For the Aries New Moon, we have the Sun and Moon conjunct (that is, together) in early Aries. It’s the first New Moon of the astrological year, reverberating with a sense of presence in the world and the associated urge to get things moving. Aries is ruled by Mars, the planet of drive, libido, desire, physical action and even aggression or violence.

Incidentally, Mars is in its opposite sign, Libra, and is moving in apparent retrograde motion, which can feel like you’re moving inward into yourself or reviewing the past, rather than charging forward, as our Mars energies prefer to do. So in a way, the Sun and Moon are standing in for Mars, at least in terms of giving our self-awareness and emotions some forward thrust as this new season begins.

Sun-Moon conjunctions harmonize our conscious will and emotions, which is an advantage when trying to move forward in life — though it bears noting that such a close alliance between our two ways of knowing can also hinder our sense of perspective. It’s kind of like when you’re standing right next to someone: you can’t see them clearly or fully in your peripheral vision.

That said, perhaps the most exciting feature of this Aries New Moon is that it is aligned with three out of four of the planets involved in April’s incredible grand cross. The Sun and Moon are conjunct Uranus in Aries, and square to both Jupiter in Cancer and Pluto in Capricorn.

In other words, whatever inner tension you may feel this weekend around reinventing yourself, or breaking away from some aspect of your past conditioning, or expanding your sense of home and how you feel in it, consider it a preview of April’s big event. This New Moon is an opportunity to identify and align yourself with your most important goals and desires; you plant that seed by taking the first steps toward them.

Come April 23, when Mars enters the configuration, following through may come down to a matter of trust in yourself, as Eric mentioned last week — but it won’t come out of nowhere. You have to begin cultivating it now, in small, tangible ways.

For this Full Moon, we have the Sun in emotional, empathic Pisces being opposed by the Moon in mentally oriented, particular Virgo. Both of these signs have strong affinities for service, but even that good intention can come under some strain during a Full Moon.

Often when the desire to serve (or any good intention) strays off-course, it has to do with being unable to see the forest for the trees: either one is so caught up in what one believes is ‘the right path’ that it’s hard to see the other viable options being presented; or else passion and emotion sweeps us up and we lose some of our grounding and perspective. When that happens, would-be allies can start looking like adversaries.

Squaring the Sun and Moon in this chart is Pholus in Sagittarius. Pholus is the planet of ‘small cause, big effect’ and the runaway chain reaction. In a square to the Full Moon, it’s a reminder to be aware of how even small statements and actions can ripple out, affecting those around us, or can take on a life of their own. Be aware of your deeper motives as you express yourself to others this weekend.

Are you truly acting with the highest good for all concerned in mind? Or is it possible an element of self-righteousness has crept in? The idea is not to throw yourself into self-doubt, but to step back and gently try on a broader perspective.

Remember that if you’re starting to feel extra sensitive as the weekend approaches, chances are others are, too. Full Moon dynamics tend to play out in our relationships. And while you may be the Sun in your own personal cosmos, the person you’re relating to is the Sun in theirs. To each other, we’re mirrors, like the Moon — but we’re mirrors with the power of choice, awareness and compassion.

Mercury’s square to Saturn today may be pushing you to make a decision, or maybe you’re trying to figure out how to think for yourself. But as we get deeper into the week a third option may emerge.

We’ll still have you covered with blog posts and Eric’s Planet Waves FM broadcast this week as you figure out what this means for you. I want to remind you, however, that this Friday’s issue will be another ‘lighter’ issue as part of Eric’s birthday week, and as he works on some other projects (including another in-depth article for The Mountain Astrologer).

We also have Genevieve Hathaway’s Moonshine Horoscopes ready for you today. This set interprets the Virgo Full Moon for the 12 Moon signs.

On today’s Planet Waves FM, Eric’s guest will be Geoffrey Cornelius, author of The Moment of Astrology. They will talk about astrology as divination. Geoffrey will be offering a workshop in New York City at the end of the month (co-sponsored by Nightlight Astrology and Planet Waves).

In today’s Daily Astrology column, Eric and have I collaborated to flesh out the Mercury-Saturn square a little more. The Sun is making a couple of aspects that suggest we notice when we have the power to do the right thing. If you have a second chance to get something right, how do you use it?

Monday’s Daily Astrology column introduced the decision-making quality of the Mercury-Saturn square. This aspect also implies the process of encountering challenges to your ideas and opinions in ways that allow you to incorporate them into your own sense of inner authority — one that becomes broad enough to encompass your experience.

At noon Len Wallick’s column will post to the Planet Waves blog. Today he asks you to consider your most heartfelt intentions and decide what you would most like to manifest into reality, making the most of the Sun’s trine to Saturn. Saturday, March 1, is the Pisces New Moon, exact at 3:00 am EST — right between Mercury stationing direct and Mars stationing direct and Mars stationing retrograde, at a kind of potent still point or moment of suspension. (View full chart here.) It’s an unusual and perfect moment for some deep Pisces work.

This Pisces New Moon puts the Sun and Moon right between Neptune and Chiron, conjunct them both (though slightly closer to Chiron). This placement offers some beautiful potential: your conscious awareness and intuition in harmony with each other and able to draw on both the creative, visionary potential of Neptune and the focusing, healing capabilities of Chiron.

True, you might feel instead like you’re ‘operating under the influence’ of Neptune’s less helpful qualities (delusion, denial, dishonesty) — in which case, Chiron’s ‘wake-up call’ could be a rude one. The thing to remember about Chiron, however, is that in any healing crisis it initiates, the emphasis is always on the ‘healing’ part. And in Pisces we’re swimming in an ocean big enough and deep enough to accept whatever emotional runoff you need to release.

Pisces is also a sign marked by deeply creative, spiritual and intuitive energy. New Moons in Pisces are particularly fertile events for creative visioning as you take spiritual stock of the past astrological year and prepare your inner self for the next one (which begins with Aries).

This New Moon is also exactly trine retrograde Jupiter in Cancer (which stations direct less than a week later). Sun and Moon trine Jupiter are all about receiving blessings, success and good health, and faith in yourself. It may be that you feel these things internally more than you experience them externally, but sometimes that’s all we need to turn a corner in life and set something new — and really good — in motion for ourselves.

If your week has gotten off to a slightly glitchy or confusing start, you’re not alone. At the end of this week, both Mercury and Mars change their apparent direction; right now, it’s as if the sky’s gears are clanging together as we move toward the time to shift.

But take heart — the Pisces New Moon is in the mix. Have some contingency plans and view any surprises as opportunities, and you could find yourself someplace really interesting.

Eric covers the station direct of Mercury and Mars stationing retrograde, plus the Pisces New Moon in this week’s Planet Waves FM. All of these things happen within about 24 hours, so it’s an unusual sequence of events — get ready for some changes, a reshuffling of your priorities and making some unusual progress. He also talks about Jupiter square Uranus, which is one piece of the 2014 grand cross that will be exact on April 24 — what is likely to come with American Spring. Amidst all the potentially confusing or disruptive astrology this week, the Moon is also waning toward its new phase on Saturday. Genevieve Hathaway has interpreted the Pisces New Moon for all 12 signs in this week’s Moonshine Horoscopes.

Monday’s Daily Astrology column considered the ways in which the potentially disruptive energy from Mercury and Mars can actually open unexpected doors. You can use the square between Jupiter and Uranus to step through those doors into something new and alive.

This year’s Leo Full Moon coincides with Valentine’s Day — when romantic expectations run high and many people struggle with their self-worth, thanks to artificial retail, media and social hype. In other words, you or those around you might be feeling extra sensitive to the increasing tension of a Full Moon this week. But if you can treat yourself and others with a little extra compassion, it could go a long way — and could ripple out pretty far for the better.

Luckily, as a Full Moon peaks, tensions generally begin to ease; negotiations in seemingly intractable situations begin to feel more productive (or possible). But part of the key to riding a Full Moon is to track how your emotions may be driving your behavior, or how you might be seeing an issue in another person that exists within yourself. It’s a more proactive approach.

The Leo Full Moon is an opposition between the Moon in Leo and the Sun in Aquarius. Near the Sun in Aquarius are Nessus and retrograde Mercury. Nessus is a small planet of the centaur class. Chiron is the best-known centaur, and like Chiron, most planets in this category have to do with patterns that repeat across generations and the surfacing of old, possibly long-buried psychological material you may be in a better position to deal with (heal) now.

Nessus, specifically, speaks to how events occur in cycles — and are linked by the law of cause and effect. As Eric wrote on the Planet Waves blog Monday, “We have all heard of karma. That’s the bit about how every cause has an effect and every effect has a cause. I think of Nessus as the principle of ’cause and effect are never separate.’ Remember that as you make decisions this week.”

The Sun, retrograde Mercury and Nessus are in the sign of groups, possibly pushing your conscious awareness and communication toward conforming to the codified social expectations and patterns of Valentine’s Day. But the Moon is in Leo, which rules the heart. Nothing says, ‘I love you’ like a heart filled with compassion — for yourself as well as others.

Moonshine Horoscopes — Cancer Full Moon Edition

Wednesday, Jan. 15, is the Cancer Full Moon, exact at 11:52 pm EST. (View full chart here). Genevieve Hathaway has interpreted this lunation for each of the 12 Moon signs in her horoscopes below.

This Cancer Full Moon chart has a lot going on, making it challenging to feel out the best course of action in any situations where you feel conflict (especially conflict with an authority figure, including any internalized authority figures). The Moon is in sensitive, emotive Cancer, opposite the Sun in conservative, restrained Capricorn. That difference in expression alone can create some tension, and it’s a difference you’re likely to experience as playing out externally.

Take a moment to think back to the Capricorn New Moon on New Year’s Day. It was only two weeks ago, yet you may feel like certain situations in your life have changed considerably since then. The Cancer Full Moon is the companion event to that New Moon; this is the peak of the lunar cycle. Certain situations that were seeded on Jan. 1 are coming to a head and may resolve or develop as the Moon begins waning again Thursday.

Then again, one option you have with this Full Moon is to hold whatever tension is present until a moment when you can act in clearer accord with your values. As Len Wallick points out in his column today, holding tension, negotiation and approaching the conflict with creativity are all viable ways to work with the seeming polarities presented with this lunation.

Keep those options in mind. The Sun and Moon are being aspected by four astrological goddesses (Black Moon Lilith, Eris, Ceres and Vesta) reminding us that as surely as the feminine principle can create, it can also destroy. You might not be wholly comfortable with that power, choosing instead to ascribe it to an intimate partner, a parent or another authority figure.

If you don’t acknowledge and own both your light and your dark, embodying both Sun and Moon, you give up your authority and ability to guide its power according to your values and what is best for you. What is truly best for you, ultimately, also serves the highest good for all concerned.
