

Edmond Halley (of Halley’s Comet fame) expected a Venus transit in 1761. He urged astronomers who would be alive at the time to observe the event. His calculations were off, but other astronomers worked out the correct timing. This was the first global scientific event, with 176 astronomers watching from 117 far-flung locations.

Eight years later, in 1769, there was another transit — the second of that pair. Up to 400 different calculations were presented to the Royal Society in London and similar elite European scholarly societies for the 1769 transit. The desirability of observing the transit in the South Pacific led to the founding of New South Wales, in what is now Australia; the British crown saw the need for calculations from the South Pacific as the perfect political cover story for its mission of seeking islands to expand to. In other words, modern Australia owes its existence to a celestial event. This adds the geopolitical expansion to the process.

More people observed the 1874 transit than any other previous one, reflecting the expansion of technology, science, education, industry, trade and population. It was also the first one documented in photographs.

Planet Waves
Drawings of the 1769 transit by Capt. James Cook and Charles Green.

The corresponding transit eight years later in 1882 was widely observed and better documented in photos. The U.S. sent out eight teams, including to South Africa and San Antonio, TX. They made 1,380 measurable photographic plates (four times as many as in 1874).

The 1882 transit was visible throughout the U.S. for almost the whole event. Amateur astronomers set up telescopes in parks and on sidewalks of New York City, collecting dimes from those who wished to look. In Meriden, Conn., a fire alarm bell was rung when it started, and people went to a local man’s house where he’d set up seven telescopes so people could look. Some 6,000 people observed the transit form that yard.

That takes us up to the 2004 transit, the most recent one. For the first time, we were able to observe the transit from space, with much vaster knowledge of Venus and the solar system. Not only could the general public observe, but hundreds of amateur astronomers could produce their own stunning photographs (three from the 2004 transit, taken by Anthony Ayiomamitis, appear at the top of this article).

For the 2012 event, many more people will be aware of what is happening, and due to that knowledge, and the availability of inexpensive viewing equipment and the proliferation of information on the Internet, this will be the most-viewed Venus transit of the Sun in history. Nearly everyone in the world will be able to see live video or photos minutes after it happens.

There is something in this rare event that’s about the exponential expansion of awareness. If (at least from an astrological viewpoint) we understand that awareness to involve the balancing of male and female energies, we can cooperate by spreading that energy in an exponential way.

There is one other beautiful message from this event that I picked up while researching the chart for the Venus transit. I cast the cart with 1,000 asteroids and newly discovered bodies, and noticed there is a minor planet precisely conjunct both Venus and the Sun when the transit happens. It won’t be visible — but it will be there. The planet, really an asteroid, is called Sulamitis. It’s a fast-mover (less than four-year orbit) so its presence is something to take note of.

I did a little research and discovered that Sulamitis is the female character in the Song of Solomon, a book from the Bible that stands out in that it’s not about laying down the law or describing the anguish of some tribe. Rather, it’s a passionate love poem presented as a dialog between a man and a woman.

The story has many twists and turns, but ultimately its theme is devotion and what it means to be in love, with a comment on how authentic balance between male and female energy feels. With this event happening in Gemini, the first place to seek and find that balance is inside ourselves. I could not think of a more beautiful visitor to stand guard over this rare event, at this vital opportunity for rebalancing our hearts, souls and our relationship to the Earth.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

Monthly Horoscope for June 2012 | Eric’s Zodiac Sign Descriptions

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Within the context of the rare, beautiful astrological events of this month, your job is to devote yourself to the quality of your work. You may feel a drive to innovation, leadership, invention or otherwise stirring the pot — though what your chart suggests is that you work calmly and steadily on specific, focused projects. Said another way, ground yourself in your goals, processes and methods. Focus on the details. You will have the occasion to work through certain blockages or obstacles, which may seem to be in your environment. I recognize that I’m not describing a glorious role, despite the fact that all eyes will be on the Sun, an object closely related to your sign. Your influence will come from your awareness and your ability to remain calm and go deep. That is the kind of leadership that you’re being called to. It’s the kind that involves intelligence, persistence, tenacity and foresight. There is a measure of self-direction that you’re being called to initiate, and you may be the one who gets to solve a problem that is too annoying or seemingly intractable for anyone else to work out. You’re doing this all the better if you feel invisible through the experience. The point is that this is not about you. You have a role, and by all indications it’s an integral one. Yet you can only accomplish this properly if you drop back and work with the full presence of your mind with no interference from your ego.

Hello Aries — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed). We will have the Gemini birthday reading for you as soon as possible! Please check this space, and look in your email from us.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Has there ever been a time when the human psyche was more fragmented? Have we ever been pulled in more directions, injected with competing self-images or struggled with conflicting values systems? These conflicts and struggles used to be called neurosis (a term now abandoned by modern psychology) — including confusion, compromised sense of self-worth, obsession, perfectionism, habitual fantasizing and many other seemingly small problems that eat human bandwidth. Meanwhile, many external factors are competing for your attention — be they advertising, social opportunities or the demands of work. You’re aware of this situation, both within you and around you. You may be waking up to the desire to bring your whole consciousness together and to focus your mind. Events this month offer a special opportunity for healing, which is likely to arrive as unusual clarity around what your priorities are, and an opportunity to focus on a clear agenda. Consider how much of your past struggle has involved deciding what you ‘should’ be doing versus what you really love, and how to balance this out. Your astrology suggests you may get a taste of what life is like without this tension. Yet if that feeling vanishes, you may not recognize it as the presence of something else. Indeed, you could overlook it just because you feel good. Therefore, pay attention. Feel the inner alignment that allows you to make the decisions based on what works for you. Once you open that space, you will be able to return dependably — as long as you remember that it exists.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — The whole is not only greater than the sum of the parts — it’s a lot more fun, and useful, and interesting. Yet there’s another level to this — what you actually do with all this potential. A car is greater than a garage full of parts, but then — where do you go? This month’s precise Sun-Venus conjunction in your sign is a clear demarcation point between the past and the future. Wherever you are going, it’s somewhere other than you’ve been, and I reckon, other than where you expected to go. This will require you to summon flexibility that’s unusual even for you, and to facilitate that you are about to release many old tendencies that have kept you stuck in certain patterns and at a certain depth within yourself. Or rather, your relationship to yourself. It’s true that you relate to yourself in a way that many people you know do not — consciously, aware of your ‘inner other’. Over the next few weeks, it looks as if you discover that your inner other is actually your soulmate. You don’t need anyone else to play this role for you; your friends, lovers and companions have different roles to play. Your experience of them, and of anything seemingly outside yourself, is rooted in your experience with yourself — and your relationship to yourself. If the planets in their courses say anything about you right now, it’s that you are recognizing that your relationship to yourself is something to honor and treasure every day.

Hello Gemini — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — This month’s transit of Venus is about healing seeming divisions and splits within the psyche. For you, there is a special theme — resolving something you’ve been unable to observe closely or give a name to, perhaps until recently. You’ve lived with the effects all of your life, which may have manifested in what I call the ‘hemisphere effect’ — the potential to experience yourself, or anything, two entirely different ways. They may have nothing in common and one point of view may be entirely exclusive of the other. I would consider this as a potential source of misgivings about yourself, as well as an ambivalence that has followed you through some of your most important relationships. Consider that at some of the most challenging points in your life, you’ve been experiencing the effects of something inside you projected outward. It’s difficult to see the actual process because you’ve only been seeing the outer manifestation — like studying the projection on a screen rather than considering the film or the projector. The coming weeks contain a moment of profound alchemy, wherein the mirage of an inner split resolves itself seemingly spontaneously — and then you notice a corresponding change in your relationships. You will not be able to predict what happens; challenges or unresolved situations you’re currently involved with may work themselves out any number of ways. From the strength and integrity of the current astrology, you can trust that what develops will serve your growth and your longterm happiness beautifully.

Hello Cancer — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — I suggest you take a bold step beyond considering your image or your appearance and fully immerse yourself into your relationship with the world. By that, I mean the world as you think of it: the constellation of everyone and everything in your life. You may be familiar with the Lakota prayer Mitakuye Oyasin, which translates loosely to “all are related.” It is an expression of the idea that all people and all things are interconnected. They may be related by being part of our sphere of consciousness, or looking a bit deeper, by the truth that we are part of something larger than ourselves. This of course violates Western concepts of separateness, division and privacy, ideas that lead to quite a bit of chaos and conflict — which are all based on a violation of natural law. The extraordinary astrology that is now unfolding is a reminder that you are part of holistic existence. Everything you do, and everything you think, influences the totality of your environment. This isn’t a theory but rather a property of existence that may boldly reveal itself to you during the next few weeks. Such an experience would shift how you experience yourself in the midst of your reality. Imagine if you could live that interconnectedness all the time. What would change? What would come into your life? What conflict would disappear into the deeper truth that you are related to everything from earth to sky to all members of the human family? Imagine.

Eric Francis

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — During your long search for a purpose, a mission, a calling, have you noticed how many others are on a similar quest? This search for meaning and purpose influences far more people than those who seem to have not accomplished much. Many brilliantly successful people are seeking contact with this feeling, having not found it in the midst of all of their achievement. You seem to face another kind of issue. It’s sometimes framed itself as the question, which of your two greatest talents is the one to pursue as your true path? What about how they seem to compete with one another, for time, attention and resources? Here is the message from your astrology: First, your purpose goes beyond any specific activity, job or role. Each face of what you do is an expression of something deeper, and this is one moment in your life when you make contact with that inherent quality. When you feel this, you’ll know because the sensation will shift your perspective. Second, your diversity of skills, and your choice to develop multiple gifts, has only strengthened you, widened your vision and given you the opportunity to cross-reference from several fields of knowledge. Finally, I suggest you cultivate a special reverence for language, and the language skills you possess. They will always serve you, the more so for investing in them and using them regularly. This is called being an integrated human being. You have always been well on the way — you’re about to go to a whole new level.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Balancing fear with love does not work. It only turns love into a defense, which reinforces fear. It may work to bring some light into the darkness, though for true healing to happen, all that is dark, existing beneath the surface or cloaked by denial must be brought to the light. If you work with these basic principles, you will be able not only to solve any problem, you will unfold a new vision for your life. The Venus transit of the Sun involves the planet associated with your sign and this takes place in one of the most visionary houses — the 9th. This rare event culminates with an opening for you to let go of an outdated vision of yourself. You would be amazed how such things can block new energy and ideas from entering your life. You will soon reach the point where the past is, in fact and in your experience, over. Many ideas you’ve had about the future up until this point will melt away. What is approaching is more exciting and beautiful than nearly anything you’ve conceived of before. You may need to go back over the things you were thinking in childhood to find certain sticking points, romantic ideals, and most of all, concepts about God that were inflicted on you. Consider these things carefully, and without sentimental attachment. Be willing to let go of everything you were told, or that you believed, was wrong, and in doing so open up space for the truth about yourself.

Hello Libra — Eric has written a new description for your sign that you have access to from this link (no password needed).

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Every story in your life right now seems to be about commitment. And, despite being associated with attachment and bonding, one of the places you seem to hold the most self-doubt involves commitment to others. That is where to draw the line: it’s easy for you to confuse your investment in a relationship with an investment in your own life. Yes, there is a fine line, though the people who care about you the most understand that they provide a forum for you to self-actualize. Look carefully at the relationships in your life and make sure that you know which ones fit this description; that you understand who exists in your world for the purpose of consciously (as in willingly) holding space for you to get to know yourself. I recognize that this may seem ‘one sided’, though I would offer the idea that when your deepest relationships have this as their primary element, you are more available to others, not less. So, far from being self-centered for its own sake, I am talking about being self-aware and fully involved with your own growth, so that you are able to participate with greater depth and involvement in your relationships. You only run into trouble when you make some kind of significant compromise of your personal truth, which means you can only be half-present — and that’s as useful as not being present at all. Forget the fact that some people insist that’s what you do. There are others who want you uncompromised and at full strength.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — It’s not a relationship that’s changing — it’s your whole orientation on relationships. You’re enough of a philosopher to know what I mean when I say that everything is a relationship. In truth, what is coming to life is a new contact point with existence. You might glimpse something that hints to you that something is possible — remember that you’re seeing what’s possible all the time. Experiences you never dreamed could happen are right within your reach. All you have to do is take that step and go toward people you like rather than having them come to you. This is a significant shift in orientation for you, though it’s long overdue. Your independence will not be compromised; part of your reorientation is understanding how to share space with others in a way that leaves space for you. In doing this, you’re on the leading edge of a revolution that many people are eagerly awaiting, and you get to be there mainly because of your courage. As this unfolds, notice who you are attracted to and who is attracted to you. Be sensitive to the energy you share. For sure, your existing relationships are going through a transformation of some kind, and you may get the feeling that this is outside of your control. That’s true, to a point. You have the option to notice what is actually working and what is not. You have the option to suspend any efforts to fix things — and then size up what is so, and respond appropriately.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Pay attention to the speed and grace with which thoughts progress into concept and then into full manifestation. Though there are many steps to the process, the most significant is the one where you change and embrace the new pattern of your life. That feels like yielding to a force more powerful than yourself, though it usually has a pleasant sensation of release and embrace rather than the sensation of being pushed. In truth that force is within you, and it’s been building for a long time. You know that you’ve consciously initiated many deep changes the past few years of your life, and you’ve been wondering when some of them are finally going to bear fruit in the form of actual progress. That time has arrived. One of the key lessons in all of this is that of confidence. The world is a profoundly different place for those who proceed with confidence, which means with faith in themselves, and those who are ruled by their insecurities. You have no time to waste on such folly, and you’ve experienced many moments recently when you know you’ve found your true center. Yet you’re also being challenged to be certain of who you are in a time when that has never seemed to change faster. Consider yourself a being in motion, a work in progress, and define your sense of ‘self’ based on that sense of movement and development. Invest your trust there and you will have handsome rewards.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — What is the difference between a creative person and an ‘uncreative’ one? There definitely seems to be a distinction — and by early adulthood most of us have typecast ourselves as one or the other. It may not be possible to teach creativity, but what interferes with the process can be identified and moved out of the way. What would that be? I can name two things offhand: rigid patterns and fear. Those things that move creative energy can be encouraged, such as curiosity and the spirit that the whole world, and everyone in it, is there to feed your process. I would say the distinction that a ‘creative’ person has is guts — they are willing to dare. That alone does not bestow talent, but it sure can help you get there. By daring I don’t mean the bungee-jumping or gamble-a-lot-of-money kind of daring; I mean the willingness of a child to experiment with what turns you on, coupled with the adult commitment to follow through once you get the energy going. For you, the risk factor includes exploring the very ideas you think are the most dangerous, taboo or unacceptable. It means daring to speak the message that you know is true but that you’re afraid others will find to be somehow offensive. This is the spot where nearly all good ideas either fizzle out before they go anywhere, or the spot where they go past and emerge into consciousness as something fun and maybe beautiful.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — I am sure you’ve read lots of those annoying little statements in self-help books and ‘sacred’ texts that inform you that when you change yourself from within, the world around you responds. That’s exactly what’s happening to you right now. Your psychic, psychological and emotional innards (all part of the same spectrum) are coming into alignment. It’s as if you’re settling into yourself, and as you do, the world is becoming a different place. If you’re feeling any inner divisions, that will soon yield to the palpable sensation of those fissures closing and healing. Much of what has troubled you in the past goes back a long way; in a sense it was built into your childhood, and it has roots into your genetic lineage. That’s one reason why it’s been so persistent. Another reason is because it’s often difficult to accurately perceive our relationship to our environment — and we’re taught that manipulating the outer world works better than working to nourish and strengthen ourselves in the spirit of healing. What happens over the next few weeks will help you finish the repairs to your foundation that you have likely already begun. What seemed like irreversible damage from the past will reveal itself as being subject to healing and growth. You are not the only one who will benefit; the repairs will extend back through the generations. Observe the changes in your perspective as you experience being united with yourself and your environment. There is a word for this — integrity.
