Tending a Grateful Space

By Amanda Painter

Jupiter is currently making its way through the last degree of Sagittarius, bringing to a close this year in its home sign. Before you look ahead to what Jupiter in Capricorn is all about, you might take a little time to consider the area(s) of your life where expansion, broad or far-reaching vision, acquisition of new knowledge and experiences, adventure, distant travel, attainment and sharing of wisdom, increased optimism or faith, religious or philosophical zeal (including fundamentalism), or self-indulgence have been prominent.

Where have those themes intermingled in your life? What new vistas — inner or outer — have you encountered as a result?

What now feels like a distant daydream (emblematic of Jupiter’s long square to Neptune in Pisces this past year)? In what ways do you feel like you’ve mastered — or at least gained a foothold in — a new life-level?

I ask, because when Jupiter enters Capricorn on Monday, Dec. 2, the emphasis will shift to the practical application of whatever you have learned, envisioned and acquired.

Saturn rules Capricorn. And while Saturn/Cap can have a dampening effect on some of Jupiter’s traits, it’s also possible for Jupiter to infuse some optimism, humor and breadth of perception into the more conservative, rigid and dry realm of Saturn and Capricorn.

A New Moon birthday is a pretty solid indicator of embarking upon a new phase in your life. Shoring up financial security is a priority, and even small steps taken now can yield rewards. So follow through on leads and don’t hold back. Creative self-expression or a bit or romance (or both) can help you discover more of who you are.

Today the Sun and Moon meet for the Sagittarius New Moon (read additional coverage about it here). This is exact at about 10:05 am EST / 7:05 am PST (15:05:28 UTC). At its essence, the Sagittarius New Moon is about spirituality and truth. Yet it’s in contact with a couple of centaur planets. In astrology, centaurs represent healing processes — and healing processes can be uncomfortable for a little while, as you make new choices and eventually emerge into a space of greater clarity.

In this case, the Sagittarius New Moon is square the centaur Nessus in Pisces. This looks like spirituality and truth running up against resentment and jealousy. You cannot have both — not if you want to feel better. So which are you going to choose? You have resources available to lean on, even if your bank account is empty or you feel lonely. For example, you know which activities, people and environments leave you feeling nourished and cared for, and which leave you feeling depleted. Chances are you also know that when you nourish and care for others, the world suddenly feels a lot friendlier.

Emotional depth carries over from the weekend to begin the workweek, thanks to the Moon wrapping up its eventful transit through Scorpio. The Moon ingresses Sagittarius Tuesday at 3:11 am EST / 12:11 am PST (08:10:52 UTC Tuesday).

Soon after entering Sagittarius the Moon meets up with the Sun for a New Moon. This is an opening into the future, as Sagittarius is inclined to be visionary. Notice how you create your life, and how you go from idea to action.

The Mars-Uranus opposition of the weekend is now dissipating. Venus is still in Sagittarius, separating from Sunday’s conjunction to Jupiter and the Galactic Core. The challenge is to focus on the spiritual essence of what we call love. Spiritual means truth, faith and trust.

Venus enters Capricorn late Monday the 25th (early on the 26th in Europe), which fosters a more pragmatic and duty-oriented idea of love. The high ideals of Sagittarius can seem to disappear as planets enter Capricorn, but the truth remains. Generosity, heart and receptivity still deserve a place at your table, and you’re the one who must hold that space open.

We are now under multiple influences with different feeling tones. The bold astrology of the moment is the Venus-Jupiter conjunction on the Galactic Core, described in detail here. This is high-vibration astrology, a calling out to truth and optimism.

Mars has just entered Scorpio and opposes Uranus today, with an edgy vibe. Mercury recently turned to direct motion there as well. This describes strong feelings that may overpower certain matters you thought you had resolved. Take the time to sort out what you really want, slow down enough to notice what your emotions are telling you.

The Moon enters Scorpio this morning, deepening the mood, and granting access to what you may have been feeling but did not recognize. Note that the Moon is at the very end of its monthly cycle, so this is a time of closure and completion in preparation for the Sagittarius New Moon on early on Tuesday.

Written in the Planets

Today and tomorrow, the astrology is marked by two rather different major aspects. One is a conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in Sagittarius: the planets of love and expansion in the sign of optimism. On its surface, this describes fantastic social energy, compassion, and ‘luck’ or abundance — especially for relationships of all kinds. Yet it comes with a twist, in the form of the Galactic Core (our ‘cosmic homing signal’) and the centaur Ixion (amorality), which are also part of the conjunction.

You might notice today how you respond to restlessness, opportunities for indulgence, and second chances. What do you do when you think nobody is looking? Do you take the abundance in your life for granted, or do you try to stay conscious of making the most of it and sharing it?

The other big aspect in the works is Mars in Scorpio (anger, sex and secrets) opposite Uranus in Taurus (disruptions of routine). This can describe unexpected ego conflicts — particularly the explosive release of long pent-up anger, whether yours or someone else’s. Recent activity in Scorpio might have kept something quiet that now needs to find a way out. That said, if you’ve been consciously seeking creative ways to redirect your life, encounters this weekend could offer the resistance you need to galvanize your efforts.

The Moon entering Gemini today at 3:46 am EST should lighten things up after the recent Full Moon intensity. Conversations are likely to move at a quicker pace — though with Gemini’s ruler, Mercury, continuing its retrograde journey, this could open mouths wide enough for feet to fit all too easily. Luckily you can probably correct things just as quickly — though with things like important business emails, consciously slowing your pace down could save valuable time and extra steps.

Venus in breezy, optimistic Sagittarius square Neptune in romanticizing Pisces has a “sky’s the limit” feel when it comes to idealizing a love interest. Fantasies are fun, as long as you keep checking them against reality. Additional factors suggest that indulging daydreams could have a strong pull but might be quite polarizing if someone feels they can’t live up to expectations. That said, anything that fosters sharing good vibes is needed and welcome on this planet. Venus-Neptune could also describe far-reaching artistic vision, and just enough inner tension to spur using your creativity in some spiritually tuned-in way.

This morning’s Taurus Full Moon is exact at 8:34 am EST. Chances are you’ve been feeling it build for at least a couple of days, even if you could not quite put your finger on what was brewing. Full Moons, visible in the sky, are literally a reflection: the Moon reflects the light of the Sun, though one would swear something so bright must be shining all on its own. It’s a useful dynamic to keep in mind every 28 days, particularly if you find yourself reacting strongly to someone else’s emotions or attitude toward you, and wondering “Where the heck is all this coming from?”

A more productive question might be to ask what they’re actually showing you about yourself. Is it possible you’re projecting some barely registered feelings or motives of your own onto them?

For this Full Moon, the Scorpio Sun is conjunct retrograde Mercury, and they are opposing the Moon in a tight conjunction to the asteroid Vesta in Taurus. So on one side we have symbols of conscious awareness and a deep memory process (Sun+Mercury); on the other side, emblems of intuition/emotion and embodied devotion/space-holding (Moon+Vesta). The signs Scorpio and Taurus both relate strongly to the emotional and physical experiences of sex (which implies surrender) and security (which implies control).

That all potentially translates into a visceral sense of conflicting desires and motives that could play out between you and another person. It need not be a showdown; it could easily morph into a mutually satisfying — if intense — exchange. Getting there, however, will require owning what you’re feeling, what you want, and how vulnerable you’re willing to be about it. Even if you experience this event entirely internally, rather than in a seemingly stuck situation with someone else, the questions and the available payoff are the same. Other factors in the chart suggest there’s plenty of energy available for physical or personal growth endeavors (double entendre not intended, but definitely an option) — but you’ll have to take the initiative.
