You have to love yourself before you can love anyone else. Love that’s not supported by a whole lot of self-love in the emotional bank is what some people call codependency. It’s based entirely on the response of the outside world, and then ‘love’ is in essence purchased by supporting the less wholesome qualities of partners. You may have struggled with this issue in the past but I doubt you will be any time soon. Events of recent months may not have been particularly easy but you’re a smart hobbit. I would say that you learned not that you should care about yourself but rather that in truth you do.
