December: Sagittarius Sun, and an Intriguing Solstice

Dear Planet Waves Reader:

The Sun is now in Sagittarius. This is such an interesting time of year, but we tend to miss the spiritual qualities because our lives are so focused outwardly — shopping, preparing for family gatherings and going a bit nuts with year-end duties, depending on what business you’re in. In the Northern Hemisphere the days grow shorter at this time of year, drawing us inward: but everything seems to be focused on others and on the world of activity. Perhaps if we could follow the calling within, the problem of holiday depression that so many people face would be far less severe.

Planet Waves
Barred Spiral Milky Way. This is a NASA artist’s conception of what our galaxy looks like from above. The Earth’s Sun would be about three-quarters of the way out, between two of the spiral arms.

As the Sun moves through Sagittarius, it’s also moving toward a solstice. This is the last four weeks of the days getting shorter (here in the north), something that begins at the summer solstice and which I am sure that few people think about at that time. So there is that sense of the last bit of time compression as the days grow to their shortest. This is compounded by the addition of standard time, which lops an hour of daylight off of the end of the day when the days are already short — I’ve never quite followed the logic of that.

Then there’s something else going on: the Earth and Sun are aligned such that we pass by two different galactic points during the next few weeks — the Great Attractor around Dec. 8, and the Galactic Core around Dec. 18. Both of these are dark matter points that I believe are associated with the time compression phenomenon this time of year. As the Sun passes the Great Attractor, there will be a New Moon on Dec. 5. This is conjunct Pholus, the second centaur planet (the first was Chiron). Remember Pholus? Small cause, big effect? We need to watch how the situation in Korea works out (please see related story below).

The Galactic Core, for its part, functions like a homing device. I believe it’s where much of our spiritual yearning is focused — toward the center of our island in space. Here on Earth, we are far from the core, between two of the spiral arms of our galaxy — not only are we remote from the center, we’re located on a back road. No wonder it gets lonely here.

Now, as for the holidays themselves: try to keep your plans flexible. The year ends with a bit of mystery and complexity, and information from astrology may help you keep things simpler than they might ordinarily work out. This is one of those examples when astrology functions as a source of vital information.

So far it’s been a year that few people will forget: the grand cross in the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) shook up the world, ranging from the BP oil spill to the Tea Party. These same transits may have picked you up and spun you around a bit, though the peak of the grand cross has finally passed.

Planet Waves

Yet we have one last astrological adventure before the relatively clear skies of mid-January: a combination of simultaneous factors between now and Jan. 4 that include the Mercury retrograde, a solstice and two eclipses. I’ll take them in order, offering some advisories that are tailored to meet the needs of busy human westerners.

I know there are many people who wish they could entirely sit out the holidays, and I would encourage you to do that if you want to, and if social conventions permit. Remember, too, that you can customize your socializing, such as by moving Christmas to the Eastern Orthodox version on Jan. 7, the long-forgotten holiday Epiphany

(when, according to the story, some really cool astrologers arrived at the birthplace of Jesus).

Okay, on to our story. Mercury is retrograde between Dec. 10 and Dec. 30. This covers the holiday shopping season, Christmas and (because Mercury changing directions actually shakes things up for several days) takes us right up to New Year’s Eve.

If you’re one who participates in the custom of buying gifts, I suggest you put more thought than money into the endeavor. Stick to simple items, for example, things made of wood, paper or cloth rather than electronic products. Books and crafts are two examples. I am collecting things like handcrafted soap and good old astrology books to share with friends. (Here is a potential gift-giving guide, called Everything Old is New Again.)

Eclipses, meanwhile, are falling at the end of the year and early summer. They drift through the seasons on a nine-year cycle. They have been occurring in Cancer and Capricorn and are now moving toward Gemini and Sagittarius. The current eclipses (Dec. 21 and Jan. 4) as usual promise to raise the intensity level of existence, and create a threshold into the next phase of our lives. But their proximity to the solstice points adds that much more energy to the mix. In December we have a lunar eclipse (the Sagittarius Full Moon) on the eve of the Capricorn solstice, one that you won’t need an astrology chart to notice. This is followed by a solar eclipse on Jan. 4 (the Capricorn New Moon), which is when you can think of 2011 as actually beginning.

All of this adds up to a few simple points. One is, do less rather than more. When the astrology gets like this, it’s possible to go into mental or emotional overload. Therefore, do your part to stay back from the edge. Go for fewer commitments, less travel, less shopping and overall reducing any tendency you may have to rely on obligation as a means of guidance. We all notice how many people start to act like frantic robots around the holidays; I admire the people who dare to try something new.

If you can get to a wavelength above all the buzz created by these inner planet movements (Sun, Moon and Mercury all qualify), there is another level that’s brilliantly creative. This appears as a kind of Star of Bethlehem in the form of the conjunction of Jupiter and Uranus in Pisces. This is an aspect associated with great meetings, technical breakthroughs and some of the most positive developments in any creative endeavor. It’s worth staying home for; Pisces is about the inner life, and this is a moment of visceral soul contact that is available to anyone.

Wishing you a brilliantly creative holiday season,

Eric Francis

An international confrontation: Korea situation astrology

Dear Friend and Reader:

Two weeks ago, I cautioned in the subscriber edition of Planet Waves (“And What Are We Attracting?“) that we were heading for what appeared at the time to be an imminent international confrontation of some kind. “It looks like some hotly polarized, extremely exaggerated international situation that pops up seemingly out of nowhere,” I wrote in that edition. We now have a clue what I was seeing in the chart: the situation that emerged between the two Koreas on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

Planet Waves
Chart for the beginning of the Korea situation on Tuesday. Notice the Aries Point rising, and Pluto in Capricorn on the Aries Point (via Capricorn) on the midheaven, at the very top of the chart. Also notice the Gemini Moon is opposite the alignment of Pallas, Mercury and Mars in Sagittarius.

Accounts as to what happened vary, but the result was that North Korea began shelling a military base on the South Korean island of Daeyeonpyeong, one of several islands collectively referred to as Yeonpyeong Island. North Korea stated that it had responded after the South had recklessly fired dozens of shells into North Korean territorial waters around Yonphyong Islet. Naturally, there are two sides to the story, though it seems unlikely that South Korea would start firing shells to the north ‘recklessly’. Anyway, the result is that we have one of the worst conditions between these two nations in decades.

MSNBC is reporting that the United States’ George Washington aircraft carrier battle group is on its way to the region. U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak, a former admiral who once commanded that carrier group, is saying he believes we’re deploying it to the region as much to be in a position to retaliate against the North as we are to be preventing the South from over-reacting. He said the chances of the situation escalating are “pretty darned low” if we handle things carefully and use China as an ally. China is the one country with any real influence over North Korea. (Notably, during the Vietnam War, China was working against the United States by financing North Vietnam. It truly is interesting how things change.) Sestak, a member of the House Armed Services Committee (an influential House of Representatives committee), said he believes that U.S. military resources are severely depleted by our involvement in Iraq, and that we don’t have much left to handle a military situation on the Korean peninsula if push really comes to shove.

One of the reasons I suggest we take this seriously is the astrology. [Here is the chart at full size.] I mentioned that the grouping of Mars, Mercury, Pallas and Pholus are aligned with a fixed point called the Great Attractor, as well as with a slow-mover called Ixion. In addition, all of these points align with something called the Nuclear Axis, an arrangement in the chart for the first self-sustaining atomic reaction, which is a pretty good chart for predicting nuclear situations. In about a week, we’re going to have a New Moon conjunct Pholus right on the Great Attractor and the Nuclear Axis. Pholus has a way of letting the genie out of the bottle. And it points to effects that have causes going back several generations, and that are associated with drunkenness of one kind or another (drunk with power would qualify).

First let’s look at the ascendant — that would be the Aries Point rising — very early Aries. Now look at the midheaven — that too would be the Aries Point, via early Capricorn with Pluto right on top of the chart. This tells us we have a high-impact situation on our hands, something that could have real implications. Pluto on the midheaven is not friendly — that’s about governments obsessing over their military might and ability to control (what they think of as) ‘reality’.

Next let’s look at the position of the Moon. The Moon is in late Gemini, opposing the alignment in Sagittarius I was describing in the article. What is a bit troubling is that next week’s Sagittarius New Moon is conjunct Ixion, Pholus and the Great Attractor. Mercury and Mars have moved on; Pallas is lingering in late Sagittarius; but there is still a powerful conjunction gathered around the Great Attractor, and then along comes a conjunction of the Sun and Moon to set it off.

I’m not sure how knowing all this helps, though generally I feel that awareness is a good thing, so let’s keep paying attention.

Last Call on Light Bridge for One Price;
All Readers Invited to Cosmic Confidential

Dear Planet Waves Subscriber:

Light Bridge, the 2011 annual edition of Planet Waves, is in progress. The astrology for 2011 is exciting, and it’s the last year before the full-contact point of 2012. So this is the year of preparation and transition: of new transits that will shape the background of life and challenge us to be in full integrity about who we are.

Light Bridge is still available for one low price. Early next week I’ll switch the sales page to a pay-per-sign method; that will about double the price of all 12. For now, you can get all 12 for the price of two individual signs. Based on how I do this kind of detailed astrology, I consider the write-up for your rising sign to be as significant as the one for your Sun sign. I know this is supposed to be Sun sign astrology, but the houses play a huge role, so I suggest you take the extra step of finding your ascendant through a chart service (which is easy, and free, such as through Astro.com), and investigating your rising sign. That’s the sign that is rising in the east at the time of your birth, every bit as influential as your Sun.

You may also do this for family members or significant others whose astrology you’re investigating. This will be a mix of written and audio, with some overlap in the interpretations, though the audio piece and the written one will be their own entities. So there will be plenty of personal astrology in this annual.

Free Access to Cosmic Confidential This Weekend

I’ve removed the passwords to Cosmic Confidential, the 2010 annual edition, for the weekend. If you didn’t subscribe, you have a chance to look in on what we said about your sign(s) for 2010, and to see the many reader comments. Here is your link to the full edition, and here is your link to the 12 signs of astrology.

Planet Waves

One reader just wrote in, “Over the last few years, I have been grappling with a variety of deep internal issues, and what do you know — they are all listed in your horoscope! It’s a real affirmation for the set of choices I have made recently during a time when even I sometimes start to wonder about these choices.”

And another wrote this weekend, “Thanks for giving us access to these. The Virgo report is uncannily accurate; it is my rising sign . . . when I took astrology classes, I remember feeling so overwhelmed by the tons of information for each part of the chart; I never did master the art of knowing how to put it all together. Your ability to do so is amazing to me.”

I think that every astrologer dreams of being able to provide interpretations that work for people without the necessity for an individual reading. While a long one-on-one conversation takes things to a new level, in 15 years of doing sessions with clients, while writing nearly 1,000 astrology columns and far more articles, I’ve learned how to give you something truly useful in my interpretations.

And you’re invited to take advantage of this.

Yours & truly,

Eric Francis

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope for December 2010

Aries (March 20-April 19)

The past year has offered a glimpse of what is possible. You’ve also seen how much can change how fast, and how little you will miss the past when it does. Mostly, though, I trust that you’ve noticed that life treats you better when you offer yourself as a direct participant rather than as a spectator. Now, there are two basic postures through which you can participate. One is defensive. The other is progressive. You’ve had a few tastes of both. Defensive is basically a mode of reacting to or pushing back against your environment, after it has moved and affected your life some way. Progressive is you get an idea about who you are, then commence an experiment or adventure seeing what it’s like to explore that idea. This is a creative way to live, in that you’re consciously self-creating who you are, then asserting that on your environment like an artist paints on canvas. I admit that few astrologers would say that any Aries lacks assertiveness. But I’m not talking about being headstrong, pushy or ambitious. I’m talking about making subtle refinements that efficiently remove any reactive postures you may have, including being ruled by the fear that you will disrupt the apple cart, disappoint others or change your world in a way that you cannot change back. I suggest you make friends with all of these possibilities, and boldly create existence from the inside out.

Taurus (April 19- May 20)

You seem to be on a quest to be free within your relationships. Or rather, your relationships may be on a quest to have you be free within them. There is no question that you’re involved and deeply invested in the personal and professional situations of your life. Neither is there any question that you’ve been exploring the limits of both your personal tolerance with limitations and the potential for evolving into a new version of yourself. This has presented a struggle seemingly with as many disappointments and losses as there have been gains and moments of progress. Over the next few weeks, something unusual happens. This set of circumstances ignites your passion for freedom and independence simultaneously with your drive to connect with the people around you, potentially someone specific. There is an ‘everything, all at once’ property to the moment, and you may be in a position — wittingly or not — to make decisions that have the ability to unravel your life as you know it. That is potentially a good thing; as much as you fear too much change too fast, stagnation is not a healthy state of being. I suggest, however, that you do your best to make your moves consciously. Acting on idle curiosity can be dangerous. I suggest making decisions only when you know what you want. That means being aware of what you want and keeping it in mind as a reference point all the time.

Gemini (May 20- June 21)

One thing does indeed lead to another, and that process will proceed in your relationships with the approximate enthusiasm of opening a shaken-up bottle of champagne. With that as our starting metaphor, I suggest you avoid making decisions when you’ve drunk any more than an Honest Tea — unless you’re in the mood for a wild ride. Though I’m not usually the writer who does the Dear Prudence column, I’m going to take that role this month. As regards any relationship or partnership, keep your long-term intentions clearly in mind, and make every decision based on those intentions. Make sure you remember that it’s you who’s running your life. Whatever may happen in your world, you have a wide diversity of possible responses, and I suggest that the best ones would include a lot of time for contemplation, and for consulting with those who have less involvement or investment than you do, be it emotional or financial. What you need is objectivity. Please, get some and have it ready when you need it; inserting strategic pauses in the action may be enough. The combination of holiday pressures and numerous factors of the current astrology (Mercury retrograde, solstice and eclipses, among others) are potentially dangerous when mixed into one vat, and you need to proceed slowly, with actual caution until early January. Then you’ll be able to make coherent decisions that work out best for you and the people you care about most.

Cancer (June 21- July 22)

You may have a tendency to process information with your mind rather than your feelings, and right now you need both. The astrology of December calls for balance; it necessitates a dialog, starting with yourself. Here’s what I can tell you. First, no situation is as difficult or as complex as it seems. Challenging, perhaps, and yes — it takes faith to give yourself some distance and let things work out, particularly when you think the one thing you must do is exert control. There’s a relationship situation where that just won’t work — but here is the silver lining: you don’t want control, nor would it serve you, nor would it serve anyone else involved. This is a moment when the fates will intervene on your behalf, if you allow them to. How to do that is to stand out of their way, which means your own way. There is a phenomenon of something appearing one way, then morphing into something else, so allow that process to work so that you know where people, and circumstances, really stand before you decide how you feel about them. I suggest you make a yoga of keeping your fears not only in check, but rather burning them as a source of creativity. Certain events this month will teach you what you don’t want. Others will teach you what you want. Remember, the second of those is much more important.

Cancer Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

Leo (July 22- Aug. 23)

Think strategically about your health, and about your work. Proceed with a plan, and allow that to be the central feature in your life. You appear to be under some extra physical and psychological stress; you can handle it, if you take care of yourself. This would be an amazing time to get into the groove of true self-care, if it’s something you’ve resisted in the past. Pluto is in Capricorn for the long haul, and is about to be joined by Mars. This is giving you the energy and incentive to push it, though Mercury retrograde (in the same neighborhood) is suggesting that you not do so, and in particular that you take care of your mind. Even if you’re in a tight spot financially, try not to worry about cash — a world of opportunity is likely to open up in the spring, particularly if you keep yourself in balance now. If you count that as your primary responsibility, you’ll notice your life flows better, opening up a sense of potential that is mostly psychological in nature. That’s the kind of potential that actually works. And in this, having a plan will help immeasurably, to give you the sense that what you’re doing is actually doable — and it is. I can sum up your whole plan in the words of Don Herold, quoted in my favorite homeopathic text (Prisma): “Work is the greatest thing in the world, so we should always save some of it for tomorrow.”

Virgo (Aug. 23- Sep. 22)

Art will not only save your life, it will give you life; it will give back to you more than you put in, with the benefits extending to everyone around you. Art begins when you don’t try to impress anyone with what you’re creating. It’s all about what you do and how you feel, so don’t try to impress yourself, either. I suggest you consider any and all of your excuses for why you don’t do art as remnants or direct results of childhood trauma: examples such as having too much work, not enough talent, it’s too frivolous or best of all, too childish. Proceed on the basis of sensation. Treat any excuse or resistance that comes up as specifically the thing you get to heal as a direct reward for embarking on creative experience — and experience is the key concept here. Taste some of that; lure yourself with how good it feels. You have enormous energy pent up in the creative-erotic angle of your chart, and it’s wanting to come out now, in force. I suggest that whatever you do, that you work with something kinesthetic: such as clay, paper maché or even finger paint. This will provide direct contact with what you’re doing and let you feel the shapes take form. This will keep the creative energy flowing from your mind to your body through to the thing created. Remember: no judging, evaluating or critiquing. Feel, and feel the child in you coming to life.

Libra (Sep. 22 - Oct. 23)

Let’s take a moment and review the recent Venus retrograde (spanning from early October through late November). I know the current astrology has morphed into what may seem like bolder adventures, and the rare retrograde of your planet, partly in your sign, may already feel like a thing of the past. Yet for you, it’s what distinguishes this year from many others in your life, and I suggest that the take-away from the past two months is a longterm project of understanding the concept of self-esteem. As I’ve suggested in longer articles, self-esteem is the spiritual issue of our day. It’s connected to mindfulness and the ability to respect yourself, to honor your authentic values, and to live like you’re a natural part of existence. Through early January as Venus makes its way across Scorpio, you get to internalize this material in a full way. You’ll have many opportunities to see the shadows in your mind as what they are, and to assert yourself against the negative conditioning of your upbringing. You’ll be able to witness the ways in which your values have been dictated by others, and distinguish these influences from the ones that you’re providing on your own terms. Nobody has or ever had the right to tell you how to feel about yourself: that is your privilege alone, and as you embrace a new depth of self-acceptance you will come into even closer harmony with the world around you.

Libra Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

Scorpio (Oct. 23- Nov. 22)

Your mind is a filter through which you perceive the rest of reality. The rest, as in the little that’s left without your mind. You know that expression, ‘Smile and the whole world smiles with you’? It also translates to, ‘Rage and the world rages with you’, and ‘Be alert and aware and the whole world is alert and aware with you’. Now, which of these is happening? You may be experiencing a strange mix. Because Mars is joining Pluto in Capricorn this month, you’re working through a maze of material from your distant past. Any frustrations you’re feeling connect with the embodied emotions of a powerful yet powerless child who could not successfully influence the environment around him/her. The thing to remember now is that you can influence your environment, and that you don’t need to rage, compete, argue or justify yourself. It may take some extra focus to notice the lines between old influences and new ones, and to see that you’re responding to both at the same time. If you’re feeling helpless or defensive, that’s a sign that you’re not recognizing the options that you have to make a difference in your own life. Every factor is guiding you to consider those options. You don’t need to make a lot of changes; one or two bold moves might be enough. The very point where you feel the most hamstrung or frustrated is where to look the most honestly, and in the words of my mentor, Joe Trusso, “Use what you know.”

The Scorpio Audio Report is now done. This reading includes more than an hour of astrology and 20 minutes of tarot custom created for those with Scorpio Sun, Moon or rising. Priced at $14.95, it makes a useful and economical gift. Use this link for instant access.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Business and money are the primary focus of the next six weeks. If you’ve been waiting for the opportunity to perk up your lot in life, you’re in the zone, though timing is everything: December is for preparation, January is for action. Obviously you’re feeling the drive and the rumblings; and we all know that the last few weeks before the holidays are not usually the best time to invest a lot of energy because everyone seems to have something else on their mind. That may be true, but you’re likely to have a series of low-key interactions with people that feel more like conspiratorial plans than like Apple announcing the newest iThing. I suggest you directly focus on creating a financial strategy. Be specific about what you want to create and how you want to get there. And I suggest you put this high on your priority list as a longterm endeavor. Here is the spiritual piece: in doing so, you’re likely to come up against the programming of past generations that we can politely call poverty consciousness. You might encounter guilt that you want and intend to create abundance. You might encounter any number of emotions, ranging from the sense of ‘not deserving’ to noticing the struggles of others, to your belief that you cannot thrive in a ‘bad economy’. This is the karma that it’s time to burn through, once and for all; you’re done with it, and it’s done with you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22- Jan. 20)

This ought to be an interesting month: just about everything that can happen in astrology happens in your sign. Nearby planets are aligning with distant ones, Mercury retrograde will be dancing around and (looking ahead to early January) a solar eclipse takes place, square your ruling planet Saturn. That all must mean something — it looks like action and activity, plenty of it unpredictable. You get a series of chances for significant wins and losses, which means the potential for actual progress. This happens at the time of year when most people want to kick back and take it easy, spending a little too much time drunk and overstuffed. Not you, please. Maintain your focus, and proceed with a plan. Keep an eye on both necessity and opportunity. Manage your holiday commitments carefully, and I strongly suggest minimizing travel plans: you will save time, money and precious mental energy. What I’m suggesting overall is that you leave sufficient bandwidth available to take advantage of what opportunities come your way and to solve puzzles that may arise, all so that you can be in maximum creative mode. The shadow side of this may be confusion about who you are, a measure of inner chaos and some anger; the solution here is to keep your perspective, and maintain whatever spiritual or growth practice has served you — such as yoga, therapy, morning pages, and skillful use of your appointment calendar. And please don’t fall for anyone claiming you owe them something. Guilt is a nonstarter. Toss it back.

Aquarius (Jan. 20- Feb. 19)

There’s a passage in A Course in Miracles that took me a little time to get used to, like about 20 years. That is: “You don’t ask too much from life, but rather far too little.” It’s time to start asking for more; time to recognize how much you have and how useful it is. You can now put together two seemingly different aspects of who you are into one unified person, actually dialing in solutions that come from you and your existing resources. The thing to remember is: you have what it takes, on many different levels; your current exploration is finding the point of alignment. This should be easy. If you keep your focus on who you are, you will discover what you have. And that discovery will reveal that you have far more than you think, in resources of any kind, in ideas, in community: turning this into productive energy is a matter of intention and alignment. There is an intuitive leap involved. It’s like the resources you’ve got available are right next to you and you’re reaching a little further than you need to. Your greatest success will come from putting two obvious things, concepts or people together that you might have guessed would work so effectively. The results of this alchemy take you one wide and wild step beyond what you know, beyond what is familiar and certainly beyond what you expected was possible at this time in your life.

Aquarius Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

Pisces (Feb. 19- March 20)

If you’re in a phase of seeking, and finding, ever-greater clarity, then remember — everything is subject to being perceived through this lens. Be open to revising your methods, and let every development be an occasion to do so. Be open to revising your goals, but remember what the most enduring of them are, and keep your focus there. Be flexible enough that you can adapt to your environment and evolve your concept of what you want, and steadfast enough that you can persist in the face of the questions and possibilities that are humming around one authentic purpose. Look closely and you will see the silver lining to everything. Listen carefully and you’ll get clear direction about how to reach your next destination efficiently, though in a way you might not have been expecting. What the planets portend is a depth of awareness that you can apply to your worldly affairs right away, in actuality rather than in theory — remember that. This is a truly revolutionary time in your life, a fact that will become apparent after the dust settles on the wild spell of astrology that blows through late in the year. Learn to trust yourself as a daily yoga. Learn to recognize your contributions to the world from moment to moment. And remember to keep your vision close to the front of your mind. Remember what you’re creating, and remind yourself what this says about who you are becoming.

Scorpio Time: Erotic Enlightenment

Dear Friend and Reader:

Scorpio time is when the veil between the worlds is thinnest. In many cultures, this time of year is host to Days of the Dead, where the living honor their ancestors, making food for them and lighting the way back home with candles. This is a great tradition, honoring our predecessors, the movement of the seasons and the seasons of life.

Absorbing the Moonlight, Paris, 2008. Photo by Danielle Voirin.

Yet Scorpio is also the sign that covers all themes erotic, on the emotional level and the physical. This year’s transit of the Sun through Scorpio is joined by several other planets. At the moment, Venus is retrograde in Scorpio. She is joined by the temple priestess Vesta, and the messenger planet, Mercury. And for a little while longer, Mars is in Scorpio, heating up our emotional desire nature. When Mars enters Sagittarius later this week, we’ll be reminded that we can take our desire nature for a ride across the sign associated with our most cosmic origins — the Galactic Center. This is a hint about the inherently spiritual nature of desire, which seems to be one of the more dependable factors that advances the cause of humanity.

Meanwhile, we have Venus retrograde in Scorpio. This is a profound transit in every sense of the word. She is about getting underneath our emotions and discovering the true essence of self. With this transit we have questions to which we’re seeking personally relevant answers: what is the nature of attachment? Does it improve or get in the way of our desire to seek pleasure? What is jealousy and why do we worship it?

Vesta in Scorpio is about honoring our devotion to the inner flame of passion as something one and the same as the fire of the soul. Vesta is the goddess of fire, and her virgin servants were revered in Roman times. Vesta’s presence in Scorpio says the time has come to devote ourselves to the inner erotic and creative flame. The ways you might do this include defining a space in your home (a Vesta property) devoted to what you might call ero-yoga, the daily practice of nourishing and cultivating healthy, flexible erotic energy.

Another key element in erotic enlightenment is gaining knowledge. We live in a time when the information of the ages is available, if we want it. You’re not going to find out that much on CNN, but many talented authors have opened the subject for us. Information and ideas are available if we want them: that is, if we want to challenge our old ideas and stretch into something new. Many have experienced the pleasure and freedom of doing that. The top two books I would recommend are one old and one new: Eros Denied (1964, which explains the problem eloquently) and Sex At Dawn (2010, which points us out of the maze and toward our true nature).

One last note — Mercury, now in Scorpio, is a reminder to speak the unspeakable: to take this opportunity to share, verbally or in writing, what you’ve been unable to say before. Try and you will find the words you want and need. Be brave — that’s what it takes.

As November develops, the Sun and Mercury shift into Sagittarius, joining Mars. Then Venus stations direct in Libra, where Saturn is grounding the energy of balance and integrity. So this concentrated Scorpio energy we are now experiencing fans out into a wider mysticism (Sagittarius, home of the Galactic Core) with an added emphasis on relationships (Libra). This is rare, beautiful, useful and most of all fun astrology. Get it while you can.

This month’s horoscopes reflect these planetary movements, and of course there is more every day at Planet Waves, where I offer a fast-moving free website and a first-rate premium service. And look for Light Bridge, my 2011 annual interpretations for all 12 signs. Look for that email Wednesday night. Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope – November 2010

Your interests and those of someone close to you seem to be skewed in two different directions. It may feel as if the values that you once shared and that bonded you are now diverging, and growing more distant by the day. It would help if you acknowledge this rather than ignore it or hope it will change. What is rarely taken into account is that despite being in a relationship — whether partners, business collaborators or friends — people have different cycles of growth. You’re experiencing one of those cycles now, and it may be creating a diversity of effects where people seem unavailable. What matters now is focusing on what you want. You’re still caught up in the emotional residue of what was or might have been; the particular cycle you’re at is moving forward, cutting yourself free from past emotional entanglements. As you do this, and as you persist and focus on what you want to create, you will figure out that you’re in totally new territory, with a much wider horizon of possibilities than you had just a few weeks ago. Let this lead you far and wide; give yourself the chance to open up to a new kind of optimism, in particular, one that does not depend on the presence or acknowledgement of anyone else. Yes, you’re likely to have lingering feelings or regrets. Remember: we all must live with one another’s decisions.

As children, we’re given one all-or-nothing relationship option to which all roads supposedly lead, which is marriage. This turns out to be like signing a credit card application: there are many hidden concepts lurking beneath the surface, which eventually manifest. This would be less of an issue if marriage were not the one and only acceptable notion of two people getting together. And this notion is so prevalent, and so taken for granted, that nearly every other form of relationship models itself after it. You’re now in a time of questioning all of the assumptions that you make in your relationships, or that you’ve ever made. To question an assumption you first have to know what it is, so you can look at it, decide if it’s true, and create some alternatives. This falls under the general heading ‘becoming aware of that which was previously unconscious’. Once you start exploring this topic, you’re going to find all sorts of interesting things you overlooked, and when you address them (mostly with decisions) your relationships are going to be a lot happier. These include expectations placed on others and yourself, hidden agendas, conditions, ideas about the value of sex, shared property and a diversity of other topics. The idea is not to resolve them all, but rather to embark on a process of keeping all of your conditions on the surface, where you can see them.

You may have figured out the relationship between sex and your health. When you get the sex you want, you feel good, and when you don’t you may feel sluggish, depressed or like your life lacks meaning. Many people might judge this as a form of addiction; I would say that it’s more like if you don’t eat, you get cranky. For the next couple of months, you can equate sex to food, and apply the same basic principles of choosing what is nourishing, keeping your life in balance and noticing what things in your diet are depleting. It would help if you have contacts available who share this idea. At the moment, you may be feeling like your erotic nature is overly concerned with the idea of power. It’s true that for the foreseeable future, you need to look carefully at every situation and make sure that the power relationship is both conscious and balanced. It will help enormously if you didn’t judge what you want based on the opinions of others who may have more vanilla tastes than you do. If you’re going to explore what is called power exchange in your erotic encounters, it’s wise to do this with full awareness, mutual agreements and limits that both people honor. Just remember, you were born to push the edge, and one of your greatest assets is your curiosity. Therefore I suggest you associate with the edgy and the curious.

It is always interesting what comes out in the wash known as sex. We in the West — that includes North America, Europe and the UK — have had so much baggage packed around our erotic desires that it’s amazing we even recognize them when we feel them, and the truth is, many people do not. This is a potent theme being described by the planets through the rest of the year, and your sign (and Cancer rising) are experiencing some of the most interesting layers of the journey. Rather than predicting, I will speak in questions. The first is about how you respond to what you attract. Do you welcome what you attract, or do you meet it with doubt or resentment? There’s a matter of ownership involved: of taking full responsibility for what is in your field of awareness, to the degree where you can actually have the experiences that are available, or choose something else. Another question involves the deeper material that surfaces when you choose an experience, including the bonds of relationship that form and what they mean to you. Finally, there’s the matter of desire itself, and your ongoing quest to experience desire liberated from guilt, shame or regret. You’re learning to experience desire in a direct, authentic way, without hesitation or remorse. As the month progresses, this will take on the flavor of a full-strength spiritual healing mission. That’s exactly what it is.

Your notion of safety involves being grounded in your emotions. You could be standing in a hurricane and feel safe, if you’re emotionally centered; you could be inside a fully stocked fortress with a paramedic team nearby and feel insecure if your emotions are off-kilter. So this is the time to tend the center. Your emotional life now has a central organizing principle, and that is where to focus. One image is the hearth at the center of a home. Tending the hearth is the central activity of keeping the home warm, safe and lived-in. There seems to be some kind of 24-hour-a-day devotion involved; the more you commit yourself to that, the better you will feel. You’ve done your share of emotional questioning the past month or so, and there seems to be one particular matter that is a source of doubt; you’re likely to forget about that, and it’s likely to take care of itself. What you can focus on, from your centered and grounded state, is making direct progress on what you want. This is likely to come in the form of a highly focused strategy that includes a wide-reaching plan and deducing a series of direct steps to making it real. Keep your optimism vividly in mind. Aim your intentions. Remember the many lessons of past generations, and be thankful you don’t have to go through any of that again.

If you encounter any turbulence in your home environment, do your best to think logically. Virgo is the sign of doing precisely that, except for how nervous you can be. So this will require conscious choices, and these in turn, will summon you to apply the best of your skill and experience. What seems like a simple situation, agitation or ordinary household conflict, is really much deeper, and there is rich material for you to explore here. Earlier in the year, around August and September, you may have found yourself in a situation that called for you to delve into your family history. That episode gave you a chance to sort out your personal karma from your ancestral karma. Now, you get to bring the full presence of your mind and move directly into the eye of the storm. There’s a situation that you have inherited from at least two generations ago, and you’re now in a confident enough place to approach it with a fully open mind, and work it out directly. The question is the same: what belongs to you, now, and what is properly the domain of the past? And where do these two ideas merge so perfectly that there is no difference? Nearly everything we deem spiritual growth involves changing our ideas about the past, therefore getting ourselves in a position to have access to our power in the present moment. And that is precisely what you can do.

The Virgo Audio Birthday Report is available. There are those moments when it’s possible to forget who you were, and become the person you are now. Sometimes to get there it seems necessary to obsess over the past, or the past obsesses over you. It also may be necessary to be confronted over and over again with who and what you are not, and who and what does not work for you. Here in the world of duality, contrast can be a helpful tool. It’s also a tool that only gets us so far. What you’re feeling for is a subtle shift of feelings — or rather two of them. The first shift will be a bit like, “This is me, but it’s not quite me.” The second will feel like, “This is absolutely correct, no matter what happened in the past.” The nature of the change is emotional. The mental level will reflect your deeper sensation, but ultimately you are striving to feel right about your existence. Now, many would say this is a process that takes some time, but I would remind you of two things. One is you’ve been at it for a while. The second is that in actual fact, there comes a point of decision that is the actual place where the ‘issue’ is worked out, the choice is made, and the fact that this is your life becomes so obvious as to be undeniable for another minute. After that, the rest is landscaping.

The Libra audio is available. This reading includes more than an hour of astrology and 20 minutes of tarot custom created for those with Libra Sun, Moon or rising. This is yet another amazing birthday/ascendant audio that is getting rave reviews. Here is how to get instant access.

It may be odd for an astrologer to associate Scorpio and the concepts of virginity or celibacy — but in general what some call ‘sacred sexuality’ would not be a stretch for you. This is a term that’s used more often than it is understood, and part of your mission now is to give the concept personal meaning. Deep beneath all the ideas, illustrations and suggestions of books about tantra (a term that, in modern usage, is a byword for conscious, meaningful erotic exchange) there is a spirit of devotion. That can involve devotion to service, it can involve healing and most of all it involves the unfettered honoring of pleasure as a natural, wholesome experience. Devotion is like tending a flame, and it’s vital to recognize that the flame exists inside you before it can exist anywhere else. We all have our hang-ups, we have our doubts, we have those places that we’re afraid to go. I suggest that you choose to be undeterred by any of these things, and focus your energy and thoughts on burning your flame as hot as you need to in order to burn off your doubts, body shame and religious guilt. Experienced in this spirit, sex ceases to be a consumable item and takes on new meaning as something that honors something inherent about what a person is: a perfect expression of nature and the intelligence that we often mistake for divinity.

Look for the Scorpio Birthday Report this week.

This has been a year of large plans and brilliant ideas with success that has ranged from warm to cool. Now get ready for hot. Get ready for the force of determination that you’ve always counted on in yourself, but which lately seems to have been tempered by a more deeply introspective view of existence. I suggest, however, that you apply something other than raw energy to your goals or life situations. The charts strongly suggest a refined mental approach, akin to chess, or maybe football. They also suggest that you actually don’t need to pour on that much in the way of effort or drive. The key is to direct your energy in specific ways, looking for the levers or specific gestures that maximize the results. Without being overly cautious — something I doubt you would do, but who knows — I suggest you be mindful of unintended consequences. This could easily work in your favor, with your actions delivering a result that you were not planning on, but which could work out in an unusually creative way. Your actions may have more significant effects than you’re intending. And this warrants a word of caution or two: you must avoid actual danger, such as handling an acetylene torch or motor vehicle when drunk, or experimenting with just how mean someone you don’t trust can be. Focused curiosity is one thing; idle curiosity is quite another.

You are close to a point where you can make no more compromises about who you are. You’ve done a lot of this in the past, for diverse reasons including living up to your parents’ expectations of who you are, or those of a partner, or the impulse to be a good parent. The list of expectations and who has them would be a long one, but I’ll cut it short with the idea that your sole, soul commitment now is the authenticity of your existence. You have wiggle room, but it’s now about 1/10th of what you had a year ago. The fit is getting narrower every day, and as you hone yourself and direct your energy at this one purpose, two things are likely to happen. One is that you’ll be more willing to encounter the unsettling lack of familiarity that the task requires; and you’re going to focus your power. Part of what claiming your power brings up is guilt, so if you’re feeling some of that, take it as a sign that you’re cutting the barbed wire of the past rather than a sign that you’re wrong. You’re removing the fetters of control that were embedded to your existence when you were much younger. You’re gathering the strength to move past the self-doubts of the adults who surrounded you and who themselves dragged around the doubts of their own parents. At a certain point you’ll no longer have to decide to be confident in who you are; your confidence will decide for you.

Leadership requires a focus on ethics, and sometimes (or rather, often) there is a sense of sacrifice involved. I suggest that in the ensuing weeks you question both of these issues. As Venus stations direct in Libra, the first theme calls on you to consider ethics in the context of one-to-one relationships rather than in the general sense. Every relationship is one-to-one, whether you’re relating to a partner or to a million people. The idea here is to consider the individual case, and to be confident of your dependable tendency to do what is right. As for sacrifice, this is a misunderstood and abused concept that is the source of much avoidable misery and suffering. The presumption that we must always sacrifice (meaning, for others) is the very reason why bankers who stole from us to get their million-dollar bonuses without our raising the meekest protest. Note that the moment you question the idea, the validity or the value of sacrifice you may feel guilty for doing so. The opposite or compliment of this, or the remedy (however you choose to look at it) is your own conscious willingness to devote yourself to a project, cause or person, with no reservations and no sense of sacrifice: only the direct affirmation of what you want and what you want to create. This is what I would describe as leadership, the core value of which is uncompromised devotion.

In all likelihood, there was a time in your life when the sex was better. You may be remembering that lately; the memories may be vivid and beautiful. (Indulge yourself.) There was a time when relationships were more liberated, or more experimental. Or there was a time when you actively wanted those qualities in your contacts with others. What changed? Well, let’s see, you’re older now. That might account for your desire to have clearer experiences, which is connected to a desire to make better choices. Being older typically equates to a more firm idea of who you are, and that can lead anyone to narrow their concept of what they want — potentially (but not always) leading to deeper and more fulfilling situations. Often people price themselves out of the market, demanding so much assurance that an authentic experiment or encounter with the unknown verges on impossible. In these days and years of your life, you’re in one of the most radical processes of self-reinvention that you’ve ever been through. You’ve reinvented yourself in the past, but never so consciously and with such focus as you’re doing today — and that requires an open mind, and being open to experience. It means being open to different kinds of agreements with people than our culture sanctions, including situations that are open-ended and not pointed at a distinct goal — except for one thing: self-awareness, which might even become mutual awareness.

Under a Scorpio Sky

Dear Fellow Traveler:

The Sun has just entered Libra, yet the emphasis of the sky is already shifting into Scorpio. Everyone’s favorite planets, Venus and Mars, are now there, and we’re about to experience a relatively rare Venus retrograde, of which we’re already experiencing the first sensation.

For the next couple of weeks the Sun will be in Libra; the equinox was just a few days ago. Thursday there is a conjunction of the Sun and Saturn in Libra. This is a reminder of how much we’ve been through in the way of Saturn aspects to outer planets the past two years: five oppositions to Uranus and three squares to Pluto. By contrast this week’s astrology is a celebration that says whatever it is, you can handle it.

Next up, we have an impressive New Moon in Libra on Oct. 7. The Moon is connected to our sense of security, and this is a lunar event that goes to the heart of our questions about what it means to be secure on the planet. For a decade now, we’ve spent a lot of time and money installing metal detectors in schools, taking our shoes off at DHS checkpoints and getting searched on subway trains. I recently had to permanently surrender a mini-Leatherman from my camera bag so I could get onto the Ellis Island ferry. This week the federal government said it wants even more rights to pry into our email and social networking. Do we really live in a safer world as a result of all this control? I don’t think so.

The Oct. 7 chart says stop doing all those things supposedly designed to make you feel safe that really do no such thing. They’re the ones you do over and over again. What we get, though, is a reminder to balance our lives by investigating — and acting upon — that which is the most important to us; that which bestows actual pleasure rather than the fleeting kind.

On Oct. 8, Venus stations retrograde in Scorpio. Venus is retrograde least of all the planets — just six weeks every 18 months, or about 8% of the time (compared to Mercury, retrograde an average of 12 weeks a year, or Pluto, retrograde five months each year). This is a deep transit, in part because Venus is said to be a difficult fit for Scorpio; traditionally, this is called being in her detriment.

The story of this transit is finding within ourselves everything we seek from others. And then it’s about offering those very things back outward. Of course, this contradicts the usual Western society thing of ‘acquire everything from the outside’, and that’s the beauty of the thing. This is an investigation of what we have; it’s an inquiry into what we value, and what is the most important to us. Most of all it’s an inquiry into what we feel.

The message I take away from these charts is that we need to practice our relationships as if people are individuals, not halves of a couple. This is true of how we live our relationships, and how we design them; it’s true of how we treat others around us, as well as partners and prospects. Whether we like it or not, many of the things we take for granted will be up for question. Yet the question may not be outwardly spoken: it’s part of a deep meditation on what it means to be alive in a time of total flux, and when truth seems to hold little currency. That is part of the fraud that we’re all working out how to liberate ourselves from, and if Venus retrograde suggests honing one thing, it’s the discovery process of what is authentically true for you.

Yours & truly,

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope – October 2010

There’s only so challenging a relationship should be; only so many times that the same thing happens before a conscious attempt is made by both parties to shift the pattern. Yet you could say that within the seemingly endless workload that we create in our relationships, consciousness is the number one item on the agenda. Add a little of that and you are likely to notice that most of your struggle is pointless; that is to say, it lacks a tangible agenda, goal or orientation. This is true particularly if the pattern is repetitive or if there seems to be some lesson that you’re not learning. The futility is veiled by everyone’s investment in the situation: it’s likely to be some combination of emotional, sexual and financial, though lodged in what seems like an intractable place. It looks like you’re the one who has the power to move on, and the desire to let go of the past. It also looks like, as usual, you’re the one who is impatient and who is less willing to wait for something to happen, and more willing to work for a result. Yet a partner or love interest has a need to investigate a past issue. You may be too biased or too close to the situation to help out, but that does not dismiss the relationship. It does emphasize the fact that a relationship is the meeting of two individuals, not two halves of a couple.

The presence of another person in your life may feel so strong that you’re wondering whether contact on any kind of equal terms is possible. Yet there is no contact with another without contact with yourself. The deeper you go into your own sense of presence in your world, the deeper you’ll delve into your experiences of others. Your solar chart suggests that you’ve been keeping secrets from yourself. These secrets involve your relationship history, and in particular, what your values about deep connection are and where they came from. More specifically, Venus retrograde in Scorpio suggests that you’re deeply involved in a process of understanding your sexuality and how it manifests in your relationships. This is as much a quest for understanding the past and its influences as it is about letting go of out-of-date ideas and emotional responses — which in part means letting go of your attachment to them. This is not as difficult as you may think, particularly when you assess the cost of the attachments and get a feeling for the benefits that can come when you take your life into your own hands. I would offer these queries. What is the meaning that you put on sex, and how did it get there? What is the value you ascribe to it, and has it actually demonstrated that value? And, what did you leave behind in the distant past that you want dearly to retrieve?

There are times when we take a risk and seem to hit a wall, a limit or a restriction. Sometimes a seeming authority figure renders an opinion that something isn’t good enough. Other times, the idea of a risk is met by the response of fear. If any of that occurs in the next few weeks, remember: how you respond is more important than what happened. Your responses can range from discouragement to resentment to renewed determination. Yet once you go past the level of emotional impulse, there is a question about how you relate to your environment. What supports you, and what interferes with your creative process? I suggest you investigate everything from how your desk is arranged to the structure of your day. In considering people, are you seeking the approval of someone who seems incapable of offering it? The thing about any form of creative process is that it depends on answering to your inner authority; the notion of ‘authorship’ is about you being the one to grant yourself authorization. If you are caught in a loop where (for example) you’re seeking the approval of an actual person in your life, or covertly striving for the approval of parents who never gave it to you, that is something to look at closely. The clue would be that you tend to go in circles specifically where you put in enough love, energy and talent to make actual progress.

Saturn in your security and home angle is a new development as of this year and in particular the past couple of months. This is a challenging transit; it’s compelling you to be resolute about certain emotional matters that you would rather avoid, to go beyond the appearance of peace of mind and put your roots into the real thing. Every day brings another reminder that the past is over. This transit may be coming with a bottom-heavy feeling and a sense that you cannot escape from certain emotional loops. True, you’ve been through some profound changes in the past year, but you may wonder what they add up to. This is not a matter of setting your standards lower. What Saturn’s presence suggests is the need for some deep cleaning of your spiritual closets. This is a process that will last the next two years. On one level there is no rush. On another, the sooner you focus on what you know you need to address, the sooner you’ll have the satisfaction of progress. Most of what you’re sifting through and sorting out is inherited material that you ended up with. Far from having no effect on your life, these ideas stand on a thinly veiled guiding principle: for example, informing your notion of what is possible. Let’s put it this way. If you don’t feel deeply that anything is actually possible, then someone else’s ideas are holding you down. You can drop that weight any time you want. It’s no source of comfort. Feeling good surely is.

Nearly all of the heavy lifting of our lives involves thought. It’s true that we still move house, move rocks and build barns, but in the lives of most Westerners, the ‘burden’, if I could call it that, is careful consideration of our situation. With Saturn recently beginning a two-year trip across your solar 3rd house, the house of ideas, of communication and of our relationship to technology, you’re seeing the value of involving yourself with these processes consciously. Recently this has involved finances; you seem to have worked out a complex issue, and are now finishing the cleanup. What you’ve learned the past two months has the power to set you ahead financially, if you will apply what you learned — and this is the time to do so. Early in the month, there’s some revelation where it all makes sense at once. The underlying theme is that money is not the mysterious thing that it’s made out to be by those who make a living flipping and stripping. It is a practical matter that facilitates other practical matters, and also some of the things you dream of. Yet many of the things that give us the most satisfaction require no funding at all. In our financially obsessed world, we need to remember that every single day. In the age of the $5 cup of coffee, few are the reminders that the best things in life are free. And that includes ideas.

Go beyond appearances — all of them. I suggest that you question anything you do to appear a certain way, from wearing makeup to ‘dressing for the occasion’, to purchasing anything so that others know you have it. Question whether any belief you hold is designed to please another person, or whether it’s coming from the core of who you are. If you notice that you’re presenting yourself in a way designed to conceal something, or to please another person, it’s time to ask yourself the question so rarely asked: why? The answer ‘I do it for myself’ is not adequate now; you need to peel back that motive and see if there is something else. Knowing your real motives will only help you. It will help you, in particular, to move beyond any situation where you do the same thing over and over again, or where you don’t seem to get what you think of as ‘the lesson’. The only lesson you actually need is the awareness of what drives you. Making all of your motives conscious may be challenging and it may shake up certain things you think of as commitments, but at least you’ll be living on honest terms with yourself. It is almost always an unconscious motive that drives us in circles; that creates set-ups that prevent us from attaining what we think of as our goals. That level is usually the hardest to get to, and the most productive. If you get there, be grateful.

Our lives are filled with way too much effort. You have a knack for finding the efficient route, and the blessing of being easygoing enough that you’re able to keep your cool despite the considerable chaos that the world can inflict. But now is the time to focus on a kind of efficiency that will be remarkable even for you. You have a lot to do, and the first item on this agenda is to sort out several items that seem urgent but are not. This will leave room in your life for two focal points. One is a kind of external pursuit; something or someone you want and that wanting can be expressed by action, such as making a major decision, particularly a financial one. The other is an inward quest you may not be aware of yet. That quest is drawing you toward a contradiction about yourself that you’ve wanted to resolve for a long time. It typically has a repelling quality; involving yourself with it has all the allure of setting out to achieve the impossible on a day when your clothes and shoes don’t fit right. Yet something subtle is drawing you in; you may simply feel that it’s time, or you may decide that in order to feel like a complete person you must come to terms with this issue. It involves how you feel about yourself, and you might describe it as finally unraveling the conditions you place on unconditional love.

What happens in your most intimate relationships this month will tell you more about yourself than it tells you about a partner. This is information you’ve wanted for a while, and now it seems certain that you will make the discovery you’ve been seeking. Yes, you have plenty to learn about your relationship dynamics, and this month’s unusual Scorpio astrology — involving both Venus and Mars in your sign — will help you make observations about the person or people closest to you. Yet the planets are set up to reveal one of the most difficult things about human nature, which is the source of what we project. Projection is when someone outside us becomes the subject of a drama that is purely internal. The implication is that the source of an image or a light is inside the projector. Nobody going through a challenge wants to hear that, and it will take some emotional processing to get you beyond any potential self-blame that comes up. One thing I suggest you remember is that the source of this situation is in the distant past. It’s back there, and it involves a specific person. Discovering this will require you to reassign new roles to colleagues and loved ones currently in your life, such as: ‘I had you cast in the role of the one who was holding me back. Now that I see I was doing that, I can give you some other role’.

For months I’ve been hinting at a time when you could start to get things done: the real things, the big ones, the ones closest to your core passions. That time has arrived. Note that the planets are not offering you a free pass to anything — they are offering an extended opportunity to put the best of your talents to work. I don’t mean toil and I don’t mean what the Germans call ‘Sisyphus work’ — pushing the boulder up the hill, only to do it again. To the contrary, your mission is to create such a state of inner harmony, willingness to succeed and authentic passion, that you evoke the cooperation of the world. You need to be observant and see specifically where your talents meet a need, or provide something that doesn’t exist. The key here is being authentic. Authentic, in part, speaks to the specificity of your mission. Your niche is not ‘kind of’ what you want to do, it’s precisely what you want to do and what you do best. This is the objective that, in my reading, the planets are pointing to. So I suggest you pause and refine your plans. Be clear with yourself. Cross off the list anything that is not really supposed to be there. Now is the time to forget the details of how things are going to happen; pour your energy into the creative aspect of your mission and be precisely who you are.

The past few seasons have taken you around a curve in your life, but it was more like taking an endless right angle, half expecting for the car to crack in half. It never did, but you had some tense moments. This goes back to about one year ago. The sensation involved a transit called Saturn square Pluto, and this or something like it happens only about once every nine years. But this was different than any other; it involved not only your ruling planet Saturn, but also Pluto in your sign. At the same time, Saturn made a series of oppositions to Uranus, and the effect was: one thing after the next; this is never going to end; where am I going to get the strength? But you had the strength and you are stronger today. I want to offer one thought from my experience as a counseling astrologer and survivor of many Pluto transits. When such alignments end, there can be a kind of post-traumatic stress. If you’re expecting the next thing to go wrong or shake up your life, consider that potential. Your current planets suggest that you have an open road ahead; that you are free to create plans and bring them into reality. Yet you may find yourself needing to deal with negative expectations first. Don’t stuff those feelings; let them out, listen to them, and allow yourself to have some authentic confidence from having gone through so much so well.

The Capricorn Audio Birthday Report is now ready. This is more than an hour of astrology for Capricorn and Capricorn rising, covering the cardinal T-square from a personal perspective. I’ve also included a 20-minute tarot reading using the Voyager Deck. For instant access, order here for Capricorn and Capricorn Rising. Only $14.95, this also makes a meaningful and economical gift.

Is everything a matter of faith? It may well be. No matter how much preparation, planning, studying and vision you apply to an idea, or to yourself, the last step in the process is faith. You simply trust that you’re doing the right thing, or that you’ve done the right thing. So you may want to consider starting from that point, rather than aiming to eventually end up there. This would be particularly true for any ‘impossible situations’ you encounter, or for anything that you’ve tried dozens of times but never managed to get right. You may be confident you have the fortitude to get through anything. But that’s not the kind of strength you want right now. What you want to stoke is the faith that there is a ray of fairness in the world. You want to feed the fire of equanimity. You want the people around you to trust that the decisions you make for yourself are the right ones, and call nothing less than that love. Short of all that manifesting right now, you need to hold these values openly in your heart. It’s true you’re still living with a contradiction, a seeming split in how you feel about something or someone. Or this may be an inner division over what you want. When a deeper layer of the truth is revealed, you will see that it wasn’t a contradiction because one of those desires was something you could only give yourself.

How’s it going? I trust your sponge is getting soaked again after being wrung out a few times, and that you’re gradually forgetting the long dry spell you went through; those come and go. I trust you’ve sorted out some of the details of a relationship that was draining so much of your energy, and learned the value of detachment. Ah yes, that thing — supposedly, the most challenging lesson for a Fish, so attached to how everyone else feels. Yet with the high-stakes quality of your life lately, that is, with so many discussions where so much seems to matter, you need to be cool. Not to play it cool, but to actually be cool, so that you can use your mind and remember what you want. This is different, indeed, precisely opposite than having expectations or hopes. Think more in terms of demands. Don’t use the word outside your mind or your notebook; maybe call them requirements, or something polite, but be clear that they’re demands; the things without which you don’t commit your energy or time. So, remember what you want and stick to it. Remember to consider every situation you’re in, and consider what it will take to have that situation work for you. Don’t sign any contract or agreement, or make any promise, that you don’t think is eminently, admirably fair. This is also the time to allow what is distant to come to you, rather than you having to go to it. Take a breath and allow.

Sun in Virgo, Pisces Full Moon

Note to Readers: The introduction for this horoscope was published at the time of the Pisces Full Moon. We are now at the time of the Virgo New Moon. For more information about that event, please see this Tuesday edition.

Dear Fellow Traveler:

The Sun entered Virgo overnight Sunday to Monday in most time zones, beginning the last month of the season. Virgo is a mutable sign, which means that its energy is that of dissolving and blending into the next season — when the Sun enters Libra one month from now. The Sun entered Virgo with Mercury retrograde in that sign, and very close to the last Saturn-Pluto square (which was Saturday). Though we feel it in subtle ways, and the exact meaning is not clear, we are in a time of profound transition between eras of history. The feeling, on a personal level, is the sense of constant change, stress and exploring potential that it would take some imagination to describe as progress — and imagination is the very thing we need.

We will get some, with the Full Moon in Pisces [view charts]. That happens at 1:04 pm EDT the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 24. This Full Moon makes aspects to Saturn, Pluto, Chiron, Neptune, Uranus and Jupiter, and trines the lunar nodes — it’s another one of those precipitation points that ‘draws down’ the energy of the slow-moving cardinal T-square.

The whole aspect structure feeds into the Pisces Moon, which might be emotionally or psychically confusing — so it’s a good time to focus on a clearer vision of who you are and what you want. There is an emotional peak involved in this process, which may help you work out a deadlock or blockage about what you feel vs. what you think. Remember that the Pisces Moon always has an absorbent, psychic nature, so you may need to filter a bit. Remember that being open means being open to many different levels of reality. It helps to be selective where you tune in, and be aware that the energy of others may affect you in ways you’re not expecting.

Both of the planets associated with Pisces are involved in conjunctions now, so all things with a Pisces emphasis, and everyone with this sign highlighted in their charts, are coming into view in that soft lunar light. The conjunctions (as you probably know) are Chiron conjunct Neptune in Aquarius; and Jupiter conjunct Uranus (soon to happen twice in Pisces). Note that both of these conjunctions are blending the energy of Aquarius and Pisces, signs that work and play quite well together.

We need that soft, subtle, beauty-seeking Pisces energy in our lives, but it’s often dominated by things like advertising, alcohol and denial. Pisces is the quality of our souls that seeks art, love, passion, sharing and the dissolving of the many, many boundaries that our society has set up. Boundaries are necessary, but too many are detrimental to our ability to share and explore ourselves and one another. So given that there is so much Pisces energy in the sky right now, this is a great time to drop some of your defenses and let in what you can only let in when you’re not in a guarded state of being.

As for Virgo — there is plenty going on there as well. I referenced that in Friday’s edition of Planet Waves Astrology News, describing a truly unusual Mercury retrograde in this sign, which is picking up many facets of psychology from Sagittarius. At the moment, the detail-oriented, self-critical sign Virgo is working as one element with the broad-minded, visionary sign Sagittarius. Both of these signs stand to learn a great deal from one another.

So, as appropriate for the Pisces Full Moon, this is a time of blending, of merging, of exploring the space of overlap between ourselves and the people we care about, and the ones about whom we are curious.

This Planet Waves horoscope for September explores some of these themes.

Yours & truly,

PS: In Friday’s Aries horoscope, a misprint resulted in the meaning of an idea being skewed. The correct word is ‘purge’ rather than ‘urge’. Here is the corrected edition.

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope – September 2010

The only reason developments will take you by surprise this month is because you’ve become distracted by less important things. In particular, I strongly suggest you not get involved in petty dramas and seeming problems in your workplace. These will only ensnare you in trivia. If you’ve already become involved, then snip and slip out of the web, cease giving your opinion and focus on working out old, persistent problems rather than anything that makes its appearance as something seemingly new and exciting. One thing it’s time to consider carefully is if the work you do every day matches your passion, your intelligence and your creativity. If it doesn’t, that could be the root cause of any turbulence in your life. Yet there are deeper regions that the current Mercury retrograde is guiding you to explore, and one of them is your family’s connection to religion. This may be the source of a “work ethic” that consistently guides you away from what you love to do, and what you’re the most talented at. One last factor is understanding the way in which your state of mind influences your relationships. This factor is not imaginary — how you feel, and the thoughts that you think, influence the people who are closest to you. Many of these ideas are, in turn, influenced by your relationship to the past, and that is what is coming to the surface now. Remember: love brings up everything unlike itself.

We often hear the admonition that ‘relationships are mirrors’, and often that works out to be true. Yet there is a mirror we often don’t consider, which is the looking-glass of gender. Part of the ‘other’ we seek in relationships is the seemingly polar opposite that lets us feel or experience existence from the viewpoint of the other sex. The differences between men and women are so exploited that we live with many false ideas about who this mysterious other really is. We make expectations on them, and on ourselves, that emphasize artificial differences rather than natural similarities. And we lose sight of something even more precious, which are the subtle shades of humanity that are authentically male and female, and which give us access to something that we can’t quite reach any other way. Yet what these differences also teach us is that we contain our opposite. That is part of the beauty of the reflection: what we see is interesting or beautiful because it shows us something within ourselves that we don’t usually see. That something exists in same-sex relationships as well, where we see another beautiful or challenging or curious reflection of self-as-other and other-as-self. As Venus and Mars move into your opposite sign Scorpio, you’ll be taken to some deep places on these explorations of the mirror effect in your relationships, and can gain some unusual insight into yourself.

One of your parents had a mental sticking point, and it’s the place where you most often get stuck. This affects your work, your emotional health and most of all, your sense of safety (which could translate into habitual anxiety). In other words, something that belonged to one of them — your father was the likely source — is affecting your life in ways that you may not recognize. The problem is that it’s a blind spot; you can look directly at it and still not see it clearly. Also, you may have a question about whether the issue even exists; in the face of considerable evidence, you still don’t believe it consistently enough to address the situation, or even to have specific information about what to address. The planets are set up such that a new level of truth is dawning on you, in a series of revelations. It’s like you’re unearthing layers of the past, including from past generations, that are influencing your life today, and that you can actually process and let go of. A few of these may take you by storm. Others will gradually come into focus. Whatever you suddenly discover, keep paying attention to the details, and gather your facts meticulously. Be aware that certain aspects currently in force, lasting well past mid-month, could be stirring up more than the usual amount of fear or emotional discomfort. Think of these feelings as being set free and bubbling to the surface. Then let them go.

Yours is said to be an emotional sign, ruled by the Moon. In truth, Cancer is one of the most mentally active signs. The two are related. Mental habits affect emotions and emotional tendencies affect our habits of thought. Think of the emotional realm as the energy source (sea currents) and the mental realm as the resulting expression of energy (waves crashing on the beach). Mercury’s current retrograde in Virgo seems to be suggesting that you reorganize, sort out your ideas and focus your mind. I suggest that if you start deeper, on the level of your emotions, the mental level will sort itself out without much intervention. You can use your frustrations or complications as hints that you need to focus inwardly, though think of this more as needing to meditate and find some inner peace than needing to clean out closets or reorganize your desk. If you’re the genuinely restless type, then cleaning your desk might make a good meditation, but I suggest that your ultimate aim be to move away from the mental realm and go in as deep as you can. Once you do, you’ll see that your immediate concerns are actually of little relevance, and that your energy will shift in the direction of your longterm plans and your true aspirations. Let’s admit, you want more freedom than you have, and the way you’re going to get there is by tuning into the feeling of what it would be like to experience that freedom and letting that sensation guide you home.

In good times and bad, anywhere you go people seem to be obsessed with money. That’s because it’s one of the few tangible ways we have to express power. It can be acquired; it has the potential to make people equal. But more often it stacks the deck in strange ways, creating the illusion that if you have money you’re somebody; if you don’t, you’re not. I think you recognize the futility of this philosophy. You’re also talented at making your money go a long way, and the reason, I believe, is because you recognize the value of money, and invest yours in ways that are actually meaningful to you. Mercury retrograde in your 2nd house — both your cash and your values — suggests that it’s time to re-examine your opinions and attitudes that pertain to your resources. Make sure that your spending is actually in line with your philosophy of life. Most important, make sure that all your cash outlays are accurate. Read your bank statements carefully. Spot-check going back six months. Check the interest rates on various credit cards and adjust your commitments accordingly. You are likely to learn a few things that you didn’t know, but another discovery awaits: your real wealth has nothing to do with your monetary assets. It’s all about what you share with others and what they share with you — those places where the whole adds up to more than the sum of the parts.

Honesty with yourself is not just the core issue; it’s the best reward that you can give yourself. Self-honesty may be the most important necessity faced by our society. Indeed, we live in the midst of an epidemic of denial that many people comment on and few have ideas for how to help our culture sober up. The current Mercury retrograde (through Sept. 12) is bringing many things to the surface, facets of your emotional life that you cannot deny. You may be feeling an urge to criticize yourself for not having worked through this material sooner, or for allowing it to still bother you. I suggest you do nothing of the kind. What you’re experiencing has roots in the distant past, most likely several generations. Multigenerational material has to be worked with carefully, and approached gently. If you take any form of a self-blame position, you’re doing neither. Search carefully the various people on your father’s side of the family who have influenced your life. Look at their patterns of alcohol use, what may have motivated their choices, and how they responded to their limited choices. Don’t be afraid to notice when you were actually treated without any moral or ethical sanity. The idea here is not to lay blame as much as it is to witness what has shaped your character, at a time when you actually can make some decisions about who you are and who you want to become.

The Virgo birthday report will be ready next week. However, I am offering a Mercury retrograde in Virgo report which is like taking a trek on Virgo through the 12 houses of the zodiac. There is an abundance of information in there offered in service of a sign that deserves more attention than it usually gets. Here is the link to connect with that product.

A tense dynamic is gradually leaving your life; it has been slipping away with the season, so gradually you may not even know that it’s gone, though I hope you feel a sense of relief. You’re replacing this tension with an element of stability and familiarity that leaves you free to explore more of the subtle facets of life, and of your own mind. Saturn is now in Libra for the longrun, and Saturn’s presence in your life is easier for you than it is for most other signs of the zodiac — this, owing to a long and deep friendship between this planet and your sign. You may be feeling a deep craving to reveal the true nature of who you are, and to expose your layers. This, rather than doing the usual thing we’re brainwashed into doing, which is to hide them behind several coatings of excuses and ulterior motives. So, take the chance and be real; be true. As you do, you’re likely to discover something that is a threshold in any growth process, which is tapping into what’s called the unconscious level of the mind. Of course, it’s not so unconscious once we’re aware of it, but it has a way of dipping back down below the surface. So keep your inner eyes open. When we see the ways that our fears and self-criticisms have dragged us through the psychic mud, we’ve got that much more motivation to pay attention.

Sex always seems to ask more questions than it provides easy answers. Indeed, with the many ways sex is exploited by people and by business, it’s amazing we have any peace of mind at all. You’re in a healing process right now, one that is focused on your sexuality, though in ways that are not usually discussed in women’s magazines or on Oprah. One involves a deep exploration of your sexual orientation, and by that I include your gender orientation. We are given a lot of rules about what it means to be male or female, and we’ve usually swallowed and digested them long before we know what happened. Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of this involves cultivating your relationship to your feminine side. Men are by modern standards expected to be feminized, emotional, sensitive…women are expected to compete in the business world, leave their children and the household, and act like men, thus suppressing their feminine sides. With Venus about to be retrograde in Scorpio (Oct. 8 through Nov. 18, with early effects beginning now), you’re being summoned to some deep introspection about who this inner woman is, and how she expresses herself in a world still dominated by conflict and consumerism. It seems like you’re embarking on exploring a lost or concealed attribute of your inner nature. She may have hidden herself away because the environment feels so hostile. As regards sex, I would leave you with one question: is it about power, or is it about pleasure?

It looks like your ability to express yourself is at odds with how much you have to express. I suggest you take the long view of your creative process. Rather than focusing on your immediate desires, what are the ideas and projects that have been on your mind for years? What have you attempted many times and not actually brought to fruition? The amount of creative energy that you’re holding in your body, and its particular extraordinary quality, suggest far greater things are possible than you’re currently imagining. Indeed, the petty frustrations that may be hanging you up at work, or that are throwing delays and stumbling blocks into your immediate plans, are part of where your vision is getting stuck. None of those things are really the issue, or speak to the deeper possibilities — I suggest you not let yourself get too hung up. Separate what must be done or solved this week from where you want to be in a year or five years. Or, forget time — consider what is your highest creative vision for yourself, and organize your life and your mind around focusing on that. There’s an element of this that involves how you think of relationships. You may be caught in some old-fashioned (that is, outmoded and painful) concepts of what a relationship is supposed to be. Part of your creative process is reinventing your way into an entirely new concept of love and sharing, despite many past impediments to that.

You have not just turned a corner in your life — you have turned many. Your ruling planet Saturn has been through a series of oppositions to Uranus and squares to Pluto. This has been a two-year project, and the peaks of energy and the most difficult transitions are behind you. Yet I want to caution that you may be carrying trauma in your energy field from so many changes — indeed, what may feel like too many changes. This can affect your sense of wellbeing, of what it’s possible for you to achieve, of your freedom of movement, and whether you’re trusted by the people whose lives you influence. I suggest you suspend your doubts, and work on your own mind and feelings. All of these changes, and all the work you’ve done, both on yourself and in the world, is going to pay off. The signs are likely already there. There have been times when you’ve felt not just safe but invincible, as if you were protected by a force beyond your own understanding. Who knows, that may be true, but your best moments have come at times when by being uncompromisingly yourself, you notice the world moves over and makes room for who you are. As I have said many times, you are on a mission at this time in your life, one that blends the deepest levels of personal growth and the highest calling to leadership. On with the show.

You know you’re intelligent, indeed, in a way that few people get to experience or even know exists: quirky, analytical, able to see five sides of an issue. You have a connection to the future that can seem strange even to you. Yet the discipline and luck that it takes to manifest your ideas can be rare commodities in the world, which tends to want the kind of innovation that was big last year. That said, you’ve recently had a taste of how influential your ideas can be. I think you figured out that there is a connection to being unequivocally yourself in the development of those ideas, which is to say, fearless about who you are. You see, this really is the key. Among the few things that could actually stop you, and have ever stopped you, is hesitation, self-doubt and the odd sense that your mind is divided. These are all deeply personal matters, barely even environmental; true, your relationships can exaggerate the effect, but you know that how you use your mind is all about you. You’re in a moment of relative calm, though it does seem like you have a lot on your mind. I suggest you take whatever you’re working through and make it as simple as possible. Does it come down to money? Does it come down to what’s important to you? Does it come down to the fear of being independent? Name your issue, and address it directly.

I suggest that in your relationships, you count on what you give without even trying. Trust that people are drawn to you for good reasons, though they may not fully understand them. Those reasons are about who you inherently are, which is something that you’ve gradually been getting a grasp on over the years. In terms of what years, let’s count back just seven. That’s long enough, and it happens to define a phase of your existence, your development and your self-discovery that is reaching its last culmination right now, in the current season. It’s true that you’ve paid a price in terms of instability and enduring constant change, both inner and outer. This has been the influence of Uranus in your life that dates back to your birthday in 2003. Around that time a process was set in motion. It took a little while to heat up, though by 2004 the signs were unmistakable. You’ve learned many things, and lots about yourself — among them being, how to exist with any peace of mind on a planet where so little is certain. And yet all the while, you have no doubt noticed that you sacrifice very little when you give up any form of false certainty. Now you’ve reached a point where the benefits of your journey, of your many journeys, will gradually become apparent. Yet you have a few peak moments about to arrive, hinting of the gifts you have yet to receive.

It’s Not Always Like This — But It Is Now

Dear Fellow Traveler:

Astrology is always interesting, but the aspects are not always like this. They don’t always push us so hard to get our lives together, work toward our true goals and get rid of the ones that we don’t really want. At the moment we are in the midst of many slow-moving planets — the Gods of Change, as they were once described by one of the great Brits of astrology — making moves and making many aspects to one another. These aspects, as we are seeing, are profoundly influencing our lives, and the world. Saturday, just hours ahead of the fifth and last Saturn-Uranus opposition, an organization called Wikileaks revealed the truth about the United States-led occupation of Afghanistan. I will have more to say about this in Wednesday’s audio and Friday’s edition.

This astrology and the synchronous events that surround it are not only in preparation for what we are calling 2012, they are the very thing itself: momentous, sweeping changes and the potential for making progress in the dimensions of our lives where we want it the most. I’ve been describing this here and in my other essays as the cardinal T-square, because most of the action is in the cardinal signs.

Saturn, at the moment, is the leading actor. That’s because it’s the planet in direct motion, having recently entered Libra, where it will be until October 2012. Saturn recently made its last of five oppositions to revolutionary Uranus, which has been the high-stakes trip along the edge that we’ve been experiencing through the Obama administration. It is worth noting the stunning synchronicity between Obama being elected the very day of the first of five Saturn-Uranus oppositions on a platform of promising to escalate the war in Afghanistan, and the truth about that war emerging precisely at the last of those oppositions.

We’ve been seeing this astrology play out more superficially as the wild, verging-on-meaningless factionalism/confrontation of ‘progressive’ versus ‘conservative’ that has dominated American politics and so many other facets of life. And for many, it represents the division in our minds between the past and the future that seems so momentous and urgent right now. As this opposition fades, this brutal oppositional energy will be past its peak and slowly fade away over the next year.

Personally, we can now review how we’ve done integrating our most tense opposites, such as the wild polarities we carry in our psyches, our relationships and the contradictions of what we present to the world versus what we really want and believe.

Wikileaks Editor Julian Assange. Check this link for Assange being interviewed by Larry King.

More locally, we reach another peak of energy this month around Aug. 21, when Saturn in Libra makes its last exact square to Pluto in Capricorn. Saturn-Pluto contacts often come with conservative backlash, with fear and with a confrontation with the past — but that’s mainly because we allow them to. We saw a classic fear-reaction backlash summer of 2001, during the Saturn-Pluto opposition that gave us the Sept. 11 incident, the Enron collapse and the Worldcom and Arthur Andersen accounting scandals. That was pure madness, wasn’t it? And everyone went through something unusually intense at the time. That is astrology, the great bridge between the inner and the outer worlds.

This process was connected with another story: Chiron beginning four years in Capricorn, the sign of “the system.” Now Pluto is in Capricorn, treading the territory where Chiron ran vanguard a decade ago. While there are many important transits going on, this one really is the master of ceremonies. This transit is about doing the deep work of confronting the past: our relationship entanglements and our ancestral past, for example. We have the opportunity to completely rethink our relationship to the business and banking establishment that surrounds us.

And Pluto in Capricorn is saying that we need to reconnect to passion. Remember that Saturnalia (the time of the Sun in Capricorn) was one of the most debauched of Roman celebrations, and that the living incarnation of Pluto would look something like Mick Jagger at his peak of energy.

One last note: Mercury is retrograde in Virgo between Aug. 20 and Sept. 12. This is all about taking care of the details. If you follow the well-documented effects of Mercury retrograde, be sure you leave a week or two on either side of those dates to help you avoid complications and make the most of your time and money. The horoscope you have below takes that effect into account. And there are ongoing details on my Daily Astrology & Adventure blog at Planet Waves.

Yours & truly,

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope – August 2010

Your life has been in transition from one moment to the next, one day to the next, week after week. At times it’s been so much you haven’t been sure how to handle it, and you still may not be — this, despite the sense of excitement and potential. Let’s consider that potential and how it’s going to manifest. You go through spurts of bursting with energy, then encounter limits and frustration. At the same time you’re confronted by changes in your environment, your relationships, your workplace, and lately, considerable pressure from family or home-related matters. It’s difficult to see where the two processes fit in: that is, your experience of growth and emergence, and the tectonic changes in the world around you. The next six months or so will be an experiment in seeing the many connection points between who you are becoming and what the world is becoming. What you may have lacked recently — a commitment to flexibility — is what you’re being offered now. Think of that flexibility as your mind responding creatively to your experience. By creatively, I mean self-creatively. Though the changes in your world seem to be the result of powerful forces, there must be nothing forced about your response. When in doubt, retreat and assess your situation, and observe your options, and more to the point, your desires. What you want not only matters, it’s the only thing that does. You have tried every other option; give this one a go.

Aries Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

Suddenly you may have a lot more work than you think you can handle, or want to do — particularly for August, when everyone north of the equator wants to be lazy. Given how many people right now are searching for direction and (think they) have absolutely nothing to keep them busy, I suggest counting yourself as fortunate, and responding with motivation, drive and a sense of purpose. The chances are that your employment-related activities will be a bit stressful, even intense, yet at the same time entirely productive and meaningful. For you, much of the stress seems to be coming from the necessity to do things differently every day, and to make decisions faster than usual, indeed, what seems like immediately. However, if you’ve ever lamented that your life moves too slowly, or that you can never make a choice that you stick to, and that works for you, you now have an occasion to live differently. One special place to focus your attention is on the relationship between your mental health and your physical health. The two are translating back and forth, and you will need to take extra efforts to maintain both. Proceed from the inside out. You don’t need to improve your appearance or your image, but rather focus on rest, nutrition, movement and learning how to make choices without damaging yourself in the process. By damage, I mean from needless stress, unnecessary delays or pointless frustration. Get over yourself, get moving and you will love the way your life unfolds.

Taurus Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

Despite your sense that you can ‘think things through’, that’s not really the case when it comes to feelings; you simply need to feel, and make the appropriate decisions. We’re inclined, indeed, trained to obsess over how we feel, and most of this involves guilt about how we feel. So let’s consider guilt, which is always rooted in childhood. It always has connections to the remnants of our family of origin, and we underestimate the power that these people, and their ideas, have on us as adults. Make no mistake: what you’re going through right now has something to do with that influence. Guilt is resentment directed against itself. We blame ourselves for our parents’ shortcomings, believing they are flawless, and get in the habit of attacking ourselves. When we take this into adulthood it can cause significant emotional and relational problems. You may think you can work this out with them, but at this point there is no such thing. Your mission is to work out your life, your feelings, your needs and your sense of safety, with yourself. Be aware of when you are blaming yourself for the problems and shortcomings of your early caregivers, and be aware of when you’re dramatizing this with the people who currently surround you. You know it’s time for you to push out of your mental anguish and step forth into your full adult creative power. Don’t let the past hold you back.

Gemini Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

Your tropism for reaching high places has been healthy and strong lately. Your perspective is widening and your sense of time is starting to encompass the future. You may even feel the authentic confidence that you can handle anything — and if you don’t feel it, you sense the potential. I suggest you focus on two priorities. One is learning how to focus on a single goal. It doesn’t have to be a big goal, or even an important one: the idea is to get the feeling of setting an objective, meeting that objective and moving onto the next. The second project is feeling safe. You have a little stampede of planets running through the security angle of your chart over the next few weeks, and that might stir up some of your famous insecurities. Feeling safe is an art. It’s related to the craft of recognizing an actual situation that you have to respond to, and responding well. One way to summarize your astrology is that the numerous situations and conditioning forces that surround you are designed to bring out the best in who you are; to cultivate your maturity; and to encourage you to handle your affairs in a way that’s a marked improvement over your parents’ less than effective leadership style. To do that you have to be standing on a strong foundation, and while you have a short break from reaching for the top, I suggest you get to work.

My phone rang at 2 am the other night. It was a young Leo friend, freaked out. She had a house-sitting gig and had arrived home later than planned to discover that Lilly, one of the cats she was watching, had not come home. This was in a wild part of the area, where coyotes roam. She called Lilly, and then heard a faraway cat squeal, then heard some coyotes yelping, then concluded that Lilly had just been eaten. She was beside herself and crying about what a failure she was. I listened to her for a while, dialed in St. Francis and cast the astrology. The chart looked good, and as I woke up, I remembered many feline moments of assuming the worst. I hung out on the phone with her till she calmed down. At first light, Lilly came strolling home after a warm night of sitting under a bush, sniffing ferns or whatever it is that cats do (nobody really knows). I would guess she was never more than 100 meters from the house. August is a growly month, with coyotes yelping and weird sounds in the night. Chiron makes one last visit to your opposite sign Aquarius, giving you a chance to clean up any leftover work in a relationship healing project. Many other planets get into the act and make a lot of noise. I suggest you stay centered and calm, take care of yourself and remember Lilly.

Leo Birthday Audio is coming soon!

You seem to be caught in a time warp, as if you’re retreating into old patterns that are heedless of all the work you’ve done on yourself. Think of this as a cleansing process. There’s always another closet to clean, another organ to revitalize, always something harmful that you can cut out of your diet. Just make sure that for everything you eliminate, you add something you like. For every closet you clean, keep some of the treasures and appreciate what they remind you of. For every aggravating food you eliminate, add one or two things that are nourishing and give you pleasure. A core element of this process involves how you feel about money. There’s a subplot about how you present your finances to the world. Many are intent on showing the world how rich they are; others make a point of how poor they are. I suggest you try for no pretenses, and for doing nothing that ‘makes a statement’. You’re in a phase where your primary financial goal needs to be investing in yourself. Your old attitudes toward money are crumbling or soon will be, and even as they hang on for dear life, the new ones, the more nourishing and creative ones, are coming in. One is necessarily recognizing that financial growth means developing the awareness of money and its power, building infrastructure and maintaining balances, such as between income and expenses, or assets and debt. Just remember, all of this is for real, not for show.

It’s now clear that you’re initiating the changes in your life. This is coming from a commitment so deep that nobody could stop you any more than they can inspire you. It’s a little like when the root of a tree splits apart a huge boulder. That is coming from the life force energy of the tree, and its determination to thrive in its environment. In a similar way, you are putting down roots. You are solidifying something about the nature of your character, and are confident that you’ve found the pattern into which you want to grow your life. With Saturn in your sign for the next two years, you have two special gifts to work with. One is some extraordinarily materializing power. You have the ability to grow things, ideas, projects and enterprises. You need to use this carefully, and be extraordinarily fair in your use of that power. The second gift is the potential for profound psychological growth fostered by potent, mature introspection. No matter how old you are, the next two years will feel like a distinct phase of entering adulthood. Note that those born in the early 1980s are going through their first Saturn return, no matter what Sun sign they’re born under; though all Libras will have a similar sense of transition into what I will describe as a phase of culmination. You are arriving somewhere real, which will serve as a foundation on which to build the next decade or more of your life.

For the past year, your professional life has felt like a minefield. Everything you plan seems to turn into something different. Relationships with companies and government entities have a way of becoming unnecessarily complicated. Your goals seem to slip and slide around, and you’re more subject than ever to seemingly unconscious motives that come out when you least expect it. It’s time to take a new approach that begins with mindfulness rather than action. The wisdom of this may not be clear yet, and in many ways your charts are calling you toward some big quest, goal or adventure. Yet subtler aspects are saying slow down and meditate. You can, if you want, get to the bottom of this situation. While it seems to dramatize itself in the aspects of your life where you reach for achievement, in reality it has more to do with your internal psychology: deep-seated fears, resentment, guilt, and your relationship to the unknown. There is something about the fear of losing it all or being swallowed by a tidal wave. You seem to be walking a razor’s edge of fear that you might abuse your power, then you keep running into people who do precisely that. This is why I suggest you back off from active goal seeking, life planning and attempts to orchestrate the future, and instead take a psychological and emotional approach to your situation. Start with figuring out the ways in which your parents are still running your life.

Every time you get to a point where you think you can free yourself of the details, you discover more details to attend to. Figure this will go on until right before your birthday, when you make a transition into what you would consider to be a more creative approach to existence. Meanwhile, let’s consider the wisdom of focus or over-focus on details. In short, it will work for you, for many reasons. At the moment some of those involve resolving past hang-ups and hangovers. But it’s about much more than that. The particular path to success that you’ve either chosen or wound up traveling is about doing something innovative, creative and highly specific. Sometimes this is called finding a niche market, which is the opposite of brewing up vats of tomato soup from one set formula. You are creating a custom career, which will serve clients that have highly specific, individual needs. This, at its essence, is an exercise in being aware of details, and applying them creatively. The visionary quality is available on the miniature or even microscopic level, and this is your true quest, at the moment. If you persist with love and patience, you will reach that point where you experience the universe as holographic: each moment, each cell, each point of contact, contains the image of the whole. Exploring this property of existence is where your most effective solutions, innovative developments and true sense of direction are going to come from.

You may wonder why you’re in such a position of authority, or why it seems necessary that you get there. Consider that it’s not really authority that you’re seeking, or that you’re known for, but rather your devotion to purpose. Such often calls upon people to take charge and step up to a challenge, or to lead the way for others. Surely seems as though the world is missing those who can do this well. Yet the world is in a crisis of meaning more than anything, and this you have been cultivating beautifully. I recognize that at times you may feel confused, confounded or confronted by reality. You may feel like your security base is challenged every day, and that you’re compensating with raw strength. Yet beneath that potency and strength is something elegant and seemingly small. That is your devotional quality; your ability to understand what and why, and stick to it for years. Under the current transits (and by that I mean this month and in the current years of your life) this is becoming one of the strongest elements of your psyche. Nourish, refine and honor this every day. Look for signs of authenticity in our mad world. Listen for clues that people know what they need or want to be doing, no matter how confused they think they are. See if you can feel the way the whole world is moving in the right direction, and be mindful of all the ways you fit into the process.

A phase of your life is over, and a new one has begun. Yet you seem to have a question about how you handled a relationship, and how you feel about where someone else is with their life, and the role you’ve taken with them. If you’ve taken a heavy hand, you may feel like some of this is coming back at you. But I wonder how much of what you’re perceiving is reality, and how much is a dramatization of your fears — in particular, a phobia you seem to have about being spontaneous. In essence, as you approach the spontaneous moment, you may hesitate, which is not really hesitation but rather a little whiff of what I will call your ‘fear of the worst’. Don’t worry, you’re not the only person who may experience this, but you’re certainly one who has the ability to tap into the power of the experience. Deep in there is a story about modern humanity’s relationship to existence. We’re a society of people who are all about control, which is the opposite of spontaneity. If you find yourself hesitating and you recognize that this is about letting go of control, notice that this is where the life force has the opportunity to slip into your world. Fear is a mask or a veil placed over this. The more intense your negative expectation of what may happen, the more energy, passion and potential the situation contains.

You’ve had a taste of what is possible if you focus your thoughts on what you want to create, if you mind your business affairs and take care of your relationships. Your charts give an excellent image that basically says, the more that what you create resembles you, the more you, and it, will thrive. You see, there really is no ‘it’ in this equation: the poet is the work of the poem. You’re about to discover how what you have created has the power to create you back: imagine a feedback loop, wherein you express something and then receive it with your senses, and refine both along the way. What you’ve experienced through the past three or four months was an experimental phase, which remains in effect now. Think of it as a prototype, and I mean both of process and product. That experiment continues, though for the next six months or so, you have an extended time of reviewing what you’ve done and making adjustments. Note that these are going to be based on what worked rather than what didn’t work. If something didn’t work, notice how or why that happened, take the information on board and quickly move onto what did work. The whole business of learning from your mistakes can only go so far. At a certain point you have to learn from success, and fortunately you have a good bit of that to consider. Check me here, though I can assure you that it comes down to one concept, which is authenticity.

Planet Waves Monthly Horoscope – July 2010

Free will, and freedom in general, are among the greatest challenges that most people ever face. One common response is to panic at the notion of potential and the opportunity to choose. Another is to run away with power and see how much abuse one can foist on the world. But the most common response is to go to sleep and pretend that there is no freedom. As it works out, none of these are viable for you; rather, you’re finally in a position where you must take on both potential and the responsibility of freedom, as well as the power and the sense of danger that comes with it. These are all acting simultaneously on your chart, and therefore your psyche. You have the right to be nervous, but I would not call that a privilege, and I don’t suggest you indulge it any more than is necessary. Simmering down more aspects than I could write about in a good length article, we get one bold theme: you’re ready to step into an expanded vision of yourself. This means being fully present for your own life and showing up for your relationships in a new way. If there’s a sacrifice involved, it’s a kind of habitual insecurity that you ignite on the altar of progress. This comes in the form of one decision that is imminent now that affects both your most intimate private life and your most assertive professional life.

One thing you get to figure out this month is the extent to which your emotions and your thoughts influence one another. I guess a male chauvinist would call this ‘thinking like a woman’, but plenty of men are famous for it. Our whole society, supposedly so male-dominated, seems to be based on an exaggerated form of emoting that passes for reason. To the extent you feel trapped inside something, it may be this very phenomenon. Part of where you get lost is believing that the opposite of sensitivity is brutal rationality: the kind found in law books. Therefore, the obvious place to retreat is into the soft world of sentimentality. By the way, such a trip may be an exaggerated version of your parental drama, wherein you are caught in the middle. Both sides in this supposed struggle for reality are cartoons. There is an emotional basis for intelligence, and all learning is a process of listening, reasoning and synthesis. You’re an intuitive thinker, and you may indeed know things before you know them. If you find yourself demanding proof, the wise thing to do would be to pause for a little while and wait for confirmation. You’re probably not building skyscrapers, chemical plants or nuclear bombs; you’re navigating your way through the uncertainties and creative opportunities of life. A lower standard of proof is appropriate. There’s such a thing as true enough, as long as you leave your mind open to learn more.

You may be afraid that you’re going to lose your focus, so recently discovered after so much effort. But what good is focus if you can’t keep it? It’s a little like being fully committed part of the time. What would happen if you were fully committed all of the time? I know the C word has implications as something you cannot get out of. Yet if you’re unable to do what’s important to you, that also has a feeling of something you cannot get out of. Here’s my theory: you usually don’t know what you want, or you don’t let yourself admit it. When you do know, or when you do admit it, you’re perfectly capable of sticking to a goal. When your awareness slips, so too does your power to achieve. The only thing that’s really changed during the past couple of months is that you’ve been aware of what you want, in specific terms. Perhaps you’ve refined ‘wanting to be a writer’ to ‘wanting to write screenplays’. Somehow you forgot the part about how doing the thing you want allegedly prevents you from doing everything else. Now, all you need is to remember that one thing, without the reminders or accidental opportunities you’ve been lucky enough to have. You really can do this on your own. You have the strength to focus, and you’re finally a good enough sailor to move with the tides of your emotions without drowning.

You’re getting a rare glimpse into how others experience you in your relationships. This is another way of saying you have an opportunity to feel how much you influence the people in your life — and how much they influence you. This is an important topic of study for you now, because your relationships have the feeling of being under some unusual pressure (and I speak here for both Cancer Sun and ascendant). This involves the longterm placement of Pluto in your 7th house of partners. It would be an understatement to say that the metabolism of your relationships is increasing, and that you’re rethinking entirely your role as a partner, lover or spouse. It would also be an understatement to suggest that most people have little sense of how ‘their’ concept of what it means to be in a relationship is an antique that’s been passed down through the generations, and is treated by each new generation like it’s some kind of precious heirloom or brilliant new innovation, when really it’s nothing of the kind. Pluto moving through this house is unearthing many previously concealed dysfunctional, old values, at the same time bringing new life into your desire to connect with individuals, with humanity and with your environment. An unusually potent total eclipse of the Sun in your own sign on July 11 emphasizes the point that one must be one’s own partner first, and anyone else’s partner second.

As far as I can tell, most of what we do in relationships involves compensating for some sense of our ‘self’ being missing or incomplete. That’s why after a while we notice that we ‘don’t quite feel ourselves’ in the relationship, or that we’re not who we want to be; then we get restless and leave the relationship in order to ‘be’ that self. In many ways your whole life has been a quest to go beyond this: to not just define but to actually experience yourself as a whole person, capable of relating to another whole person. What you may not have factored in is that generations of conditioning have led to what you’ve been overcoming. In this conditioning, so common to the human experience, we’re taught to be self-sacrificing before we have the experience of self-actualizing. Events this month will shine some light on your distant past, and that of your family, so that you can see the origins of your tendencies. You may make discoveries about what happened to ancestors, about the folklore through the line of women that has shaped your experience of life, and of certain facts about your gestation that formed you into who you are, and what you are now outgrowing. Note that all of these discoveries will come with a factor of ‘plausible deniability’. The truth will be easy to evade, and equally possible to embrace, if you are willing. By now, you are surely able.

You may sense or fear that an impact is coming, and you’re tired of living like a shock absorber. With any luck those days are behind you, though you have one little project left: learning how to stabilize your feelings about yourself. Much of the impact you take comes from various judgments you inflict on yourself. Most of these, in turn, come from not having the same opinion of yourself from day to day; and you might want to address this point. You could, for example do a study and determine who you are, and establish what kind of a person you are, and test that out and see if it’s true. What I’m wondering, though, is why you’re so obsessed with your opinion of yourself, no matter what that turns out to be. Perhaps you’re doing the job of someone whose judgments of you were dire and negative. One possibility is that the whole exercise proves you exist. This became like a burden you took on, feeling like if you did all the judging, they would never get the chance. There is now someone in your life presenting a different influence entirely, whose example is teaching you how to let go of your self-conscious quality. This person’s influence is saying: your concept of ‘self’ is a trap, and if you can let go of that, you can find the way to freedom. And that, by the way, is the ‘impact’ you sense arriving.

Saturn enters your sign this month. After a brief visit earlier in the year, it retreated to Virgo and will now spend the next 24 months right with you. This journey starts off with some thunder and lightning: the 5th and final opposition of Saturn and Uranus, capping off a sequence of events that began on Election Day 2008. The prior four oppositions took place in late Virgo and Pisces, veiled from your direct view. July’s event is the one and only opposition across the Aries-Libra axis, which makes it especially personal. Saturn’s role is to help you tie up the loose ends in your life, and there seem to be many. I suggest you over-emphasize matters of commitment, consistency and follow-through. There will be times you’re called upon to make firm, clear decisions, which may contrast with the style of wait-and-see you inherited from your child-self. Remember that you’re only and always deciding one thing, which is who you are. Many external forces are influencing you to change and grow. Yet something deeper and more substantial is at work, which is a return to the deepest core of your self-awareness and fundamentally come to terms with both your true nature and your true potential. This is about taking action, and one thing you can be confident of is that when you do that, the world will rise to the occasion and meet you full on.

You’ve been in pursuit of your core creative fire, and so far this has been an interesting jaunt. Plenty else is going on around you. But most of it has been developing in the next room over, speaking in the psychic sense of that: you’ve known it affects you. You can now shift your focus to this other objective: actively removing the emotional impediments to action. Let’s call these two things project one and project two. Project one has called on you to give up attachment to your goals as a way of accessing something deeper in yourself, what we could call a pure essence and a devotion to service. Project two is about attaining your goals, while keeping that pure essence fully in your awareness. You are now embarking on a new path of achievement without compromising your integrity. This tells you something about the order of operations: integrity check first, then actions taken in accord with that, and then a return to the level of integrity to verify that you’re focused the way you need to be. As you do this, you’ll have a new sense of accomplishment: a bit like riding a bicycle without training wheels for the first time. You will know that you’re the one maintaining your focus, devotion and cultivating your faith as an act of will. The next few weeks contain potent astrology that establishes patterns and magnifies intentions. What you do now will help you for many months.

You are an optimist. You know that if you expect things to go wrong they are much likelier to; and you’ve proven to yourself many times that if you envision things going well, that’s a kind of implicit choice. The question we all face is how to handle obstacles, and the optimist’s method is to turn them into opportunities. It seems ‘the world’ has some catching up to do with how much you’ve accomplished, with how creative you are and with how passionate you are about what you do. You might ask: why does ‘the world’ make it so difficult for someone to succeed? The answer can be found in psychology. Let’s say someone pretends to be something that they’re not; and then they meet someone who is that actual thing. How is the pretender going to respond? A bit of jealousy, perhaps? A bit of anger and insecurity? And how might they compensate? Which brings me to a story around your father that’s appearing in bold colors. Imagine you had a parent who had these very characteristics. Perhaps they concealed it through some haze of denial, ambiguity, ‘nice guy’, alcoholic or gone missing. As a kid, you made up a story to compensate for those deficiencies; then one day you realized your story was not true. This means one thing, at least: you don’t have to live up to his supposed expectations, because most likely you conjured them up yourself.

You may feel like you’re being pushed beyond your limits, but they’re precisely the limits you don’t want. You may be coming up to the age-old question: am I changing, is my partner changing, or is a relationship changing? The answer is all three. You may wonder whether you’re willing to take on all the responsibility (and for some, authority) that is being handed to you, and the answer is: why would you be getting it if you were not ready? Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt more confident and safer on the planet? If so, I suggest you look closely at what was influencing you, though I’m inclined to think that this moment is the time when you’re working with the most solid foundation you’ve ever had. The reason is because you finally feel safe embracing change. You know that security comes not from false confidence in who you are, but rather from embracing a measure of uncertainty and appreciating the value of mystery. You’ve probably figured out that the things most people think make them safe don’t actually do so, and that most attempts at being certain of who one is involve clinging to what their parents taught them. You seem more determined than ever to break free from these false notions of security, and the best step you can take now is to encourage the people around you to do the same. This will be the true test of your confidence.

This month, the two rulers of your sign — traditional planet Saturn and modern planet Uranus — face off for the fifth time in 19 months. The opposition moves toward a conjunction that takes place in 2032, so let’s say this is an important aspect, aided by many other factors. For example, the signs involved are Aries and Libra, rather than Virgo and Pisces. The net effect is that things you’ve been thinking about, perhaps obsessively, are about to translate into a rapid sequence of decisions, movement and action. Your planets say you’re done being reactive; you’re done being defensive; the time when you make the second move has drawn to a close. You might notice your tendency to need something to push back against, or to define yourself by what you are not. Part of what the Saturn-Uranus opposition offers is healthy contrast. You’re learning to see things in more vivid shades than you have in the past, which is a form of commitment. I suggest that you think back to November 2008, when this process began. What can you see clearly now that was not so easy to observe then? Count the ways in which you’re obviously different than certain people you come into contact with on a regular basis. You seem to have noticed this before, though you were less likely to think that the distinctions were meaningful or worth acting on. What is your opinion today?

Your astrology this month is all about stepping into a more visible role as a contributor to culture. It’s as if a veil gets pulled back, revealing who you are. From the outside it looks like you have some kind of creative role, and like you take the chances to bring that quality into your experience. Obviously you’ve taken some chances, though you may at times wonder what good that did. I assure you it did as much good as anything can, which is to both cultivate and preserve your passionate approach to existence. Take away any one of those daring endeavors and you wouldn’t be the same person, nor would you be in the same place you are now. Yet behind that veil is something else: the ability to have not just impact but actual influence. You’re part of a changing world, and you’re part of that process of change. This is what becomes undeniable. Yet to get there, you must shed some baby fat and a few other childhood tendencies. In order to take on your new role, something about your old role must transform entirely. In your new incarnation you’ll take with you all the talent, commitment and sensitivity you started with, and leave behind your insecurity, abandonment and tendency to struggle. Looked at one way, you are about to grow up fast. Looked at another, you’ve reached an inevitable threshold of development that you’ve been eagerly awaiting your entire life.

June 2010: Wave Pulse of Awareness

Dear Planet Waves Subscriber:

I trust that by now you’re aware of a 14-year conjunction that occurs on June 8, and that I’m proposing this as the inauguration of the 2012 era. Jupiter and Uranus enter Aries (Uranus, this week!, within moments of the Sagittarius Full Moon), and this turns on the Aries Point at full strength: the meeting place of the individual and the collective dimensions of existence. We’re accustomed to events that happen in aspect to the Aries point; this month Jupiter and Uranus will be conjunct exactly on the Aries Point. It is true that many aspects are working together to create the full effect of this threshold, particularly a gathering of planets in early Aries, Libra and Capricorn. We have grown accustomed to thinking of this as something in the distant future.

French astrophotographer Thierry Legault captured a view of shuttle Atlantis and the International Space Station crossing the face of the Sun (called a transit of the Sun) on May 16, 2010 about 50 minutes before the shuttle docked with the ISS. Legault took the image from Madrid, Spain at 13:28:55 UT.

I propose that if we want to understand the meaning of 2012 — and I believe it has a distinct message for us — we need look no further than our present moment: with its blended sense of potential, fruition and catastrophic quality. Yet the potential is not necessarily showing up as some major transformation liberating you from everything that holds you back (as happens in the spiritual fantasies of many), nor does the disaster seem to involve the Grand Canyon turning upside down, oceans flooding the continents and the magnetic poles shifting overnight.

You could call that kind of thought mystical porno. Potential is subtler than that; geology tends to be incremental. Yet if you were to play the past 10 years in time lapse, be they events of your life or of world events, you would be amazed. And you just might wonder why you didn’t take so many other opportunities when you had them. You might wonder what it was that was influencing you to be so cautious, to hold to the past or to stick to what is familiar.

The wave pulse of the astrology, combined with the events that play out in the planetary drama, is quite strong right now, and it’s natural to be feeling like you want to be doing something else, free of your routine, your mental patterns, or the limits of your relationships. Now is the moment to ask yourself exactly what that means and how it would feel to have that happen. Not so much how you would do it, but rather the feeling tone of the success you want.

You might question the value of making a move when you feel like you’re under pressure, or extremely restless, even if you’ve had the same message over and over. I would ask: when else would you take real steps toward what you want?

One question that the (supposedly) newly awakening may be asking is: why does it have to be that just as I begin paying attention to what is possible in my life, so much seems to be going wrong in the world? Well, it’s not just now. Plenty has been going wrong throughout the course of industrialism; we tend to pay attention either to what is directly under our noses, or what our awareness level allows in. The truth is we’ve been through many events that should have ‘woken us all up’, and as a culture, as a group entity, we tend to let them go by without making any real changes.

That said, we live in a point of no return, whether we recognize it or not. It’s a dangerous spot we’re in, as is any true evolutionary moment, and that is precisely what we have: a moment when concentrated evolution is possible. The misconception to get over is that this is something that happens to us rather than something that comes from us. Life is not a movie. There is no writer, except for you; no director, save for yourself. And at the same time we are each creating with the choice to be in harmony or out of harmony with energy movements that surround us.

A significant piece of the danger involves noticing what we’ve lived in denial of for so long: such as relationships that don’t meet our needs, unprocessed anger at our families, and so many ways of life that deny our true personhood. And we might not have thought about our brilliantly enlightened moment as the day when we finally get into a therapist’s office and start talking about this stuff, so we can finally stop having it run our lives and our relationships — or the day we write the first few notes of music, or the first few words of a short story, or visit someplace we’ve needed to go for a long time.

In a recent edition of Planet Waves Astrology News, I described our current astrology as a moment of self-actualization, the opportunity to be aware of the moment we are in, and rise to the occasion. Here is that article, in case you want to read (or reread) it.

Self-actualization is another term for what we now call ‘spiritual growth’ or ‘personal development’. Something tangible is implied in the idea, which is authenticity: the key concept is actual, which means real. It would be an understatement to call this a get-real moment. In the horoscopes that follow, I’ve done my best to explain how this looks, for the 12 signs of the zodiac. I plan to have an extended audio edition of the June planets available by the first. This will include an introduction and then shorter pieces that cover each of the 12 signs, available as one work, so that your Sun, Moon and ascendant (and those of your friends) are all included. Please watch for that announcement.

Yours & truly,

Do we ever really reinvent ourselves? Sometimes we do. Often we do not. As much as we strive to turn over new leaves, write new chapters, get a spiritual makeover, make a new effort at self-improvement, change our image, color our hair, strike off in a new direction, stop letting the family define our reality, we do very nearly everything in our power to resist real change. We have many tools for this, and most of them are relationships. Then one day it happens. Despite everything, we suddenly find ourselves rapidly becoming someone else, doing something different, living another life. It may be wildly different than anything we thought possible, or thought of at all. These are the changes that emerge from the inside and then somehow take us to other places on the planet, or make us thirst for new knowledge, or crave freedom from everything we knew in the past. And that is the moment you are in. You’ve had plenty of time to consider your potential, and by now you know what you want: to be at peace, all you need to do is admit your truth to yourself, and then let go into the flow. There will be time later to reflect on what you’ve done, to revise your ideas and to try a new approach: but this first go is the most meaningful one. It’s the moment when you say yes to yourself: a moment of faith and adventure.

I’m sure you’ve had one of those dreams where you discover you have a new wing in your house, or that a closet leads to a whole other building. These dreams seem to have one thing in common, which is how normal the discovery is, like the thing was always there, and how could you have missed it? That is the approximate feeling of your astrology this month: an inner dimension opening and welcoming you in, but one that was always there. You may be inclined to respond as if this is ‘not really happening’. You may doubt: how do you know if this discovery is really you, or the product of your imagination? (Clue, it is both at the same time.) You don’t have to ask questions. If you want to do something practical, step across the inner threshold and see for yourself. The feeling is the calling of any potential, talent or dream that has opened up for you lately. The inner space that’s opening up has different rules. You can, for example, say yes to yourself. You don’t have to define your reality with fear, or honor the limits that fear previously set. In fact you don’t need to believe anything that you previously believed, and furthermore, you can define who you are as a mystery rather than something, or someone, who you’re supposed to be able to predict. If you can get past how nervous this might make you, you’ll have a lot of fun.

You’re in a unique position of leadership, and I mean unique in the true sense of the word: for you, this is once in a lifetime, and truly original in expression. How you interpret that notion will depend on how you feel about yourself. One way to go would be to take charge in your own life — the only true leadership there is. The other option is to keep dreaming, to keep wishing, and wonder what mysterious force will deliver you to your destiny. It’s unlikely, though, that you will be able to take a passive role. You’re at a rare turning point that relates directly to your life calling, your sense of mission and this elusive issue of acknowledging your power. You may feel that you’ve waited too long to do this; you may feel the demand for authenticity and mandatory integrity has come upon you too soon. This seeming paradox is one of the effects of Chiron in Pisces, your 10th solar house. Yet if you look at the equation in a balanced way, and consider what you’re experiencing, you will see that you’re being given information (not an answer, more like a question that is focused enough to get an answer) that helps you resolve a deeper issue: the older one of having only a vague sense of purpose. What you are experiencing now is, very specifically, a sense of purpose that is trying to get your attention. You are being called. It is your option to answer.

How many people get to do exactly what they want, or what they know they came here to do? What stops some and what facilitates others? Looking around, why does it seem that some humans — right in the same culture — get to write science fiction floating around on a wooden sailboat, while others have to collect trash? And since you’re somewhere in the middle, what determines where on the continuum you get to be? We could look at all kinds of worldly advantages: the trust fund, buying a load of Microsoft stock in 1986, knowing the right person. We could credit shrewdness. We could say that one’s karma allows or disallows certain potentials (and more of us believe this than care to admit we do). Your charts suggest that the approach to life that will get you where you want to go is envisioning what you want without giving credence to any idea that it’s not possible. For some it is challenging to envision the existence of their dreams — there seem to be so many quirky facts, mediocre people and global disasters in the way. If you have been trying to envision your dreams for a day or for 50 years, you have arrived at the breakthrough point. It’s not merely that nothing is impossible, it is that anything is possible, so therefore, choose from the depth of your passion. Clue: it’s an easy feeling.

It’s time to stretch every horizon. The first one to expand includes your vision of what is possible, of who you are and of what you can achieve. I’m aware how challenging it is to do this even if you’re ‘good’ at it, though you do have help. What you’re really changing is your idea of who you are, as if some ‘higher self’ version of you contained on another level is flooding into your personality, displacing your ego and offering you the sensation of your most enlightened self. While you’re stretching horizons, don’t forget the boundaries of place that so often seem to hold you back. You’re someone who can make anyplace interesting, though now unusual locales are calling you, as are friends from other parts of the world — some of whom you may not know today. And while you’re stretching, take the next few weeks and lean into some expanded ideas of what is possible. The truth is: you can do anything, particularly using this moment as your fulcrum. How do you get there? In a word, faith. Faith is not something you need a lot of. All you need is a little. What some spiritual traditions call the ‘greater faith’ reaches back to you, responding to your call; the greater light joins your small light. You initiate the process, with your commitment to dare, to see, to embrace your life. That is the invitation for divine providence to make the next move.

Relationships either help set us free to be who we are, or they limit who we are. This is the choice we have. Generally, every relationship is an agreement to live one way or the other, until we remember that we only have one relationship: self to other. The decision you’re now making involves reaching from your core and seeing the continuity of every encounter that you have: longterm, short-term, ‘sexual’, ‘platonic’, committed, casual, or whatever. At the core of that continuity is your understanding that relationship is an agreement to be free or to be a slave; to give yourself, or to be taken; to exchange, or to take advantage of. Our society is not as clueless about this as it was, say, even 50 years ago. Yet the marriage contract, society’s model of relationship, has not fundamentally changed in that time, and there are many movements to make it more restrictive, not less. You, however, can no longer be defined, or limited, by these kinds of unquestioned, prefab contracts. Your Self must have the freedom to explore, to expand, and to individuate in every encounter. It is true that you have chosen relationships as your own primary method of getting to know yourself, so withdrawing is not an option — and given the incredible potential of your human encounters, there seems little point in that. Indeed, current aspects are likely to represent the actual moment when you’re drawn out of your shell, into experiencing the true potential of love.

Your charts this month leave me wondering how much change and innovation one human being is capable of embracing. In astrology it’s a good idea to understate the case, so I will put it this way. You have lived with one order of reality, or known construct of reality, for a while. That includes an idea of who you are, a life pattern and most of all, a relationship pattern. On several different accounts, you appear to be in a process of a top-to-bottom revision of all of these things. Don’t worry, it’s going to last for a while and you don’t need to make all your adjustments at once. Yet the current moment has a particular rarity, which is that if you keep your mind’s eye open, you will be the beneficiary of a vision for how good things can be in the future. One property of this process is that the more change you’re willing to abide, the more potential you can activate. For a while, you have the ability or potential to resist, though Saturn’s imminent journey through your sign suggests that you are at a maturity point that will enable you to handle some significant progress. You will do yourself an enormous favor by thinking of your experience as something that emerges from inside of you rather than as something in your environment — this, even as your environment starts to vibrate and light up and morph into something new before your eyes.

You have often let your work define you. The time has arrived for you to define yourself and your work. Depending on who you are this will be one of the most creative phases of your life, or a phase where you feel so confined that you begin a revolution, so that you can do more of what you want. I would remind you that we live in a society that alternately signals us with ‘do what you love and you will prosper’ and, to the contrary, ‘why do you think they call it work?’ Even those who find themselves highly successful in a chosen field can find themselves confined by their schedule, their creative demands and by a routine. In recent years, something else has taken over, which is your willingness to take risks, and to enrich yourself creatively. Some of the experiments have worked, some have not, but one thing is clear: you are determined to express yourself. This, in turn, translates into determination to be free within your environment. It also translates to something deeper, which is standing uncompromisingly in your truth, and taking action only from there. You can do this; I propose that you’ll discover that the barriers and reasons you felt you could not do this were a kind of mirage. These, in turn, will reveal the deeper material that you can work out through your process of self-creation, which is creative process, which is your personal form of art: yours and yours alone.

You know that the risks you take don’t just involve you. They involve everyone in your world, because so many people depend on you — and you like it that way. Yet what if one day you woke up and you didn’t have to worry about all of them; what if your only necessity was to consider your own options? This would remove the source of nearly all of your fears, and open up a wide horizon of possibilities that seemed impossible before. I suggest you work with this for a while. It may be one of the biggest risks you can take, and you will likely find this exciting. I’m not saying you have to do anything, or try anything; rather, I am proposing that you consider a collection of ‘what ifs.’ What if you were not bound to your current place? What if you could tap your fiery, inventive energy? What if you had the focus to stick to a new challenge long enough to bring it to fruition? What if you could tap into an energy source that you know you carry around with you? What if you could tap into the deep wisdom of the past? What if you were clear about how you feel, rather than about what you believe philosophically? Now add five or 10 of your own questions and see if you can detect a pattern to the answers. There is one. And you are in a rare moment when you can act on the truth that the pattern reveals.

You fancy yourself a stable person — but what does that mean? Every week and nearly every day brings a new challenge to which you have to adapt. What has remained constant is your view of the past, and key values from your past that you’ve used continuously to define your life. When was the last time you reevaluated everything that has happened before? You may have done this once — there are few possibilities as to when, though a time that stands out is the mid-1990s. That seemed to be a moment when you separated yourself from history and in a sense started your archeological clock over. What you’re doing now is different: it’s a reevaluation of a ‘safe’ definition of who you are that appears designed to provide you with predictability. In reality, it’s designed to provide a self-definition consistent with what was expected of you as a child. True, since you define yourself as so fiercely independent, you may disagree with this, and I wish I could know the points of contention — I suggest you work with each of them. These objections are actually a kind of ‘argument against who you are’ that is coming from the past: from people who defined their purpose as being secure, who never stepped into their own original existence, and who are in the end quite different than you. If I could sum up your current revolution in one sentence, it’s that you no longer need to do their bidding.

I’ve said before that for a person who loves ideas as much as you do, this is a great time to be alive. You are in territory where you can surpass all limits, yet to get there you need to embrace an idea that is rarely spoken of: intellectual freedom. You understand this intuitively, of that I am certain. Yet because we live in a society that so desperately tries to repress anything it does not understand or that does not follow today’s economic rules, we’re all a little hobbled here. You have a special advantage: you seek yourself in the free expression of ideas. They may belong to you; they may belong to someone else — but you know a free idea when you see one, and you are gathering the momentum to bring something you love and value to fruition. You’ve spent a lot of time, perhaps years, thinking about how much you love and value this concept — whatever it is. Now you have an opportunity to do something about it. I am sure you sense the potential: to help people, to establish a new kind of beauty within planetary consciousness. The ingredient you must work with is a form of discipline called focus. Yes, odd synchronicities will guide you on your way, but you need the full strength of your mind on this gig. And I suggest you beware of a factor that feels like living two lifetimes at once. Through this endeavor, you will finally integrate them.

Aquarius birthday audio is coming soon — thanks for all the emails!

Imagine you woke up one morning to FedEx ringing your doorbell, signed for an envelope, and were staring at a letter. “Dear [add your name]: It is my pleasure to inform you of a trust account that was established for you at the time of your birth. One of the conditions of the trust was that you would be informed of it at this time in your life, when you were ready to receive and make the best use of it, and that time is now. Please contact us at your earliest convenience so that we may make arrangements for the transfer of funds.” Astrologically, it’s better than money, and better than something that is handed to you. Money is suggested strongly in the aspects — potentially in the form of a highly lucrative idea. This would likely come in the form of a new approach to something you are doing now, or have been working toward. You’ve come further along this journey than you think, and you’re at a breakthrough point. That arrives in the form of believing in yourself without hesitation: the deep rooting of your self-respect into your psyche. When your potential is released, the form comes in with the feeling, the actual sensation, of authentic faith in yourself. You cannot feign this; and you cannot thrive without it, so I suggest you welcome the feeling warmly, walk gently in your confidence and remember that this is your passport to whatever you want.

Chiron in Pisces: Special Edition Monthly Horoscope

Dear Planet Waves Subscriber:

For those who appreciate the concept ‘holistic’, I have some astrology news for you — Chiron in Pisces. We think of holistic as something like going to a naturopathic doctor, though it has much wider implications. Here is a succinct Wikipedia definition. The concept of holistic (from holos, a Greek word meaning all, whole, entire, total) is the idea that the properties of a given system (physical, biological, chemical, social, economic, mental, linguistic, etc.) cannot be determined or explained by its component parts alone. Instead, the system as a whole determines in an important way how the parts behave. Or, looked at another way, every ‘part’ contains the whole or represents an accurate picture of the whole system.

The Earth is the original holos, a complex system of interrelationships that adds up to more than the sum of the parts.

As of Tuesday morning, April 20, Chiron is now in Pisces for the first time since the 1960s. It made its ingress within hours of the Sun entering Taurus. Still considered a new element by most astrologers, this small body was discovered orbiting our Sun in 1977. Chiron has a strange orbit; it spends just 18 months in a sign when close to the Sun (as it did in the mid-1990s) and seven to nine years in a sign when distant from the Sun (as it is doing now). This makes a sign-change a particularly special occasion at this point, and Chiron in Pisces arrives with a new feeling, shifted sense of reality and a new healing agenda.

The Aquarius-Pisces cusp, where Chiron is now (on the Pisces side, as of today), is a part of the zodiac that is about whole-systems consciousness. These are signs near the end of the story of the zodiac, and as a result they take on vast topics and have a long history. The mental/intellectual quality of Aquarius and the creative/intuitive attribute of Pisces together expand our awareness and help us see ourselves and our issues from a viewpoint that is distinct from what we think of as individual. Chiron’s presence here calls our attention to the necessity to see ourselves as part of something larger than ourselves, and subtler than the physical world.

At first these shifts may be difficult to discern, though they are likely to be a new form of a message you’ve been getting for a while. Chiron is, for many, a background presence. Consider that for the five years that Chiron was in Aquarius, we saw a gradual explosion of Internet use — but the change is subtle unless you consider it all at once. Most places it’s more than doubled the past few years, and the number of portable devices seems to be growing faster than anyone can keep track. Usage of Facebook has surpassed Google. That’s an image of Chiron in Aquarius: a vast web of interconnectivity.

Pisces addresses even larger systems, which don’t necessarily need as much technology to hold them up, and Chiron tends to enhance our experience of any sign that it’s transiting. Think of the Internet as a simplistic model of something that already exists: the subtle sphere of consciousness that is biopsychic — the web of life that connects everything and everyone. What if we tuned into our ability to connect with that level of awareness, as a natural experience?

Garbage from around the world ends up in the North Pacific Gyre, a patch of trash — mostly plastic — the size of Texas. This image, though unidentified, is probably Hawaii, which experiences plastic beaches like this as a result of garbage flow through the gyre.

In many respects, Chiron in Aquarius has been a study in form — the particular form that communication takes, such as what kind of device or networking system is used. Pisces is about the content; the creative dimension, which will be emphasized by Chiron’s presence here. Many people fear that they’re not creative; Chiron says it’s about consciously wanting the experience, and then directing one’s awareness there.

This creativity factor involves our relationship to what we think of as God or to our spiritual source. We tend to live as if separated from that source (something easily discerned by observing ourselves and others as we make decisions). Chiron is calling us to full awareness of either direct contact, or our sense that we lack contact. This way we can start taking steps to get what we need and healing issues that can only be resolved through a full-awareness approach.

On the way there, we’re likely to encounter the denial factor, which is the shadow side of Pisces. We know that we deny plenty just to get through the day, and much else besides because it’s inconvenient or threatens our concept of the world. Chiron in Pisces is likely to serve as a force that pulls back the veil and reveals the truth of many issues we would prefer not to look at. Most of them involve the interrelationships between the levels of society and ecology: how advertising pushes us toward ecological destruction; how abuse of mood stabilizers alters our involvement in politics or the economy; how many of us shape our self-image through video games, fashion ads and TV commercials, and aren’t even especially concerned about this. Yet are these really the exemplars we want to be using? And if not, what do we want to hold as an example?

Through July 20, we have a warm-up of Chiron in Pisces. Then Chiron will retrograde back into Aquarius, where it will stay until February 2011, when it returns to Pisces for the next eight years — to be our constant companion through whatever it is that we are calling 2012.

Chiron in Pisces: 12 signs of Audio by Eric Francis

Dear Cousin and Client:

My Australian colleague Yasmin Boland called me up last week and suggested that I do a set of audio recordings for Chiron in Pisces. She knows I’ve been writing about Chiron for 15 years and that good information is difficult to come by. After writing several other articles about this transit, including the May monthly horoscope, I dove into the audio — and it’s now ready.

Eric Francis.

Chiron in Pisces promises to be an extremely interesting transit — and for those of us who are attuned to the feminine side of life, to nature, to our emotional world, to spirituality and to the planet as a whole entity, this is transit is welcome news. We now get about three months of Chiron in Pisces before it retrogrades back into Aquarius on July 20. It will then return to Pisces to stay for eight years in February 2011. This is our test run; our first experiment; our opportunity to explore this energy and find out what role it’s going to have in our lives.

This audio set is an awesome, economically priced product that gives you a wholesome introduction to both Chiron and Chiron in Pisces (about 20 minutes) and then takes on the 12 signs in individual recordings of about six to eight minutes in length. I go through the implications and my theory of Chiron in Pisces through each of the 12 solar houses. I suggest you listen to your Sun, your rising sign and your Moon sign — though there is good information for everyone, in each of the recordings.

We’ve priced this to be affordable — $14.99 for all 12 signs and the intro, which you can listen to as many times as you want. It’s like a mini-audio book on Chiron in Pisces. Remember, this is the beginning of the conversation, a kind of welcome wagon — this will be an exciting, long-term transit that will change the world in subtle, beautiful ways.

Please use this link to order. Delivery is instant. And please let me know how you like it.

Thanks for checking it out.

Yours & truly,

In many ways you live an existence driven by idealism and fantasy, but this fact is often veiled from your awareness. You’re more likely to consider yourself a pragmatist or someone bent on achievement, and lately you’ve been true to form, bringing new determination to the idea of meaningful success. With Chiron transiting into Pisces, your focus shifts to seeking understanding on the deepest levels of your psychology: your hidden life and your spiritual dimension. Chiron in Pisces is an awakening point to delve into what you may think of as the ‘other side of your personality’ but which is really a deep inner well that is as much part of you as the aspects of yourself that you encounter in normal consciousness. You may have noticed that in recent years, despite your focus on your adult priorities, your imagination has become more like that of a child. Images mean as much as words. The harder you work the more you need to escape. Yet it’s often been difficult to concentrate the energy in a productive way. You’ve become more curious about the nature of your soul, yet it’s often challenging to find a practical home for this quest in the world. Chiron in Pisces is an opportunity to open up dependable access to those dimensions of yourself. If you feel slightly uncomfortable at the prospect of this, or if your early experiences make you stop and question your reality, you’re on the right track.

Aries Birthday Audio by Eric Francis is available. Check this link for more information.

In the background of your life for as long as you can remember, you’ve struggled to fit into the world. This experience has been so pervasive that it’s tended to disappear, punctuated with moments of mystery about why you could not find your way. Then the intensity of the issue began to grow, and at times focused into outright crisis. What should you be doing, and if you have an idea of what, then how? Chiron in Pisces is here to help you focus your aspirations in a way that combines three elements of life: expressing your most authentic dreams, tapping into your financial potential for your true career, and taking part actively as an authentic part of a group or subculture. What we think of as ‘community’ is an integration point: the key element and not a luxury. This quest requires that instead of being judgmental of your ideas, creative efforts and past experiences, it’s time to open up and allow the energy to flow through you. You have kept many of your most creative ideas secret for a long time, literally blocking energy, and you’re now being summoned into public view. The purpose of what is commonly called creativity is not merely to develop yourself and your mind, but also to help create a shared experience that allows you and others to open up to life. The goal is not perfection, success or applause but rather a shared meeting space where everyone can thrive.

Coming Soon! Taurus Birthday Audio.

You may be aware of how you would live boldly in a perfect world, rather than the edgy, competitive place we find ourselves at the moment. You are suited for leadership in a place that honors the softer aspects of human nature; that makes space for the hidden life we all possess; that is less concerned with profits than it is with embracing love and peace. Chiron in Pisces is here to awaken you to the fact that whatever state the world may be in, your life needs to be oriented on these subtler attributes of existence. In particular, the work you do every day would benefit from harmonizing with the spiritually or creatively oriented energy of Pisces. The chances are you already have a vision for a professional life that would be something like this, but you don’t necessarily say anything about it. Part of you may be too cynical to believe it’s possible. In your belief system, it may not be possible all at once, but it’s something you’ll be steadily growing toward over the next 10 years, as you move from a kind of active dream state to enacting concrete ideas. Here is an image: Imagine you live near a river, in a time when rivers were safe and clean. Every day you go to the river and gather water and bring it to where you live. Then one day you figure out that you can build a pipe and divert a little of that water on a constant basis, and have it transported to where you need it.

We all have issues with faith. We live on a planet and in a society where a lot can go wrong, and most of how we defend ourselves is by the prowess of intellect: planning, analysis and efforts aimed at control. Yet your usual methods are giving way to a process of visioning the possibilities, and in particular, the possibility you want to manifest. Chiron in Pisces is another way of saying vivid imagery. Therefore, focus on envisioning exactly what you want to manifest, create or become. And among them is a vision of yourself, which rightfully would begin with the feeling of what it’s like to live guided by faith in yourself. This transit will help you tune into the emotional cycle wherein you seem to lose and gain that faith. Vision and faith will feed and support one another. They are habits, and because the sign involved is Pisces, once you get them going they will be enmeshed deeply in who you are. And while challenging, they are such dependable techniques that you will want to use them. We tend to be so dependent on our mental faculties that they take over our minds. Like a computer, your mind makes an excellent slave and a terrible master. Allow your higher power to take over. Said another way, your quest is to go from belief to faith. To do this, you will need to distinguish the two.

All of life consists of relationships, and looked at one way, those relationships consist of agreements. Since this is true on one level, let’s start there. You tend to be idealistic about those agreements, and Chiron transiting into Pisces is calling on you to be practical, grounded and focused. This is a time to create written contracts where verbal ones existed in the past. It’s a time to see if the goals of longstanding partnerships add up to the results you want at this time in your life, and notice whether they are pointing you toward your objectives for the next phase of your life. Do they honor the person you are becoming, as well as the person you are now? Deeper down, closer to the truth of the matter, is that relationships are based on a shared reality that is much softer and more intuitive than an agreement. They thrive on a shared vision. Indeed, our world’s insistence on agreements is a substitute for precisely this intuitive and visionary factor: a mutual sense of perspective; a common spiritual orientation; the subtle understanding that relationships are for mutual benefit. Chiron in Pisces is going to work like a clarifying filter on both dimensions: of contracts and of your shared vision, guiding you toward that place where the two become one thing, which is a dimension beyond either. Chiron will be keeping your sex life pretty hot as well.

You tend to be discriminating — in fact, to a fault. You hold both yourself and the world to high standards, sometimes ones that are impossible to attain. This seems to be the direct result of past disappointments in relationships, events that have gradually cultivated in you a subtle lack of trust of others that you seem to spend a lot of time and energy fighting with. It’s now time to heal that particular issue, and in the process, renew your faith in relationships and in yourself. Here is a question: Was your trust hurt because your expectations were unrelated to the person you were actually dealing with? It’s time to size up how you look at others, and why. Chiron in your 7th solar house is about noticing where you were perceiving people in unrealistic ways, as well as where you lost contact with a common language. Part of regaining that is about learning how to listen in new ways. Indeed, learning a language, hearing comes before speaking. Can you think of important events in your life where you decided it was time to shut your ears and stop paying attention to what others were saying? Imagine Chiron as one of those old-fashioned hearing aid funnels that gathers sound and presents it to you in a focused way. The key to translating is to seek understanding, rather than judgment. Once you know what someone is getting at, you will know what to do with the information.

Many times in life you were certain your efforts were going nowhere or adding up to less than the energy you put out. Still, one thing you can be grateful for is your willingness to be helpful. It’s not that you’re ‘nice’ (you probably are) but rather that your mind is grounded in knowing that part of why we’re alive is to be supportive of our environment. Within our society there’s no commonly accepted concept of whole or holistic: ‘home’ has nothing to do with ‘work’; creativity and earning money are divided from one another; friendships and relationships are put into different categories, and so on. Then we’re conditioned to see health and wellbeing as separate from these other factors of life. Chiron in Pisces, your 6th solar house, is about taking a whole-systems approach to your existence. Now is the moment of making sure that all the parts of your life work together and are designed to support one another. Look for the common ground that everything in your world shares (which is you). Observing how you feel, seeing where your energy goes, considering your purpose for doing anything — all of these will offer clues to how to integrate that which seems to be separate, out of place or challenging. Remember, what you are shifting awareness of is not ‘your life’ but rather yourself. The deepest gift you receive will be confidence in your purpose here.

You have a powerful fantasy life. Oh my goddess: you do know how to let your imagination run free. You take many risks there that [you think] you would never take in real life. This involves the Pisces angle of your chart, and Chiron has now arrived there, representing a cosmic-scale craving to turn fantasy into experience. It could be any kind of fantasy you like, from the art you want to make to the love you want to make to some risk you want to indulge, but remember — we’re talking Pisces styled. Often, fantasy itself is satisfying and serves a nourishing purpose. Chiron has a different objective, which is some form of actuality and fully incarnated experience. I recognize we live in a time when the difference between ‘real life’ and ‘the imagination’ is being played down or intentionally blurred. I also recognize that experience is supposedly scary: it challenges our current, often delicate state of affairs. There is the element of potential failure involved. Other forms of risk show up when you leave the confines of your inner mind. I suggest you consider the extent to which dwelling on your imagination is an indulgence for your conservative side. Conversely, I propose that your desire for experience is about exploring the side of your nature that wants nothing more than liberation. One of the first questions that comes up under this transit is, how attached to your limitations are you?

Those born under your sign tend to be some of the boldest in the neighborhood, but then you pay for it with a deep, abiding insecurity. Which one is really you? Well, the two spheres of consciousness co-create one another. Anyone with a shred of spiritual awareness, and you definitely qualify, has noticed a few times that the human ego is extremely frail and terrified of its own potential lack of existence. There are those times when you recognize that what we call life is about as solid as taking a ride on a soap bubble that can burst at any moment. And what is beyond that? What is the existence beyond the ride on the bubble? You’re vividly aware of this dimension as well, and it’s where some of your most useful information comes from — you know, the stuff that “you don’t know how you know it, but you do.” Chiron in Pisces is here to help you tap into the mystery of your inner core. It’s here to remind you of what is beyond the transience of experience. Most significantly, Chiron will remind you that the basis of your reality is not your ego structure and all the ways you try to define yourself, but rather your growing awareness of your soul. I don’t mean soul in the mystical sense, but rather the most pragmatic: your inner being and the actual foundation on which your existence is built.

Going back at least a year, you’ve been under such pressure to change that it’s amazing you’ve had time for anything else. This pressure has been coming from so many different directions that it’s been difficult to keep your mental focus. But let’s turn the clock back beyond the past year — my question is, how many of your ideas have you acted on? They come flying in; you’re gifted with insight and foresight: but what about some measure of consistent action developing them? Chiron in Pisces will have some interesting, even intense, mental effects, the first of which we could describe as a crisis of focus. You may be overwhelmed with the need to sort yourself out; to get your priorities in order; to understand the rational basis for your intuition. At other times you will be confronted by how little you know, which is a healthy response to existence. Sometimes you feel like your entire thought process is a dream. Imagine that you’re going from a dream to a lucid dream: one where you can consciously choose what you experience. Think of this as being given a power tool, one that is potentially dangerous because it bestows your mind with certain properties of clarity that you’re unaccustomed to. This might arrive with the sense of waking up to how out of it you were. Remember to wake up now, rather than worrying about what you failed to notice in the past.

Financial independence is one of those themes that never seems to go away, and which affects everything in your world. Yet the notions of ‘financial’ and ‘independence’ are outer forms of a deeper question, which concerns how you feel about yourself. If you’re in feel-good mode, nothing can shake your confidence; you tap into an infinite depth of love. If your inner climate changes, you can be wracked with doubts about your purpose, your worthiness, and whether you have enough energy (or money) to accomplish what is most important to you. One of the first tasks of Chiron in Pisces is to tune you into the dualism involved: to get the two sides of your mind in communication with one another. The ‘two ways you feel about yourself’ tend to be mutually exclusive and, in a sense, unrelated. They seem to have so little in common, you might go mad from cognitive dissonance if you tried to think of them at the same time. Yet they have something crucial in common, which is that they’re elements of your potential. There is wisdom in your confidence, and another kind of wisdom in your insecurity. The two add up to something beyond the sum of the parts, which is an understanding of the source of your power; which is your spiritual grounding; which is your self-esteem; which relates directly to money. You don’t need to integrate them — only to notice that they’re attributes of the same thing.

Few concepts in astrology evoke the seeming paradox of existence like Pisces, and one of them is Chiron. Both ask the deepest questions, such as those concerning the relationship between soul and body, or between a person and existence. These are topics of rampant speculation, which usually gets categorized as ‘spirituality’. Yet if we go beyond theory, and beyond the religious concepts designed to abuse human doubt, we come to the fact of life as a journey of experience. And that, in a phrase, is the nature of Chiron’s arrival in your birth sign. This holds true for your relationships, your creative process, your experience of growth, and what you want to do every day. What they all have in common is experience, and as Chiron makes its way through your sign — first for a few months through late July, then for eight years starting in 2011 — I suggest you use the concept of experience to trump your doubts and your misgivings. Experience is the most fundamental bottom line of existence, which places you on equal footing with everyone around you, and at the center of your life. Among the many things we can say about Chiron transiting one’s own birth sign, particularly the mysterious last sign, is that you have some strong encouragement to choose based on who and what you want to experience. If your response is: “Really? Is that okay?” then you can see precisely why it’s true.
