Cardinal Grand Cross: To the Edge and Beyond

Dear Friend and Reader:

Beginning Tuesday and into Wednesday, Mars in Libra retrogrades into a square to Jupiter, an opposition to Uranus and a square to Pluto. This is the perfection of the cardinal grand cross, four planets in an exact X with the Earth in the middle.

As the cardinal grand cross takes shape, Russia and Ukraine are on the brink of war. Developments Thursday may signify that Russia is willing to de-escalate, but we have a lot of astrology about to happen. Video still from The Guardian shows a protest from December, when the grand cross — a highly stressful aspect — was within a few degrees.

That, in turn, is one of the big moments in the Uranus-Pluto square — our era-defining aspect, the one that spans from 2012 through 2015 with several years tacked onto either side. Fast-moving, personality-driven planets like Mars getting mixed up with slow movers such as Uranus and Pluto can bring otherwise hidden events associated with the main aspect out to the front of awareness.

Additionally, the grand cross aligns exactly with the United States Sun, which is at 13+ Cancer. In some way the karma of the United States is involved in this event. The U.S. Sun is in its 8th house, so there is some material around commitments, shared resources and sex that is involved. Thankfully it’s Jupiter that’s conjunct the U.S. Sun rather than Mars, Uranus or Pluto, though one effect of Jupiter is to magnify things.

We are in a big moment, even counted on a scale of decades. The two most potent aspects I remember before this were the Saturn-Pluto opposition of 2001, and the fixed grand cross and total solar eclipse of 1999.

Speaking of eclipses, next week’s astrology is amplified by the fact of a solar eclipse. That happens Tuesday, April 29. So the grand cross and whatever it signifies is vibrating between the lunar eclipse of earlier in the week and the solar eclipse at the New Moon a week from Tuesday. The New Moon event suggests that this time between the eclipses is a seed moment, not just for setting intentions but also for focusing your mind on accomplishing them.

Said yet another way: the planets are aligning in a get-serious pattern. The combination of squares, oppositions, a generational event and a series of eclipses is describing the urgency of our moment and also how much influence we can have if we want it.

The discovery of Chiron was the first time that a natal chart for a planet was taken seriously by astrologers. This chart has many amazing features, including the Galactic Core rising to the degree (left side of chart, 26+ Sagittarius). Chiron is positioned near the edge of the 5th house; it’s the orange key with the number 3 next to it. That position is 3 Taurus and 9 arc minutes. Now check the Sun in the next chart.

Getting serious, however, is usually the thing we like to do the very least, here in our la-la land of adventure films, foamy sugar, iPods and iPhones and where even ‘progressive’ programs consist of one-third television commercials that verge on psychotic fantasies. Americans live in a country where adults are fed dietary fiber in gumdrops and 4.5 million guns are purchased every year.

In the United States there are 90 guns for every 100 people and no obvious connection between that and the more than 11,400 Americans killed by people using guns including homicide, suicide and accidental death in the first year after Newtown that were reported by the media. The actual number of people killed by guns was 33,173.

I’ve said a few times that one of the most serious problems of Western civilization is our seeming inability to connect cause and effect. Cause and effect is the Law of Karma, and the failure to make the connection can breed karma rapidly. And that is exactly — exactly, precisely — what our society does. We breed karma faster than it’s possible to get out of it, by any normal means not requiring a profound spiritual connection or help from friendly extraterrestrials good at cleaning up nuclear waste.

Meanwhile, many people want to wake up, and try to do so diligently. Yet the first thing anyone on a path of awakening is likely to discover is just how twisted their society is, and how driven by dark motives. That fact is not exactly encouragement for becoming conscious. Anyone with a shred of intelligence knows that to approach any aspect of the global crisis, more is demanded than their personal purity; we have to do more than what we deem to be ‘our part’.

Solving problems, whether personal or on a scale larger than one’s own immediate situation, involves becoming aware of the nature of the issue. This alone seems to be an obstacle — many global problems are extremely complex, or they seem that way. Meanwhile, one’s personal circumstances can be more than enough to bear. For anyone sensitive who feels the pull toward considering what we must solve to protect future generations, the pressure can be overwhelming.

Even trying to approach or resolve a relatively simple problem within a community can lead to total frustration. This is often connected to the personalities who are invested in the dysfunction, the underlying politics or encountering those who are committed to things staying the way they are — often for reasons that are entirely opaque.

On a larger scale, a 10-minute discussion of an actual global problem or the motives driving it can be enough to have someone sobbing. For many, denial seems to be an essential survival tool. But denial doesn’t do anything and its effectiveness as a hedge wears off quickly.

Considering the pressure of this astrology, the world seems to be in a fairly ordinary state. Sometimes precision of aspects can lend itself to solutions. I believe they can be used that way; if we are going to get astrology working in our service, it’s necessary to use it as a map to connecting with collective energy and understanding trends that might otherwise defy understanding.

The astrology we’re experiencing looks like it could push anyone to the edge. That might be a psychological or emotional edge; a limit on tolerance of a situation. This could also represent a trip to the edge
of one’s intelligence — that is often productive, because the edge is where you can go beyond what you knew or thought of before. It’s the place to take the leap.

Yet everything about the current astrology says this must be done with precision.

The Sun in the Chiron Discovery Degree

Speaking of precision, there is an unusual feature of the April 23 grand cross, which has not eluded the perception of Chiron-spotters in the audience. Chiron is a small planet orbiting our Sun that was discovered in 1977. My impression after watching the world go by is that Chiron has been the most influential planet in shaping the ethos of modern professional astrology.

At the moment of the alignment, the Sun is in the degree where Chiron was discovered. In fact, Mars square Pluto happens in a near-perfect synchronicity with the Sun conjunct the degree and minute where Chiron was discovered — 3 Taurus and 9 minutes of arc.

This is one of those connections that’s so strange and interesting and vibrating with meaning that I keep looking at it wondering how it’s even possible. We could translate this into, “Whatever the grand cross is about, it has something to do with the discovery of Chiron.”

Chiron is the planet that represents holistic consciousness. One of the first modern holistic healers, D. D. Palmer, discovered ‘chiropractic’ and did the first adjustment in 1895, the year that the first photograph was (unwittingly) taken of Chiron. Called a pre-discovery photo, it sat in the files till astronomers dug it out in 1977 to confirm the orbit of the new object; its discoverer, Charles Kowal, named it Chiron after the famous healer of Greek mythology. Most astronomers don’t believe in astrology but those who discover and name planets are often very good at it. Kowal gave Chirion its first keyword, maverick — one who stands away from the crowd.

Chiron, the first centaur, was a half-man, half-horse, and was abandoned as a child and raised by the god Apollo, who taught him medicine and surgery. Chiron then passed his skills to Asclepius, who became the god of medicine. Chiron is a healer but also a teacher of those on the stature of a god; he was also mentor to a generation of Greek heroes, including Heracles, Jason and Achilles.

So with Chiron, we get the theme of holistic consciousness, healing and also the vital theme of mentorship. There are many ways to learn things: books, classes, seminars and YouTube videos among them. But for serious, grounded and careful learning, there may be no better way than mentorship.

Chiron itself is prominent in the grand cross chart, part of a grouping of objects in Pisces that includes Neptune, Venus and two other useful minor planets, Nessus (another centaur) and Borasisi (similar to Pluto but a bit further from the Sun). None of these are asteroids; later in Pisces there is a rather phenomenal grouping of those.

Yet Chiron’s discovery degree, 3+ Taurus, can function in many ways like Chiron itself. It is a reminder that relates directly to the moment of discovery, and the era of discovery, when the new planet manifested.

The 1970s were an exciting time, a dawning of the era of hands-on healing, the early acceptance of naturopathic medicine, awareness of the mind-body connection and when actual therapy as opposed to meds was something that had respect.

Notably, chiropractors were entering the struggle for their existence, and did battle with the official medical establishment, which was trying to destroy their profession.

In 1976, a year before Chiron’s discovery, a chiropractor named Dr. Chester Wilk brought a federal antitrust lawsuit against the American Medical Association (AMA) and numerous other allopathic medical organizations. The federal court ruled that doctors had waged a “lengthy, systematic, successful and unlawful boycott” designed to restrict cooperation between chiropractors and MDs, all in an effort to eliminate the chiropractic profession as a competitor in the United States healthcare system.

More interesting, though they had repeatedly attacked chiropractic medicine through something called the “Committee on Quackery,” testimony at the trial demonstrated that medical doctors leading the attack did not even know what chiropractic was or how it worked. After 14 years, Wilk and his attorney Mick Andrews won a substantial settlement that included direct admission of wrongdoing by the AMA and other organizations.

Who could persist this long against such injustice? Someone with Chiron on the midheaven, as Wilk has. The 10th is the house of professional achievement and reputation, as well as one’s relationship to the established power structure. Chiron in that position describes a person who is fearless, and who will go up against the whole system if necessary.

Today we take for granted that chiropractic, massage therapy, acupuncture, homeopathy and naturopathy are legal, legitimate and available in nearly any city and many smaller towns. It is true that the AMA and the drug companies attempt to crush anything that might compete with them, but it’s worth noticing that they have not succeeded.

It was not long ago that the word ‘massage’ meant going to a prostitute, and that people bandied around the term ‘psychosomatic illness’ as an insult, translating loosely to ‘it’s all in your head’.

The time of Chiron’s discovery was a time of the roots of the holistic movement reaching deep into the culture. We might lament that the medical establishment and GMO foods and big pharma have way too much power — but imagine a world with no alternatives, with no options.

Let’s consider the relationship of the Sun conjunct the discovery degree. The Sun is the astrological equivalent of the healthy ego. You can describe it as the place people want to shine in life, and seek success and glory. It’s one of the most powerful identity factors in astrology — often, the seat of the idea ‘I am’.

But the Sun can be a baby, seeking attention and wanting something for nothing. Other factors in the chart will describe how the person is willing to work or not work for their success (and potentially, glory); the person’s ability to actually be an adult.

In this chart, the Sun is making contact with the emergence of Chiron as an idea and as a reality. It’s as if the Sun has found its mentor, or connected to a source of higher knowledge.

The Chiron discovery degree shows up interesting places. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who died this week, has the discovery degree rising (see the 3 Taurus 47 on the lower left of the diagram). This comes up when his chart is cast according to his officially recorded birth time (the degree rising advances every four minutes).

To me this placement is symbolic of the kind of growing up that we will need to embark upon in order to participate in solving the global crisis. The first step in that is individuals paying attention to their own personal healing, working with role models and becoming functioning adults. We have seen, in the past, many problems with immature people ending up in positions of power — we see the kinds of power games for which the world is so famous.

Grounded, healthy leadership requires individuals who are aware of themselves and of their relationship to their environment. It also requires people who have an actual spiritual connection, that is, whose perception does not end on the physical plane but who have the capacity to think and be sensitive on several layers of consciousness.

Yet this goes beyond the concept of ‘self help’ or being a better person. It goes entirely beyond the notion of what is self-serving, and beyond the idea of doing one’s bit. Inherent in Chiron is the drive for service, a passion and devotion to humanity that you really can’t fake.

There is one other thing. Chiron represents processing some of the darkest emotions and experiences that humans are capable of. Everyone has a little piece of this, and some people have quite a lot. On one level I’m talking about normal emotions but which can, if ignored, get blown out of proportion or acted out in extremely toxic ways. The denial of shadow material — emotions associated with fear, shame, guilt, abandonment and aggression — has led to more war and mayhem than perhaps any other factor, including greed (which is fed by all of the above). The holistic process described by Chiron demands honest awareness of these aspects of consciousness, if only so they can be brought to the light of healing.

Without the Sun in the Chiron discovery degree, this would be a frightening chart, indicative of all kinds of mayhem and violence with no way out. With a bold reminder of Chiron and what it represents, the scenario makes a lot more sense. We have a chart that reveals the problem, and it reveals the way to many potential solutions.

Sun Enters Taurus, Meets 1992 QB1

When the Sun enters Taurus on Saturday at 11:55 pm EDT, it immediately makes a conjunction to a minor planet called 1992 QB1, which (after 22 years in Aries) is now in the first degree of Taurus. Well, a minor planet but not so minor. QB1 was the first object ever discovered orbiting our Sun beyond Pluto. As such, it counts as the discovery of the Kuiper Belt. [See related article here.]

I associate QB1 with the art of thresholding — the conscious process of helping others get across mental and emotional barriers, including those associated with sex, emotional contact, self-awareness, death and dying, the birthing process and inaugurating new eras of their lives. In Taurus, we have an image of dissolving old patterns and personal customs as well as rigid and limiting self-concepts; there is an image of changing what seems impossible to change.

For more than 60 years, Pluto, a planet named for the Roman lord of death and the underworld, held the position of official furthest planet from the Sun. The furthest planet out sets a conceptual boundary, a kind of limit on what is considered possible. It seems to work as a container for existence that most people are not able to get beyond. [I explore this concept in an article called The Foggy New Edge of Neptune, written at the time that Eris was named.]

The discovery of QB1 initiated a time when we could, at least in theory, get beyond the “death works” school of thought — that is, a psychological hangup wherein the threat of death or industrial-scale murder were the most impressive things going. As Dr. Wilhelm Reich pointed out, psychiatry and psychology became obsessed with death around this time, leaving behind their prior theory that sexuality was the core of human consciousness. Why did they do that? According to Reich, they were afraid that the Nazis would kill them. I believe this closed off a vast area of human potential.

The six decades after Pluto’s discovery arrived with World War II, the bomb being dropped on Japan, the nuclear arms race, the Korean War, the Southeast Asian wars in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, genocide in East Timor, wars throughout Central America, a 10-year war between Iran and Iraq with both sides sponsored by the United States, then an outright massacre in Iraq initiated by the United States. In other words, it was one continuous, perpetual war from shortly after Pluto’s discovery in 1930 until the discovery of QB1 in 1992.

Dr. Wilhelm Reich, a psychiatrist, was not afraid to challenge the prevailing view that death was a more important force in the psyche than sex.

During these same six decades, the chemical industry contaminated the entire planet with DDT, PCBs and dioxins, all of them hormonal toxins. The real problem is that all of this became so pervasive it seemed normal. Attempting to adapt to life in this kind of society, many people have the motto, “Well, something’s gotta kill you.”

Astrology desperately needed a concept beyond Pluto, so it could describe something beyond all of this agony. The problem is that astrologers didn’t notice that one had been discovered. Yet after QB1 was noted and recorded by science, there followed a flood of other discoveries in what became known as the Kuiper Belt, some of which have been noticed by a few astrologers. Yet QB1 may be the least-often used scientifically significant planet in astrology, even by minor planet specialists.

That may be because the discoverers have chosen not to give it a name. Therefore it lacks an ego identity and mythological baggage. One thing it does not lack is meaning. The Sun’s ingress into Taurus and conjunction to this point all weekend may be a time when the themes of QB1 will come to the surface — if you’re curious, pay attention.

Events Surrounding the Grand Cross

Mars retrograde in Libra makes first contact with the grand cross on Tuesday, making a square to Jupiter at 3:27 pm EDT. Mars opposes Uranus Wednesday at 3:08 am EDT.

Mercury ingresses Taurus at 5:16 am EDT Wednesday, making a conjunction to 1992 QB1 shortly after. Mars then squares Pluto at 9:38 am EDT, which I consider to be the peak of energy. I would note that any one of these aspects would be significant — Mars square Jupiter (in mundane astrology, the potential for believing what is not true, exaggeration, false wisdom), Mars opposite Uranus (aggression, accidents, conflicts, potential breakthroughs, potential violence), and Mars square Pluto (inner conflict, inner movement, coming up against an inner limit; this is a potentially violent aspect as well).

Together, however, they represent one thought, one idea that I suggest be considered and taken as a whole, even if you don’t have words for it.

Detail of minor planets at the time of Mars square Pluto (or very close to it). Note that the only other planet exactly on the cross is Okyrhoe, a centaur planet with the shortest orbit of all the planets in its class. Discovered in 1998, it orbits our Sun in just over 24 years.

There’s one centaur planet on the grand cross, called Okyrhoe, named for the child of Chiron and Chariklo. Okyrhoe is in an exact conjunction to Pluto at 13+ Capricorn. Mars makes a square to Okyrhoe Thursday, April 14 at 1:22 am EDT. It is interesting that (using my set of about 120 points) there are no other minor planets besides this one exactly on the cross — no asteroids, no Kuiper objects, no other centaurs — just four planets and Okyrhoe, who in mythology was known for her gift of prophesy. Given the retrograde status of Mars, this is one reason why I’ve been cautious of (and cautioning against) making predictions associated with this whole grand cross scenario.

Once it retrogrades past the exact degrees of the grand cross, the next thing Mars does is make an exact conjunction to Hybris. This is the root of the word hubris. Martha Lang-Wescott delineates Hybris: “Expectation, glass-ceilings, limits — what one future-paces as their fate, their slot in life.” That is, in astrology, it can translate into one’s conditioned limitations.

Mars retrograde in Libra conjunct Hybris could take this whole discussion right into the realm of intimate relationships and our concepts of limitations that are associated with them (such as, “I cannot do this because I’m in a relationship” or “I cannot talk to you because I’m in a relationship,” etc.).

With Mars conjunct Hybris, I would add that there’s the obvious caution about good old-fashioned hubris as Shakespeare applied the concept (the tragic flaw, which is a form of unbridled ambition) and a more strict definition of the concept.

In other words, though the planets may be full of astrological testosterone, I suggest that the best approach is to be cool. Not pretend — actually be cool.

I never thought you would ask!

Life at a Snail’s Pace

Is the speed of life these days getting you down? Is the time-warp feeling of these weeks between eclipses, combined with all the energy ramping up for the cardinal grand cross, feeling a little overwhelming?

Luckily the Sun ingresses Taurus Saturday, taking on that sign’s more languid approach to time and a renewed contact with the earth to balance all the fire and air in the sky. But when it comes to slowing down, even bulls got nothing on snails — a favorite subject of Ukrainian photographer Vyacheslav Mishchenko.

Mishchenko specializes in macro photography; that is, taking pictures with the camera very close to the subject, which is often very small. Some of his images are obviously staged (snails floating on cherries?) but that doesn’t diminish their otherworldliness, whimsy and beauty, or his clear appreciation for nature’s critters. Including those moving at a Taurean pace.

Into the 8th Houses of the United States

Dear Friend and Reader:

Sunday night I was out in New Paltz, our little San Francisco here in Ulster County, interviewing a couple who wants to model for my photo studio. It was a beautiful, warm summer evening. We were outside Mexicali Blue, a gourmet taco place not to miss if you’re ever in town. Our conversation was veering from art into social issues, such as the nature of education, environmental toxins and the whole debt ceiling crisis that was at that point still in flux.

Comets are not generally used in Western astrology, but they do make interesting synchronicities. Into our discussion drops a buff 19-year-old guy who was in town for rock climbing, the thing for which New Paltz is perhaps most famous as a global destination. He was visiting from Long Island, where he lives and attends community college in a wealthy part of New York State.

He told us that he used to have a lot to say about politics but got fed up because so few people care. I started asking questions and in a little while I figured out that he’s a conservative who refuses to use the word, who is against high corporate taxes, the welfare state or ‘socialism’ in any form. If someone messes up, it’s their fault. If they succeed, good for them. They owe nothing to anyone else, and in his opinion, what he’s calling socialism amounts to taking what is rightfully his and giving it to someone else who doesn’t deserve it — such as a drug addict. Because taking drugs is a personal choice, society owes you nothing if you get into this condition.

I was not in the mood to yes him along, and I was fascinated by what he kept coming out with — so I challenged him on every point. To his claim that corporate taxes are too high, I explained how many of the biggest companies pay no corporate income taxes at all. To his claim that society should not take care of drug addicts, I explained that prison costs the state a lot ($22,000 a year per prisoner) and we’re also going to be paying other ways if we don’t help them, such as ER visits, and the various costs of crimes related to the drug trade. (Let’s not forget that the U.S. war in Afghanistan was God’s gift to heroin trafficking.)

When the conversation came to companies that produce chemicals that cause birth defects, victims of which are supported for life by SSI, he accused me of being a conspiracy theorist. In his world, birth defects don’t exist and if they do, they are certainly not caused by chemical or nuclear companies.

Conspiracy theory? Part of Exhibit 422: Monsanto’s 1969 “Pollution Abatement Plan,” revealing what the company knew about its deadly chemicals even as it promised the world they were safe. It reads, “The problem involves the entire United States, Canada, and sections of Europe especially the United Kingdom and Sweden. As the investigation broadens other areas of Europe, Asia and Latin America will surely become involved. Evidence of contamination have been found in some of the very remote parts of the world. The involvement could and most likely will follow the DDT [pesticide] investigations.”

The conversation went on like this for a while, until he was demanding that I either 1) give away everything I have and live modestly so that, being the bleeding heart liberal he perceived me to be, I was not a hypocrite, or 2) give him money right now. (I told him that I would hire him, if he wanted, to write an article about his views. He declined and kept aggressively demanding free money.) I was impressed by how rigid his mind was, and how bold he was about his views, given that he didn’t have any valid facts.

Now, you might think this was a conversation with a random jerk. You might think, well, he’s 19 and has never had a solid job and is sheltered from living in his privileged community and family, and maybe he was exposed to too many lawn chemicals as a child. You might think this is the 2010s equivalent of meeting an anarchist in Washington Square Park in the 1960s, our modern stand-in for the long-haired guy who wants society to feed everyone for free and believes we’re all equal and that the system should be brought down: a conservative version of Meathead from All In The Family.

Perhaps, but his viewpoint is not random. I was especially intrigued because the conversation ran parallel to an email discussion with another friend that had been unfolding over the prior few days — with someone who considers himself a ‘right of center conservative’. One match-up point that made my bells ring was the thing about denying that companies such as Dow or Monsanto make chemicals that cause birth defects. My email friend informed me that birth defects have been around forever, essentially denying that they are caused by industry in enormous numbers. (Dow Chemical, which made much of the Agent Orange that was dumped on U.S. troops and the people of Vietnam, tries to claim the same thing.)

You could call this living in an alternate reality.

What impressed me the very most about the young guy I met in New Paltz was how angry he was — especially in context: that context being he had come upstate to play in a world-class climbing area, he was young, healthy and strong, he didn’t have to be at work the next day, he was getting an education heavily subsidized by the state and it was a beautiful summer night.

And he was pissed off. I would even say outraged. His rage was directed at people who had less than he did. So too was the anger of my older conservative email friend: he is very, very angry at the people who don’t have jobs and who live off the system. My older friend has worked for the government his whole life. He does not see the irony of his position. I understand he’s working rather than ‘collecting’, however from the viewpoint of a self-employed person (for example), government workers have relatively little to worry about.

I also recognized this viewpoint from a conversation with my dad, which we had during the 2008 election. Dad was outraged that Obama’s proposed healthcare reform plans would (in his mind) bankrupt the nation. My father has both federal Medicare coverage and the very best private health insurance through his government job. He did not pay a dime for his heart valve replacement at St. Francis Hospital a few years ago, one of the best cardiac centers in the NY area — the taxpayers covered all of it. He got paid by the state to be in the hospital and recover (sick leave). But he was angry that anyone else (such as myself) might have access to affordable health insurance.

Lately I’ve been trying to describe this anger that I see as inherent in conservatism, mingled with the lack of concern for others and the lack of recognition that we’re all in this life together. Then a friend wrote to me and said, there’s a word for this thing you’re seeing: resentment. Here is the weird thing. Resentment is usually directed at those who have more. Now it’s being directed at those who have less, almost as a national pastime. And, the worse the economy is, the more there will be who have less. The more that wealthy companies pile up profits and cut jobs and pay lower taxes, the fewer jobs there will be. Our country is currently in the midst of a long-term experiment that proves this point. The big news of the moment is a stock market slide that happened the same week as the supposedly heroic debt deal and record low tax rates in the United States.

There is a lot of psychology mingled into the resentment of so-called conservatives, and I think that astrology may be able to shed some light on what it’s about. It has a lot to do with how and where we direct our rage — we tend to project it onto others, or direct it inwardly as guilt. This combination of anger, resentment and guilt is taking over the emotional landscape on which politics is built. And it is having some extremely toxic effects.

The topic I want to cover this week involves the idea of what we share, which is the dominant theme of the United States charts.

One attribute of modern capitalism is that it wants to cut the government out of the loop entirely (with the notable exceptions of regulating pregnancy and policing and incarcerating the poor). If there’s going to be another Hoover Dam, it supposedly has to be built by a private company, for profit — and that ain’t happening. We have to rely on our common resources to do a project that big. But any notion of the commons is quickly going away as privatization sets in like hypothermia.

As the government is cut up and sold to industry, parking meters are becoming private (such as in Chicago and other cities). The Pennsylvania Turnpike was nearly sold to investors. Prisons are being privatized and have for years been privately traded on Wall Street. The military is becoming private (Blackwater Security, now called Xe Services, being the second largest member of the coalition fighting in Iraq). Numerous government services have been spun off into private hands, all as part of a long-term plan to dismantle the government. Homeland Security is enforcing trademark law, picking on people who have knock-off handbags and wear unofficial Major League Baseball hats.

But these things are the least of it. With the Citizens’ United decision coming out of the Supreme Court in January 2010, the political process is becoming the wholly-owned property of corporate interests, which can now spend unlimited money to influence elections. With this ruling, any hope of ‘campaign finance reform’ was set back to the days of monarchy [see Keith Olbermann explain the decision in this special comment].

We are in the midst of a total takeover of government by corporate interests. With each passing day the government has less power and corporate interests have more power, including over government and private individuals. The News Corp scandal is a demonstration of how much power a corporation can have, the latest twist being their use of drone aircraft within the United States.

In truth, this is a form of anarchy passing for conservatism. It’s not the authentic anarchy of high individual responsibility; rather, it’s the attitude that the FBI might get in the way of someone’s business plan for a criminal enterprise, so let’s cut their funding. (This is the same thing as a polluter, for whom the EPA is a problem, wanting to cut some more environmental regulators out of the budget, which just happened this week.) The result of all of this is less common ground for everyone. We are expected to share less — but then we have less.

To give a recent example, the government just had its power vastly reduced by The Deal that was passed by Congress and Pres. Obama this week. The federal government now has less financial flexibility, as its line of credit is being taken away (after much abuse by the very people who just took it away). Congress is being replaced by a committee of 12 people that will make its deficit and debt-related decisions for it. The private sector, once again, is being excused from paying into the public sector — that is to say, there are no tax increases for corporations or very high earners, and in fact there is a massive corporate tax holiday being planned.

USA: Two Charts, Two Images of a Country

Speaking of taxes, shared values and investments, let’s see what the USA charts have to say about these and some closely related issues. We do so in a moment when this whole realm is changing fast.

This is the traditional chart for the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Notice the cluster of planets to the right side of this chart. All the planets with the matching blue icon next to them are in Cancer and the 8th house. Even the planets that are not exactly in the house count, because they are in the sign Cancer and the whole sign applies to the 8th under the ‘whole sign houses’ method of reading. Notice Eris (in red, left side of chart, circle with arrow pointing down). It’s on the cusp of 2nd house — where we look for information about one’s own private values — suggesting that the personal values system of Americans tends to be in a state of chaos.

The primary chart for the United States is called the Sibly chart. It’s the most commonly accepted chart for the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While there are disputes about the exact time of the signing, you can think of the Sibly chart as the traditionally accepted chart, and one that has been well tested by many astrologers. It’s the chart for the 13 colonies stating their opposition to the crown of England, and basically declaring war. The Declaration of Independence gives a vision for the new nation that’s forming. The Declaration includes the quote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

It continues, “Whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.” Basically, it outlines a vision — and a long list of issues that reveal why the founders wanted to get busy enacting that vision.

We see the vision in the Sagittarius ascendant of the Sibly chart. That is the theme of the chart, and the image that the colonies are presenting to the king of England as well as to the world. Sagittarius is the sign that would include expansion (the Manifest Destiny that would push the new country out to the West Coast) as well as the spiritual vision embraced by references to the Creator. Sagittarius is the sign of ‘don’t crowd my space’, and the colonies were pushing back against quite a bit of tyrannical activity on the part of the king.

We also see idealism in the Aquarius Moon. You can think of this as the Moon that wants life to make sense; that believes in an egalitarian viewpoint on existence; that is able to rise above drowning in emotion and can apply reason to the questions of life.

But the heart of the Sibly chart is found in the 8th house. Here is a close-up of that house. This chart shows the Sun and five additional points in Cancer in the 8th. [Check here for a more detailed look at the 8th house.]

In this close-up of the 8th house of the Sibly chart, planets moving upward to the left are Venus, Jupiter, the Sun, Mercury, the vertex and the part of fortune. I am counting all of the sign Cancer as the 8th house under the whole-sign houses method. This is about a vast inheritance of shared wealth, but it also suggests a deep theme of transformation (a key theme of the 8th house).

The 8th is one of the most interesting houses of the 12, in part because so much happens in that house in our current version of the world. In the old days it started as the house of dowries and inheritances. As such it described death and also civil death (what happened to a woman when she got married — she would go from Jane Roe to Mrs. John Doe, losing her prior civil identity as part of the marriage contract).

The 8th covers inheritances, which is the money that changes hands as part of an estate or legacy. It’s therefore the house of shared resources. So by extension it covers the banking system, as well as many of the financial activities of corporations (such as investment and sale of stocks — however, speculation, a form of gambling, is covered by another house, the 5th). The 8th will often have the feeling of a life-or-death struggle rather than a game.

The United States has a massive inheritance indicated by its birth chart. It has Venus and Jupiter, the two benefics (planets associated with benefit and wealth) conjunct in a sign where they are both very happy (Cancer). Plus, the Sun is in this house and sign. The overall result is an orientation on the 8th house and also an indication that there is a lot of wealth to go around. Most of the people who signed the Declaration had no clue what was west of the Mississippi River. The explorers Lewis and Clark would not get there till 1806. So for years that inheritance sat like a vast, unclaimed trust fund, granted, one that the new owner often had to acquire by warfare as the claim was made.

In the sign Cancer, the use of that endowment would be for the common good: the vast American family, which has access to that wealth to share. Notably, the 8th is also the house of taxation. One way that wealth would be distributed would be through a system of taxes, which includes fair representation of those who are paying into the system.

Let’s hold that thought and switch charts, to a lesser-used one for the United States called Scorpionic America. That’s the chart for the Articles of Confederation in November 1777. The chart was researched and introduced to astrology by the late astrologer David Solte.

Scorpionic America is the chart for the signing of the Articles of Confederation, based on the historical research of late astrologer David Solte. The chart has Gemini rising, suggesting that the United States presents two radically different ways — for example as the paragon of democracy and the other as the place that still sponsors the illegal prison at Guantanamo Bay. The Gemini Moon is in the 12th, hinting at an abandonment of, or by, the feminine principle. Many planets are in Scorpio, and many others are in Capricorn in the 8th house. This chart is a picture of the control-freaky capitalist drama that is the USA.

David explained the chart to me personally shortly before he died in 2002. He said that the Declaration of Independence was 13 independent colonies choosing to do something together — declare freedom from England. The Articles of Confederation was the first time they formally joined together as one country, with a common set of rules binding them (this was replaced by the Constitution 10 years later in 1787). The chart is called Scorpionic America because the Sun is in Scorpio. The chart is dominated by three signs, however — Gemini, Scorpio and Capricorn.

Notice that there’s an interesting similarity between the Sibly chart and Scorpionic America: the 8th house has a lot of activity. The subject area remains the same but the theme shifts to the sign involved — Capricorn. Suddenly that collective wealth, that national inheritance, is all about business. Instead of two of the warmer, cuddlier planets, we get Mars and the South Node of the Moon — indicating an obsession with violence and power. It’s a very different kind of inheritance, and a whole different notion of sharing resources.

In particular, the South Node in the 8th house suggests a long history of power struggle, particularly in Capricorn. It’s almost as if the nascent country inherits and indeed becomes exactly what it’s trying to get away from by fighting the Revolutionary War.

There are three later discoveries in this house, particularly Pluto and Eris. These are pretty intense energies to put into the 8th and Capricorn, together suggestive of a lot of turmoil. Add to that the asteroid Juno — often representing a sense of possessiveness and small-mindedness — and we have a picture of the business climate that later emerges around the United States economy: viciously competitive, unstable and driven by selfish interests rather than collective interests.

That will happen as Pluto goes through this house, first making an exact conjunction to Eris in 2012, with powerful effects well into the mid 2020s.

Scorpionic America has Gemini rising, which reveals the dual identity of the United States. We start off fighting for our independence, and then end up bombing other countries in the name of democracy. Uranus in the ascendant has an edgy, erratic, volatile feeling. Uranus plus Gemini rising has the feeling of, watch out, don’t know who I really am — I could become anyone.

In a sense, the Sibly chart represents the initial idealistic vision of the United States at the time independence was declared, and Scorpionic America represents what the country eventually becomes.

Note that the 8th house has many themes involving sexuality. There is an association with the 8th sign (Scorpio) and also a connection point between marriage and sex (the marital contract being the thing that supposedly makes sex and the resulting children ‘legitimate’). Sibly has a family, nourishment and pleasure concept of sex (Venus and Jupiter in Cancer); Scorpionic America has a puritanical, regressive and patriarchal one, dominated by a sense of power-over rather than sharing. There is plenty of desire in that Capricorn 8th of Scorpionic America, but it’s in a heck of a lot of conflict, and seems destined to become an instrument of political oppression.

Current Transits: The 2012 Aspect

Perhaps the most interesting thing about these charts is that they’re both under the influence of what I call the 2012 aspect — Uranus square Pluto. That is the slow-moving, slowly building aspect that makes its first exact contact in June 2012.

Notice the degrees involved — both planets will be aspecting the 8th house clusters in both United States charts repeatedly for the next seven years or longer.

Both of the USA charts have planets and other points packed into the early degrees of cardinal signs (Cancer and Capricorn), which is where all the action is now. The cardinal cross is currently home to Uranus in Aries, Mars in Cancer, Saturn in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn, all of which are rattling both United States charts, in particular their 8th houses. The Sibly chart’s 8th house is taking a series of oppositions from Pluto in Capricorn, and squares from Uranus in Aries. Scorpionic America is taking conjunctions from Pluto in Capricorn and squares from Uranus in Aries. All of this involves the 8th houses of both charts, where the issue of shared finances and joint resources is expressed.

That is a picture of the volatility of the times we are in, and it’s also suggesting a huge transformation of some kind is ahead. One chart suggests a values system of greed and obsession with money (transiting Pluto in Capricorn in the 2nd house of individual wealth, opposing all those Cancer planets in the 8th house of shared wealth). The other suggests that America is about to collect on its past karma (transiting Pluto in Capricorn conjunct Eris, the South Node and Mars in the 8th house).

Taken together, these transits add up to nothing less than a total transformation, on the level of a revolution. We might not see how this is possible now, but as the next few seasons unfold it will become obvious. The revolution is about shared resources on one level, and about values on the other. Yet this is not merely theoretical change or contemplating an idea.

Many people are going to experience this as a challenge, but it’s also the change many, many people have been wanting. All of the 8th house placements in both U.S. charts are coming under transits by planets that get results even when working alone (Uranus and Pluto even individually are forces to be reckoned with) but when acting together, they have been known to topple empires.

Mercury retrograde is a challenging event for many people. I do my best to counter those challenges with creativity and the intelligence made available by a careful reading of the charts. Some astrologers describe the Leo/Virgo line as the sphinx point — where cat (Leo) meets human (Virgo). The crossing of house/sign cusps blends themes and helps us navigate unfamiliar territory. There are planets hanging out here — Transpluto on the Leo/Virgo line, and Neptune on the Pisces/Aquarius line. This adds some intrigue and depth to the circumstances surrounding this retrograde.

Leo/Virgo is the line where play meets work; where self-expression meets service; where passion meets the details of creative process. For each of the 12 signs I explore that relationship. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — One of the great quests of the physical plane is what to do about fear. There is certainly plenty to worry about, and anxiety has a way of running loose in the psyche, attaching itself to anyone or anything that it pleases. Good thing it’s extremely rare that any of our paranoid fantasies come true. That said, on the other side of every fear is an idea. Fear is misdirected creative energy; therefore it’s the opportunity to channel that same energy into a positive direction. This requires some vigilance and mental discipline. It’s helpful to recognize all mental or emotional energy as inherently creative. Then you decide that you’re the one electing what to do with that energy; and as you do this you’re likely to encounter the idea that lives wrapped inside any negative thought. There’s a word for this process — and that would be healing.

Part of the mirage is that this is about you and someone else, or you and your desire to be with someone else. Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Don’t believe everything you hear, but I suggest you take under advisement something you do hear that sounds incredulous. The more inclined you are to reject something as unbelievable, the more carefully I suggest you analyze it. Pay attention to the implications of whether you believe or don’t believe something. They actually exist; you’re essentially in a situation where what you believe will have consequences. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — You will need to keep a handle on your emotions the next few weeks. Mars, your traditional ruling planet, has entered water sign Cancer, which for you is about your most passionately held beliefs. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You are in no mood to be challenged, but how would you feel about being desired? Just be sure to sort out the difference between the two. You may not think you’re capable of telling one form of passion from the other (not everyone is). As for how to make the distinction — well, I’m a big fan of curiosity. I suggest following that. If you feel curious, then you’re not being repelled. Even if you feel a mix of repelled and curious (the intriguing but slightly creepy factor), you can afford to trust that curiosity, and make use of what you learn as a result. In other words, if you’re sniffing around a possibility and something happens, or you discover something, that’s useful information. There is little risk in finding out, considerable risk in acting out of ignorance, and actual danger in not using what you know.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Neptune has just re-entered your birth sign. It was there since December 1998, then it finally went into Pisces earlier this year, and now it’s back for one last gesture of completion. This completion phase lasts until February 2012. That’s not very long. During that time, I suggest you do an assessment of all the times you’ve believed something that was not true; every time you’ve been deceived; every time you fooled yourself. I mean the important moments, by the way, involving the significant changes you’ve been through. I also suggest you review how, during this past decade-plus, you’ve gradually softened the sharp edges of your preconceptions to something smoother and more pleasant to the touch. Remember how much effort it took to balance thought and feeling — which, by the way, is a wholesome path to honesty with yourself.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — One of the prime questions of the week is, in what ways do the people you encounter mirror you? We talk a lot about mirroring when relationships are discussed in any meaningful context, though we don’t usually remember that reflections present what is known as a mirror image. It’s similar in appearance, but everything is reversed. You are facing into a reflection, and it’s either showing you something specific, or you’re looking for something specific. It may be an example of what not to be; it may be an example of what you’re not. You may see an example of who you want to become, or more likely, certain traits you want to adapt. The key is to look into this reflection, and actually notice what you see. The image will change even under your gaze. You will notice things from the past, and you may glimpse at the future. Yet what exists right now is the most interesting of all.

And What Are We Attracting?

Dear Planet Waves Reader:

In recent podcasts, I’ve been tracking a planetary alignment that’s soon to arrive, just as Venus stations direct next week. This grouping, already underway, is a collection of both major and minor planets gathering around a deep-space point called the Great Attractor, located in mid-Sagittarius. These include planets you’ve definitely heard of (Mercury, Mars) and ones you may not have heard of (Pholus, Ixion).

On one level this looks like a touch of domestic political chaos here in the United States (not exactly news; U.S. politics is currently verging on requiring a locked ward). But this alignment is definitely news, in that it portends something unusual. Or perhaps it’s describing something unusual that’s already happening. Notably, this in turn will be followed up by Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius and Capricorn at the end of the year, mingled with a pair of eclipses.

Venus for her part stations direct in Libra after a six week retrograde; this is a different event from the alignment with the Great Attractor, but they are synchronous, so they count as one, focused in linear time on Nov. 18 — in less than a week. Venus stationing is going to come with a bit of tension and release, also underway, which will get all the molecules in the sky shaking. I’ll come back to Venus stationing in Libra, because I believe that event holds the key to the rest.

The Great Attractor gets its name because it’s drawing toward it a million galaxies, while it rushes away from them and they follow in endless pursuit. Our galaxy (the Milky Way, a spiral island of 300 billion stars) is one of those doing the chasing; so are all of our neighboring islands in what is called the Local Group of galaxies. Note, I’m not talking about the Galactic Center here. That’s the core of our own galaxy; the Great Attractor is like some giant vortex pulling everything its way, a bit like an anti-big-bang.

We cannot see the Great Attractor; it’s invisible on the normal spectrum of light. We know it’s there because 1. So much is getting pulled toward it, and 2. It’s broadcasting on every frequency except for visible light — such as X ray, gamma ray, and even Miley Ray (Disney owns a piece of the action). The Great Attractor happens to be aligned with the plane of our own galaxy, so we’re peering over at it obscured by thousands of light years of dust, gas and other stars. But we know it’s there, likely to be a vast dark matter point that my colleague Philip Sedgwick describes as prodigious and the largest thing known to science. “It’s the ultimate Sagittarian statement of ‘get away from me, don’t crowd my space’,” he said in a Planet Waves interview.

We live in a galaxy containing as many as 300 billion stars. The nearest galaxy is two million light years away. Our group of galaxies is called the Local Group, containing over 30 galaxies. This Local Group covers over 10 million light years in diameter, further away than California. The Local Group belongs to the Virgo supercluster of galaxies. The Virgo supercluster is about 200 million light years in diameter. The Great Attractor is a gravitational anomaly somewhere in the Virgo supercluster, pulling the other galaxy groups towards the Hydra and Centaurus constellations. Though it’s moving very fast, it’s so far away that it appears to be standing still. So it’s considered a fixed point that is located at just over 14 degrees of Sagittarius. Due to this Sagittarius alignment, that point is getting a lot of action the next couple of weeks. But let’s consider it first by itself.

In consciousness, the Great Attractor manifests as a certain kind of intense. It can feel hotly polarized. People with a prominent Great Attractor in their charts will cultivate strong feelings in others, and can often be the subject of contention or controversy. They have the ability to make unusually close friends with equally formidable enemies. There is a potency characterized by this point that holds two extremes and presents them with lots of fodder for spiritual growth.

So now we have this collection of planets gathering around this odd point in space. There are a good few of them. I won’t be able to go over every one in this article, but I’m going to factor them all into my interpretation. And over the weekend I’ll post a full list to the blog, in case you enjoy the feeling of data overload (I know I do).

Let’s start with Ixion. This is a Pluto-like point (a plutino) orbiting our Sun discovered in 2001. My key phrase for Ixion is anyone is capable of anything. I associate it with the quality of amorality. There is also a property of getting a second chance, but what one does with that new chance is up for grabs. Ixion on the Great Attractor during the past couple of years has helped make a big hit out of the idea that there is no difference between right and wrong. Do we need to learn about this all over again, or can we do it more fficiently, say by remembering?

More recently, Pholus has arrived. Pholus, the second centaur planet ever discovered (that was in 1992, after Chiron in 1977), releases contained energy. My favorite key phrase for Pholus is small cause, big effect. With Pholus we can see the dangerous influences of alcohol, of idle curiosity, of idle idealization of an idol (such as the charismatic effects of famous people) and the unleashing of events that have unforeseen and far-reaching consequences. Gee, this is sounding like a lot of fun so far. All centaurs add a quality of reactivity and potency.

Next let’s add Mercury into the mix. That would say apply all of this to words and technology, as well as to commerce. But moreover, something has seized the mind: something besides intelligence. Mars will be there too, which adds a flavor of aggression. Most contemporary astrologers looking at this event merely see a Mercury-Mars conjunction in Sagittarius; the rest of the points are invisible to them — with one possible exception, in the form of a major asteroid. Looking at this event in low-res, you see hot words, such as an argument, thinking too fast and too big at the same time, and some exaggerated issue or situation.

The scale and exaggeration stuff comes from the background sign, Sagittarius. And, it fits; watch a real news program that covers national and world affairs and things will indeed seem weirdly but somehow actually and indeed dangerously exaggerated and bombastic; a kind of sports event.

A few astrologers will be looking at Pallas, the second asteroid (or minor planet) ever discovered. That was in 1802, so she’s been around long enough for a few people to notice. Pallas (associated with the goddess Athena, a warrior born in full armor) has two main themes — strategy and politics. Since Sagittarius has an international theme, this would be international politics and strategy. Mars and Pallas together point to something military or at least strategic.

Are you getting the picture? It looks like some hotly polarized, extremely exaggerated international situation that pops up seemingly out of nowhere. Sagittarius adds the flavor of religious zeal, which we’ve been so lavishly indulging since Pluto went into Sagittarius many years ago and everything became a matter of ‘faith’. Or, we could be talking about the most spectacular international vacation anyone has ever taken in their lives, perhaps including an actual visit to the Galactic Core.

To test the geopolitics angle of this theory, let’s check in briefly with three charts, to see if any of them has sensitive points around this area: the U.S. chart, the chart of Israel and the chart of Iran.

First, the USA Sibley chart, the most commonly used July 4, 1776 horoscope for the States. (I covered this chart over the summer.) Let’s see, that chart has mid-Sagittarius in the ascendant: this whole circus takes place in the USA’s 1st house, with planets making exact contact with the rising degree, 12+ Sagittarius. As my Aunt Josie would say, How about that? What might be brewing deep in the hearts and minds of the enlightened statesmen at the helm of our great empire?

Next, flipping through the indispensable Book of World Horoscopes by Nicholas Campion, let’s visit the chart of Israel. (I must visit the actual country soon.) My preferred chart for Israel (for astrologers, the 4 pm chart) has 14+ Aquarius rising. The Sagittarius event takes place in its 10th house. This alignment makes an exact trine to Israel’s natal Saturn-Pluto conjunction in Leo on its 7th house (that gets a big gee whiz — talk about a chart with a setup for contentious relationships). The trine could well open an energy line from that feisty, conflicted 7th house (the relationship house). Speaking as a psychological astrologer, by the way, Israel likes to project its inner psychological strife onto others outside its borders: very 7th house. If you’re different but live within the country, you can do fine in Israel.

As for Iran, another old place I would love to visit: I’ll use the current chart — that of the 1979 revolution. The Sagittarius alignment is close to Iran’s 9th house Neptune. That represents Iran’s persistent condition of religious delusion, as well as an international vulnerability. Neptune often works like a blind spot. Neptune, which has the widest orb of influence of all the planets, is just four degrees from the Great Attractor. Neptune + Great Attractor can make a lot of waves. People react to those with Neptune + Great Attractor without understanding why they are reacting.

This event also squares the lunar nodes of Iran (which go across mid-Virgo and Pisces). That represents a turning point.

One last bit out of the Iran chart. The midheaven or 10th house cusp (the angle of the chart that’s about power, reputation and the government itself) is at 2+ Capricorn. Does that sound familiar? Pluto is right there, right now. Pluto in the 10th, especially in Capricorn, can have a desire to concentrate power. I’m surprised we haven’t heard a lot more from Iran this year, because the cardinal cross that’s been dancing around has been all over this chart.

One last item. There’s a chart about which I seem to be the only person who likes to write, and that is called the Nuclear Axis. This is the chart for the first self-sustaining nuclear reaction (sometimes called the atom split chart, not strictly accurate), which led directly to the atomic bomb. The Nuclear Axis chart has a hot spot, which is a line right across mid-Gemini-Sagittarius. If you read my earlier article, you’ll see that this chart can function like a trigger for nuclear events; it was also directly involved in the Sept. 11 incident, the location of which got the name Ground Zero — a nuclear term.

Now, you have some insight into how astrologers make predictions. There are many techniques, though basically we look at a lot of factors and then see what they all point to; we look at what picture emerges.

However, both the metaphysics and the ethics of prediction are a huge gray area. Prediction is a form of inviting or creating manifestation. So I’m not going to predict what all these alignments seem to be illustrating. Rather, I’m going to propose that deep in our hearts, we might want to get wise to this kind of bullshit being foisted on us again and again. And that deep in our hearts, we might, we just might, want to manifest something different. I believe that we can, because we are creating the world as we go. I am not saying this as a New Age belief. I am saying it from observation and an understanding of history. Unless you believe that the world is run by lizard-reptile space entities, there’s nobody down here but us chickens.

Venus stationing direct can release the power of love and authentic values, which can color this whole event. The way to do that is to want a better world. The people, such as bankers, who are making the world better for themselves, are doing so because they want to. And we on the ground need to muster up the audacity to have more than hope. We need the audacity of a vision.

I am always amazed — stunned, in fact — at the tolerance of Americans for yet another war, threat, attack or conflict. Isn’t anybody sick of it yet? Is anyone sick of the violence for no purpose other than profits, which have this odd tendency to drain our economy of all its resources? Don’t we want something better? Don’t we believe that the resources of society could be more equitably distributed? That the needs of more people — or of all people — can be taken care of?

I am, and I do.

Think of how long we’ve been pelted with threats and negativity. We’ve lived through one war after another since going back how many decades? Ask yourself: do you actually want something better for yourself and for the world?

I’m aware that my life started in a bit of a crossfire hurricane. It’s taken me some time to work my way out of it; to allow in a different feeling tone. When my mother was five months pregnant, JFK was killed. When I was six months old, there was a false flag event called the Tonkin Gulf Incident, which set off the Vietnam War as we know it — and which never happened (the Vietnam War definitely happened; the Tonkin Gulf Incident did not happen, but it was used to justify a decade of war that spread into four Southeast Asian countries).

A false flag event is when one person or entity creates an attack on another, then blames someone else to get a desired outcome. Whoever you think did Sept. 11, it was by definition a false flag event because the U.S. government blamed one guy (Osama bin Laden) and then started a war with someone else who had nothing to do with it (Saddam Hussein). The one odd thing both guys had in common was being on the CIA payroll. False flag events take many forms; I believe the banking collapse of 2008 qualifies as one. It served mainly to enrich the people who were caught in the ‘crisis’.

I recognize that we’re talking about seemingly vast powers that seem to tower over us. Yet they get their power because we give ours up. Isn’t that obvious by now? I think that part of the problem is that we tend to be more seduced by fear than by peace. I guess you could blame the devil, but we do choose how to respond when something happens. The moral psychology here, I know, involves ‘security’. That is, there are many who believe that a seeming threat is best responded to with violence or overzealous security. Many, in the face of any seeming danger, have a need to belong and to take sides that trumps all common sense, and in that state of mind it can feel like doing anything else is pandering to the ‘enemy’.

Fear takes many forms, and it makes us susceptible to control. The people who manufacture fear know this. Anti-Islamic sentiments in the United States have never been more whipped up and exploited than they are now. I mean, you would think that Muslims were all gay socialists looking for a place to get married, the way certain political factions want us to feel about them.

When you look at the astrology and feel the current climate of the country and indeed the world, it’s unsettling the way things feel like they’re being driven — and at an extremely fast pace. I’m not predicting an outcome here; rather I am suggesting that we have a choice in the matter of what we create and how we respond to it. That choice is hinted at by Venus stationing direct in the sign of decisions, Libra.

And I’m saying that just in case something a a little extra weird does happen, you get to apply discernment. You get to make up your mind about what it means, whether it’s true and what your correct response should be. You might be thinking, fat lot of good that’s going to do. But I can tell you this.

So far, our silence has been taken as consent.

And In Other Large News

The Sun is still in Scorpio but the news is seeming rather Sagittarian these days. Scientists this week figured out that there are two enormous, ancient bubbles of gamma rays, one each above and below our galaxy. They had to look using extremely fancy eyeglasses — NASA’s Fermi Gamma-Ray Telescope. The discovery creates a new kind of ‘thing’ known to science.

According to Discovery News, among the 1,500 sources of gamma rays Fermi has mapped so far, nothing resembles the bubble-shaped structures, which stretch across more than half of the visible sky, from the constellation Virgo to the constellation Grus.

“You have to ask where could energy like that come from,” astronomer Doug Finkbeiner, with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told Discovery News. Hints of the bubbles appeared years earlier in X-ray surveys and in maps of the cosmic microwave background radiation stemming from the Big Bang explosion.

Speaking of big bangs, Obama is poised to go along with extending Bush-era tax cuts to the wealthisst 2% of Americans, that is, those making over $250,000 a year. This is a Republican plan, now apparently embraced fully by the administration as well, that would balloon the federal deficit that the Republicans elected last week said they were determined to cut. “We have to deal with the world as we find it,” said Obama’s top adviser, David Axelrod.

Speaking of — a bipartisan commission appointed by Pres. Obama Thursday issued a proposal for deficit reduction that would cut everything from the military to Social Security to basic tax exemptions for the middle class, such as the home mortgage deduction.

And the European Union is set to ban all medicinal herbs on April 1, 2011. This plan goes back 10 years, and this appears to be a final sunrise provision that takes effect next year. Called the Traditional Herbal Medicines Product Directive, it went into effect in 2005, but blogs in Europe are saying that this new provision takes effect in 2011.

Companies that manufacture herbal products must be able to prove that the product is safe, unlike the pharmaceutical industry, which this law benefits enormously. Aries (March 20-April 19)
A relationship is about to reveal its mysteries and secrets, just as you discover that you have bigger plans. The question is, are the two in harmony? It’s amazing what people will sacrifice for special relationships. So I suggest you be cautious of the equation, ‘I would do this, if I wasn’t in a relationship’, or any of its derivatives. I think it makes much more sense to choose relationships that support all of our goals and affirm who we actually are. And this, you can choose. I would caution that you need to check carefully whether what you believe about what someone thinks is really what they think. You may be seeing your own beliefs projected like light into a fog. Then again, you may actually be constrained by the relationship. To sort this out you need to do a careful reality check, both with yourself and with your partner. The next two weeks will prove to be instructive, and instrumental to your progress.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)
It’s easier to change your mental patterns than you think. Part of your typical challenge is forgetting that patterns are established in the past. Most of what you’re dealing with is habituation, legacy material and false memory. Patterns are not simply eliminated; usually, when transcended, they are replaced by new, hopefully more productive patterns. The key to the whole process is consciousness. It’s one thing to think; it’s another thing to be aware of your thoughts; it’s yet another thing to be aware that you not only influence the process, but that you run the whole thing. That influence is what you’re gaining power over. Remember, it’s gained by awareness in the present and making choices in the present. The feeling of the decision is an easy deliberation between points of view or potential outcomes; the options should present you with obvious pictures, such as ‘this is judgmental’ versus ‘this is self-affirming’. Remember, obvious.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)
Mercury is now in your opposite sign, so you can take advantage of that as an invitation to open up communication where previously it’s been tense — particularly recently. That’s another way of saying cultivate trust and respect as a strategy — preferably, your only strategy. Whatever path you take through the unusual relationship circumstances that arise in the next few weeks, trust and respect will be your most dependable tool. These circumstances may be contentious; they may be passionate and strange; they may transcend your old ideas of what a relationship should be, so you may as well check those ideas at the door. The point of forthcoming events, it would seem, is to resolve old sexual karma rather than to make new karma.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)
This time in your life is about questioning the whole nature of commitments. You’ve been struggling with this for years, and now you can ask the questions that get the right answers. What you’re seeking is clarity. On that quest, the first thing to know is when you’re not clear. Obviously, you would need contrast so that you can discern the difference between clarity and lack thereof. In your current solar chart, this translates to clarity in commitments. This in turn breaks down into two main categories — what you’re committed to and what, precisely, this means; and what you expect of others who you perceive as committed to you. Now for the question — what is the source of your data? Are your expectations grounded or ungrounded? Can you have a conversation about them where you could reasonably predict some solid agreement? The time to test your theory is during the next few days.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)
Over the next couple of weeks, I suggest you be especially careful in all matters involving children, as well as the sexual activity that might lead to them. Careful means full of care, and I would say a bit cautious as well. I’m not suggesting that there’s danger, but rather the potential for choices and actions to have unexpected consequences. So while your sense of play and adventure are pulling you in one direction (like saying nuts! to the rules), I suggest you guide yourself in another, toward discernment. This might be tricky, and you may really feel pulled in the direction of taking risks you would never, ever, take under other circumstances. Consider all possibilities, yes, and also consider consequences both foreseen and unforeseen. You do have a guardrail: your mind. Intelligence does not present an absolute boundary, just a useful tool for evaluation. This is a fine time to put it to maximum use — and still have plenty of fun.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)
Events in and around your family of origin will give you some rare opportunity for perspective. Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)
You’re at the center of a far-flung circle of friends and associates. More to the point, you’re like a node point that is, in itself, a source of energy around which many people gather. And right now that node point is getting hotter by the minute. I suggest you follow the basic rule of improvisational theater: yes keeps the show going. This would be yes, and rather than yes, but. Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)
The next seven to 10 days are a phase when some stunning career developments are possible for you. One key is communication. Another is foreseeing effects and consequences. I can divide this into several subtopics. One is how you focus your intentions; another is how you set your tone; and the other is keeping the right balance between casting a wide net and being specific in what you say to whom. All of this falls under the general heading of strategy, a theme that holds a key place in your solar charts, particularly where career matters are concerned. What actually gets the results will surprise you, so there’s no use knocking yourself out. Be efficient, and make sure you cover the necessary traditional bases (updated CV, business card, checking email) and that you play the random chances. Small moves will have potentially large effects, so keep mistakes down to a minimum. If you happen to not get it right the first time, backtrack quickly and get it right as soon as possible.
