What is a “beginning” in a world of cycles and gradual shifts? Usually, what we call a beginning is something we impose artificially on a time (like New Year’s), or it’s a change we observe from the more accurate perspective of passing time itself. The second kind of beginning clearly includes the more meaningful changes (looking back, how many New Year’s resolutions can you say really improved your life?). Yet moments of invisible change happen to us even if we’re not aware they are unfolding. How would life be different if we were conscious of what was happening at the time? What if we could just make one or two extra choices to remove obstructions to progress when they were relatively easy and amazingly beneficial to get out of the way? I dare say now is such an opportunity. Certainly you feel something important is at hand, though how important you have no way to know.

Today the Sun makes a square to a minor planet called Orcus, in Virgo. Mythically, Orcus was kind of an ancient Etruscan precursor to Pluto, and the enforcer of contracts. What promises have you made to yourself that are asking to be kept? How do they factor into your ongoing process of shaping yourself? Squares signify internal tension: a signal that you need to do something actively that will integrate the two sides of the square. What is on your mind — perhaps in some kind of dual or paradoxical state — and what do you need to do to bring it into physical form? As you make that agreement with yourself tangible, it will in turn bring forth some new facet of you. This is just one of the subtle ways in which we evolve — not into a ‘better’ person, but simply who we came here to be.

We also have Saturn in Capricorn and Juno in Cancer opposing each other today. Can you give the very thing you seek to receive in a relationship? It’s a hard lesson of life to realize that we often have to give to ourselves first the emotional energy, attention and love that we hope another will show us. The weird paradox is that when we do take care of our own emotional needs first, it can open the space for the other person to meet us and share themselves more freely — though that generally happens as a fringe benefit, rather than as the primary goal. (That said, if someone is withholding to an abusive level, it can take the help of a therapist to sort that out.) Notice in particular whether this dynamic is cropping up with an authority figure, or with someone older (perhaps even parental).

Finally, Mercury in Gemini is exactly opposite Jupiter in Sagittarius today. Be sure you keep toggling back and forth between the bigger picture and the details of any situation — especially if it’s related to business dealings, planning sessions or your larger goals. There are times you have no proof and you know something is true. There are times when you have a mountain of data that may as well be a heap of compost. How do you tell the difference? You could call that intuition, but you could also call it having sensitivity to when something is authentically meaningful. One way to tell you’re on solid ground is when you have a hunch about something and also several independent sources of verification. For this to work, you must account for observer bias, so make sure you design that into your review process. Then you get to use what you know and make a decision and learn from the experience. I suggest you put your energy into making sure your data is good, and seeking out sources who are far removed from the situation in question. Yet the most significant thing your charts are telling you is to aim for a specific goal that serves both immediate and long-range needs; among other factors, these will be in harmony when you’re on the right path.

Today could involve rather tenacious-yet-adaptable thinking, as Mercury moves into a conjunction with the centaur planet Asbolus (exact tomorrow). Asbolus is often associated with issues of survival. However, Mercury is also square Neptune in Pisces today. There seems to be a caution here against becoming overly tenacious in idealizing a person or situation. If you find yourself continually adapting the story you tell yourself about them to accommodate certain shortcomings of theirs, it might be time for a reality check.

Mercury-Neptune squares are also classic astrology for confusing communication, misleading statements, and withholding information. You can do your part to mitigate this possibility by choosing your words carefully — which implies slowing your mind down enough to consider the potential to be misunderstood, and then saying what you actually mean to say. Don’t keep something back if it could be useful to someone. With Mercury also moving into an opposition with Jupiter, it’s key to continually check your perspective against the details and the bigger picture these next few days.

If there’s one pitfall to the otherwise brilliant astrology that’s blessing you right now, it involves making the choice to send clear signals. You have both Neptune and Chiron in your sign; you can express yourself as either of them or as a blend of both. Neptune is dreamy and is not exactly the deacon of firm commitment. Chiron is on mission, focused and alert, but can come off as having rough edges or something to prove. Healthy Neptune serves to cultivate a vision. You are one who harbors many secret feelings about yourself. In a sense you keep your own identity hidden from your awareness, as if it represented some kind of taboo to be conscious of who you are.
