This Week on Planet Waves + Your Moonshine Horoscopes

The Cancer Full Moon is exact tomorrow, Jan. 15, at 11:52 pm EST. The chart is a busy one involving several of the goddesses of astrology, and like all Full Moons, this one is upping the emotional ante for interpersonal interactions. Most people view New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as a time to reflect on the past year and to resolve to guide how they live their lives in new, healthier, more advantageous ways in the year to come. Astrology does not always support those changes, since the civil calendar is rather arbitrary compared to the cycles of the seasons and the rest of astrology.

This year, however, the heavens are offering us support, an extra nudge through the doorway or perhaps a challenge: the Capricorn New Moon as part of a grand cross in the cardinal signs. All New Moons signify the close of one cycle and the beginning of a new one in our lives, and they function with regularity on a level we can actually feel and work with.

Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) are associated with beginnings and taking initiative, since they usher in each new season. To have a cardinal-sign New Moon on New Year’s Day should underscore the sense of new beginnings in a palpable, if subtle, way.

When you place a cardinal-sign New Moon in line with other major planets in a grand cross formation, the message that comes through is to expect to take some initiative in several intersecting areas of your life. The presence of the Uranus-Pluto square, the era-defining aspect of revolution and evolution, is closely aligned with this New Moon; think of it as taking a big leap forward.

In all, the major planets involved are Mercury in Capricorn (think first, act second); Uranus in Aries (the element of surprise); Pluto in Cap (structural changes); Mars in Libra (figuring out where you fit in the larger scenario); and Jupiter in Cancer (caring about, and caring for, all involved). The Sun and Moon conjoined are letting your consciousness and your subconscious/intuition work in harmony, as your inner world and the world around you cross this threshold together.

Today’s edition of Planet Waves FM, which will be posted at noon EST, looks at the Capricorn New Moon that’s exact on New Year’s Day. This unusual alignment includes a close grouping of the Sun, Moon, Mercury and Pluto, as part of a grand cross with Mars, Jupiter and Uranus. Well, not unusual — actually rare.

Eric explains the connection of this event to the upcoming April 23 version of the grand cross and the U.S. chart, and describes a few ways to turn this alignment into leverage and positive momentum in your personal life.

In the last segment he gives a news roundup from Fukushima, addresses rumors currently circulating about units 3 and 4, the Japanese secrecy law and the Japanese journalist who told the truth about the “nuclear village,” fought back against a libel suit and won.

Mars entered Libra Saturday — an energy we’re just beginning to get acquainted with, but which we’ll come to know intimately in the coming months (including through a long retrograde). It’s a complex placement for Mars, whose expression can swing the arms of Libra’s scale from one extreme to another, calling for patience and diplomacy as we relate to each other — and this year, calling for an entire Planet Waves annual edition devoted to it.

In tonight’s Planet Waves FM, Eric will return to the centaur Orius — which was gleaming out of the birth chart of Nelson Mandela and also the New Moon chart immediately prior to his death. Featuring anti-Apartheid protest songs, the program will also look carefully at the scene in Sagittarius, which is home to a truly unusual collection of slow-moving minor planets. These include Ixion, Pholus, Chariklo and Quaoar — one of the era-defining features of our current sky.

We’re also approaching the Gemini Full Moon in one week (Dec. 17). We have Genevieve Hathaway’s Moonshine horoscopes here for you, devoted to interpreting that event for all 12 Moon signs.

Also involving Libra is one of this week’s central aspects: Vesta in Libra square Pluto in Capricorn, the subject of today’s Daily Astrology column. While squares are commonly felt as inner tension, they can also involve the integration of the energies involved; in this case, total devotion and progress, ideas exemplified by our collective focus on the life and passing of Nelson Mandela.

In the background this week is an aspect offering us the emotional stability to work through some therapeutic or healing goals: Jupiter in Cancer trine Saturn in Scorpio. Monday’s Daily Astrology column explored that topic, along with Mercury’s square to Chiron and trine to Uranus (added impetus for those counseling goals, and for keeping the mind focused enough to pursue them).

Moonshine Horoscopes — Sagittarius New Moon Edition

Monday, Dec. 2, is the Sagittarius New Moon, exact just before 7:22 pm EST. (View full chart here). Genevieve Hathaway has interpreted this lunation for each of the 12 Moon signs in her horoscopes below.

The Sagittarius New Moon, which like all New Moons is a conjunction of the Sun and Moon, is taking place in early-mid Sagittarius. New Moons generally signify harmony between the conscious will (Sun) and our unconscious/intuitive/emotional selves (Moon). In Sagittarius, this takes on a particularly ‘cosmic’ or ‘spiritual big picture’ flavor.

However, this New Moon is also square Chiron (and more loosely Neptune) in Pisces, and Pallas in Virgo — making a T-square. This will translate into some tension, though the planets involved share some common ground.

Both Pallas and Chiron were warriors, strategists and advocates in mythology. Pallas gave up some of her femininity in being a warrior and defender; Chiron gave up some of his masculinity in being a peaceful warrior and healer. So while their namesake planets are polarized in opposition to each other, there’s a meeting place. One theme of this New Moon is: resolving seemingly opposing or conflicting approaches.

The sense of polarization is enhanced by the Sun and Moon conjunct the Great Attractor: a deep-space point rushing away from us as fast as it’s pulling our galaxy toward it. But if everything is actually moving in the same direction at the same time, is that truly tension if you look at it from a broader perspective?

Note that Uranus in Aries is making a fire trine (flowing energy) to the New Moon. Unseen influences on Dec. 2 might surprise you. Can you be open to them during this next lunar cycle and the Sun’s trip through Sagittarius?

Mercury in Scorpio enters new territory Wednesday for the first time since its retrograde, which ended earlier this month. It does so after having made a conjunction to Saturn, which acted like a barrier between the old and the new (as Saturn often does). Infinitely curious, Mercury in Scorpio is the image of considering everything that’s off the usual menu, and/or taboo — the perfect complement to holiday get-togethers.

Other factors this week are reminders to keep your mind on what matters and not to get obsessed over or dragged into petty discussions or debates. Remember the larger scenario, and let the facts speak for themselves. That said, where travel is concerned, the details are everything right now, particularly with large swaths of the U.S. experiencing the first winter storms. Leave yourself plenty of time, travel with cash and warm clothes, and make sure you have Plans B and C thought through.

Moonshine Horoscopes — Taurus Full Moon Edition

Sunday, Nov. 17 is the Taurus Full Moon, exact at 10:16 am EST — and exactly square the centaur planet Nessus in Aquarius. (View full chart here). Genevieve Hathaway has interpreted this lunation for each of the 12 Moon signs in her horoscopes below.

Full Moons are illuminating but can be stressful, as we find ourselves trying to reconcile opposing needs within ourselves, and externally in our relationships. Yet Taurus and Scorpio, opposing signs, share an affinity for material and financial security, emotional security, and the sensual/sexual realm. The two signs just approach what feels good in those areas of life differently: Taurus sometimes gets comfortable to the point of stasis in what it enjoys; Scorpio often lets extreme discomfort fuel regeneration.

Enter Nessus. A centaur planet, Nessus is bringing up some form of shadow, baggage or ancestral patterning for us to recognize and heal, related to the Taurus-Scorpio axis. Nessus speaks of patterns of sexual abuse (or its potential), and indicates we have the power to stop the proverbial buck.

In Aquarius, the abuse is societal — think of the sexual double standards in the media, rampant slut-shaming, online bullying, our culture’s obsession with political sex scandals, and any way your sexuality is used to manipulate your behavior.

Nessus in Aquarius squaring the boldly earthy, lusty, emotionally invested and biologically driven Scorpio Full Moon is pushing us to push back against the corrupted socio-sexual constructs around us. The message is: dare to step out fully in all your sex-positive, body-aware uniqueness.

Notably, this year’s Taurus Full Moon echoes the 2011 Taurus Full Moon (also here), which was also square Nessus. How far have you come since then? If you’ve felt boxed in or ashamed of your sexuality, are you finally ready to claim your full sexual, sensual value?

A Steamy Sky — and Your Moonshine Horoscopes

In the meantime, we’re in a fertile mix of predominantly water astrology and some richly earthy astrology this week. Intuition and secret-dissolving clairvoyance are heightened for the first part of the week; as we move toward Friday, the emphasis shifts to some kind of ‘sexual revolution’ as super-personal Venus mixes with the Uranus-Pluto square.

All this activity is setting the scene for the Taurus Full Moon (Scorpio Sun opposite Taurus Moon) on Sunday, Nov. 17. Genevieve Hathaway has written today’s Moonshine horoscopes specifically for the event — a deeply sensual and potentially provocative Full Moon.
