Yogi Berra, Mercury Retrograde, and Saturday’s Eclipse

On Tuesday — the day before the equinox, during Mercury retrograde, and almost exactly between two eclipses — baseball Hall of Famer Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, at least as famous for what he said as how he played — died at the age of 90 in West Caldwell, New Jersey.

I’m going to leave the fantastic details of Berra’s life to The New York Times; but when someone so beloved for his quirky communication passes away with so much significant astrology going on, it’s worth considering his natal chart for a moment.

After all, the chart for Saturday’s Aries Full Moon and total lunar eclipse (exact at 10:50 pm EDT / 2:50 UTC Sunday) is quite focused on your communication within your relationships, and how it makes you feel about yourself. Berra (or his chart) might just have something useful to say about that.

Born May 12, 1925, in St. Louis, Missouri, at 2:00 am CST, Berra had a Taurus Sun, a Capricorn Moon and Pisces rising. (View his full chart here.) That Taurus Sun speaks to his physicality; former Yankees manager Casey Stengel reportedly once said of him, “He looks cumbersome but he’s quick as a cat.”

Yet without getting too technical, that Taurus Sun’s placement also suggests a gifted mind — contrary to what journalists decades ago tended to write about him, and contrary to the larger-than-life ‘character’ that he became in many people’s minds. Berra was sometimes derided for his humor or for being a non-intellectual. But even from a young age, he was shrewd about his contracts with teams; and pitchers praised his ability as a catcher to call pitches.

Known and loved for such backwards sayings as, “Ninety percent of the game is half mental,” and “It’s déjà vu all over again,” Berra’s death fits the theme as a Mercury retrograde event — even if he did not actually say all the things attributed to him.

A Busy Day for the Messengers

Today is a big, busy day astrologically. Much of what is happening with the planets signals just the beginning of processes that will develop over weeks, months and years. What’s great about this is that you have time to get the hang of things; to investigate and experiment; to listen carefully and apply what you learn.

Eric Francis has covered the major aspects of this unusual day in his Planet Waves FM broadcast for this week — well worth a listen. I’m not going to try and explain in-depth all of the aspects (listen to Eric’s podcast for that), but I am going to give some highlights before I get down to what really caught my attention in today’s chart.

The central event is that Saturn leaves the sex, death and money issues of Scorpio today, and brings its emphasis on authority, responsibility, foundations and boundaries to Sagittarius at 10:49 pm EDT (2:49 UTC Friday).

Broadly speaking, over the next two years, you can expect to encounter questions about your philosophical, spiritual and religious beliefs — getting down to the ‘bones’ of what really matters to you. You can be sure Planet Waves will be developing the Saturn in Sadge story as we go along.

Also today, Jupiter in Virgo opposes Neptune in Pisces (exact at 2:54 am EDT / 6:54 UTC). If recent events have not already given you this clue, make sure you’re taking a fine-toothed comb to any important documents or negotiations. Conversely, if you deal in the creative or ‘spiritual’ realms, those could be a rewarding focus for your energies — as long as you’re not getting ‘creative’ about who someone truly is.

If someone is willfully trying to deceive you, there’s only so much you can do — though due diligence in checking their facts and trusting your intuition can get you further than you might think. It’s worth the effort, especially if the stakes are high. But how often have you met someone who indicates their true nature to you, yet you ignore the message in favor of idealizing them to fit your fantasies? Or maybe someone has done this to you?

Virgo New Moon Eclipse: Movement First, Then Change

“Disease is inertia. Healing is movement. If you put the body in motion, you will change.” — Gabrielle Roth

By Amanda Painter

How often have you tried to think your way into a new state of being or belief, or tried to think yourself into feeling healed? Thoughts are amazing tools for many things in life: planning, research, analysis. But often, when it comes to fully shifting our experience of ourselves, they are only part of the process — and sometimes not even the place to start.

For example, years ago I was really struggling with hearing any kind of career calling; I was at a job that used my talents only marginally, though its grassroots focus aligned with my values.

I remember speaking to an older, wiser friend about how I had no idea what I was meant to do, no idea what would be ‘perfect’. I was afraid of getting just stuck again.

This loop of ‘I don’t know’ felt like a permanent glitch in my psyche. My friend said to me, “You can’t think yourself into knowing what will fit; you have to actually try things. They don’t have to be forever; you can always look for something else. But until you actually try the jobs that interest you, you can never know if they’re right or not.”

To heal my career-calling inertia, my stalled creativity, my fear of ‘getting stuck for the rest of my life’, I had to move out of the realm of thought. Because my thoughts about how stuck I felt were not helping me. My imagination was not even helping much, since any fantasy jobs came with a sense of being too far from my reality, and were therefore too ‘risky’. I had to move into the realm of ‘applied science’, or actually, tangibly trying things, to heal my perception of stuckness, and to heal my beliefs about creativity’s place in my life.

Hearing What the Heart Wants: Venus Stations Direct

By Amanda Painter

Venus retrograde has been the keynote astrology of (Northern Hemisphere) summer 2015. If anything astrological has marked or framed this season in any coherent way, Venus retrograde is it. Now it is winding down.

On Sunday, Sept. 6, at 4:29 am EDT (8:29 UTC), Venus stations direct in mid-Leo, after having been retrograde for the past six weeks.

While ‘Mercury retrograde’ has become a common term even in mainstream discourse, and conjures up images of tech glitches and travel SNAFUs, Venus is retrograde far less often. Its station direct may feel a little mysterious to you.

However, if you know that Venus signifies who and what you value (both intangibly and materially), how you give and receive love (your relationships), and also beauty and aesthetics, you can think back over the last six weeks to see how and when those themes have presented themselves to you. You might glean particular insight from issues, people and relationships from the past that you’ve revisited — or that seem to have revisited you.

The Pisces Full Moon and Your Power to Choose

By Amanda Painter

Our minds and our emotions work in tandem: how we happen to be feeling at the moment when we encounter a situation, person or idea can influence our thoughts about it. At the same time, our thought patterns and belief systems influence how we articulate and manage our emotions; they reflect how much power we believe we have (or do not have) over how we feel. We often have more power of choice in these matters than it seems.

Between now and the weekend, the astrology is addressing these themes quite directly through the movements of Mercury, which rules the mind, and the Moon, which rules our emotions.

First, Mercury: this fastest planet enters Libra today at 11:44 am EDT (15:44 UTC). Mercury in Libra describes balance in communication, especially in partnerships. Because of Libra’s association with justice, you may notice an increased desire to be honest and to consider all sides of an issue before making a decision.

This positive mental environment encourages interest in what others think, which is a boon for teambuilding and collaborative endeavors. The caution comes in getting so caught up in looking at an issue from every perspective that you never actually act or make a decision.

Vacillation or perfectionism is especially worth your attention since Mercury enters its pre-retrograde echo (or ‘shadow’) phase Friday. This is not a reason to freak out. But it is a reason to begin noticing your thought processes with increasing awareness as we near Mercury’s station retrograde on Sept. 17.

As for the Moon: we’re quickly approaching the Pisces Full Moon, exact at 2:35 pm EDT Saturday (18:35 UTC). This is the Moon in Pisces opposite the Sun in Virgo.

What is interesting about this chart is the planets conjunct the Sun and Moon. This includes both the traditional and modern rulers of Pisces, Jupiter and Neptune, respectively.

Reproductive Rights: More Than You Thought

Screen shot of just a small part of the Reproductive Choice comic on Robot-hugs.com, originally published at everydayfeminism.com.

Everyone knows about the pro-life/pro-choice debate; most people know there’s a fight to keep Planned Parenthood funded, against a flood of restrictive state laws and bills in recent years. But did you realize that “reproductive rights” also encompasses such things as limits based on ableism, racism, poverty, education, homophobia, transphobia, slut-shaming and medical assault?

Check out the full comic here, and broaden your view of the rights that deserve protecting (or need to be established in the first place) that go far beyond the usual categories.

Note: since this comic was designed to be part of a feminism campaign, it is obviously focused on women’s reproductive rights, including those of trans women. I’d like to hear from our male readers, too: are there any reproductive rights for you (especially if you are gay or trans) that are as marginalized or threatened? This may include adoption rights, etc.

Sun-Saturn: Joyful Responsibility and Responsible Joy?

By Amanda Painter

Esteemed astrologer Robert Hand has described squares between the Sun and Saturn with this question: “How much self-gratification do you owe yourself, and what duties and responsibilities do you owe others?” You very well may be grappling with this question, especially if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, and are only now getting around to some form of “summer vacation.”

The late-Leo Sun is square Saturn in Scorpio now, and the aspect is exact tomorrow (Friday) at 7:40 pm EDT (23:40 UTC). Chances are you’ve been feeling its influence all this week.

With the signs involved, “self-gratification” in the form of play, creativity, pursuits that hearken back to childhood, and perhaps some desire to have a bruised ego stroked may form one side of the equation. On the other side you’re likely noticing questions of financial stability or limitation; the boundaries (real or perceived) of sexual energy and sharing; and the need to see what has truly changed in those areas in the last two years (and last few months).

For many people, the very mention of responsibility, authority and limits calls to mind baggage-laden images of restrictive parents, domineering or punitive employers, and a long list of “shoulds” guaranteed to dampen one’s mood. Or it might kick up a streak of rebelliousness if you have made a habit out of defining yourself in opposition to anyone who has ever tried to tell you what to do.

None of that is much fun. In fact, it is downright energy sapping. It can even influence people to self-sabotage their own goals. If you take refuge only in self-gratification without taking any responsibility whatsoever — whether for your own emotional reactions, your desires, or the effort you need to make to get from Point A to Point B as an adult — it’s hard to get very far in life.

Same with taking responsibility for the ways you may project negativity onto others who you perceive to hold power over you. Often when we feel powerless in the face of authority, we’re actually projecting our own negative perceptions of a situation onto the authority figure we’re dealing with, rather than seeing the power we truly have or the ways we’re holding ourselves back.

As children, often we do not have much power; as adults, we can carry that child-parent dynamic with us, when it has longed ceased to serve us. So how do you deal with that if you’re facing it now? How do you find the balance between self-gratification and your adult duties and responsibilities?

Step one is to check your assumptions about the things being required of you that you don’t feel like doing. Are they really that bad/boring/wasteful/time-consuming/difficult/pointless, etc? Is there truly nothing valuable you can gain from doing it? Does it contribute to a greater whole in ways you have not thought about yet?

Another step, again suggested by Robert Hand, is to see if you can convert your sense of impatience with any restrictions into self-discipline. That sounds great — but how the heck do you do that? Last I checked, nobody had invented a self-discipline magic wand. Imagine how different the world would be if someone had.

What is ‘self-discipline’, anyway? Is it really just forcing yourself to do what you don’t want to do? Or is it more like allowing yourself to find some spark of childlike wonder, play or learning in what needs to be done — curiosity mixed with satisfaction in accomplishment?

That sounds simplistic; perhaps in some situations it is. But in researching the astrology to write this, I was reminded of this little deck of inspirational cards that used to be at my former chiropractor’s office. I forget the name of the deck and of the man who created them, but one of the cards stands out to me. It said something like:

“Do only what brings you joy. If that is not possible, find joy in all that you do.”

Again, that sounds simplistic, but I think it holds a valuable key to Sun square Saturn and this question of taking responsibility, yet enjoying life. So often, how we feel about what must be done — and getting ourselves to do it — just comes down to perspective. A perspective of opening ourselves to curiosity, learning, accomplishment and generosity goes a long way to being able to find joy in one’s duties, as well as in the activities that we do for our own pleasure.

And yes, sometimes it takes more than a blog post to get us there. Therapy is a valuable tool in getting out from under the shadowy thumb of whoever used to wield power in our lives. A reality-check conversation with your most motivated friend could help you pick that lock, too.

One final note about the Sun in Leo square Saturn in Scorpio: moving right along with the Sun as it finishes in Leo and enters Virgo Sunday is the asteroid Eros. Eros is named for the god of love and erotic energy.

This is a good time to practice taking responsibility for your own orgasm, pleasure, libido and self-love. If that isn’t the perfect merging of self-gratification, responsibility, love and joy ever, I don’t know what is.

Finding the Solar Feminine in ‘My Body’

By Amanda Painter

With Venus conjoining the Sun in Leo today, ask yourself: where do you find the solar feminine within yourself? Is it in your sense of receptivity and goddess-ness? Is it in your ability to assert yourself, female-warrior style?

Is it simply in embracing your body, reveling in its many rich senses and the fact that it is your body? Do you find it in sex or love?

Watch spoken-word poet Kelsey Warren deliver her poem “My Body” in this YouTube video (embedded above), part of the Button Poetry project. I see the poem, in part, as a love song to her bright, unconquerable inner feminine. Though on its surface, it is a proclamation of her wheelchair-bound body as perfect — despite the odds — in ways that a random, nosy stranger will never understand. She begins:

“I get a lot of questions from strangers who think that because my wheelchair puts me at a lower height, the walls surrounding my personal life must be lower too.”

After a few of the more common intrusive questions, Warren gets to a turning point in the poem: the time someone actually asked her, “So do you, like, let your partner have a side relationship so they can have normal sex every once in awhile?”

You’ll have to watch the video for the answer, and to see Warren’s solar feminine shining forth, hot enough to burn the ignorant, and triumphant enough to make the rest of us cheer with gratitude.
