“There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge’.”
— Isaac Asimov

It’s possible to plan your use of language carefully and state your point diplomatically without compromising honesty or changing your essential message. Respectful attention to other people’s feelings is requisite if you want their support. Choose time, setting and wording; understand when to speak and when to listen. Then you can say what needs to be said, knowing that it will be received as well as possible.

Consider what you might have discovered recently about the history of your family or of a loved one. It may not seem especially significant, nor in the foreground of your personal past. Yet there is a specific lesson you can carry with you as we start our journey through 2017. It could well relate to how the use of your ancestral legacy in the present is your decision; how you may draw on its strengths and yet still be independently, gloriously, your own self.

This is a wonderful quote! And, so apt for our times. There’s also a cult of arrogance in our country that says “because I am smart – or more educated, more wealthy, more powerful, more spiritual – than you, you don’t know.”
I think perhaps it is that cult that provided us our election results.
