Mercury in its current state describes some kind of deep review, reassessment or reinvestigation — with some potential topics being how your thoughts and less-expressed emotions influence each other, matters of sex and surrender, jealousy and possessiveness, or other deep, taboo and potentially transformative topics. Vesta currently appears to describe the ways you do or do not keep matters of your body, senses, health, material resources, sexuality and comfort central in your life.

With these two opposing each other, notice whether you’re in some kind of dialogue about which of these things you devote yourself (and resources) to; what gets sacrificed; and what you’ve been holding onto too tightly to count as either. You know everything you need to know, and you very likely know what you want to do. Only you can grant yourself the freedom of choice. Nobody will hand it to you; nobody can give you permission to live your life, except yourself. Ask yourself what you actually owe people; think this through a few times, and if necessary, pay up. It’s essential to remember that you are not responsible for the burdens or the karma of others — unless you choose to be. And in that choice you would need to be guided by a really good reason. It’s more than enough that you are wholly responsible for your own life. Most people never even get to that point of maturity. You have arrived.

So we have the planet of anger (among other things) in the sign of seeking balance, facing off against the planet of discord in the sign of individual identity. This could describe a situation where one person is acting out attention-seeking behaviors, leaving the other person to decide how to respond.

The main options are to stay disengaged and diplomatic or to get triggered and react in kind. The woman has held down an enormous amount of energy and feels like she’s going to explode, melt down or go mad from lack of attention. How are you doing with things like errands and purchases, following through on certain trains of thought, or connecting with people via clear, straightforward communication? Mercury’s continuing retrograde through Scorpio could be slowing things down — for example, by requiring more than one attempt to get something simple accomplished. Can you see what caused you to stumble or detour the first time around, and learn from that experience?

Think of Mercury retrograde in Scorpio as being like scuba diving deep under the surface of the sea. It’s harder to see far ahead; there’s an extra sense of pressure; actions tend to result in exaggerated reactions, so it helps to go slowly and stay relaxed; communication is trickier and the stakes are higher, so it’s essential to be very clear and direct with your buddies. And when something goes wrong, the simple ability to stop, breathe, and think can be an actual lifesaver. Most dry land hiccups associated with Mercury retrograde are not life-and-death situations, but the same principles definitely apply.

In less soggy news, the asteroid Pallas enters Sagittarius this morning. This shifts its tone from one of an ‘asexual’ approach to sexual politics to something more like big-picture planning, the long-game (spiritually as well as politically), and perhaps a strangely rational form of optimism. You will need to watch your tendency toward what some call passive aggression during the next few weeks. There’s nothing passive about aggression in any form, but it can wear many disguises, and have many motives. One motive would be insecurity. The planets this month are a setup for attempting to convert an extra-fiery temperament mixed with lack of confidence into conflict, which would be a purely self-destructive combination. The way to recast this into a creative equation is to be in contact with your desires, also with your sense of entitlement. They are two different things, though typically experienced as one. The first thing to do is sort them out. It’s absolutely vital that you be in touch with your desires; that you discover what you want. And it’s equally vital that you experience desire itself as a source of pleasure, without resorting to a sense of entitlement. Of its own, wanting is healthy — especially if you can find in your desire the authentic need to share and nourish others. Yet when you retreat into obsession with having, with achieving or with conquering, or with a drive for getting attention at any cost, that can turn negative fairly quickly. Therefore I would say, give what you want to receive. Get in contact with your deepest desires, and express them in a way that is generous and loving. Be especially kind to women; that means listening, in the first instance, and offering your support in gentle ways, with no strings attached.

Although Mars won’t complete its opposition to Eris in Aries until Saturday, it’s in the zone now. Mars represents a number of things: motivation, sex drive, physical energy, violence, and anger, to name some primary themes. Opposite Eris, the goddess of discord, anger might be the thing to keep tabs on for the next couple days. Mars in Libra can alternate between ‘mild-mannered’ and ‘hellfire’ in its responses to others.

The question for you is: if you encounter someone who seems to be crazy-making for its own sake (or for internal, attention-seeking reasons you don’t quite understand), or is clearly manipulative, or is sabotaging their own best interests, how will you respond? You have a choice. You can fly off the handle, but that will likely just feed whatever inner monologue of persecution the other person is running. It also takes you out of your power.

Or, you can choose to stand your ground in as detached, magnanimous, diplomatic and optimistic manner as possible. Fires burn themselves out quicker if you don’t fuel them. Once the fury has subsided, then there might be space for negotiation.
