Next week’s Taurus New Moon looks simple on its surface: the Sun and Moon will not be making any squares or oppositions to major planets. Yet this chart still presents an image of great power and potential — and that’s before we even factor in that it’s a solar eclipse.

There is a strong indication that our ego-consciousness (Sun), emotions (Moon) and mental processes will all be working together with the added benefit of some deep psychic sensitivity and artistic energy, thanks to close aspects with Mercury in Taurus and Neptune in Pisces. You can expect to have a very instinctual response to anything that impacts you emotionally.

Taurus is noted for its love of sensual pleasures, beauty, material comforts and leisure — yet it is backed by strength, endurance and subterranean fire. When a Taurus wants to finish a job, it will, and often beautifully.

Now remember that this New Moon and solar eclipse is serving as a major bookend to this season’s peak astrology: the grand cardinal cross. Today — Tuesday, April 22 — we’re heading right into the peak moment for the grand cross. We’re not sure what it will mean yet. By the time the New Moon and eclipse rolls around one week from today, we may have a better idea, but this astrology will still be unfolding. For example, Mercury will be working with Pluto and Jupiter, offering optimistic yet sound judgment and the ability to change your approach from the ground up.

Consider also this note from the minor planet files: the Sun and Moon will be closely flanked by the asteroids Hephaistos and Toro — perfectly underscoring the themes of Taurus. Hephaistos was the Greek god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry and sculpture. Toro, while it was named after an astronomer’s wife, echoes the Spanish word for ‘bull’ — as well as a popular brand of garden tiller.

This suggests that this New Moon and eclipse is less about the ‘cud-chewing’ side of Taurus and more about its power to break ground and bring forth material value in your life. Eclipses are pattern-setting events. This one has the potential to do so in very tangible ways — if you’re willing to put some muscle into it, get your hands dirty, and actually use the emotional and psychic information coming your way toward the beautiful life you desire.

Full Moons are illuminating but can be stressful, as we find ourselves trying to reconcile opposing needs within ourselves, and externally in our relationships. Yet Taurus and Scorpio, opposing signs, share an affinity for material and financial security, emotional security, and the sensual/sexual realm. The two signs just approach what feels good in those areas of life differently: Taurus sometimes gets comfortable to the point of stasis in what it enjoys; Scorpio often lets extreme discomfort fuel regeneration.

Enter Nessus. A centaur planet, Nessus is bringing up some form of shadow, baggage or ancestral patterning for us to recognize and heal, related to the Taurus-Scorpio axis. Nessus speaks of patterns of sexual abuse (or its potential), and indicates we have the power to stop the proverbial buck.

In Aquarius, the abuse is societal — think of the sexual double standards in the media, rampant slut-shaming, online bullying, our culture’s obsession with political sex scandals, and any way your sexuality is used to manipulate your behavior.

Nessus in Aquarius squaring the boldly earthy, lusty, emotionally invested and biologically driven Scorpio Full Moon is pushing us to push back against the corrupted socio-sexual constructs around us. The message is: dare to step out fully in all your sex-positive, body-aware uniqueness.

This Thursday, May 9, at 8:28 pm EDT the Taurus New Moon will form an annular (not annual) solar eclipse. Although it may not be visible from where you are, astrologically this is still a powerful moment — and we’ve entered the on-ramp into that vortex already.

In today’s Moonshine horoscopes, Genevieve Hathaway has interpreted this Taurus New Moon solar eclipse for each of the 12 Moon signs. Because this week’s eclipse is a South Node eclipse — meaning that the Sun and Moon are conjunct the lunar South Node in Taurus (a calculated point) — the emphasis is on releasing what is no longer serving you (beliefs, things, relationships and especially values) to make room for what fits your life now. It’s also a time to remember and recognize the gifts and talents you have that are so second nature, you tend to take them for granted. Appreciate them by putting them to work for you.

There’s an impressive collection of planets aligned with this eclipse. Many are in Taurus, including Mars (if you allow about 5 degrees of wiggle room), Mercury, and the asteroid Pallas Athene. If you broaden your lens to look at a larger array of minor planets, it turns out there are quite a number in the four fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius) hanging out near the eclipse degree.

There are two steps to the process, but both steps require being willing to see what you’re being shown — which, in truth, are things you already know.

New Moons and eclipses may create darkness in the sky above us, but metaphorically that means you get a clearer view of what’s within, minus all the shiny, bright distractions around you. The idea is to make decisions on what truly matters; you know exactly where those things live.

I’m not referring to any kind of self-esteem crisis, rather a deep and pervasive sensation that you could not quite measure up to the vision you held for yourself and your place in the world. There has been some block that you thought you could not get around. As the Taurus New Moon takes place this week, you come into contact with the fact that this is only perception, not truth.
