The Question of Pluto

Today, the Sun reaches the middle of earthy Virgo after about two weeks in that sign (since Aug. 22). In doing so, the Sun moves to within 120 degrees of Pluto, in an aspect astrologers call a ‘trine’. Pluto has taken nearly eight years to reach the middle of earthy Capricorn since its second ingress to that particular sign in late 2008.

len-wallick-logo

Trine aspects form between signs that share the same element (fire, earth, air or water). Sharing the same element implies a conductivity that conveys information over the wide separation of 120 degrees almost as efficiently as a conjunction (two objects sharing the same degree of the same sign).

Among other things, the Sun represents consciousness in the way most understand it: awake, alert, present, interactive. Combine that with the fact that the Sun’s subconscious complement (the Moon) is today in Scorpio and it’s a good time to consider the question of Pluto.

The reason having the Moon in Scorpio matters is that Pluto is considered to be the modern co-ruler of Scorpio (along with Mars, the classical ruler of Scorpio). Hence, the astrology implies that you are today in some way connected on both the conscious and subconscious levels to the complex nature of Pluto’s place in astrology. The timing is interesting, to say the least. That’s because the question of Pluto is coming up in the midst of a series of eclipses which have also been subject to question.

Because the Aquarius Full Moon of Aug. 18 took place just barely within Earth’s shadow, there was no readily evident darkening of the Moon. For some, that means there was no lunar eclipse at all. For those who think that way, the current series of eclipses started on Sept. 1 with a Virgo New Moon and annular solar eclipse visible in the Southern Hemisphere.

Because Pluto is not visible to the unaided eye, there are some astrologers who do not consider it a planet at all. Combine that perception with astronomers who ‘demoted’ Pluto from planet to ‘dwarf planet’ shortly before Pluto left Sagittarius to enter Capricorn, and you have an object that amounts to a highly contentious subject. Indeed, the controversy only seems to become more pronounced with the passage of time.

Now that the New Horizons spacecraft has returned close-up photos and other unprecedented information regarding Pluto, its astronomical claim to being a planet has been strengthened. In parallel, the recently concluded continuum of seven consecutive square aspects (separations of 90 degrees) from Uranus in Aries to Pluto in Capricorn, from 2012 to 2015, has only served to bolster Pluto’s legitimacy as an astrological tool.

If there is anything to astrology, today’s aspects imply that it’s time for you to have a say. After all, why not you? You are as much a part of the system we call solar as anybody else. Your life experience is as valid as that of any other. After a weekend of contemplating when the eclipse cycle started for you, it’s only fitting that you continue to claim your place in the cosmic order of things by holding forth on Pluto. Just so you may know what to look for, begin with the concept that Pluto has layers, much like consciousness itself.

The top layer has to do with Pluto’s name. The names of planets discovered by telescope cannot possibly carry the same weight of meaning as the names of classical planets, which have always been visible to human beings from our first days on Earth. Nonetheless, there is evidence that serendipity does frequently take a hand in what results from the bureaucratic and somewhat arbitrary process of naming discovered planets.

So as a first layer, you have the mythological character of Pluto, ruler of the afterlife’s shadowy realm. Not exactly glee club material, that fellow. Even so, somebody to be reckoned with inevitably.

Which leads to the next layer of Pluto’s meaning: the subject of not only death, but also two other things that are not often considered the material of polite conversation (unless, perhaps, you are a solar Scorpio): sex and taxes. In other words, Pluto manifests not only as mysteries hidden from us, but also in what we often hide from ourselves and others.

Finally, there is at least another layer, which has to do with some of the most profound natural mysteries that take place just out of sight. Two examples might be limestone converted to marble in the depths of the Earth, and a caterpillar turning into a butterfly within a chrysalis or cocoon. In other words, Pluto is something other than merely scary or the subject of denial. Pluto is also related to the miracle of metamorphosis and transformation that takes place every day, albeit in a veiled way.

Based on what’s going on in the sky right now, today would be a good opportunity to for you to unveil Pluto and make your own decisions about it. Keep in mind that you would best draw upon your experiences since late 2008 to do so, but also pay attention to what part of your immediate experience you are either compelled or unable to ignore. Don’t be scared: it’s not as though the Sun — and your consciousness — won’t move on.

Move On, Step Up

From one day to the next, you move on. You move on to take care of your needs, follow up on your plans, keep your schedule and to deal with what life brings you. You might say the same for the Sun, Moon and planets. Perhaps most of all the celestial objects, the Sun moves with you, marking the passage of time.

len-wallick-logo

That’s because the Sun brings day and light with its presence in the sky. Also, calendars and clocks are synchronized with the Sun because of how the Sun’s height in the sky corresponds to the seasons.

The Sun is additionally a primary point of reference for navigational purposes. Especially on the ocean, where no landmarks are to be found, sailors have long looked to the Sun first to figure out where on Earth they are.

The Sun’s role in astrology is similar to its practical role in your life. For astrologers, the Sun is astrology’s central organizing principle. It is true that the Moon is an indispensable complement to the Sun. So it is that the Sun and Moon are in an astrological class of their own: luminaries. It’s also true that the planets combine with the luminaries to delineate specifics and expand perspective so as to make astrology capable of correlating with life’s complexities.

Nonetheless, it is important to constantly refer back to the Sun and include it so astrology can keep up with life. Now (as we enter Labor Day weekend in the U.S.), is an especially good time to orient yourself astrologically by using the Sun.

You might first use the Sun as both a marker of time and an orienting reference to consider where you are as regards to the eclipses we are in the midst of. Specifically, instead of taking the word of somebody else, you can now evaluate for yourself whether the Sun in opposition to the Aquarius Full Moon back on Aug. 18 constituted a lunar eclipse for you.

Because the Full Moon of Aug. 18 spent less than half an hour just barely inside Earth’s shadow, the darkening of the Moon was not readily perceptible. For that reason (and in spite of the fact that the eclipse was assigned a number by astronomers) some say it did not happen. Now that you have the perspective of having been through yesterday’s Virgo conjunction of the Sun and New Moon for a solar eclipse, you can use the guidelines Eric published on Aug. 18 to decide on your own authority whether your life entered the ‘zone’ between eclipses back then or only yesterday.

Based on his erudition and experience as an astrologer, Eric noted four ‘properties’ that your life tends to take on between eclipses. First, there is what he described as a “concentration of experience.” In other words, more events packed into the same amount of time — in this case, the two-week period between a Full and New Moon (or vice-versa).

Next, those concentrated events also seem to be karmic or even predestined in some way. Third, there is a perception of discontinuity that goes with being in the eclipse zone, in that endings and beginnings are more prevalent than usual. Finally, it is more likely that the discontinuity will correspond with your facing critical transitions and decisions to a greater than normal extent.

Hopefully, you will have some discretionary time available to you over the next several days. If that is the case for you, consider the benefit of taking some of that time to, in essence, be your own astrologer. After all, it is not all that often the Sun affords such a clearly distinguished opportunity.

If you see fit to take advantage of such a rare opportunity, simply take some time away from your weekend activities to reflect on your life since Aug. 18. Did the properties of being in an eclipse zone start showing up in your life last month, or only since yesterday?

This is not a meaningless exercise. Neither is it a test. Think of it as a chance to validate and affirm your role as an active participant in the system we have named after the Sun — the solar system. Believe your perceptions, and locate yourself accordingly.

Once you have a fix on your location in relation to the Sun and Moon in eclipse, you will have taken a great step — a step up. You will have, in essence, left the ground where your life was marked by days, nights and seasons. You will have elevated your life to include the sky. That is no small thing.

In addition, you will have attained a perspective you can build on. Next week the Sun moves on to locate you in relation to a distant but demonstrably significant object that has a lot in common with the controversial Full Moon of Aug. 18 . That object would be Pluto. Even as you move on yourself, it might be to your advantage to stay tuned.

Virgo New Moon Moonshine for Sept. 1, 2016

Aries

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Nobility is often thought of as a privileged social status to which one is born. For you especially, the concept of nobility means much more. It’s a state of mind. It’s also a way of behaving. It would appear as if your sense of nobility is very strong. Even though you may not be explicitly asked to do so, the skies imply that you would be well advised to build on that particular strength in your character even more. Begin with the time-honored maxim that one should be noble in proportion to the degree one is privileged. Then, count the privileges, entitlements, blessings and powers that you have realized or exercised in recent months. Finally, raise the level of your noble conduct appropriately, so as to create a balance in how you influence your world. If you can do just that, the world will respond to leave you feeling more balanced in turn. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Taurus

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — There’s an old saying that one should gamble only what one can afford to lose. Now is a good time for you to remember that. While you have just entered a period when it is good to be optimistic, be aware of the borderline between that and recklessness. You may, however, leverage what appears to be a two-to-three-week ‘window’ of optimism currently opening for you. Do this by keeping two objective intellectual guidelines in mind to balance any undertaking of risk you have a good feeling about. First, stay constantly aware of being able not only to afford, but to contentedly accept, the consequences if the best possible outcome does not accrue. Next, be just as realistic about what you stand to gain if everything turns out exactly the way you want it to, should you literally or figuratively decide to roll the dice. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Gemini

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — There is a potential and substantial creative achievement inside of you waiting to come out. Interestingly, it is not only your inner environment that needs attention so that your creation can be realized. What you have between you and the manifestation of a masterpiece is thus a two-fold task. You might think of it as doing on one level and not doing on the other. Fortunately, there is nobody with a greater aptitude than you at managing two parallel but related strategies. To begin with, actively attend to the physical space (either home or studio) where you compose. That probably means less clutter and more air. Follow up by taking the pressure off yourself. While still holding a clear vision of your objective, relax regularly in your own way toward a state of inner peace, even temporarily, and see what flows out of its own accord. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Cancer

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Craving satisfaction? You can get it. The key is to be willing to find it in more than just one way. If you are not receiving appropriate recognition or reward for what you have already achieved, be open to starting a new chapter or journey that has the potential to provide satisfaction as part of the process, rather than as an end result. It will not be necessary for you to initiate on a grand scale. After all, satisfaction is a personal need, not a public accomplishment. For that reason alone, allow yourself to follow up on whatever piques your interest or whets your curiosity without getting invested in a particular outcome. Give yourself a chance to try and err. Explore for exploration’s sake. This is not to say that you should be aimless. What you might want to aim for, however, is a feeling more than a thing. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Leo

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You do not rule the world. Perhaps you should, but that’s not the issue for you now. At this time, it is less necessary for you to spread your influence, and more important for you to expand your appreciation of how influential you already are. If you will stop and think about it, there are small but significant recent examples of people deferring to you as never before. It is almost as if you have come of age somehow, and claimed a place among peers who were previously elders. Now, your task is to own and care for your new level of status as if it is a proud possession. Don’t abuse it. Keep it clean and polished. Display it. Stake out the ground that is now properly and duly yours so you can both stretch out within it and invite others to share it. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Virgo

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Unlike some people, you are probably not well suited to keep out of sight and exercise power from behind the scenes. It’s more becoming for you to be out front so that others can associate a face with the words that move them to action. It’s more powerful for you to shake things up by setting a clear example. To the extent that you have been recently flying below the radar (to consolidate gains, to organize after a change or just to keep out of the way), you might now want to consider coming back among us again soon. You know there are many who respect and want to hear your thoughts. More importantly, you also know the downside of leaving a vacuum either where you physically were or where you existed in the minds of others. It’s time for you to catch up with us, and us with you. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Happy Birthday, Virgo: I Got You an Eclipse for Your Reading!

Dear Reader with Virgo Sun, Rising or Moon:

This morning, Sept. 1, there was a stunning annular solar eclipse in your sign — the kind of eclipse that creates a ‘ring of fire’ (sunlight) around the Moon’s silhouette. It was visible from Madagascar and Central Africa; luckily, you didn’t have to see it in person to use this event astrologically in your life.

Libra

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Infatuation is a word and a concept for you to be aware of during the next month or so. It’s distinctly possible that somebody will become infatuated with you in the next four weeks. It is somewhat less probable (but still within the realm of possibility) that you will come to be infatuated with someone else. Either way, you should also be aware that the skies above imply your appropriate response will be to exercise a balanced mix of authentic compassion and strong boundaries. Compassion is distinguished from empathy, sympathy and other similar feelings by not being judgmental. Contrary to common opinion, boundaries are best employed not to keep others out, but to keep you functioning at your best — which is to say, within your own limits. Infatuation is no small or shallow thing. It comes from deep within. Match that depth and all will be well. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Scorpio

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Whether or not you do the right thing is often a very personal matter. Many are the decisions that remain between you and yourself. In many ways, that’s a good thing, allowing you room to make mistakes and needing only to forgive yourself and learn something from the experience should you find your choices somehow wanting. At this time, and for the foreseeable future, however, you will not be able to avoid having at least some of your judgments and decisions witnessed by those with whom you must continue to share your life in some way. It’s almost as if you are about to go through a period when you will be obliged to show how fair and wise you are capable of being. Someday, it may be the turn of those now watching to judge you. Therefore, do yourself the greatest favor possible and do unto others as you would have them do unto you. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — It would seem as though there is some mirroring going on (or about to happen) in your life. What form these reciprocal reflections take will depend on who you are. One way or another, however, you will either somehow be seeing yourself in others, or they will somehow see themselves in you. Should you begin to have such a set of experiences, remember that the reflections are most likely subjective. That is, they’ll say more about what is going on inside you (or inside the other person seeing the reflection) than with the party or parties being so perceived. Therefore, don’t assume that somebody is anything like you just because they remind you of yourself. By the same token, don’t take it too seriously if somebody else says you remind them of themselves. Rather, take any such incidents as evidence that the word ‘familiar’ implies a profound possibility of the true interrelatedness of all human beings. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Capricorn

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — By now you should at least be starting to see in yourself some of what others have seen in you over the last seven or eight years. It has undoubtedly been a long, strange trip for you during those years. You may have wondered what kept some old friends faithful in spite of your testing their loyalty. You also may have mused upon what attracted some new friends to you even when you were feeling anything but attractive. Now, the perspective of your most recent decade should finally be opening your eyes to the greater, wider worth and importance of your life. Perhaps you have been avoiding seeing it. On the other hand, you could have been earnestly seeking it. Either way, a larger truth about you is finally becoming available to you. Let that truth inspire you to take the best care of yourself that you possibly can from here on out. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Aquarius

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Unlike the deepest point in the ocean, the deepest mysteries have no bottom. One layer is peeled back only to reveal another, without end. The subject of bottomless mysteries might very well be of interest to you at this time. That’s because you are probably facing several questions or situations that have not yet resolved themselves with certainty. In addition, there is also a good chance that you will never have an answer for at least one of those questions or situations. Even so, in the absence of a sense of completion you must still go on living from day to day. How do you carry on indefinitely without a sense of closure? As you find your way through doing so, consider having faith in what works for you. When in doubt, rely on the revolutionary idea that the proof you seek lies within, unless or until you may learn otherwise. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Pisces

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Relationships with other individuals differ from those you have with groups, institutions or the world as a whole. If it’s just a question of what goes on between you and another consenting adult, the two of you are accorded a great deal of freedom. Even so, many pairs, partners and other types of couples never even think to explore that freedom. Many pairings are mediated, formed, shaped and finally determined by expectations and rules taken in from the outside. There is now the distinct possibility that at least one of your one-to-one relationships can be among the few that do things differently. Of course in order to refresh, renew or re-balance a partnership entirely from scratch requires that one of you start the conversation. If you see a chance to open negotiations aimed at creating a brave, new private world of thoroughly mutual satisfaction, start slowly and gently, but at least start. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Breathless

Somewhere around the end of WW II, Neptune assumed a separation of about 60 degrees from Pluto. That’s what astrologers call a sextile aspect. Interestingly, and significantly, Neptune and Pluto have held that same geometric relationship on the zodiac (within the degrees of tolerance called ‘orb of aspect’) ever since.

len-wallick-logo

To have any aspect remain functional for about 70 years is exceptional, even for outer planets that appear to move at a snail’s pace from our perspective here in Earth. The primary reason for that long sextile has to do with an exquisite piece of timing.

For 20 years out of each of its 248-year-long trips around the Sun, Pluto actually moves inside of Neptune’s orbit. The last time that happened was from early 1979 to early 1999. As result, during the years approaching, including, and coming out of that two-decade period, Pluto’s perceived orbital speed closely approximated that of Neptune. This time around, the timing of that period resulted in perhaps the longest continual aspect ever consciously known.

Think about it. Most people alive now have spent their entire lifetime with Neptune and Pluto in sextile. You, and nearly everybody else on Earth, have no experience living during any other relationship between those two planets. Hence, the problem. To express that problem in a phrase, you might say that a fish is not aware that it is wet.

If, like a fish, you were to live your entire life in water, you would have no other experience to compare it to. Being wet would have no meaning because being dry would be beyond what you know, or could even imagine. Unlike fish, however, human beings have culture.

Human beings long ago hit upon the idea that the world was understandable. Instead of seeing either chaos or the behavior of deities at the root of events, some influential ancient thinkers surmised that there was a perceptible order to things. It was such an important notion that the late, great Carl Sagan took it as the theme for his 20th-century television series Cosmos. You might even go so far as to say that the concept of organizing principles is the foundation of human culture.

Astrology is undeniably an ancient part of human culture. Additionally, it is indisputable that astrologers assume an underlying order in the cosmos, largely expressed through cycles and the patterns those cycles form in context with each other. We can know that Neptune and Pluto have not always been — nor will they always be — in a sextile aspect. This week we have an event to bring that knowledge home.

The solar eclipse that comes with the Virgo New Moon shortly after 5 am EDT (09:03:02 UTC) on Thursday will be in rather precise geometrical relationship to both Neptune and Pluto.

When the Sun and Moon come together to share exactly the same degree of Virgo, Neptune will be on the other side of the zodiac in Pisces, almost exactly 180 degrees away for an opposition. At the same time Pluto will be in Capricorn, nearly 120 degrees away from the merger of the Sun and Moon for an aspect called a trine. Additionally, there will be a lot of other things going on, like the Mercury retrograde that started earlier today. Even for astrologers, the situation might be perceived as complicated.

Our 12-sign Midyear Reading on forthcoming astrology, including Jupiter in Libra, is available for instant access. You can get all 12 signs for just $57, or choose your individual signs.

There is a way, however, for you to keep the astrology of this week simple. There is an organizing principle you can apply to make your life understandable. Based on the Neptune-Pluto sextile (which has served as the long-term astrological background for most, if not all, of your life), you can think of yourself as an exceptional fish.

Ordinarily, a fish out of water is a fish in trouble. Not so for you, however. Just as your lifetime has been framed by the extraordinarily long-lived sextile from Neptune to Pluto, your circumstance is implied to be something more than ordinary.

Up to now, most of us have not perceived how we have always been metaphorically ‘wet’, because we have known nothing else. Now, with this eclipse, at least some of us will get a chance to glimpse something else.

Ironically, many of us who get the chance to grasp something beyond the experience of our lives will be those who seem to be going through the biggest changes. Most of those who are secure and comfortable without a care in the world will miss out.

Therefore, if you find yourself gasping and flopping around a bit for the next couple weeks, don’t despair. If there is anything to astrology, you will be among the lucky ones who will exposed to something timeless, even immortal, and as valuable as any experience in your life. As a guideline to getting through to the other side, remember two things.

First, remember how astrology implies that cycles, not linearity, is the underlying order of the universe. By the time of the Full Moon and lunar eclipse of Sept. 16, you will almost certainly be immersed in a ‘wet’ life once again.

Next, remember an ancient wisdom that is probably integral to any culture you might name: it’s not how many breaths you take that counts, it’s how many times your breath is taken away. Don’t be afraid to be breathless. Make this special time count for you.

Simpatico

Adjoining signs tend to differ. Often the contrast is rather sharp. That’s one reason the Sun, Moon or a planet changing signs is considered to have significance. As contiguous signs go, however, Virgo and Libra exhibit at least the capacity to be relatively simpatico with one another.

len-wallick-logo

Maybe it’s because the rulers of Virgo (Mercury) and Libra (Venus) are the only two planets moving around the Sun inside Earth’s orbit. Another contributing factor could be how the mutable quality of earthy Virgo implies sympathy with the elemental air that distinguishes Libra from other cardinal signs.

Whatever the reason, the border (or cusp, as astrologers call it) between Virgo and Libra tends to feel like a wall less often than is the case with most adjacent signs. Given how there is a lot of activity developing along their boundary right now, the implicit compatibility between Virgo and Libra is a consideration when it comes to interpreting how astrological events will correlate with your inner and outer climate over the next several weeks. In fact, some of those events are about to commence.

Tomorrow, Venus will share the 28th degree of Virgo with Jupiter for an aspect astrologers call a conjunction. Then, on Monday, Venus will conjoin with Mercury in the very last degree of Virgo. Later Monday night (or early the next morning, depending on your time zone) Venus will move on to enter Libra less than 12 hours before Mercury pulls up short of the cusp, and begins its Virgo retrograde on Tuesday.

On Sept. 2, it will be Jupiter’s turn to receive a conjunction from Mercury (Mercury also conjoined Jupiter Aug. 22 in direct motion). Then, one week after its merger with Mercury in Virgo’s penultimate degree, Jupiter will follow Venus into Libra.

That’s a lot of activity taking place during a relatively short period of time, within a very narrow slice of the zodiac. In addition, the flurry of events on the Virgo-Libra cusp will be transpiring in the midst of not only Mercury’s retrograde, but also between eclipses involving the same general neighborhood.

In correspondence with all of the traffic where Virgo and Libra come together, you might well be advised to expect some changes in your external world. For example, any recent meteorological trends in your area of the world would seem to be subject to noticeable revision. The same tendency towards turnaround could also very possibly express in political, economic and social milieus.

As nearly always, the transitions taking place on the outside won’t matter as much as how you handle them on the inside. Given how the Mercury-Venus conjunction coming up will be their third and final meeting this year, you do have some previous experience that will let you know what sort of astrological weather to expect.

The first 2016 conjunction of Mercury and Venus took place in the middle of Taurus back on May 13, during Mercury’s immediately previous retrograde. After that, Venus moved on ahead while Mercury continued to backpedal. The resulting implication was a period of heart (Venus) ahead of mind (Mercury). The next get-together was when Mercury caught up with and passed Venus in the 6th degree of Leo, just over two months later (on July 16). After that, the indication was a period of mind leading the heart.

Now, with their last conjunction of 2016 coming up where Virgo (and Mercury’s direct motion) terminates, indications are that your feelings will once again be out ahead of your intellect. That’s not a bad prospect. In a world that sometimes seems heartless, allowing your heart to lead would make you the sort of leader we could all use more of. All that being said, putting your heart out there means getting involved with risk. Even the most ably compassionate leaders must balance that risk by taking care of themselves.

Fortunately, Planet Waves in general (and Eric specifically) has your back. With the innovative approach he has taken for his midyear readings (appropriately titled “Balance” — see the inset ad at right for sales links), Eric has formulated an appropriate and supportive way for you to encounter the transitional astrology now starting up.

Just as the subject of adjacent signs is coming to the fore, Eric is providing an antidote of sorts by taking the acknowledged compatibility of opposing signs as his guiding theme.

That way, regardless of whether you find the prevailing astrological climate during the remaining weeks of this season and the beginning of the next to be simpatico for you, there will be an alternative perspective available to keep you from hitting a wall. It’s the sort of parallax view that only a world-class astrologer can provide, at a time when (if there is anything to astrology at all) it is most likely to be useful.

Involvement

On the whole, it’s better to learn astrology from experience than just from a book. That’s because you, as the astrologer, are part of the process. Just as modern science has realized, the observer is necessarily and unavoidably part of what is observed.

Even so, the observer’s power to determine the nature of observations is not absolute. There would appear to be an underlying order to the universe which makes events decipherable, if not entirely predictable.

In recent generations, astrologers have come to understand that an observer’s prejudices can actually interfere with understanding the cosmos. It is especially true that human perceptions of good and bad do not apply to events in the sky. As world-renowned astrological authority Robert Hand put it for the October/November 2014 issue of The Mountain Astrologer: “There are no benefics and no malefics.” Even so, some very old biases persist, no matter how errant they may be.

Two planets still often burdened with the malefic (bad guy) label are Mars and Saturn. One way to approach the conjunction of Mars and Saturn in Sagittarius tomorrow is to for you to acknowledge your own involvement in either sustaining or overcoming ancient predilections as regards to those two objects.

You can begin by simply being aware that Mars and Saturn are briefly coming together to share the same degree of Sagittarius. Rather than bring any hand-me-down partiality to the occasion, look to flex the power of your intent by getting involved to affirm life rather than just letting things happen.

Affirming life is one demonstrable upside to Mars. It has to do with taking action so as to sustain life. Every time you act to take care of your wellbeing in response to challenges from your environment, Mars is manifesting through you.

The same can be said for any initiative aimed at helping another person to breathe easier. Additionally, either desire or decisiveness, followed by effort to attain results, serves to demonstrate what a good guy Mars can be.

Actually, it would be reasonable to say that Mars can evince in many ways, but passivity is not one of them. That’s how it is appropriate for you to reject old stories that many passively accept about Mars, and go on to create some of your own. Saturn can help, especially when in the process of merging its own formidable energies with the red planet.

Among other things, Saturn is about giving things form. While not as bright in the sky or symbolically in your face as Mars often is, the ringed planet is every bit as empowering. Even though that power is commonly realized over time, the structural quality Saturn can be exercised to bring is like a long journey in that it must begin with a single step. Tomorrow’s Sagittarius conjunction from Mars to Saturn would be an excellent time to take that step.

Therefore, even if you are not sure how far you are going or where you will end up, you would be well advised to get consciously and actively involved in some demonstrably supportive and substantial way with life and living tomorrow. Think of it as your chance to start making something more of astrology — and the world — than you have previously been told it can be. Sure beats just being along for another ride to where you would never have chosen to go on your own in the first place.

Gotta Be Good

There’s an old fable about a tribal ruler and his servant. The servant had a habit of saying “this is a good thing” no matter what happened. One day, the ruler lost a finger in an accident. When the servant said “this is a good thing” while attending to the injury, the king became so annoyed as to fire his faithful retainer on the spot.

Some months later, the king was kidnapped by a hostile tribe who intended to make him a human sacrifice to their god. When the kidnappers noticed the missing finger, however, they changed their minds rather than tender an imperfect offering to their deity.

len-wallick-logo

Instead of being sacrificed, the kidnapped ruler was returned to his own tribe alive in exchange for a ransom. It was then that the king realized the wisdom of his former servant’s perception, and the two were reunited in an even greater mutual appreciation than they had before.

This is a fable you might want to keep in mind when the Sun enters Virgo shortly before 12:39 pm EDT (16:38:24 UTC) on Monday. It’s not because the solar ingress to Virgo foretells you losing a finger, or any other incident in particular. It’s because the Sun’s annual tour of Virgo this year will begin with implications that there is something more to the moment than what is immediately evident.

You would be justified in wondering what could possibly upstage the Sun changing signs. After all, without our local star, we would have no solar system, no daylight and no life on Earth. The Sun is the ultimate point of reference for astrologers, and along with its apparent path across the sky (the ecliptic) and its luminary complement (the Moon) the Sun is the core of astrology.

Far beyond the scale of a solar system, however, there is a similar organizing principle of much greater magnitude: the galaxy. Just as with our solar system, our galaxy has a core around which all of its stars (including our Sun) move in their orbits.

So far as our ability to observe the cosmos can tell, a galaxy is the largest example of an axis, and all which a center implies. Outside the galactic level there are no perceptible points around which everything else moves in a cyclical way. In a very real way, the core of our galaxy is the ultimate symbolic expression of all that the Sun represents. That’s how awareness of the Galactic Core’s existence (and its location on the zodiac) has meaning for astrologers. That’s also how it is meaningful that humanity has only recently attained that awareness.

When you look up at the night sky with the unaided eye, every star you see is part of our galaxy. Other stars in other galaxies are too far away to be perceived without some means of magnification. It is only in the last 400 years or so that telescopes have allowed us to see farther, and it is only in the last century that we have been able to see far enough to even begin discerning other galaxies from our own.

Your awareness of all that humanity’s recently improved powers of observation have revealed means that your consciousness represents nothing less than a huge evolutionary leap in the history of our species. In other words, by benefit of simply being alive and aware now, you and your life must necessarily be included in any astrological interpretation of the Galactic Core. That’s a powerful thing. Of course, with great power comes great responsibility.

The responsibility that comes with your unprecedented awareness of the universe will be astrology’s most powerful theme on Monday. Currently, the Galactic Core is located in the 28th degree of Sagittarius. It so happens that exact degree will be repeatedly, meaningfully and precisely in aspect when the Sun enters the first degree of Virgo on Monday.

Our exciting new 12-sign Midyear Reading on forthcoming astrology, including Jupiter in Libra, is available for instant access. You can currently get all 12 signs for just $57, or choose your individual signs.

At the moment solar Virgo begins this year, the Moon will be precisely in the 28th degree of Aries, forming an aspect with the Galactic Core that astrologers call a trine. When you consider that the Moon moves around the zodiac at approximately one degree every two hours, such precision cannot be without meaning.

In addition, at the same moment of the Sun entering Virgo and the Aries Moon precisely trine the Galactic Core, Jupiter and Mercury will be sharing the 27th degree of Virgo, precisely 90 degrees away (or in “square” aspect) to the center of our galaxy.

So what does all that mean? Consider this: The Sun rules one sign: Leo. Mercury rules two signs: Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter, for its part, also rules two signs: Sagittarius and Pisces. Finally, include the Moon’s rule of Cancer and you get a picture of how nearly half of the zodiac’s 12 signs will be focused with laser-like precision on the core of our galaxy through the auspices of their planetary representatives when the Sun leaves Leo behind and enters Virgo. The implications of that picture are nothing less than profound.

Implicit to the Sun entering Virgo tomorrow is a much bigger picture that would have gone unnoticed by even the most aware of your grandparents, probably even your parents. The beginning of solar Virgo this year is an indication of your unprecedented grasp of and involvement in something going on beyond what your senses can apprehend.

Monday’s astrological scenario indicates that the light of your very consciousness (which the Sun represents) is only part of your awareness, and that you know it. It is a tableau indicating that your mind (represented by Mercury) has undeniably expanded (Jupiter) so as to raise a potential only previously dreamed of (Moon) by previous generations into common knowledge.

In other words, you and the rest of humanity have made it to a new level of human being even if you and most of the rest of us don’t know what to make of it. We cannot profess to be ignorant any more. You cannot deny that you are aware of what your eyes cannot see. You can only either change so as to manifest (mutable earth sign Virgo) what you are, or leave those of future generations to wonder how you could possibly deny your evident power and potential glory

Like it or not, you now have the power of a king — albeit an injured one — compared to previous generations. While the organizing principles of your reality are the same as ever before, the magnitude of your responsibility is undeniably as never before. It may be intimidating, frustrating and even painful to become what your ancestors did not even know was possible, but (as your faithful servant is now reminding you), this just has to be a good thing.

Full Moon Moonshine Horoscope for Aug. 18, 2016

Full Moon Moonshine Horoscope for Aug. 18, 2016, #1113 | By Len Wallick
Aries

Aries (March 20-April 19) — When you were a child, simple and unstructured playtime did more for you than you could have possibly known at the time. That’s especially true regarding play with others of your own age. Now it may be time for a refresher course more consciously taken. It’s not so much that all your hard work lately could use a little complementary balance (although that’s part of the picture). It’s just that new connections to a wider community of similarly inclined people will more likely be established outside of your usual environs of service and work, rather than within them. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Taurus

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Allow for some paradox, and let that be okay. Specifically, don’t be surprised if being away from home brings you some of the benefits you would normally expect from being cocooned at your place of residence. Therefore, if you do come across greater nourishment, healing and relaxation out in the big world compared to what you find in your own bed and kitchen, go with the flow. Avail yourself of what you find, even if it is not where you expect it. Conversely, if you also find your fortune somehow within the confines of your home sweet home, follow up and go for the gold. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Gemini

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — It is not unusual to teach what one most needs to learn. In your case, however, it’s not so simple. For the foreseeable future (which will not be all that long, really), the key to your advancement in the world will largely consist of how willing you are to be taught. There are those who are ready and able to coach you, both to your benefit and to theirs; but the best of them will not be willing to offer their services if you are not at least receptive and willing to learn. The extent to which you are now open to taking in what comes from others is the degree to which you will be able to become more than you have ever been. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Cancer

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — To be a Jack or Jill of all trades does not necessarily mean being a master of none. As a matter of fact, you may very well have become master of more than you give yourself credit for over the last six months or so. Hidden somewhere within your recently acquired versatility is likely to be at least the root, if not the fruit, of a newfound virtuosity. However, to become aware of what would appear to be latent but authentic proficiencies, you will need to share them. Therefore, if somebody asks you to do something you have never done before, consider saying ‘yes’ on faith in yourself. — by Len Wallick. Leo

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — More than most people, you know who and what you are. More often than not, your intrinsic self-awareness has had the fringe benefit of grounding you in circumstances where others lose touch, if not control. What you may not fully understand is that the rewards of your more-than-usually examined life extend beyond just stability. Included in the qualities that make you both real and realistic is a capacity to distinguish more clearly than most between being bold and being reckless. Therefore, if your current perch begins to feel a little confining, don’t be afraid to try your wings — if only just a little. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Virgo

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — It looks as though any recent brush with uncertainty is now on its way toward being resolved. To the extent that you are now able to begin settling into a new routine of work and maintenance, devote yourself to doing so. At the same time, keep two likelihoods in mind. First, as good as you have shown yourself to be at landing on your feet, it may take longer than you’d normally estimate before recent transitions cycle through to a complete (and fully determined) outcome. Keep the faith that you’ll get there. Next, don’t forget what you discovered about yourself and others between where you were, and what you now are. — by Len Wallick. Unlocking Freedom: Your 2016-17 Virgo Birthday Reading

“Your readings are soothing, grounding and remarkably spot on, especially in times like these. I very much appreciate you and your work.” — Allison

Dear Friend and Reader:

What does a Virgo do when they have resources, energy and awareness? They get to work, putting each of those things into the service of some cause or another. More than any other sign, Virgos understand the freedom offered through service — serving a higher purpose can feel like a kind of rebellion in today’s world.

Planet Waves

In your hands, it can become a key to so much more.

If you have a Virgo Sun, rising sign or Moon, that pretty much describes the concentration of energy in your sign when the Sun makes its ingress on Aug. 22.

Check it out: the Sun (conscious awareness), the lunar North Node (your higher purpose), Venus (love and receptivity), Jupiter (expansiveness and abundance) and Mercury (intellect and communication) will all be clustered in your sign, along with a couple of other points.

But what will you do with all of that energy, and how might it ripple out into the rest of your year?

Eric will offer in-depth insights soon in your 2016-17 Birthday Reading. It’s available for pre-order now at the lowest price we offer: just $19.97 for two audio segments of at least 30 minutes each, plus a video tarot reading and summary section.

Are you wondering how the Balance Midyear readings and your Virgo Birthday Reading might differ? Principally, the Balance readings have been designed to focus on how pairs of signs will be affected by Jupiter’s sign change in complementary ways.

The 2016-17 Birthday Reading, however, will take a deeper and longer-term look at how the major astrology of the next 12 months could play out for you.

“Thanks for putting your heart and soul into what you do. Without a doubt, your work and love enrich my life. Cheers!”

— Ellie

There are many variables, but one thing is certain: you hold the key to your life. Your Birthday Reading merely helps you see where the locks are, and recognize that key for what it is.

Libra

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Even if you could use a break, consider making it an entertaining (or better yet, a stimulating) respite. Whether you can see it or not, the future is about to open for you like a flower. At the very least, consider doing something that will expose you to new patterns of thinking, if not new patterns of living and relating. Don’t let the season of the year or the season of your life restrict you from either traveling or somehow resuming your education later in the year. For the next few months, however, focus on freeing your mind from previous assumptions so that (when the time comes) your body will be ready to follow. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Scorpio

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — While you may very well move in mysterious ways, it’s not really your truest nature to procrastinate. Therefore, if you have been either putting off or avoiding any decisions (especially regarding your residential environment or inner life), make it your business to get down to business now. Begin by getting clear about what you have actually been thinking while things have been hanging. In order to do so, it might very well be of immeasurable help to think out loud in the company of others whom you trust, and whose judgment you respect. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Sagittarius

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Freedom beckons. It’s probably not liberty from something or somebody on the outside. More likely the freedom now coming your way has to do with a release of tension you have been holding on the inside. It is equally possible that the release in question will necessarily be from a pattern of thinking or behavior you have identified with and maintained since you were very young. Rather than relying upon serendipity to reveal any ancient attachments now binding you, provoke yourself to find it (or them) on your own. Begin with the absurdly simple. The next time you put on shoes, begin with the other foot. Then go on to break other routines; keep at it until a light comes on. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Capricorn

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Being in service is usually a good practice. Being in servitude usually isn’t. It’s distinctly possible that you currently have something of a blind spot regarding the difference because it has to do with something you own. It may very well be the case that you are not seeing how something you own in fact owns you. For that reason, endeavor to be more than usually conscious of your possessions over the next month or so — especially any time and expense you put into either maintaining or using them. If you are not getting something out of it in proportion to what you are putting in, you may want to make some changes. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Aquarius

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Leadership comes naturally to you. Even the greatest talents, however, are ultimately no match for finely honed skills. Unfortunately, most forms of leadership training either are beneath you or are not sufficiently advanced enough to do you any good. Even so, it would be doing yourself a great deal of good if you were to keep your eyes open for either the equivalent of a graduate-level course in executive proficiency or an open command position that will force you to exceed your previous accomplishments. Whether you can see it or not, room is being made at the top, and your potential to fill it must first be realized. — by Len Wallick. For your Eric Francis horoscope this week, please see this link.

Pisces

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — There are times to think your way through a situation. There are other times when it’s more appropriate to go by feel. More than most people, you are likely to encounter both types of circumstances over the next four weeks or so. Therefore, whenever possible, respond slowly rather than react quickly. Let yourself experiment to determine whether an intellectual or emotional approach will bring about the most efficacious solution to any given problem. When in doubt, put on your thinking cap first; but don’t be afraid to discard it so you can reach deep down inside for sheer inspiration. — by Len Wallick.
