For this particular Full Moon — the first after the recent eclipse series — we have the Moon at 24 Scorpio opposing the Sun at 24 Taurus. The Taurus-Scorpio axis always evokes deep sensual and sexual themes. Taurus and Scorpio are fixed signs, however, so even when the planets and aspects involved are speaking of change, there’s a visceral undercurrent of resistance to dissolve first.

Lined up with the Sun and Moon are about nine or so minor planets. Collectively they suggest that this Full Moon could be a transformational experience, particularly involving erotic energy. These minor planets also underscore themes of power dynamics, especially what we do with power and the fear that accompanies power — all facets of sexual encounters.

Yet everything described by the minor planets is present in one major aspect occurring simultaneously with the Full Moon: Venus in Aries square Pluto in Capricorn. We can boil this aspect down to: if we’re afraid of changing ‘how things have always been’ (Pluto in Capricorn), we end up being too selfish (Venus in Aries) to surrender to love and erotic energy — and that blocks us from seeing that the change required must happen within ourselves, not in ‘the other person’.

That is to say, Wednesday’s Scorpio Full Moon carries incredible potential for a deep, wet, earthy, lusty experience that leaves you feeling fundamentally different somehow. But if you want to have it, you have to be willing to let go a little.

The conjunction of the Sun and Moon (the New Moon eclipse) is flanked on either side by Mercury (still retrograde) and Saturn. It’s all clustered near the lunar North Node, a calculated point that indicates that this eclipse is happening. And it looks intense.

North Node eclipses are associated with dharma, sometimes described as the soul’s path that we’re each on Earth to activate. It’s a more challenging path than simply sticking with what is familiar and comfortable. North Node eclipses give us a portal to new, unfamiliar ground — and that can invoke fear, especially if we try to cling to what is no longer serving us.

Mercury and Saturn so close to the Sun and Moon contain a caution against getting too caught up in fear-based secretiveness, isolation or the idea of ‘limitation’. Scorpio Moons can be brooding and dark; but Mercury is also offering a more conscious awareness of how emotions and thoughts influence each other. Saturn provides the stamina to work through your feelings once you’ve acknowledged them. Feelings deserve space in which to be felt fully and used constructively for deeper understanding — but they don’t need to run the show.

Making an exact sextile to this Scorpio grouping is Mars in Virgo. Sextiles are helpful aspects, but they ask us to make some effort to access that assistance. Mars is offering very practical, hands-on, specific energy and willpower in harmony with your consciousness, sub-consciousness, reason and powers of judgment. To have will and drive harmonized with all these levels of awareness is incredibly useful, but you do have to use it deliberately though your actions.

Taking clear, precise steps toward your goals (whether regarding sex, resources including but not limited to money, and deep inner transformation) is the idea. Keep moving with it. If you’re propelling yourself with intention into the depths of Scorpio, you’ll be able to use the momentum to resurface. It’s not the same as swirling in an eddy or sinking; ‘intention’ implies a vision, and desire to grow.

It also happens to be a partial lunar eclipse — the first of three eclipses occurring over the next four weeks. Usually eclipses travel in pairs (one lunar and one solar) but every once in a while we get three.

The weeks between eclipses are pattern-setting phases, times when it often seems we can make quantum leaps in our lives. But to do that two things need to happen: we need to be willing to let go of outdated attachments to ideas, habits and sometimes even objects or relationships; and we need to have a sense of what we do want in our lives, and then put energy into those things. That means actually doing them — taking actions in line with what we say we want.

It doesn’t all have to happen at the moment of the eclipse. Get the ball rolling a couple of days before the event and keep the ball rolling for at least a few days afterwards. Ideally, you want to keep your intentions in view during the whole eclipse season — but not to the point of getting tunnel vision. Part of the specialness of eclipses and the weeks between them can be the synchronicities that occur. Synchronicities can only help propel you along if your field of vision is open enough to see them and recognize them, and you’re hanging loose enough to act on them.

With this week’s partial lunar eclipse on the Taurus-Scorpio axis, some of the stronger themes coloring the process of ‘letting go’ include: what you value, resources (including money), possessions and possessiveness, sex, relationships and allowing change. Taurus tends to resist change and likes to hold on to material things; Scorpio’s waters harbor transformation if we allow it, but it’s easy to feel intimidated by it.

Entering into the mystery of the unknown, instead of avoiding it out of fear, takes some discipline. We have that Thursday in the form of Saturn conjunct the Moon in Scorpio. Clinging to the status quo out of its comfortable familiarity will only block your ability to use this eclipse to move you along the path of your highest potential. If you can remember to allow resources to circulate, and can recognize the material things, values and relationships that no longer serve you and then let them go with a blessing, you’ll make room for greater health and happiness.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You’re working through what may initially appear as a point of tension between an old and new viewpoint. I suggest thinking of this less as something wrong, and more as an opportunity or opening to cover a lot of ground in reworking a particular belief. Our beliefs can have a lot of power to shape how we experience existence. Imagine the viewpoint you hold as the filter and the lens is the experience of being you. Imagine that the experience of being you is a lens on a camera, and the viewpoint you hold is a filter on that lens. Just like changing filters on a camera lens to get a different color or effect, when you slip on the filter of your viewpoint, how you see through that lens changes. A situation at the moment is giving you a push to re-examine the filters you use.
