An Extra Pisces New Moon Horoscope

Dear Friend and Reader:

This is an off-week for the weekly horoscope, but Priya Kale is standing in for me on our other channels — the iPhone app and in the newspapers. Since we have the work edited and ready to go, I’m sending it out to you. This horoscope is an interpretation of the Pisces New Moon from Tuesday. I’ll be back with the Inner Space horoscope on Tuesday morning.

Star of the Sea. Photo by Bev Dulis.

Note to Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces readers: I am doing birthday reports for your signs, and they should be done soon. I will have more information about availability with Tuesday’s edition, which due to various circumstances will be a Tuesday evening edition distributed evenings about 7 EST.

Note to Chiron fans in the reading audience — this week we have provided a solid foundation on Chiron in Pisces that will get you started if you’re curious (those of us born in the 1960s have this placement). The contributors to Planet Waves this week have read like a ‘who’s who’ among the most credible Chiron authors. Here is a summary of our postings so that you have them all in one place.

Monday and Tuesday we covered the Pisces New Moon in two parts; here is part one (An Age of Pisces) and here is part two (New Moon Starring Neptune and Chiron). On Tuesday we did a special mailing with a long quote by Zane Stein explaining the New Moon. On Wednesday we published the March monthly horoscope, which put Zane’s quotes into greater context. And for the past two nights on the Planet Waves daily page, we’ve covered the Sun conjunct Chiron in two articles, one featuring Adam Gainsburg and the other featuring Dale O’Brien and Melanie Reinhart.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

PS: I’ve recently done an extended set of zodiac sign descriptions, which are on the newly revamped Planet Waves homepage. You can find them linked from the sign glyphs on the right margin of the page. They were a lot of fun to write.

Introducing the Planet Waves 2012 Spring Report by Eric Francis

Spring 2012 is the wildest season I’ve ever seen in 18 years of doing astrology. It fits the 2012 pattern of ‘everything, all at once’, even making that sound like an understatement. I am working on the report even as we edit this issue, and it’s coming out beautifully — every sign is coming through loud and clear and distinctive.

Planet Waves

We have retrogrades of all three inner planets involved — Mercury, Venus and Mars. There is a rare Venus transit of the Sun — an exact conjunction of Venus and the Sun that you will be able to see if you have a clear view during daylight hours (you will need special equipment to protect your eyes). There are eclipses of the Sun and the Moon. And then, just four days after the Cancer solstice, we have the first exact square of Uranus and Pluto.

In honor of putting all this action to work for you, I’m preparing a special Spring Report for all 12 Sun signs and rising signs, as well as an introduction to the astrology that will be useful to everyone. This is a package of all 12 signs for one price. I’m designing it so that you can actually put many of the signs into use — for example, Virgo will be able to use the Gemini report as a career reading. Pisces can use Virgo’s report as a relationship reading, and so on. I give suggestions at the end of each sign, and will do a detailed description so you can get maximum use from this product.

We’re offering it at a special pre-sale price for current subscribers and customers — all 12 signs for $19.95. Once the report comes out, it will go on general sale for $24.95. The report will be ready by March 7, well before the spring equinox — I’m working on it now and it’s coming out amazing. Here is the link to pre-order. Thanks for signing up.

Planet Waves Weekly Horoscope # 892, for Friday, Feb. 24, 2012 | By PRIYA KALE

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — A New Moon in your 12th solar house, the one associated with the mysteries of life and what is beyond life, is drawing you ever deeper into the unknown. You may be pondering life’s bigger questions about where you’re headed. Although there will be times when not much makes sense, still there is a soul truth awakening within you. Take the time to go inward and listen to it. If you ask any successful person, they will tell you it all began with a dream. Your dreams are especially powerful now and you are worth much more than you realize. It may take a little longer for clarity to make its way to you, but trust there is a greater plan in motion even if you can’t see it yet. Your potential is truly infinite and you have more resources at your disposal than you imagine. Have faith in your dreams, and more importantly yourself and what you are working toward. You can manifest a vision that is beginning to emerge and your only job right now is to clarify what this is for yourself. Then you can take the necessary steps to reprioritize your life so you can give to what is most important to you. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but then again, neither was Hackensack. Give to a vision birthing in your soul, and you can get there one day at a time. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Revolution. Revelation. Reality Check. has been published and is available. It is still available at the special subscriber discount price for all 12 signs, or the order price per sign. This year’s annual offers an extended written report plus 90 minutes of audio for each sign and rising sign. You will love it.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — What did you dream your life would be like when you grew up? And has life lived up to your dreams? A situation is drawing you ever further into the unknown, but through this process, you are learning what it means to authentically trust yourself. When there is doubt, I would suggest you reach for the most fiery part of yourself. The part that gets angry, or rages when it feels unheard. It will tell you something about your deepest desires or why you have felt disillusioned before. Then you can let go of false ideas that have clouded your vision in the past, putting you back in touch with your reality. Your ideals some would say are rather unrealistic and untouchable at times. But still you know your abilities and potential and what you are capable of manifesting when you put your mind, heart and soul into it. If at anytime you feel lost, speak to someone you can trust implicitly with your soul. There are friends on hand, who’ve proven their worth to you and who can offer sage advice to a dilemma. Above all have faith in yourself and you can get closer to creating the life you’ve always dreamed of, offering you the freedom you need to be wholly yourself. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — An extraordinary New Moon in the angle of your chart associated with career and reputation is setting you on a journey of discovering your dream mission in life. You may feel like a goal you have is rather elusive. But rather than set your sights on success, go deeper to investigate what feels good to you in your soul. If you chase your 15 minutes of fame, you will likely get it, but then be disappointed. Clarify your ambitions and consciously let go of illusions of success or superficial, shallow ambitions, ideals of glamor or maintaining some kind of public image. Then you can sharpen a vision and focus your energy on a goal that truly has substance beyond what is currently apparent. This is also something that can have a greater real impact than you imagine, and this New Moon is bringing you a sense of this. You have benevolent support for your most soulful ambitions, and even from partners who may seem distant or too far to reach. But ultimately you are the captain of your ship and only you can decide what is worth your energy. You may have had your fair share of disappointment and what you consider to be “failure.” But these have all been a process of learning, and you don’t need to let your past stand in the way of who you are becoming. As long as you are anchored in self-awareness you can chart your course and navigate your way toward the success you’ve dreamed of. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Pisces is the sign in your chart associated with faith and with long journeys. A New Moon in this house is setting your sails on a journey likely to take you across the oceans, be they metaphorical or literal oceans. This is a spiritual quest unlike few others in your lifetime, leading you to places you may only have dreamed of or that you didn’t even know existed. Whether this is literally or metaphorically, think of yourself as an explorer on a quest for a higher sublime truth. What you need to take with you now is an open mind, a sense of perspective and a philosophical approach on all that is emerging which will allow you to absorb a greater truth, elevating and expanding your consciousness; this will act as a beacon of light and wisdom leading your way forward. Enter this phase with the curiosity of a child without preconceived notions of what you might find. As long as you are willing to explore your ambitions, you will discover abilities within you that you didn’t even know you had. You can also trust you have and will make friends along the way, who are supportive of you and above all keep faith in a higher power that guides you. You are being liberated and if you could go anywhere, where would it be? This much freedom can be scary, but it is also empowering if you remember that ultimately your journey is your destination. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Deep surrender within a sexual or financial relationship is what the planets are calling for now. Yet this may be a situation in which you feel powerless, as if you’re swimming through shark-infested waters. Really it’s much better than that — the things swimming around are actually dolphins. There is wise counsel on hand now that can help you navigate your situation and what may currently feel like the dark night of your soul. But to trust that, you have to be willing to trust yourself and the experiences life is offering you. Your success and the gifts you have to offer this world are a direct result of your life experiences — so be grateful for these. You can lie to the world, but you can’t lie to yourself. And if you chase money, shallow desires, or try to hide from the truth, you will end up being disappointed. Seek and offer transparency, and most importantly be honest with yourself. Then you can decide the advice you want to take on board and the relationships that are worth going deeper within. Situations don’t make or break you; they simply reveal you and you can trust a situation is evolving. You have a chance to rebirth yourself now, and change the course of your future as you re-emerge with a true awareness of who you are at your core — an eternal being on a mortal journey. Keep the faith. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Celestial activity in Pisces spells a new start for your relationships, and one relationship in particular. But who is it that has you under their spell now? And can you trust going deeper within a connection that seems almost too good to be true? The key here is definitely for you to trust your own instincts rather than idolize another or put people on pedestals, which will surely leave you feeling disillusioned when you discover their humanity. It would help if you took off the rose-tinted or dark glasses. View a situation with clarity and discernment, rather than project suspicion or elevated optimism. A situation is promising but be wise, keep your eyes on the long-term, encourage honesty and you will see the truth. This calls for your skills of negotiation rather than defensiveness or feeling like you have to keep your guard up. Also maintain awareness of your values, boundaries and keep a sense of perspective on what is emerging. Then you can be guided toward making the kind of connections you trust, that touch your soul deeply, and expand your world as you make your way to the top. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — As much as it may have been your experience lately — life need not be an endless struggle swimming upstream. Although you may have your doubts about something, there is no reason for you to project them on everyone you meet. Keep a healthy frame of mind and you can be blessed with intuitive insights. Then you can find fresh solutions to any situation at work or in your life that have gotten a little stagnant. Although change may have been slow in coming, you can trust this is the solid kind of change you’ve been hoping for. You have more support than you currently realize and even a relationship that once left you feeling high and dry has greater potential to offer you. Look for opportunities and you will find them. The possibilities are truly endless. A New Moon in your 6th solar house is bringing you closer to living the kind of life you’ve always dreamed of. But this will require your active participation in life and its process. Where there is doubt, dip your toes in life and test the waters, then you can decide the direction you would like to turn in. What matters is that you live a life that is deep and fulfills from your soul, right down to your toes. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — A New Moon in your 5th solar house — the house connected with taking chances, and with pleasure — is asking you to dive into your heart to discover the magic lurking in there. This may feel like a huge risk, but neither love nor creativity ever came without its risks. And in truth you have more to gain than anything you fear losing. Creatively, sexually and romantically this is a renaissance, allowing you to rediscover yourself like no other time in your life. A partner is with you every step of the way and the more you can let go of your fantasies or illusions of love, the more you are likely to discover this is indeed the real thing. A relationship has more to teach you about yourself and life in general than you realize. And the more you are able to dissolve your fears, the more you will see the relationships that you can trust and have time and again proven their worth to you. Be honest with yourself and you can emerge refreshed, renewed and healed, ready to face a new day, creating your experiences of life daily. You may not be able to bottle something up and hold on to it forever. Life was meant to be lived and in truth — all you have is now. If you can surrender to how you feel in the moment — this is the kind of sublime experience that will last for eternity. As the Beatles sang, “In the end the love you take, is equal to the love you make.” Dare to dive deep. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You may fear you’ve hit rock bottom with a situation that threatens your sense of emotional or financial security. But a New Moon in the angle of your chart connected to security, and your home base, suggests no matter where you’ve felt out of your depth, there is opportunity knocking on your door. It may call for persistent work on your part but you aren’t looking for a quick fix. More to the point, the situation calls for having faith in yourself. As long as you keep a healthy level of discernment, you can rise above your insecurities to see what you can do to work your way out of a situation. Then even if change is slow, it will be lasting. Be honest about the situations and relationships that drain on your health, energy and resources. You don’t need to feel defensive, but do negotiate boundaries that help you feel safer within your connections. Your family and those you consider your family (even if all they offer is emotional support), are a bottomless well you can drink deeply from — allowing you to rejuvenate your spirit as you gather strength to greet another day. Above all, trust you’re being buoyed by a divine force and what is emerging is a lesson in learning your spiritual depth — which is endless. Have faith that as long as you are committed to living your best life daily, you can invite in the greater flow of financial and emotional support you need. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Can you trust what someone is saying to you? And can you trust yourself? You may not be sure quite what or whom to believe at the moment. But a New Moon in your 3rd solar house, the one associated with communications and your community, suggests where you are willing to clear your mind of preconceived notions, clarity will come. Our thoughts and opinions are much like ripples in a pond that distort our ability to see reality for what it is. Avoid any temptation to gloss over the truth. Also be conscious of how much of what you believe is subconsciously influenced by your mother’s ideas of the world. The more you can be honest with yourself, even if it is painful to do so, the easier it will be to express yourself to others gently and compassionately. And you will find others can handle it pretty well. In a relationship, or conversations with partners — speak and listen with your heart. It hears and sees things your ears and eyes do not. And your heart is dependable, wise and will guide you toward unveiling the underlying reality of any situation. Then you can see the potential that exists, allowing you to create a vision into a solid reality. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Recent events may have been eroding your faith and sense of security, but don’t be in a rush to fill a void. Essentially this boils down to a question of self-worth and self-esteem. A New Moon in your 2nd solar house (self-esteem and personal resources) marks a new cycle and period of growth for you financially, as well as within your deepest personal commitments. But rather than worry about what you mean to others, or whether you can ever have the material security you dream of — go deeper below the surface to clear space for what truly makes you feel safe beyond surface desires. Your family and support system have a lot to offer you, and you are indeed standing on solid ground. The more you recognize this, the more you can rise above the insecurities or superficial needs that so often lead you to doubt your worth. Also, your mother’s values may or may not be your own, but unless you become conscious of them you won’t recognize the difference. Gain clarity about what is most meaningful to you and you can attract the flow of abundance you seek. Pour your energy into the kind of commitments that mean the most to you and you’ll evolve a little bit every day as you move through the ebbs and flows of life. What you gain through this process will go way beyond just the tangible; it has an indescribable quality. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Neptune, the modern planet that rules Pisces (the traditional ruler is Jupiter), recently entered your sign, and the New Moon this week marks the kick-off to this period of personal renaissance. You are rebirthing in a profound way, and what emerges in this process may at times have you rubbing your eyes in disbelief. As long as you don’t get big-headed about this and in no delusion of what you came to this planet to accomplish, you can indeed achieve what some might call miraculous and impossible. You have big ideas, and they have every chance of coming to fruition. Yet you also need a deep sense of self-awareness rather than any need to maintain a self-image. Go deeper below the surface, to ask yourself who you are and consciously dissolve any false sense of identity. You are a limitless creature with boundless potential. But while here on this planet, you are mortal and human with one life to live — so what are the experiences you choose? The possibilities are indeed endless, it’s necessary that you choose wisely, which means consciously, based on what you most want to bring to being. Your mission will require focus and commitment to what works for the greatest good, rather than any purely self-serving purpose. Therein lies the key to your success. That, and: above all, to thine own self be true. — By Priya Kale for Planet Waves

An Ocean of Pisces

Dear Friend and Reader:

Spring 2012 looks like it will be a season unlike any other in our lives. That season begins March 20 with the vernal equinox, when the Sun enters Aries. That will be big news of its own, though before we get there, we are experiencing some of the most extraordinary Pisces energy anyone can remember.

Planet Waves

I learned something about Pisces recently that I want to share with you. Dane Rudhyar, one of the inventors of astrology as we know it (humanistic with a touch of spiritual; psychological and compassionate) wrote that Pisces is the sign of courage and of faith in the future. He was emphatic about this. His other ideas about Pisces included the way in which, when faced with this cosmic energy wherein the ego can dissolve, we are able to see the world in a new way, without the trappings of the past.

And from this same sign we can draw on a wellspring of courage and faith in the future. I don’t know about you, but I’m through hearing from self-proclaimed prophets of doom who offer no practical ideas. Humanity is certainly in a predicament, but then if you read history, it always seems to be in one or another. And at this stage I can think of no better resources than courage or faith in the future.

Two slow-moving planets have taken up residence in Pisces — Chiron and Neptune. This is making the usually ineffable energy of this sign come through boldly and clearly. On Tuesday, Feb. 21, the Pisces New Moon happened conjunct both of those planets, setting off an age of Pisces that promises to be as challenging as it is beautiful in its potential. The world is a harsh place for Pisces energy. Think of how many of the most creative people of our time are recruited and basically bought off to make television commercials. Imagine if all that energy went into something that fed the soul and propagated beauty.

Or consider the subtle energy, the feelings and the ideas, that are drowned in the ocean of liquor that’s consumed around the world every day. Consider how most movies feature repeated scenes of death and no scenes of lovemaking, because sex is allegedly too controversial. Pisces is feminine energy, and notice the all-out war on women that is being waged by politicians right now, in the form of attempting to deny them their medical choices and personal autonomy. Consider the imagination energy that goes into making up lies as opposed to creating interesting stories.

Pisces is easily exploited, but now there are some mighty players present there — the healer, Chiron; the lord of the seas, Neptune; the goddess of protection, Pallas Athene; and as of last week, the day before the quarter Moon, Mercury. So we have something durable to stand up with. Pisces now has substance; Neptune increases the inspiration factor, and Chiron focuses the gift of applying that inspiration to real situations in life.

This week I was corresponding with Zane Stein, who wrote the first book about Chiron. He offered some thoughts about the recent New Moon, which he said, “emphasizes the extremes of the two fish swimming in opposite directions (spiritual growth, for example, versus escapism). Consider the conjunction with Neptune as upping the ante. The potential for spiritual growth is so much, much more so now than any of us have ever experienced in this lifetime, but likewise the potential for self-destruction is equally greater.”

The recent new Moon was also conjunct Pallas Athene, a guardian asteroid with a gift for strategy. “Pallas/Chiron can enable us to fight against anything that is blocking us from trying to heal our wounds, and linked with Neptune enable us to see a much, much larger picture than we even dreamt possible. But there will be so many, many temptations to follow other pathways … false paths that lead nowhere, false gurus that are full of lies, drugs that promise enlightenment.”

And he concluded: “One key to making this the beginning of a positive new cycle is for each person to truly believe (Pisces’ keywords include ‘I believe’) in the basic goodness of the universe, and that we are all its children, made out of the same ‘goodness’. Then ask yourself, “What inner dichotomy, what inner battle, do I need to face, and heal, to make me more whole and more at one with Spirit?”

These are the real questions of our times.

Here is your extended horoscope for March 2012. These apply to your Sun, Moon and rising signs.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

Note to Readers: Yesterday Amanda posted an interpretation of the chart of Anais Nin, a favorite writer of many. She’s a Pisces and the 21st was her birthday. You can read the whole article on the Planet Waves daily page.

Note About the Photos: The photos with this edition were taken by Bev Dulis, a great friend of Planet Waves and one of our amazing photographers. They are taken in the deep, cold waters of the Pacific Northwest — not in a big saltwater aquarium. We always contact Bev around Pisces time to request fish pictures out of her archives. She has since graduated to photographing cats.

Planet Waves

Now on Planet Waves FM: The Fire Breathing Fish

Today’s edition of Planet Waves FM was recorded Tuesday right before the Pisces New Moon, by your host, the Fire Breathing Fish. It morphs from a reading of the New Moon chart into a rant on women’s autonomy and what used to be called reproductive rights. Casting the issue as total sovereignty is more accurate. But it lacks a certain appeal — where there are rights, there are responsibilities. Privilege without a corresponding sense of duty is inherently toxic — and even well-bred royalty know this. If we’re wondering why any woman is willing to give up her rights, her autonomy or her sovereignty, the answer may be found in her relationship to being a steward of her own body and the power that it contains.

Planet Waves
The Virgo Squad — Betty Dodson, right, with Planet Waves friend and contributor Beth Bagner.

At a certain point in the podcast I launch into a tirade on the religious ‘right’ doing its takedown of women, and then describe a new video by my mentor and friend Betty Dodson. She’s recently come out with a new video in her series on women’s sexuality, a documentary of one of her bodysex workshops.

It includes discussion of body image, sexual evolution, making choices, the struggle with sex within relationships and many other topics. Part of the problem we face is that we don’t know how to talk about sex, we’re embarrassed to do so, it rarely happens so we don’t get any practice, and we’re afraid that Western civilization (or at least our relationship) will collapse if we even try. I guess we will have to see. What this DVD offers most of all is a model for a sane conversation about sex and sexuality. If nothing else, we get a model for how to think and how to speak — in an original way, but within a framework that includes boundaries, a sense of purpose and most important, a sense of humor.

It’s twenty-sodding-twelve and we’re really discussing whether people have a right to use birth control? Or rather a bunch of men who want to take public office and be commander-in-chief are discussing whether women have a right to use birth control? Most of the time I look at this and I cannot believe it’s even happening.

I recommend all of Betty’s videos but my personal favorite is Her Life of Sex and Art, a frank (and frankly hilarious) talk given by Betty in good old politically correct, may I please glance at you Seattle. This is Betty at her most authentic and spontaneous — an off the cuff description of her life, that is, her life of art and sex. This DVD is $10 and it’s nothing but fun. If you would like to read more about Betty, here is one of my articles about her.

Monthly Horoscope for March 2012 | Eric’s Zodiac Sign Descriptions

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You’re still figuring out how to handle the sensation of constant change, though I assure you that retreating to the past is not the way to do it. Understanding the past will help, to the extent that’s possible, though the past is usually more a question of interpretation than of ‘truth’. That said, certain facts are coming to light, about choices you’ve made, things that you’ve said and that have been said to you, and on a deeper level, how you felt about these things that influenced the direction of your life. If you’re going to let this information inform your choices today, do so creatively. Making choices based on past regrets doesn’t work. It’s far better to acknowledge what’s happened and then choose based on an open concept of the future. You know what you want. It’s different from what you wanted in the past, and that seems to be the whole point of your life now and for the foreseeable future: a different life, where different things happen. The way forward may not be clear now or for the next six weeks or so as Mars finishes up its long retrograde in Virgo. But you can go far to resolve old hangups, get a grip on your health, let go of attachments, and focus on getting clear about your top three priorities. I suggest you let yourself feel just fine if all three involve your drive for professional success and financial wellbeing. It’s about time, isn’t it?

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Jerry Garcia used to remind us that, “Every silver lining’s got a touch of gray.” He meant that as a caution against believing in a perfect life, and there was something in there about making peace with growing older. Let me put it another way. The fact that you might be willing to take a gamble implies that you’ve got something to lose. You wouldn’t be taking a risk otherwise, would you? At the moment you may be remembering every bet you ever lost, and at the same time feeling less than willing to put something on the line. The truth is, something is at stake. And you might feel better about that if you felt more confident in who you are and what you want. Aspects this month seem destined to stir up that question again, but it’s not for nothing. You’re trying to break free of the past with every cell in your body, and with every photon in your aura. Who has held you down in the past, and how have they done it? That’s the place to set everyone else free. In any event, the whole matter of desire is up for review. How you feel about wanting, and how you feel about having, are at the heart of your struggle with contentment. If your standard is perfection, you may never get to the point where you feel satisfied. But there may be a way to change your standard without actually compromising what you want.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You’re figuring out that you have to be happy where you are, and at the moment the primary question seems to be whether you feel safe where you are. What you’re experiencing may be about your circumstances, but rather than wait for those circumstances to change, this would be a good time to start making adjustments. Make a list of everything in your life that has surpassed a limit: for example, too much, too little or too long. Focus on those first. Set some new limits on when you’re going to make at least one decision on each of them, related to taking action. If solving an old, persistent issue is too daunting, take some target practice on a few less intractable ones. I know you’re having to do this in a time when your patience might be running in short supply, and when people might not be acting in such a cooperative manner. So I suggest you give yourself some motivations to muster some gumption. Let one of them be creative fulfillment and a significant measure of professional success. These things matter to you now, and they will continue to gain importance to you over the next few years. There is a direct quotient. Think of it this way: Every quantum of energy you free from frustration will give you three quanta for something you like to do. Further, each time you do that you will be saving energy over an extended period of time.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — The stakes do seem to be going up, don’t they? You have more ideas, more to do and on a regular basis more is expected of you. But you can be thankful of one thing: you’re doing a fine job of bashing through the glass ceiling. What’s even more interesting is that you’re doing it against some considerable odds, and in your own way. I suggest at this relatively early juncture that you not put too much energy into fighting the battles of yesteryear, yesterdecade or yestercentury. In fact I suggest you get out of the business of battles entirely. Your real stock in trade is innovation. People are not only more open to new ideas than before, most are entirely confused and looking for anything with a vague shred of meaning, and you have a lot more than that going for you. While you’re likely to be as ambitious and energized about accomplishing real things as you’ve ever been (probably a lot more than ever), you’ve got the gift of insight right now, and faith in yourself. That’s the real source of your energy. It’s as if something, some source or flow, is coming in from another dimension and you can tap into it. The thing that can trip you up is your mind, and you have to practice a mix of multitasking and overfocus. There should be a word for it and someone — maybe you — can teach workshops. But don’t be too clever. If you’ve got to outsmart anyone, it’s yourself.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You know more about people close to you than you may think; you have all the information you need. Now it’s up to you to put that information to work for your mutual benefit. It’s good that your secrets are safe, and even better that you’re a natural-born diplomat who knows that part of your role in life is to help the world build cohesion. You’re in the perfect position to find the common ground among people that nobody else seems to be able to see. I suggest, however, not putting your own needs too far to the back. You’re able to do that, and I’m here to remind you that the very people you’re assisting are available to assist you, if you would be a little more open about your desires, and to receiving support. For the moment you may still be figuring out what matters, which is a plus — most people never even try. Others who know what they want can be dangerous because that blinds them to all else. You’re starting from the position of common ground, and have faith that it’s big enough for everyone. As you get closer to understanding what matters to you, and more to the point, why it matters, you’ll be able to balance your own priorities with those of the circumstances you’re in and get a strong mutual energy going. Keep working toward clarity about what you value, and purging your attachments to what no longer serves anyone.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You seem to be on a quest for something: the source of something within yourself. That same thing seems obvious about others when you look to them, though the inner blind spot you have is mysterious. What is the source of your energy, the source of love, the origin of creativity? It would help if you would trust instead of question. Yet that defies the very logic that you seek. You might ask: what is the source of logic, and of rationality? There’s a bold image in your charts about wanting to burst free, let go and run with life. You even seem to have the opportunities available. You don’t have to choose on the basis of ‘who you really are’. Experimenting is not a commitment to anything special, and I’m suggesting that your quest for self-knowledge might really be a challenge to meet the world on equal terms and plunge into experiences that will teach you about yourself. This is another way of saying you don’t need a theory; you’ll be a lot happier with direct impressions, and encounters with people that will challenge you in ways you’ve never experienced. I’m not, by the way, suggesting that you search for yourself outside yourself, but rather that you immerse yourself in a waiting and eager world and see what that does to your sense of who you are. Notice what it teaches you about what you want. Experience the challenge to trust in a way that is immediate and not theoretical.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Yours is the sign of balance, but right now you’re more like the hyperspace seesaw than you are a delicate scale. Yet what’s amazing is that you’re actually standing on solid ground, no matter how high the energy ramps up. In fact you’re providing a counterweight to your whole situation — including the super-high energy of many people around you. You’re good this way — providing a kind of opposite influence that’s able to embrace whatever is going on around you and still have fun in the mix of it all. Opportunities abound, including meetings with new people, and whole new communities of people, and they’re going to progress fast, so I suggest you not worry if you seem to miss something. I would offer a few words of caution, though. You need your rest. Don’t worry if you’re not half the party animal you used to be; you make up for it in appreciation. Any physical symptoms you may experience indicate whether your stress level is getting too high. Spend enough time alone so that you can actually feel what’s going on in your body and in your soul. Remember that while you love contact and thrive on relationships, your emotional independence is key to your happiness. Given your current circumstances, which will keep drawing you in, you’ll need to remind yourself of this. The more you cultivate some autonomy and even sovereignty, the more fully you’ll be able to indulge yourself in the amazing experiences that life is offering you right now.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — When we use the phrase ‘change my mind’, we make it sound like a decision that we can change right back. I would propose that to change your mind is to change yourself, when you really do it. You actually rearrange aspects of not just your thought pattern but also your neurology. One special point of focus of your life now is changing your mind about how you respond to the expectations of others. Few would accuse you of being a conformist, but you’re someone who is keenly sensitive to what others believe. In recent months you’ve been sorting out this particular relationship — the one between you and ‘everyone else’. You’re not done with this process yet; you’ve yet to reach escape velocity, but I believe you’re at the point where you’re learning to notice that there is indeed a contrast between your ideas about life, and the things that you want, and those of others — including what others claim to want for you. Globally, this setup creates tension so subtle and so pervasive that few notice its existence, yet many are trapped within it. You may need to be pushy or what seems like overly assertive to establish your way of doing things, the one that’s right for you — and I suggest you err on the side of too bold rather than not bold enough. This will help you locate and learn to effectively work a boundary that you’ve been struggling with for a while.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Focus on the task at hand and your goals will take care of themselves. Be grateful you have goals, anyway, even if you don’t quite understand the process of how you’re getting there. That aspect of your life is going considerably better than you may believe — whether you think it’s going brilliantly or a bit less than that. Your direction is well set, and the way I suggest you express it is through devoting yourself passionately to the quality of the work you’re doing rather than where you expect it to take you. This calls for an act of trust, but not such a big one. In fact, as you involve yourself directly in the tangible substance of what you’re working on, you’re learning many things that are helping you sort out elements of the big picture, refine your methods and get clear in your ideas about what you’re doing. One thing about your sense of mission — think of yourself on a quest for your roots. You’re working your way backwards through many different evolutions of your ‘goals’ toward a wellspring at the core of yourself. While you’re doing this, clear away everyone else’s goals that you might be influenced by. Do your best to scrap your ‘sense of service’ for something deeper: what you know is right for you (which will end up being of service even more). And please do something that many people scrap on the way to success: deepen your emotional roots rather than pull them up.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — One challenge you face is maintaining your sense of integrity in the midst of constant change. Remember that integrity is something that you have or don’t have, but how you feel is another story. In fact, there are aspects of your consciousness and your psyche that are disintegrating. They are quite literally coming apart, and it’s about time. The purpose of this is to release energy that is trapped in structure, a little like taking the honey out of honeycombs. What you want is the substance that contains the nutrients — not the shape of the container. So, remember — this is about a feeling, and the feeling is having some sense of stability in the presence of the constant pressure for things to be different, and the experience of the ground shifting under your feet. You have your integrity if you’re up and walking. You have your integrity if you’re noticing the world around you, including noticing the changes to which you feel subjected. After a while — if it hasn’t already happened — you’ll find your center not in the sense of being attached to anything or anyplace, but in your way of perceiving your relationship to the world. Said more simply, everything changes and changes all the time. Stability is an illusion of perception. You will feel the most grounded when your perceptions change as fast as the events you’re noticing: when you match your vibration to your experience. There is nothing to cling to, and there never was.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Imagine your life is a dream that’s about to become a lucid dream — one wherein you ‘wake up’ and figure out that you’re dreaming, and that quality of consciousness gives you the ability to guide the events that would only be ‘happening to you’ in a regular dream. The thing is that in a regular dream, your mind (which is an aspect of you) is still conjuring the whole scene. In a lucid dream, you know you’re doing it, and that knowledge gives you more influence. I’ve often wondered: what is the membrane that separates the two? Many spiritual traditions tell us that a similar veil exists in what we think of as waking life. It’s like a scrim thrown over consciousness that leads most people to be unaware of the fact that they exist. In plain talk, that’s a form of denial. As part of the waking-up process, I suggest you do a check-in and see if you’re denying anything important, or if there’s anything that’s persistently trying to get your attention. While the dreamy quality is cast over part of your chart, a boldly alert quality is vibrating out through your experience. But there is a third factor — a persistent sense of isolation that surfaces from time to time. That’s the wake-up call; what you might call the portal to lucidity. The deeper you enter your sense of isolation, the more you’ll be able to explore your sense of presence in and contact with the world.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Dane Rudhyar, one of the 20th century’s deep philosophers of astrology, once wrote that, “Piscean winds of destiny may impel men of vision and courage to discover many a ‘new world’, as much as they do destroy or suffocate the many who stubbornly resist change.” Neptune, god of the sea and earthquakes, is newly arrived in your sign, and the Sun is racing toward equinox. This is a good time to remind you of this connection of Pisces to inspiration, vision and bravery. I know that for years, you’ve lived with the radically alien influence of Uranus in your sign, and may not quite trust that the world has grown a little closer to being your home. That, however, is exactly what is happening now. And in addition to Neptune in your sign, you also have Chiron — a source of reassurance for the underdog and an influence that will serve as a vehicle for your visions and desires. Very little happens fast in Pisces. There’s always a process of flow, and the previous seven years of Uranus (a pushy influence) may have you feeling burned out. Fortunately you’re in a time that will help you cool the fires of your soul and proceed with patience, clarity and a healthy touch of urgency. For your birthday, I will again quote Rudhyar: “Transcendence, overcoming, piercing through illusions and false security, severance of social ties, embarking for the great adventure with utter faith and in denuded simplicity of being: all these things are to be learned in Pisces. [Humanity] is here face to face with [oneself], and with that Greater Self which [s/he] names: God.”

Schedule Update and the Pisces New Moon

Dear Friend and Reader:

This note is being sent to the main subscriber list and our product customer list, together. Reminder to horoscope subscribers that this is a ‘Wednesday night’ week; there’s just one horoscope mailing, on Wednesday evening EST. This week I’m recording some overdue birthday reports and the forthcoming Spring Report.

Planet Waves

Yesterday was the Pisces New Moon, and I wanted to make sure you had access to blog posts on that topic — An Age of Pisces and Pisces New Moon, Starring Chiron and Neptune.

As you may know, the New Moon that takes place at 5:34 pm EST on Tuesday is pretty special — the Sun and Moon are right at the midpoint of Chiron and Neptune, both newly arrived in Pisces for a long, long visit. It’s also conjunct an asteroid, Pallas Athene. I explain this in the posts above, which were written with input from our blogging team.

I correspond with many other writers, and I asked Zane Stein, author of the first book on Chiron, for his perspective. He’s one of the original Chiron pioneers (as far as I know, the first astrologer to ever see an ephemeris for Chiron). While I have your attention, here is what he said to me this morning, writing in from Australia:

New Moons mean new beginnings. They can be little beginnings or huge ones, but each month when the transiting Moon reaches the transiting Sun, a new cycle begins. The lunation influences everyone, to one degree or another, but its influence is felt the most by individuals who experience a contact from the New Moon to a personal part of the chart. For those individuals, the new beginning is something quite personal.

Planet Waves
Pisces New Moon — no houses, just signs. Look at all those planets gathered to one side of the sky, mostly in Pisces. The Sun and Moon are toward the top, in yellow and gray.

The energy of the New Moon is shaped, first of all, by the sign it is in. Today’s lunation falls in Pisces which is, positively, the energy of spiritual growth, imagination, and seeking to become one with the universe, and all of these things may be emphasized in the next few weeks following. The other side, though, is that the New Moon may force people to deal in new ways with some of the negative Piscean energy, such as illusions and delusions, as well as escapism.

When a lunation occurs very close to another body, that closeness emphasizes the effect, makes it stronger, more noticeable. And this lunation, falling at 2 Pisces 42, is conjunct Neptune (0 Pisces 41) on the one side, and Chiron (4 Pisces 59) on the other, and in fact is almost exactly on the midpoint of those two bodies. And in between the lunation and Chiron we also find one of the larger asteroids, Pallas, at 3 Pisces 14. Clearly there is much more to this than just another Pisces lunation.

Neptune has only recently entered Pisces, but it is feeling quite at home as it rules that sign. If a normal New Moon in this sign emphasizes the extremes of the two fish swimming in opposite directions (spiritual growth, for example, versus escapism), consider the conjunction with Neptune as upping the ante. The potential for spiritual growth is so much, much moreso now than any of us have ever experienced in this lifetime, but likewise the potential for self-destruction is equaly greater.

Many of you who read this may remember the last time Chiron was in Pisces (although as the old joke goes, “If you can remember the Sixties you weren’t there”). It passed through Pisces to teach us many things, but its method was to help us heal our wounds by first polarizing society so we could see just how far from whole we really were. Even if you don’t remember the Sixties you probably have read of all the ways we were pulled into two different directions. So add this to the mix, and you can easily see the polarization, which has already begun, intensifying as a result of the lunation.

Then there is Pallas. She doesn’t start fights, but if she feels a battle has begun she fights to defend her people. She also is quite adept at mapping out plans, perceiving patterns. Her part in this lunation, I fear, is to stir people to clearly draw out the battle lines.

The potential energy of this lunation is unbelievable. Pallas/Chiron can enable us to fight against anything that is blocking us from trying to heal our wounds, and linked with Neptune enable us to see a much, much larger picture than we even dreamt possible. But there will be so many, many temptations to follow other pathways…false paths that lead nowhere, false gurus that are full of lies, drugs that promise enlightenment.

One key to making this the beginning of a positive new cycle is for each person to truly believe (Pisces’ keywords include ‘I believe’) in the basic goodness of the universe, and that we are all its children, made out of the same ‘goodness’. Then ask yourself, “What inner dichotomy, what inner battle, do I need to face, and heal, to make me more whole and more at one with Spirit?”

Thank you for that perspective, Zane. Remember, whatever commentary you read from any astrologer is just that: a perspective on something with no truly objective interpretation. But interpretations can be more or less grounded, more or less trustworthy.

See you Wednesday night with the March horoscope. Note, in the introduction to the horoscope, I may be quoting some of the material you’ve read in this post. It seemed sensible to get it to you sooner rather than later.

Happy New Moon. It’s a regular Pisces Party.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

How do you write astrology in a way that others understand you? First you must understand the chart, then express it in ways that don’t rely entirely on astrological references. Metaphors, descriptions of form, color and other sensory data, and most of all, a cohesive narrative will help you relate to your readers and clients. Eric Francis, founder and editor of Planet Waves, has been developing astrology content on the Internet since its nascent days. His articles present world events as personally relevant experiences, and reveal how and why readers can participate in seemingly global changes.

In this workshop he will cover how to write astrology for novices that also breaks new ground and makes sense to those advanced in the field. We will work on the details of description, of phrasing ideas in an understandable way, what you assume your reader knows, and how to tell when you have a good idea to work with. Eric’s central idea is that the best way to ‘market’ your website is with excellent content.

If you’re going to be at UAC, come a day early and catch this workshop on May 23. It’s part of a full-day presentation being taught by Eric with Donna Woodwell. Here is the official website. Eric will also be on the AFAN media panel, which will guide astrologers in handling TV, magazine and newspaper reporters.

Eric Francis is an investigative reporter, photojournalist and essayist who has been a practicing astrologer since 1995. He’s a specialist in new planetary discoveries. He has written for many magazines and newspapers in North America, Europe and Australia, as well as for Astrology.com, StarIQ.com, Rob Brezny’s Televisionary Oracle and many other astrology websites. He’s taught astrology in England, Canada and across the United States at many conferences and events.

What’s Your (Pluto) Sign? Wait — Let Me Guess!

Dear Friend and Reader:

Twenty-twelve is going to be a big year for Pluto. You could say it’s always a big year for Pluto, but this is the year of the Uranus-Pluto square you may have heard about. It’s the aspect that’s the “sign of our times” and which is going to make the next few years feel more like the Sixties than the Sixties. What we experience won’t just be the result of Pluto alone; it will be the rare combination of Uranus and Pluto; one will activate the other and you’ll be able to hear it from outside and see it on TV and watch it go by on Twitter. Heck, you might even want to get involved.

Planet Waves
Pluto the Dog has Pluto in Cancer.

In our era of history, Pluto moves through a sign in about 14 years. At other points in its orbit, further from the Sun, it can take 22 years. Pluto signs approximate generations. They’re a little quicker than a generation, but then what’s not a little quick right now. In recent years, in part thanks to the proliferation of astrology on the Internet, celebrating one’s “Pluto tribe” has become a thing, and I’m not sure it’s a good thing but it exists and there’s nothing we can really do about it except disseminate enlightening information.

This article is an analysis of what the different Pluto signs are about. Pluto grants intensity and it has a way of focusing a phase of history. Other outer planets do that as well, but Pluto (for all of its supposed subconscious action and invisibility) has a way of standing out and dropping a lens in front of the culture, which develops over a long time.

We recently lived through Pluto in Sagittarius and man did we get it. Think: Globalism, Fundamentalism, Millennialism, Terrorism, Neoconservatism and every other ism you can name, all seizing consciousness at once. The American Taliban was born and wants direct access to your uterus or that of someone you care about. Soon, they will be including sperm cells in the census. Notably, it was during Pluto in Sagittarius that Pluto was declared ‘not a planet’, and this was purely a matter of belief rather than based on scientific fact. We’ve never even seen clear photos of the thing so how could we possibly know?

Every generation has its Pluto drama, which often shows up in the form of a vast identity crisis. Some astrologers also say that Pluto is about evolution; that is another way of saying growth. Others say that Pluto comes along and shreds the old reality and revitalizes something on a deep level. Some blame Pluto for everything that goes wrong and others for everything that goes right. This article is a survey of all of the above.

Many writers helped contribute to this piece and I am grateful for the observations that they provided. However, I take responsibility for my perceptions. I do recognize that there are some limits on what I’m proposing here in terms of being applicable across race, class and country ‘divisions’; these interpretations would probably not work well for people living in rural Sweden or South Africa, but then you never know. That said, let’s consider the basic properties of Pluto through the signs, starting with Pluto in Cancer. Anyone offended by anything I’m saying can take it up with Pluto. I am merely reporting the facts.

Planet Waves

Pluto in Cancer
(1912-1937) was the greatest generation; there will never be a greater generation and anyone who comes after them who thinks there might be is sadly mistaken. This generation was so great that Pluto did them the honor of being discovered in the sign Cancer. The Star Spangled Banner was written just for them; Francis Scott Key knew they were coming. The family is everything, except for the church, God and country. Ultimate goal was to become an Eagle Scout and work for General Motors or IBM. Still saving for their child’s Ph.D., even though their child has retired. They are ‘still there’ for them. Proud of their children even though so many refused to join the Army, and the ones that did lost the Vietnam War. It wasn’t really their fault. Eventually we’ll win another war. Still get nervous when making a long-distance telephone call. Unconsciously flip through the channels at 7 pm looking for Walter Cronkite, but after an hour, keep finding Bill O’Reilly. Patiently waiting for the next Moon landing. Still astonished that appliances no longer come with a protective dust cover, and disappointed that you cannot order one even if you’re willing to pay for it.

Planet Waves

Pluto in Leo
(1937-1956) holds both copyright and patent to the term ‘baby’ including use in Baby BoomerTM and ‘Hey, baby’. Seventy is the new 40. This generation is so liberal they’re conservative or so conservative they are complete freaks. Home of the pot-smoking, guitar-playing Republican and the vegan, puritanical Democrat who has not had a drink since 1977. Vitamin C is still the cure for everything. In their day, they didn’t change the world; they were so cool, the world changed for them. Cool is what counts. What they say is cool is what is cool until they say it isn’t cool anymore. Any music recorded after 1970 is terrible unless they say otherwise. Tea Party conservatism is the new peace and love. There are a few who I call The Redeemers who want to dust off their activist Girl Scout merit badge sash and join the Occupy movement, or get involved because they missed their chance the first time around. Once tried an open marriage, but went back to getting divorced because it was simpler. Ultimate possession is an SUV with a Greenpeace sticker on it (or a Harley). Still has original AOL address from 1998. Starts a blog just to see how many hits it’s possible to get. Ruined astrology by asking, ‘What’s your sign?’ several thousand times too many. Many now live on a steady diet of Prozac, Viagra and porno.

Planet Waves

Pluto in Virgo (1956-1971) is between the Baby BoomersTM and Gen X, not as idealistic as the Boomers and not as cynical as Gen X. This generation seems immune from OCD. Nobody would even notice if they had a bad case; obsessive hyperfocus is what you do until ADD sets in. Balance means integrating the two in a perfect mix of 12-hour-a-day productivity. Materialism is cool, as long as it’s for a practical purpose. They remain trapped in extremely well-organized cubicles, spending years developing branding and marketing campaigns. Among the first programmers of the commercial Internet, they still say the word ‘computer’ and mean it. Activists among them send around email petitions, or even start an online petition service. They’re too busy to come to the protest, but they support it in principle and watch from the 30th floor window. They will change the system from within. They’re terrified to let their kids do any of the things that they did. They had sex, drugs and rock and roll (which their children are not allowed to know about). Their kids are growing up on supervised play dates and are not allowed to go to the mall alone. Obsessed with health, these people have more vitamins in their closet than the GNC warehouse, but their daughters will get six rounds of Gardasil. Have not had sex without a condom since 1989 and take an AIDS test every year even if they haven’t done the nasty. You never know; transmission through toilet seats has not been disproved.

Planet Waves

Pluto in Libra (1971-1982), sometimes called Gen X, is deeply concerned with fairness, equality and justice, which usually means getting married and going to enough weddings to open a secondhand dress shop with their diversity of unusually colored wedding party outfits. The men finally broke down and bought a tux, or considered it seriously. Men and women are equal. Gays and straights are equal. Humans and animals are equal. Willing to take a backseat in the relationship because “I will make this relationship work!” Everyone has the right and responsibility to get married. This is the new civil rights movement. Meanwhile, Roe v. Wade is being washed out from under their feet, birth control is about to become illegal, feminism exists only in certain classes on college campuses and Guantanamo Bay is still in business, but that’s all okay as long as everyone has the right to get married — unless that means getting married to more than one person. Obsessed with perfect looks, they have never been seen with a zit, and will spend hours getting ready to go out; but it’s not for anyone else — it’s ‘just for me’. Females have never left the house without a bra plus three extra layers on. The men make excellent single dads but their daughters will all be hell on wheels.

Planet Waves

Pluto in Scorpio (1982-1995), sometimes called the Millennials, does not believe in privacy. There’s no such thing. Nothing is taboo. Lady Gaga is their hero, and they’re the only ones who understand her. They cannot be more than five minutes away from social networking, and cannot do anything without their parents knowing about it. They are comforted that mom follows their every Tweet. Will take a lower-paying job with a longer commute that allows them to check Facebook, which for them is a verb. Everything must be interactive. Not afraid of ghosts. Older members of this generation used to practice telepathy in school, till texting came along. They used to have sex, till sexting came along. Aware of the deeper, darker side of human nature, they are convinced that the world is evil, so there’s no point doing anything about it. Everything is fucked. The government is fucked. The corporations are fucked. The environment is fucked. Everyone is going to get cancer, so who cares what we do or what we eat. Sex has three settings — the purity ring, hooking up and total commitment, which they think is stupid because sex is natural and everyone is really bisexual. But sex can also kill you, so it’s better to talk about it than to actually do it (or stick to oral, which for some reason is perfectly safe). Did not go to prom; went to purity ball instead, escorted by their Pluto in Virgo father, which they knew was creepy, but whatever.

Planet Waves

Pluto in Sagittarius (1995-2008) cannot spend more than 90 seconds away from social media. These kids are okay with everything, because that’s how the world is — there’s a lot of everything so you may as well be okay with it. There’s always a reason to be optimistic and that alone can get things done. We all live in one world so we should all be able to get along, and we can change the world if we want to. They know that if you believe something, that makes it true. Everything is already spiritual so who needs religion? Expect these children to want to do middle school in Santiago or Fiji. They are the ones being trained for jobs that don’t exist yet, which may involve working alongside extraterrestrials, for which they are perfectly suited.

Toddlers with Pluto in Capricorn (2008-2023) are already planning how to undermine the structure of your household, the neighborhood association and the local municipal government, so keep all your bank records, checkbooks, etc., under lock and key, and carry the key with you at all times. For your own safety, don’t keep your money in a TARP bailout bank. Block them from reading news websites; they won’t care about porno. Don’t reveal any sensitive information. Expect a call from the daycare that they started a campaign to get the director fired. Forget about toy trucks; start saving up for a real bulldozer, excavator or maybe a wrecking ball. They will be old enough to drive and operate heavy equipment by the time they’re seven. Maybe lease them something hefty and dangerous (a front-end loader perhaps) for a few weeks for that big birthday. If they have a business plan, go with it. They will make their fortunes mining abandoned 20th century garbage dumps.

Planet Waves

Future children with Pluto in Aquarius (2023-2043) will be the first generation of humans who are fully network compatible. Genetically modified to have nanotechnology in their blood from birth, none of these children will be conceived sexually; they will be generated in fetus farms to custom specifications. Born with an IP address rather than a Social Security number, they will give new meaning to the phrase, “I’m a Mac.” It will be deeply disappointing when they are finally ‘born’ only to discover that they no longer have any rights — except to marry a cyborg, which was generously guaranteed for them decades earlier by the Pluto in Libra generation. Ultimately however, they will be against computers and revolt against their origins, and their motto will be “Opt out, log off, shut down.” This is going to piss off their parents to no end, who by that point will be waging a pointless cyber-war against some developing country that has banned Facebook and refuses to join the global effort to stop climate change.

Planet Waves

Future children with Pluto in Pisces (2043-2066) will be the first generation indistinguishable from God. Kids are already pretty close to their divine source, but this generation will surpass all limits, walking on water before they walk on land. This will be easy because they’ll spend their entire gestation dreaming of dolphins and be born with dolphin souls. They are the children of God, one with God, part of God and God is part of them. God is sex and sex is God and we’re all one, and even Republicans will learn from them. They will recite nursery rhymes about quantum field theory and take field trips in black holes. These children will exist simultaneously on several dimensions, and won’t need babysitters because they’re one with God. Whereas children of previous generations had lemonade stands, some of these children will form successful cults by the time they’re 11 years old. War will be banned in their lifetimes.

Future children with Pluto in Aries (2066-2095) will give new meaning to the term Me Generation, winning the legal right to marry themselves. They will be the second most narcissistic generation in the history of humanity. Old books by Wayne Dyer and Werner Erhard will sell for $5,000 (not inflation adjusted). They will wage a civil rights movement for the right to fight in wars, repealing the ban passed by their Pluto in Pisces predecessors. This will be the time of the Second Coming of Heracles and the reincarnation of Patton. They will become despondent and require years of therapy when they discover that the Pluto in Leo generation they admire so greatly was against war, and even managed to stop one.

Future children with Pluto in Taurus (2095-2127) will be the ones who stubbornly survive and repopulate the Earth after Pluto in Aries has come through. Sex ban will be repealed. Silent movies will come back into style. In fact, language will all but disappear, with exceptions made for semi-verbal grunting and extremely vigorous arguments, which will become an official sport. Courtship traditions will be adhered to; calling cards (the old kind, left in a basket on a table by the door) will return; Emily Post will have a revival and become a bestselling author. For 22 years nobody will dare to wear white slacks after Labor Day.

Future children with Pluto in Gemini (2127-2157) will lift ban on non-sport use of words and entirely reinvent language based on words originally known only to one pair of twins. They will go on to reinvent psychotherapy, following in the footsteps of their Pluto in Gemini forebears.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

Planet Waves

The sky is about to get wetter, which has a lot of people excited. The waning Moon is on its way to the Pisces New Moon on Tuesday (but first it spends today in Capricorn and enters Aquarius Sunday at 5:28 am EST). The Sun, after making a last-degree trine to retrograde Saturn in Libra, ingresses Pisces at about 1:18 am EST Sunday; once there, the Sun conjoins Neptune. With the Sun expressing the energy of a planet named after the god of the oceans in a mutable water sign, don’t be surprised if you find yourself awash in flowing emotions, intuition, creativity – and possibly some actual rain. Astrology can be ridiculously literal sometimes. When the Sun and Moon align for their conjunction Tuesday just before 5:35 pm EST, take the opportunity to sow (and water) any seeds for creative and spiritual growth for the coming astrological year. The Pisces New Moon is the last New Moon of this zodiac cycle; the next New Moon in Aries begins a new trip around the wheel. Since the Sun’s ingress brings it into a sextile with Jupiter in Taurus, harness the extra visioning power granted by Pisces and Neptune and actually see what you’d like to create in the next 12 months. Chiron in Pisces, which has been holding this same sextile to Jupiter, is lending focus to your powers of manifestation.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) walked out of a House committee hearing on Obama’s new contraception policies, accusing chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) of blocking female witnesses from testifying. Obama’s health care provision stipulates insurance companies must cover contraception directly for women without a co-pay, so that organizations affiliated with churches (such as hospitals founded by nuns in 1812) do not directly have to offer it to employees. Religious leaders claim their freedom of religion is being infringed upon, but what they’re actually doing is trying to compel others to follow their religion. That’s a First Amendment violation called coerced speech. Essentially the whole argument is bullshit designed to flare up moral sentiments because there’s nothing more important to worry about these days.

“I look at this panel [of witnesses], and I don’t see one single individual representing the tens of millions of women across the country who want and need insurance coverage for basic preventive health care services, including family planning,” said Maloney before walking out. Norton attempted to force a vote on seating Sandra Fluke, a law student from Georgetown University, saying the chairman was breaking committee rules. According to Issa, Fluke was “not found to be appropriate or qualified” to testify about religious liberty, claiming liberty, not contraception, was the topic of the hearing. The only female Republican on the House committee, Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (R-N.Y.), sided with Issa, claiming she finds it “so objectionable that my colleagues on the other side of the aisle would characterize this as something so narrow as being about contraception. This is a fundamental assault on one’s conscience.” Indeed, it is — but not for the reasons Buerkle claims.

In a landmark decision — the first in history — a French court ruled Monday that Monsanto is guilty of poisoning French farmer Paul Francois after failing to put adequate warnings on the product’s label. The product, Lasso, also known as Alachlor, is a chlorine-based plant killer that has been banned in the European Union since 2006. According to The (UK) Guardian, Francois said he suffered neurological problems, including memory loss, headaches and stammering, after inhaling Lasso in 2004. This is the first time that a pesticide maker has been found guilty of such a poisoning. Due to the difficulty of establishing clear links between illnesses and prolonged exposure to the chemicals, previous attempts to take action against companies like Monsanto have fallen short. The EU and its member countries now consider dangerous many of the chemicals previously used in major “crop protection” campaigns, and have since banned them. Planet Waves noted the conjunction of Ceres and Uranus on the Aries Point almost a month ago highlighting recent instances of food safety and regular people taking on corporate giants like Monsanto.

A Few Highlights from UAC 2012

Each Friday we’re highlighting something from the forthcoming United Astrology Conference in New Orleans. This is NOT an annual conference; the last one was four years ago. Planet Waves will be there covering the event and doing other fun things. One thing about UAC is that there are lot of presenters from many viewpoints. I’ve selected two sample classes to give you an idea of the different levels of work that are being done.

Let’s start with a basic class by my old friend Rick Levine, editor of StarIQ: Understanding the Planets: From Moon to Pluto. Rick is excellent at pragmatic astrology with a touch of magic. He writes, “As astrologers we learn as much as much as we can about the signs. But the signs are just one part; they are brought to life by the planets as they move around the zodiac. This lecture covers the ten planets, their basic symbolism, and how they impact our lives. Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced student, there will be many useful tidbits for all in this general overview of the planets.”

Nick Dagan Best is a popular teacher who brings a touch of stagecraft to his work, an amazing memory for detail and a knowledge of culture that rivals any well-rounded critic. One of his classes is called Time Twins. He asks, “What better way to refine the techniques and interpretive skills of personal development than to contrast two or more nativities that are very similar? Time Twins is an investigation of birth charts of famous people born within a week of each other, using transits and secondary progressions to determine distinctions between their relatively similar charts. Subjects include Miles Davis/Marilyn Monroe/Allen Ginsberg (Gemini 1926), Oscar Wilde/Arthur Rimbaud (Libra 1854), William Shatner/Leonard Nimoy (Aries 1931), Lenny Bruce/Margaret Thatcher (Libra 1925), Elizabeth Taylor/Johnny Cash (Pisces 1931) and others.”

Note to UAC Presenters: If you’re teaching a class you would like to see highlighted in this space, please reply to this edition. If you’re going to be attending the conference and would like to assist Planet Waves covering the event or staying organized, please drop me a note as well. Thank you! –efc.

Planet Waves FM returns with special guest Rick Santorum

In this week’s spectacular Welcome Back edition of Planet Waves FM, Rick Santorum appears to explain himself. Rick is a product of the centaur planets Chiron and Nessus, which are conjunct his Moon and Sun respectively.

Before I get into that, however, I describe the current Pisces sky with the Sun in late Aquarius. Charts are posted in the Daily Astrology posts on the blog; not only are there currently many planets in Pisces, there is also a spectacular alignment today that I describe. That’s Mercury conjunct Chiron and sextile Jupiter — which bridges Pisces to Taurus and is just about as perfect an expression as you can get of blending these energies — earth and water, mind and knowledge, the misty light of Pisces with the focusing agent of Chiron. I won’t say much more here — the audio tells you most of what you’ll want to know and I can reply to your queries here.

We’ve received much gratifying feedback on the 2012 annual edition, which provides readings for all 12 signs and rising signs. Here are a few of the notes that you’ve sent in. Subscribers may still purchase all 12 signs at the discounted price (12 signs for the price of three) or just get your individual sign.

“This is like you took a page from my soul and wrote it out for me to look at and remember, when I get lost, that there are breadcrumbs to knowing again. This is my first impression, that this is beautiful and accurate and poignant for us Tauruses this year. Thank you, Eric!”

“Ok were you a plant in my house when I was growing up? The Virgo audio and written parts (so far, I still have yet to listen to part 3) are EXACTLY what I have experienced. The section about sex is so true it is as though you have been privy to my innermost thoughts! How can you know these details and articulate them so well? Thank you SO much for doing what you do so perfectly. Like an intense and beautiful light in a dark room, your insights are a wonder and an inspiration.”

“I ride with great glee on the positive, hopeful, visionary challenge you present in your readings. You pour crystal-clear light into the chalice. Thank you. I have been so thirsty.”

“I just listened to Eric’s 2012 Taurus horoscope and it was AMAZING! I learned some crucial, new information about myself that is really vital to my self-healing. I am just constantly blown away not just by Eric’s ability, but also his compassion and sensitivity.”

“I am absolutely amazed and grateful at how deep you went and how accurately you managed to describe or tap into the essential Leo SELF. Some of which I have kept hidden from all except those closest to me… Much Gratitude, Appreciation and Love to you Eric.”

“This roadmap of a horoscope is phenomenal. You nailed it! I have become aware of the power I possess to change my world and use it on a daily basis. We are all powerful beings, we must acknowledge this power. And thanks to Eric’s prediction, I just might save the world (or at least my little corner of it — with lots of love to boot)!”

“I don’t know where to begin in saying thank you. Such a careful and thoughtful package of insights put together with love and craft and care. I am very grateful for this.”

The February monthly horoscope (long edition) was published Wednesday evening, Jan. 25. We also published the first edition of Moonshine Horoscope by Genevieve Hathaway. The long edition of the monthly horoscope is now on a new schedule — it will be the only Planet Waves mailing the week that it comes out, giving the Planet Waves team a chance to slow down a bit once a month. The next long edition monthly horoscope will be published the evening of Weds., Feb. 22. There will be just one issue next week, on Wednesday. There was not an Inner Space monthly horoscope for February due to an overload of work during the production of the annual edition. The next Inner Space will be published the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Planet Waves

Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. Weekly Horoscope #891. | Eric’s Zodiac Sign Descriptions

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You seem to be in a reflective mood, looking back for a change rather than looking ahead. I think this is a good idea. You’re embarking on an important review of your recent relationships, and for that matter, all of your tendencies in relationships. That calls for some ongoing awareness and introspection. One thing on your agenda is making peace with your inherently rebellious nature. While the world needs people who are capable of shaking up the status quo (and you’re certainly one of them), this won’t work so well as a policy in your personal relationships. One key to happiness in this aspect of your life is choosing people against whom you don’t have to rebel. It’s true that it can be challenging to find a balance between too much structure and not enough; you do need grounding and commitment, but lately your tendency has been to get into situations that crowd your space and your freedom. As the next few years go on, this is going to become more of an issue, so I strongly suggest you identify people who authentically honor freedom and creativity. For you, that means choosing substance over form.

Revolution. Revelation. Reality Check. has been published and is available. It is still available at the special subscriber discount price for all 12 signs, or the order price per sign. This year’s annual offers an extended written report plus 90 minutes of audio for each sign and rising sign. You will love it.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Venus is now in Aries, and this may be taking you on a quest for your lost self. Your whole life may feel like a recovery mission that has you venturing into strange or unfamiliar territory. I suggest you stay in these regions of yourself until you gain some familiarity with the environment you’re uncovering. You might have a tendency to want to move on and have things get back to normal, but normal is not what you really want, as far as I can see, or what will really serve you. In fact becoming friendly with what you might otherwise decide is downright strange would be more the way to go. It’s time to throw away all of your prior notions of ‘normal’ and ‘proper’ and habitual in place of a recognition of what is so. Be mindful of your rituals and do things differently every chance you get. Experiment with your methods of working, relating and most of all the way you take risks (or struggle to do so). You’re going to learn a lot if you do, and the information will help you make some crucial decisions shortly after your birthday.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Your current focus on your professional life is about to intensify — and you’re about to see whether your hard work has finally yielded any actual results. I have two suggestions. One is that you not only act and dress the part of success, but stand fully in the character of success. This is not merely about changing your affect; it’s about an internal shift where you orient on your goals. That said, there is a certain element of stagecraft that will come into play over the next week or so, where appearances will count for more than they usually do. You will be in a spotlight of some kind, and it’s essential that you work with this factor. It will count in both your visual appearance, the way you present yourself in spoken words and in writing, and most significantly the vibe that you put forward. Certain aspects indicate that you might be inclined to bend the truth or present two sides of a story; this is not the time to play any games at all with your integrity. Be clear and make sure there are at least two people close to you with whom you can reality check.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — With the Sun about to enter your sympathetic water sign Pisces on Sunday, there is some relief on the way, though till then I suggest you keep your focus on partnership issues, particularly where a group or organization is concerned. You may have figured out that there are too many people in your life for your comfort, and too many of them have access to you and your resources. You cannot just walk away but you can get clear in every situation where there is a need to be clear. Once the Sun changes signs, that’s your clue to spend some time away from the reservation and see what’s going on somewhere else. This will provide a change of scenery and put you into contact with people more in harmony with your nature. One advantage I’ve discovered about getting near the ocean is that it’s possible to see out to the horizon. You can look at the water and in a glance, know the conditions of the atmosphere. Whether you do this metaphorically or physically amounts to the same basic thing.

Revolution. Revelation. Reality Check. has been published and is available. It is still available at the special subscriber discount price for all 12 signs, or the order price per sign. This year’s annual offers an extended written report plus 90 minutes of audio for each sign and rising sign. You will love it.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Over the next few days, the Sun is going to work its way out of Aquarius and into Pisces. Before it does that, it will make a trine (flowing 120-degree aspect) to Saturn. This is the story of working out a relationship issue, though you’re the likely partner to come up with the idea, and it may be the solution to a problem that nobody has noticed yet. Even if it seems to arrive at one ‘last minute’ or another, it’s not too late, as long as you notice what there is to notice and put the information to work as soon as you know about it. There is a risk that you’ll tell yourself this will be worth something tomorrow, and you’ll take care of it then. But what you’re about to get is specific information for a precise purpose and time. From there you can move onto subtler matters of emotions and what it means to connect with others. Once the Sun changes signs on Sunday, the premium on clarity and honesty with yourself goes up. The Sun conjunct Neptune suggests you may be trying to deny or idealize something. Balance that out with some realism.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — There’s quite a bit of activity in your opposite sign Pisces, and with the Sun on the way that means there will be even more energy (and people) in your environment. I am sure that plenty of the opportunities seem appealing and some seem really intriguing. There’s just one little problem: if you’re in one of those moods where you don’t know what you want, then all the options and opportunities can seem meaningless — and heck you might not even notice that they exist. Thing is, most of what you have open to you now is open to you now, not another day. So I suggest you have a talk with yourself and either decide what you want, or what you’re willing to experiment with. Part of how you can find out what you want is trying something, or someone, new. Despite whatever you may be feeling, or whatever frustrations you may be feeling associated with resolving a past issue, there are people around you who have some of what you want — and if they’re not there yet they are very likely to show up soon.

Revolution. Revelation. Reality Check. has been published and is available. It is still available at the special subscriber discount price for all 12 signs, or the order price per sign. This year’s annual offers an extended written report plus 90 minutes of audio for each sign and rising sign. You will love it.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — You’ve been through a tense few weeks, and you may not be feeling any more confident or like things are heading in any better of a direction. I promise you, however, that you will be able to pull back from the edge and that you’re not being pushed into anything you cannot handle. And events over the next few days will do a lot to reassure you that you’re not as close to the edge as you thought. You’ll feel more assured once you know that, and you’ll also feel less alone. There have been several moments the past week where you felt like you didn’t quite belong on the planet, but now even in the midst of similar circumstances, you seem to be aligning more closely with a source of nourishment. Also I would remind you — and you soon may discover — that you’re not alone in any way. But this will be more obvious over the next few days, as the Sun finishes its run through Aquarius and opens a few doors for you. One thing to keep in mind is that not only is there no rush; you’re in an important time of completions. Take those one at a time.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Your life has presented you with many ideas and possibilities lately, though often falling short of the best possibilities actually materializing. That said, your imagination has been venturing into some daring territory and you seem to allow yourself to consider some of the saucier possibilities, at least in theory. As the Sun enters your fellow water sign Pisces over the weekend, you’ll either have opportunities to go beyond merely thinking or imagining, or you’ll feel more compelled to actually experiment. You’ve yet to discover whether what you feel in potential and what you can actually manifest will have much in common. There’s always a difference — we’re talking about two different realms, one of which is a lot more dense than the other, and where there are actual consequences of action. Just as with your imagination, it’s a good idea to open up to what you’re not expecting. That’s the one significant contact point between ‘fantasy’ and reality.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You don’t need anyone else’s approval to make a decision. You may not recognize that you’re even seeking that approval. It may come in the form of ‘thinking like someone else’ or imagining what they would do. I suggest that you think like yourself, align with your own desires and needs, and make the decision that’s right for you. There’s a good chance that someone you know won’t agree with you, but what difference does that make? That person doesn’t have to live your life. As soon as you focus on your own intentions, and get centered about what is right for you, you’ll see how little the feelings of others matter. That said, if you can discern emotions from facts (both yours and anyone else’s), you might gain some clarity based on the actual data you become aware of. It will be an excellent exercise for you to stick strictly to the observable, verifiable facts. This won’t interfere with your intuition — it will only strengthen it.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — The job of any leader is to get people working together. Humans are motivated by making money and going to war, so you might say that the job of any humane leader is to find motivations that are neither destructive nor based on greed. That’s another way of saying honoring life and what we do with it for its inherent value, which you have a gift for noticing and expressing at the moment. State the obvious both when writing and speaking. Get feedback and make sure people are onto what you’re talking about. It seems inevitable that you’ll be involved in some unusual depth or amount of written communication, and I suggest you begin any project by defining a clear strategy. The kind of writing you’re doing now is not about being inspired, though that would help. This is writing that has to work, like a sheepdog or plumber has to work. I’m not suggesting that you not use elegance or beauty, but rather that you set goals for your projects, so that you give yourself guidance and you have a way to measure whether your efforts are getting results.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Yours is the sign of groups, but you’re equally invested in one-to-one relationships. Recent developments in an intimate situation are suggesting that it’s time to get out and be among people. You may have a tendency in the opposite direction: to withdraw, close up and avoid groups. However, I think you’ll find that once you get into a wider space and meet some new people you will feel like your old self or perhaps some new self you’ve never quite met before. Meanwhile, self-esteem questions persist. I suggest that you not view this as a crisis, but rather as an opportunity for growth. If you’re experiencing doubt in any form, one logical answer to that is to seek some information that might confirm or deny whatever issue you feel up against. However, the planets strongly suggest you look for the source of the doubt itself, remembering that it may have no basis in reality. The truth is, you’re a more sensitive person than you let on, and your sensitivity is running at an all-time high. So, proceed gently and the truth will come to you.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Many factors have contributed to your having an unusually confident grip on your life, one of which has been a measure of self-reliance. Another has been an intuitive sense of belonging and purpose. Both of these point to the kind of autonomy that will be the thing to focus on as the next four weeks progress. The Sun enters your sign over the weekend, beginning with a conjunction to Neptune, also newly arrived in Pisces. Your charts indicate a powerful empathy with people around you, and you have their attention in more ways than you recognize. But attention is not what you want — focus, collaboration and a state of harmony are. Remember that your mission comes first and what others need comes second. I suggest you favor those who make themselves available and are willing to contribute positive energy and let everyone else do their thing. You are beginning what could be one of the most confident and creative years of your life, but the condition is living from the center of yourself and at the center of your world.

Moonshine Horoscope from Planet Waves

Planet Waves

Note to Readers: This week, we’re trying a new horoscope, written by my friend Genevieve Hathaway. It pertains to your Moon sign. You can look that up by casting your chart at Astro.com or Serennu.com. You may need your time of birth. The Moon changes signs every three or so days, and the closer you are to the edge of a sign the more necessary it is to know the time of your birth. For this purpose, the approximate time will do, but it’s better to cast your chart right if you’re casting it for the first time. I suggest applying these interpretations to your Sun and rising signs as well and see what they have to offer. Please let me know how you like these horoscopes. I’ve enjoyed reading them and only made minor edits. — efc

Another Note to Readers: What Is Your Moon Sign About? Since this is our first Moon sign (Moonshine!) horoscope, I thought I would add a note about what that means — and we’ll put a longer article on the next edition but here is the basic rundown. In any natal chart, there are three basic personality elements; the Sun, the Moon and the rising sign. Think of the Sun as the expressive adult ego. Think of the rising sign as the face we put on for the world, and the future self we are trying to grow into. Think of the Moon as the inner core personality, which is closely related to the child we once were, and which is closely related to the influence of mother. The Moon describes security needs, personality tendencies that seem like they will never change, and the ‘real person’ we feel like inside, that we don’t always show the world. The house, sign and aspects of the Moon tell the story of this inner person so closely related to our childhood self. Also think of the lunar placement as veiling another influence, one that is usually hidden. More next time. — efc

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries Moon — This coming month is a good time to ask the questions: Are you emotionally healthy? What does emotional wellbeing look (or feel) like for you? I’m not talking strictly about balanced feelings, but more that which you do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to ground your emotions and keep your intense, passionate emotional energy pushing out into the world in a positive, productive manner. Part of your unconscious habits, what you do without really thinking about it, is to shape your world your way. As a born initiator it’s important to come from a place where all that inner fire is harnessed. That is, for you, emotional well being. When considering your emotional health I propose you look closely at how you spend your time and note how you feel. A component of this is expressing your inner intensity and passion through your most loved activities — physical exercise and sex. Your environment also plays a factor: get enough rest, eat well and drink plenty of water so you don’t burn out. Notice how you feel after you eat different kinds of food, especially carbs, processed food, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. As you proceed this month, tone down your brash, devil-be-damned approach to life for a bit and use Virgonian precision, attention to detail, astute observation and analysis. Test, observe, connect the dots between what you do and how you feel, and then make lasting changes to your structures, approaches and routines. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus Moon — For you, February is about pleasure. I don’t just mean having a good time at a baseball game, but rather the kind of joy that resonates deep in your soul and with your higher self. This can be through a certain aspect of your work or work you would like to do, hobbies, or even activities you are curious about but have yet to label where they fit in your life. As the weeks progress you will be asked to reevaluate what gives you soul-satisfying pleasure. Part of becoming clear about which nourish you is the understanding that nourishment and pleasure are indeed important and have value. When that is true, you’ll build an emotional attachment and invest your emotional energy through thinking about it, talking about it, planning for it and doing it. Right now you may feel an expansive, seemingly endless amount of emotional energy to give to all aspects of your life, but in truth it is finite. You only have so much of yourself to give, only so much of an inner well to tap. So allocate your resources and energy wisely. Once you notice what gives you the most fulfilling and rewarding experience, prioritize that in your life. It’s about quality over quantity. So do less, and pour more of yourself and your time into that which has the highest value to you and gives you the most pleasure. Restructure where you put your energy and emotional attachment around that which energizes you, inspires you, lifts you up and helps you give back to the world. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini Moon — Family patterns and themes often shape us for much of our lives, though this is particularly true for you now. These patterns, themes and emotional processes are deeply ingrained in our subconscious — so deep we often miss them. It’s like tightly woven threads that comprise a piece of string. Far away it looks like one seamless cord, but upon close inspection you realize it’s really a bunch of threads strung so tight they seem to be one thing. For the next few months you have a unique opportunity to make headway in separating those threads that are your parents’, grandparents’ and ancestors’ emotional processes from those that are distinctly yours. Mars retrograde is about understanding the details of your emotional composition. Chiron in Pisces provides you with a fine laser to do the delicate work of separating your family’s material, passed down through the generations, from your emotional patterns. Insight and realization will be coming down your psychic pipeline regarding these themes and how they affected you growing up — and now they influence you today, when you can do something about any unhealthy patterns and habits you discover. Some of these stretch back generations. They can stop with you; you can heal this ancestral material and move forward liberated from it. This is precision work, calling for focus and attention and most significantly the willingness to go deep. You may not be able to focus on one thing at a time, but soon you’ll discover how seemingly unrelated experiences are part of the same thing. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer Moon — Children often have a hard time consciously recognizing or processing the impact their parents have on their emotional health. Adults are no different, with respect to the influences of their own parents. It can be hard to connect the dots between how our parents treated us and our current relationship to our own needs and desires. I would recommend starting with your father’s psychological legacy. What was your father’s psychological and emotional state when you were growing up? As an adult? Then, it follows — how did that affect you? When considering your father’s psychological state it’s helpful to consider the impact his mother and grandmother had on him. The key is to proceed from an open place of almost brutal honesty with yourself, separate from blame, guilt, shame, anger. Those emotions may arise. If there’s guilt or anger or you feel like blaming — that’s a clue you’re onto something and to sink into those feelings until you come out on the other side. You’ll learn something important. The Moon is all about needs and often our father’s viewpoints, themes and unhealed issues affect how we view our needs and our approach to getting them met. There is work here to be done, but it’s work that is worth doing. Once you are clear on your needs, then you can share them clearly with others, and make progress in building healthy relationships and setting healthy boundaries. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo Moon — A positive self-concept is crucial to feeling emotionally strong and secure. This month, you are getting real, tangible traction in reinventing your self-esteem, your values, your self-concept into healthier, more solid renditions. Or put it another way, if you have at times had a less than positive self-concept, you can make headway in clearing any old hang-ups in order to move forward consistently feeling good about yourself. A mirror of sorts is being held up, letting you see what is so close you can only become aware of it through its reflection. Many of these issues arising will be around abuse patterns and ‘daddy pleasing’ tendencies left over from childhood. The term ‘daddy pleasing’ refers to the unconscious or semi-conscious need to please or make happy the symbolic male authority figure. We feel this as fear or guilt or shame at the possibility of not pleasing this authority figure. There is something here about ending a karmic cycle of abuse, of healing the patterns and not propagating it for future generations. To end the cycle of abuse you must first recognize that the abuse took place, and that it influenced you. If there is no big elephant in the room regarding abuse in your life, remember these patterns can be subtle. It can be as simple as words that cut you down emotionally as a child. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo Moon — Mars began its retrograde in your Moon sign at the end of January; it is slowly moving backward this month through your Moon sign. It is a call to live each day conscious of your emotional state, which may include a good bit of anger some days. Emotions are imperfect things. They connect us to our soul, our higher self, and clue us in on some of our most important boundaries. Most important, they cue us to how we’re responding to our environment. Body-level experiences, they can’t be reasoned away or berated if they seem messy. For someone who can live in your mind so much, what you associate with your emotions often has to do with your mindset. Remember — thoughts, words and actions influence how you feel. Act, think and speak from a conscious place, honoring the power they have over your emotional state. You can see the ‘flaws’ in how you feel, or you can flip that mindset and see your strengths. You are far more perfect than you give yourself credit for. That is not a call to an inflated, unrealistic ego, but more a statement of grace. Give yourself grace to be imperfect. You are your toughest critic. Practice giving grace and acceptance to others, and it will be easier for you to apply those same principles to yourself. Grace and acceptance are your building blocks to a healthier, happier emotional state. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra Moon — The boundary between your inner emotional dimension and unconscious self is a permeable membrane. That’s to say, by accessing your feelings you’ve very close to accessing what’s going on in your ‘unconscious’ mind. Much in the way of information passes through this imaginary membrane that divides the two, and you will benefit from that right now. Over the next few months, with Mars slowly grinding backwards in Virgo, give yourself plenty of Zen time. Do less, schedule fewer commitments, give yourself plenty of time away from computers and electronics. Stop (okay, slow down a bit) sharing your life in 140 characters on Twitter and updating Facebook, and take more time to relax around people and places that nourish you. You need real relational experiences, not mere connections. You may experience some psychic tension that could manifest as a general feeling of sickness without any easy-to-pinpoint symptoms. If you feel like you are being slowly steamed inside a pressure cooker, that’s a clue to do less and let some pressure off. These are signs to slow down and do things to help you unwind. As you come into balance and find a more stable, secure and most of all private inner place, take note of what new information comes through your psyche.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio Moon — You’re not someone who can be talked into or forced to do something you don’t want to do. Desire is a motivating force for you in all that you do. If the desire piece is missing, it’s simple — you don’t do it. Desires have an emotional connection, especially for watery Scorpio Moons. You feel your desires with an all-consuming burning passion of intense emotions. Yet, these emotions do not fling you this way and that; you keep an iron fist on how you feel. Determining what you want is a process of experimentation and refinement. Experiment, and then based on the result, refine your needs and how they are met.
Then go after that and repeat the process. This month that experiment is asking what kind of relationship you desire to have with the larger public. This isn’t intellectual, it’s a gut question. How do you FEEL about your public self, that is, the one you project into groups or the community? Are you perceived accurately for who you are? Are you where you want to be? Don’t get lost in the murky and intense depths of your own emotions. Work from a clear place of observation and analysis, then adjust your life accordingly. As you continue to refine your relationship with the larger public, determining what works for you and meets your needs, see it as a work in progress that doesn’t seek perfection but rather to have greater clarity in your needs and desires. This will give you and those around you room to maneuver and explore. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius Moon — Amidst any lack of clarity, uncertainty, or confusion you may be feeling regarding yourself and your needs, let me make one point clear — you do have a place in this world. A place that involves your highest needs for freedom, curiosity and expansion of yourself to be met. I would caution against seeing any confusion or lack of security as emotional instability; rather, it’s reconnecting you with the deepest core of your being. The foundation of your emotional security is being strengthened, but first the cracks, wear and tear must be investigated before they can be repaired. As you investigate areas of emotional insecurity, proceed from a place of open receptivity to what you find. The place to find the strength and security you seek is self-acceptance: that is, authentic acceptance of who you are and what is true for you. The first person that needs to honor you and how you live your life is you. What you are rebuilding now are vast networks of emotional security that may have been tested or shattered by years of isolation. Build strong pillars of inner strength that extend deep into the ground, through the Earth, and out the other side into a different dimension. Remember, this will take time. There is no rush, only a need for steady and persistent action. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn Moon — As a Capricorn Moon, you are currently being profoundly changed by Pluto moving through your Moon sign. This is a deep, internal process ripping out emotional foundations and patterns that do not serve you, and rebuilding them to authentically support you. This process is helping you find the answer to the question of how to get your emotional needs met. Part of resolving this question is understanding what your current philosophy toward your emotions and needs is, and what philosophy would best suit you. Is your current philosophy yours or one given to you by other people? Personal philosophies speak to both values and our perception of how the world operates. The thing about a personal philosophy is it you can change it, which means changing yourself and your perception of life. As you investigate new life philosophies surrounding your emotional needs and those of the people close to you, start from a point of ‘change is possible’ or maybe even ‘change is inevitable. Life is in essence a blank slate each day, if we consciously forget the past. It may seem like for many lifetimes you’ve had to cover up who you are deep inside, but that is the past and you are creating your future one day at a time — a very different future that will be filled with people who support your emotional needs. The key is to view each day with an open mind, rather than stuck in the pattern of covering up your needs and desires. And the key to that may well be understanding the role of guilt in your life, and choosing to do something about it. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius Moon — This month marks the first month of the rest of your life. You have lived a very, very, very long time with Neptune cruising ever so slowly around the sign of your Moon. What felt like “YOU” on a deep level has gotten an overhaul. This may have felt less like an overhaul and more like a gutting of the very thing that was you. Some people may call that an identity crisis, I propose it was more of a melting of internal structures that did not serve you, followed by an identity breakthrough. That phase of your life is over. As Neptune leaves your Moon sign and enters Pisces, the experience of your personality, of being you, is going to be more tangible, clear and accessible. This manifests as a feeling of being solid, knowing what you need, clear on your emotions, and centered on your identity. It’s like before what was the very essence of you would just slide through your fingers like Jell-o every time you tried to grab hold of it, but now it’s a solid structure that you can pick up, hold and take with you. Before the prior landscape of Neptune in Aquarius gets too far away to see the details, carve out some time to take stock of what you learned and how you changed over the past 14 years. Pay particular attention to details about your relationship with your mother. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces Moon — You survived so many years in the desert with only the occasional oasis to keep you going that the new immersion in water may still feel like an oasis instead of a permanent ocean. It’s as though your inner world has been flat for the past 14 years with the occasional holographic trick of the eye where for a flash you could feel in 3D. But now your inner landscape is a prism with many angles, dimensions and colors. As you explore the new depths and dimensions of your emotional realm, you’ll have plenty of traction to proceed with intention instead of aimless floating. Explore, experiment and note what information comes up in your emotional realm. But more importantly, learn how to go inward, get what you need, and shift back into the present moment without getting lost in all the layers of your inner world. Like a crystal, your emotions contain many facets; facets that you can draw on in different situations. Get to know them now so that as this complex year progresses you have the vast amount of knowledge contained within your emotional senses at your fingertips. Remember, you don’t have to spend your life bending to the needs of others. You exist in your own right. — by Genevieve Hathaway

Neptune in Pisces: A Watershed Event

Dear Friend and Reader:

In 2008, Pluto entered Capricorn and within a matter of months, we saw the collapse of the banking system and a massive heist of public resources by different private entities. It was an event so perfectly described by Pluto in Capricorn (which lasts till 2024) that it was a little eerie. Many astrologers had been discussing the potential for various forms of systemic collapse under Pluto in Capricorn, and one happened immediately after the transit began.

Planet Waves
The world’s first underwater presidential cabinet meeting, held by Mohammed Nasheed off Irufushi Island in the Maldives in October 2009. Image is screen shot from “The Island President,” a documentary about Nasheed and his quest to call attention to global warming. As ocean levels rise, the Maldives could become geographically extinct.

Then in April 2010 when slow-moving Chiron ingressed Pisces, within 24 hours, the BP oil platform explosion and spill happened, dumping millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico for months (and the well may still be leaking). Once again, an outer planet changed signs and we saw an event that was strikingly similar to the astrology involved — Chiron, which can call attention to issues of wounding and healing, put all eyes on the ocean.

In March 2011 when Uranus made its ingress to Aries, within hours an earthquake and tsunami struck Japan, creating one of the top two worst nuclear disasters in history. Uranium, the primary fuel for nuclear reactors, is named after the planet Uranus, which has a volatile, even explosive quality at times. Aries is hot and fiery, and what happens close to the Aries Point (the first degree of Aries) can affect the world — and once again we had an effect that illustrated the astrology in a vivid way.

Astrologers are on notice: when slow-moving outer planets change signs, there may be an immediate effect. Pay attention.

Knowing that Neptune would be entering Pisces, I was on the lookout for a development at the beginning that would give us some clues about what might be up. I suspected that the rising of the oceans, involving global warming, would be an issue. Neptune is the planet of water, named for the god of the sea (and of earthquakes). Pisces is a big ocean. What happens when you put a lot of water in an ocean? The level rises — and that is exactly what’s happening due to the melting of the glaciers. It’s obvious that with Neptune in Pisces, we will be dealing with the reality and not the concept of global warming.

In a late edit to last week’s edition, which summarized the history of the past 14 years of Neptune in Aquarius, I mentioned that the global warming controversy was a kind of poster child for denial (Neptune) of science (Aquarius). An inconvenient truth that is convenient to deny, global warming may turn out to be the biggest scandal in the history of the world. Has anyone noticed that the biggest deniers are those who profit from doing so?

But not everyone has been in denial. At the head of the class has been the president of the Maldives, an island nation located just above sea level in the Indian Ocean. It’s the country with the lowest average elevation — 1.5 meters above sea level. One of the country’s outspoken politicians, Mohammed Nasheed, came home from exile in 2008 to be the first democratically elected leader of his country. Nearly 30 years of dictatorship ended with an authentic triumph for the people, and the inauguration of a progressive, intelligent president.

And Nasheed was breathing fire on the issue of global warming. The Maldives are so close to sea level that when the 2004 Indonesian earthquake and tsunami happened, most of the country (which consists of a group of islands) was submerged. That’s to say, most areas were flooded under one to three meters of water, a stark reminder of what is possible if ocean levels continue to rise.

When Nasheed took office in November 2008, he quickly brought global warming to the top of his agenda and became one of its most articulate spokesmen. He stated his intentions to have the country purchase land in India, Sri Lanka and Australia for its citizens to inhabit, saying, “We do not want to leave the Maldives, but we also do not want to be climate refugees living in tents for decades.” If the rising of the seas wasn’t stopped, his own country would become geographically extinct by 2100. He spoke at the United Nations, and he participated in a recent documentary, The Island President.

Among other methods of getting attention, in 2009 Nasheed held an underwater meeting of his cabinet in scuba gear to illustrate the point that his country was being swallowed by the ocean. (For astrology fans, this happened with many planets in Libra, and during the triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune in Aquarius.)

Then on Tuesday, just four days after Neptune entered Pisces, Nasheed was forced to resign the presidency at gunpoint. He was ousted by allies of the old dictator, who apparently wanted some of their power back, or didn’t want to face prosecution. Nasheed had just ordered the arrest of a criminal court judge who was allegedly refusing to allow corruption cases against members of the old administration to proceed. That was used as an excuse for the military and police to force him out of office.

Planet Waves
The Maldives are a nation consisting of about 1,200 islands, close to the equator in the Indian Ocean. They are on average 1.5 meters above sea level — the lowest country in the world. Image from “The Island President,” which comes out in March.

The judge who Nasheed had arrested “was the chief judge of the Criminal Court, which is one of the middle-ranking courts in the Maldives,” according to one of Nasheed’s aides, quoted on Democracy Now! “And the government had accused him of defending the former dictatorship of [Mohammed Abdul] Gayoom. There was a number of cases against former regime members for [inaudible] and corruption, and some involving hundreds of millions of dollars. And the government contended that this judge was essentially preventing those cases from ever reaching fruition.”

Yet the effect is that one of the few people in power speaking up about global warming and rising sea levels was taken out of commission. As of press time, an arrest warrant had been issued for him. Many fear that he will be imprisoned, and his adversaries have stated that’s their goal. Despite this, he led a street rally on Thursday. BBC has reported that there is no sign of the new government trying to carry out the arrest warrant.

Nasheed has more important plans, focused on the fate of the Earth. He used his presidency to cast the Maldives as a canary in the coal mine of global warming. Many areas of Manhattan, he’s pointed out, are only slightly higher above sea-level than his country.

And there are American scientists who agree with him. One of them is Malcolm Bowman, a professor of oceanography at SUNY Stony Brook, who said in an interview, “Looking at the city, with the setting sun behind the Williamsburg Bridge, it’s a sea of tranquility,” he said. “It’s hard to imagine the dangers lying ahead.”

Planet Waves
Severe beach erosion in the Maldives has claimed substantial amounts of coastal land. Image from “The Island President.”

He told WNYC Radio in New York that as global warming brings higher temperatures and more violent storms, flooding in parts of the city could become as routine as the heavy snows of this winter. We could even have “flood days,” the way the city now has snow days. Higher sea levels will give severe storms much more water to funnel toward the city.

“We could expect the FDR Drive to be underwater,” he told the station, referring to Manhattan’s East Side Drive. “We could expect the water lapping around Wall Street,” he said. “We could see vital infrastructure, hospitals, sewage treatment plants, communication conduits all paralyzed by flooding with seawater, which is very corrosive.” He said the city could resemble Venice in 200 years.

How would the city deal with this? Possibilities include building enormous storm surge barriers like the kind used in the Netherlands, much of which is below sea-level. The Dutch have managed to hold back the ocean successfully for many years. Or, the city could pull back from vulnerable neighborhoods, moving them to higher ground and using low-lying areas as parks and buffer zones. But given real estate values, that seems unlikely. And with half of the world’s population living within 200 km of the shore, we would have to build a lot of dykes to protect even the areas that could be protected.

All the studies in the world may not convince world leaders to take action. It’s going to take actual events, and even then, many people are too despondent or corrupt to deal with a problem this complex. And even when the proof comes in the form of an event, it can take a generation or more to get the physical infrastructure in place, such as happened after the North Sea flood of 1953. This flood affected the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Scotland.

Planet Waves
Official New York City map showing flood zones. This is an actual document, not speculative.

The flooding was caused by a high spring tide and a severe windstorm that caused a storm tide. Existing sea defenses were overwhelmed and many breached. (Appropriately enough, this happened during a Saturn-Neptune conjunction. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita happened during a Saturn-Neptune opposition, which is similar to the conjunction.)

In the Netherlands, where 9% of the country’s farmland was flooded and 1,836 people died, a flood defense system was put into place, but it wasn’t completed until 1998, nearly half a century later.

There is no doubt that Neptune is associated with floods and events involving the sea, and Neptune in Pisces certainly seems to be the image of a lot more seawater. The thing about Neptune is that it’s a slow acting influence, until the drop that spills the cup. The story of floods is always the story of what was not expected, but which was obviously coming.

One thing to keep in mind from an astrological perspective is that Chiron in Pisces is running vanguard of Neptune in Pisces. During its whole time in Pisces, Chiron will be a few years ahead of Neptune’s progress, finally leaving in 2019 (about six years before Neptune leaves Pisces). Chiron will bring sufficient warning-type events that we can have all the foresight we might need. Precaution is another story.

Speaking of Chiron, Nasheed was born in 1969 right at the end of the last run of Chiron through Pisces. His Chiron is placed in the very last degree of that sign, which is also the last degree of the zodiac. It’s theme is the self-created person.

During the Sixties, we learned that martyrdom makes the movement stronger. It was an era of assassinations: JFK, RFK, MLK, names so common we don’t even need to say them, representing people who set an indelible example of leadership. I trust that this time around, Nasheed can make his point without becoming a martyr. In less than a month, he’s about to become a movie star, as The Island President, the documentary about him, is released to select theaters.

Let’s not forget that mythic Neptune can be as placid as the ocean can be, he can be equally violent and wrathful if wronged. The tyrants who seized power might recall just a few years ago when their whole country was under water. Don’t dis Neptune, ’cause paybacks are hell.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis

Venus, newly in Aries, made a conjunction to Uranus last night/early this morning, depending on your time zone. Today that energized Venus makes a trine to Juno in Sagittarius. Also overnight Thursday to Friday, Mercury conjoined centaur Nessus in Aquarius. Saturn, which recently stationed retrograde in the last degree of Libra, is trine Pallas Athene in the last degree of Aquarius. Pallas will leave Aquarius for Pisces minutes after midnight EST on Sunday, where it will conjoin Neptune Monday. Later today (Friday) the Moon ingresses Libra at 2:54 pm EST, where it will oppose Uranus and Venus in Aries. Sunday the Moon ingresses Scorpio at 5:01 pm EST. The Aquarius Sun sextiles Eris in Aries Friday, then tomorrow squares Sedna in Taurus. Sunday the Sun makes a conjunction to Nessus. Mercury, also in Aquarius, sextiles the Galactic Center in late Sagittarius Sunday, and then on Monday makes an air trine to Saturn.

In the upside-down world of the Republican presidential primary race, candidates have taken aim against President Obama’s initiative that requires health insurance companies to pay for women’s birth control. In particular, he’s even required that religious institutions that don’t approve of birth control still make it available to their employees, who might benefit from it. (You can read more about this in Venus on the Aries Point in the News on our daily blog.)

Planet Waves
Santorum after winning the Republican primaries this week.

Here is something to consider. Republicans have come out waving the flag of the First Amendment, saying that mandating that a Catholic hospital provide access to contraception for its non-religious employees is a violation of freedom of religion.

Actually, they have it backwards: any employer bound by federal anti-discrimination laws attempting to compel its employees to follow a religion they don’t believe in would be the real violation of the First Amendment — known as compelled speech. This is is so obvious that it’s comical. Many have noticed that modern Republicanism is a religious crusade focused on sex (and little else), but few are pointing out how bizarre this is.

Meanwhile, the competition for ‘most surreal comment’ prize continues at an exciting pace. Rick Santorum, a former U.S. senator and representative from Pennsylvania, recently surged from behind, winning Minnesota, Colorado and Missouri on Tuesday. Santorum is famous for a 2003 episode in which he ignited the ire of gay rights activists when he implied a comparison between same-sex marriage and marriage based on pedophilia or bestiality. In response, sex columnist Dan Savage held a contest to coin a definition of “santorum.” The winning entry was “the frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex,” which was the top Google return for his name until recently.

Following his three-state win, Santorum took the pulpit and claimed that making birth control available was a product of, “The intolerance of the left, the intolerance of the secular ideology. It is a — it is a religion unto itself. It is just not a biblical-based religion. And it is — it is the most intolerant, just like we saw from the days of the atheists in the Soviet Union. It is completely intolerant of dissent, because they fear dissent. Why? Because the dissent comes from folks who use reason, common sense and divine revelation, and they want no part of any of those things.”

Note, this is coming from someone who in this primary race compared gay sex to people having sex with dogs, and from the same man who rebuked a college student who’d suggested people should be able to marry who they want (with regard to same-sex couples) by asking, “So anybody can marry multiple people? What about three men?” Notice that social conservatives are ahead of the curve, getting ready for when people start to speak up in favor of polyamory. That’s why they define marriage as one man and one woman.

Planet Waves
Oops, sorry — here’s the real picture of Rick Santorum, after winning a few Republican primary elections this week.

Meanwhile, multimillionaire candidate Mitt Romney is calling out established D.C. Republicans on their lavish ways with money.

“Republicans spent too much money, borrowed too much money, earmarked too much, and Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have to be held accountable. This is one of the reasons the Tea Party grew up, of course, is that people were unhappy about incumbents, people who had spent their careers in Washington borrowing, spending and earmarking. … And in this race, I’m the only guy that hasn’t spent time in Washington. And Senator Santorum and Speaker Gingrich, they are the very Republicans who acted like Democrats. And when Republicans act like Democrats, they lose.” Once again, right words in the wrong order: Democrats are the ones who have become Republicans, going along with illegal wars and tax cuts for billionaires, among other things.

Newt Gingrich raised the right’s latest favorite bogeyman and invoked the obscene false-flag tragedy of the 9/11 attacks in a transparent appeal to people’s fear in the name of creating manufacturing jobs. “You think about an Iranian nuclear weapon. You think about the dangers, to Cleveland or to Columbus or to Cincinnati or to New York. Remember what it felt like on 9/11 when 3,100 Americans were killed. Now imagine an attack where you add two zeros, and it’s 300,000 dead, maybe a half million wounded. This is a real danger. This is not science fiction. And that’s why I think it’s very important that we have the strongest-possible national security. And so, I wanted to come see how you manufacture, remind the news media and others that manufacturing in America can be the dominant system in the world.”

Apparently Newt is happy to roll up his sleeves and do some manufacturing of his own when it comes to paranoia and its exploitation. Ron Paul, on the other hand, seems to be waging a stealth campaign for the surreal comment prize, given the lack of juicy quotes form this week in a quick search. But maybe that has something to do with the fact that one of the super-PACs supporting him is headed by a supporter of the 9/11 Truth movement.

If you pay attention at all to the news (even if it’s just the articles in this issue), don’t be surprised if you find yourself empathizing with the world’s injustices — and how they manifest in your own life. When the Moon moves into Libra later today, it opposes Uranus, Venus and Ceres, which are within a few degrees of each other on the Aries Point. Activity on the Aries Point tends to raise our personal struggles onto the cultural stage in some way, and brings political issues close to home. In this case, aspects of women’s health, women’s rights, motherhood and the health of Mother Earth may all feel especially compelling to you — especially with Uranus charging up the batteries.

When the Moon shifts to Scorpio on Sunday, watch your feelings closely. You might find your sensual passions intensifying; it’s also possible that any lingering frustration with the injustices you noticed earlier in the weekend could grow into brooding. One release point could come in the form of physical/sexual pleasure. You can also explore how it feels to put your money where your mouth is — literally or figuratively — with regard to your values. Taking action even in small ways can move energy. Neptune and Chiron in early Pisces suggest creative solutions that move from imagination to tangible practice would be a great way to channel your emotions.

U.S. regulators on Thursday approved plans to build the first new nuclear power plant in more than 30 years, despite objections of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission chairman, who cited safety concerns stemming from Japan’s 2011 Fukushima disaster, Reuters reported. The NRC voted 4-1 to allow Atlanta-based Southern Co to build and operate two new nuclear power reactors at its existing Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia. The units will cost Southern and partners about $14 billion and enter service as soon as 2016 and 2017. How many solar panels could $14 billion buy?

The approval was cold comfort for nuclear industry officials who have touted a “renaissance” that has failed to materialize, undercut by high costs and the cheapest natural gas prices in about a decade. No nuclear power plants have been licensed in the United States since the partial meltdown of the reactor core of the Three Mile Island plant in Pennsylvania in 1979. After the accident, the NRC adopted more stringent safety standards, which caused construction costs for nuclear plants to skyrocket and stopped dozens of planned plants in their tracks.

Just one day after a federal appeals court ruled California’s ban on same-sex marriage (called Proposition 8, or Prop 8) to be unconstitutional, Washington State positioned itself to become the seventh state to legalize gay marriage following a vote in the State House. Washington State lawmakers approved marriage equality legislation on Wednesday — just a week after it was passed by the State Senate. Gov. Christine Gregoire is expected to sign the legislation into law next week. Meanwhile, this week’s ruling in California all but ensures that the same-sex marriage issue will go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Art of Astrological Storytelling with Eric Francis

Note to Potential Participants: This workshop will be at UAC 2012, but I will be doing a test run in New York City at 1 pm on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012, hosted by Nightlight Astrology. Write to nightlightastrology@gmail.com for more information.

Eric Francis.

Friday, Feb. 10, 2012. Weekly Horoscope #890. | Eric’s Zodiac Sign Descriptions

Aries (March 20-April 19)

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may feel challenged by a situation that feels beyond your control — particularly one involving the opinion that others hold about you. Obviously what matters more is the opinion you have of yourself, but you’re especially vulnerable to outside influences right now. It’s the kind of setup where one thing could lead to another, therefore, when any one thing points in a direction that you don’t want to go, quickly make a decision to go another way. You seem to have a particular vulnerability where the opinions of coworkers are concerned, when you’re doing your best to mind your business and do your job. I would say do one better — make a point of doing your work in the most competent and creative way possible — and really shine despite what vibes you may feel are in the air or what anyone may think or say. Very simply, that whole head-trip is meaningless. The good part is that right now, many other elements of your life are beautifully meaningful.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — There may be some vivid contrasts in what you’re feeling and what others are perceiving about you. They’re not incompatible, but they are different enough that you need to account for any potential contrast. While on the one hand you may be creatively lit up, and have an abundance of good ideas, other factors suggest you want to be extraordinarily careful where communications are concerned, particularly where anyone in a position of authority is involved. What you say matters, and you cannot take it back. Along a similar line, the quality of any idea is only as good as your ability to express it or put it into action in a useful way. This could be a genuinely fortunate time in your life, when actual opportunities are abundant. But you can take no chances on anything other than careful, honest effort, and sincere gestures to cooperate within any group environment.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — As you’ve figured out by now, most spirituality has nothing to do with spirit and most religion has nothing to do with anything Divine. The substitute or the excuse is not the reality, though there are many who would — and do — confuse the matters. You cannot afford to be confused, though at the moment it could happen easily. The most likely entry point for misunderstanding is going to be false belief, so I suggest you subject what you hear and what others try to persuade you to an extra high level of verification. This would count for anything that you find is emotionally disturbing or where you get the sensation that you’re shutting down because you’ve encountered some information. That shutdown sensation may be precisely the clue you need to know that something is simply wrong. But doing nothing about it is not a useful option. At the very least, a clear decision is called for.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — This week’s Full Moon may still have you feeling like you just got off an entire afternoon on the teacup ride. Clearly, you’ve taken a few steps to renegotiate some of the more sensitive situations in your life, yet you likely figured out how much more you have to change. One particular situation where push came to shove contains a lot of good information for you, and I suggest you do some data mining and make the most of what you learn. There is something fundamental you can discern about your own nature and that of someone close to you. We may be talking about your relationship to a group. The truly important thing to focus on is how to make sure that your values, opinions and sense of presence do not take second place, or get swallowed by, some entity seemingly larger than yourself. Yet the way to distinguish yourself is not with how ‘different’ you are, but with the power and beauty of your gradually awakening sense of self-worth.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Your relationships are in a delicate spot, and you can help yourself immensely by being the person who defuses any tension and lets any seeming insult roll off your back. This may not be easy, because you’re almost as edgy as certain people around you — almost but not exactly. This is all going to come down to communication, which means being a specialist in understanding everyone’s motives: certain individuals around you, certain dynamics as they manifest in a group, and of course keeping a pulse on your own inner currents. Here is the thing to remember — life is more flexible than you remember it being any time in the recent past. Opinions are subject to change, facts are subject to reinterpretation and any situation you may encounter has many negotiable points. What will make that flexibility available is creativity: that is, imagination, seeing the possibilities, and knowing that any problem has a solution waiting to be discovered or invented.

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — You would be wise to pull your punches over the next few days — that is to say, meet aggression with something other than aggression. This won’t be easy but it’s definitely possible. If something makes you angry, start by shifting perspectives and figure out where someone is coming from. Merely empathizing with them will have a healing effect from the outset of the discussion or encounter. You will then be less inclined to think or act in a way that is self-judgmental — which is one of the best ways to defuse tense situations. You are the one who is dealing with the inner-violence dynamic. The person you’re connecting with is working through a mix of an identity crisis and self-deception. Therefore, be honest with yourself, listen with care, and set the example that there’s another way of looking at the world. Once you actually observe and acknowledge that, the whole relationship will shift.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Mars retrograde (now through April 13) is about you turning a corner in your relationship to fear. The thing about fear is that it seems so real, yet it so rarely works out to be true. Have you ever noticed that? Here is the thing about fear that is true, in my experience: it points to an energy source. What could be creative potential is converted into something, heavily tinged by the negative elements of the imagination, and something ‘unreal’ is created. The objective your charts seem to be describing is learning how to convert fear back into something creative. This would start first with feeling the fear or inner tension, acknowledging the inherently neutral nature of energy. Then notice how you color it one way or the other; how you make it into whatever it is. Though it’s emotionally difficult, stay with the feeling a little longer than you might otherwise, so you can get to the good stuff.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — One theme of this season is discerning what you think from what is true. Thoughts are powerful in that they have the power to subsume the mind. Whether you believe in ‘manifestation’, thoughts are creative, and they can also be destructive. It’s not a coincidence that the most destructive ones are those that are not true, by which I mean, the ones that are based on fear, attack or have no basis in verifiable reality. Yet one challenge you face is discerning those thoughts from what is real for you. The easiest way to tell the difference is going to be by the results. What leads to a creative outcome was a creative thought; what leads to conflict was a destructive or deceptive thought. To use this method of discernment you’ll need to track your mental process, through the actions it leads to, and then observe what happens. Think of this as observing yourself, which is a vital skill any time, but especially with Mars traveling retrograde for the next few months.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — You need to apply effort, but a certain kind that to you might feel passive. The idea is to slip into the flow, and know when you’re there. You’re in one of the richest and most abundant creative moments for many moons — though this also has a potentially disruptive quality if you don’t ride the tiger just right. This is why I am suggesting a move-with-the-energy, no-resistance approach to what you have to do, and for engaging with the thoughts and ideas that pass through you. Definitely keep a notebook, and remember that not everything is worth acting on — but nearly everything will be worth considering, and some will be worth developing. Ideas for career development may have to wait, but it’s never too early to prepare with knowledge, strategies and most meaningfully, with a vision for what you want to do. Remember, visions develop in layers, and are combined of adding what you want and removing what you don’t want.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — I suggest you be cautious of any ideas that equate money to power. They are likely to be turned against you. You can think of money as creative potential or energy, but that is different than this thing we call power, as in the power to get people to do things, or to motivate you to action. If you’re looking for motives or inspiration, find more imaginative ones. You might think in terms of what inspires people to cooperate toward a creative goal, or any goal, for that matter. These days it seems that ideas have more energy than cash when it comes to focusing the energy of groups, and there’s certainly no shortage of those right now. I would note that there is a bold, new quality to what is coming through, which may seem to challenge your preference for what is tried and true. Yet it’s a fact that time marches on, and you’ve been trying to light the fires of progress for a long time.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — One of the defining characteristics of our moment is the refusal to think in terms of consequences. Notably, this is happening at a time when a lot of consequences of the past are emerging for everyone to notice. An aspect between the Sun in your birth sign and a small, potent object called Nessus, are a reminder to think your plans and desires through. Consciously consider a diversity of what-ifs. This is not for the sake of ‘worry’ but rather for the sake of considering your options based on the potential of what they might create. At the same time you’re doing this, you may be experiencing a boomerang effect of things that you initiated in the past and to which you did not devote this consideration. Now is the time to make the necessary corrections, one at a time, as you become aware of what needs to be done. Note that some will require going through layers to get to the core of the matter.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — There seem to be many hidden factors at work in your life, though the most significant, useful and creatively rich are the ones you can see, feel and hear. Certain factors in the astrology suggest that you have a line into the unseen aspects of your life, which you can navigate intuitively. Therefore, use your senses. Look and listen for opportunities, both to express yourself and to exchange with others. Most of all, feel what you’ve got: notice your resources, your potential and how much freedom you actually have to make choices. The truth is that many options are open, and your freedom is available to the extent that you can mix potential with focusing power. To get that equation right, it’s necessary to work both sides, and I suggest you experiment with one and then the other till you can put them both together. If you keep your eyes open and your mind on your priorities, that ability will come sooner rather than later.

Leo Full Moon: Thinking For Yourself

Dear Friend and Reader:

We’re on the verge of the Leo Full Moon today. At the same time, Mercury is conjunct the Sun in Aquarius. So this is an unusual and especially influential Full Moon — which may be translating to feeling like there is some extra tension in the air — as well as the opportunity to resolve it. Full Moons often have a quality of providing a release point from deadlocks or stalemates. Today one might come in the form of an especially good idea that may have been plainly obvious, but which nobody noticed.

The Full Moon is exact Tuesday at 4:54 pm EST. The chart describes looking at the world from the perspective of a child, and is a reminder to at least see the complexity that we weave around ourselves, even if we cannot do that much about it. The mere recognition of complexity is a simple idea, and it can help sort life out to its basic elements.

First, a little astrology background. A Full Moon is the opposition of the Sun and the Moon, with the Earth in the middle. At a Full Moon, the Sun and the Moon will always be in opposite signs. There’s generally a Full Moon in each sign once per year, though occasionally it will happen in the same sign two consecutive times. Because the Sun is now in Aquarius, the Full Moon is in Leo. This is an axis of the zodiac addressing matters of individuality (Leo) contrasted with group interests (Aquarius).

There’s also a planet in the mix right now — the Sun will be exactly conjunct Mercury in Aquarius. This Full Moon is therefore an alignment of the Moon, the Earth, the Sun and Mercury, all exact to the degree. That kind of rare alignment adds extra emphasis to the event, because there is a peak of the Sun-Moon cycle at the same time as a peak of the Sun-Mercury cycle. I don’t actually remember another simultaneous Full Moon with Mercury conjunct the Sun. It must have happened at some point, though this chart looks truly distinctive.

The Moon in Leo is more about heart than mind; it’s about feeling what is right — the way a child feels. And how would that be? A child’s thinking is animated mainly by one thing — curiosity. And this is the thing that is bred out of nearly all young people by the time they’re 18. What may remain in sexual curiosity is then carefully extracted and disposed of over the next few years.

Imagine the complexity of the Aquarius Sun, reflecting the innate passion and curiosity of the Leo Moon. We’ve all been here, and we’ve all seen it. Adults think in complicated ways. Kids just want to know how or why something is. Part of what adults learn from being around children is reconnecting with the curiosity they see reflected in children. The conjunction of Mercury to the Sun is a way of saying that there is still a child (as represented this time by Mercury) contained in every adult.

Thinking for yourself means thinking connected to the simple, curious, passionate desire to know. Conversely, most forms of group-think and acting like a zombie are based firmly on not wanting to know much of anything. This lunation is a reminder to connect with that kid in you who wants to know, and who (like most kids do) has a novel theory for why something is the way it is.

Often, the lack of this ingredient is why groups (including family groups) are the very thing that prevent people from thinking for themselves, or thinking at all. Remember that the family is the first group we encounter, and it sets the pattern for all the others. One thing about groups is that they often, by definition, involve sacrificing your own ideas or values for that of the collective, or what you think the collective thinks. With so much going on around us — as children or as adults — it’s easy not only to feel like we’re missing an essential part of ourselves, it’s possible to actually be missing something. The Leo Full Moon is asking us to consider the possibility that our own opinions may be quite different from those of the groups around us — and the implications.

Both the Full Moon and the Sun-Mercury conjunction represent an eruption of individuality — not the kind that has to make a fuss, but the kind that can consider existence from its own perspective, and maybe share it with someone else who may be curious.

Lovingly,

Eric Francis
