“As for my birth month, a detail of much interest to poets, obsessed as they are with symbolic systems of all kinds: I was not pleased, during my childhood, to have been born in November, as there wasn’t much inspiration for birthday party motifs. February children got hearts, May ones flowers, but what was there for me? A cake surrounded by withered leaves? November was a drab, dark and wet month, lacking even snow; its only noteworthy festival was Remembrance Day. But in adult life I discovered that November was, astrologically speaking, the month of sex, death and regeneration, and that November First was the Day of the Dead. It still wouldn’t have been much good for birthday parties, but it was just fine for poetry, which tends to revolve a good deal around sex and death, with regeneration optional.”
— Margaret Atwood
The current spotlight on the lopsided sexual power dynamic in Western culture (especially in the U.S.) is overdue, though that does not make it any easier for many people. Amanda Painter suggests that with a New Moon in Scorpio making interesting aspects, it seems the cosmos is asking us to consider where we go from here with the need for healing and regeneration.

(The Day of Temperament) | Scorpio Birthday Reading | All Other Signs
There’s no better symbol of a beginning than a magnificent New Moon on your birth anniversary, and that’s what you have. In many ways this year, your commitment to work, and your devotion to your health, are the central purposes and organizing principles that you will live by. From that strong and dependable purpose, love will find its way.

If you’re feeling overextended emotionally or psychically, consider bringing yourself back into yourself today. With the Scorpio New Moon, the astrological tides ebb to a natural turning point before ever so gradually flowing back outward again. You may be finding you have a lot to process, and that’s often easier to do if you dive below the choppy surface for a while. This New Moon comes with explicit symbols of regeneration and strong links to the sea. Letting yourself feel deeply can be a very important form of self-care, allowing you to resurface with the kind of understanding that comes through healing what you’ve discovered.

I do so love Margaret Atwood. My birthday was always too close to Christmas to be especially memorable; it left the rest of the year free from personal events and presents.
As an Aquarian, the Scorpio month inspires me to contemplate the deepest depths of death and the most horrific of horrors. It’s my rising sign, and therefore the side of me that I do not see but most people recognise in me. It gives me insight into the reality of a finite lifetime and the understanding that, for other people, sexuality is what life in a finite lifetime is all about.
