The War Goes On

Dear Friend and Reader:

I caught the rerun of Pres. Obama’s Wednesday night speech on MSNBC at about 3 am Thursday. By then it was already the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 incident, and I was watching the announcement of a new phase of a war — the perfect commemoration.

Planet Waves
Pres. Obama announces a new phase of war on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014. This was on the eve of the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks — timing that seems well planned for emotional impact.

Part of my consciousness was still in the dreamtime as I watched. I observed as Pres. Obama began as he usually does, calm and measured, and I followed his logic thinking he was being pretty convincing, at least for the first couple of minutes.

Even when I am observing something I think I might not like, I try to keep my mind open and suspend judgment. So I gave him a chance to persuade me.

Then as his speech proceeded, I noticed that something seemed to unravel. Though he spoke for only 13 minutes, he seemed to go on without end. Imagine the feeling of crossing a bridge, but as you cross, the bridge stretches out farther and farther ahead — that is how it felt.

I listened as he offered endless rationalizations for why he was leading the United States into another war with an amorphous terrorist threat allegedly developing more than 10,000 kilometers away. He did not mention that only two Americans have so far been killed by this new enemy.

The topic was outlining his strategy about something called ISIL, ISIS or the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, described as a morph of a terrorist organization and a vast bureaucracy (stretching across the Iraq-Syria border, and potentially as far south as Greece depending on who you believe). The Islamic State, sometimes called a caliphate, allegedly spans from a ‘national’ level down to various local authorities.

“Our objective is clear: we will degrade, and ultimately destroy, ISIL through a comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism strategy,” Pres. Obama said. He compared them to cancer cells and vowed to get every last person involved.

ISIL terrorists/bureaucrats are reputed for their professionally videotaped beheadings, crucifixions and various attacks on local populations. We keep being told they are outfitted with large amounts of American equipment that was left behind after troops were withdrawn from Iraq, giving them something in common with the Ferguson, Missouri, police department — lots of Army surplus gear.

Planet Waves
Images of alleged ISIL or ISIS warriors are frightening to children and other Americans, especially if we’re told they will soon be here. Most Americans seem to support fighting them. Photo via Iran View website.

Obama went on. “Moreover, I have made it clear that we will hunt down terrorists who threaten our country, wherever they are. That means I will not hesitate to take action against ISIL in Syria, as well as Iraq. This is a core principle of my presidency: if you threaten America, you will find no safe haven.”

Gradually the scene started to feel, and appear, surreal. I kept looking into Obama’s face on my television and the presidential facade become transparent. His voice became thin and unconvincing. He seemed meeker and smaller than an ordinary man. He looked like someone, not really the president but vaguely resembling him, put in front of the audience as a spokesman for something or someone else. Then suddenly I could barely recognize him.

When he ended with, “God bless our troops, and God bless America,” I felt like I flashed back to seeing George W. Bush and they morphed into the same person.

That he announced this new military effort on the eve of the anniversary makes it difficult to miss the irony, or the synchronicity, or the reminder, or the careful planning, associated with the 9/11 anniversary — the same incident that in 2003 was falsely used to start another phase of the endless war with or in Iraq. Only now the United States will also be fighting in Syria, which has been a bloody mess since Arab Spring.

New York Times writer Peter Baker put it eloquently when he said Thursday, “After years of trying to avoid entangling the United States in another ‘dumb war’, as he called the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Mr. Obama is now plunging the United States into the middle of one of the world’s bloodiest, most vicious and fratricidal conflicts,” by which he means Syria.

Remember Dubya?

In the morning, I flipped on the TV again to check out coverage of the 9/11 anniversary and early on was greeted by pomp and pageantry. MSNBC has a tradition of rerunning its original coverage from that day, which always surprises me when they do that. It surprises me because that old footage reveals so much.

Last year I watched astonished as NBC news reporter Pat Dawson described explosions in the World Trade Center right before the towers collapsed. Albert Turi, chief safety officer for the New York City Fire Department, heard these explosions and proposed that morning that there were explosives planted in the towers.

Today on the original footage replay I heard NBC’s chief Pentagon correspondent Jim Miklaszewski describe an explosion, not an airplane crash, into the building where his office was located. He described the acrid, pungent smell that soaked the air, which he compared to the strange smell you get when a flourescent light ballast burns out. Others had described a smell similar to the explosive cordite.

The reason these contemperaneous reports are signficiant is that they contain forgotten information that is today considered the stuff of conspiracy theories. It is accepted dogma that there was a plane crash at the Pentagon despite the obvious lack of wreckage or any damage reminiscent of such a crash.

In late 2002, NPR reporter Steve Inskeep personally told me he was called to the scene of an explosion at the Pentagon and saw no evidence of an airplane crash when he arrived about 10 minutes after it happened, with the Pentagon facade still standing intact.

It’s considered absurd by most people that explosives were used to bring down the towers, or that the plane crash at the Pentagon was staged — or not an airplane but a missile. Yet for clues, all you have to do is go back and listen to what was being reported before the spin machine took control and the name Osama bin Laden was floated as the perpetrator.

I have covered the problems with the official version of the 9/11 attacks many times. You can read about this in Were It So, The Gingerbread House, History, Turning on a Phrase, and Not Just a River in Belgium.

Between these four articles you will get a sense of the problems with the official version of events. If you have not consciously gone there before, it’s not easy to wrap your head around. In the article Not Just a River in Belgium I transcribe interviews with several psychologists who particpated in an excellent documentary prepared by Architects and Engineeers for 9/11 Truth, produced by people who design and build skyscrapers. You can watch a shortened version of their documentary Explosive Evidence here.

Do a little research and you can see Larry Silverstein, the owner of World Trade 7, admit on a PBS special that the building was intentionally demolished. I have saved two DVD copies of this documentary purchased directly from PBS.

You can hear New York City firefighters who were there at the time describe molten steel in the wreckage of the Twin Towers. In an ordinary jet crash there is nothing hot enough to melt steel, much less make it flow like lava.

It’s easy to find a plan prepared by a bunch of future Bush administration people who predict “some catastrophic and catalyzing event, like a new Pearl Harbor” early in the 21st century, which will lead to a multi-front war. But as one friend who prefers the official version of events wrote to me, “I am not sure of the relevance unless you are insinuating the possibility of either inside info or complicity, both of which are so preposterous as to be beyond laughable.”

Planet Waves
For about half an hour on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, the Pentagon showed only fire damage, and a hole through several layers of the building’s ring structure. You can see no evidence of an airplane crash, and no wreckage from a jet liner. Then the facade collapsed.

I have listened to what plenty of 9/11 truth advocates have to say. Perhaps the most interesting thing any of them have done is to interview psychologists to help us understand why people have this kind of reaction.

In the documentary Explosive Evidence, you get to see a lot of scientific evidence as to why steel-framed skyscrapers don’t just fall down at near-freefall speed even if they are badly damaged.

Then they let us hear from people who can help explain why people are so resistant to these ideas. I will quote from my transcript of the film, previously quoted in Not Just a River in Belgium. You can hear the audio from this section of the film in this edition of Planet Waves FM.

Robert Hopper, another clinical psychologist, added: “Many people respond to these truths in a very deep way. Some have a visceral reaction like they’ve been punched in the stomach. To begin to accept the possibility that the government was involved, it’s like opening Pandora’s box. If you open the lid and peek in a little bit, it’s going to challenge some of your fundamental beliefs about the world.”

Dorothy Lorig, a counseling psychologist, put it this way. “If we can think of our world view as being sort of our mental and emotional home, I think all of us will do just about anything to defend our homes, to defend our families. So I see that with people, and I saw that with myself when my brother tried to talk with me about it. Don’t mess with me, don’t mess with my home, don’t mess with my comfort with how things are.

“About a week later, I read a lengthy article by Prof. [David Ray] Griffin about why he believes the official account of 9/11 cannot be true. It was a very well-researched article. It was in my office at the time, I sat there and I felt my stomach churning. I thought maybe I was going to be sick. And I leaped out of my chair and ran out the door and took a long walk around the block, around several blocks, and just broke down.”

Lorig continued, “I understand now that what was happening was my world view about my government being in some way my protector, almost like a parent, had been dashed, and it was like being cast out into the wilderness. I think it’s the closest way to describe that feeling. And I sobbed and I sobbed, felt the ground had completely disappeared beneath my feet, and I knew at some point during the walk that I knew that I was going to have to become active in educating other people about this. That for me to retain any sense of integrity I was going to have to take some action. I couldn’t just let something like this go.”

She gets both sides of the problem — accepting any of these ideas changes your world view and compels you to take action. You cannot just let it go. You cannot see the world the same way after you start to consider the evidence of what may have happened. This is the whole point.

There’s also something about whether you trust your intelligence or trust authority, even if what you’re told makes no sense. You don’t need to be an expert to see the problems with the official story, you just need to look. As I have written before, this is not about accepting a conspiracy theory. It’s about debunking one.

Planet Waves

If you are curious about what the astrology says about this, here is a clear, short and simple article I wrote some years ago that explains the chart for the 9/11 incident.

You may wonder why it’s necessary to consider any of this. I think it’s as simple as making a sincere effort at understanding the truth, and not being obedient to what we are ordered by authority to believe, especially at the point of a gun. Remember that the 9/11 attacks have been used to justify vast rollbacks of our precious American freedom, including implementing the surveillance state that for years has been tracking our every thought.

I don’t think it was a coincidence that news of the Next War was dropped on us on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary. From a public relations standpoint, it was perfect timing, and it fit the same pattern of using the pain of this blight on our lives and on American history to falsely justify yet more murder and death, conducted in your name, supposedly to protect you from something that has never actually threatened you. And something that was created by the last war commenced under the same pretext.

We may not have the power to do anything about this, though we certainly have the power to choose what to accept into our minds. Spiritual growth involves the cultivation of discernment, mature thinking and developing a tropism for the truth. If the concept ‘freedom’ has any meaning at all, I would say that it begins here.

Fire on Fire: Mars ingresses Sagittarius

Mars enters Sagittarius Saturday at 5:57 pm EDT, after about a month and a half in Scorpio. Sagittarius is a fire sign — and Mars is a fiery energy. If Mars in Scorpio was the slow burn, or the sense of dropping deep into the erotic magma at your core, Mars in Sagittarius is about fanning that heat out into the world.

Planet Waves
Smoke tornadoes as ‘the man’ burns at Burning Man 2012. Where will your adventure lead you? Photo by Amanda Painter.

It’s about letting something ignite within you that can translate your more idealistic desires and sense of soul-purpose into some tangible adventure. You’re being invited to go beyond your known borders in a bold and adventurous way — whatever that boils down to for you.

But the realization of a sense of purpose in life can feel terrifying. Because once you own that, you begin to run out of excuses for not getting down to business living it. What if the sky’s message is that the current adventure ahead of you has a clear purpose and as much assurance of success as is possible? Will you choose your direction, go forward, and keep going forward? Do you trust what you want?

Note that as soon as Mars enters Sagittarius it will be closing in on a square to Neptune in Pisces.

Mars square Neptune is partly a caution to be honest with yourself and wary of self-delusion in your motives — that is, to be wary of ‘wants’ that are really just distractions. It’s also a reminder to keep careful tabs on your alcohol and drug use. On a more metaphysical level, Mars-Neptune is a good reason to keep your energetic/psychic boundaries strong and to stay in clear psychic integrity.

But Mars square Neptune has incredible creative potential, too. And in a sense, creativity is delusional. That’s the whole idea. It’s not supposed to make perfect sense or be practical. Any relationship into which you channel your creative fire, regardless of its label (work, love, play, etc.), is about to get a real lift.

As it does, you may very well find your voice in a way that is close to your heart. Not in the pages of your journal or the confines of your imagination, but out there — in your community.

The Path Towards a New Beginning

By Amanda Painter

As Mars enters Sagittarius this weekend, prodding us toward adventure in the wider world and perhaps the more lofty philosophical or spiritual pursuits that sign can represent, check out the work of Missouri rapper Prince Ea.

Ea came to my attention this week by way of his video of what no one wants to say about Ferguson, which has gone viral on Facebook. From there, I found his spoken-word piece “Why I Think This World Should End.” Don’t get hung up on the unlikely title; Ea’s message is love of the universal variety — the kind we only recognize when we shift our gaze away from external differences and look deep within ourselves.

As he says in his video:

Robert Kennedy once said that
Few will have the greatness to bend history
But each of us can work to change a small portion of events
And in the total of all those acts
Will be written the history of a generation
So yes, the world is coming to an end
And the path towards a new beginning starts within you

Planet Waves

Weekly Horoscope for Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, #1015 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You’re being invited to go beyond your known borders in a bold and adventurous way. You seem to have had more than enough with being confined in a partnership or contractual situation, and you’re figuring out that you have much broader horizons than you’ve acknowledged any time recently. You are under no obligation to live the way you lived in the past, following rules that you followed in the past. Yet rather than throw anything (or everything) to the four winds, I suggest you at least state your position clearly to whom it may concern. You do not need permission from anyone else, though you will benefit from the integrity that comes from speaking your truth and not leaving anyone guessing, blaming themselves or blaming you. Of course you cannot control that entirely, but you can have a positive influence and keep your karma positive.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — What matters is not the form of a relationship but rather the creative fire that it contains. You may have lost sight of that recently, though you are now being reminded of what is so often neglected. This takes more devotion than most mortals are willing to invest into their journeys with others, and consistency that is rare to find. Yet I suggest you remember that ultimately this is not about a relationship; it’s about you, your integrity and your commitment to life. Unusual, unexpected things happen when you take the chance of asserting your soul, though it’s best not to expect them but rather allow your clarity of purpose to be its own reward. Keep your focus and remember to stay true to yourself first, and to what you want, second. From this space, when passion takes hold, it does so in a much more reliable way.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Next to self-esteem, I think that trust is the most pressing issue facing Western society. Indeed, this may be a global issue, though I think of it more as a problem of those who have the option not to trust and still make it through the day, which is our story here in the lavishly wealthy part of the world. One thing people tend not to trust is when someone desires them, or makes a direct approach of some kind. If that happens over the next few days, will you meet the person face to face, or will you bob and weave, and avoid the encounter? Remember, you are required neither to make nor accept any promises. You only need to trust enough to learn more. I suggest you go through a few layers of experience rather than allowing yourself to be turned off at the first meager question or appearance that does not fit your idea of who someone is supposed to be. Stay around long enough to find out.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Now is the time to get serious about a health issue, or your overall state of fitness. Move gently through any resistance, which may come in the form of inertia — or fear. You may experience some confusion early in the process, but that will give way to recognizing the integrity of what you are doing. Remember that there is no physical situation that is not connected to some underlying spiritual and/or emotional state, so know what your real goal is. A similar scenario will hold true for work-related matters. This is the time to motivate yourself to do your very best work. The challenges you meet will be more than compensated by a boost to your self-esteem every time you get a job done well. So don’t waste any time doubting. Be confident in your talents and trust your motivation. Meet any doubt with a positive attitude and sense of adventure, and be eager to see what is around every corner.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Creativity is delusional. That’s the whole idea. It’s not supposed to make perfect sense or be practical. It’s a kind of impassioned fantasy, or journey begun with an unknown destination. One vital element of creative exploration is that you allow it to be pointless, seemingly for its own sake, or for a diversion. Then refinement comes later; that requires a different kind of discipline, a shift in viewpoint and ongoing review. Yet that is not the heart of the matter, the thing with no substitute. The core is allowing yourself that space of freedom from some worldly intention other than to allow your ideas to flow. It’s true that some artists and musicians get lost in this aspect of the work, and never get to the refinement stage. For now, don’t worry about that. Other aspects suggest you will focus that level of activity, and that you will be able to connect this to your vocational or business plan.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You must be cautious of the self-critical qualities of Virgo for the next few days, lest they undo something that could work out brilliantly for you. If you find you’re taking yourself apart in any way that feels unpleasant or like it’s the return of an old habit, pause and shift the narrative. The problem with self-criticism is that you can pawn it off on yourself as some form of improvement. However, that is rarely true, and when it is true, it will last for about five minutes maximum before you take constructive action or engage in a healing process. But there is something suspect about any self-judgment that comes up for you now, especially if it arrives in the form of needing to be more spiritual, or needing to focus more. The real themes of your chart are keeping an open mind and encouraging forgiveness, of yourself and of others. This is a fine line to walk — keep your eyes and ears open.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Don’t get too caught up in plans and strategizing — plenty more useful information is about to emerge, timed approximately with the Sun’s arrival in your sign in just over one week, followed by a magnificent New Moon. You may, however, be obsessed with one particular plan that seems like exactly the right thing to do, and it may be. I suggest, in that case, that you make a generous list of everything you don’t know and keep all of that in mind. As long as you know you don’t know, you will be on solid ground. Remember that idea: the key to knowing is to know when you don’t know, and to the best extent you can, to know what information you are missing. Then be patient, and pay attention to what comes your way. Once you structure your learning process, you magnify its power, and make more efficient use of the information that comes to you.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — I’m here today to remind you of something the magnificent Lois Rodden, one of the great astrologers of our lifetime, once said to me. Mercury, she said, is often considered the money planet (mainly since it’s associated with merchants and commerce), but for money, the planet you really want on your side is Mars. The reason for that is because making money requires motivation and focused intention. Mars is about to ingress Sagittarius, your house of available resources (the 2nd house), and that will provide just those elements. Yet there is one caveat — that your mode of creating resources be connected to your soul-level mission, or what most people would think of as your true values. I’ll say this another way. You’re about to get a serious boost in your money-creating power and for it to work well for you and for everyone else, focus that energy on doing the right thing. You know what it is.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Mars ingressing your sign on Saturday will, at least, demonstrate that your worst fears were not true. At best, you will focus your goals with new commitment and determination. While Sagittarius is associated with many things, remember that its deeper meaning is the one-pointed determination to follow your highest calling and to get the job done. Sagittarius at its best brooks no distraction, no competition, no compromises. Mars, which itself carries the symbol of focused determination — the same arrow that appears in the Sagittarius glyph — emboldens that whole program of getting the job done. On the physical plane and especially on our planet, you need this kind of strength and focus to cut through the nearly limitless bullshit that is flying around, and to avoid the many diversions that prevent most progress. You certainly have an adventure ahead — though one with a clear purpose and as much assurance of success as is possible. Choose your direction. Go forward, and keep going forward.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — People respect you in a way that you may not fully understand. Yet you may be receiving the message that you must set an example for others. Remember that such an example does not imply that you must be pure, or practice chastity, or deny that you have feelings and attachments. I suggest you focus the experience of your full humanity into what you offer the world, and draw strength from having no fear of controversy whatsoever. It is true that at this time in your life, you are creating an ever-greater impact on the world around you, and part of how you’re doing that is through focusing your sincerity. This is not an option. It’s not a frill. It’s an evolutionary imperative, and at its core is your ability to be real with yourself at all times. So accept no excuses, and grant yourself no casual exceptions. Progress is at stake –- of a rare kind, available in this moment.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You seem to be finding your voice, in a way that is close to your heart — in your community. There are many ways to define community these days; this would seem to be the one that you consider your spiritual home, or your primary tribe. You have been unusually reserved, cautious or conservative in recent times of your life, and you are now being invited to step into a far more visible role, standing up for some cause, commitment or mission that you may have been reluctant to speak about in the past. You may feel vulnerable doing this, though I assure you that you are standing on a deep foundation, and that unlike most people, your leadership is grounded on the strength of your moral authority. I don’t say this lightly and I suggest you not take it lightly — and not let that stop you from going past your previous limits and taking a genuine risk for what is truly a worthwhile cause.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — I have never seen the word “achievement” in any textbook description of Pisces, which demonstrates why we need better sources than those books. Yet this quality — of aspiration, motivation, determination — is written all over the charts of Pisces because you have Sagittarius in your 10th house of reputation, profession and authority. Mars is about to cross the cusp of that house, and that is putting you in the mood to accomplish great things. This you will do, if you remember your highest goals and put integrity above appearance. Take no shortcuts to success, and make sure that you’re available and accountable for your decisions. There’s an element of this that may conflict with your image as a sensitive, empathic person. In truth there is no conflict between these elements of who you are, but just in case, the solution is to focus on the quality of your work, never compromising, and making sure you push the opportunity to have that work seen by as many people as possible.

Belief, Hope, Faith: Full Moon Conjunct Chiron-Borasisi

Dear Friend and Reader:

Monday’s Full Moon in Pisces is one of those gems of astrology, as beautiful for its celestial poetry as for its significance as a moment of spiritual opening.

In honor of this event, I’ll be hosting a live, call-in edition of Planet Waves FM beginning at 8 pm EDT on Monday, Sept. 8. The exact Full Moon aspect will happen during the program. Consider this a Full Moon ritual and celebration for the Planet Waves community. Everyone is invited — you may read the sign-up details here.

Planet Waves
Full Moon rises over the Acropolis
in Athens, October 2011. The large structure, under renovation, is the Parthenon (completed 438 BCE), which was in ancient times not a temple but rather seems to have been a storehouse for treasures. Photo by Anthony Ayiomamitis.

The Pisces Full Moon is sublime, carrying an inherent mysticism that even atheists and skeptics will feel. The Moon loves Pisces, and the Sun’s presence in Virgo fully activates the personal integration process that I described in last week’s edition.

The Full Moon will be conjunct both Chiron and Borasisi in Pisces, which are in a slowly-developing conjunction of their own (that rare event, which happened last in 1949, is exact in 2015 and 2016 but it’s very close now). Chiron is a centaur object with an orbit just over 50 years. Borasisi is an object in a region just beyond Pluto, with an orbit of 292 years. Discovered in 1999, Borasisi is an early discovery in the Kuiper Belt. It was named for a deity in the Kurt Vonnegut novel Cat’s Cradle, which is largely a commentary on the lack of ethics in science.

A Moon-Sun event illuminates whatever it touches, and in this case it’s making contact with an aspect that carries a theme of healing our capacity for faith. Chiron in Pisces would be enough to suggest this theme, though with Borasisi we add the specific theme of what we believe and why. (I wrote a detailed article about Borasisi in March 2011.)

What do we hold as truth, and on what basis? Why do people so often believe what is not true, and disbelieve what is true? What is the difference between belief, hope and faith?

These are deep questions, and they will filter through consciousness intuitively as this Full Moon peaks. You might consider any topic with these ideas as your background against which to ponder them.

One of the crisis points of humanity, now and many times in the past, involves the issues of belief, hope and faith. Where a person puts their faith, they offer their power. If you put it in science, you give your power to science. If you put it in money, you give your power to money. If you trust your own inner creative source, your own connection to the All There Is, you invest your power there. This Full Moon is saying notice where you make your investment.

With Chiron so involved, there is an invitation to be open to your faith in yourself, in particular your faith in your ability to heal yourself. Chiron is also a reminder that this whole topic is one of the deepest injuries to which humanity has been subjected, often by interests who profit from the absence of (or conscious destruction of) organic, intuitive faith — and there are many.

Planet Waves

Regarding the psychic climate of this Full Moon, expect plenty of energy coming through. Somewhat like a homeopathic remedy, the Pisces Full Moon seems to have its roots on the subtle planes, which will then broadcast through to the temporal plane. This may be a pleasant rush of information, or the sensation of being overwhelmed in a way that you cannot really describe.

Full Moons always come with a cresting of energy, though Moon-Chiron has a bristling quality, a palpable sensation. People with this aspect in their natal charts possess an intensity that is difficult to describe, which others often feel as a charismatic quality when the person walks into the room.

Another feature of this Full Moon is an exact trine to Juno in Cancer. This wonderfully complex, sometimes annoying, always meaningful asteroid describes values about marriage and marriage-like relationships. Its underlying quality is the need to express one’s needs, feelings and expectations before they turn into resentment.
The flow of energy opened by the Moon-Juno trine will make this easier.

The Full Moon and Juno are trine Saturn in Scorpio. Be aware that emotional patterns are likely to clone themselves and reproduce, so make conscious choices about how you feel and how you respond to your feelings and those of others.

On the Virgo Sun’s side of the Full Moon, there is a conjunction of the Sun with asteroids Photographica, Child and Toro. I am not sure what to make of this conjunction (and I don’t want to speculate). I will say that Photographica, often literally involved with photographic imagery, adds to the questions above with what do you believe, when you see it in a photograph?

I would add one other bit — photos can play a profound role in the healing process. I have covered that in a Planet Waves article available in the archives. You may have a productive experience looking at childhood photos of yourself this weekend, and asking yourself where that little kid went. He or she is still right inside you; this is an invitation to make contact.

Planet Waves
Chart for the Pisces Full Moon. The Moon is located
in the top left side of the chart, looking like a gray crescent. It’s exactly opposite the Sun, a yellow circle. Chiron is next to the Moon, as is Borasisi.

There are two other features of the current sky worth mentioning. One is that we are currently under a grand fire trine. The trine consists of an Aries cluster (Uranus, South Node, Eris), Jupiter in Leo, and a Sagittarius cluster, the main feature consisting of
many newer discoveries, including centaur Pholus.

This is an opportunity for accessing sustained fiery energy, something that is rare to find. The thing to watch out for, given all the factors involved (especially Pholus and Uranus), is that energy running out of control. Fire is useful only when it’s contained and directed, otherwise it becomes destructive. This grand trine is illustrating the out-of-control militancy that we are seeing in some parts of the world, and it’s worth asking what, if anything, can bring it under control.

Finally, Mercury and Venus changed (or will change) signs this week. Mercury ingressed Libra on Sept. 2 and Venus will ingress Virgo tomorrow (Sept. 5). Both of these sign changes add the potential for a thoughtful, analytical quality to what is otherwise a somewhat volatile sky.

Note that Mercury and Venus occupy one another’s signs of rulership. Mercury is associated with Virgo and Venus with Libra — their current placements are what is called mutual reception.

Here’s how I translate that. If your thinking seems caught in a pattern that does not allow you to draw conclusions or even useful inferences, try reversing your logic. Switch positions, consider the situation from someone else’s point of view, or think your steps through in reverse.

Where Venus and Libra are involved, consider how you’re being influenced by appearances.

Where Mercury and Virgo are involved, consider whether you’re overemphasizing the details, or overlooking them.

One key here is to think actively rather than passively. Humans have a tendency to want someone else to do the work of thinking for them. As much as we may say we don’t want to be told what to do, we love to be told what to do because it seems to alleviate the burden of thought.

Mercury and Venus are saying: think for yourself. Perceive your reality your own way, and make your choices based on what you observe, what you learn and what you know.

I am looking forward to hearing your experiences of this astrology in Monday’s live call-in edition of Planet Waves FM (check this link to sign up). Also of note, many readers sent in their ideas about Virgo as a point of integration, some of which I read on the air in the current edition of Planet Waves FM. There is more information about the Full Moon in this edition, as well as my description of (and some advocacy for) homeopathic medicine.

The Planet Waves horoscope below is based on a reading of the Full Moon chart for the 12 signs and rising signs.

As Eric suggests above about thinking for ourselves, the fictionalized Chomsky says of Hobbits: “One would think that they could, easily enough, find out about all of the things that happen in the world.”

Mercury in Libra Weighs the Unseen Side of LOTR

By Amanda Painter

With Mercury newly in Libra, relationship communication, diplomacy and a desire for balance or justice is likely at the forefront of your consciousness. And as you know, there are at least two ways to look at any given situation — usually several.

Taking this to the extreme, a pair of writers on the McSweeny’s website named Jeff Alexander and Tom Bissell have imagined a dialogue between linguist and social theorist Noam Chomsky and the late radical historian Howard Zinn, in which the two scholars provide unused DVD audio commentary for J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The result, as you might imagine, turns the socio-political dynamics of the narrative — and traditional audience/reader understanding of its meaning — on its head.

Below is a short excerpt specially chosen for Mercury in Libra.

Chomsky: It’s just so complicated, the webs of relationships.

Zinn: Now Frodo, son of Drogo, agrees to take the ring to Mount Doom. Something tells me that no one in Mordor calls it Mount Doom.

Chomsky: And everyone baits Frodo into this. “You are our agent, going on a suicide mission. You have to do it for the Motherland.”

Zinn: So is Frodo the Mohammed Atta figure in this story?

Chomsky: He’s a fanatical true believer. And crazy. Obviously, totally insane.

Zinn: And listen to what Aragorn tells Frodo: “You have my sword.”

Chomsky: So militaristic.

Zinn: Notice that no one says, “You have my diplomatic skills.” I think the only real diplomat of Middle Earth is Gollum. He’s the only one who makes any meaningful, cross-cultural exchange with any of these people. Being a torture victim at the hand of the Orcs, and his attempted strangulation of the Hobbits.

Chomsky: I think of Gollum as more of a deluded madman, one more sinned against than sinned.

Zinn: There’s room for argument.

Of Virgo and Pisces — and the Pisces Full Moon

In this week’s edition of Planet Waves FM, I look closely at the relationship between Virgo and Pisces, focused on the Pisces Full Moon that happens on Sept. 8. This includes a discussion of how the Full Moon is conjunct both Chiron and Borasisi. In the second half of the program, I read your commentaries about Virgo as a point of integration. These are some brilliant ideas from Planet Waves subscribers who have apparently been contemplating the Virgo question for a while. My musical guest is Sheila Chandra.

Planet Waves

Weekly Horoscope for Thursday, Sept. 4, #1014 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You need an outlet for all this energy. It has to be something that matches your imagination, and this in turn is likely to be a bit much for the people you’ve been associating with lately. It looks like most of the people around you are running about 15 degrees cooler than you are. Said another way, you may not find many others who are willing to take the creative or social risks you want to take, so I suggest you not let anyone hold you back, or persuade you that you’re being a little too wild. You may be, for their tastes, but not for what your soul is calling you to express or explore. You may need a little self-coaxing to openly admit what you want, and a bit more to act on it — though I suggest you move with the current momentum of your imagination, while that momentum is carrying you.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Marriage is not the solution to everything. If there is such a solution, that would be trust, and it seems obvious that trust is what people are seeking when they invest themselves in relationships that are designed to be ‘permanent’. Yet it’s easy not to trust, and to give oneself reasons not to trust, even in the seemingly most secure situation. Where do you stand on this subject? One way to measure that is by considering carefully what you say and what you don’t say to the people you consider your intimates. You seem to be of two minds about this — sometimes willing to be totally transparent and at others feeling like this is inconvenient, or an unnecessary risk. You don’t need to overanalyze this. If you have something on your mind, say so, and if you have a question, ask directly. In fact, make a wish.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — The forthcoming Full Moon streaks across the sky in the angle of your chart involved with achievement and reputation. It’s a direct invitation to be bold about who you are and what you do, and to keep those two things as aligned as you can. I suggest you eliminate the concept of ‘career’ from your vocabulary and instead replace it with the concept of your vocation. A vocation is a calling, and there has rarely been a time when a calling was summoning you more boldly. Are you listening? Can you hear it? Can you see the signs leading you to the place you want to be? Or are you afraid that what you want to do is too good to be true, or too adventurous to be possible? Perhaps it might be for most people on most days, but not for you, at this time in your life.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — There’s just one thing left to do, and that is to have faith in yourself, in your dreams and in your potential. Well, there’s just one other thing to do, which is to take action while you are feeling inspired and bold. It’s way too easy to wait for the wave of confidence to pass. It’s also way too easy to allow yourself to be motivated by frustration, which has its place, though as you’ve seen over the past few months, there are much more preferable ways to get yourself going. Next week’s Full Moon in your fellow water sign Pisces is inviting you to dream big. This means not allowing yourself to be limited by what you considered out of reach in the past. Consider what you would do if you didn’t believe in any limits at all, and then move precisely in that direction.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Go beyond secrecy and taboo in any form. The more secrets you let out of the bag, the more fun you will have. There are two reasons for this. One is that keeping information to yourself is like wearing a brick around your neck. The other reason is that all of the really enticing stuff we have to share is usually kept behind the veil of secrecy, where it doesn’t get a chance to flourish. The Pisces Full Moon takes place in one of the most intimate angles of your chart. You will get a chance to see that intimacy means openness and transparency. To get the benefits of this event, it would be helpful to lean into the side of revealing more rather than revealing less. If you find yourself revealing one fact or feeling, that is the one to reveal. You will feel better, and unplug those places where your energy has been getting blocked.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Imagine a world with no concept of ‘other’ or of opposition, a world where you are in harmony with everyone and everything around you. This may be difficult to conjure up on a planet where just about everyone and everything seems to be in some state of competition or conflict with something else, though I invite you to use your imagination. How might that feel? Now consider the possibility that each day that you live is a step that you take on the way to getting to that place of integration. In truth such a state of existence begins within your mind, not as something you impose on yourself but rather as something you observe about yourself. What’s beautiful about the next few days is an opening through which a rather unusual light shines, and you get to see yourself reflected in it.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Pleasure, imagination, curiosity — these are some of the most potent healing tools available to us. Yet to be effective there needs to be some soul presence, or a conscious idea of seeking self-knowledge. I am not talking about entertainment. For many people the opening into the healing dimension may as well be a sealed door expertly polished into marble to make it seem like it’s not there. However, it is most certainly there, and you already have confirmation that such a dimension exists and that you can indeed access it, even if you cannot predict when. Right now the astrology is aligning in a way that makes this dimension closer than ever, and that increases your ability to feel your way to it. Just remember that you know you’re responding to something that is real, and to which you have direct access, if you need it.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Monday’s Pisces Full Moon happens in what you might think of as the pleasure center of your solar chart — the 5th house. Most of what passes for pleasure in Western society is really an effort to avoid pain. There are several ways you can tell the real thing from the counterfeit version. One is the presence of curiosity about yourself, and it’s an intensely pleasurable curiosity. It’s the kind of feeling good that goes deeper into previously unknown, or forgotten, regions of who you are. Another is the desire for freedom. That can translate to craving the unknown, which is a specific kind of liberty. This will teach you something about pleasure anxiety, which is really a form of self-control rooted in a ‘need’ for what is absolutely familiar. Take an extended moment and allow your existence to be a mystery and an adventure. You are being invited into an unusually deep inner space.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Creativity must have an emotional source. It can feed you intellectually, and feed your quest, but the drive to create is body-level, akin to the need to breathe, or your response to pain. Actually those are fitting metaphors for the creative process, as it does involve an in-breath and out-breath of experience, and some of the world’s greatest creative works have served artists, musicians and writers as a way to process loss. For you, creativity helps you build your inner home. When you tap your gifts, you create a space of safety for yourself, and you can then move into that space and live more confidently. You might think of that as a kind of healing cave, from which emerge many resources and jewels you can share with those you love and care about.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — These years of your life have been some of the most driven and urgent ever, arriving with one enforced change after the next. Yet there is another way to evolve, which is to relax into what is possible. You don’t need to resist yourself, and you certainly don’t need to dwell on your worst fears. You can find that space inside yourself where you have no concerns at all about whether you’re accepted by others, or have a place in society, and when you get there, you may feel like you’re taking a warm bath for the first time. There is a way of being where you can, at least for a while, step out of any judgment, which is more likely to feel like stepping into self-embrace. If you feel a tinge of guilt, don’t fight it; keep going; you are headed in the right direction. It will rinse off of your skin like soap.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — What is it that makes you human? I would propose that it’s a self-reflective quality — the awareness of your own awareness, which leads to consciousness of your own existence. Because everyone has a unique emotional makeup, that consciousness might emphasize pain, or pleasure, or love, or anger, or desire, or the desire to create. Humanity is the capacity to be aware of such a feeling and to respond to it. As the Pisces Full Moon lights up the dimension of your horoscope associated with your inner resources, and the feelings you have for yourself, I suggest you let the awareness of any emotion, thought or desire remind you of the fact that you exist. After awareness, the next stage of evolution is the ability to respond to what you feel, and to consciously create a desired state of experience. You are closer to that self-creative state than you’ve ever been.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Speaking of human, what is it that makes you a Pisces? What is the confirmation of your inner knowledge that you were born at the right time? Is it your love of nature, of sex, of music, of sensory experience in any form? Is it your unquenchable longing for cosmic connection, to yourself and to other people? Is it the love of sacred plants? Whatever it may be, this weekend (and Monday) is the time to go fully into that experience, with no expectations — give yourself the gift of a full-on experiment and see where that takes you. With the Moon conjunct Chiron and with Neptune right in the neighborhood, that could well be anywhere — or anywhere you want. For reference, the Moon ingresses Pisces Sunday at 7:47 pm EDT (23:47 UTC) and reaches full phase Monday at 9:38 pm EDT (Tuesday at 1:38 UTC). See you there!

The Integration Point

Dear Friend and Reader:

Virgo may be the most interesting sign. It’s certainly one of the most complex, laced with inconsistencies that only start to make sense over time. Yet I would also make the daring statement that at this time in history, Virgo and what it represents may be the most relevant sign — to notice, and to learn from.

Planet Waves

It may be the sign that represents what we are going through at this stage of human and planetary evolution.

In last year’s introduction to Virgo, Threefold Goddess in a Field of Grain, I referenced Alice Bailey’s chapter on Virgo in her 1951 text Esoteric Astrology. She describes Virgo as the place in the womb of the goddess that gestates the highest human potential.

“The sign Virgo is one of the most significant in the zodiac,” Bailey wrote in her introduction to this sign, “for its symbology concerns the whole goal of the evolutionary process, which is to shield, nurture and finally reveal the hidden spiritual reality. This every form veils, but the human form is equipped and fitted to manifest it in a manner different to any other expression of divinity and so make tangible and objective that for which the whole creative process was intended.”

An idea becomes real; a potential manifests. The germ of life inside the seed of grain is protected, and when the conditions are right, it emerges and grows. That is the essence of Virgo, where we see so much in the way of intellectual expression yearning for a place to take form. To do this, it’s necessary to honor the life within what we’re doing, and the deeper life within ourselves. This takes patience and care. It requires living in service of that inner light, until it’s fully born.

Even in the most ordinary themes of Virgo we see these qualities expressed — for example, the undeniable emphasis on service that Virgo so often presents. When a person with strong Virgo in their chart is in conflict or crisis, it would be a good idea to check for the extent to which they are honoring and are in harmony with that inner life. Note: service does not necessarily mean being a nurse or a teacher. It means doing what one came here to do; it means following one’s true calling, which almost invariably serves humanity.

In today’s article I would like to introduce another idea about Virgo, something I’ve been mulling for a while and that is starting to come into focus.

Planet Waves

Virgo is one of the four mutable signs. The first of the four is Gemini, which I described in an article from this past spring called A Glass Bottomed Boat Reveals Undersea Wonders.

Gemini is the seat of dualism in the zodiac. While most of the signs describe dualism to some degree and all of them imply it in some way, Gemini is the first sign where a person shows up, and there are not one but two people. The mutable signs all carry this quality, of reflection, of two sides to the story.

We see this reflected in the many ways that both consciousness and society always seem to bifurcate — to split into two. The two could be female-male; self-other; light-shadow; sinner-saint; higher-lower; rich-poor; paper-plastic; debit-credit; gay-straight; single-married; perpetrator-victim; content-structure; form-function —  and so on, and on.

The story of physical life seems to be an endless study in binary splits, and I believe this is gradually driving us insane. At the least, it sets the scene for a worldview that cannot really make sense of existence.

If Gemini, ruled by Mercury, is the sign where dualism is the most obvious, Virgo may be the mutable sign where it tries to come together as one thing. Mercury is described in classical astrology as a planet with no sex — officially, it’s the only androgynous planet. (Personally, I think that Saturn does a good job being androgynous as well.)

Another Mercury-ruled sign, Virgo has no obvious theme of dualism. It’s there — in various forms of inner tension, conflict, changing positions spontaneously, and a struggle to express male or female energy clearly. If Gemini is the sign of either/or, Virgo is the sign of trying to be neither, and I think therein lies the main clue what this sign is about.

Planet Waves

Think of Virgo as the place where opposites collide and try to fuse into one thing. I recognize that this is a concept sometimes attributed to the next mutable sign Sagittarius, though Virgo is a step on the way to getting there. It’s the place where most of the work of integration actually happens. This is the essential conflict of Virgo — its role is to constantly integrate opposite polarities.

Most of the struggle of both society and of individuals at this time involves the attempt to judge, cast off or attack whatever is perceived as the opposite. The energy field known as Virgo has the impressive work of calling back that projection of otherness and reabsorbing it into the whole. This is a vital expression of the holistic principle, which seems to find its home in Virgo. It is not surprising that Virgo has emerged as the sign associated with holistic healing.

This attribute of Virgo seems to have emerged right around when Chiron was discovered, seen as the patron saint of healers and associated with Virgo.

This is some of the most important growth work that we can be doing in a time of history when dualism is in fact killing us. Ways of thinking that are based on domination or are strictly linear are out of balance, and are driving the world out of balance. Models of business that function exclusively to provide profits at any cost to people and the environment are out of balance. Yet it’s easy to rationalize this away, on the argument that we need energy or that life is not fair.

Notably, all of this begins with thought patterns, which are a primary topic area of Virgo. Everything begins as thought, and then manifests as a physical reality. We are not going to fix the world without healing the patterns of thought that are driving the world into its present state.

You might call that state one of disintegration, which is happening many places you look. It’s also an inner struggle, for people whose life purposes are out of joint with one another — the seemingly separate functions of relationship, work, family, creative outlets and earning money. One dire necessity of a great many people is to get these elements of life working with one another rather than against one another.

Planet Waves
The Mandelbrot Set, the first fractal ever discovered — though the original didn’t look so pretty. Wikimedia Commons.

I know that this seems like an impossible assignment, requiring more thought, energy and intelligence than seems available. Thinking is a skill, it’s hard work, and it seems like it’s ever less popular.

The world is dumbing down constantly, despite all these information superhighways that so often seem to be devoid of anything vaguely meaningful.

Here is where Alice Bailey’s idea about Virgo becomes even more helpful. She views it as the place where the true spiritual core of humanity is gestated and nurtured. She describes this in metaphorical terms as the gestation of the Christ consciousness within Mary. Said another way, this is describing the birth of a germ of consciousness within mother/mater/matter. The Earth is intelligent, she thinks and she supports and gestates the next generation of thought.

The problem of imbalance and of mental chaos is not going to be solved using the same thought patterns that created it. Even if we were to apply logic, ethics and science, we would still be likely to have a problem we could not solve on the same level. There must be something else.

I don’t think we’re going to integrate opposites by putting them into a blender together. Rather, the work of integration must be begun in earnest, however that feels for each person. Then some new thing will emerge, first in consciousness, then in the world. Eventually it will become a collective phenomenon — though that is a whole other step in the process, where we will need to bring Aquarius into the scenario. There is an esoteric — that is, hidden — relationship between Virgo and Aquarius, where what gestates in a hidden way is released into the collective. We may be closer to that point than is obvious to the eye.

I am curious to hear your responses to this theory, and whatever original thoughts it inspires for you. Please write to me at dreams@planetwaves.net.

Lovingly,

Thanks to Janine James for bouncing some of these ideas around with me during an astrology session this week.

Note about Inner Space for September. I did not finish writing it till last night, and it seems silly to distribute two monthly horoscopes in one day. So I will have that for you Tuesday. — Eric Francis

Embrace Your Vision and Be Realistic

The Virgo Sun is currently opposing Neptune in Pisces (exact Aug. 29 at 10:33 am). Neptune aspects are famous for being slippery — the kind of thing that often requires frequent reality checks, and second opinions on schemes that seem too good to be true. But across the Virgo-Pisces axis, it’s possible to work some grounded practicality into any creative process.

Planet Waves
Peace dove over Nubble Pond, Maine; photo by Amanda Painter.

That includes the basic creative process of living.

It’s easy to hear “creativity” and, if you don’t make your living at visual or performing art, think, “Well, that doesn’t apply to me.” We forget just how often we need to tap into something other than the logical, linear parts of our brains to solve problems at work, or to negotiate with a toddler, or to come up with a win-win outcome in a romantic relationship. Heck, even just rearranging the living room asks us to step out of “what is” and step into “what could be.”

That takes creative vision. But what sets creative vision apart from idle daydreams, outsized fantasies and flat-out delusion is the ability to connect our imaginations with the facts of our current reality and the tools at hand.

In the Sun-Neptune equation, Neptune in Pisces is the super-dreamy playground of color, light, sense impressions, mind-altering substances, parallel realities and incense-suffused erotic energy. The Sun in Virgo is the realm of applied science — that is, translating from idea to reality and back; a Virgo Sun at its best is all about the ability to enact a detailed, logical plan, especially if done in the service of a larger goal that benefits others (including healing).

So the primary energy this weekend is about identifying what you desire, the steps needed to get there, and then starting from where you are now.

This is not a wish-upon-a-star / fairy godmother / genie situation. It’s about taking ownership of your vision, your dream, your creative impulse to make something new. Taking ownership means acknowledging how close to (or far from) making it real you actually are. Once you’ve made that measure, you can chart the steps to getting there.

Planet Waves

Things don’t always go according to plan; yet the curve balls that may come your way could actually be beneficial synchronicities. Part of what determines that may be your own ability to be flexible (yet still realistic) with your plan. Luckily, Virgo and Pisces are both mutable signs; the ability to morph when meeting an obstacle is implied.

A couple final notes about Sun opposite Neptune: first, do make sure you present yourself as straightforwardly and honestly as you can from now through next week (and beyond, really). Be clear about your intentions; be wary of anyone who seems anything less, and ask detailed questions until you’re satisfied the conversation, situation or relationship is on solid ground and above-board.

Any attempts on your part to achieve your vision by questionable means will likely backfire, as will any lapses in heeding your intuition about others if you sense a red flag.

Second, the asteroid Ceres in Scorpio is sextile the Sun and trine Neptune. The more your vision and your plan to enact it are mutually nourishing to you and those around you, the more ease you’ll likely encounter in enacting it. That nourishment may very likely come on an emotional or erotic wavelength, though in Scorpio, we could also be looking at the inflow of financial nourishment (money is just another form of energy exchange, after all).

Now go play.

Yours & truly,

Amanda Painter

Treading Between Earth-Bound Reality and the Seas of Chance

By Amanda Painter

Between the Virgo Sun and Neptune in Pisces (which oppose each other Aug. 29 at 10:33 am) lies the meeting place between precision and infinite possibility, between the seeming logic of ego-consciousness and the boundlessness of imagination.

In “A Truncated Story of Infinity,” writer and director Paul Trillo follows “a day in the life of Vincent, ‘Subject X’, and his many variations that exist throughout the universe.”

Inspired by two books, The Hidden Reality by Brian Greene and I am a Strange Loop by Douglas Hofstadter, Trillo describes the short film as “A look at the infinite possibilities within the everyday.” In this case, “Vincent’s” everyday involves following a would-be lover down the street, his parallel doppelgangers subject to subtle differences in choice and the whims of circumstance.

Why is it necessary to protest? Because protest brings out the nature of the thing being protested, so that everyone can see what it is. In this week’s edition of Planet Waves FM, I consider the two charts that I’ve read for the shooting of Michael Brown and the subsequent protests in Ferguson, Missouri — one cast for midnight and another cast for noon, on the same day.

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for September 2014 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — The chaos factor you’re experiencing may be the result of clinging to an idea about yourself — some point of identity, which feels like insisting on ‘I am’. This has its effect whether one claims to be a doctor, married, cool, pure, gay, straight, trans, smart, stupid, old, young or any other descriptor. One problem with ‘I am’ is that it changes, and right now it’s changing rapidly for you. This may be making you nervous enough to hold on tight — to anything. ‘I am’ rarely describes the deeper and more meaningful level of existence; indeed, the insistence on identity can serve to obscure much else. Your existence is an adventure, a fact that is especially true now. Yes, you need something you can refer to for stability. A relationship will not serve that purpose, especially if that relationship cannot contain the discoveries you’re making about yourself. So what does that leave? It leaves the quest that you’re on. Define yourself by the adventure that’s before you, and within you. Define yourself by the questions that you ask. Know yourself in your immediate experience, by perceiving what is shown to you — and then gradually recognizing the perceiver. Consider the notion, “I am the mind of the senses, the consciousness of creatures.” Who is that mind? Who is that awareness? This is who you are.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — How risky are ideas? For many people they are terrifying; notice how distinctly unpopular thinking is. Notice society’s tendency to censor, to control, and to spy on what people say. But does that really mean ideas are actually risky? Well, they can be, in the sense that they are the precursor to progress. I suggest you take all the risks you can muster when it comes to thinking for yourself. To do that, you might need to tune in to the ways you were conditioned not to think for yourself, which includes everything from unquestioned prejudices to going along with the crowd to believing something is true because a parent or partner says it’s true. And herein lies the trap — the fear that if you dare to be original, or to question consensus reality, you will be cast out of the tribe. That’s about the last thing you have to worry about now; you are more likely to be considered in a position of leadership, specifically because you possess and use your capacity to think, and to think creatively. Here is a formula you can try, which can turn problems into solutions: Catch yourself every time you go into safe/narrow/prejudiced mode. Pause right then, and prompt yourself to question. Step over the nonexistent barrier and consciously allow your thoughts to unfold.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Sex is communication. Whatever else it may seem to be — recreation, reproduction, creativity, commerce — on the deepest level, it’s an exchange of feelings, energy, contact and words, all inherently communicative. When there’s any kind of breakdown around sex, from antipathy or cheating to violent assault, you can count that as a failure of communication. When you notice one of those, the first thing to do is to get the conversation going. The semantic origins of the word communicate are “to share, divide out; impart, inform; join, unite, participate in,” literally “to make common.” That’s the thing to reach for. This concept could be the basis for an entire course on sex education, suitable for adults or children. Think of it — common ground as the basis for relationship. What a radical notion. You are being drawn into that common ground right now, and it may seem on the surface to be about some form of romance or partnership. That would be true if the world were rated PG-13, but it’s not. Biology runs things on our particular planet, and that topic usually gets an XXX rating. Now, there aren’t usually many words spoken in those awesome little 10-minute features, and it’s up to you to bring some form of a dialog to the table. Not the bedroom; that’s not the best place to talk. The kitchen table is much better.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — When people say the word ‘commitment’ they usually mean ‘control’. This is not always true; in the most functional situations, commitment obviates the need for control. But in its shadow form, there is usually an expectation that someone is going to give up their power to someone else. I suggest you keep an eye on this, in whatever direction the energy may flow. Make sure your primary commitment is to yourself, and make sure that you’re open with yourself about how you feel about any given situation. Identify your needs without guilt, hesitation or resentment, then set about getting them met one by one. Honesty with everyone is central to this process, which always begins as responsiveness to your inner dialog. Now, you might notice how much of that involves the attempt at self-control — and you might notice that there are forces at work in your psyche that are saying it’s time to cut loose. This may especially be true around your work or profession. You seem tired of being hemmed in, and ready to accomplish something much greater than you ever have in the past. You do not need to revolt or reinvent your life. I suggest you do what you know works well, always with an original flare, and the revolution will come to you.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Though the Sun has moved on to Virgo, he has very courteously left Jupiter in Leo for the next 11 months. Going back years, there have hardly been any slow-moving planets visiting your sign (Saturn was the most recent one, and that was between 2005 and 2007). You now no longer need to feel like you must make something from nothing. You now have your own little solar system to play in, a planet 1,200 times the size of Earth, with 67 confirmed natural satellites. Jupiter is opening up a profound source of knowledge for you, though rather than being some form of abstract information, I mean direct wisdom. The idea is not to learn this wisdom but rather to become it. This may seem like a stretch for you, but this is the specialty of Jupiter — to broaden your horizons, to widen your mind and to open up a field of potential that you never knew existed. But this is more than wide; there is depth and a concentrated flow of energy revealed by the aspect pattern that Jupiter is making. That is depth you can access, and energy that will flow directly to you. There is no skill you cannot learn or apply. There is no problem you cannot solve. It is essential that you remain open and as free from negative thought patterns as you can.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — At this time in your life, some of the most important soul-level work you can do involves sexual healing. This process has been in progress for about six years, since Pluto entered Capricorn, your solar 5th house. Pluto describes what one author famously called “the evolutionary journey of the soul.” Normally the 5th is the place we seek fun and pleasure, though you have Capricorn in this house, which can act as a reservoir of past conditioning. It can store up shame and guilt from past generations. And Pluto is now opening the barriers that contain those fossilized emotions, all in the interest of setting you free. As this happens, it’s essential that you remain aware of what your body is feeling. You may be tempted to take the process to the mental or abstract level. You may be tempted to go to the astral or fantasy level. I suggest you stay grounded, as in bare feet on the ground. It’s essential that you take risks, especially some that you’re the most averse to. More significantly, it’s time to go past the expectations of purity that you think others have of you. Most of these are in your own mind, and they tend to create aversions to both risks and to pleasure. To open pathways to relating, creating and feeling good about yourself, this is where to invest.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Focus less on appearances and more on saying what you really mean. You might even consider forgetting appearances entirely and investing everything into speaking, and living, your truth. I normally would not cast this in such polarized terms, though these two concepts are often mutually exclusive. Appearances are usually designed to conceal the truth. You have a choice to make, though it may not be so starkly clear now as it’s likely to be around the time of your birthday. The decision involves not just whether you want to live with a veil thrown over your reality, and therefore isolated from others, but also why you would want to do so. You are more transparent than you think, and it would support your concept of integrity to be seen and known for who you are. This is for you, not for anyone else. One happy result will be you’ll have more energy to invest in what you love the most dearly. Yet there is something deeper at play here, which is your need to have an open conduit of communication with others, one that is based on actual vulnerability. I recognize how scary this is, especially in our moment of social history when the climate is chilled to below freezing. Others may think this works fine for them; you need warmth, contact and most of all, honesty.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — It’s possible to be motivated by both ideals and money, but don’t confuse one for the other. It’s possible to take profits gained through more conventional motives and invest them in what you consider socially relevant, though this usually requires a level of care and discipline that most people only ever dream about. You might ask what gets in the way of translating what you think of as materialistic into what you hold as spiritual — that is, what values, or what conflicting desires. I suggest you check in with whether you hold back when it comes to your own stated commitment to make the world a better place. Are you concerned that it’s futile, or that it will take too long to make a difference? It may be true that you’re doing everything in your power to stretch beyond your limits and make a positive contribution, but only you can know that for sure. Be aware that a deeper level of motivation is starting to wake up and make itself known. It’s a kind of calling that can only be answered by taking action — not in the future, but right now. Here is the catch: right now has to last a long time, because only sustained action gets results. For that to happen, you really have to be in harmony with yourself and with your deepest motives.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — All this energy you’re feeling is not just coming from you. Some of it is; your brain and body are running hot. You definitely burn food into calories that fuel your nerves and muscles. Yet you’re also tuning into other sources of power and strength, which you might think of as coming from beyond you, or from some aspect of yourself as yet unacknowledged or undiscovered. I suggest you leave that particular theme an open issue, and observe the ways in which you’re inspired, motivated and guided to action. Notice what forces conspire to assist you. Observe whether plans you made long ago are gradually coming to fulfillment. This may have the effect of getting you to consider what you want in the future, not on the basis of whether you think it can be attained but rather whether you think it is the right thing for you. What’s most exciting is how the concept of ‘right for you’ is merging with the notion of ‘right for the world’. One thing our entire society struggles with is the problem of separate and competing interests. If a higher power or superior intelligence is helping guide and coordinate your life, one of the first places you’ll be taken is where there’s efficiency, and where your personal efforts support, and are supported by, the efforts of others.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Laced throughout the literature of spiritualism and occultism is the notion of religion as a kind of science. The idea holds that there’s a true religion, or that if religion is practiced truly, there will actually be a result. This may not manifest for you so overtly, though it may show up as a devotion to purity, to sacrifice, or to the notion that faith must in some way make sense. You’re a more organic person than this. Yes, I see the appeal of the idea, because the human psyche can be chaotic, and you are in an extended phase that often seems to carry the message grow or die. That is not neat or tidy, though I suggest you not succumb to the idea that your growth somehow depends upon your becoming a perfect person, or living your life perfectly. What you can have, and have plenty of, is faith in yourself. The beauty of faith is that it’s not dependent upon any precursor; there is no test you must take in advance. It’s just somewhere you allow your mind to go. You know you’re there because you have less to worry about, rather than more. You know you’re there when your intellect relaxes a bit and accurate information starts coming back to you. You know you’re there when you feel more confident but you don’t necessarily understand why.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Mother — the enigma, the force of nature, the essential thing to leave behind. By leave behind, I mean various things, such as ‘not allow to run your life’ and ‘resolve the issues that you inherited from her and her mother’. I also mean the role of mother, when that role is more or less finished, or when it’s ready to transform. Yet here is what really needs to transform for our whole society — the family as the authoritarian mini-state, borrowing from the words of a great 20th century philosopher. If we want any scant possibility to live on some shared level ground with one another, or to explore any collective form of leadership, we must go beyond the model of absolute authority that is then internalized into perpetual inhibition and approval-seeking. Father plays a role in this, though in our generations that more often involves being absent or only partially present than it does the former ‘father knows best’ model of family. This can still manifest as the disembodied, nagging conscience — what another philosopher called the superego. You need order in your life. Anarchy will not suffice. But neither will the absolute rule of law, emotional or otherwise. The thing to remember is that personal autonomy requires maturity and an evolved sense of responsibility, though one that does not demand answering to someone else.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Set out to do your very best work this month — that which you’ve always wanted or needed to do; that which you could not accomplish before; what you have considered improbable or impossible. A rare connection between Chiron in your sign and Jupiter in Leo (among other planets) is opening up a conduit that could grant what seems like miraculous powers of creativity and achievement. Yet because Chiron and Jupiter are the main players, and since this is astrology we’re talking about, the process is not automatic. You must bring your intentions, your energy and your ideas. You must bring yourself to the work every day, and resume as soon as you can if you must skip a day or two. The effort factor is what will be reduced or made more efficient, and rewarded by a tangible sense of progress. Yet I suggest you not look back — look forward and work steadily. Focus your goals one at a time, and keep your sense of perspective. By that I mean work with a meta-goal and notice how your individual projects relate to one another. There is a pattern that will start to emerge, and the pieces of the plan will begin to fit together. You may feel like you’re bringing in knowledge or wisdom from somewhere else, and there’s no harm acting as if that’s true.

Night and Day: Two Charts for Ferguson

Planet Waves

Dear Friend and Reader:

When I went on the air to do my weekly Planet Waves FM webcast on Tuesday, Aug. 19, I was prepared with the chart of the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, which had happened 10 days earlier.

This latest shooting by police of an unarmed black youth set off weeks of riots in a city about the size of Kingston, located in St. Louis County. Local and state police, as well as the National Guard, were called in, though as the days progressed, the situation escalated and many times went out of control. Media reports described peaceful protests by day, and then riots by night. The night-time protests were described by authorities as perpetrated by people who didn’t really care about Brown’s death — which seems an attempt to pretend that the anger of those protesters was unjustified.

Planet Waves

Brown’s death is being seen as part of a pattern of unarmed men of color, mostly teenagers, killed by police. Among the deaths we’ve actually heard of are Eric Garner, age 43, Staten Island, 2014 (the guy who sold loose cigarettes, killed in a chokehold); Kimani Gray, age 16, Brooklyn, 2013; Kendrec Mcdade, age 19, Pasadena, 2012; Ervin Jefferson, age 18, Atlanta, 2012 (shot by a security guard); Ramarley Graham, age 18, Bronx, 2012; and Victor Steen, age 17, Pensacola, 2009. This doesn’t count Trayvon Martin, who was killed by wannabe cop George Zimmerman.

The well of rage that Brown’s death taps into is related to this pattern, though the shootings are just the most visible attribute. It also includes the stop-and-frisk policy of the NYPD that went on throughout the Bloomberg administration, the noted phenomenon of being pulled over for driving while black, and many other circumstances. According to the NAACP, one in three African American men can expect to serve prison time.

In an article published earlier this week, Rob Urie of Counterpunch laid the scenario out in stark terms. “Had the murder been an isolated incident it would be tragic. But the death of Mike Brown was a political assassination. The systematic nature in which youth of color are harassed, intimidated, incarcerated and assassinated perpetuates the historic repression of American blacks and browns from the barbaric founding of the U.S. in slavery and genocide to supposed resolution with the Civil Rights movement. This is to state that any of these murders might be considered individually but the aggregation paints a clear picture of systematic racial repression.”

It takes some awareness of history, and some sensitivity, to know that what we’re seeing in Ferguson is part of a very old pattern. Dred Scott, the former slave whose name is attached to one of the most infamous Supreme Court decisions in history, is buried just a few miles away from Ferguson.

Planet Waves
The war comes home. This is not a photo of Iraq, it’s police outfitted in riot gear and aboard a LENCO BearCat armored personnel carrier on Aug. 12 while demonstrators (not pictured) protest the death of Michael Brown. Photo by Mario Anzuoni.

In that 1857 decision, Chief Justice Roger Taney declared African Americans “beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.”

Astrologically, the scenario in Ferguson is set before the backdrop of the Uranus-Pluto square. Because it involves the signs Aries and Capricorn, it’s in the scenario for the government to be demonstrating its militancy. This is the astrology that defines our time in history, in a way similar to how the Saturn-Pluto opposition of 2001 and 2002 defined the 9/11 era. Pluto is a small planet that works on a large scale.

In his 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche, historian Richard Tarnas (author of The Passion of the Western Mind) documents the Uranus-Pluto cycle as a time of revolt and revolution, with stops at many infamous eras in history. The last big stop was the conjunction of 1965-1966. What we think of as The Sixties was a reflection of, or a product of, the Uranus-Pluto conjunction in Virgo, an aspect that had a ripple effect back to the 1950s and well into the 1970s; that’s how these aspects work.

Now nearly 50 years later we’re at the square, the equivalent of the first quarter phase, which is exact between 2012 and 2015. We saw the first undeniable manifestations of this with Arab Spring, the Wisconsin labor protests and the Occupy movement, all of which took place in 2011. The Occupy movement was snuffed out, Wisconsin was crushed and Arab Spring did not turn out so well.

Since then it’s been pretty quiet, though people have had plenty to protest. In fact, I would describe the past few years as having an eerie calm, given the astrology. The longer it’s gone on, the weirder it’s seemed to me. By silence I don’t mean the world — the world seems to be spinning off its axis right now.

Planet Waves
Incorrect chart for the shooting of Michael Brown, cast for just past midnight on the morning of Aug. 9, 2014. He was actually killed just past noon. View both charts side by side.

It’s the human response to all this mayhem and injustice that I’ve been listening for. Each time an incident would increase the pressure on individuals and on society, I kept waiting for the echo, the response or the point of release, and again and again, there was nothing. Then Ferguson happened.

When I cast the chart for Michael Brown’s death, I thought I would see the Uranus-Pluto square come up front and center — mainly due to the aftermath. Instead, the aspect is in the background of the chart, hidden away, as if lurking behind the scenes. I took that to be an illustration of the tension behind the protests and riots.

This showed up as Uranus in Aries in the 12th house, illustrating restlessness, a sense of revolt and revolution behind the veil of perception (the 12th represents that veil into the unseen). Close to Uranus is Eris, a goddess the Romans called Discordia. There is a kind of militancy with this pattern, and coming from the 12th, a lot of pressure.

All that pressure seemed to vent into the 4th house — the home base. I read that as Sun and Mercury closely trine Uranus. A trine opens up an energy flow, and all that energy seemed to be pouring into the 4th house. The chart seemed to illustrate a vast, far-reaching problem so large as to be invisible.

Then one day there was an effect; a manifestation, a flashpoint, in one location most people had never heard of; that location could be anywhere.

Planet Waves
Actual chart for the shooting of Michael Brown, timed between 12:01 pm and 12:04 pm on the afternoon of Aug. 9. Like the midnight chart, which has Taurus rising, the ascendant ruler of this chart is Venus. It’s about one day before the Aquarius Full Moon. View both charts side by side.

The chart described many other themes behind the scenes. There are several houses in the chart that show the background of the question, and all of them had activity in this chart. For example, Pluto in the 9th house describes a titanic spiritual crisis, and a struggle to evolve. The Capricorn Moon in the 9th describes the looming presence of authority, both in reality and as an emotional construct. The Moon was about to change signs and make an opposition to the Sun; Brown was killed right before the Full Moon.

There was one other noteworthy placement — Pholus in the 8th house. The 8th in a death chart is important because it describes how the person died, and the circumstances surrounding the death. Pholus is a centaur planet, similar in some ways to Chiron. But rather than the slow burn of Chiron, Pholus describes the runaway reaction. We see the illustration of a cop shooting an unarmed person six times as part of what has gone out of control, followed by out-of-control riots.

Then a reader pointed out that I had reversed AM and PM on the incident chart. Brown was actually killed a few minutes past noon on Aug. 9, not a few minutes past midnight. AM/PM errors are common in astrology, and they happen to every astrologer at least once in their career, usually a good few times.

When I pondered how I could possibly make such an error, it occurred to me that one would never expect a cop to gun down an unarmed person at high noon. That seems more like something that happens at night.

I remember copying the time from my data source, and I am a pretty good transcriber — I never want to commit publicly to the interpretation of the wrong chart. In this case, we were talking about the same basic aspect patterns. What was rearranged by the error was what houses the planets and aspects appeared in.

Planet Waves
Quaint, old-style riot cops defend the administration building at SUNY Buffalo during the spring of 1970, when protests erupted in the aftermath of the Kent State shootings in Ohio. They are armed with wooden sticks (and probably service revolvers). Original photo from Buffalonian 1970.

As errors go, this one was interesting and potentially useful for a few reasons. One is that it describes the 12 hours leading up to the incident. It was not a random time; if astrology is useful for prediction, one should be able to see the event coming 12 hours in advance, in that exact locale.

Another is that reversing the meridian, that is, switching AM and PM, can reveal the shadow chart. It’s a technique in natal astrology for getting underneath a confounding chart (it’s also used sometimes for reading for identical twins, but I don’t like this method).

The midnight chart certainly has the feeling of a psychological study of what has been driving the protests. The noon chart is a lot simpler. It describes the police state in stark terms. In some ways it’s more the chart you would expect to see; for example, the Leo group shows up not on the bottom of the chart in the 4th house (home, security) but on top of the chart in the 10th house — the house of government. The chart describes a raw display of power and bravado.

At noon, Pisces is on the 6th house cusp. The 6th is the house that rules the military. The traditional ruler of Pisces is Jupiter, which we find as the most elevated planet in the chart (in the 10th), boldly asserting its authority in Leo. The Sun is up there, as is Mercury. We are being shown, and told, who the boss is.

It’s noteworthy that in addition to a discussion of the police shooting men of color, we are having one of the only national discussions that I recall about how since the 9/11 incident the police have been transformed into a paramilitary force. Ferguson is a town of 22,000, a small place. Even much smaller towns have tank-like vehicles and SWAT teams with armored soldiers equipped with automatic weapons and chemical weapons.

Planet Waves
Today’s modern riot cops are ready to wage war on the civilian population. They are literally federally-funded paramilitary squads that can be deployed in a matter of minutes. Photo by Scott Olson.

Isn’t it interesting that 9/11 was supposed to be about a foreign enemy of freedom, yet American citizens were expected to give back much of their freedom as a result of that incident? We extolled cops as heroes, and now we’re dealing with what would under other circumstances be viewed as a serial murder.

James Madison was already onto this one in 1787. At the Constitutional Convention, he said: “A standing military force, with an overgrown Executive will not long be safe companions to liberty. The means of defense against foreign danger, have been always the instruments of tyranny at home.” Madison and others have pointed out that the threat of allegedly foreign danger is an easy excuse to suppress the domestic population.

I think that the standing military force in our towns is a serious problem, though I think a bigger problem is the presumption that a police officer’s shield is a license to kill. It is not.

We pay to train police officers, and one of the things we train them in is the proper use of force. Generally, that means exerting minimal necessary force in order to bring a suspect in with the least possible fuss or injury. In the words of the Department of Justice guidelines, “Police officers should use only the amount of force necessary to control an incident, effect an arrest, or protect themselves or others from harm or death.”

We seem to be adopting the principle that if a police officer feels threatened, then it’s OK to shoot first and deal with the aftermath later. We know that those feelings are not always accurate, since so many unarmed people are killed. If we are to believe the NRA, the only solution to a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. So then why exactly are so many people without guns getting killed? Maybe there are too many guns, including in the hands of the police.

We live in angry, frustrated times. People feel powerless, and I think that perception is correct. There is a lot brewing behind the scenes of Ferguson. There is a lot being revealed. The midnight chart and the noon chart of Michael Brown’s death tell different sides of the same story.

Mars conjunct Saturn in Scorpio: irritation or inspiration

You know people are getting itchy when someone writes in and objects to mentioning in a blog post that I ate lunch. I’ve been seeing this all day. I know what it is — Mars is making a conjunction with Saturn in Scorpio. That is exact Monday, but as you can see, it’s close and it’s closing in. We are all feeling it now. The sensation is amplified by the Sun opposite Nessus in Aquarius, about to change signs. Then the New Moon happens. Quite a moment.

Planet Waves
Mars conjunct Saturn as of Thursday.

Mars conjunct Saturn is a challenging aspect. It also bestows strength of character, or at least persistence and the ability to stay on-message. It has many manifestations, showing up in the natal charts of Lucille Ball, David Gilmour, Mel Gibson, Ellen DeGeneres, Umberto Eco, Goldie Hawn, Carole King and J. Z. Night, the voice of Ramtha. So be it!

Then there’s Neil Young, Venus Williams and David Lynch. And one of my closest colleagues at Planet Waves. Oh, and Martin Luther. Not Martin Luther King — the actual Martin Luther, the guy with the 99 Theses, who singlehandedly took on the Roman Catholic Church and founded the Protestant faith.

If you have this aspect in your natal chart, you have to master it, or it will eat you for lunch — probably once a day. Speaking of lunch, that is.

Now we get to live with it for a few days. You may notice that some people are acting strangely. You may notice that some around you cannot keep a grip on themselves; you may be noticing this yourself. Take a breath. Don’t let anyone get under your skin — and don’t get under your own skin. That is to say, leave yourself alone. There is plenty of self-torture going on in the world; I know many who participate. It’s not necessary. It’s not a form of self-improvement. It is merely what it is, self-torture. If you shift to the space of self-pleasure, you will free up some energy and give yourself a break.

Many people who are experiencing this aspect have no idea what’s bugging them. For some, anything will suffice. It seems to be a general irritant. And that is what makes it so provocative. Mars-Saturn is like an internal combustion engine. It is loaded with horsepower and traction. It’s a power tool.

Planet Waves
Summary of Jealousy and the Abyss by William Pennell Rock.

If you cannot handle it, then it can be dangerous, and if you can handle it, you have enormous influence available.

I suggest you get onto the drive side of this aspect rather than the irritated side. That may need to be a conscious choice. This is certainly the kind of astrology where you can get a lot done. True, you may annoy some people while you’re doing that, but try not to let that get to you. If ever there was “let them own their stuff” astrology, this is it.

Then there is the stuff that we can own as individuals. I could see this astrology manifesting as some intense sexual passion, including jealousy. I consider jealousy a form of erotic impulse by the way. There are other factors involved, but by one analysis, the heart of the matter is desire. Remember that if you’re jealous — it may well be about how hot you are for that person, even though it’s manifesting as a form of obsessive control, which in the end controls nothing.

Nessus in the Air

It seems timely to mention a current aspect — the Sun opposite Nessus, exact Friday. As you can see from the ephemeris below, Nessus is making a transition from Aquarius to Pisces. It spent much of 2014 in Pisces, and has now retrograded into the last degree of Aquarius. By this time next year, Nessus will be in Pisces to stay.

What we get today is the last, and indeed only, iteration of Sun opposite Nessus in the last degrees of Leo and Aquarius. There have been many oppositions between these two points during the past 10 years. Events in the last degrees of signs carry special emphasis because they relate to what happens at the end of the cycle, which is the seed of the new cycle.

Planet Waves
Position of Nessus every 45 days, cast on the True-Node ephemeris.

Nessus is considered the third-discovered centaur. (That is now in question, because a point called (944) Hidalgo, which crosses the orbit of Jupiter, was discovered on Oct. 31, 1920, and is now considered a centaur. I will be opening up this discussion more fully soon.) Nessus is one of the most interesting points I’ve ever worked with — every bit as intriguing as Chiron, and every bit as useful in astrology as a healing practice.

On the surface, Nessus carries a theme of abuse and the response to abuse. At its heart, Nessus is about accountability. This is not a popular topic right now. Indeed, one of the defining themes of our time in history is the lack of accountability, and what often seems like a vast struggle to avoid any responsibility at all.

We see this from the highest levels of corporate and government structure to the denial trips that seem to provide all the lubrication of modern life. There is such a stunning effort to avoid the conversation that it takes nothing less than murder to spark the discussion — and even then, it rarely happens and only lasts for a few days. For the past two weeks, we’ve had some semblance of a national discussion of how the police treat people of color, and we’ve even noticed that there are standing militias in small towns, ready to come at us with automatic weapons.

Let’s see where this discussion goes. I think it’s about to vanish for a while.

Today we get a proving moment for Nessus. If you’re interested in how these new planets are developed, and how they come to mean what they mean, observe the news, observe your personal interactions with others, and most of all, pay attention to what’s going on within you. Nessus aspects can seem to trigger all the unresolved material of the past, as if it happened yesterday. It’s necessary to work with this phenomenon in a balanced way, and to go beyond blame.

Blame is not accountability. It is a mock of accountability, a ruse that goes nowhere. Take it slowly and work with as many viewpoints (inner and outer) as you can muster.

My weekly horoscope today covers this aspect.

Laughing the Day Away

By Elizabeth Michaud

Sometimes the best way to relieve stress and irritation is with a good laugh at the absurd — at least that’s what Mike Whiteside and Ben Robinson were thinking when they started the Desk Safari blog. The co-workers, a creative team at a London advertising agency, wanted a silly distraction from a routine workday. Little did they know their idea would become an Internet photo craze.

The fad involves aligning the head of an office worker with an image of an animal body on a computer screen, and then photographing the odd (and often hilarious) hybrid that results. According to the duo’s website, the Desk Safari blog has received pictures from all over the world.

Considering the site’s popularity, it’s clear that a shared giggle can truly lighten the workload. As Whiteside told Mashable, “I was just taking pictures of my colleague when he tried to get on with some work. Entertaining yourself is important.”

The Ferguson, Missouri Crisis Astrology

Planet Waves FM is presented without commercial interruption, sponsored exclusively by our subscribers and our Core Community members — that would be you.

In this week’s edition of Planet Waves FM, I look at the chart for the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. I describe how the chart seems to gather something vast and far-reaching and then deliver it to one local place, which is really everyplace. The Uranus-Pluto square is in the background of this chart — though it expresses itself through many other points, including the Sun, Saturn and Chiron.

I report on my observations of the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance Conference. In my letter to subscribers on Tuesday and also early in the program, I mentioned that I will do Victoria Woodhull’s chart, but spaced that in the discussion of the conference and associated issues — though I promise to get back to the extraordinary 19th century historical character, whose birthday is coming up in about one month.

Weekly Horoscope for Friday, August 22, 2014, #1012 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — There’s no point holding on, or stuffing your feelings down, and there is no point pushing another person. There are what seem to be competing forces in your psyche right now — one is saying you must break free, or get control. Another is saying that you must devote yourself to healing. Either way, you need to vent some energy. You need to express your life force. And it’s vital that you not allow what you perceive as the constraints of a relationship to stop you from doing that. Nobody owns you, nobody can and they never will. It’s possible to convince yourself that they do, and that you don’t really have any choices, and that may be a core belief that you need to address. Equally, if you feel blocked by not having anyone to share with, it’ll help if you go beyond that perceived obstacle and get real about sharing with yourself.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Push could come to shove in a relationship, though I suggest you consider the possibility that none of this is about you. In other words, what is happening with a partner or love interest is all about them, and not about you. I don’t mean to imply that they don’t care, or that you don’t matter. I do mean to say that you are not really the subject of their situation, no matter what it may seem. However, because so much of relating to other humans involves projecting onto others, and introjecting what others send our way, the boundary between what is mine and what is yours can get extremely fuzzy. You can try to sort things out, or you can refer to astrology, which says: don’t take on what is not yours — and at the moment most of what you’re witnessing fits that category.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Don’t panic. I mean, OK, you can if you want. If you insist. If you think it would be fun. But would it? If there is a crux of your fear, it’s an especially harsh level of criticism that you may be inflicting on yourself. However, you don’t look like the original source of the data. It looks like you’re carrying around the self-inflicted emotional torture gene, and it’s acting up. While you don’t have to blame anyone, it might help to notice where this is coming from. To you it may seem as natural as holding a spoon, and it may indeed have been passed along to you from the person who also taught you how to eat. You seem to be burning up so much energy that you could make yourself unwell. I suggest you commit to expressing every drop of your energy in a positive and creative way. Don’t ask how, just do it.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — If you’ve been experiencing some kind of emotional or sexual blockage, you may be feeling a drive to work it out and open up. If you have not identified the theme as sexual, it’s worth considering, because the astrology illustrates that vividly. It may, however, be something on a level deeper than you’re accustomed to going. That is the nature of healing — it happens in layers. We are all, as in all of us, the inheritors of the sexual pain, mistrust and frustration of the ages. For many centuries, sex has been used against the human race, as everything from a weapon of war to a tool for social control. Society’s current insistence that sex be a commodity is not much of an improvement; it’s the same old drama. Know that you’re unraveling something larger than yourself, but that at your core, you are yourself, with your feelings and your desires — and that is all you need to be.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Life is a game of truth or dare, or rather, truth and dare. When you admit the truth, you’re more likely to dare. This is an emotional level of alchemy. The reason the truth is so daring is because it demands action. The way this shows up in your chart, the first bold step is admitting how you feel. That will take a lot of pressure off of you, especially if you feel like the walls are closing in, or if you have no space to admit to your desire. It seems as if decisions made long ago, especially those related to your home life, are confining you. And that alone may be frightening. Yet it would be less frightening if you would practice some emotional flexibility. Here is a clue — that would feel like losing control. It’s not, exactly; what you would be losing is the illusion of control, and gaining access to a connection to flow and movement that allows you to actually steer your boat down the river.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Self-critique is not the answer to everything, nor is endless mental rationalization. You are entitled to feel how you feel. It’s neither right nor wrong. If you don’t like how you feel, you have two choices — one is to understand the cause and do something about it; another is to change your mind. You can do the second without doing the first, though I would say that’s unlikely. In the end, you will just have to change your mind. The problem with the analysis of cause is that it can be biased, and in this scenario, the bias is likely to be against you. The thing to remember is that you were not born in a vacuum. You entered the world through multiple strands of DNA, into one or more pre-existing family situations, and with your own personal karma. While it’s true that things were done to you, in order to get to the next level, you will have to go beyond blame. Accountability is another thing, and that requires documentation, multiple viewpoints and a balanced analysis. Mostly it involves owning what is yours, and letting go of what is not yours.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — When people are afraid to look within themselves, usually this is associated with the darkness they expect to be there. Sometimes it seems like the whole world is in reaction to this one perceived fear — that the inner world is a kind of nightmare. But what if the opposite is true? If you feel any aversion to looking inward, consider that what you’re afraid to see is the light that’s within you. It may be that the veil of self-blame is just that, a scrim that blocks your inner view, onto which all kinds of scary imagery is projected. You may find that obstacle especially frustrating over the next few days, to the point where you’re ready to tear it down and see what’s actually on the other side. You can trust one thing, at least — there is another side, and what’s there is different from the movie projected onto the screen.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — You know you want to let go. You seem to be holding on as a matter of will, but deeper down you know that what you need to do is let go of all the resistance in your body. This is not about letting go of your commitments, or of your desire for some consistency in your life. Rather, it’s an invitation to honor the truth that life not only involves change, it is based on change. This is true for everything from the development of an individual fetus to the evolution of a species to how we will respond to the biosphere crisis. Perhaps the single most useful, most beautiful and most potent human attribute is adaptation. You don’t want to give up this power; you want to work with it as closely as you can. Change is imminent, and the truth is it can serve you very well, if you participate as its creative partner.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You may be wondering when your luck will run out. You’re not there yet, and you have a long way to go. What I suggest you consider is when your fear will run out. You seem to have reached a limit of how much you can worry, how concerned you can be, how averse you are to taking the kinds of chances that you really want to take. It would seem that your even greater fear is allowing yourself to actually feel. This story is older than you, and it may be as old as civilization, so you don’t have to take it so personally. For sure there is a family story involved, and I suggest you note the relatives whose emotions either ran below the freezing point or never seemed to drop below the boiling point. Yet what is indeed personal is that your own need to feel is exceeding your resistance. And in one burst, you may experience anything from pain to guilt to raw desire of a kind that you are often reluctant to admit to. Start with yourself. Then consider the virtue of living out loud.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You may find yourself in a position where you need to take an unpopular position. That may be the right thing to do. I suggest however that you consider what, exactly, you’re pushing back against. Do you really need to assert yourself against anyone or anything outside yourself, or do you just need to do your thing? It depends on what your goal is, which is partly about your circumstances. For example, in order to make a statement, you don’t need to defend your right to free speech; you just need to say what’s on your mind. That strongly implies that you have a right to do so, and you don’t need to make that extra point. It seems that you want to find your distinct place in society. Therefore, do what you must, do what you want, and don’t explain yourself until someone tries to stop you.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Others seem to repeatedly make the same mistakes, and there’s nothing you can really do about it. You cannot get control over them. What you can do is take charge of your life. But rather than do this in an abrupt or aggressive way, I suggest you take the motivation you’re feeling now and convey it into a longterm commitment. You know what you have to do. You know that ultimately you are responsible for your own existence. Even if there are outside factors influencing you, the quest of individual consciousness and volition seems to be about relating to them in a tangible way. That, in turn, requires a high level of awareness, and the willingness to stand up for yourself. Yet where that happens first is in your own life. It may involve a revolt against those who conditioned you to be submissive to them, at the expense of your own intentions. But remember — this is an inner revolution, not one conducted on the phone or in the streets.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You must have faith in yourself no matter how much your confidence annoys other people. Yet for that to work, you must maintain an unusual level of self-awareness. For many people that is tricky enough. yet there’s one more element involved. You need to observe your environment with precision, while not taking on the burdens of others, or the issues they try to lay on you. And one more. It’s essential not to project your material onto others. The way to accomplish all of this is to maintain a high level of inner focus while you maintain a circumspect view of the world around you. Account for your viewpoint, then notice how many other viewpoints there are. Don’t confuse the two. Just because you’re correct does not mean that someone else has to be wrong. Just because something appears to be true does not make you wrong. True confidence goes beyond all of that, which is why it can be such a source of aggravation to those who cannot go there. You know you can. You know it’s time. And you know that faith trumps hope any day.

Little Worlds Meet Big Worlds

Dear Friend and Reader:

We have an unusual set of circumstances in the sky now — personal planets (the small ones, near the Earth) are all about to align with much larger planets. Venus, newly in Leo, is about to make a conjunction to Jupiter in Leo. Mercury, about to ingress Virgo, will soon make an opposition to Neptune in Pisces. And Mars, finally in Scorpio after eight months in Libra, is about to make a conjunction to Saturn in Scorpio.

Planet Waves

These meetings are likely to be turning points, and they are likely to be part of the same process, since they happen in such a short time span, and because there is such interesting symmetry to the setup. The pairings of planets all have affinities to one another. Venus and Jupiter are the ‘benefic’ planets of classical astrology. Mars and Saturn are known in classical astrology as the ‘malefics’. (Fortunately, most astrologers take a less prejudiced view in current times.) Mercury, the planet of cognitive thought, is the closest official planet to the Sun, and Neptune, the planet of fantasy and the imagination, is the most distant.

That is impressive. It’s as if each of the individually focused planets, usually associated with the personality, meets something greater than itself, something from the transpersonal realm, sending the message that we really do need to think a little past the tips of our thumbs.

One question we might ask is how would all three events work together as part of a whole system? Taking them individually first, with Venus-Jupiter, there is the image of something worthwhile and small joining something worthwhile and very large to create something of even greater benefit. It’s like two essential pieces of true value coming together. There is the image of the small and the great helping one another. There is emotional intelligence applied to broad, worldly knowledge.

Mercury in Virgo meeting Neptune in Pisces is saying that neither rational logic nor unbridled fantasy is enough — there must be an integration of these two essential layers of perception. Usually we get one or the other — micromanaging the details, or total irrationality; constant rationalizing versus delusional flights of fancy. There is no better way that I can think of to activate the Virgo-Pisces axis than this particular alignment.

Planet Waves

The opposition says, know the difference between the polarities. Then stretch across them, borrow from one and give to the other, then make some authentic attempt to integrate them. One clue that comes to mind is that it does not take much imagination to make rational thinking much more meaningful. It does not take much clarity to make what is wildly artistic into something practical or useful.

Mars conjunct Saturn in Scorpio is a study in how desire and self-assertion meet limits, boundaries and authority. This is one of those constant areas of struggle, drama, quest or life lesson. In this pairing, Mars is in its sign of rulership, which makes it the dominant planet in the equation. This says to very gently focus your willpower, and to be persistent without being pushy. Hold your position and carefully advance, though without provoking anyone.

Do not let any matter that might be a confrontation come to blows. The best martial artist knows how to avoid a fight, or only take it as far as nobody getting hurt. A martial artist knows how to work with the flow of energy and not against it.

Be flexible, because if there is a winner and a loser in this equation, the winner will be the flexible party. But take that a step further and go beyond the zero-sum-game of one person coming out on top. Focus on the mutually beneficial solution. Stay in the moment. Saturn will have a tendency to dwell within the past. Mars will have a tendency to reach into the future. Maintain a balance between the two, and consider the interests of everyone involved.

Planet Waves

Saturn in Scorpio feels like something lurking just below the surface. The party who wants to take leadership in this equation will do well to keep everything aboveboard — to get everyone’s opinion out on the table.

I just tapped into The Oracle, that mysterious, intelligent archive of my horoscopes that does a fine job speaking to the situation, through a totally random selection. It returned the Gemini weekly horoscope from April 26, 2004, which sums up this whole scenario rather succinctly:

“This week offers you a few choice opportunities to test out your political skills, but don’t be too cocky about it. Politics is a game of give and take, and those who always insist on winning often wind up paying dearly in the end. Keep in contact with the human side of the equation: what you and the people around you need the most. To find out, you may need to initiate the discussion. In the end, your role is to protect certain key people, but to do it efficiently you need to be working with all the facts. Get them straight, and await your opportunity.”

These are unusual astrology readings, wading into some of the most challenging territory that we face in ordinary life: giving ourselves permission to do what we were told could not, or should not, be done. Connecting one’s true individuality with one’s work is a special achievement, and these readings provide many ideas designed to help you get there.

Your readings include ideas, strategies, and motivational tools Eric has learned in therapy to get the blocks out of the way, access your courage, and invoke your vision for yourself. He brings into these readings his many years of consulting experience with artists, healers and professionals striking off on their own.

The backbone of these readings is Jupiter in Leo. Sometimes Jupiter grants gifts, and sometimes it points to where we can reach for more. In Leo it will be doing a little of both.

Good as Gold will also include a community conference call to discuss the new astrology. This is your chance to ask Eric questions directly about your midyear readings. We anticipate scheduling the conference call sometime in late August.

If you have not already ordered Good as Gold, you’re invited to take advantage of the pre-order pricing until midnight tonight. If you’ve already started listening to your readings, please let us know what you think.

Planet Waves

Weekly Horoscope for Thursday, August 14, 2014, #1011 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may be thinking you’re having too much fun, when it seems you have so much work to do. What I suggest is that you keep the fun going, then connect that frame of mind to the work you have to do. If work is not fun, it’s drudgery, and that is life-depleting. Your long-term mission is to choose situations specifically for their ability to integrate productivity and pleasure. It’s true that every minute of fun is not necessarily productive, nor is every minute of productivity a hoot, though in an integrated reality there is enough to create a mutual presence most of the time. It’s becoming apparent that you will benefit from setting specific goals, then reassessing every time you reach one of them. The central concept here is specific. It’s important to set a goal to a degree of clarity that you actually know when you’ve met the goal. Sometimes you must aim high, and sometimes you must stick to the basics.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Pay attention to a situation in your life that gradually seems to be coming to a head. It’s true that you or someone close to you is reaching a natural limit, though that limit does not mean the end. Rather, it appears as a conscious change in your relationship to structure. Usually, structure is experienced as an unconscious element; it would probably not occur to you to reorient your house, or to move a hillside. Where the mind and feelings are concerned, structure is conceptual and therefore flexible. It usually exists due to prior programming, though it can be raised to the level of a conscious understanding. One thing is clear — you need to conduct your affairs in a wider field of reality, where there is more space to move around, to experience your feelings, and to express your desire. With that in mind, you might consider visiting an actual field and noticing how that feels, or working in a place where you have plenty of room.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You seem ready to put the pieces together. That is, the pieces of yourself — which may be different interests, opinions, inner voices, plans or ideas. They are not separate and therefore they don’t need to compete. Yet you may first have to go through a tight spot where you decide that everything in your mind is irrelevant, which might feel like a crisis. If you persist, you will pop through to the other side where you may notice that your ideas are indeed irrelevant if you don’t relate them to one another. Once you start to make the connections, meaning will emerge. Said another way, meaning is always contextual. The same astrology chart can apply to a child born in a birthing center, and a car running a stop sign outside the birthing center. The meaning of astrology, or of ideas, is revealed by the context in which they are set. The first context is you; the second is their interrelationship.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — This is the time to experience what it means to feel good about yourself. Venus and Jupiter are forming a conjunction in Leo, your solar 2nd house. This is a way of saying that you have full access to your inner resources, and you have everything going for you. Now your goal is to actually experience that. I don’t mean analyze it, or prove that it’s true, or look for the ways it may not be true. I mean experience as a direct reality, like looking at the sky and noticing that it’s blue. One other element of this astrology is that you can afford to be real. Try it for a few days — say only what is true for you. Express what you want. Do nothing to conceal your reality. Wear the clothes you want to wear, skip the makeup if you want, and go only to events and functions that actually suit your fancy. Take some notes on the experiment and see what you learn.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You don’t have to push yourself so hard, especially around financial or family issues. And you don’t have to worry, even though that would seem to be one of your ‘natural’ inclinations. Worry is like driving with the brakes on; energy that could go into momentum is put into heat and unnecessary wear and tear. Focus on your resources, and on your ability to manifest more if you need them. Focus on the fact that people care about you, which has a magnetic and otherwise attractive quality. But that won’t work if you have yourself under undue pressure. If you want to use your mind, focus on ideas and putting them into action. Once you get past the thin, barely existent layer of self-critique, you will find that you are a wealth of ideas, which will go well with having the drive and the energy to put into using them well.

Order your 2014 birthday reading for $29.95 through today only (price will increase to $39.95 tomorrow)!  This year’s reading includes a live Q&A session with Eric (recorded for those who cannot attend).

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You seem to be straining with the need to express yourself in some way, though for whatever reason you cannot bring yourself to do it. I think you know exactly what you want to say, and you may even be ready to commit to your point of view. But something seems to be stopping you. What you’re likely to be feeling is a blockage that’s been there for a while, but now it’s being matched by a new depth of intensity and urgency, most of which is emotional. What you are yearning for is expression on the level of visceral need rather than on the level of intellect. Remember that when you make the choice to express yourself — it’s not necessary to prove anything, or to be right, or even to be precise. It’s only necessary to ‘go there’ — to go where you want and need to go, and to get your feelings out and onto paper as best you can. The temptation to analyze, dissect and disprove may be strong. Be stronger.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — What exactly are you struggling with? What is the nature of your inner conflict? Is it about what you want, or what you want but you’re denying yourself? What are those two factors involved, the desire and the denial? There’s another angle of approach to your life that will feel much more fruitful. It can start with not trying to prove, deny or disprove that you’re worthy of love, no matter how you feel. Rather, you can take the leap to loving — that is, loving everyone. This may sound crazy, or like nostalgic 1960s jive. It is anything but jive, especially for you, right now (if astrology means anything). Widen your world. Expand your sense of yourself by encountering more people in more places. Take a breath and notice how alive the people around you are, and count yourself as one of them. If you cannot quite get there, take every opportunity to learn from example — especially from people who know how to forgive themselves as a way of life. This is the key, to nearly everything.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — How honest with yourself can you be? If there is some limit, what is the hang-up? Your life story for the next couple of weeks will be about working your way to that boundary or limit. Many times in your life, you’ve found it easy to be in denial. Now, between your own inner pressure and the lurking sensation that you cannot respond to your own needs, denial will verge on impossible. Incidentally, there seems to be something here about your mom. The reason she did not respond to her own needs was not because she didn’t want to — by my estimation, it was because at key times she was not flexible enough to change when she needed to. That is the name of the tune — flexibility. The more conscious the better.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — God loves you, but what do you fear? Your charts describe a scenario where your darkest ideas of what is possible meet your most faithful expectations. I think it will be necessary to stay in contact with both sides of this equation, and to get swept away by neither of them. Your fears speak of an emotional issue that you’re trying to resolve. It’s something that prevents you from fully expressing your freedom of choice. The feeling may be some shade of, “If I do what I want, the worst thing will happen.” That is not true, but it is a feeling. On the other side of the equation, you can feel your horizons opening up and you know that much more is possible than you’ve dreamed of any time lately. There is substance to your desires, which can take on structure and form as real experiences. That is a workable tool rather than a promise or a guarantee. Therefore, stay true to your vision for yourself.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You do not have to conform to what someone else wants or says is right for you. You do, however, have the option to agree with someone’s opinion, or to tailor what you’re doing to what you think would be socially appropriate. But is that really going to help you succeed? My take is that you will cover the most ground by tuning into what you know you want to express, and saying (or doing) it in your own way. True, you might make mistakes. You might rub some people the wrong way. You might transgress a few boundaries. And what if you do? It’s necessary to experiment with the edge in order to figure out where it is, and to determine your relationship to it. This is never mastered by considering the theory alone. Experience is the key, and while experience is its own reward, you can be sure that there will be others.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You may be feeling a call to take authority over certain areas of your life. If you run an organization, you may be feeling the calling to get a grip and make sure things happen right. I suggest you proceed gently, though I would caution that your astrology may be guiding you in the direction of being bossy. Keep the whole situation in mind, and spend plenty of time considering where other people are coming from before you make any additional demands on them. Your key to success is avoiding confrontation. It will help to have clear goals, then present those to people in a low-energy format and see if they are interested in signing on. This is leadership by agreement, which is a form of consensus-building. With consensus, the underlying values are the thing to focus on. Establish common ground, which will lead to common goals and the mutual desire to fulfill them. This is easier, more fun and more humane than the usual top-down school of management offered by the world.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — One of the most intriguing things about this world, as opposed to many other worlds, is the diversity of experience that is possible here. You really can go anywhere right from where you’re sitting right now. In actual fact, anything is possible, which means that many seemingly conflicting possibilities are available at the same time. There’s also a huge diversity of potential in human nature, which leads to some amazing experiences, some dismal ones and a wide variety in between. For all of these reasons, it’s essential that you always keep in mind what you want. What you want is the only guiding force that you, personally, can use to guide your own life through such a maze of possibilities. That does not mean you will get what you want all the time, but what it does mean is that you have an organizing principle you can apply when making choices about people and circumstances. It’s fair to say that the freedom to choose is your only freedom at all, which is a good reason to stay awake and alert.

A New Constellation

Dear Friend and Reader:

With each passing day the sky takes on a more dramatically different shape than it’s had in many months. The cardinal grand cross pattern held for so long that it was starting to feel like a feature in the landscape, and now it’s given way to a new constellation.

Planet Waves
Rook; photo by Charlie Lemay.

This consists mainly of a concentration of planets in Leo, and another in Scorpio. We’ve had relatively little action in Leo for quite a while. Scorpio for its part has been home to Saturn, though now Mars has slipped in, as have Vesta and Ceres.

The fixed signs can represent a stalwart quality, though with planets in two such powerful signs in a square pattern, the feeling is more like tectonic plates pushing up against one another. Both Leo and Scorpio contain vast energy reserves, and now they’re being activated by tension from both sides — with Jupiter and Saturn, the two most massive planets, involved. (Note, Jupiter square Saturn happens as an exact aspect on Aug. 3, 2015, though it’s close enough now to be a developing story.)

Squares are good for motivation and action because they have such an unresolved feeling. One way they tend to work is by calling attention to one side of the aspect, prompting some work, project or activity there, and then being called to the other side of the aspect, and prompting some work there. In other words, the equation is worked one side at a time, and then gradually it balances out and the square expresses itself as an integrated whole.

People with strong natal squares can be involved with this process for many years as they work out their seeming contradictions. In a sense, squares are self-activating, always pushing for achievement. And at the moment, we have clusters in Leo and Scorpio that are square one another; for example, on Aug. 9, the Leo Sun will make a square to Saturn in Scorpio — a good aspect for getting a lot done.

As this is developing, the Moon is about to enter the scene. It ingresses Aquarius Saturday at 9:52 am EDT (13:52 UTC) on the way to the Full Moon, exact Sunday at 2:09 pm EDT (18:09 UTC). This will create a T-square pattern — a grand square (or cross) but with one point of the cross unfilled, at least by any of the well-known planets.

Planet Waves

The Full Moon will add momentum to an already powerful aspect pattern, though because one set of aspects involved are oppositions, that will provide a mode of expression. It’s as if the Moon helps release the potential of all that Leo stuff square all that Scorpio stuff. The mode of expression will come through Aquarius, which means groups.

Rather than representing all of society, Aquarius represents selected, self-selected or closed groups. The term ‘community’ is overused these days. There is no community of Firefox users, there are just people who use that browser. There is no MSNBC viewer community; people tend to watch TV at home, away from most other viewers. But there are indeed communities, collectives and groups, and that’s what Aquarius is about, and it’s where this energy will manifest.

It is worth having another go at explaining an idea often presented by Alice A. Bailey about the relationship between the signs Leo and Aquarius in the collective sense. She explains that individuated consciousness is born in Leo; that is, a kind of self-awareness that is born from a kind of hazy mental state she calls mass-consciousness. This is the awareness of people who identify with the mass of society and have not begun to understand themselves as individuals.

Leo provides the spawning ground for individual consciousness. This can come with some bravado, over-assertiveness, visibility and drama — all seemingly necessary for recognizing that one is indeed oneself, as distinct from other selves. This is not as obvious as it seems, or as popular. It’s much easier to distinguish yourself by being a proud consumer of Diet Coke than by understanding your purpose in life.

One of the basic ideas of Bailey’s approach to astrology, and what I would consider well-grounded astrology, is that opposing pairs of signs work as one system. They are opposites that contain one another, like the yin-yang symbol. When Leo meets Aquarius, the individual enters a group environment and encounters other self-aware individuals. A group is not a mass — it is a collective of individuals who consciously retain their individuality within the group.

Planet Waves

This can be a confrontation, or it can feel like an emergence into an eagerly awaiting collective. Sometimes both qualities are present.

What we get with this Full Moon is the full activation of Leo-Aquarius, with both sides of the equation lit up by the luminaries — something that happens just twice a year (the second time being the Leo Full Moon). This will give us a progress report on our experience of being self-aware individuals, and how we integrate that selfness and awareness into a group environment.

Scorpio is the sign on which this opposition is balanced, providing an energy source spreading out to both Leo and Aquarius. Scorpio serves as a reminder to remember the influence of what usually goes unsaid, what lurks below the surface, what is invisible or unacknowledged. This includes the hormonal level of reality, the fact of biology, and the ubiquitous presence of sexuality and death (awareness of which are significant aspects of mature self-presence).

Scorpio is also the reminder to account for the fact of desire, and to understand how its influence motivates groups and the individuals that
make them up. It seems fair to say that both the Leo and the Aquarius sides of this equation will remain a mystery unless all those Scorpio factors are taken into account and given a voice.

This week’s horoscopes are based on the chart for the Aquarius Full Moon.

Good as Gold: the 2014 Midyear Reading for All 12 Signs

If you have not already noticed, 2014 is really two years in one, with version 2.0 beginning right about now. With all of the inner planets direct, Jupiter entering a fire sign and Mars coming home to its native Scorpio, a whole new concept of life and of astrology is reaching out to us.  I will be unfolding this brand-new aspect pattern for all 12 signs and rising signs in my midyear reading, called Good as Gold.

Planet Waves

Good as Gold will explore the relationship between self-esteem, creativity and money. The three are so closely interwoven that in a successful person they are indistinguishable. While you’re on the way there, these elements need to be understood one at a time, as specific concepts, goals or challenges.

I will provide ideas, strategies, motivational rants (my speciality) and ideas I’ve learned in therapy to get the blocks out of the way, access your courage, and invoke your vision for yourself. Jupiter is about potential, but that also means that the human part of the equation is making that potential real.

How do you manage the transition out of something old that is not really working and into something new, with the simultaneous demands of a learning curve, balancing yourself financially and staying inspired? These and other things are what I will be exploring.

Good as Gold is available for pre-order now, at $49.95 for all 12 signs. As usual, we start with the lowest price for all 12, gradually raise the price, then sell one reading for about what we were initially asking for all 12. Now is the
time to get the best rate on the whole package, so you can listen to your Sun, Moon and rising signs, and check in with the readings for your collaborators.

Recycled? Repurposed? Re-Directed Art

By Amanda Painter

Sometimes when the tension of an impending Full Moon feels like it will never abate, a good laugh at something silly can vent some of the pressure — leaving space where more substantial interpersonal negotiations can occur. To that end, check out Re-Directed Art by David Irvine of Brampton, Ontario (Twisted Sifter has compiled a fun gallery of favorites).

Using cast-off prints, lithographs and occasionally original pieces that he finds at thrift stores, yard sales and even the curb, Irvine paints in pop-culture icons and characters of his own devising, giving new life and an original twist to the wall art.

He says he “will never paint over the existing signature and depending on the project will adapt the traits of the original (colouring, lighting, brushstrokes etc.) or will go in a complete opposite direction and achieve a high contrast in imagery.”

Due to how popular these gems of visual irony are, Irvine sells originals only on his Etsy site; prints are handled by Society6 and Redbubble. And if you have an idea you’d like to see him try, he’s open to discussing commissions via email. How could you not laugh every time you pass by one of these on the wall?

Weekly Horoscope for Thursday, August 7, 2014, #1010 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may be feeling a truly odd kind of insecure, as if within your greatest strength lies your worst weakness. You can turn that one around, however. All you need to do is remember that you can. If you think of your experience as being more like a dream, it will be easier to transpose between the two similar thought forms, ‘weakness within strength’ or ‘strength within weakness’. One of the ideas on which the thought form turns is your faith in your power to create. This you have, especially right now, with so many planets moving through your solar 5th house and a spectacular Full Moon coming. Of the Full Moon, the message seems to be reveal yourself. Show the world what you can do, and by extension, who you are. That gesture might be connected with some worry or some fear, though now is the time to push yourself a little, and to take the extra risk, in particular, the risk of being seen, known and acknowledged.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — This week’s astrology describes an adventure of some kind — it looks like leadership, but a participatory variety of the stuff. You may not define yourself as a ‘leader’, though if you remember that all humans are looking to nearly all other humans they encounter as examples of what to be or not to be, then everyone is in the role of setting an example. For you over the next few days, as the Aquarius Full Moon passes through town, you will see the extent, and the relevance, of your involvement in a situation, and the benefit of the example that you set. It would be great if we could go beyond the necessity for bosses, CEOs and generals. By engaging with people on what you might think of as a co-organizational level, you can help the world, or at least your world, take a step beyond that. Trust one thing if nothing else — people respect you for your sincerity. And that is real respect.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Beware of resentment in any form. Beware of the sensation that someone — potentially anyone, though it looks like someone you’re intimate with — is interfering with your ethics or values. It may be that you really do want to take someone’s point of view on board, but make sure that’s true — make sure you’re not being influenced by some external factor, such as money. One test of the situation is whether you really can say what you feel. Do you believe that you will get fair treatment if you were to speak up? If you’re concerned about either of those things, I suggest you go deeper and investigate what is influencing you. I will give you a clue from your astrology — the concept of marriage is involved. By that I mean what it is, or is supposed to be, or that marriage is the pearl of great price, or your most valuable asset — and your real feelings about that, and I do mean feelings and not your opinion.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Do you identify as a person first, or as a partner first? This is one of the core questions of feminism by the way, discussed by the likes of Simone de Beauvoir and Erica Jong and many others. It was Jong who said that she wanted to be a whole person and not half of a relationship. We need this wisdom now, and I suggest you might be the first beneficiary of this body of thought. It has several branches, including the notion of owning another person, in many different shades and tones; the value of jealousy and the presumption of a right to be jealous; the notion of control; and any feeling that might lead to the desire for revenge. There is a light side to all of this, which is the idea of justice, and justice can and indeed must spread into our most intimate relationships. Remember, though, when you stand up for fairness, do so in a way that is fair. If you want truth, be truthful. If you want partnership on level ground, then be that partner, first and foremost.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Your life seems to be hanging in the balance, and you may be experiencing some situations as being unusually polarized. This might be showing up as a ‘me versus them’ scenario. You also seem incredibly restless, which is why you may feel like you have interests that are different from those of others, who themselves may be feeling restless and counting on you for stability. Sussing out the full equation, I suggest that the thing, the idea or the necessity that everything is teetering on is nourishment. There are many other manifestations of the astrology, though they appear to be superficial. The nourishment factor is the deepest level. You need it every way, such as food, space to yourself, space with others, and sex. Space and sex intersect with the presence of Vesta in Scorpio — though this may be tricky, because there may be so many people around, sex will happen when there is space for it to happen. This is a core element of nourishment, though most would pretend otherwise.

Order your 2014 birthday reading for $29.95 through today only (price will increase to $39.95 tomorrow)!  This year’s reading includes a live Q&A session with Eric (recorded for those who cannot attend).

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Are you searching for The One? For the ideal counterpart or reflection of yourself who would complete your life that everyone would approve of, which would lead to perfect happiness? Oh good! I didn’t think so. But you may be feeling some social pressure to fulfill that script. You may be seeing many other people around you play out this particular drama, and you certainly know the perils. I would mention that many seemingly lesser aspects of the game amount to the same thing — the search for the one boyfriend or girlfriend instead of a friend or lover, to give one example. I believe and have observed that people can find unusual compatibility, though the search for The One is much different from this. Your relationship life is potentially far more colorful and more fun than anybody’s prewritten script, anything that your friends would recognize, anything that your friends would approve of.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Do you really want to be the boss? Do you really need to? Despite some recent impulses to that effect, I really don’t think so. Taking authority (in any conventional form of the notion) would be pointless in this situation. Yes, you know things really should be happening a certain way. What you want is cooperation. For that to happen, it would help immensely if you cooperated. Make it a point to work with, collaborate with, and draw inspiration from others. Consider this a special benefit of who you are. Out of these associations, another model of leadership will emerge — something more distinctly collective, made of individuals, self-organized, in which everyone has their unique role. Everyone knows that the world can work this way, and many people have been envisioning this for decades. Even if it’s not happening on a massive scale, it can happen in your life.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — I love the connection between the word ‘authority’ and ‘authorship’. Authority means taking control over something, which is directly related to creating a story. If we add the concept ‘authorized’, that means you certify that the story you are creating is in fact of your own creation, and something you approve of. How would it feel to live this way? You know you want to; you know that the element of story has been vital to your life lately, as has the element of being present for your own power, and also willing to use it. If this makes you nervous, think of it as writing the story you want to tell. The great thing about writing is that it can be rewritten, revised and re-thought-through, and when you are doing this with your whole existence, you know you really are living. You are indeed the author of your own life, so pick up your pen and make contact with the page.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — So many possibilities! So much hesitation. What is going on? That would be a good question to ask yourself. I detect a scenario where you feel as if pursuing the best life has to offer could lead to the worst life has to offer. I think this is a common phenomenon, though for you right now it may be operating in an ‘unconscious’ way. By that, I mean that it may seem like something else, or you have not given language to what you are experiencing. As for those supposedly worst things, they all seem to be shadows cast over desire. Desire is indeed haunted in our society — by various religious perspectives that call it sinful, or attachment, or the cause of all suffering. I suggest you be honest with yourself about what you want, and put it into words so that you can look at them and read them back to yourself. You may need to go through several layers of desire to get to the core of the onion; or you may recognize a distinct, unique constellation that says something that only you understand.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — The question of Self is written all over the sky right now. Many people offer the idea that all love is rooted in selflove, though there is a question lurking behind that — at what point does selflove become narcissism? I will tell you — it doesn’t. They are two different things, both of which are part of our psyches and part of our environment. Often narcissism describes the lack of selflove, which is how you can identify it. Yet there is that part of the psyche that must focus exclusively on its own experience; that must admire itself in a fully self-absorbed way, which is different from the gentler and subtler light of actually loving oneself. Narcissism is a problem, but the bigger question is what to do about it. Loving oneself is part of the solution, though I think that indulging the full experience in a fully conscious way can be helpful. Consider the possibility that your life is all about you. Consider the idea that existence is a reflection of the fact that you exist and nothing more. I am not saying this is true — I’m saying it’s worth running through your biocomputer and seeing what you get back.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You’re getting the message to take charge, though you may feel like you’re headed for some obstacle you presently cannot see. That may be true, though to me it looks more like a point of contact where you actually get to accomplish something, make a change or take control of your destiny. There are two distinct sides to Aquarius. One is the egalitarian, we’re-all-in-this-together side. The other more resembles a drill sergeant. You’ll need to draw upon elements of both to make the most of the astrology that will be coursing through your chart like lightning the next couple of weeks. Remember that all groups need leaders, even if their only role is to focus the agenda and the conversation. Leaders are wise to draw their power from the consent of the governed, making it clear that leadership is an act of service. Get permission from those you would supervise, take charge and get things going.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You seem to crave bonding to a creative project, and I suggest you tie the knot. You may have several choices, but you know the one that you want as your primary devotion. Like any devotion, this will require what some would consider sacrifice, though this looks more like arranging your life around the commitment. You have plenty of energy — I really mean more than you need, so you actually have the mojo that you need to tune your life to the occasion. All of this coincides with some new horizons opening up on the work front. There seems to be something happening on a scale that you are unaccustomed to, at least any time lately, and it may feel a little daunting — though I suggest you not be daunted, and rather align yourself with the highest and best possibilities. That is your path to the highest and best results.

The Sign of the Cat

She comes out of the Sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolor in the rain

— Al Stewart

Dear Friend and Reader:

The Sun is now in Leo, though this is no ordinary run of the Sun through this sign. Jupiter has just arrived here, Mercury arrives any moment and Venus (now in mid-Cancer) will soon be there. Note that we have not had many slower-moving planets in Leo in recent years; the most recent prior one was Saturn (2005-2007). So the presence of any major planet in Leo is a change of pace.

Planet Waves
Infrared photo of the Great Sphinx by Sarite Sanders.

There is one new discovery in Leo, which I’ve been working with (particularly in The Mars Effect and other large projects) but have not mentioned, called Sila-Nunam, discovered in 1997. This is an object orbiting our Sun, out a bit past Pluto, in Leo from late 2001 through mid-2025. It’s orbital period is a shade over 291 years (making it a classical Kuiper object).

Its name is from the Inuit tradition and means “spirit-earth.” Its current position is 17 Leo, very close to next week’s Moon-Sun opposition across Aquarius and Leo. More on that soon, as the Full Moon is rapidly approaching, and we’ll be hearing from Sila-Nunam more ways than one.

Now we have one of the transpersonal planets showing up in Leo for a year, joined by the Sun and Mercury, which will bring Leo and all that it represents into focus.

Leo is illustrated by a lion, which is of course a cat. There is the King of Beast aspect of the cat, and then there is the more familiar version. Cats have an unusual relationship to humans. Of the two species that serve primarily as our companion animals at this time, cats are the newcomers, and as such are less integrated into the total human experience and are much closer to their instincts than are dogs. That is why they seem so independent and aloof, and don’t take well to being bossed around.

In terms of the service they provide, dogs excel at helping us hunt and guard the camp; cats do their best work at night, protecting us from diseases caused by vermin, carried by night-crawlers. Vermin are a specific problem of civilization; hunter-gatherers don’t have grain or dairy storehouses that attract mice and rats. Dogs helped us concentrate enough energy (in the form of meat) to create agriculture. With agriculture came food storage, and with food storage came vermin. Without cats, humans, already susceptible to numerous plagues, would have had more serious problems on their hands.

We find a cat represented on what may be the oldest monument on Earth, the Great Sphinx of Giza. Wikipedia repeats the household knowledge that, “It is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafra (c. 2558–2532 BC),” but John Anthony West and photographic documentarian Sarite Sanders have pointed out that the sphinx has repairs of water damage that date to the Old Kingdom, so the sphinx may long predate Egypt itself.

Planet Waves

Where Leo the Lion meets Virgo the Virgin seems to resonate nicely with the concept of a creature that is half-cat and half-human, right around the Leo-Virgo cusp.

Cats also provide a distinct kind of spiritual protection. It is interesting that the word sphinx means the terrifying one.

I have seen cats on the astral and they are much larger and more imposing than you would think. There is a reason witches primarily use cats as familiars — they play the role perfectly, seeming to understand intuitively just what they’re needed for.

Once you are harmonized with your cat, you have both a psychic bodyguard and also a living barometer for when things are weird. If your cat is acting normal, the chances are there is nothing harmful in the vicinity. If your cat gets tweaky or does not like someone, pay attention fast. For an interesting episode involving cats and ghosts, I would refer you to this article. See the section on “A Vast World of Ghosts.”

It’s a very good idea for anyone interested in astrology to harmonize with the concept of Leo, with how Leo works in their charts, and to get to know people who are born with the strong presence of this sign.

The Astrology of Leo

For my description of the astrology of Leo, I will rely on my own observations and two sources — Alice Bailey’s Esoteric Astrology and Aleister Crowley, whom few people know was an astrological author. But he was indeed one of the greats. One of my favorite astrology books, which I don’t think I’ve ever quoted, is The General Principles of Astrology.

Many of the entries are ghost writings for Evangeline Adams (1868-1932), who is considered the mother of American astrology. As her secret co-author, Crowley (1875-1947) is therefore the illegitimate father of American astrology. I have read that he wrote much of this material in a cabin owned by Adams in upstate New York, not far from where I am sitting.

Planet Waves
Aleister Crowley, one of the people who had a clue about astrology, though few know that.

Both Bailey and Crowley make an interesting point in their discussions of Leo. The sign is so central to astrology and such a pillar of the entire zodiac that in classical astrology, the sign Leo is ruled by the Sun and has no planet of exaltation. Most of the other signs have a ruler and a kind of secondary ruler; for example, Cancer is ruled by the Moon and Jupiter is exalted there. In classical astrology, the Sun gets Leo all to itself.

In Bailey’s alternate system of planetary rulerships, she has three levels — traditional, esoteric and hierarchical. Leo is the only sign where the Sun is the ruler of all three. What this tells you about Leo is that its spine is nicely stacked and is one of the central organizing principles of the astrological system. That makes sense. All the other planets orbit the Sun, which is the source of nearly all energy that powers our biosphere.

Bailey associates Leo with the development of self-awareness and the evolution of consciousness. While all of astrology can be said to follow these principles, she describes Leo as the core engine of individuation. She calls this “the theme of the unfoldment of consciousness,” and elaborates by adding that Leo is about “the response of the conscious entity to the vibratory impacts to which it is subjected.”

In a class I took with her in 1996, Barbara Hand Clow said something similar — her theory is that astrology works because the Sun picks up the positions of the planets that surround it, and broadcasts their vibration into our experience. Since it’s associated with the Sun, Leo would have a similar role, as a kind of central processing core of astrological experience. (As I have already suggested, please find out where Leo is in your chart and what planets you have there.)

Ok, here is a bit more of Bailey commenting on Leo. She is not Susan Miller. Bailey’s job in Esoteric Astrology is to reveal the invisible ways that astrological influences work, and then to bring them out into the open. She writes on pages 292-293:

Mass consciousness in Cancer gives place to the individual consciousness of Leo. Out of the mass or the herd emerges the self-sufficient unit which becomes increasingly aware of its oneness, its aloneness and its isolated attitude as ‘one on the center’ of its small cosmos. This attitude continues to develop and to become empathic and dynamic (I use these words with intent), leading to the pronounced egocentric consciousness of the selfish, intelligent man and to the ambitious display of selfish power of the man who desires place and position. But eventually the time comes when the nature of the Fixed Cross begins to dawn upon the consciousness of the man and the influence of Aquarius (the polar opposite of Leo) begins to balance that of Leo. Then there comes the gradual shift of the focus of attention away from ‘the one who stands alone’ to the environing group, and an equally important shift away from selfish interests to group requirements.

Read this three times if you have to; print it and highlight it and make notes on it. This paragraph contains the core idea of Leo but also one of the central ideas of the whole book — that opposition polarities work together as one energy system. Here she is describing how people begin to individuate, then think of themselves as standing alone, then they begin to integrate themselves into group consciousness. This process is happening for many, many people, not just Leos, but you can imagine that Leo is like one of the core biocomputers facilitating the process.

Planet Waves
Jerry Garcia, one of the most original Leos ever, photographed at Three Rivers Stadium by Robbi Cohn.

Let’s check in with Crowley’s ideas about Leo, and also Jupiter there. Crowley begins his chapter by saying, “The Sun in Leo is its greatest strength, for Leo is his own house, and his influence is not even complicated by the exaltation of any other planet therein. We find the most enormous vitality and strength of constitution.”

I would agree — so long as the person knows how to use their strength for themselves and not against themselves. That much vitality must be cared for, cultivated carefully, nourished carefully and maintained. The more power something has, the more energy it moves, the more attention it must be given.

“People with the Sun in Leo are not only strong for themselves, but shed forth this strength on others. It is emotionally the most magnetic of all the signs for the Sun; perhaps in consequence of this the disposition is usually masterful, and may possibly in some cases become almost tyrannical. There is immense generosity and nobility of feeling, and this again may sometimes degenerate into extravagance. The native is a tremendous worker, but anything in the nature of menial tasks revolts his soul. While not ashamed to do anything of this kind when necessity calls or as an example to others, he will not do it as a matter of routine when there is anyone else to do it for him.”*

Again, true enough, though this partly depends on whether the Leo is at the ‘standing alone’ stage or in the ‘group integration’ stage, wherein he or she will be more likely to draw support and be willing to let go of responsibilities that others can perform just as well, and keep the ones that only they can do.

Crowley continues, “If he finds himself in a situation where people will not do for him what he thinks they ought to do, he generally prefers to let the work go undone. The nature is excessively proud and incapable of meanness. Such persons must be trusted or they can do nothing. As long as they feel they are in positions of authority and responsibility, they will kill themselves, if necessary, in order to justify the confidence reposed in them. If forced into any other situation, they will despise their work and so neglect it.”

Planet Waves
Another original Leo, so recognizable you don’t even need a name in the caption.

There is definitely something going on with Leo and work ethic. Many people have a perception of Leo as being the ‘bad boss’
— too bossy and too lazy. My perception of Leo mostly comes from what I know about the homeopathic remedy Aurum Metallicum — pure gold. These are the people who will indeed take on so much responsibility that they never get to go home from work. It is therefore very important that they learn how to teach and how to delegate responsibility. It’s good that this facilitates the evolutionary imperative of Leo, which is developing group consciousness.

OK, one more topic for the day — Jupiter in Leo, of which this will only be a brief comment. Many astrologers take a negative view of this placement — describing it as know-it-all or arrogant. Crowley is a bit more open-minded: “Leo brings out to the full the frank, expansive, exuberant nature of Jupiter, but the materializing influence of the Sun, as Lord of Leo, is felt markedly and therefore the religious qualities of Jupiter are not very strong.”

In other words, the Leo vibration aligns Jupiter with actually getting something done. Crowley notes Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Anthroposophy, as one of the more religious natives with this placement, though Steiner was a real builder. And he adds that “the Leonine materiality of Jupiter’s religious nature is shown very clearly in Brigham Young, who was more of a theocratic state-builder than a truly spiritual descendant of Joseph Smith.”

He also offers Aldous Huxley, author of The Doors of Perception and Brave New World, as an example. “We look here not for the science of man, but for his religious feeling and his general outlook on life; we are able to consider man by his fireside and not in his laboratory.”

On Crowley’s recommendation, I will leave you with a few quotes from Huxley, which offer a perspective on Jupiter in Leo. By the way, this is a placement that is prominent in the chart of Planet Waves, Inc. — the corporation has Jupiter in Leo in the 11th house of its natal chart.

“The secret of genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which mean never losing your enthusiasm.”

Planet Waves
Madonna Ciccone, not just another pretty face — a tireless worker.

“The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own.”

“That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.”

“A child-like man is not a man whose development has been arrested; on the contrary, he is a man who has given himself a chance of continuing to develop long after most adults have muffled themselves in the cocoon of middle-aged habit and convention.”

“It is a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with the human problem all one’s life and find at the end that one has no more to offer by way of advice than ‘try to be a little kinder’.”

Lovingly,

Thank you David Roell

When I first started studying astrology, I discovered a guy named David Roell, who had an astrology bookstore in Southern California. This was during the winter of 1994-1995. I didn’t have astrology software; David had a chart casting service that I used copiously. He had every book you could imagine, and I spent most of my money casting charts and purchasing books.

Planet Waves
David Roell, at age five and a few years ago.

I would do this by phone. Dave had a lot to say. He was lonely where he was, I think around Oxnard somewhere, in a neighborhood without a lot of people. My calls to him would turn into extensive astrology classes.

I would call his toll-free number, 1-800-475-2272, night after night, and get donated lessons the entire winter, each of which went on as long as I could keep going. I learned a lot of astrology from Dave. He explained every book he sold me, and answered my questions on many, many charts.

He had read a lot of books. I am sure he holds the unofficial world’s record in English for reading astrology books. The benefit of that among others is that he could navigate around the history of astrological ideas and traditions. This was mingled with his love of music, as a listener and as a composer. I think he may have identified as a musician first and astrologer second.

He was also a repository of knowledge about Eastern religion, various matters of psychic affairs, Blavatsky, occultism in general, ghosts, reincarnation, UFOs and numerous other subject areas, and had something intelligent to say about all of it. More than being an opinionist, which he definitely was, he was a theorist. That is what Aquarius is famous for – coming up with theories. Usually they were interesting; sometimes they were funny – he believed that Porphyry houses should be banned. Everyone should know someone like this.

He also warned me about some untrustworthy people in the astrological community, filled me in on backstory I would have no other way to find out, and explained the political ropes of the profession. Starting way back at the beginning, I had some vital intel and took it under advisement, paying attention but never publishing a word of it. He was also the source of many contacts for me – he knew everyone’s email dating back to the beginning of the medium, and their phone number. Every astrology journalist should know someone like this.

Then after these conversations, all night I worked for the Jackie Stallone Psychic Circle reading tarot cards. That winter was one of the most interesting times of my life. Mars was retrograde in Leo and Virgo. Pluto was in the very last degree of Scorpio. The Uranus-Neptune conjunction was beginning to drift apart. That winter and spring is one of the few times I am actually nostalgic about.

One day at the end of a phone call, he said, “OK, you’re ready. Hang out your shingle and be an astrologer. Charge $50 an hour. And don’t undersell your tarot. Charge the same for that.” And that was it. He had graduated me. This was some time in early 1995.

I was determined to be an astrologer and clearly it was meant to be. I had seven years of prior preparation, therapy, spiritual training and esoteric studies including tarot prior to these conversations, but still, astrology is not exactly easy and it’s a big responsibility. I am not sure I would have had the confidence after just one year of focused study to do it professionally.

So I hung out my shingle, printed postcards, started writing a horoscope column in a little newspaper called Free Time, and that was pretty much that.

I have always found the astrologers I resonate with to be generous with their knowledge; I could make a long list, and it was those examples that influenced me to model my career the way that I have. But David was a little unusual and never seemed to run out of time for me. Over the past 19 years I’ve called him countless times, any time I had a difficult case or needed to get some insight on an astrological issue, especially involving horary.

When I arrived in my godmother’s hometown in Sicily, I put my feet on the ground, recorded the time, called him and gave him the horary data and he faxed back one of the most interesting charts I’ve ever seen to my little motel in Piazza Armerina — one of the charts that proves astrology.

Planet Waves
William Lilly (1602-1681), author of Christian Astrology, the first astrology text in English. David Roell was the most recent publisher of the book, in a modern three-volume edition Lilly would be grateful existed.

Speaking of horary, it was David who made the point that you can find out anything you need to know from horary astrology, which is the astrology of the hour, usually of a question. He is the person who recommended that I read The Moment of Astrology, a book about horary, which is one of my favorite books, ever.

He was always at his desk, answered on the first ring, and said, “Hello Eric Francis.” I continued to buy books from him, some for myself but mostly for students and Planet Waves staff members and friends. David was the person to go to; my credit card was always on file.

He was one of a very few people I could go to for detailed information about the book Christian Astrology by William Lilly, the first astrological textbook written in English, of which he was the most recent publisher, and translator of the book into modern English, and of all the charts into modern charts.

This week he ran out of time. A few minutes ago I got an email from his wife Elizabeth saying that David had died. She sent the last edition of his weekly newsletter. He is also survived by a young daughter.

In one of our last conversations, he said that he wanted to preserve his astrological knowledge, particularly in spoken word recordings rather than written materials because he felt that this was the more powerful way to teach.

I am aware that David grated on certain people, and expressed some views that people found strange and hurtful. He had some carefully chosen enemies and some not so carefully chosen. I knew, which is to say I had met, that hyper-catty side of him a couple of times, but that never deterred me from being his friend. He had strong opinions and seemed not to care what other people would think, though I am sure he did. His kind of intellect has a lot of emotion behind it. That is Aquarius for you.

My sense of what he was going through was the fear that his life would not matter; that all his study and theories and teachings would not mean anything. David meant a lot to me, his nuts and bolts approach to astrology helped shape my own, and his faith in me as an astrologer has a lot to do with why I am an actual, practicing astrologer today. I considered whatever he said whether I agreed with him or not, and made up my own mind, which was just fine with him. That’s exactly what a teacher is for.

Horary on the death of David Roell — not the death chart. Chiron is rising. The Moon’s next aspect is a trine to Pluto, then a sextile to Venus, a sextile to Saturn, and an opposition to Chiron. The Moon’s last aspect in its sign is a sextile to Mercury.

Weekly Horoscope for Thursday, July 31, 2014, #1009 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Your charts are a beautiful mix of dark and light, which I suggest you think of as colors and hues. The planetary alignment of Mars in Scorpio and Jupiter in Leo is granting you access to the full spectrum of experience — particularly sexual experience, which always translates into some form of relationship. Yet while this energy is coursing through you, I suggest you think of it in its creative and biological form rather than as needing some kind of social structure, form or commitment. The pleasures and benefits of this astrology are available in the moment, and would best be shorn of attachment to the past or the future. You might think that requires instant enlightenment, which is true, in a way, if you think of enlightenment as being in tune with yourself, what you want and what you have to share. Focus on that and you’ll have this odd sense of knowing who you are.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Someone’s desire for you, or the intensity of a particular relationship, might ordinarily be the kind of thing that shakes your foundations. I suggest you experiment with being able to hold the energy. There is plenty of it, resonating within you emotionally, and while it’s intense it may have you feeling insecure. It’s as if under some circumstances it might be the right thing but the waves of passion may be reaching you at an odd or awkward angle. If you feel the desire to retreat or pull back, maybe take a breath and see where the passion or attraction leads you. You might not be ‘exactly equally attracted’ but does that matter so much? Someone’s interest in you does not mean that you owe them anything, only that you have an opportunity to experience life in a new way, that moment.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Turn it up, by which I mean, turn up your energy, and turn yourself on. Your ideas are sweet and juicy right now, especially if you happen to love words, which you do, though the current astrology is lavish for photos, video and other forms of imagery. Your mind is hot right now and if you tap into your idea core, you won’t be able to stop yourself. At the same time you have energy and drive to get a lot of work done, so choose what you want to do and do it. Pick the thing you’ve wanted to say or express visually and get about doing it. Don’t worry if you end up working all night. You will have plenty of energy for more mundane tasks the next day. And as I suggest to every true artist or writer, keep a notebook or sketchbook with you at all times. Graft it to your cellphone and keep them in your hand together. Write down or sketch everything that comes to you. Don’t worry what your friends might think. They know you don’t work for the NSA — because it would be too boring.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Venus is in your sign now, which has you cast in the role of love magnet. Focus on that and love that about yourself. Keep your energy moving and pay attention to your environment. People are noticing you. You could roll out of bed and throw on any clothes and you would be turning heads. Now, what to do with this seemingly mystical power? Remember anyone you’ve wanted to connect with and pay them a visit — preferably in person, so they get the full experience of you. Be bold and ask them out even if you think they’re out of your league. If you’re already in a relationship, this is the time to soak it in some fresh energy, new experiences, or any immersion in beauty. One way to do that is to love as much as you can from wherever you are. You are in fact free to love, no matter what anyone may say, think or do. Remind yourself of that every time you need to.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Jupiter has been welcomed into your sign by a spectacular New Moon. Mars in Scorpio is lighting a fire underneath you and looks like it’s challenging you to get free of your emotional comfort zones or discomfort zones — whichever the case may be. In any event, be aware of the fear that might hold you back from fully expressing yourself or from taking advantage of the fact that you carry immense protection right now, as well as charm, charisma and a sense of potential. The only thing that could stop you is being afraid or wanting to exert control over what does not need to be controlled. Part of the scenario involves what happened to certain relatives if they started to feel ‘too good’ or as if life was going ‘too well’. This is an old story that you’ve wanted to end for a while, and you can now write its last chapter.

Pre-order your 2014 birthday reading for the lowest possible price ($24.95) now!  This year’s reading includes a live Q&A session with Eric (recorded for those who cannot attend).

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Use your imagination — for everything. It is a powerful resource and it’s especially rich right now. Your tendency at the moment might be to think in ways that are more narrow, more connected to what has gone wrong in the past, or to consider your options with a hyper-vigilant sense of responsibility. I suggest you go in the opposite direction — wide open, considering the possibilities, no matter how risky or dangerous they may seem. Think way outside your normal sense of scale. If you consider a long trip 100 miles, multiply that to 1,000 miles. If you are considering renting an apartment, consider a house and imagine what you might do with the extra space. Apply this to your whole life — what you do, what you want to create, and most of all, who you are. You are much bigger than you think.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Yes, you are naturally social, though this is going past all limits now. You are in a moment of contact, so spend as much time around other people as you can, especially in small groups rather than crowds. Of course, the meeting that turns out to be the most meaningful could come at any moment, so be alert to who is around you and take every opportunity to say hello to someone you don’t know who you happen to meet in a public place. There’s another side to this — this is an excellent time for financial negotiations, particularly where your career is concerned. The thing to remember is that you are a rare resource, you possess knowledge and skills and you get results even in the midst of the unraveling world. You have solid ground to negotiate from. Your asset value to others will have at least one fine moment this week where you get no compensation; the term is pro bono.

Pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. Opportunities are opening up this year; these readings will prepare you for them.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Consider the ritual aspect of everything you do — making breakfast, getting ready for work, preparing to go out. Think of these things less as habits than as moments of preparation for an experience. Take every step consciously, with as much mindfulness as you can muster. Notice how you feel while you’re doing this. One attribute of ritual is preparing space — that might be your desk or your living room or a clearing in a forest. It might be your kitchen before baking or your bedroom before a lover comes over. Focus on the use of space, its purpose, how it feels and how it looks. Remove anything that is extraneous. And consider the central organizing principle of the space, the way that a hearth used to define the central idea of a home. Every space has its hearth — know what it is, and tend the fire.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Allow your fear to motivate you. Most spiritual paths teach that fear is false or that it’s meaningless or that it’s bad. I believe that fear is energy. It’s also connected to an early-warning system that has been hijacked by various entities (religion, warmongers, drug salesmen) and which basically drives people insane. Yet addressing fear is an essential element of growth, no matter what branch of growth we’re talking about. Right now, your fear describes something about your potential. It’s as if when you identify something that you’re anxious about, consider whether the opposite is true, and let that be a statement of the possibilities that are open to you, or a comment on what you want to accomplish. You could say that fear is sending you the worst possible information. You could say that it’s sending you truly useful information if you know how to work with it.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Rare aspects this week suggest you have a knack for investments and other topics related to shared finances. You may experience a windfall, or the solution to a longstanding problem may suddenly manifest. It might look too good to be true. Of course, it’s your job to perform due diligence on even the best-looking opportunities or solutions, though you don’t need to approach this with suspicion. Contrary to popular belief, there is a surplus of energy in the universe, including money. If you want money, I suggest you be friendly with it and toward it. Recognize that nearly any profit or success emerges out of a collaboration of some kind, and that resources and talents can combine to create a synergistic condition — the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. If you proceed in an atmosphere of trust, and with people you respect, you’ll do very well.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Your life seems to be a story of claiming something and then giving something up. If you take charge and assert yourself, you may be noticing that there is a sacrifice associated with leadership — it might be added responsibility or a demand for impeccability. Yet while this is happening you are also being offered new opportunities and gifts from people who care about you. Indeed, beyond the world of duty and authority there is a whole other environment opening up, what you might think of as a gift economy. At first it may seem that it’s offering you more than you are offering back, and you may be wondering if there is a catch. Yet your chart suggests that you will never be asked to give more than you can offer, and that what seems like a small gesture to you might be experienced by someone else as truly significant and indeed unavailable elsewhere. Have confidence in that.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You have just about everything going for you right now. It’s important to recognize these moments, because they’re relatively rare. One thing that might be getting in the way is how much you have to do, though you may have noticed that your responsibilities have taken a lighter vibration. You are able to get more done with less expenditure of energy. Take advantage of that and make sure you collect on the dividends. Speaking of, your work is worth more than you know. Send that message and send it consistently. More than anything, know it in your heart. While you have an abundance of energy, make some important changes that you’ve been putting off. They may involve your physical space, your diet, your work patterns, or taking up some activity that you’ve wanted to do for a long time. As for love, keep your heart open and the universe will take care of the rest.

World Without End

Planet Waves

Remains of those killed in the attack on Malaysia Airways Flight 17 are transported by this convoy of hearses. Handling the still-unidentified bodies one by one, the Dutch have attempted to restore a modicum of dignity to the people whose lives were lost. They made part of the trip in refrigerated train cars.

Dear Friend and Reader:

As Jupiter and the Sun entered Leo this week (their conjunction was exact Thursday afternoon), one event after the next has offered vivid and painful confirmation of a world in crisis. On the personal level, field reports are coming in with a diversity of responses to the current astrology, though I’m hearing stories in the ‘everything all at once’ genre.

As Mars ingresses Scorpio Friday, leaving Libra for the first time since it arrived in early December, the energy will ramp up even more, followed by yet another boost from the Leo New Moon conjunct Jupiter on Saturday. Then over the next week, Mars moves into a square with Jupiter, representing another burst of energy.

The grand cross is still active, with Mars still at the edge of Libra, the South Node conjunct Eris today, and both Mercury and Venus passing through the Uranus-Pluto square. That is a lot of astrology at once, and it represents what we are seeing and feeling.

Before I focus on the astrology, however, here is a roundup of the current events. Pulling this together I am getting a queasy, helpless feeling, and I am usually able to stomach this stuff pretty well. Still, I think it’s necessary to look with eyes and heart open.

In Gaza, a military campaign by Israel waged the past two weeks has taken the lives of nearly 800 Palestinian civilians. The world community is usually tolerant of Israel’s efforts to (allegedly) defend itself, though the mounting civilian death toll is focusing anger at the Israelis and sympathy on the Palestinians. So far, three Israeli civilians and 32 of their soldiers have been killed. Israelis don’t even like to lose one soldier much less 32 of them, and this will eventually have a political impact in Israel.

Residents of Gaza are crammed into a prison-like environment and have nowhere to hide from Israeli artillery. Gaza is not a battlefield; it’s a dense urban environment, and any shell or bomb will kill civilians — everyone knows that. Repeated assertions by the Israeli government that they plan to “finish the job” sound too much like “the final solution” for comfort.

Fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, where rebels armed and financed by Russian President Vladimir Putin are attempting to break away and become part of Russia. They have shot down three planes in recent days — two Ukrainian fighter jets this week and, by my reading of the known facts, Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, a 777-200ER with 298 civilians aboard from approximately 17 nations, nearly two-thirds of them Dutch citizens, including 80 children.

This is the second loss of a 777-200ER for that airline this year; the first was the infamous Flight 370, which vanished without a trace the night of March 8 with 227 passengers from 15 nations and 15 crew.

It’s long odds that the same airline would lose two of the same kind of jet the same year, but even stranger that in neither case is there a properly preserved crime scene. Flight 370 was lost with no physical evidence whatsoever, and Flight 17 crashed in rebel-occupied territory and the crime scene was looted and tampered with before investigators could arrive.

A train carrying about 280 bodies recovered from the scene — mostly by farmers, coal miners and militants — headed west toward Europe earlier this week, and the Netherlands declared a national day of mourning as the still-unidentified bodies began to arrive in Amsterdam.

Two other civilian airplanes crashed overnight Wednesday to Thursday — an Air Algerie flight carrying 116 people from Burkina Faso to Algeria’s capital disappeared from radar early Thursday over northern Mali, and was discovered to have crashed.

And ten people survived a crash landingWednesday that killed 48 other passengers as their plane “failed to reach the runway on a Taiwanese holiday island hit hard by a typhoon. The airline, TransAsia Airways, confirmed the death toll Thursday morning,” USA Today reported.

Regarding the astrology of these air disasters, I have been tracking the Kitty Hawk chart since March for more information. The short version is that the first flight chart has the Sun and Uranus conjunct in late Sagittarius, where many centaurs and Pluto-like bodies are passing through the territory (quite close to the Galactic Core). The chart describes aviation as a brilliant invention and also as risky business, with a lot of hidden baggage — most of it involving the military. Kitty Hawk is in fact the chart for the first plane crash since the first flight crash-landed.

Sheik Umar Khan, a head doctor and virologist fighting an outbreak of the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone has himself caught the deadly disease, Reuters reported Thursday. The 39-year-old Sierra Leonean is one of a growing list of medical workers infected with the virus while battling its spread across West Africa. Ebola, which few people survive, has killed 632 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since an outbreak began in February.

A beautiful, moist spring in the Pacific Northwest has given way to an unusually hot and dry summer. This “has created a fire-season tinderbox across the Pacific Northwest that exploded over the past week with dozens of wildfires burning hundreds of thousands of acres and forcing thousands of residents from their homes,” in the words of The New York Times.

And a four-year drought continues through much of the United States, though the Central Valley of California, which produces much of the nation’s food supply, is being hit especially hard. Unlike during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s, there exists the capacity to pump out the aquifers, which is being done at an alarming rate. They will eventually run dry if they are not replenished by rainwater. Bloomberg reported that farmers are paying as much as ten times more for water than before the record drought impacted the supply.

Finally, the US-Mexico border
is the scene of much drama lately, as Texas Gov. Rick Perry has deployed 1,000 members of the state National Guard in what amounts to a display of political bravado. Current numbers of immigrants appear to be lower than in previous years, but the issue of blocking illegal entry into the United States is a favorite red herring of right-wing politicians and news outlets, so we’re hearing more about it.

What Astrology Could be Behind All of This?

Before I go there, I have a question, in a few parts. Now that the extended sensory system we know as the media can bring us this information instantaneously, sending our eyes and ears to every disaster zone in the world, what are we supposed to do with this information?

Planet Waves
Jews captured and forcibly pulled out from dugouts by the Germans during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The photo is from SS General Jurgen Stroop’s report to Heinrich Himmler, 1943. See original here.

I don’t think it’s of neutral value or lacking in purpose. But what is the purpose, and what is the appropriate response? We live in a time when the struggles of people and their communities are undeniable. We actually see and learn the details of how people are affected by global warming, war and other disasters.

Possessing that knowledge invokes a matter of conscience. This is not merely a question of how we’re supposed to respond emotionally or even spiritually; or how we’re supposed to ‘process’ all of this information. I believe there must be something more.

Every one of these situations that seems to be happening abroad has some parallel in the United States, and in many other countries. Police brutality is out of control in the U.S. these days, so we have our own form of government-sanctioned domestic terrorism. It is beyond my comprehension why Americans do not object to, yet personally pay for, a paramilitary police force that is used against them; why we tolerate SWAT teams responding to routine arrests and even agricultural complaints involving raw milk.

I will propose one response, which is that when there is chaos and turmoil, that is the cue to get one’s house in order. By house, I mean the politics of one’s community and one’s nation. By politics, I mean all matters of leadership. As all of this is unfolding, there is an astonishing social and political complacency that has a hold on our society. Part of that complacency is a state of feeling overwhelmed, and even if most Americans are busy, we still have pretty good lives.

If there is a spiritual piece to this, here is what I propose. Those who draw strength from being seekers on the path have access to additional strength so that they may actually respond in a meaningful way. It’s one thing to pray and send light. It’s another thing to be grounded in your faith and therefore have the clarity and strength to take action.

Planet Waves

Introspection is important, as is personal growth, as is healing. Yet these verge on useless without their counterpart, action. I understand that many people feel that prayer is enough, though if that is true, we might ask why things seem to be getting worse. Note as well that plenty of people who pray also take action — much of the killing and stripping away of rights that’s going on now is being done in the name of religion, allegedly in the name of God.

Uranus square Pluto — the astrology that marks our era — is most definitely a call to action, especially in cardinal signs Aries and Capricorn. Yet it’s as if only the most reactionary elements of society are hearing, or responding to, the calling of the current Uranus-Pluto aspect. Uranus square Pluto is the first and most significant astrological factor to look to, because it’s the most potent, longest-term and most pervasive aspect of our era. We are now heading for the sixth of seven exact squares between June 2012 and March 2015.

Since the Capricorn Full Moon two weeks ago, we have been getting the last burst of energy in the cardinal grand cross that has surrounded the Uranus-Pluto square all year.
This includes Mercury and Venus currently passing through the territory. Mercury just made an opposition to Pluto, and Venus is about to — pushing ideas, images and the feeling of death right in our faces.

But Pluto is also about the need, indeed, the unstoppable impulse, for transformation and change, and Mercury and Venus are making that deeply personal. Widely accepted as the planet of evolution, we might ask whether that evolution involves any actual adaptation, change or progress. We might ask whether it’s a passive process or an active one. We might ask what action an evolved person would take in the face of an ethical crisis.

What is so astonishing about watching the world at this time in history is that it really seems that humanity has learned nothing in our long ages on the planet.

We still engage in war for profit, or worse, war for its own sake. We still engage in genocide, staging attacks on civilian populations. Even if you go back to World War I, which had its 100th anniversary this summer, what exactly has changed? Military airplanes are faster and rifles have lasers?

Some days it seems like some people have developed more humane personal values, but is this really true? And if it’s true, where is the evidence of those values changing, in terms of action, choice, involvement, resistance and most important, creating creative solutions not just to world problems but to the puzzle of surviving on Earth?

Getting ourselves out of this mess is going to involve many factors, one of which is applying our intelligence and awareness to the situations we know require focus and healing. Humans like to distinguish ourselves by how smart we are, but most days it seems like every other form of life is way ahead of us.

On the way to accessing our intelligence, it’s necessary to cultivate inner sensitivity and to do what we can to solve our problems, though of course we meet many people who make little room in their lives for either. Being in a state of constant crisis would seem to grant a pass from getting involved in larger issues. However I assure you that many people who have accomplished the most had a great many problems and ongoing grief that they refused to let stop them.

It also works the other way. Personal work and self-improvement, study of astrology or metaphysics, yoga, meditation or any other spiritual path can become self-serving, and all-consuming, complete with the aims of enlightenment and perfection. And then what?

Planet Waves

A Course in Miracles, which you might think of as part of the modern spiritual canon, is clear that spiritual practice is not necessary if someone wants to do the highest level work. It’s made clear that habits, even the best ones, can become conceptual prisons that prevent actual progress. Further, healing is not distinguished as a special activity but rather something that can and indeed must be practiced at any moment or anywhere.

Spirituality, if it’s a real thing, is based on love, ethics and willingness to involve oneself in life. It is natural, not a matter of debate, of philosophy or of intellect. A degree of mental training is involved for those who want to serve in a fully conscious way, though that is relatively quick (in A Course in Miracles, limited to one year). Some specialized forms of healing require training or certification, but everyone knows that most of what practitioners know they learn from doing the work, not from school. The actual elements that qualify one as a healer are listening to the voice of God all the time, and being willing to help, all the time.

God’s voice speaks to me all through the day.

I am here only to be truly helpful.

I am one with my creator.

Your task is not to seek for love but merely to seek and find all of the barriers within yourself which you have built against it. It is not necessary to seek for what is true, but it is necessary to seek for what is false. Every illusion is one of fear, whatever form it takes. And the attempt to escape from one illusion into another must fail. If you seek love outside yourself, you can be certain that you perceive hatred within, and are afraid of it. Yet peace will never come from the illusion of love, but only from its reality.

Yours in friendship,

What do you get when you mix denim-covered rubber tires and balls, lions (and tigers and bears — for real), Japanese clothing designers and a zoo in need? Unique pairs of Zoo Jeans — “the only jeans on Earth designed by dangerous animals.”

According to the director of the Kamine Zoo in Hitachi, Japan, a Tokyo advertising executive named Nobutaka Namae who had spent time at the zoo as a child wanted to give back. He came up with the idea to let the animals ‘distress’ the denim and then auction off the one-of-a-kind pieces. From that idea emerged Zoo Jeans, an initiative of the Mineko Club, a volunteer group of zoo supporters, with the Kamine Zoo.

Three pairs of jeans (two by lions, and one by tigers) were auctioned off July 7 via the Internet, with 100% of the profits given to the Kamine Zoo and the World Wildlife Fund. According to The Japan Times, “Two of the pairs went for ¥152,000 each, while one fetched ¥51,000.” That’s equivalent to $1,499 and $503, respectively — enough to make any Leo purr.

Planet Waves FM is presented without commercial interruption, sponsored exclusively by our subscribers and our Core Community members — that would be you.

In this week’s edition of Planet Waves FM, I look at the Sun’s ingress into Leo, joining Jupiter in Leo. Along with this, Mars finally exits Libra after eight months in that sign and enters Scorpio Wednesday. Each of these movements is a potent statement about vitality — the expression of the life force energy. The combination of Leo and Scorpio that we are about to experience is unstoppable, though you will experience it with much greater clarity the more introspective you are; that is the nature of a square aspect.

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for August 2014, #1008 | By Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You get to live a little bolder than usual, though I don’t mean impulsively. I mean taking thoughtful risks, knowing what you stand to lose and stand to gain. I also mean a commitment to development over time — at least one year, and maybe more. This is the kind of risk that involves taking a chance on what you want to see grow and develop in the world, what you might call a daring vision. Based on these criteria, casino gambling would not be included. It’s not nearly creative enough, plus there is too much risk for a very low potential for monetary or spiritual reward. There are all kinds of thrilling sports, and while you probably like them and would have lots of fun, your charts are describing something more. You want the kind of adventure that requires intelligence, passion and the potential to learn and grow. I suggest you consider your options and then make contact with the long-term benefits of what you want to do, and aim your choices in the direction of what has lasting value. Right now the way society is organized, there are few opportunities for intellectual risks, or rather, they are not especially popular or considered sexy. Don’t let that deter you. Eventually wisdom will come back into style, and you’ll be in the right place at the right time.

The sky is finally opening up for the second half of 2014, and now is your chance to embrace the opportunities coming your way. Right now, you can pre-order the Good as Gold Midyear Readings for only $49.95 for all 12 signs. You get access to your Sun, Moon and rising sign, plus readings for loved ones, all for one low price.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Your charts describe a time of domestic bliss. For some that is a shack on the beach and for others it’s a duplex on the Upper West Side. What is it for you? How do you want your home to be? Forget, for a moment, what you think you can afford, or what you think you deserve. Rather, let your imagination run free for a while and imagine the visuals, the quality of the light, the kinds of spaces you want. Imagine what will help you work, what will help you sleep and what will improve your quality of life. Think about how you want to use energy and how you would therefore plan for the environmental footprint of wherever you would live. I am not sure the context, but someone commented on the Planet Waves website, quoting one of their teachers, who said, “Space is intelligence.” I love when a three-word equation gives me something to think about for weeks (and this one may last for years). As you develop your ideas about physical space, your mind will change. They will evolve, in particular, away from the concepts of your parents. It is likely that your ideal living space is distinctly different from where you grew up, and now you get to think through what kind of space you want and perhaps most significantly, where you want to be.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You’ve been involved in some unusually deep soul searching in recent seasons of your life, and working out some concept of your value. I would say that you’ve been through a time of making up your mind that life is worth living. That phase of reflection for its own sake has drawn to a close, and now is the time to come out of your shell and express yourself. You certainly have plenty going on in your mind, and I think you know or at least suspect that they are great ideas. Remember, thinking about an idea is not writing about that idea. Thinking about art is not making art. You could slip into a pattern where all you do is think about your possibilities, which is easy and self-satisfying. I’m suggesting that you get yourself busy making your ideas real. This is a translation from imagination to physical form, which you might think of as the great leap of humankind. One interesting attribute of your solar chart is that when you fire up your own creative process, you will invite collaborators. They may be of a higher caliber than you’re expecting and may in many ways surpass your own current abilities. That would be a perfect scenario, since you have a lot to say and you also have a lot to learn about how to say it.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Money requires focus, and several recent astrological events are hinting strongly at a state of abundance — and that you must match the emphasis of the planets with your own effort and awareness. This calls for a vision, which is a way of saying an elaborated set of goals. Most people respond to the notion of anything financial or even the meekest reference to money with worry and irritation. I suggest you go in the other direction, which would be bold intrigue. Consider that how you feel about money is a reflection of how you feel about yourself, notice what that sensation is and then begin to make any necessary adjustments. Remember, though, that the larger theme of resources is involved, and financial resources are just one type. Many other kinds are necessary. Among them all is having faith in yourself. This is not a thing possessed but rather a skill that you cultivate, exercise and develop. By resources I mean to include them all, and to suggest that you have what it takes, whatever you are doing and whatever is required. Have faith that there is plenty to go around in the world. This is one vivid moment in your life when if you seek abundance you will find it. And you will be finding it for a reason, for a purpose, which you know and which is up to you to express.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You have every advantage leaning in your favor, yet you may still feel insecure. In the past you might have worried about bad things happening, not having enough or whether you could take care of the people you’re responsible for. Insecurity 2.0 is about wondering whether you have what it takes to live up to your own potential. You may feel a sense of promise that life is offering, but you don’t know how to manifest it. You may have so many options available that you don’t know what to choose — and you know that if you choose them all, you may be spread too thin. Let’s go back to the beginning — all those factors working for you, described by the Sun, Mercury and Jupiter in your sign (and a spectacular New Moon beginning the Sun’s run through Leo). That all points to something new, though I would ask if you’re carrying some regret or sense of loss from the past. Are you thinking, “life cannot be as good as it might have been”? That would fit the scenario. I assure you that it can be, though it will be necessary to call forth some passion and courage from within. This cannot be applied from the outside. It’s the part of a goal that has nothing to do with the goal — it has everything to do with you.

Listen up, Leo: Jupiter has entered your sign, and Jupiter is about potential — but it’s up to you to make that potential real. For insights on how to do that, pre-order your 2014 birthday reading for the lowest possible price ($24.95) now! This year’s reading includes a live Q&A session with Eric (recorded for those who cannot attend). Says one Leo listener, “Leo birthday readings are totally FANTASTIC!!! I so totally recommend if you are Leo or Leo Rising. Wow!”

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You may be wondering why relationships have to be so challenging. You may even be wondering if they need to be that way. I think that mostly this involves the various rules and definitions we put around connecting with others, which includes various regulations around sex. There’s also a kind of seeming ‘unconsciousness’ hanging like a fog over the whole region of life where people connect emotionally and sexually. It is this slumber from which humanity needs to awaken. Mixed in with the fog are all kinds of moralism, judgment, expectations and unresolved baggage from the past, and from past generations. By this measure, waking up is not especially appealing, as these are the things to which one usually awakens. On a good day there is also love, passion and desire, and though these would rightfully be the incentive to connect, they’re not exactly in style right now. They involve something real, and tactile, and where there is the risk of not being in control all the time. And if there is one thing our society is addicted to at this moment, it’s control. Where does this leave you? I would say it leaves you free to evaluate what you want, which I think is going to take some honesty and a risk. You might also evaluate what you are wholly willing to offer — which will definitely take some honesty and a risk.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Mars has finally left your sign, which changes a relationship dynamic that seems like it’s been stuck for months. The actual dynamic that changes is a resounding message of looking to yourself for the fulfillment that in the past you would seek only in relationships. We have this idea, perpetuated by generations before us (but basically a romantic concept) that we must seek completion in another person. This is a setup for incomplete people seeking completion with one another, and never finding it. This is so taken for granted that people who do not play this game are considered weird, and those who work toward a sense of inner fulfillment and resilience have relatively little to discuss with others who avoid this whole topic. That is a disclaimer — reaching into yourself for your opposite polarity may have the effect of alienating you from certain people who play a mean game of gotta-be-normal. Yet other factors in your astrology suggest that you are so resplendent, visible and bold that you are a powerful example for your friends. You have the chance to deepen your relationship to yourself and to find a place where your relationships to others are not based on a neurotic need for self-completion. Hold that energy and you can have experiences of actual sharing and exchange rooted in being a whole person who appreciates the company of other whole people.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — After spending eight months in a strange and sensitive angle of your chart (known as the solar 12th house), your ruling planet Mars has ingressed your sign. This may have arrived with the sensation of your ear pressure equalizing after a fast elevator ride. And you may suddenly have the added confidence of knowing what you want. In consciousness and in biology, the human experience is driven by desire. It has all kinds of names, with various inflections of good and evil attached to them, though they amount to the same thing. That thing is the desire to live and to experience life, and it’s likely that you’ve been infused with this sensation in a whole new way. The question is how you respond and/or react. Lately you seem more given to the moralistic/control side of the spectrum than is useful. It would be helpful to recognize when you’re judging yourself and others for something that is either natural or not harming anyone. You may feel some need to live up to an image, that is, to be perceived a certain way for the sake of your reputation. If there’s a devil, this is it. While you must always be mindful of integrity, that is different from any form of obsession over what people may think about you. There is only one person who needs to respect you, and that is you — with any luck, just for being real.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Focus on your plans, by which I mean specific plans to go specific places or do specific things. Did I say specific? Most people work with general plans, such as “I will be a musician” or “I will be rich” or “Someday I will write something.” Or to give another example, “Someday I won’t have to do this job I don’t like.” The combined action of Mars and Jupiter is calling for you to focus your self-knowledge into a course of action. Remember that this does not need to be a ‘permanent commitment’ or ‘what you want to do for the rest of your life’. It’s what’s significant now, that your soul is calling for you to do now. There may be a place involved, though not necessarily. If you are getting information about a place, I suggest you test your theory and actually go there. In general I would say the theme of your solar chart is test your theory. If you are into a particular art form or method of personal expression, design a project that you bring to completion — make sure you choose your scale so you can go from start to finish in a few weeks or months, rather than something designed to go on for years. You will both benefit and build confidence from the feeling of intending and then achieving. Then do something new.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You may have this idea that you’re on the right track but heading toward an obstacle of some kind. You might also consider what could intervene long before that obstacle materializes. Said another way, nothing is certain; everything exists in a state of potential or of probability. Those factors are changing constantly as various factors blend and new factors emerge. It would be mighty healthy of you to think in some concept other than what you want as the guaranteed outcome. It’s not only how often this leads to misery. The fact that there is no absolute certainty is your best ally right now, because it keeps your potential open. Most people get panicky if they make contact with their potential or have anything less than the illusion of control. You don’t need illusions of anything right now; you need to be in the moment, responding to your environment, and aware of your feelings. Notice the ways in which you limit yourself, whether it’s with language (such as how you speak to yourself, or describe your possibilities) or by trying in any way to limit the range of your emotions. I suggest you have a long talk with yourself about the concept of appropriate. If you have a tendency to cram yourself into a box, this is the one. There is such a thing as appropriate, but it’s a lot more inappropriate than you may think.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You have a whole new world of relationships opening up with Jupiter spending the next year in your opposite sign Leo. That’s likely to manifest as more and as better, though I suggest you keep your eye on a few factors. For example, notice when a situation you’re in does not offer you space to live up to your potential as you feel it. Jupiter is likely to arrive with a longing for freedom. You certainly have the option to hunker down and wait for it to pass by — or you can respond in a creative way. Another theme of this transit involves making sure that people are who you perceive them to be. You’re likely to see many wonderful attributes in people, and I suggest that you get to know them well enough to see past your own projections. Note, this is the projection of the style of seeing only the best in people. This may be true, with some of them, though because Jupiter (especially in Leo) is so closely associated with image and appearance, it will be very helpful to make a policy of going past those layers, and actually getting down to the substance of who someone is. At the same time, your charts are calling on you to act, speak and choose from an authoritative place of confidence and commitment. May the world rise to meet you.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — This can be one of the most productive times in your life. You have many options. You have tremendous freedom, in part because you’ve invested so much in mastering your skills — though freedom is also an invitation to choose carefully. Best of all, your energy is running strong and solid, and all you need to do is maintain yourself with basic movement, good food, water and as much sunlight as possible and you will remain in good spirits. With Jupiter in Leo, your 6th house of service and wellbeing, the two go together. There may have been times when you’ve resented how much you offer to the world, and you’ve noticed how little a great many people offer back, to anyone. Now that has been flipped on its head. You are the example of what is possible, and you are an inspiration to many people who might not believe it otherwise. You don’t need to say much about this, unless you have an appropriate occasion. In offering yourself, you improve your life and the lives of others. Yet you also do something on the meta level, which is to demonstrate that this is a viable way of life for many who want nothing more than to offer themselves in some way. Meanwhile, I would remind you again: choose what you want to do the most, and make sure you include that in your business plan.
