Most people view New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as a time to reflect on the past year and to resolve to guide how they live their lives in new, healthier, more advantageous ways in the year to come. Astrology does not always support those changes, since the civil calendar is rather arbitrary compared to the cycles of the seasons and the rest of astrology.

This year, however, the heavens are offering us support, an extra nudge through the doorway or perhaps a challenge: the Capricorn New Moon as part of a grand cross in the cardinal signs. All New Moons signify the close of one cycle and the beginning of a new one in our lives, and they function with regularity on a level we can actually feel and work with.

Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are associated with beginnings and taking initiative, since they usher in each new season. To have a cardinal-sign New Moon on New Year’s Day should underscore the sense of new beginnings in a palpable, if subtle, way.

When you place a cardinal-sign New Moon in line with other major planets in a grand cross formation, the message that comes through is to expect to take some initiative in several intersecting areas of your life. The presence of the Uranus-Pluto square, the era-defining aspect of revolution and evolution, is closely aligned with this New Moon; think of it as taking a big leap forward.

In all, the major planets involved are Mercury in Capricorn (think first, act second); Uranus in Aries (the element of surprise); Pluto in Cap (structural changes); Mars in Libra (figuring out where you fit in the larger scenario); and Jupiter in Cancer (caring about, and caring for, all involved). The Sun and Moon conjoined are letting your consciousness and your subconscious/intuition work in harmony, as your inner world and the world around you cross this threshold together.

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You thrive on feeling driven, focused and sure of the actions you take. This week’s Capricorn New Moon may be shaking up this sense of grounding in yourself. The astrology in the sky is applying a number of tension points that could come with questioning your work life, your relationships and your home sphere. What is at the very heart of this uncertainty is the larger question of who you are and who you are growing to be. I suggest being cautious of any potentially volatile or aggressive actions or reactions. Check in with yourself a couple of times before taking action and give yourself plenty of leeway to think and rethink your course through. Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Information is shaking loose regarding a new personal philosophy you are exploring. Think of this as a new perspective guiding how you view your experiences. What you are making contact with is a pushback against ideas that go a long way into your past. These old ideas may seem immovable, though I propose that they are anything but a solid, unyielding wall. Try not to get distracted by any doubt that may arise regarding whether what you are learning is accurate or true. Gemini (May 20-June 21) — 2014 begins with a New Moon in Capricorn, pushing for a review of where you’ve been over the past year. This may come with the deep need to heal pain that has come up in 2013 and move on to 2014 from a new place. Lately, you have done a lot of work investigating the hidden recesses of your emotional space. You are now developing a new dialogue or narrative by which to describe your current life story. Talking about the pain and challenges you’ve faced as though they are still present only keeps those stories as part of your identity. As you close the door on a number of issues you’ve healed, remember you don’t need to bring them with you. You are in a unique moment where you can reinvent your identity based on who you are now. Cancer (June 21-July 22) — At the moment, home is particularly important for you. As a Cancer Moon, you carry your home wherever you go. I propose that the concept of home for you stretches far beyond the house or apartment you live in. A home is not just the place you lay your head at night, but also the physical spaces you frequent on a regular basis, such as your gym, yoga studio, work environment, neighborhood or favorite park. I suggest putting in some extra time and love tending the spaces you visit often, in all aspects of your life. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — This week I suggest taking time to consider the question: are you emotionally healthy? What does emotional wellbeing look (or feel) like for you? And what steps are you taking to maintain emotional health? Consider what you do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to ground your emotions and keep your intense, passionate energy pushing out into the world in a positive, productive manner. Emotional health requires you to act clearly in alignment with your wants and needs. This includes communicating your feelings, desires and needs to those around you. It may take some practice to know how much emotion to express and how much to reflect on and let pass.
