In tonight’s edition, we have something extra fun — an interview with Andrew McLuhan, musician, scholar and grandson of Marshall McLuhan. That name lacks the controversy and impact that it once had. But his ideas are more relevant, and more obvious, than ever.

Marshall McLuhan, circa unknown.

In tonight’s non astrological edition (here is your astrology), we have something extra fun — an interview with Andrew McLuhan, musician, scholar and grandson of Marshall McLuhan. I bet this is at least 10 baud!

It was Marshall who most accurately envisioned the world we live in today — the global village, the return to tribalism and people becoming the content of media rather than merely its consumers. The image at left is a detail from a Global Village modem, which company took its name from one of Marshall McLuhan’s observations.

In other words, way back in 1964 he looked out at the world and saw what could become Facebook. In the process he commenced the whole field of media studies. By the way, from my discussions with Andrew, this would include astrology the way we do it at Planet Waves, which involves a careful study of the otherwise invisible environment.

We plan to return to that subject soon. I mention two videos in the program — The Ballad of Marshall McLuhan, featuring Alpha-Bits, and the full scene from Annie Hall, where Marshall makes a cameo — which I begin with at the very top of the program.

Great interview, Eric. I really enjoyed hearing/learning Andrew’s perspective.

As someone who isn’t exactly Facebook or Tv friendly — I have this kind of strange, complicated (work) relationship with ‘media’ that I don’t feel fully comfortable with as part of my life… but I’m working on it.

What a great interview. You and Andrew sound like twins, almost. Thanks for sharing more of your background and the influence of your dad and early life on your work. Marshall McLuhan is not someone I’m familiar with but I can see his influence as well. Such fascinating ideas that you introduced in the show regarding the medium is the massage. I know you’ve talked a lot about media and advertising over the years and your relationship to it but this was taking it to another level. I plan to read up on him.

Just wanted to let you know that unfortunately I am no longer able to be a subscriber. During the grand cross back in the spring, my life was destroyed, as it passed over my Aries ascendant. I lost everything, had an emotional breakdown and rescued by my brother and taken to Florida where I am resting while I wait out the rest of this upheaval. I really value all that you have to offer here and so happy that I can at least listen to these podcasts. One day I hope to be working again and able to afford another subscription. Keep up the great work. Patricia
