It’s natural to have periods in your life when you need to slow down, as well as those during which you work harder and achieve more. You might want to be a 24/7 efficiency machine, though it’ll help you to remember that you’re made of organic flesh. Make room in your life for the ebbs and flows. There will be time enough to get plenty done; and taking pauses to listen to the beat of the world, and really live, can stoke your imagination like virtually nothing else.

Mercury (the planet of mind and communication) makes a conjunction to the asteroid Pallas (reason, political strategy) in Scorpio today. Although Scorpio is a water sign related to the emotions, Pallas describes a less emotional, more detached ability to broach certain topics. Specifically, there’s potential here to discuss deep and even taboo subject matter in a fairly objective way. This could come as a relief if you’ve been stewing about something and have been on the fence about whether to pipe up.

Scorpio’s relationship to sensitive areas of life (sex, death, money, profound transformation) offers some hints about where the conversation may need to venture. If these things usually make you squirm, all the more reason to take advantage of today’s astrology. Just watch your motives if you start getting ‘strategic’ about the discussion. The idea is to allow candid frankness, not to weaponize what you have to say. Think in terms of entering into the matter at hand together with the other person, rather than ambushing them with secrets as a way to dominate them.

This morning’s last quarter Moon bodes well for moving into the home stretch of anything you’ve been working on the last few weeks. That aspect spans from Cancer to Libra. Once the Moon enters Leo around midday EDT, conversations could feel more social, open and forthright. If someone seems to be overstating their case, you can likely chalk it up to a penchant for dramatic flair. Why take it personally when you can be entertained?

In 2020 we have not one but two conjunctions that mark the turn of a generation, and of an era in history. On Jan. 12, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn form their once per 33-year conjunction. Then on Dec. 21. 2020, Jupiter and Saturn, both now in Aquarius, form a conjunction in the first degree of that sign. Read more here…

You have not chosen an easy path, but you have chosen a meaningful one — or you surely want to. You have things you want to do, and you have the passion to accomplish them. Here is what I suggest you remember, and remember all the time: you are your most important asset. Not your money, not your friends, not your circumstances — you personally. That includes your talents, your knowledge, and your spiritual connection, which I suggest you focus on first and foremost. Any problems you may face are merely puzzles to be solved.

Chances are you can trace many of your sensitivities, concerns, sense of security (or lack thereof) and emotional response habits to those of your immediate family members. They, in turn, can trace theirs back to the previous generation. And so on. As Venus opposes Quaoar in Capricorn today, notice whether you see any of that mirrored to you in any way.

The great thing about such moments is that when we’re able to recognize what someone is showing us as our own ‘stuff’, we get an opportunity to choose a new approach if we don’t care for what we see. If you’re being shown a constructive or creative way of meeting the world (whether it’s your family’s typical approach or something new), you can be more conscious about modeling it for others.

The Moon continues through Leo with flair today, lending end-of-the-week activities an extra social vibe. Playing with kids could feel especially rewarding — and if you’re lucky enough to enjoy a four-day weekend, offers a great way to keep the energy moving, especially if adult interactions seem fraught with miscommunication or frustration. Mercury is very slow and powerful now as it prepares to station retrograde on Sunday, requiring extra focus with communication of all sorts. Easy does it.

In the background today is some great energy for working steadily for what you want, thanks to a Sun-Saturn trine. That might apply to what you hope to accomplish just this day, or regarding a longer-term project. At the same time, we have an interesting first quarter Moon (Leo Moon square the Taurus Sun): the asteroids Arachne and Minerva are closely conjunct the Sun. Minerva is the Roman version of Athena, who was closely connected to Arachne in myth (Google it). One possible reading of this combination is that awareness of your inherent talent, power and wisdom will help to get things done, as long as you also demonstrate some genuine humility in whatever you do today.

There’s always something left to learn, after all — and pride can easily trip up even the most gifted person. It’s not as complex as it seems, and this approach could in fact help keep a situation from getting a little thorny. An opposition between Mars in Gemini and the Galactic Core in Sagittarius seems to be asking what your options are in the face of some kind of spiritual truth — or someone who appears to represent such. Are you caught in moral ambivalence, or is there a clear path forward? How do your desires relate to ‘the highest good for all concerned’?

Dream big, and let the tide of fervor and inspiration carry you along for a while. Once you have the broad concept in place, you can begin to fill in the details. At first, though, it can be immensely useful to spend time with your big vision and experience enthusiasm filling you up like fuel. This doesn’t replace hard work, but it does give life and interest to your efforts, and the gift of perseverance when it’s needed.

Written for the Planets

The Moon moving through the last third of Leo today suggests a more social Monday than usual. Whether you’re looking for emotional contact from others (which might come via a friend or acquaintance rather than something more intimate), feeling inclined to offer support and generosity to others, or getting chatty in the digital realms, keep the energy moving but remember that it’s not all about you. Juno in Gemini opposite the Great Attractor in Sagittarius could describe a sense that relationship needs are either polarizing, pulling you along, or just out of reach. Is it something you can talk about with a friend or two, so you don’t feel like things are at quite such a stalemate? (Note also that we’re building to a Full Moon in Libra with the Aries equinox on Wednesday.) With almost two weeks left of Mercury retrograde in Pisces, keep reminding yourself to double-check the details and take things slowly. When and if something does go wrong, where’s the deeper lesson in it?

Making Your Moves: Leo Full Moon and Eclipse

By Amanda Painter

We’re entering the home stretch of the current eclipse season: on Monday, Jan. 21 (Jan. 20 in some time zones), we’ll get the Leo Full Moon and a total lunar eclipse. This occurs one day after the Sun enters Aquarius — which happens at 3:59 am EST (8:59:25 UTC) on Jan. 20.

So there will be a shift in tone accompanying this event — fitting enough, given the way modern astrology views eclipses as times for releasing what has run its course and for moving into a new pattern or toward a new phase of development.

This is also the last eclipse on the Leo-Aquarius axis for the time being. In whatever way it relates to the eclipses of this past summer for you, there may be a sense of closing a chapter or springboarding into new territory.
