Hiking in the Fontainebleau forest, about an hour outside of Paris, the sound of chainsaws in the distance, we were not expecting to see the rich red-orange life inside of a beautiful adult tree, which seems destined to be sold as firewood.

At the northern edge of Paris, near the flea markets of the Porte St. Ouen, there is a "green corridor" down along the old train tracks called Les Jardins du Ruisseau. At one end of this community garden, there's an apiary, and at the other a chicken coop. An association, 500 strong, of Friends of the Gardens had existed since 2004, regularly hosting events and trading plants.

The Bien Bohemio tango club in Buenos Aires. Each week people come to sing classic tango songs. Like karaoke but with live music behind you. Teachers, doctors, shop keepers, aunts, grandmothers, fathers. There are many regulars, who step onto a small stage every week to sing tragic tales. Even if you don't speak Spanish, you understand the agony and ecstasy on their faces. And it seems each person steps onto the stage with a primal need, and steps off transformed. This woman is such a regular, she walks down among the tables to tell her story.
